Nuclear stocks rally on report Trump to sign orders to support industry Nuclear stocks rally on report Trump to sign orders to support industry Cooling towers are seen at the nuclear-powered Vogtle Electric Generating Plant in Waynesboro, Georgia, U.S. Aug. 13, 2024. Megan Varner | Reuters Nuclear power stocks surged Friday on a report that President Donald Trump will sign executive orders to speed the construction of reactors and secure key materials for the industry. Advanced reactor companies Oklo and NuScale jumped about 8% premarket. Constellation Energy, the largest nuclear operator in the U.S., was up 2%. Cameco Corp., one of the biggest uranium miners in the world, rose more than 4%. Trump could sign the orders as early as Friday, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. The president is scheduled to sign orders in the Oval Office at 1 p.m. ET, according to the White House schedule. Trump will invoke the Defense Production Act to declare a national emergency due to U.S. dependence on Russia and China for enriched uranium, nuclear fuel processing and inputs for advance reactors, according to a draft summary viewed by Reuters. The president is also expected to direct federal agencies to permit and site new nuclear facilities, according to Reuters. He will also order the Departments of Energy and Defense to identify federal land and facilities where nuclear can be deployed and streamline the process to build them, Reuters reported. The criticism, echoing similar remarks from Foreign Minister Gideon Saar on Thursday, was part of a fightback by the Israeli government against the increasingly heavy international pressure on it over the conflict in Gaza. “You’re on the wrong side of humanity and you’re on the wrong side of history,” Netanyahu said. As the flow of images of destruction and hunger in Gaza has continued, fueling protests in countries across the world, Israel has struggled to turn world opinion, which has increasingly shifted against it. “It’s hard to convince at least some people, definitely on the far left in the U.S. and in some countries in Europe, that what Israel is doing is a war of defense,” said former Israeli diplomat Yaki Dayan. Hand drawn and featuring unique interactive mechanics, Other Tales Interactive’s collection of short narrative games asks the player to look back on difficult childhood memories, each blanketed by a layer of magical thinking. It’s hard to call a game that confronts such sensitive themes “fun,” necessarily. Therapeutic, trancelike – those are more fitting descriptors. Playing through each of the four vignettes feels a lot like stepping back in time, into shoes far smaller than mine, adopting a perspective on the world that paints over all its cruelties with an unbridled imagination. Miniatures is both cozy and troubling in that regard – albeit deeply cathartic. Source link #Game #Shown #Todays #Indie #Showcase Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Drugs like Ozempic may lower ******* risk if you have diabetes: study – National Drugs like Ozempic may lower ******* risk if you have diabetes: study – National Excess body weight can raise the risk of certain cancers, leading researchers to wonder whether blockbuster drugs like Wegovy, Ozempic and Zepbound could play a role in ******* prevention. Now, a study of 170,000 patient records suggests there’s a slightly lower risk of obesity-related cancers in U.S. adults with diabetes who took these popular medications compared to those who took another class of diabetes drug not associated with weight loss. This type of study can’t prove cause and effect, but the findings hint at a connection worth exploring. More than a dozen cancers are associated with obesity. “This is a call to scientists and clinical investigators to do more work in this area to really prove or disprove this,” said Dr. Ernest Hawk of MD Anderson ******* Center in Houston, who was not involved in the study. The findings were released Thursday by the American Society of Clinical Oncology and will be discussed at its annual meeting in Chicago. The study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, was led by Lucas Mavromatis, a medical student at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine. Story continues below advertisement 1:54 GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy reduce Alzheimer’s risk for those with diabetes “Chronic disease and chronic disease prevention are some of my passions,” said Mavromatis, a former research fellow with an NIH training program. GLP-1 receptor agonists are injections used to treat diabetes, and some are also approved to treat obesity. They work by mimicking hormones in the gut and the brain to regulate appetite and feelings of fullness. They don’t work for everyone and can produce side effects that include nausea and stomach pain. In the study, researchers analyzed data from 43 U.S. health systems to compare two groups: people with obesity and diabetes who took GLP-1 drugs and other people with the same conditions who took diabetes drugs like sitagliptin. The two groups were equal in size and matched for other characteristics. After four years, those who took GLP-1 drugs had a 7% lower risk of developing an obesity-related ******* and an 8% lower risk of death from any cause compared to those who took the other type of diabetes drug. There were 2,501 new cases of obesity-related ******* in the GLP-1 group compared to 2,671 cases in the other group. 