David Attenborough was ‘inspiration’ for new show
David Attenborough was ‘inspiration’ for new show
The Prince of Wales has described Sir David Attenborough as a “big inspiration” to him growing up, and the motivation behind his new wildlife documentary highlighting the work of rangers.
In an unexpected appearance at a screening earlier this week, Prince William credited the veteran nature presenter with “being able to present wonderful parts of the world to many of us most of us will never get a chance to visit”.
He said he hoped his new six-part series, called Guardians, “does the same kind of thing”.
The prince and Sir David share a passion for conserving the natural world, and have supported each other’s projects in the field.
The heir to the throne has attended screenings of the broadcaster’s documentaries privately, while Sir David has been a champion of Prince William’s environmentally focused Earthshot Prize since its inception.
Now taking a lead from the 99-year-old host of Ocean and Planet Earth, the prince said his new series “reminds people that there are still wonderful parts of the world and there is still hope, and there’s still amazing work being done”.
He surprised those attending the screening of the series when he walked into a central London hotel and sat with journalists to watch the first three episodes.
Guardians will focus on how the work of rangers – who protect endangered animals – has become significantly more risky. Around 1,400 rangers have died in the past decade.
“This is now one of the most dangerous jobs on the planet,” the prince told reporters.
“It shouldn’t be. Protecting the natural world shouldn’t be that dangerous.
“Being a soldier, a police officer, the emergency services – these jobs are dangerous, people put their lives on the line.
“I don’t think people realise it’s the same for these guys and girls around the world.”
He attributed the increased threat to “community conflicts or civil wars, or ******** fishing, or poaching – whatever it might be is just spreading further and further across the globe”.
A friend said the prince turned up to emphasise the importance of the series to him on a personal level.
“The project was driven by him,” the friend told the BBC. “He wanted to show the incredible work rangers do for people around the world.”
Each episode will feature an on-screen introduction by Prince William, who also appears in a trailer for the project.
The prince also spoke about the challenge of recruiting the next generation of rangers.
He said: “They ask, why would I do that? Why would I go and risk my life to do that? No one seems to notice and no one seems to care. I’m not necessarily paid enough, I’m not valued enough by society.”
Prince William stressed that rangers “do so much more than just protecting wildlife”.
“It’s about the community initiatives they do, it’s the education, it’s the teaching, the scientific research,” he said.
“And if we are to reach our goals, and we do generally as a world care about the natural environment, then we need more of these guys and girls.”
Rangers are tasked with overseeing natural areas and the wildlife within them, but increasingly have to fend off poachers, who seek to traffic or kill animals – such as elephants, tigers and rhinos – that have body parts prized by some.
Poachers can be armed and encounters with rangers can prove fatal. In the year to May 2024, 38 out of 140 deaths were homicides, according to the International Ranger Federation (IRF).
In November, the prince announced a new life insurance scheme to cover 10,000 rangers who safeguard Africa’s wildlife.
The screening was also attended by Rohit Singh, vice-president of the IRF, who described rangers as “essential planetary health workers” and echoed the Prince’s concerns.
He said: “One statistic that always comes to my mind is that 82% of rangers say they don’t want their kids to become rangers – so if we don’t change this, how are we going to get more rangers?
“There are more hairdressers in the *** than there are rangers in the world’s protected areas.”
The first episode of the series, launched by the Royal Foundation’s United for Wildlife and co-produced by Zandland, is available from Friday on BBC Earth’s YouTube and social channels, with a new episode released every Friday.

