Stephen Dawson urges Kimberley families to grab student assistance payment before deadline Stephen Dawson urges Kimberley families to grab student assistance payment before deadline Kimberley parents are being encouraged to cash in on the WA Student Assistance Payment by Minister for the Kimberley Stephen Dawson. The payment offers $150 per child in kindy or primary school and $250 per high school student, in a bid to help pay for school essentials, from uniforms and school shoes to laptops. “The Cook Government is committed to supporting regional families with the cost of living, and this payment is one way we’re delivering on that commitment,” Mr Dawson said. Families have until Friday, July 4 to make their claim, and are told the easiest way to do it is through the ServiceWA app. For those who need a hand with the digital side of things, there’s also in-person help available at libraries across the Kimberley including a Digital Assist Kiosk at Broome Library. Education Department staff are also hitting the road to help families and schools navigate the process. “We encourage families to claim their payment as soon as possible to help with education expenses,” Mr Dawson said. “The ServiceWA app is the most efficient and secure way to make a claim for WASAP, but families can also claim through our alternate methods using the web or paper form.” To find out more or to get support, visit education.wa.edu.au/wasap. BYD beats Tesla in European EV sales despite higher tariffs: Report BYD beats Tesla in European EV sales despite higher tariffs: Report Though the difference between the two brands’ monthly sales totals is relatively small, the implications of BYD beating out Tesla “are enormous,” says Felipe Munoz, global automotive analyst at JATO Dynamics. Jaap Arriens | Nurphoto | Getty Images BYD sold more pure battery electric vehicles in Europe than Tesla for the first time ever last month — a “watershed moment” for the region’s car market, according to a report from JATO Dynamics. New car registrations data from the automotive intelligence firm shows that BYD’s Europe volumes rose 359% in April from last year as the company continues its global expansion efforts. Over the same *******, Tesla reported yet another monthly drop, with total volumes down 49%, JATO said. That follows protests against CEO Elon Musk and the company in the region. According to Felipe Munoz, global automotive analyst at JATO, though the difference between the two brands’ monthly sales totals is relatively small, the implications of BYD beating out Tesla “are enormous.” “This is a watershed moment for Europe’s car market, particularly when you consider that Tesla has led the European BEV market for years, while BYD only officially began operations beyond Norway and the Netherlands in late 2022,” Munoz said. JATO added that BYD is also beating well established European car brands across the region, outselling Fiat and Seat in France, for example. That growth comes even before production begins at its new plant in Hungary, which is expected to become the center of European production operations. Tariff shrug BYD’s success in the EU comes despite the economic bloc’s imposition of punitive tariffs on battery EVs made in China last October. It attributed the move to unfair trade practices. The punitive tariffs appeared to be favorable to Tesla, assigning its made-in-China vehicles a 7.8% duty compared with BYD’s 17%. Other ******** EV makers were given tariffs as high as about 35%. The EU also has a standard 10% car import duty. JATO’s report said that while tariffs had an initial impact on the sales of ******** automakers, the companies have mitigated it by expanding and diversifying their European line-ups with the introduction of plug-in hybrids. “China is not only the world leader in BEVs; its automakers are global leaders in plug-in hybrid vehicles too,” Munoz said. Battery EVs run entirely on electricity, while hybrid vehicles combine an electric battery with an internal combustion engine. Hybrid vehicles have not yet been targeted by EU tariffs. Meanwhile, there has been growing demand in the region’s EV segment, with JATO data showing that registrations of battery EVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles are up by 28% and 31%, respectively, despite declines among internal combustion engine vehicles. Registrations of all electric vehicles made by ******** automakers in April rose by 59% year on year, reaching almost 15,300 units in April, the report added. Ahead of the EU’s tariff decision last year, Rhodium had predicted that tariffs would need to be as high as 55% for the European market to be unattractive for ******** EV exporters. In March, it was revealed that Tesla, which only sells pure battery vehicles, fell behind BYD in total annual sales. Tesla’s shares have fallen over 10% over the same ******* amid blowback from Musk’s involvement with the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump. Adults barge onto California high school campus to attack student: VIDEO Adults barge onto California high school campus to attack student: VIDEO The Brief A group of adults barged their way onto a high school campus in Riverside to fight a student, police said. Officers said after an earlier fight between students, one of the students called their family for backup. The school it’s reviewing its safety protocols. RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A group of adults forced their way into a Riverside school this week and attacked a student and school employees. What we know It started with a fight between students at Martin Luther King High School in Riverside on Tuesday. Then, police told FOX 11, one of the students involved in the initial fight called family members, who showed up at the school later. The group of adults barged its way onto campus and began fighting with the other student from the first fight. SUGGESTED: California state senator from Riverside cited for DUI near State Capitol “He brought in like his mom and everything else, and I was like, ‘Whoa,’” one student told FOX 11. “It was like 20 people coming in behind him too.” Another student said that the group started “punching the guy like crazy,” and that a school administrator tried to stop the fight, but the group grabbed him, threw him to the ground, and “had him in a chokehold on the ground.” By the time officers got to the school, the family members had run off. Paramedics took the other student to the hospital with non-serious injuries. Riverside police arrested one student and took them to juvenile hall. One student has also been charged with battery, police said, while five adults have been charged with battery and trespassing. What we don’t know Police did not identify the adults who had been charged. What they’re saying Parents are upset that the school wasn’t locked down, and students are wondering why no one stopped the group from getting on campus. “Our students and staff were not notified that this was happening on the campus,” said parent Vanessa Brogdon. Other students called the incident “unacceptable.” “You don’t know what they could have had,” another student said. “They could have had a dangerous weapon that could have harmed more people here.” The other side In a letter to parents, the school said that administrators followed the group when the adults barged in and called police, who