He scored 19 points before the break. In the third quarter, Gilgeous-Alexander drove to the paint and threw up a wild shot that went in as he was fouled by his cousin, Alexander-Walker. Gilgeous-Alexander made the free throw to give the Thunder a 73-64 lead. A lob by Cason Wallace to Holmgren for a two-handed jam on a fast break put the hosts up 82-65 late in the third term. What’s happening? According to a park spokesperson, the dead hippos were discovered along the Ishasha River and its banks. USA Today confirmed that between 40 and 50 hippopotamuses died suddenly. “Unfortunately, this has happened before, and it’s to do with when the rains come at this time of year,” said a park spokesperson per USA Today. Anthrax is a serious bacterial disease caused by Bacillus anthracis, a pathogen that lives in soil. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains that wild and domestic animals can become infected when they breathe in, eat, or drink spores in contaminated environments, especially after heavy rains disturb the soil. Why does it matter? Virunga is Africa’s oldest national park and one of the most biodiverse areas in the world. It’s also home to many threatened species, and the hippo population there is already on the brink. There were nearly 30,000 hippos in the 1970s. Tariff crossfire hits Toyota, Nissan, Ford suppliers in Japan Tariff crossfire hits Toyota, Nissan, Ford suppliers in Japan By Maki Shiraki, Daniel Leussink TAKASAKI, Japan (Reuters) -Four decades ago, Hiroko Suzuki’s father threaded the needle of a U.S. trade war by pushing the family auto-parts business into newer niche products. Now, tariffs imposed by the Trump administration are so sweeping they threaten her own attempt to diversify the 78-year-old company into medical devices. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has called the U.S. tariffs, including 25% on automobiles, a “national crisis” for the world’s fourth-largest economy. Japan’s top trade negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, headed to Washington on Friday for a third round of talks. The worry is evident at companies like Kyowa Industrial, a maker of prototype parts and race-car components based in Takasaki, north of Tokyo. Kyowa, which employs 120 people, was among six auto suppliers that told Reuters they were concerned about their ability to withstand the tariff pressure on Japan’s car industry. “What in the world are we going to do?” Suzuki, Kyowa’s third-generation president, recalled thinking when the tariffs were announced. “This is going to be bad.” Workers walk between precision-machining machines for automotive parts inside a factory at Kyowa Industrial Co. in Takasaki The problems Kyowa and other auto suppliers face illustrate a decades-long shift in Japan, which no longer floods the world with chips and consumer electronics and is reliant on an auto industry threatened by intense ******** competition. That marks a contrast with the 1980s, when the U.S. slapped trade barriers on a rising Japan and its then-barnstorming exports. This report, which is based on interviews with a dozen people, including industry executives, bankers and senior government officials, provides a first-hand account of how one firm is grappling with the uncertainty, and details the deepening squeeze on the automotive supply chain at a time of profound disruption. Kyowa and thousands of other small manufacturers comprise an auto-supply network that has for decades pursued a “monozukuri” (literally, “making things”) approach to production. That culture of incremental improvement and assembly-line efficiency, based on methods developed by Toyota, helped make Japan a juggernaut. But the shift to battery-powered smart cars has meant software, in which EV makers such as Tesla and China’s BYD excel, has become a ******* selling point. Kyowa started developing neurosurgery instruments in 2016 after Suzuki, now 65, realised the rise of EVs would eventually hammer demand for engine components. It began selling the instruments in the U.S. last year, only to find that Trump’s tariffs also applied to medical devices. Kyowa doesn’t export auto components to the U.S., but Suzuki worries automakers will force suppliers to cut prices to offset tariffs. So far, that hasn’t happened to her. One Subaru Corp supplier said his company may have to start looking for partners expanding outside the U.S. Major automakers have largely offered muted support for suppliers since Trump’s tariff announcements. Last month, Toyota, Nissan and Ford sent letters to the U.S. arms of some Japanese suppliers asking for cooperation in the face of tariffs, according to copies reviewed by Reuters, without offering specifics. The letters haven’t been previously reported. Nissan told suppliers they should stick to previously agreed prices. It said it was “not obliged” to bear the costs of tariffs but that it would shoulder some of the hit for up to four weeks to help secure its supply chain. It added that it could later seek to recover any support payments to suppliers. Reuters couldn’t determine how much support, if any, Nissan extended. The automakers haven’t sent follow-up letters, according to two suppliers, who allowed Reuters to review the correspondence on condition of anonymity. Nissan told Reuters it was working with suppliers to mitigate the tariff impact and contain costs, including through localisation. Toyota said it would seek to protect its suppliers, dealers, and employees while maintaining customers’ trust as it navigated the uncertainty created by the tariffs. Ford told Reuters it was working with suppliers to assess their exposure