  3. Aussie Percy perched on top of Senior PGA leaderboard Aussie Percy perched on top of Senior PGA leaderboard Cameron Percy shot a five-under 67 to lead some of the world’s biggest names after the first round of the Senior PGA Championship at Congressional. Keith Horne (68) is second while fellow South Africans Ernie Els (69) and Darren Fichardt are another shot back along with Simon Khan and Mario Tiziani. It is the second straight major for the seniors after Angel Cabrera’s victory Monday in the delayed Regions Tradition. Players dealt with wet conditions on a rainy day, but Percy was in one of the last groups to finish, and by then the sun was shining from one direction and a rainbow was forming in another. The 51-year-old Percy also hurt his back recently. “We’re all old now, so it’s pretty stiff,” he said. “On Sunday it was so wet and I slipped on a rock and made a mess of myself. I’ve been in the physio Monday, Tuesday for a good hour, hour and a half and then yesterday for another hour. I’m pretty sore right now.” Percy started on the back nine and took the lead thanks to an eagle on the par-5 sixth and a birdie two holes later. Percy credited his playing partner, Soren Kjeldsen, for setting a high standard as the Dane made an eagle and two birdies in the group’s first four holes. “He made it look really easy, so I was just trying to keep up with him to be honest with you. He started fantastic,” Percy said. “Then he missed a few putts. We were in the last group. The greens aren’t going to be perfect.” Els is back at the course where he won the 1997 US Open, although Congressional has certainly changed since then. “This one feels more like a major,” Els said. “Last week they called it a major, but it’s just a nice big Champions Tour event. But this one has got more of that feel. It’s got a golf course with history, and it’s got some prestige here.” The 53-year-old Horne has nine wins on South Africa’s Sunshine Tour, plus a victory last year in the Legends Tour’s Zambia Legends Championship. He holed out a wedge from 109 yards for an eagle on the par-4 eighth. Australians Stuart Appleby and Scott Hend are tied seventh, just two behind Percy, while compatriots Brendan Jones, Richard Green and Mark Hensby are all a shot further back in a tie for 24th. 4. ‘I am still in shock’ ‘I am still in shock’ They really got flipped the bird. Passengers in India shrieked in terror after their plane sustained damage to its nose following turbulence, hail and a bird strike, as seen in white-knuckle footage. The aircraft had been flying from the capital, New Delhi, to Srinagar, India, on Wednesday, when it encountered violent weather conditions, South West News Service reported. Footage shows petrified flyers screaming in panic as the plane is violently rocked by turbulence and lightning flashes illuminate the inside of the cabin. Passengers panic as the aircraft is beset by hail and turbulence. TIM / RashidF / SWNS The plane sustained damage to its nose during the storm. TIM / RashidF / SWNS The pilot notified Air Traffic Control (ATC) Srinagar of the extreme weather before safely landing at the destination, an hour and fifteen minutes after departure. Subsequent photos taken after landing show that the aircraft’s nose had a gaping hole, while hail reportedly caused mild internal damage, according to reports. Thankfully, none of the 227 passengers were injured in the storm. Nonetheless, many were shaken by the ordeal. “I was on this flight, heading now home,” recalled fly-witness Owais Hakeem. “It was terrible and I am still in shock.” “I had a narrow escape while flying from Delhi to Srinagar,” added fellow flyer Aaqib. “Hats off to the captain for the safe landing. Special mention to REMITA cabin crew for staying calm and professional.” The aircraft is currently slated for an inspection by ground crews. In a similar incident last June, an Austrian Airlines flight was beset by a surprise hailstorm that tore away part of the airplane’s nose and left the cockpit windows covered in cracks. Despite the heavy damage, the battered aircraft touched down safely in Vienna, Austria. 6. Disney delays next two Marvel ‘Avengers’ movies Disney delays next two Marvel ‘Avengers’ movies Walt Disney’s movie studio has postponed the release of the next two instalments in Marvel’s blockbuster Avengers series. Avengers: Doomsday will now be released on December 18, 2026, about seven months later than its previous date of May 1. It will bring Robert Downey Jr. back to the franchise as the villain, Doctor Doom. Disney also moved Avengers: Secret Wars to December 17, 2027 from May 2, 2027. The new schedule was chosen to give the filmmakers more time to complete the superhero movies, which are among the biggest Disney has ever made, a source familiar with the matter said. Doomsday is already in production. Avengers: Endgame, released in 2019, is the second-highest grossing movie of all time with $US2.8 billion ($A4.4 billion) in global ticket sales, behind Avatar with $US2.9 billion ($A4.5 billion). The Bulldog was guarding her human’s pool recently when she saw two invaders trying to weasel their way in — a pair of ducks! Well Pancake wasn’t going to let that fly, nope, not at all. And now a video of the dog taking action has people cracking up online. The Bulldog was truly peeved when she came outside and realized the ducks were back. What gives! This is her home and she wasn’t about to let these birds come and disturb her. The two birds were minding their own business, taking a swim in the water. Little did they know they’d be facing Pancake’s fury soon enough. Pancake was really