responded quickly. The school says it is working with the district to review and strengthen safety measures. The Riverside Police Department is investigating. The full letter from the school can be read below: “Dear Martin Luther King High School Families and staff: We want to inform you about a serious incident that occurred on our campus earlier today. Due to an ongoing off-campus conflict involving students, several unauthorized adults trespassed onto our campus. After individuals refused to follow the check-in procedure a Campus Supervisor followed them and immediately alerted administration who called for law enforcement assistance. Moments later, additional adults also entered and refused to follow required check-in procedures. Campus Supervisors intervened but were assaulted by a student and trespassing individuals. Assailants departed. Law enforcement responded quickly thereafter, and we are cooperating fully with their ongoing investigation. We are also working closely with district leadership to review and strengthen our safety procedures to address situations where individuals refuse to follow campus entry protocols. The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. We are grateful to our team for their rapid response and to law enforcement for their support.” The Source Information in this story is from interviews with students and parents of students at Martin Luther King High School in Riverside, a statement from the Riverside Police Department and a letter from the school to family and staff. Everyone Is Happy With the 3 Heroes That Marvel Rivals Nerfed in Season 2.5 Everyone Is Happy With the 3 Heroes That Marvel Rivals Nerfed in Season 2.5 NetEase Games hasn’t been shy with the updates to Marvel Rivals. We’ve gotten multiple different metas since the game came out, and with Ultron joining the game soon, we have new changes for the midseason 2.5 update. The game has been going through a dive meta recently, with duelists terrorizing supports in the backline. While dozens of heroes are receiving tweaks, the spotlight is firmly on three Duelists: Psylocke, Human Torch, and Iron Fist. It’s great to see that NetEase is willing to make these changes. The developers have often prioritized fun over meta, and by fixing the meta, we might go back to having fun again. Marvel Rivals is getting a huge mid-season update For once, the Marvel Rivals community seems unified. While the nerfs to Groot and Captain America were also met with applause, it’s the tuning down of these three Duelists that’s being seen as the most impactful for improving game balance. As Redditor u/Trayth commented, “Very happy to see Cap, Groot, Psylocke, Johnny and Iron Fist nuked” So let’s look at the nerfs. A new Hero Balance update is on the way! With Season 2.5 arriving soon, check out what changes we’re implementing to refine your heroic journey >> [Hidden Content] Our Hero Hot List has also been updated >> [Hidden Content] Maintenance will begin on… pic.twitter.com/ZbiTxZUdEz — Marvel Rivals (@MarvelRivals) May 22, 2025 Although she was rarely banned in lower-tier matches, high-ranking players knew just how dangerous Psylocke could be in the right hands. Her blend of burst damage, stealth, and versatility made her a nightmare for supports, especially during the dive meta we have going on right now. The patch reduces the damage of her Wing Shurikens from 14 to 12 per hit and cuts the Psychic Stealth invisibility duration from 3 seconds to 2. There are small changes at first glance, but it helps with her burst potential and evasiveness, two of her most important qualities. Johnny Storm, aka Human Torch, was a consistent problem across all levels of play. His kit can quickly melt enemies, all while he stays slippery. He often “ran the lobby,” as one Redditor complained. In Season 2.5, Torch’s offensive and defensive abilities will take a hit. SEASON 2.5 FULL PATCH NOTES IN #MarvelRivals Captain America -Adjust base health from 600 to 575. -Increase the delay of shield recovery from 2s to 4s after unleashing Living Legend. -Increase the energy cost of Freedom Charge (Ultimate Ability) from 2800 to 3100. Doctor… pic.twitter.com/hJXK3vwQhe — Marvel Rivals Intel (@RivalsAssembled) May 22, 2025 His Fire Cluster damage has been reduced from 7 to 6 per hit, the charge speed of Blazing Blast is also being increased from 2 to 3 seconds. Additionally, the shield from Flaming Meteor has been nerfed from 75 to 50, with the cooldown extended from 15 to 20 seconds. We’re also getting Ultron alongside these balance changes Lots of new content to enjoy very soon. | Image Credit: NetEase Games Lin Lie, better known as Iron Fist, also took a hit in Season 2.5, much to the relief of many of us in the higher ranks. His tankiness and mobility made him one of the most slippery duelists to deal with. Once again, this is during the dive meta, so he really was a menace for us support mains. The Dragon’s Defense ability now converts less blocked damage into bonus health (1.3 instead of 1.5), and the maximum conversion cap has been reduced from 200 to 175. His Jeet Kune Do cooldown reduction was cut significantly—from 1.5 seconds to 1 second The feedback on these nerfs has been overwhelmingly positive. On top of these changes, we’re also getting Ultron, the newest hero addition to the roster following Emma Frost. There will also be a new map, new team-up abilities, and quality-of-life features. For now, the meta looks a little healthier. Crypto Stocks Edge Upwards as Bitcoin Hits Record High on Pizza Day Crypto Stocks Edge Upwards as Bitcoin Hits Record High on Pizza Day surged to a new all-time high above $111,000 on Bitcoin Pizza Day, driving crypto-related stocks higher in midday trading. Coinbase Global (NASDAQ:), Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ:), and MicroStrategy (NASDAQ:) all posted gains as the cryptocurrency rally sparked renewed institutional interest and placed every Bitcoin holder in profit. Bitcoin Reaches Historic Milestone on Pizza Day Anniversary Today marks a particularly symbolic day for the cryptocurrency community as Bitcoin Pizza Day coincides with the digital asset reaching a new all-time high above $111,000. May 22nd commemorates the day in 2010 when Florida programmer Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 bitcoins for two Papa John’s pizzas in what became the first commercial Bitcoin transaction. At today’s prices, those pizzas would be worth over $1.1 billion. Bitcoin’s rapid ascent has triggered significant market activity, with over $500 million liquidated across crypto derivatives markets in the past 24 hours. More than 120,000 traders lost their positions, with the single largest loss being a $6.36 million BTC/USD position on Bybit. Short positions bore the brunt of the damage, accounting for almost $300 million in losses, while long positions saw approximately $193 million wiped out. Crypto Stocks Rally on Institutional Momentum As of 12:15 PM EST on May 22, 2025, crypto-related stocks are experiencing broad-based gains as investors position themselves for continued institutional adoption of digital assets. Coinbase Global is leading the charge, trading at $268.89, up $9.90 or 3.82% from the previous close. The cryptocurrency exchange’s strong performance reflects growing trading volumes and institutional interest in digital assets. With a market