and potentially reconfigure processes and sourcing. In its letter, Toyota said it understood the “complexity and financial burden some suppliers are facing” and asked suppliers to identify and share mitigation measures. Toyota would work with suppliers “in good faith”, it said. Some Toyota suppliers, including Denso, have not given earnings forecasts for the coming year, citing uncertainty. Julie Boote, an analyst at research firm Pelham Smithers Associates, said the trade war posed an “emergency” for Japan’s auto industry that would hasten consolidation. “In order to survive, these automakers will have to work together,” she said. SQUEEZED ON COST Japanese manufacturers traditionally put pressure on smaller suppliers to lower prices, said Sayuri Shirai, a former Bank of Japan board member who is now a professor at Keio University. If the tariffs remain in place in the longer term, it would spell more damage for regional economies hollowed out by demographic decline, she said. The risks for Japan are already clear. The economy shrank in the first quarter, and Tokyo has compiled emergency economic measures to ease the pain of tariffs. “Automobile exports are just too important to Japan for a 25% tariff to stay in place,” said David Boling, a former U.S. trade official who is now a director at consulting firm Eurasia Group. Boling said the U.S. is unlikely to go below the 10% it agreed with Britain. Trump introduced a 25% tariff on automobiles and later a 24% tariff on all Japanese goods. The latter was slashed to 10% for 90 days, which runs out in July. Akazawa, the trade envoy, on Tuesday said Japan was sticking to its guns and wanted tariffs eliminated. A White House spokesperson declined to comment on the negotiations. A U.S. State Department spokesperson said the Trump administration wanted trading partners to align with U.S. efforts to achieve “fairness and balance in our trading relationships and protect U.S. economic and national security.” Two senior Japanese officials told Reuters Japan’s auto industry was increasingly looking like a laggard and needed to use the tariffs as an opportunity to implement sweeping changes to catch up with EV rivals. In a statement, the trade ministry said that regardless of U.S. tariffs, Japan’s auto industry needed to respond to significant changes in the competitive environment. Japan’s top auto suppliers, called Tier 1, procure parts from Tier 2 suppliers, and so on down the chain. At the bottom are firms that can be little more than neighbourhood workshops grinding out a single part. Government officials have previously urged smaller companies to innovate and consolidate, to gain scale. At regional lender Ashikaga Bank, an automotive industry team supports some 200 companies, around 80% of which are Tier 2 or lower suppliers. A member of the team not authorised to speak publicly said they worried tariffs would lead to higher vehicle prices and a decline in Japanese car sales in the U.S., hitting the bank’s clients. Shinichi Iizuka, president of Toa Kogyo, a suspension maker in Subaru’s hometown of gaming platforms, near Takasaki, said the tariff burden will likely be shared by consumers, car dealers, automakers and suppliers. Some 70% of Subaru’s car sales are in the U.S., where it relies on both local manufacturing and imports. On Monday, Subaru said it would raise prices on several U.S. models. Subaru CFO Shinsuke Toda this month said it was willing to talk with suppliers about sharing their burden, adding the situation remained unclear. IT’S PERSONAL Suzuki’s drive to diversify Kyowa Industrial into medical devices mirrors the pivot made by her father during the 1980s trade friction, when Kyowa ditched mass production of less-profitable auto parts to focus on higher-margin prototypes and racing-engine components. Suzuki took over in 2000 and her father died in 2013. Before Trump’s tariffs, Suzuki had planned to build a U.S. track record in sales of medical equipment to smooth entry into other markets. With the advent of the U.S. trade barriers, she said her team considered moving production to the U.S., where costs are high, or shifting the sales focus to Asia. Given the uncertainty around Trump’s announcements, Kyowa is in talks with potential distributors in Singapore and Hong Kong, Suzuki said. Around 70% of Kyowa’s business still comes from automakers, while chip-equipment makers and Japan’s space program contribute to the remainder. It supplies most Japanese car makers, General Motors and parts for Formula One race cars. Annual sales are a modest 2 billion yen ($14 million). Still, Kyowa is larger than three-quarters of the roughly 68,000 companies that make up Japan’s auto-supply chain, according to research firm Teikoku Databank. For Suzuki, trade friction is also personal, given her deep affection for the U.S. She grew up listening to rock music on U.S. armed forces radio, learned English and went to university in America. She remembers seeing Aerosmith live at their first concert in Japan. “Japan and America have a long history of friendship. I hope they can find a solution,” she said. A good adventurer should take care of it! You can try to fight against the oppression by convincing the nice folks of Cheydinhal. Let’s talk to one of the victims of Ulrich, Aldos Othran, who is homeless and drinks on his day off. Convince him to testify to fight against Unrich and his reign of terror. After being convinced, he goes to his house to claim back what’s his. It doesn’t go as planned, as it soon erupts into a fight, where he gets killed by the guard. Enraged by the harrowing experience Aldos went through, the citizens