8. New Steam Deck Update Adds Battery Saver And More New Steam Deck Update Adds Battery Saver And More The latest update for SteamOS is here, after months of development in beta. SteamOS Version 3.7.8 includes a lot of fixes and improvements on a system level, and will also introduce a battery saver feature for the Steam Deck for the first time. The new battery saver option is called Battery Charge Limit, and can be found under the Power submenu in Settings. The feature allows users to set a maximum charge limit for their Steam Deck, with a maximum of 80% charge recommended for devices that are usually left on charge, or that rarely have their battery fully depleted. This kind of feature, designed to prolong the working life of lithium-ion batteries, is already commonly implemented in devices like mobile phones and laptops, and now is starting to become more common in the gaming space. Nintendo recently revealed that the Switch 2 will have a similar feature, which will stop the hybrid handheld console from charging once it reaches 90%. The SteamOS update also includes a number of other notable changes that will improve the OS from the ground up–with upgrades to the system’s Linux base, and the Mesa graphics driver base. Version 3.7.8 will also improve the Steam Deck’s desktop experience, with an upgrade to Plasma 6.2.5 for an overall smoother and more modern desktop experience. The latest update also improves support for third-party devices, including AMD-powered devices like the ROG Ally and original Lenovo Legion Go, as well as adding official support for the newer Legion Go S. SteamOS users can also expect a decent amount of other bug fixes, compatibility improvements and other enhancements to the system. 9. How Nashville transformed into a booming business hub How Nashville transformed into a booming business hub Nashville, Tennessee, has transformed from its reputation as “Music City” into a major U.S. metro thanks to rapid population growth, job opportunities in key industries like healthcare and tech and a good quality of life. It’s now become one of the fastest-growing U.S. cities, boasting a diverse community and a competitive economy. “It’s not just economics. It’s our climate here,” said John Eldridge, founder and CEO of development company E3 Construction Services. “It’s our culture here. It’s our location.” Some of the biggest names in tech like Amazon and Oracle have invested in the region, too, fueling a rapid tech expansion. Oracle has developed a $1.4 billion Nashville campus for its global headquarters, and Amazon has leased over 1 million square feet of office space in downtown — on top of opening a $230 million East Coast operations hub in 2018. According to a joint report by the Great Nashville Technology Council and Middle Tennessee State University, the number of tech jobs in the Nashville area grew by 17% between 2017 and 2022. “We found that we could locate here, we found that we could find the talent here,” said Amazon’s Vice President of Worldwide Economic Development Holly Sullivan adding that both the state of Tennessee and the city of Nashville had very business-friendly policies. “When you find that, you want to double down on that.” Many other corporate giants have been recruited to the area thanks to the city’s 10-year strategy that gets upgraded every decade. Under the plan, more than 600,000 jobs have been created since 1990 and per-capita income in the region has grown by more than 234%, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Commercial and residential real estate have boomed, though the city has struggled to keep up with enough affordable housing. Nashville ranked among cities with the biggest increase in home prices between 2014 and 2024, according to Construction Coverage. Watch this video to learn more about Nashville’s rise. 10. Crypto Joins the S&P 500. Here’s What the Critics Are Saying Crypto Joins the S&P 500. Here’s What the Critics Are Saying Coinbase became the first-ever native crypto company to join the S&P 500. Critics and naysayers are concerned about the potential risk of crypto being added to the portfolios of everyday Americans. Coinbase represents a safer, more regulated way for investors to get exposure to crypto without buying cryptocurrencies directly. 10 stocks we like better than Coinbase Global › More good news continues to roll in for the crypto industry. Market bellwether Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) is back above $100,000 and just set a new high of more than $111,000 as of this writing. And, on May 19, cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global (NASDAQ: COIN) formally joined the S&P 500. While crypto enthusiasts view the inclusion of Coinbase in the S&P 500 as cause for celebration, the critics and naysayers are already out in force. Here’s what they are saying. Coinbase joining the S&P 500 represents a changing of the guard. As the first-ever native crypto company in the S&P 500, Coinbase will replace credit-card company Discover Financial Services, which is being acquired by Capital One Financial (NYSE: COF). So, the S&P 500 is essentially swapping out a “traditional finance” stock with a “blockchain finance” stock. So what’s wrong with that? The problem, quite simply, is that any mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks the S&P 500 will now be forced to buy Coinbase. That means millions of