capitalization of $68.4 billion and a forward P/E ratio of 44.64, Coinbase remains well-positioned to capitalize on increased crypto adoption. The stock has gained 8.22% year-to-date and 16.07% over the past year, significantly outperforming broader market indices. Robinhood Markets is also participating in the rally, up $0.95 or 1.48% to $64.81. The commission-free trading platform has become increasingly popular among retail investors for crypto trading, with analysts comparing Robinhood Gold to “Amazon (NASDAQ:) Prime of e-brokers.” The stock has delivered impressive returns with a 73.94% gain year-to-date and a remarkable 229.65% advance over the past year, demonstrating strong momentum in the retail crypto trading space. MicroStrategy, often considered a Bitcoin proxy stock due to its substantial cryptocurrency holdings, gained $9.60 or 2.38% to $412.29. The business intelligence company has transformed itself into a de facto Bitcoin ETF through its aggressive accumulation strategy. Despite facing some regulatory scrutiny and class action lawsuits related to its Bitcoin strategy, MSTR continues to attract investors seeking leveraged exposure to Bitcoin’s price movements. The stock has gained 42.36% year-to-date and an impressive 150.33% over the past year. The broader crypto ecosystem is benefiting from what appears to be renewed institutional confidence. Standard Chartered recently reiterated its $500,000 Bitcoin price target, citing a “wider range of institutional buyers” entering the market. This institutional interest, combined with the symbolic significance of Bitcoin Pizza Day reaching new price heights, has created a compelling narrative for crypto investors. *** Neither the author, Tim Fries, nor this website, The Tokenist, provide financial advice. Village mob kills Royal Bengal tiger in India’s north east Village mob kills Royal Bengal tiger in India’s north east A Royal Bengal tiger was killed and dismembered by a mob in India’s north eastern state of Assam, a forest official has said. Angry residents from a village in the Golaghat district reportedly took the step because the tiger had killed livestock in the area and posed a threat to their lives. The state’s forest department has registered a case. Instances of man-animal conflict are not new to Assam. This is the third tiger killing that has been reported this year. Top forest official Gunadeep Das told Times of India newspaper that the tiger had died from sharp wounds and not gunshots. The carcass was later recovered in the presence of a magistrate, reports say. Mr Das told a local newspaper that “around a thousand people had gathered to kill the tiger” and that some of them attacked the tiger with machetes. He added that the tiger’s carcass had been sent for an autopsy. Mrinal Saikia, a lawmaker from Assam state condemned the killing on X. He shared a video that showed the purported dead body of the tiger with parts of its skin, face and legs missing. The BBC has not independently verified the video. “This is a very painful act. The Earth is not only for humans, it is for animals as well,” he said in the post, adding that strict action will be taken against those involved in the killing. Another forest official, Sonali Ghosh told local media that the origins of the tiger were unclear. According to reports, the animal was killed about 20km (12 miles) away from the Kaziranga National Park. Latest data by Assam’s forest department shows the population of tigers in the state has steadily increased from just 70 in 2006 to 190 in 2019 due to various conservation efforts. However, instances of tigers being killed due to conflict with villagers have been often reported in the media, which could be because of shrinking habitat and lack of protection of tiger corridors between different national parks in the state. Tigers are a protected species under India’s Wildlife Protection Act (1972), which prohibits poaching, hunting and trade of tiger parts. Turbulence for Joby Shares: What’s Behind the Recent Dip?
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Turbulence for Joby Shares: What’s Behind the Recent Dip? Turbulence for Joby Shares: What’s Behind the Recent Dip? Joby Aviation (NYSE:) stock has seen more than average volatility recently, and the movement has captured investor attention. The eVTOL company’s shares have fallen almost 9% in the last five trading days and have generally traded near their 50-day low for a while now. This negative stock performance follows news of CEO Joeben Bevirt’s recent share *****, which was perceived as large by market participants. Additionally, broader uncertainty in the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) sector, possibly worsened by negative news about competitors, may be impacting investor sentiment. Recent price drops in Joby’s stock price raise a critical question for investors: do company-specific fundamental weaknesses drive these declines, or are they primarily a result of broader market concerns and insider activity, thus presenting a potential investment opportunity? Understanding Joby’s Recent CEO Share ***** Joby Aviation CEO Joeben Bevirt’s ***** of 101,652 shares on May 14 at an average of $6.66, generating roughly $677,000, has garnered investor attention. While insider sales by CEOs can cause concern, this transaction involved only 0.17% of Bevirt’s total Joby Aviation holdings. He still retains over 60.5 million shares, valued at around $403 million at the time of the *****, indicating a substantial ongoing financial stake in the company’s long-term success. Executive compensation in growth-focused technology and aerospace firms often heavily relies on equity. In 2023, stock awards represented about 85% of Bevirt’s total compensation. Consequently, periodic stock sales by executives usually reflect personal financial management needs, such as covering tax obligations from vested stock or options, diversifying their portfolios, or accessing liquidity for personal investments. Considering the small proportion of shares sold and typical compensation structures for founder-CEOs in this industry, Bevirt’s recent transaction likely reflects routine financial planning rather than a negative view of Joby Aviation’s future. The Archer Effect? Assessing Joby’s Resilience The urban air mobility sector is vulnerable to sentiment shifts driven by news from key players. Negative attention on Archer Aviation NYSE: ACHR due to a short-seller report alleging milestone misrepresentation could create a contagion effect, causing investors to apply concerns to the entire eVTOL industry broadly. For Joby Aviation investors, it’s important to distinguish between this sector-wide sentiment and Joby’s specific progress and fundamentals. The allegations against Archer are company-specific, with no similar indications for Joby. Joby has demonstrated tangible achievements, including over 40,000 test flight miles, routine piloted full transition flights (which were documented in detail on the company’s social media outlets), and steady FAA certification progress (43% on FAA side, 62% on Joby side as of May 5th), and simultaneous flights of two aircraft. Another negative dragging Joby’s stock price down is the Morgan Stanley NYSE: MS downgrade in April, citing broader aerospace concerns like tariffs and supply chain issues, which contributed to sector-wide caution. While Morgan