Why the Army feels safe resuming use of horse-drawn ******** carriages at Arlington National Cemetery
Why the Army feels safe resuming use of horse-drawn ******** carriages at Arlington National Cemetery
Arlington, Virginia — Soldiers of the U.S. Army’s Old Guard are taking on intensive drills as they prepare to resume next month their sacred and solemn duty of using horse-drawn caissons, or carriages, for servicemembers being laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
These horse-drawn funerals were suspended by the Army in May 2023 following the deaths of two of the horses within a 96-hour ******* back in February 2022, prompting an Army investigation.
As CBS News previously reported, other horses pulling the caissons were also suffering painful muscle and tendon injuries. At the time, the Army said that 27 Arlington horses were sent to multiple rehabilitation facilities, and the horses were replaced with hearses.
The horses were performing up to eight funerals a day, in all weather, and pulling wagons that weighed more than a ton.
Most of those horses are retired now, replaced by dozens of new ones.
But Army commanders knew they needed professional help to bring the caissons back. So, they called in equestrian David O’Connor, an Olympic gold medalist with the U.S. Equestrian Federation.
“The commanding general gets up there and he goes, ‘OK, I would like for all of you guys to realize that we do not know what we’re talking about,'” O’Connor recounted to CBS News. “I thought it was the greatest opening line I’ve ever heard. That humility was surprising to me: ‘We’re in serious trouble. We need to really look at this whole thing.'”
According to Lt. Col. Jason Crawford, a veterinarian and the new commander of the Caisson Detachment, much of the issue centered around education.
“Once we brought the right experts in, I think everyone then starts having the aha moment,” Crawford said. “Like, we didn’t know the horses were kind of working too much.”
Starting in June, two squads of 11 horses will perform two services a day for a total of about 10 funerals per week. Before the pause, some of the horses were working 45 days straight when they were supposed to get two weeks rest after 14 days of work.
And it isn’t just the ******** of the animals that is a focus, but the equipment. The old caisson weighed about 2,600 pounds. The new one is more than 1,000 pounds lighter.
There has also been extensive training for unit personnel. Staff Sgt. Isaac Melton, a squad leader, told CBS News he didn’t grow up riding horses, and says the first time he even came in contact with one was when he began training 15 months ago. He says that training has averaged about “eight to 10 hours a day.”
Melton says “perfection” will be going through his mind on day one of the program’s return.
Sgt. Daimien Copeland was part of the program before it was suspended.
“Something inside your chest, let’s you just feel — you’re proud, you’re nervous, you’re excited,” Copeland said of his feelings of resuming horse-drawn caissons. “You know, you’re honored to be able to be the one that’s saying, ‘I’m helping bring this back to the cemetery to those service members and their families.'”

Jamie Dimon Says He Never Bought Into American Exceptionalism. He Blames Regulation And ‘Stupid Bureaucracy’ For Slowing The Country Down
Jamie Dimon Says He Never Bought Into American Exceptionalism. He Blames Regulation And ‘Stupid Bureaucracy’ For Slowing The Country Down
Jamie Dimon says the U.S. can’t take its status as the world’s top economic power for granted anymore.
In a recent interview with Bloomberg Television, the JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM) CEO was asked whether he worries about U.S. supremacy and exceptionalism. He answered, perhaps surprisingly, that he never quite believed in American exceptionalism and warned that regulation and what he called “stupid bureaucracy” are holding the country back.
“We’ve slowed ourselves down with regulation, stupid bureaucracy,” Dimon said. “We haven’t done budgets in years. So, no, we shouldn’t assume it’s forever.”
Don’t Miss:
He pointed to a long list of issues that are weighing on the economy: inflation, deficits, rising interest rates, and ongoing global conflicts.
“There’s a lot of uncertainty out there that you can’t discount,” he said, mentioning the war in Ukraine, terrorism, instability in the Middle East and U.S. deficits. He also highlighted the risks created by tariffs, saying that although the U.S. has backed off some of its earlier moves, even the current level of trade tension is causing companies to hesitate.
“Even at this level, you see people holding back on investment and thinking through what they want to do,” Dimon said.
On the possibility of a U.S. recession, Dimon didn’t give a firm prediction. Instead, he deferred to economists and put the chances at “about 50%.” Interestingly, JPMorgan’s analysts raised their recession probability to 60% in April, up from 40% in March.
He added, “All these things are probably inflationary… and slowing down the economy.”
Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — this is your last chance to become an investor for $0.80 per share.
Still, despite the challenges, Dimon said America remains the top choice for investment: “If you would take all of your money and put it in one country, it would still be America.”
However, he cautioned that this dominance isn’t guaranteed. “You do not have a divine right to success,” he said. “If we don’t do everything right, we can lose that.”
Dimon also expressed admiration for some foreign leaders who he believes are taking a more business-friendly approach. He praised French President Emmanuel Macron, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and ******* Chancellor Friedrich Merz for their pro-business attitudes. “I think Macron is one of the best political leaders on the planet today.”