in a huff. She spotted the ducks immediately and decided that they had to leave — right now! First the Bulldog staked out her prey and then like lightning (or a Bulldog’s version of lightning), she sprinted after them. Shoo, shoo! Related: Rescue Bulldog Receiving ‘Love Nibbles’ from Her Duck Besties Is Way Too Cute “Pancake had enough of the ducks on her property,” the video’s text overlay reads. “So she decided to take action. Watch her predator instincts kick in.” Sadly for Pancake, she didn’t get the ducks this time. But don’t worry, pupper! Next time you’ll get ‘em good! “What a close call,” the caption reads. People in the comments section couldn’t help but laugh. “Those ducks were almost pancakes themselves!!” joked one commenter. “They weren’t prepared for Pancake’s sheer agility and speed,” teased someone else. “We had ducks for the first time this year! Our dog chased them too! Pancake is so cute,” praised another person. “She meant business! I can just imagine her muttering ‘Yeah, you better…’” quipped another commenter. We bet those ducks won’t be coming back anytime soon, not with Pancake with around. Looking for more PetHelpful updates? Follow us on YouTube for more entertaining videos. 14. Supreme Court walls off Fed from Trump firings Supreme Court walls off Fed from Trump firings The Supreme Court protected the Federal Reserve Thursday even as it allowed President Trump to fire the board members of two other independent agencies, potentially insulating central bank officials such as chair Jerome Powell against any immediate removal by the White House. The nation’s highest court on Thursday let firings stand at the National Labor Relations Board and the Merit Systems Protection Board while legal challenges to those removals work their way through the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. But it said “we disagree” with arguments made by members of the National Labor Relations Board and the Merit Systems Protection Board that their legal challenges “necessarily implicate the constitutionality of for-cause removal protections for members of the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors or other members of the Federal Open Market Committee.” The central bank, the court added, “is a uniquely structured, quasi-private entity that follows in the distinct historical tradition of the First and Second Banks of the United States.” The only language in law pertaining specifically to the removal of Fed board members can be found in Section 10 of the Federal Reserve Act. The law states that each member of the board shall hold office for 14 years “unless sooner removed for cause by the President.” FILE PHOTO: U.S. President Donald Trump looks on as Jerome Powell, his nominee to become chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve moves to the podium at the White House in Washington, U.S., November 2, 2017. REUTERS/Carlos Barria/File Photo · Reuters / Reuters The statute doesn’t have any language that specifically addresses the chairman of the Board of Governors, nor does it detail what exactly constitutes “for cause.” The term has been interpreted in legal rulings to mean “inefficiency, neglect of duty, or malfeasance.” The court went out of its way to distinguish the Fed from the two agencies at issue, stating that the government would likely be able to show that both the NLRB and MSPB “exercise considerable executive power.” What Trump is trying to challenge is a 90-year-old Supreme Court precedent limiting the power of the president to dismiss independent agency board members except in cases of neglect or malfeasance. If that precedent eventually falls, a Powell firing could be easier to pull off at the Fed. Trump has also delivered pink slips to leaders of other federal agencies, including the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Election Commission, and those firings are also being challenged in lower courts. “There is no legal difference between Jerome Powell and me,” one FTC board member let go by Trump told Bloomberg earlier this year. “If the president can legally remove me, he can legally remove Jerome Powell.” Story Continues The president has mused publicly about his wish to show Powell the door, saying in a post to Truth Social that his “termination cannot come fast enough,” before clarifying that he does not intend to remove Powell before his term as chair is up in May 2026. Trump has held private talks with a potential replacement for Powell, former Fed governor Kevin Warsh, the Wall Street Journal reported. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett has also said that Trump and his team were indeed studying whether to fire Powell. But some of Trump’s economic aides have advised against removing Powell before his term is up. Powell, for his part, has repeatedly stressed that his firing is not permitted by law. He acknowledged in April that he has been following the case now before the Supreme Court testing Trump’s ability to remove board members at other independent agencies, but Powell said, “I don’t think that’s a case that will apply to the Fed.” Nonetheless, the central bank is “monitoring it carefully.” Click here for in-depth analysis of the latest stock market news and events moving stock prices Read the latest financial and business news from Yahoo Finance Source link #Supreme #Court #walls #Fed #Trump #firings Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  16. Porsche confirms expanded petrol and hybrid model range, job cuts Porsche confirms expanded petrol and hybrid model range, job cuts At the company’s annual general meeting (AGM) this week, Porsche