of Cheydinhal take matters into their own hands. One of the NPCs, Llevana Nedaren, takes the fight against Ulrich by threatening to expose him. Ulrich takes the bait by visiting her, where he gets killed by the NPC, and she gets captured for *******. Bitter-sweet justice, right? Well, you can take the alternative path, which doesn’t involve violence and deals with matters legally. Makes it worse once you know this path. 2 Dooming an entire village to stay invisible by being stupid It’s a bit funny, though. | Image Credit: Bethesda If you talk to the Inn-Keeper at Roxey Inn, you’ll get to know about a strange village named Aleswell, where the inhabitants are invisible. Once you visit the place, you get to know that it is because of a mage who is oblivious to his experiments. Like a good Samaritan, you visit the tower where he resides, and tell him about his doing. To fix his mistakes, he gives you a scroll with instructions that should be followed. The scroll should be used at the center of the village to lift the spell. What if you didn’t follow his instructions and used it somewhere else? Well, the scroll does its thing, but it doesn’t affect the village. So you go back to the mage for a backup scroll, the last of its kind, which you waste again. Bill Lee in last words before execution After narrowly avoiding death in 2022, Oscar Franklin Smith was executed by the state of Tennessee on May 22, the first execution since February 2020. Smith, 75 and sentenced to die for a triple ******* in Nashville in 1989, spoke his last words from a gurney inside Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville at 10:32 a.m. He spoke for 3 minutes and primarily addressed Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee. “Somebody needs to tell the governor the justice system doesn’t work,” he said. “He’s the last word and the last person to give justice where justice is needed. Too many innocent people are being killed.” Smith suggested the governor “quit” and “get a backbone.” He was administered a lethal injection of pentobarbital, a barbiturate, minutes later and was declared dead at 10:47 a.m. This was the fourth time state officials had set an execution date for Smith. The first two were postponed during the pandemic, and Gov. Lee called off the third about an hour before the execution when it was revealed the state didn’t follow its own lethal injection protocol. Executions were ultimately called off for the next three years while there was an independent audit and the state finalized a new lethal injection protocol. Smith was convicted in 1990 of ******* in the October 1989 killings of his estranged wife, 35-year-old Judy Robirds Smith, and her sons from a previous marriage, 16-year-old Chad Burnett and 13-year-old Jason Burnett. All three were killed in the Lutie Court home they shared in Nashville’s Woodbine neighborhood. Smith and his wife were separated when he shot his her in the neck and then stabbed her multiple times. Chad suffered a gunshot wound to his left eye, upper chest and left torso, while Jason was stabbed in the neck and abdomen. Major push to change how patients are triaged after Westfield Bondi Junction attack Major push to change how patients are triaged after Westfield Bondi Junction attack Paramedics responding to the fatal Westfield Bondi Junction stabbing rampage were so committed to their patients they found it difficult to move on, with an inquest told an international tool to triage patients could have been significantly beneficial on the day of the attack. Dawn Singleton, Yixuan Cheng, Faraz Ahmed Tahir, Ashlee Good, ***** Young and Pikria Darchia were all killed by Joel Cauchi at Westfield Bondi Junction on April 13, 2024, before he was then shot dead by police. A coronial inquest into the attack was told some paramedics were hesitant to move on as they were so committed to treating their patients on the day of the fatal attack, with experts convening on Friday to discuss the benefits of implementing a *** innovation coined the ten second triage (TST) tool in NSW. First responders walk through a series of rapid steps to triage a patient, with prompts including is the person walking, talking or breathing. Patients are then quickly assessed as priority one or priority two, and lifesaving interventions are carried out. Emergency medicine expert Phil Cowburn told the court that seconds was simply a guideline: for instance, patients who are walking can be triaged in less than 10 seconds, while it may take longer to check if a patient has penetrating injuries and such. “You shouldn’t stop at 10 seconds, you should carry on until the lifesaving interventions are done, but on average when looking at a large number of patients … it takes on average 10 seconds per patient to triage,” Dr Cowburn told the court. Dr Cowburn explained that a patient may have been declared dead under previous triage tools; however, it was a “very quick decision to make under a lot of stress”. “It felt inappropriate to us that we were putting our responders under that level of pressure to make that decision quickly,” Dr Cowburn told the inquest. A category silver allows the chance for resuscitation to be given if felt appropriate and for any responder – not just healthcare professionals – to make that decision. Dr Cowburn also said bystanders would not be stopped from applying aid to someone triaged as a category silver. “No patient would inadvertently be declared deceased if that was perhaps not appropriate,” Dr Cowburn said. The first responding paramedic and forward commander on the day of the attack, Brett Simpson, earlier agreed that TST could have been