Ambassador to Ukraine who resigned under Trump administration may run for Congress in Michigan
Ambassador to Ukraine who resigned under Trump administration may run for Congress in Michigan
Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink is considering a run for Congress in her home state of Michigan, CBS News has learned.
Brink, who served for 28 years as a diplomat, is mulling a bid in Michigan’s 7th congressional district, which is currently represented by Republican Tom Barrett. The Lansing-area district is rated by the Cook Political Report as a tossup, and was represented by Democrat Elissa Slotkin until earlier this year, when she moved to the Senate.
In a statement first given to the Detroit News, Brink said, “I’ve dedicated my life to public service — working under five Presidents, both Democratic and Republican, and am exploring my options and the best way to continue to serve my country and my great home state of Michigan.”
Brink resigned her post as envoy to Ukraine in April. In an op-ed last week in the Detroit Free Press, she said policy differences with the Trump administration prompted her to step down. President Trump has pressed Ukraine and Russia to strike a peace deal, sometimes lashing out at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the process.
On CBS News’ “Face the Nation” Sunday, she told moderator Margaret Brennan, “I resigned from Ukraine and also from the Foreign Service, because the policy since the beginning of the administration was to put pressure on the victim Ukraine, rather than on the aggressor, Russia. I fully agree that the war needs to end, but I believe that peace at any price is not peace at all. It’s appeasement and as we know from history, appeasement only leads to more war.
A career diplomat, Brink was confirmed by the Senate as ambassador to Kyiv shortly after Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022, and stayed on during the early months of the Trump administration.
In April, CBS reported that Brink intended to resign her post as ambassador due to an unusual mix of personal and policy concerns, including USAID layoffs. Brink had been serving in a war zone far from her family since Kyiv is designated as an unaccompanied post, where officers serve without bringing their families with them.

NSW flood disaster: Tragic circumstances surrounding deaths of flood victims revealed
NSW flood disaster: Tragic circumstances surrounding deaths of flood victims revealed
The death toll from the floods ravaging NSW has risen to four, with three of those people found dead trapped in their cars.
Fears are also held for a fifth person who is still missing.
The family of the first victim has paid tribute after his selfless act as flood waters rose, while police have revealed the tragic circumstances surrounding the deaths of the other three people, who are yet to be identified.

Farmer David Knowles, 63, was the first confirmed victim of the floods after his property was inundated by the floods in the state’s Mid North Coast.
Mr Knowles had heroically stayed behind at his property near Taree to protect his cattle as floodwaters rose.
His daughter Stacey Hurrell told the Daily Mail that her father’s best friend, Wayne Drury, had led a team of rescuers to the family property.
But instead of taking a spot in the limited number of lifeboats, Mr Knowles asked rescuers to find and rescue his family instead.
“He was a man with the biggest heart,” she said.
“He’d give you his last dollars.”

Authorities were called to the property at North Moto Road, Moto, about 3pm on Wednesday following reports of a body being found.
His body was later found on the verandah. Authorities believe existing medical conditions may have contributed to his death.
Ms Hurrell and his other daughter Roxy have paid tribute to their father, writing: “Dad passed as a hero yesterday, sending help away to save others.”
“He didn’t want to leave his farm on a good day.
“We all couldn’t be prouder of you, Dad.
“We love you.”
Rosewood
The body of a 34-year-old man was recovered from flood waters on the Mid North Coast on Thursday morning.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of the Oxley Highway and Huntingdon Road near Rosewood, about 4km west of Wauchope, about 8.50pm on Wednesday following reports a man had become stuck in floodwater while driving but officers were unable to locate him or the vehicle.
His body was found at 8am the next morning.
While the body is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be that of the missing man.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death continue and a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
Brooklana
A woman in her 60s was found dead in her vehicle after getting into trouble while attempting to drive from Sydney to Coffs Harbor.
Traffic police stopped the woman, who was in a Holden 4WD, west of Dorrigo about 7pm on Wednesday.
The officer, who was driving a BMW sedan, and the woman then left, driving along Coramba Road towards Coffs Harbour before stopping at Wild Cattle Creek Bridge when they encountered water over the roadway.
The officer checked the water level, which was ankle deep, and spoke to the woman, advising her he would turn around.
The officer advised her to be careful and gave the woman his phone number before she continued driving towards Coffs Harbour.
But the woman phoned the officer 30 minutes later, saying she was in trouble near Morora Road, Brooklana, about 17km away.
Authorities searched for the woman but could not find her or the vehicle. She was found dead inside the 4WD at 8am on Thursday.