confirmed it will “expand its product portfolio to include additional models with combustion engines and plug-in hybrid-drive systems”. Under the previous model plan, Porsche was essentially going to be an electric vehicle (EV) only manufacturer by 2030 with the exception of the 911 line, which constitutes about 20 per cent of the company’s sales. That idea is now being officially cast aside and the famed ******* performance car maker will instead continue to develop its existing internal combustion engine (ICE) models, while also forging ahead with its planned EVs. In his opening remarks to the AGM, CEO Oliver Blume said the change of tack was because “the ramp-up of electromobility has slowed considerably”. In 2024, EVs accounted for 26 per cent of all Porsches sold, up from 13 per cent the year before. A further 12 per cent of 2024’s sales came from plug-in hybrid models, up from 12 per cent in 2023. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert The Porsche CEO also revealed the company was “examining a new model series” for its SUV range, which will debut “towards the end of the decade”, and will be powered by internal combustion and hybrid drivetrains. It’s known the company is developing a large flagship SUV to be positioned above the Cayenne. Reports also indicate Porsche is developing a second-generation petrol-powered Macan to be sold alongside the new EV version. This Macan will reportedly be based on the Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), and be a close relation to the third-generation Audi Q5. On top of this, Mr Blume reiterated Porsche’s plan to continue developing and selling the petrol and hybrid versions of the Cayenne crossover and Panamera sedan. These models will continue to be sold “well into the 2030s”. Over on the EV side of the ledger, Porsche is developing an electric Cayenne, as well as an EV replacement for the 718 Boxster convertible and 718 Cayman coupe. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Developing more models than it initially planned isn’t Porsche’s only stress point. According to Mr Blume, the company’s sales in China have “literally collapsed”, and there are new and uncertain tariff barriers being erected in the US, as well as “trade conflicts and unstable supply chains”. To mitigate these financial impacts, the company will cut 3900 jobs by 2029, mostly through attrition and allowing contracts to expire. There will be cuts elsewhere, too, to ensure Porsche remains profitable even if only 250,000 vehicles are sold per year – in 2024 Porsche sold 311,000 cars worldwide. Porsche estimates that increased development costs, global uncertainty, and restructuring will cost it €1.3 billion this year. Despite the confluence of unfortunate events, Porsche remains profitable, just less so than before, with the company turning a profit of €5.6 billion (A$9.9 billion) last year. 17. A look at the deportees on plane that headed for South Sudan from US A look at the deportees on plane that headed for South Sudan from US The foreign men convicted of crimes who were placed on a deportation flight headed for the chaotic nation of South Sudan were originally from countries as far away as Vietnam. They had lived in various places from California to Iowa, Nebraska to Florida, with one serving a sentence of nearly 30 years. They were accused and convicted of crimes ranging from *******, to *****, robbery and assault. Despite their criminal records, a federal judge says the White House violated a court order on deportations to third countries, adding these eight migrants aboard the plane were not given a meaningful opportunity to object that the deportation could put them in danger. Judge Brian E. Murphy in Boston ordered a new set of interviews with the migrants, either back in the U.S. or abroad. Trump administration officials accused “activist judges” of advocating the release of dangerous criminals. “No country on Earth wanted to accept them because their crimes are so uniquely monstrous and barbaric,” said Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security. At least one of the victim’s family members has come out to oppose the way the deportation was conducted and the fact that her family wasn’t notified, while saying she had long hoped the man would leave the United States. These are the migrants who were part of the deportation flight. SOUTH SUDAN: Dian Peter Domach The only man from South Sudan on the flight was 33-year-old Dian Peter Domach. He was convicted in 2013 of robbery, for which he was sentenced to 8 to 14 years in prison; and of possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person, for which he was sentenced to 6 to 10 years. Those sentences were to be served one after the other. The Department of Homeland Security said Domach was also convicted of driving under the influence. While in prison, he was convicted of “assault by a confined person” and sentenced to an additional 18 to 20 months. According to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services, Domach was released on “discretionary parole” on May 2 and arrested by immigration authorities six days later. Records said he represented himself on appeal and in the most recent prison assault case. LAOS: Thongxay Nilakout One of the two deportees with life sentences is 48-year-old Thongxay Nilakout from Laos. He was convicted of killing a ******* woman and wounding her husband in 1994 when he was 17. The couple was visiting a popular tourist lookout east of Los Angeles during a trip to see their daughter. Nilakout was sentenced to life in prison but was released in 2023 after his case was