Stanley’s analyst had valid long-term concerns, the immediate impact on Joby, in its pre-mass-production stage, is likely less significant than for established aerospace manufacturers. Consequently, while increased sector scrutiny is expected, discerning investors should focus on Joby’s individual performance and unique strengths. Is Joby’s Current Price a Buying Opportunity? Despite the recent dip in Joby Aviation’s stock price, a strong long-term investment case can be made. This decline could be a strategic entry point or accumulation point for investors. The market’s negative sentiment seems to be overreacting to CEO share sales and competitor problems that don’t necessarily reflect issues within Joby itself. Joby continues to make substantial, verifiable progress in the execution of its development strategy, and most Wall Street analysts remain optimistic, predicting significant price appreciation. While pre-revenue eVTOL sector risks like profitability timelines and regulation exist, Joby’s progress and strategy are solid. For investors who can distinguish between market fluctuations, sector-wide concerns, and Joby’s execution, the stock’s recent drop to near technical support levels presents an attractive opportunity to invest in a potential urban air mobility leader. Upcoming milestones, such as FAA TIA progress and Dubai aircraft delivery and operations, could improve market sentiment and reward entering investors for their investment bravery. Seeing Joby Aviation Through the Noise While the stock chart for Joby Aviation may reflect recent turbulence, a deeper look reveals a company consistently achieving critical operational and technical milestones on its path to commercializing urban air mobility. When viewed against substantial remaining holdings and common executive financial practices, the context surrounding recent CEO share sales appears less alarming than initial headlines might suggest. Similarly, sector-wide sentiment shifts stemming from competitor issues should be carefully distinguished from Joby’s demonstrable progress and strong partner validations. With a majority of analysts maintaining a positive outlook and significant price target upside, and with tangible progress towards key commercialization goals, Joby Aviation’s current stock price warrants careful consideration by investors focused on the long-term transformative potential of the UAM sector. U.S. Treasury yields might rise on Trump tax bill U.S. Treasury yields might rise on Trump tax bill Congressional lawmakers at a mark up meeting with the House Budget Committee on Capitol Hill on May 16, 2025 in Washington, DC, U.S. Anna Moneymaker | Getty Images News | Getty Images U.S President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful” tax bill was passed by the House of Representatives Thursday and is headed to the Senate for approval. If the bill clears that hurdle and becomes law, it “reduces taxes for lots of people, it increases spending, especially on defense,” said Jed Ellerbroek, portfolio manager at Argent Capital Management, in an interview with CNBC. Simply put, it will boost the economy in the short term, Ellerbroek added. Further into the future, however, the bill will likely saddle America with a higher fiscal deficit. Tax cuts mean lower revenue, while increased spending on defense means more money flows out of government coffers. It’s a matter of simple arithmetic: less income and more expenses. Even though yields on U.S. Treasurys, which are essentially government debt, have moderated slightly from their Wednesday spike, they’re still at elevated levels compared with earlier in the year. This suggests investors are not as certain about lending money to the White House, and hence are demanding more safety in the form of higher yields. Over in the stock market, investors are taking a wait-and-see approach, with both the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average remaining mostly unchanged after Trump’s bill was passed. There’s at least one piece of good news from Thursday. The U.S. Supreme Court strongly suggested that Federal Reserve members might have protections from being dismissed by a president, lowering the risk of another Trump administration-induced market meltdown. What you need to know today U.S. stocks mostly unchangedOn Thursday, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average closed mostly flat, while the Nasdaq Composite added 0.28%, as the U.S. House of Representatives passed Trump’s tax bill. Asia-Pacific markets mostly rose Friday. Japan’s Nikkei 225 added 0.6% as at 2 p.m. Singapore time amid news that the country’s core inflation — which excludes fresh food prices — heated up more than expected to 3.5% in April, the highest level since January 2023. Treasury yields eased slightlyOvernight stateside, the 30-year U.S. Treasury yield dipped to 5.044% after touching 5.161% — the highest since October 2023 — and the 10-year yield fell to 4.535%, dropping nearly 10 basis points from earlier in the day. The sell-off in Treasurys is prompting some market watchers to rethink the status of American government bonds as a safe haven and rotate their money to other global assets. Fed members might have protection from dismissalThe U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday strongly suggested that Federal Reserve board members would have special protection against being fired by a president. “The Federal Reserve is a uniquely structured, quasi-private entity that follows in the distinct historical tradition of the First and Second Banks of the United States,” the majority ruling said in a court case on Trump’s firing of federal agency members. China and U.S. hold first call since GenevaThe U.S. and China have agreed to maintain communication following a call between ******** Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, according to a brief readout released by the ******** Foreign Ministry on Friday. While the call may not indicate a breakthrough in trade talks, it is a “positive sign” that Beijing now knows who to talk to on the U.S. side, said Dan Wang, China director at political risk consultancy Eurasia Group. Anthropic launches new AI modelsAnthropic, the Amazon-backed OpenAI rival, on Thursday launched Claude 4, its latest artificial intelligence models. The company said in a release that the two models, called Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4, are defining a “new standard” when it comes to AI agents. Claude Opus 4 is the “best coding model in the world” and can autonomously work for nearly a full seven-hour corporate workday, according to Anthropic. [PRO] A warning sign from the equity marketMarkets stabilized Thursday after the dual sell-off in stocks and bonds, but a key corner of the equity market is blinking a caution light on the economy, wrote CNBC PRO’s Jesse Pound. Philoxenia: The Ancient Roots of Greek Hospitality Philoxenia: The Ancient Roots of Greek Hospitality The story of Baucis and Philemon – a pair of hospitable elders who were saved by Zeus and Hermes. Credit: Wikipedia/Public domain. The Greek word Philoxenia, literally translated as a “friend to a stranger,” is widely perceived to be synonymous to hospitality. For Greeks, however, it is much deeper than that. It is an unspoken cultural law that expresses generosity and courtesy to strangers. Greeks are enormously generous