Americans, whether they realize it or not, will also be buying Coinbase. As a result, they will (indirectly) be adding a tiny amount of crypto risk to their portfolios. Image source: Getty Images. If you think that crypto is a volatile and toxic asset, that’s not good news. In fact, some industry watchdogs are now warning that the mainstream adoption of crypto is “a disaster courting a catastrophe.” As they see it, any implosion of the crypto sector — of which there have been more than a few — will ultimately reverberate in the portfolios of everyday Americans. In a worst-case scenario, it might lead to something along the lines of what we saw in 2022, when the value of all crypto assets fell significantly, and Coinbase took a beating. Or, even worse, something along the lines of the global financial crisis of 2008. But any mention of the global financial crisis of 2008 is where things get interesting. That’s because it was arguably the event that gave rise to the creation of Bitcoin. In the very first block ever mined for the Bitcoin blockchain, there is a direct reference to the shenanigans of bankers and government officials. Story Continues The so-called Bitcoin “genesis block” quotes a U.K. newspaper headline from Jan. 3, 2009: “The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.” While nobody knows for sure what Satoshi Nakamoto (the pseudonymous founder of Bitcoin) had in mind with this cryptic message, it is generally interpreted as a warning against the perils of the traditional financial system. So, if anything, investors should be excited about Coinbase joining the S&P 500. They should be excited about Bitcoin surpassing $100,000. And they should be over-the-moon excited about the U.S. finally adopting pro-crypto policies and building a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. From this perspective, blockchain finance is going to save the world of traditional finance, not wreck it. That’s why Coinbase is potentially such an exciting investment play these days. It is at the forefront of crypto and blockchain innovation. In 2023, for example, it became the first publicly traded company with its own blockchain network. And it continues to develop innovative new digital assets for investors. At the same time, Coinbase is helping to build a stronger crypto industry through its support of better crypto regulation. I’m taking a positive view of the Coinbase news. Tech innovation is where value is being created these days. Coinbase — as the first-ever pure play crypto stock added to the S&P 500 — is arguably the single biggest innovator within the crypto industry right now. The same people who are worried about crypto joining the S&P 500 are probably also the same people who are worried about new artificial intelligence (AI) companies joining the S&P 500. With AI, too, there is potential risk. Just talk to any industry leader in AI — they will admit there’s theoretical existential risk of super-smart AI wiping out humanity. That’s scarier than anything that could happen with crypto. There is a crypto revolution happening in America these days. Crypto is going mainstream, and a growing number of crypto companies are benefiting from this trend. If you’re not quite ready to add crypto to your portfolio directly, it might be worth taking a look at stocks such as Coinbase, which provide exposure to the broader crypto market in a safer, more regulated way. 16. Trump team debating how to tackle plan to ease sanctions on Syria – National Trump team debating how to tackle plan to ease sanctions on Syria – National Since President Donald Trump announced his intent to end a half-century of U.S. sanctions on Syria, a debate has developed in his administration over how quickly and thoroughly that should happen. At risk could be the future of a transitional government run by those who drove Syrian leader Bashar Assad from power late last year and hopes that it can stabilize the country after a devastating 13-year civil war that has left millions dead or displaced, the economy in ruins and thousands of foreign fighters still on Syrian soil. Story continues below advertisement U.S. presidents have piled up penalties over the years on the autocratic family that previously controlled Syria, and those could be quickly lifted or waived through executive action. But Congress imposed some of the strictest measures and would have to permanently remove them. Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, the former militant commander who led the overthrow, says he is working to build an inclusive government friendly to the West. Some Trump administration officials are pushing to lift or waive sanctions as fast as possible without demanding tough conditions first. Others in the administration have proposed a phased approach, giving short-term waivers soon on some sanctions and then tying extensions or a wider executive order to Syria meeting conditions, which could substantially slow — or even permanently prevent — longer-term relief. That would impede the interim government’s ability to attract investment and rebuild Syria after the war, critics say. “The Syria sanctions are a complex web of statutes, executive actions and United Nations Security Council resolutions that have to be unwound thoughtfully and cautiously,” White House National Security Council spokesman Max Bluestein said. 4:59 Trump says U.S. will lift sanctions on Syria, gets standing ovation in Saudi