reviewed following a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that said mandatory life sentences for minors were unconstitutional. Nilakout was ordered removed to Laos by an immigration judge in 2023 and waived appeal, court records show. The couple’s daughter, Birte Pfleger, is now a history professor at California State University, Los Angeles. She called it a “real moral dilemma,” explaining she is not happy with the way the deportation was conducted. “No matter which way you slice it, you cannot violate people’s due process. That’s a fundamental constitutional right that has existed for well over 250 years,” she said. But she hopes the man chooses to return voluntarily to Laos. Pfleger said she filled out forms that she has to be notified of any changes in Nilakout’s case, but wasn’t notified when the man was arrested by immigration authorities in January or when he was put on the flight. “He supposedly had plans for that because he still has some relatives in Laos,” she said. “Well, guess what? Now’s the time. Go call those relatives. Go home. Don’t come back.” MYANMAR: Kyaw Mya Kyaw Mya, a man from Myanmar who lived in Iowa, was convicted of ********* abusing a child under 12 years of age and sentenced to 10 years in prison, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Mya was ordered removed by an immigration judge in 2021, and lost his appeal of that order in 2023, according to a statement from Marcos Charles, an assistant director of field operations with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, in a court filing late Thursday. He was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in February. An attorney for Mya did not respond to phone calls seeking comment. MYANMAR: Nyo Myint Nyo Myint, another Burmese deportee, lived in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was accused in 2017 of ********* assaulting a 26-year-old woman with “diminished mental capacity” who ended up pregnant. The woman’s sister said the victim had a mental capacity equal to a 3-year-old and that Myint had told her he was the child’s father. An arrest affidavit filed by the police said Myint admitted to having sex with the woman at least two times, saying he knew her since 2003 and knew she had gone to a school for children with mental disabilities. He admitted he made a mistake and felt it was wrong to have sex with her. He was given a 12- to 14-year prison sentence in 2020 but released on probation in May 2023. He was ordered removed by an immigration judge that same year and waived appeal, court records show. ICE took custody of Myint in February. Nathan Sohriakoff remembers defending Myint in the Nebraska case and communicating with him via interpreters. He hadn’t heard he was part of the deportee group, which Trump administration officials are calling “barbaric monsters.” “He was a small man, very petite. He didn’t speak a word of English and didn’t resist the charges,” Sohriakoff said. “I don’t remember feeling like he was dangerous. My general feeling of him was that he was limited in his ability as well, like cognitively, but not to the degree that I felt he was incompetent.” VIETNAM: Tuan Thanh Phan The Department of Homeland Security says the flight included a Vietnamese man. Tuan Thanh Phan was convicted of first-degree ******* and second-degree assault and sentenced to 22 years in prison. An immigration judge ordered Phan removed to Vietnam in 2009, and he waived his appeal, court records show. He was arrested by ICE earlier this month. CUBA: Enrique Arias-Hierro The Department of Homeland Security says the flight included two men from Cuba: Enrique Arias-Hierro and Jose Manuel Rodriguez-Quinones. Florida court records show Arias-Hierro, now 46, served 15 years in a state prison after being convicted of robbery, kidnapping and falsely impersonating an officer in 2007. Homeland Security officials say he was also convicted of ********* and armed robbery, but the records in Miami-Dade County did not include that. Arias-Hierro had already been ordered removed to Cuba by an immigration judge back in 1999, and did not file an appeal, court records show. The attorney who last served as his public defender in 2024 did not respond to an email and phone call seeking comment. Arias-Hierro was taken by ICE earlier this month. CUBA: Jose Manuel Rodriguez-Quinones Immigration officials said in a court filing Thursday that Jose Manuel Rodriguez-Quinones was sentenced to 15 years in prison being convicted of arson in 2008 in Florida. Additional convictions for drug trafficking, being a felon in possession of a weapon, and possession of drug paraphernalia followed, said Charles, ICE’s assistant director of field operations, in a statement filed in court. In 2022, he was convicted of attempted first-degree ******* and sentenced to four years in prison, the document shows. Charles’ declaration did not say if Rodriguez-Quinones was ever seen by an immigration judge. He was arrested by ICE last month. MEXICO: Jesus Munoz-Gutierrez A ******** man was also placed on the deportation flight. Immigration officials say Jesus Munoz-Gutierrez was recently “identified as and admitted to being a member of a criminal organization.” The Department of Homeland Security says Jesus Munoz-Gutierrez was convicted of second-degree ******* and sentenced to life in prison. An immigration judge ordered him deported to Mexico in 2005, and Munoz-Gutierrez waived his appeal, court records show. It was unclear why he would be flown to South Sudan or beyond when Mexico is just south of the United States. ______ Associated Press writers Margery Beck in Omaha, Nebraska, and Rebecca Boone in Boise, Idaho, contributed to this report. 