A man believed to be in his 70s is the fourth confirmed victim of the flood disaster. His body was found trapped inside a car in Nana Glen, 30km north west of Coffs Harbour on Friday morning.
Police say a passing motorist spotted the vehicle which had run off Orara Way about 4.30am.
“Officers from Coffs-Clarence Police Area Command and SES members attended the scene and found the body of a man inside. He appeared to be the only occupant,” a police statement read.Assistant Commissioner Dave Waddell appeared on 2GB on Friday morning to confirm the grim news.“It appears the man has run off the road in what locals are saying is the worst flooding ever in the region,” he said.

Report: Elden Ring Movie Officially In The Works At A24, Alex Garland Set To Direct
Report: Elden Ring Movie Officially In The Works At A24, Alex Garland Set To Direct
After months of speculation, A24 has reportedly confirmed that a live-action Elden Ring movie is in the works. The project is said to be helmed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation, Civil War), who is set to both write and direct the upcoming film.
Though several outlets have speculated on the film’s existence the past few months, Deadline reported it officially confirmed earlier today. In addition to Garland, a few other names have been attached to the film. Most notably is George R. R. Martin, who famously collaborated with Elden Ring studio From Software to help write the game’s backstory. Meanwhile, Peter Rice, and DNA’s Andrew MacDonald and Allon Reich, are all set to produce.
The news comes shortly after the release of Garland’s latest film, Warfare, which was also made in partnership with A24 and has currently grossed over $32 million since releasing last month. It also comes just ahead of the release of Elden Ring: Nightreign, an Elden Ring spin-off game that focuses on cooperative, PvE gameplay and it set to release on May 30.

Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2025: Top picks for Liverpool
Radio 1’s Big Weekend 2025: Top picks for Liverpool
Calum Leslie
Newsreader, BBC Newsbeat
BBC
Sam Fender is among the main highlights
Radio 1’s Big Weekend is about to get going in Sefton Park, Liverpool.
Each year the station rounds up some of the hottest artists in the world and gets them together for three days of music in a *** city.
But with about 100 acts across four stages, there’s a lot to take in.
So BBC Newsbeat spoke to DJs Greg James, Sian Eleri and Jack Saunders to get their top tips on what to watch out for.
Greg James tips Sam Fender for a Big Weekend highlight
Radio 1 Breakfast host Greg James says Sam Fender’s main stage headline slot on Saturday will be “incredibly significant”.
“He’s an artist that Radio 1 has supported from day one,” says Greg.
“We all knew that something special could happen with him, and it has.”
Official *** Chart Show host Jack says the weekend is a chance for him to watch artists he’s interviewed performing.
“Joy Crookes is an artist who I’ve never seen live before who I love to hang out with on the radio,” he says.
“She’s so much fun. Her music is so soulful, so euphoric and she is just a great time and I think her set’s going to be a great time.”
Getty Images
Big Weekend takes place in a different *** city each year – in 2024 it was Luton’s turn
Future Artists host Sian says dance act Barry Can’t Swim is her big tip.
The Scottish DJ, real name Joshua Spence Mainnie, was nominated for last year’s Mercury Music Prize and a host of other awards for his debut, When Do We Land?.
“I’ve been lucky enough to see him live a couple of times now and every single time he delivers,” she says.
“It’s the best gig of your life. It’s colourful. It’s vibrant. The vibes are there,” says Sian, who’s also hoping to hear “secret unreleased bits” from Barry’s upcoming album.
Under the radarGetty Images
Sian Eleri says up-and-coming singer Sienna Spiro is one to watch
“The whole point of Big Weekend is that we have big headliners,” says Greg.
“But we also have the New Music Stage and then we have the Introducing stage, which finds the next Sam Fender.
“I think that Big Weekend tends to do that.
“We put artists on the radio and back them from the early days… you can chart their progress.”
Greg says it’s well worth paying attention to lesser-known artists before they become the next big thing.
And one of those Sian is backing is “phenomenal” singer-songwriter Sienna Spiro, who plays the BBC Introducing stage on Saturday.
“She’s one of those vocalists who stops you in your tracks,” says Sian.
“Imagine if I’d discovered Adele, for example, all those years ago, I would feel the same way as I do about Sienna Spiro.
“She is definitely one of those artists who’s going to skyrocket, so be an early fan now.”
Jack’s shout is ex-Little Mix member *****, who’s topping the New Music stage bill on Sunday.
“She’s obviously been at the top of many bills with Little Mix, but in her own right as a solo artist is a completely different proposition,” says Jack.
“We have only seen her do it at the Brit Awards so far, so Big Weekend will be a big moment for her.”
Magic moments
Like any festival, Big Weekend is all about those moments that you’ll remember for years to come.
Greg recalls Charli XCX’s performance last year, in Luton, on the New Music Stage, “just before Brat summer took hold of the world”.
“It felt like something was really bubbling under the surface with her,” he says.
“And we got it just before it went mad.”
Sian’s memory is a little more personal.
“My first Big Weekend, 2010, in Bangor, when I went as a punter,” she says.
“I was a huge Vampire Weekend fan at the time… I was front and centre, leaning up against the barriers, having the time of my life.
“I’ve still got rubbish pictures on a digital camera that I took with me at the time.
“I’ll never forget that moment,” she says. “I was losing my mind.”
Make the most of the festivalGetty Images
If you’re actually heading down to Sefton Park, the weather forecast is looking… mixed.
Saturday, in particular, is threatening to be soggy, with showers predicted for most of the day.
But Sian’s staying optimistic.
“I don’t want to jinx it, but it has been sunny every single year,” she says.
“So bring sun cream, bring hats.”
Some wellies might be a good shout, too.
“Look after yourself. Keep an eye on each other. Get some water going. Just be sensible and have a good time,” says Sian.
If you’re looking to make the most of the music, the Radio 1 crew have some tips.
“Look at the clash finder,” says Jack, referring to the tool that tells you whether two artists you want to see are playing at the same time.
“Work out which artists you want to see the most, and which you would be OK with missing,” he says.
“And don’t leave it until you get to the festival.”
Greg says you shouldn’t be too strict with your schedule, though.
“Go and see some stuff you’ve never heard of because those people will become the next big things,” he says.
“And then you can go: ‘Yeah, but I saw them five years ago in Sefton Park on a tiny stage’.
“So go and be there, the handful of people in the crowd for a new band or a new artist. That’s quite a cool thing.”
“But don’t overplan. Have a couple of headliners to go to. But then just get lost.”
Listen to Newsbeat live at 12:45 and 17:45 weekdays – or listen back here.