useful in responding to the Bondi attack, particularly the use of category silver. Counsel assisting the coroner Peggy Dwyer SC earlier said one reason for the category silver was to combat the adverse impact on first responders in having to make the declaration of deceased. While Inspector Simpson said this wasn’t a “problem” on the day of the fatal attack, it was “definitely a factor”. “Our crews are very well trained, but in a situation like that when their bandwidth is completely and wholly exceeded by the environment that they’re in, some of them potentially may not have felt comfortable in making that declaration,” he said. The inquest is a learning exercise for any future mass tragedy. Police officers on scene at the Bondi attack may have been able to help paramedics identify patients who were a priority and of silver category quicker, improving situational awareness on the day of the Bondi attack, the court was told on Friday. Emergency physician Stefan Mazur said “the current triage system, whilst works OK – even in exercise it kind of works OK – but under pressure it does tend to not work as well as you like”. The inclusion of lifesaving interventions, and giving other responders such as police the language to communicate what resources are needed for the patients in front of them, were some benefits highlighted by NSW Ambulance acting executive director of medical services and research Thomas Evens. “Collectively … the TST package I think would have a significant impact on the capability of the NSW government’s response to patients in an incident such as (Bondi),” Dr Evens said. However, he noted it would be “quite a fundamental change in the way emergency services undertake their activity” and would need to be implemented across all emergency services with joint emergency services interoperability principles. Inspector Simpson earlier told the court that it was an impressive tool and “takes the clinical aspect out of it”. “You could effectively train anyone in this room on how to then triage a patient and then provide that information to a clinician as they approach,” he said. Police are generally on scene first and were at the shopping centre in large numbers on April 13, 2024. Eating too much could impact your heart and brain health by increasing inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance. If you haven’t stayed up-to-date on health news lately, here’s a quick headline for you: Ultra-processed foods aren’t so great for your health. In fact, studies have linked them to a slew of health issues, including diabetes and ******* risk, and having a lot of ultra-processed foods in your diet can even potentially make you age faster. But up to 70 percent of the food supply in America is made up of these products, making them tough to entirely avoid. Still, it’s never a bad idea to take a step back to assess what you’re eating on a daily basis, especially when we’re still learning about how ultra-processed foods could affect us. Case in point: Two recent studies have found an association between eating ultra-processed foods and a higher risk of developing heart disease and Parkinson’s disease. Given how life-altering each of these conditions can be, it’s understandable to have concerns. Here’s what dietitians and doctors want you to keep in mind. Meet the experts: Keri Gans, RDN, CDN, nutrition consultant and host of The Keri Report; Jessica Cording, RD, author of The Little Book of Game-Changers: 50 Healthy Habits For Managing Stress & Anxiety; Sonya Angelone, RD, a nutritionist and registered dietitian based in San Francisco, California; Cheng-Han Chen, MD, an interventional cardiologist and medical director of the Structural Heart Program at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills, CA; Daniel Truong, MD, neurologist and medical director of the Truong Neuroscience Institute at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, CA. What did the heart disease study find? The heart disease study isn’t published yet, but it was presented at the American College of Cardiology’s annual meeting in May. The scientific review analyzed data from 8,286,940 adults across 41 studies that looked at the link between ultra-processed foods and health issues. The researchers found a link between ultra-processed foods and high blood pressure, cardiovascular events (like a heart attack), *******, digestive diseases, and dying from any cause. Each extra 100 grams (3.5 ounces) a day of ultra-processed foods was linked with a 14.5 percent higher risk of high blood pressure, 5.9 percent increased risk of cardiovascular events, 1.2 percent increased risk of *******, 19.5 percent higher risk of digestive diseases and 2.6 percent higher risk of dying from any cause, according to the findings. There was also a link between eating ultra-processed foods and an increased risk of obesity, diabetes, and depression or anxiety. “Reducing ultra-processed foods intake, even modestly, may offer measurable health benefits,” study co-author Xiao Liu, MD, a cardiologist at Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, China, said in a statement. What did the brain degeneration study find? This study was published in the journal Neurology and analyzed data from nearly 43,000 people with an average age of 48 who didn’t have Parkinson’s disease at the start of the study. The participants were followed for 26 years, during which time they completed regular medical exams, filled out food diaries, and answered health questionnaires. The researchers divided the participants into five groups based on how much ultra-processed foods they ate per day. They discovered