when inviting others to their home or being invited themselves. In villages, it is not uncommon for villagers to show up at the door of a resident foreigner (or even a temporary visitor renting a room) with a sack full of fresh tomatoes, or even a bottle of local olive oil. Philoxenia today can be as simple as a smile, helping a stranded motorist, buying a meal for a homeless person, or opening your home to friends and family. Zeus Xenios This cultural law has its origins in Ancient Greece. The Ancient Greek god Zeus is sometimes called Zeus Xenios, as he was also a protector of travelers. He thus embodied the religious obligation to be hospitable to travelers. The beautiful story written by the Roman poet Ovid in 8 A.D of Zeus and Hermes disguised as poor travelers, narrates the sacred relation between host and guest, embodying the ancient Greek tradition. The two ancient Greek Gods, the story goes, visited many villages in search of refuge for the night. A poor elderly couple, Baucis and Philemon, welcomed them as guests in their home and generously served them food and wine. After refilling her guests’ cups many times over, Baucis noticed that the wine jug was still full. Philemon then realized the visitors were actually gods, and she offered to kill their only goose to feed them. Touched by this gesture, Zeus rewarded their generosity by transforming the humble cottage into a beautiful stone temple. Zeus also granted the couple their ultimate wish, namely to be the guardians of the temple, to die at the same time, and stay together for eternity, as they were turned into trees guarding each side of the temple’s door. ******* War According to legend, even an event as momentous as the ******* War began because of a guest’s violation of xenia. The ******* prince Paris was a guest of King Menelaus of Sparta when he abducted Menelaus’ wife, Helen. Both the Odyssey and the Iliad are filled with episodes in which xenia is either honored or ignored and the subsequent consequences are notable. For instance, when Odysseus sails to the island of the cyclops, the monster’s treatment of Odysseus and his sailors is a violation of the custom of xenia. The cyclops is punished for the transgression. Odysseus blinds his “host” and escapes. The cyclops episode depicts an abuse of xenia. Odysseus in Polyphemus Cave, The Odyssey. Credit: Wikipedia/Public domain. In another story, Odysseus’ wife, Penelope, is forced by custom to entertain an entire household of suitors. The guests not only make unreasonable, burdensome requests that were impolite for guests but they do so with the assumption the host himself is no longer alive. The conclusion of the poem involves Odysseus’s slaughter of the suitors. This violent ending can be seen as retribution for an egregious abuse of xenia, or conversely, a violation of its very precepts. Reasons for philoxenia There are many possible reasons why hospitality (philoxenia) was more prevalent in those times. Traveling in Homer’s time was much more extensive and lengthier than in modern times. Because of this, many more nights were spent away from home in many different locations. Also, there were no hotels or inns where travelers could pay and stay the night. Because of this, travelers had to rely on the hospitality of others for shelter, food, and protection. There was, however, some payment for this hospitality in the form of a gift exchange. Another possible reason for this hospitality was the fact that there were no nations that would allow travelers to enter their territory safely. Without such hospitality, strangers could be captured or even killed for entering a foreign land. Furthermore, Greek hospitality may have been vital because Greeks believed the gods wanted them to show hospitality to anyone who showed up at their homes. It was believed that turning away someone and not providing them this hospitality would result in some form of punishment from the gods. Finally, Greek hospitality could have been key in spreading one’s name and bringing fame if a high standard of hospitality was provided to strangers. It might have even been a portrayal of wealth. DR Congo senate strips ex-president of immunity over treason charges DR Congo senate strips ex-president of immunity over treason charges The Democratic Republic of Congo’s senate has stripped former President Joseph Kabila of his immunity, paving the way for his prosecution over his alleged backing of rebels in the east. Authorities have accused him of treason and war crimes, saying there was a “substantial body of documents, testimony and material facts” linking Kabila to the M23 armed group, which has taken control of several towns in the mineral-rich east. Kabila, 53, has not commented on the accusations but has in the past denied any connection with the insurgents. Nearly 90 senators on Thursday voted in favour of his treason prosecution, while five opposed it. “The senate authorises the prosecution and lifting of Joseph Kabila’s immunity,” declared senate Speaker Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde after Thursday’s vote. The former president, who led the country between 2001 and 2019, did not appear before the senate to defend himself. After stepping down, he was given the title of “senator for life”, which gives him legal immunity. In order to pursue the charges against him, DR Congo’s military prosecutor had asked the senate to lift this privilege. Kabila has been living outside the country, in South Africa, for the past two years. But at the beginning of last month he said he would be returning to help find a solution to the conflict in the east. A few weeks later, there were reports that the former president had come back and was in Goma, one of the cities captured by the M23. But these were denied by his political party, the People’s Party for Reconstruction and Democracy (PPRD). Last month, the authorities banned the PPRD because of its “ambiguous attitude” to the occupation of Congolese territory by the M23. Ordering the seizure of Kabila’s assets, Justice Minister Mutamba said the former president should return to the country and “face justice… and present his defence”. Analysts say any trial of Kabila could further destabilise the country, which has been battling the M23 rebellion since 2012. Kabila’s party termed his prosecution “pure theatre” aimed at distracting Congolese people from the main challenges facing the country, AFP news agency reported. Unlikely potential hero ready to save Victory’s season Unlikely potential hero ready to save Victory’s season Jack Duncan knew he was joining Melbourne Victory as a back-up goalkeeper. A journeyman who spent most of his career at Newcastle between stints overseas, the 32-year-old didn’t play a game as Alex Paulsen’s deputy at Wellington last year. But on Saturday Duncan and Paulsen, on loan at Auckland FC from Bournemouth, will start at different ends of the pitch. “It’s been a strange season for myself, being in and out of the team, but I think when I’ve been in, I’ve played well and performed well,” Duncan said. “It’s been a good season in that aspect; loved every minute of it.” Duncan played the first 13 matches of the A-League Men season, knowing former Socceroo Mitch Langerak was arriving in January. But he was always ready, and after Langerak suffered a foot injury, Duncan has played the past four games. “When I signed, I