Cathie Wood Just Bought a New Stake in Taiwan Semiconductor Stock
Cathie Wood Just Bought a New Stake in Taiwan Semiconductor Stock
When investors look around for a new idea to trade or invest in, there are often lean seasons where nothing seems to click or make sense, and no opportunities are to be found, while other seasons’ ideas just seem to come from everywhere at once.
In today’s market, it’s difficult to identify a good value opportunity considering that the broader index is trading near its all-time highs now.
However, this is where keeping track of what the so-called “smart money” is buying or selling can be useful. Seeing what the ******* players in the market are doing can spark new ideas for investors to consider if they can successfully reverse-engineer the thinking or the thesis behind these moves by institutional investors.
This means making it part of their portfolio and understanding what might drive performance and risk.
By insourcing an idea into an individual process, investors can better understand what may drive profits and what may bring on losses instead of relying on someone else’s homework.
Today’s homework can be taken from Cathie Wood, as she recently decided to buy up a significant stake in shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:), and there must be a good reason for that.
Critical Role in the Chip Supply Chain Justifies Cathie Wood’s Strategic Bet
Before investors understand why Cathie Wood’s fund decided to buy up a position in Taiwan Semiconductor, they need to understand the company’s role in today’s market developments. With the recent volatility around the technology sector caused by President Trump’s trade tariffs, a few things must be considered.
Some businesses have delayed new orders for equipment and products coming out of China, which will likely slow down the demand for chips and semiconductors, essential in a large share of imports today.
However, an agreement has been reached between the United States and China, pushing for a 90-day pause on tariffs centered on clearing the way for semiconductors as a priority.
This might get things moving in the right direction for a major company like Taiwan Semiconductor, relieving some of the uncertainty and pressures off future financials. However, another factor to consider here is that this company is essential in most (if not all) of the chip supply chain.
Most investors would focus on a name like NVIDIA (NASDAQ:) as one of the most popular ones in this group, given that it has attracted the most price action over the recent months and years. However, some would fail to realize that there wouldn’t be any NVIDIA without the technology and equipment that Taiwan Semiconductor makes.
That’s not only true for NVIDIA; plenty of other names in the consumer electronics space indirectly rely on Taiwan Semiconductor in this manner.
That being said, Cathie Wood and her team may have considered this positioning when opening their new position.
Institutional Confidence, Short Seller Retreat Fuel Bullish Outlook for Taiwan Semiconductor
As tariff uncertainty will likely subside in the coming months and quarters, investors can safely assume that Taiwan Semiconductor will start to see the same level of new orders and bookings as it typically does under a typical environment.
Seeing the stock trade at 85% of its 52-week high, and delivering a monthly rally of up to 29.6%, the consensus might be pricing in a few better quarters down the road, justifying the decision to buy in recent days, but the optimism seems to run a bit deeper than that.
Short sellers now realize that Taiwan Semiconductor’s risk-to-reward ratio looks a bit too focused on the upside, especially with room to flirt again with new 52-week highs. For this reason, and given the industry’s fundamental setup today, investors can see that up to 15.5% of the company’s short interest declined over the past month alone.
Witnessing the bears leave in a sign of capitulation, today’s buyers of Taiwan Semiconductor stock might still see a more straightforward path ahead for higher prices. When scanning for more recent institutional buying, investors can start to conclude that it undeniably helps a bull case in the stock.
As of May 2025, those from AllianceBernstein (NYSE:) also built up a stake worth up to $1.5 billion after a recent boost of 31.5%, signaling further institutional confidence that runs deeper than just Cathie Wood’s fund. This is another big pillar of strength for new investors still on the fence to consider.

China eyes international help to resolve U.S. trade war
China says trade talks with the U.S. are important amid a 90-day truce that lowered tariffs between the two countries, but other nations need to get involved to reach a full solution. Andrew Polk, partner at Beijing-based research firm Trivium China, joins “America Decides” with analysis.

Stock futures were little changed on Thursday night, as investors continue to evaluate the effect of higher U.S. Treasury yields on the economy.
Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 14 points, or 0.03%. Nasdaq 100 futures were marginally lower, while S&P 500 futures ticked up 0.03%.
In regular trading, the S&P 500 closed just below the flatline, as did the 30-stock Dow. Both posted their third consecutive losing day. The Nasdaq Composite was the outlier, rising about 0.3%.
Early Thursday, members of the House of Representatives cleared President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax bill. It now goes to the Senate. Worries about the cost of the measure – and its impact on the nation’s debt and deficit – sent long-term Treasury yields higher.
The 30-year Treasury bond yield touched a high of 5.161%, its highest level since October 2023. The rate on the 10-year Treasury note at one point breached 4.6%. Rates on both Treasurys ended the session off their highs.
“Even if the inability to reduce the deficit in the U.S. doesn’t lead to default, a large deficit still implies greater bond supply, and perhaps eventual inflation as the debt is monetized to avoid default,” said Thierry Wizman, global rates and currencies strategist at Macquarie. “Either way, it makes nominal fixed-income instruments less attractive as long-term investments.”
The revived fears over the economy follow Moody’s downgrade of the United States’ credit rating nearly a week ago. The rating agency cut the nation’s sovereign credit rating down one notch to Aa1 from Aaa, pointing to the government’s ballooning deficit and the cost of rolling over its existing debt.
The major averages are heading for losses on the week, with the S&P 500 down nearly 2% through Thursday’s close. The Dow is on pace for a decline of about 1.9%, while the Nasdaq is tracking for 1.5% slide week to date.
On the economic front, investors will be watching for building permits and new home sales data out Friday.
Investors are also heading into a holiday weekend that will see the stock market closed for Memorial Day on Monday.