that people who ate 11 or more servings of ultra-processed foods a day had a 2.5 times higher risk of having three or more early signs of Parkinson’s disease than those who had less than three servings a day. (Those early signs included things like rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, constipation, depressive symptoms, body pain, impaired color vision, excessive daytime sleepiness, and a reduced ability to smell.) It’s important to point out that what the researchers counted as a “serving” can really add up. Like, one tablespoon of ketchup is a serving, and so is an ounce of potato chips. While the study didn’t find that ultra-processed foods caused people to develop Parkinson’s disease, the researchers pointed out that these early symptoms tend to come before a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis. Why might ultra-processed foods affect your heart and brain? There are a few potential biological things going on here that could be resulting in this data that links ultra-processed foods with heart and brain health issues. “It is thought that ultra-processed foods affect cardiovascular health through multiple mechanisms, including promotion of inflammation, increasing oxidative stress, and increasing insulin resistance,” explains Cheng-Han Chen, MD, an interventional cardiologist and medical director of the Structural Heart Program at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills, CA. This can cause damage to blood vessels, create a build-up of plaque in your arteries—and raise the risk of heart attack or stroke, he explains. But despite the health risks, ultra-processed foods can be hard to resist, says Daniel Truong, MD, neurologist and medical director of the Truong Neuroscience Institute at MemorialCare Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, CA. They “rapidly stimulate the brain’s reward system, similar to addictive substances like nicotine and alcohol,” per Dr. Truong. As a result, you may end up eating a lot of these foods, raising the risk of health issues in the process. How else can ultra-processed foods harm your health? A big potential issue with ultra-processed foods is that they tend to crowd out healthier options, says Jessica Cording, MS, RD, author of The Little Book of Game-Changers: 50 Healthy Habits For Managing Stress & Anxiety. “If [a person is] eating a lot of ultra-processed foods that don’t offer much in the way of nutrients but contain a lot of calories, it can set them up for adverse health issues,” she says. Plus, these foods have been associated with higher risk of *******, digestive problems, depression, anxiety, and diabetes, says Sonya Angelone, RD, a nutritionist based in San Francisco, CA. “There is a dose-response relationship between these foods and poor health, which means the more ultra-processed foods you eat, the greater the risk for negative health,” she adds. But there’s some good news: “Reducing these foods even a little bit with less processed whole foods can provide some health improvements,” says Dr. Angelone. That’s why it’s so crucial to focus on whole foods when building out your diet, says Keri Gans, RDN, CDN, nutrition consultant and host of The Keri Report. “Instead of obsessing over what to cut out of our diets, we should think more about adding more plant-based foods, such as 100 percent whole grains, veggies, fruits, nuts, seeds, and legumes,” she says. Cording says there’s no need to panic if you have some ultra-processed foods in your diet, given that they’re almost impossible to completely avoid. But focusing on sourcing the bulk of your diet from whole foods could make a big difference in your overall health. “Just do your best,” she says. The facility is intended to reduce recidivism by directing low-risk offenders there who can undergo targeted residential programs focused on education and rehabilitation. It can house up to 193 individuals (147 males and 43 females) in two separate housing wings with a maximum stay of 180 days. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office told The Dispatch that it was not notified about the breakout for about an hour and half after it happened, believed to be sometime around 8:45 p.m., and that the office is only taking a report about the incident because this happens often. The Eagles announced on Friday that Kelly, exciting wingman Tyrell Dewar and athletic utility Jack Hutchinson have all penned new multi-year deals. Kelly’s two-year extension takes him to 2027, while Dewar is now locked in until the end of 2028 after being handed a three-year deal. Hutchinson was already contracted for 2026, and his new three-year deal secures his future until the end of 2029. Kelly was linked with a shock move to Fremantle at the end of last year following another dismal season from the Eagles. West Coast had won just 10 games across the previous three seasons, and Kelly spoke openly in February about how his love for the game hadn’t been great in recent years. More concerns about Kelly’s mindset were raised earlier this year when his poor form resulted in him being dropped to the WAFL. Pique Coffee has joined forces with Mens Talk to trial two new Friday after-work events — the first of which starts on Friday. Mens Talk, a not-for-profit group dedicated to breaking the stigma around mental health and creating positive futures for men, will get 10 per cent of bar sales during the special openings. Over the past few months, Pique Coffee owners Jase and Claire Millar have been working on a range of alcohol-free drinks and mocktails, including some inspired by coffee, to offer at the Pique Coffee Non-Alc SO-Bar.