Arabia The administration is “currently analyzing the optimal way to do so” and would have an announcement soon, Bluestein said in a statement Thursday to The Associated Press. Story continues below advertisement A State Department proposal circulated among officials after Trump’s pledge on his Middle East trip last week lays out sweeping conditions for future phases of relief or permanent lifting of sanctions, including dismantling ************ militant groups as a top demand, according to a senior U.S. official familiar with the plan, who was not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. Additional proposals are circulating, including one shared this week that broadly emphasized taking all the action possible, as fast as possible, to help Syria rebuild, the official said. A welcome U.S. announcement in Syria People danced in the streets of Damascus after Trump announced in Saudi Arabia last week that he would “be ordering the cessation of sanctions against Syria in order to give them a chance at greatness.” Get breaking National news For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen. “We’re taking them all off,” Trump said a day before meeting the country’s new leader. “Good luck, Syria. Show us something special.” Story continues below advertisement This week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio advocated for a hedged approach in testimony before U.S. lawmakers. Rubio pushed for sanctions relief to start quickly, saying Syria’s five-month-old transition government could be weeks from “collapse and a full-scale civil war of epic proportions.” But asked what sanctions relief should look like overall, Rubio gave a one-word explanation: “Incremental.” Washington has levied sanctions against Syria’s former ruling family since 1979 over its support for Hezbollah and other Iranian-allied militant groups, its alleged chemical weapons program and its brutality against civilians as the Assad family fought to stay in power. The sanctions include heavy penalties for outside companies or investors doing business there. Syria needs tens of billions of dollars in investment to restore its battered infrastructure and help the estimated 90% of the population living in poverty. 10:15 Canada must ensure ‘darker forces’ don’t take over Syria: Special envoy Syria’s interim leaders “didn’t pass their background check with the FBI,” Rubio acknowledged to lawmakers this week. The group that al-Sharaa led, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, was originally affiliated with al-Qaida, although it later renounced ties and took a more moderate tone. It is still listed by the U.S. as a terrorist organization. Story continues below advertisement But al-Sharaa’s government could be the best chance for rebuilding the country and avoiding a power vacuum that could allow for a resurgence of the Islamic State and other extremist groups. “If we engage them, it may work out, it may not work out. If we do not engage them, it was guaranteed to not work out,” Rubio said. Mouaz Moustafa, executive director of the U.S.-based Syrian Emergency Task Force and an advocate who has been influential in helping shape past U.S. policy on Syria, said he has been circulating a framework for a proposed executive order that would allow Trump to quickly remove many of the sanctions. Trending Now Kim Jong Un furious over ship launch ******, calls mishap a ‘criminal act’ Still can’t find a summer job? Why experts say it’s ‘brutal out there’ Trump’s move to lift the penalties is aimed at “preventing a failed state and ending perpetual violence,” but some in the administration are trying to “water down” the decision, Moustafa asserted. Debate within the Trump administration The initial document sent out last week by the State Department’s policy and planning staff proposed a three-phase road map for sanctions relief, starting with short-term waivers. Progress toward additional relief and an outright lifting of penalties in future phases would be tied to tough conditions that generated pushback from some officials. Story continues below advertisement Removing “************ terror groups” from Syria is first on the list of requirements to get to the second phase. Supporters of sanctions relief say the condition might be impossible, given the subjectivity of determining which groups meet that definition and at what point they can be declared removed. Other conditions for moving to the second phase are for the new government to take custody of detention facilities housing Islamic State fighters in northeast Syria and to carry out a recent deal with the U.S.-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces — which manages the detention facilities — that includes the SDF being incorporated into the Syrian army. To get to phase three, Syria would be required to join the Abraham Accords — normalized relations with Israel — and to prove that it had destroyed all of the previous government’s chemical weapons. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu previously pushed for the Trump administration not to lift sanctions on Syria. Israel has been suspicious of the new government, although Syrian officials have said publicly that they do not want a conflict with Israel. Since Assad fell, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes and seized a U.N.