20. Trump says autism ‘has to be artificially induced’ Trump says autism ‘has to be artificially induced’ President Trump said Thursday that autism must not occur naturally, citing figures inflating the spike in autism and suggesting the administration’s Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) Commission could provide answers. “When you hear 10,000, it was 1 in 10,000, and now it’s 1 in 31 for autism, I think that’s just a terrible thing. It has to be something on the outside, has to be artificially induced, has to be,” Trump said at a MAHA Commission event. “And we will not allow our public health system to be captured by the very industries it’s supposed to oversee. So we’re demanding the answers, the public is demanding the answers and that’s why we’re here.” He noted that the administration is phasing out eight of the most common artificial food dyes, after the Food and Drug Administration announced actions last month to phase out the use of petroleum-based food dyes in U.S. food products, citing concerns over potential health impacts on children. 25. Why Google working with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster gives me confidence about the future of smart glasses Why Google working with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster gives me confidence about the future of smart glasses Google’s unveiling of a new line of AI-fueled smart glasses built on the Android XR platform was only one of dozens of announcements at Google I/O this year. Even so, one facet in particular caught my eye as more important than it might have seemed to a casual viewer. While the idea of wearing AI-powered lenses that can whisper directions into your ears while projecting your to-do list onto a mountain vista is exciting, it’s how you’ll look while you use them that grabbed my attention. Specifically, Google’s partnership with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster to design their new smart glasses. The spectre of Google Glass and the shadow cast by the so-called Glassholes weraring them went unmentioned, but it’s not hard to see the partnerships as part of a deliberate strategy to avoid repeating the mistakes made a decade ago. Wearing Google Glass might have said, “I’m wearing the future,” but it also hinted, “I might be filming you without your consent.” No one will think that Google didn’t consider the fashion aspect of smart glasses this time. Meta’s Ray-Ban collaboration is based on a similar impulse. You may like If you want people to wear computers on their faces, you have to make them look good. Warby Parker and Gentle Monster are known for creating glasses that appeal to millennials and Gen Z, both in look and price. “Warby Parker is an incredible brand, and they’ve been really innovative not only with the designs that they have but also with their consumer retail experience. So we’re thrilled to be partnered with them,” said Sameer Samat, president of Google’s Android Ecosystem, in an interview with Bloomberg. “I think between Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, they’re going to be great designs. First and foremost, people want to wear these and feel proud to wear them.” Smart fashion Wearables are not mini smartphones, and treating them that way has proven to be a mistake. Just because you want to scroll through AR-enhanced dog videos doesn’t mean you don’t want to look good simultaneously. Plus, smart glasses may be the best way to integrate generative AI like Google Gemini into hardware. Compared to the struggles of the Humane AI Pin, the Rabbit R1, and the Plaud.ai NotePin, smart glasses feel like a much safer bet. We already live in a world saturated with wearable tech. Smartwatches are ubiquitous, and wireless earbuds also have microphones and biometric sensors. Glasses occupy a lot of your face’s real estate, though. They’re a way people identify you far more than your watch. Augmented reality devices sitting on your nose need to be appealing, no matter which side of the lenses you look at. Combine that with what the smart glasses offer wearers, and you have a much stronger product. They don’t have to do everything, just enough to justify wearing them. The better they look, the less justification you need for the tech features. Teaming up with two companies that actually understand design shows that Google understands that. Google isn’t pretending to be a fashion house. They’re outsourcing style strategies to people who know what they’re doing. Google seems to have learned that if smart glasses are going to work as a product, they need to blend in with other glasses, not proclaim to the world that someone is wearing them. How much they cost will matter, as setting smart glasses prices to match high-end smartphones will slow adoption. But if Google leverages Warby Parker and Gentle Monster’s direct-to-consumer experience to keep prices reasonable, they might entice a lot more people, and possibly undercut their rivals. People are used to spending a few hundred dollars on prescription glasses a reasonably sized extra charge for AI will be just another perk, like polarized prescription sunglasses. Success here might also ripple out to smaller, but fashionable eyewear brands. Your favorite boutique frame designer might eventually offer ‘smart’ as a category, like they do with transition lenses today. Google is making a bet that people will choose to wear technology if it looks like something they would choose to wear anyway, and a bet on people wanting to look good is about as safe a bet I can imagine.