knew the situation with Mitch coming in in January – that was clear to me,” he said. “I thought, at the start of the season, just to give myself the best opportunity to make the coaches’ decision as hard as possible.” Duncan was benched midway through January, but got back to work. “I was disappointed, as all footballers would be in that situation, but I just tried to keep my head down, working hard, be a good teammate, be good around the dressing room, and play my role in that aspect,” he said. “Because you never know when the opportunity is going to come again – like it has. “Hopefully I can contribute moving forward (this) week and hopefully in the grand final.” Duncan is ready to step up in front of a hostile Auckland crowd as Victory attempt to overturn a 1-0 deficit in Saturday’s semi-final second leg at Go Media Stadium. “It was pretty hostile (against Western Sydney) as well, but we went there and we got a really good result, so that gives us full confidence to go over to Auckland,” he said. “We’ll be right up for it.” Victory coach Arthur Diles never doubted Duncan could step up. “He’s an incredible human being, first and foremost,” he said. “As a goalkeeper, he’s very talented. He’s had a great year for us, he really has. “Even the times where he wasn’t playing, he’s made Mitch a better keeper as well, and he’s pushed him along day to day. You can’t ask for any more than that. “It’s just nice to see him doing really well, and nice to see him playing at the level we knew he could play when we signed him. “We believed in him from day one.” Source link #potential #hero #ready #save #Victorys #season Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

The curious case of Biden’s missed ******* diagnosis The curious case of Biden’s missed ******* diagnosis The final chapter of Joe Biden’s five-decade political career has been mired in questions about his clearly ailing health, and who knew what when. Now, a new puzzle has emerged: why was the president of the United States – one of the most medically scrutinised people on earth – not tested for prostate ******* once in over a decade? Was it, as his team insists, a routine omission for a man of his age, or was it something more calculated? What we do know is that Biden’s ******* was reportedly detected so late that it is now aggressive. According to medical specialists, the cells have a disordered appearance with a Gleason score (which analyses how likely they are to advance) of nine out of 10. It is also classed as stage four because the ******* has mutated from his prostate to his bones. At this point, it can only be controlled, not cured. That it is serious is beyond doubt, but what is more complicated is the question of how this happened. On one side, we have Biden’s aides, who told The New York Times that doctors stopped analysing his PSA (prostate-specific antigens) in 2014 in line with US regulations, which suggest that men over 70 do not need routine testing. This is because an elevated PSA is so common that testing can lead to unnecessary treatment, which often causes more damage that it solves. Still, presidents are subject to more rigorous and more personalised medical care than the rest of us, and Donald Trump (despite having no evidence) has suggested that this was a cover-up. Trump, who is 78 to Biden’s 82, is still being tested for prostate ******* and has released his (relatively low) PSA results numerous times. Barack Obama and George W Bush both regularly published their PSA scores while in office. There are a number of flaws in Biden’s argument – namely that 71 seems young for a man in high public office to stop all testing. “We do not recommend routine screening for men after age 75 or in men with life expectancy of less than 10 years because the benefits of detecting a prostate ******* and treating it for curative intent are not realised in that short time *******,” says Behfar Ehdaie, a urologic specialist at Memorial Sloan Kettering ******* Centre in New York. “However, patients are still seen regularly and questions are asked about prostate health after age 75.” Urological surgeon Declan Cahill, who is based at the London Bridge Hospital, believes 70 or even 75 is an increasingly arbitrary age, as men are living longer than ever. “I would have thought it was particularly inappropriate not to test a man as medicalised as Biden, who would also have had a life expectancy beyond the mean – he is lean, he doesn’t smoke, he is fit – and was very well taken care of. There’s never any point in not knowing – knowledge is everything, so long as it is responsibly managed.” A senior surgeon weighs in, adding, “To take a blood test from a man over 50 and not do a PSA is practically an assault. It is the most male-specific health-related blood test you can do. If you get an abnormal result, then you do a scan (I imagine the White House has an MRI scanner) and then after that you do a biopsy. It is not as if we throw drugs at anyone with a high PSA, but I simply cannot envision a world where nobody at the White House ever ticked yes to a PSA test for him.” This then raises the question of whether they deliberately failed to screen him – particularly in light of new tests now available that are far more accurate than the PSA. Bartu Ahiska, the senior director at Oxford Bionynamics, explains that one of the problems with the PSA is that it is not accurate enough to distinguish between the prostate ******* that needs urgent treatment and the more indolent versions of the disease that do not. Their Epi Switch PSE blood test cuts false positives from about 75 per cent to under 10 per cent, and has been available in the US and *** for two years. Then there is the fact that new forms of treatment are far less invasive than they once were, with some carrying almost no side effects – negating the argument that it is not worth testing for. “If it is localised, prostate ******* is curable with a number of approaches which – yes – include surgery and radiotherapy, but there is also an emerging technique called focal therapy,” says Dr Rakesh Heer, the chair of urology at Imperial College London. “High frequency ultrasounds or cryotherapy, or irreversible electroporation, destroy the ******* but leave the prostate intact, so avoid the side effects which include incontinence and erectile dysfunction.” This only works in cases that are caught early. Hormone treatment is usually the first line of defence for anyone diagnosed with slightly more advanced prostate *******. Notably, one of the side effects can be cognitive decline. “Androgen deprivation therapy, or ADT, blocks production of testosterone and this causes a number of side effects,” says Cahill. “Cognitive decline is one – it is not usually that common to be glaringly obvious, but a lot of relatives will notice that the man in question’s short term memory is really failing or that he has become really forgetful.” Biden’s history of covering up health problems means that this most recent revelation has led to a media storm in the US. Many Democrats blame Trump’s 2024 victory on Biden’s lack of transparency around his health, his clear cognitive decline during the second half of his presidency and his late withdrawal from the 2024 election. This news also comes the same week that Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again, written by authors and