Japan’s core inflation accelerated to 3.5% in April, government data showed on Friday, bolstered in part by surging rice prices, as the central bank considers pausing its rate hike posture to assess the impact of U.S. tariffs.
The core inflation figure, which strips out prices for fresh food, was higher than expectations of 3.4%, according to economists polled by Reuters, marking the highest level since January 2023.
Headline inflation climbed 3.6% from a year ago, steady from the prior month and staying above the Bank of Japan’s 2% target for more than three years.
Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda has signaled his stance on intending to raise rates given price trends, while also citing the need to monitor closely the effects of U.S. tariffs.

Suspect charged in Washington DC killings of two foreign officials

Watch: Jeanine Pirro lays out charges against DC shooting suspect
The suspect accused of gunning down two Israeli embassy staff members outside a Jewish museum in Washington DC has been charged with first-degree *******, as well as ******* of foreign officials and related firearm charges.
Wednesday night’s attack is being investigating as a hate crime, and more charges are expected, US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said at a news conference.
“This is a death penalty-eligible case,” she said on Thursday, adding that it is too early to say whether prosecutors will decide to seek a death sentence.
Steve Jenson, from the FBI’s Washington DC field office, called the killings “an act of terror and directed violence against the Jewish community”.
Couple Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim were shot dead outside an event at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington DC around 21:08 local time (02:08 BST) on Wednesday, police said. The suspect opened fire on a group of four exiting the event, killing the two victims, police said.
Police identified the suspect as 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez from Chicago. He was arrested at the scene shortly after the shooting.
Officials said he was seen pacing outside the museum before opening fire. Eyewitnesses told the BBC he initially was mistaken for a traumatised bystander, and given aid inside the museum.
Police said the suspect also shouted “free Palestine” before he was taken into custody.
The suspect landed in the Washington DC area one day earlier, Jenson said, and investigators are still piecing together his whereabouts before the attack. Officials said they believe he travelled to Washington DC for a work conference.
Social media accounts linked to the suspect show he worked at the American Osteopathic Information Association (AOIA) in Chicago as an administrative specialist since 2024.
At his court hearing Thursday, the suspect was charged and ordered to remain in detention. His next hearing was scheduled for 18 June.
Reuters
Israel’s ambassador to the US Yechiel Leiter said shortly after the shooting that Mr Lischinsky planned to propose to Ms Milgrim during an upcoming trip they had planned to Jerusalem.
“They were a beautiful couple,” Leiter said at a news conference.
A vigil for Ms Milgrim was expected on Thursday in her hometown of Kansas City. She previously had spoken out about her fears of antisemitism in American public life. In 2017, she was interviewed by a local TV station after her school in Kansas was vandalised with a Nazi swastika.
“I worry about going to my synagogue, and now I have to worry about safety at school and that shouldn’t be a thing,” said Ms Milgrim, who was in her final year of high school at the time.
Police said the suspect was not on their radar and has no prior interactions with law enforcement. They said he admitted to the attack and is believed to have acted alone.
The gun used in the attack was a 9mm handgun legally purchased in Illinois in March 2020. Illinois has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the US.
Social media accounts linked to the suspect also indicate that he was heavily involved in the pro-************ protest movement. Officials said they are scouring his electronic devices and were also seen searching a home linked to the suspect in Chicago on Thursday.
One of his neighbours in Chicago, John Wayne Fry, told reporters that he lived in the same apartment building as the suspect for around a year.
The suspect displayed a photo outside his flat of a ************-American child who was killed in Chicago in 2023, Mr Fry said.
The man who killed six-year-old Wadee Alfayoumi was convicted of hate crime charges earlier this month. Officials said he was motivated by hatred for Islam and the conflict in Gaza.
It is unclear whether the suspect had any direct contact with the boy’s family.