journalists Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson, is released. The book alleges that, “Biden’s physical deterioration – most apparent in his halting walk – had become so severe that there were internal discussions about putting the president in a wheelchair, but they couldn’t do so until after the election. “Given Biden’s age, [his physician Kevin O’Connor] also privately said that if he had another bad fall, a wheelchair might be necessary for what could be a difficult recovery,” the book adds. According to Tapper and Thompson, aides tried to ensure he never walked long distances and used handrails when climbing stairs. Biden’s former physician, Kevin O’Connor, is alleged to have said that Biden may need a wheelchair if he suffered ‘another bad fall’ – Shutterstock At the time, the press were repeatedly told that his altered gait was because of a fracture he suffered in 2020 and the fact he failed to wear his prescribed surgical boot. His mental decline was arguably more disturbing. According to Tapper and Thompson, Biden failed to recognise George Clooney at a California fundraiser last June, reportedly saying, “Thank you for being there,” to the film star. Not long after, Clooney wrote an opinion piece suggesting he withdraw his candidacy. None of this interaction was made public. A spokesperson for Biden says, “evidence of ageing is not evidence of mental incapacity”, arguing that he had been a “very effective President”. However, Thompson and Tapper allege that, as well as taking far too long to come forward with his health problems and thereby possibly costing the Democrats the election, Biden hid information about the ******* diagnosis of his late son, Beau Biden, who was an elected official at the time. The authors argue that this demonstrates “the Bidens’ capacity for denial and the lengths they would go to avoid transparency about health issues”. A senior Republican source agrees, saying: “It was clear to anyone who was watching the President that he had declined cognitively and physically. The White House and the media condemned concerns about his health as political attacks, so it would not be surprising if they also lied about more serious health issues he had.” Source link #curious #case #Bidens #missed #******* #diagnosis Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Super Micro Computer Stock Clears New Path Higher on Saudi Orders Super Micro Computer Stock Clears New Path Higher on Saudi Orders Within the technology sector, a list of names has become hot and popular over the past two years, for good and bad reasons. When it comes to shares of Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:), investors have been whipsawed by waves of repeated uncertainty and volatility for different reasons, though it looks like this company’s future path (and its stock price) might be cleared for new highs coming up. Most investors will still feel the aftereffects of the legal allegations made against Super Micro Computer stock, when the main bearish case was centered around the belief that the company was sort of “cooking” the books, and misguiding investors as to how much money the business was making. Things went as far as the stock selling off due to financial filing delays and a change in the auditing and accounting team. While management took the right step, the bears weren’t that willing to give up on their belief that Super Micro Computer might be in danger after all. The price action that followed (a decent-sized rally) was a warning for what was to come next for these bears, though the final blow ended up coming in mid-May 2025 after President Trump had a visit with the Saudi government. A Major Catalyst Just Hit Super Micro Computer After this visit and talks on trade and new Saudi government investment in United States companies, one major headline broke out to push Super Micro Computer’s name back to the table and consider the optimistic future this stock could deliver in the coming months. The release concerns a new collaboration between Super Micro Computer and the Saudi government to develop hyperscale artificial intelligence campuses across the region. Specifically, Super Micro Computer has partnered with DataVolt to support the development of the needed infrastructure through data centers. Understanding the amount of secular growth that the Saudi region can (and probably will) experience in the coming years, being one of the first names to hit the ground running in this new cycle will prove to be a bullish catalyst for stock valuations during this time. More than that, this Saudi decision might put some of these bearish views to rest once and for all. With this new partnership in place, investors can safely assume that Super Micro Computer’s equipment and services are actually in a leading position in the industry and are being accepted or adopted by more notable customers. What the Market Thought of the Deal On an initial view, investors can consider the price action for Super Micro Computer and what this new announcement means for the future. Over the past month, the stock rallied by 41.1% to outperform the broader S&P 500 index and the rest of the technology sector. Considering this reaction, investors can think of this new announcement as a significant catalyst that is now pricing in future earnings growth and therefore higher ceilings for the stock price. Price action is nothing but a mechanism of consensus, and this consensus is usually focused on the next three to six months of financial outcomes, showing the bull case for the company. Now, this is where the landscape in Super Micro Computer gets interesting for investors today. All of these financial scenarios for future growth have likely not yet been modeled and recognized by Wall Street analysts, which creates the potential for a new catalyst to occur in two ways. The first is earnings per share (EPS) forecasts made by these analysts, which currently sit at $0.94 per share for the fourth quarter of 2025, though that might eventually get pushed higher once the outcome of this new partnership is accounted for. The second way investors could see a new catalyst down the road is in price targets. While today’s consensus price target is only $45.6 per share, implying that Super Micro Computer could rally by an additional 9.5% from where it trades today, investors must remember that these valuations were set before the new Saudi partnership. Once these benefits are incorporated into financial statements and valuation models, investors will likely see some analysts come in with more realistic (and probably higher) price targets, initiating a new wave of buyers as well. However, it seems that some of these buyers have already jumped the gun. Those from UBS Asset Management decided to boost their Super Micro Computer stock holdings by 2.7% just days after the company made the Saudi partnership announcement, bringing their stake to $99 million today and giving investors another sign of confidence to lean on. Chief Executive Women boss Lisa Annese warns against giving Donald Trump’s diversity war too much air time Chief Executive Women boss Lisa Annese warns against giving Donald Trump’s diversity war too much air time The freshly-minted boss of Chief Executive Women has cautioned against giving too much air time to Donald Trump’s war on diversity and inclusion policies. Lisa Annese took the CEO role at one of nation’s most powerful female lobby groups in January, two months after Mr Trump won the presidential election in a political resurrection that sent shockwaves though the US and around the world. On his first day back at the White House, Mr Trump scrapped Federal diversity, equity and inclusion programs to prevent discrimination based on gender or ******* orientation. “It’s important not to talk it into existence (in Australia) just because it’s a conversation in the US,” Ms Annese told The West *********** ahead of CEW’s annual dinner in Perth this week. “After the election of Trump . . . he was very public about rolling back on what they call diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the US and so people were reacting to that thinking, ‘Oh well if that’s being discussed, maybe we should preemptively roll back or preemptively re-examine what our approach is’. “We’ve got buckets of evidence around why diversity and inclusion is good for business. Let’s not panic and let’s not just assume because some one person, or a few people, think that this is all about political correctness that that’s actually true, because it’s not.” Walmart, McDonald’s and Facebook owner Meta are among the major US companies that have proactively scaled back their DEI initiatives to comply with Mr Trump’s crackdown. Ms Annese notes that “we never really did DEI in Australia, it’s a very American thing”. “What diversity and inclusion has meant in Australia is around how do we make sure that our processes, the way we develop talent and the way we support people into leadership draws on 100 per cent of the talent pool, not just 50 per cent of the talent pool,” she said. “Whilst I’ve always supported organisations having targets to achieve these things, we don’t have a lot of the affirmative action of the US and so it’s a different thing here.” She reckons *********** businesses remain committed to the equality fight. “I actually don’t believe anyone has changed their position,” Ms Annese said. “Whilst there’s always resistance whenever you try and create change . . . I just haven’t seen enough evidence in Australia that en masse, organisations are rolling back on (diversity and inclusion).” Ms Annese started the CEW role on January 6. Most recently, she was the CEO of Diversity Council of Australia, where was responsible for growing its membership to 1400 organisations. Prior to that, Ms Annese worked as a diversity practitioner at law firm Corrs Chambers Westgarth and at the Workplace Gender Equality Agency. “I feel really confident in being able to defend the work of the gender equality movement because I know it’s good for business and it’s good for people,” Ms Annese said. Calif. Police Officer Allegedly Caught Partying at Stagecoach and at Disneyland While Collecting $600k in Workers’ Compensation Calif. Police Officer Allegedly Caught Partying at Stagecoach and at Disneyland While Collecting $600k in Workers’ Compensation Former Westminster Police Department officer Nicole Brown is facing 15 felony charges for alleged workers’ compensation insurance fraud Brown was injured while on the job in 2022 and took disability amounting to $600,000, according to the Office of the District Attorney of Orange County While on disability, Brown allegedly attended the Stagecoach Music Festival in addition to other activities like visiting Disneyland, skiing, running 5Ks and more A California police officer is facing 15 felony charges and up to 22 years in prison after being accused of alleged workers’ compensation insurance fraud and stealing more than $600k from taxpayers. Nicole Brown, formerly of the Westminster Police Department, suffered a head injury in 2022 while attempting to handcuff a suspect and was later placed on disability. According to a May 20 press release from the Office of the District Attorney of Orange County, Brown, 39, “complained to her watch commander that she had a headache and was feeling dizzy, but an emergency room doctor who examined her that same day released her back to work without restrictions.” Several days after the incident, Brown called in sick to work multiple days in a row and was later diagnosed with severe concussion syndrome and was placed on Total Temporary Disability, according to the release. Officers who receive a job-related injury are entitled to their full salary for up to a year in addition to any medical fees. The district attorney’s office claims that Brown cost Westminster more than $600,000 in tax payer money during her time on disability. While on her disability, Brown complained of “headaches, dizziness, sensitivity to light and noise, problems processing thoughts and words and an inability to work on the computer or do any screentime,” the release claims. However, an investigation alleged that while on disability, Brown was witnessed drinking and partying at the Stagecoach Music Festival in April 2023, despite the loud, crowded environment with temperatures over 100 degrees. She was also alleged to have gone to Disneyland, attended three AYSO soccer conferences, went snowboarding or skiing in Big Bear and Mammoth, ran two 5k races, played golf, took online courses with a university and attended baseball games. Scott Dudelson/Getty The Stagecoach Music Festival in 2025 Brown’s stepfather Peter Schuman, who is a licensed attorney in California, has also been charged after being accused of aiding her in committing fraud by advocating on her behalf during a meeting to discuss what police duties she could perform. The meeting took place three days after the Stagecoach Music Festival. During the meeting, Brown allegedly “claimed she was unable to look at the screen” and was “sitting in a dark room” with Schuman speaking on her behalf, the release adds. Schuman, 57, has been charged with one felony count of making a fraudulent insurance benefit claim and one felony count of assisting, abetting, conspiring with and soliciting a person in unlawful act. Schuman is facing a maximum sentence of eight years in prison and could “suffer discipline by the State Bar of California,” according to the district attorney. Brown has been charged with nine felony counts of making a fraudulent statement to obtain compensation, six felony counts of making a fraudulent insurance benefit claim and one felony enhancement of committing an aggravated white collar crime over $100,000. If convicted on all counts, Brown could face up to 22 years in prison. The district attorney’s office tells PEOPLE Brown is due back in court July 9. Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Prior to her leave, Brown served as a Homeless Liaison Officer in Westminster. “I just don’t think that anyone is hopeless,” Brown told the site Behind the Badge in 2020. “This is not the prettiest job, dealing with the homeless. You might get someone off the streets and they might go back to the streets and it’s that cycle. But to actually be able to make an impact on someone’s life for the better is why I wanted this position.” At the time, Brown’s partner Roland Perez said of her, “She has compassion. She is all about notes. Everything is organized. She keeps me focused.” Read the original article on People Source link #Calif #Police #Officer #Allegedly #Caught #Partying #Stagecoach #Disneyland #Collecting #600k #Workers #Compensation Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