Jojo Kalin, one of the event’s organisers in Washington DC, told the BBC that the event the victims attended was focused on how to build a coalition to help people suffering in Gaza amid the ongoing Israel-****** war.
She added it is “deeply ironic that what we were discussing was bridge building and then we were all hit over the head with such hatred”.
Watch: Event organiser describes giving suspected gunman water thinking he was bystander
The attack was condemned by world leaders, including *** Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who said he “thoroughly” condemns the “antisemitic attack” in Washington DC.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the attack “a heinous antisemitic *******” and added that security would be increased for Israeli representatives and diplomatic missions worldwide.
US President Donald Trump also decried antisemitism in response to the attack, writing on his social media platform Truth Social that “hatred and radicalism have no place in the USA.”
Trump and Netanyahu later spoke over the phone about the incident, where the US president expressed sorrow to his Israeli counterpart, according to a readout of the call.

US Supreme Court says Fed is unique, easing worries over Trump’s ability to fire Powell
US Supreme Court says Fed is unique, easing worries over Trump’s ability to fire Powell
By Ann Saphir and John Kruzel
(Reuters) -A U.S. Supreme Court ruling Thursday in a legal battle over President Donald Trump’s firing of two federal labor board members contained a line that eased, for now, worries that the cases could open the door for Trump to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell at will.
The court’s order allows Trump to keep the two Democratic labor board members sidelined while they challenge the legality of their removal.
Lawyers for Gwynne Wilcox, who was removed from the National Labor Relations Board, and for Cathy Harris, who was dismissed from the Merit Systems Protection Board, had argued that a ruling in favor of the Trump administration could undermine legal protections for Fed policymakers long seen as being insulated from presidential dismissal for reasons other than malfeasance or misconduct.
“We disagree,” a majority of justices said in the court’s brief, unsigned ruling. “The Federal Reserve is a uniquely structured, quasi-private entity that follows in the distinct historical tradition of the First and Second Banks.”
The two cases have been closely watched as proxies for whether Trump has the authority to fire officials at the Fed. The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 that created the nation’s third and still existing central bank stipulates that Fed officials may be dismissed only “for cause,” not for political or policy disagreements.
“This view of the Supreme Court really does ease my worries about their inclination to extrapolate from the NLRB cases to the Fed so I breathed a sigh of relief,” said LH Meyer analyst Derek *****, who has followed the cases closely.
Trump has repeatedly lashed out at Powell, whom he nominated to the post during his first term and who was renominated to a second term by Democratic President Joe Biden, and said he wants to see him gone from the central bank. Though Trump, who has attacked Powell over the Fed’s decision to not lower interest rates, recently said he has no intention of trying to fire Powell, the possibility has unsettled financial markets that bank on an independent Fed’s ability to do its job without political interference.
Powell has said he believes his firing would not be permitted under the law.
The Fed system’s seven governors, including the system chair, are appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. Powell’s term ends in May 2026, and Trump is expected to nominate a successor in the coming months.
Krishna Guha, a vice chair at Evercore ISI, said the Supreme Court’s opinion was encouraging but not definitive. “It strictly only addresses whether a ruling on Wilcox would ‘necessarily’ implicate the Fed,” he said
A Fed spokeswoman did not have a comment.

Asia-Pacific markets were set to mostly climb Friday as investors await a slew of economic data in the region.
Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 is set to open higher with the futures contract in Osaka last trading at 37,150 and the contract in Chicago at 37,055 against the index’s last close of 36,985.87.
Australia’s benchmark S&P/ASX 200 is also set to open higher, with futures standing at 8,388, higher than the index’s last close of 8,348.7.
Futures for Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index stood at 23,492, lower than its last close of 23,544.31.
Investors are parsing South Korea’s PPI figures for April and New Zealand’s retail sales for the first quarter of the year, which came out early Friday.
Japan and Singapore are slated to report inflation data for April, and Taiwan is releasing its industrial output figures later in the day.
U.S. stock futures were little changed as investors continue to evaluate the effect of higher U.S. Treasury yields on the economy. Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 14 points, or 0.03%. Nasdaq 100 futures were marginally lower, while S&P 500 futures ticked up 0.03%.
Overnight stateside, the three major averages closed mixed as investors grappled with fears of rising rates and worries about a ballooning U.S. deficit. The 30-year Treasury yield hit its highest since 2023 as lawmakers passed a bill that investors fear could worsen the U.S. deficit.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 1.35 points, closing at 41,859.09. The S&P 500 lost 0.04% and ended at 5,842.01, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.28% and settled at 18,925.73.