-patrolled buffer zone in Syria. Congressional sanctions on Syria will take much longer to lift While some of the sanctions can be lifted by executive action, others face a more complex process. Story continues below advertisement The most difficult could be the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act, a wide-reaching set of sanctions passed by Congress in 2019 in response to alleged war crimes by Assad’s government. It specifically blocks reconstruction activities, and although it can be waived for 180 days by executive order, investors are likely to be wary of reconstruction projects when sanctions could be reinstated after six months. In a meeting last week in Turkey with Syria’s foreign minister, Rubio and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham explained that they supported Trump’s call to ease sanctions immediately but that permanent relief would require action by the Syrian government to meet conditions that the president laid out, according to other U.S. officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. “We have a moment here to provide some capability to this new government that should be conditions-based,” Graham said this week. “And I don’t want that moment to pass.” —Sewell reported from Beirut. 18. Hurricanes hoodoo bites Reds in costly Super loss Hurricanes hoodoo bites Reds in costly Super loss The Queensland Reds have coughed up fourth spot to the Hurricanes, who extended their winning streak to 10 games and 12 years in a 31-27 Super Rugby Pacific battle in Brisbane. Hurricanes backrower Du’Plessis Kirifi was immovable at the breakdown, helping the Reds slide to a 2-4 record from their past six games after leading the competition less than two months ago. It was the Hurricanes’ 10th consecutive win against the Reds since 2013. Victory jumped them from fifth, shunting Les Kiss’s side out of the top four by one point ahead of the new six-team finals format. Fourth place is significant, given the highest-placed loser after week one of the finals will still go through to the semi-final. The Reds at least collected a bonus point in the loss, but will need to beat Fijian Drua in Brisbane next week and have other results go their way to regain a top-four berth. Hurricanes No.10 Ruben Love scored in the first minute when a deflected grubber fell into his path, only for the Reds to reply through Tate McDermott two minutes later. Proctor ? Super Rugby Pacific (@SuperRugby) May 23, 2025 A pair of successful Tom Lynagh penalty kicks – incredibly the first attempted by the Reds all season – looked to have steadied the hosts. But three tries in 10 minutes gave the Hurricanes an 11-point buffer at the break, including halfback Cam Roigard chipping and regathering for a brilliant solo effort. The Reds came out of the gates well, with Jock Campbell busting through to set up McDermott’s second try and make it a six-point game. Queensland then went ahead by one after going 20 phases off their own try-line for a brilliant try, finished when Joe Brial carried three men over the line. But knock-ons from Harry Wilson and Hunter Paisami, the latter with two men free on his outside shoulder, proved costly. Fehi Fineanganofo planted his second try of the game as the visitors reclaimed a four-point lead with 15 minutes to play. 19. Mozilla is shutting down Pocket – here are the 3 best bookmarking alternatives Mozilla is shutting down Pocket – here are the 3 best bookmarking alternatives Mozilla is closing popular read-it-later app Pocket There are several alternatives that you can use instead The Fakespot online shopping extension is also being shuttered Mozilla is closing down the popular Pocket app, which lets you save articles from the web so that you can read them later. The company is also shuttering Fakespot, a browser extension used to expose fake product ratings to help you avoid getting misled when shopping online. Pocket lets you save articles to the app that you can then read at another time. While many of the best browsers like Google Chrome have built-in bookmarking, Pocket is different in that it tweaks the experience to make reading more enjoyable. To that end, it adds its own formatting so that articles appear in a uniform, readable style, and it also allows you to add tags and highlights for better organization. In a blog post, Mozilla said the move was made to help it focus on its Firefox web browser, adding that “the way people save and consume content on the web has evolved, so we’re channeling our resources into projects that better match browsing habits today.” The company has also posted a more detailed guide to its decision and explained what will come next on its website. You may like Pocket will shut down on July 8, 2025. As of now, new users can no longer download the app or purchase new Pocket Premium subscriptions, with current subscribers being refunded on a pro rata basis. Existing Pocket users will be able to export their saved articles until October 8, 2025, after which time their data will be permanently deleted. Mozilla has published a guide on exporting your Pocket saves to help with the process. As for Fakespot, its apps, website and extensions will become unavailable on July 1, 2025. The Review Checker feature that’s built into the Firefox web browser will stop working on June 10, 2025. Sorely missed (Image credit: Future) I’ve used Pocket religiously for many years, and the move to shut it down came as an unwelcome surprise. Since I found out about the move, I’ve been looking for alternative apps that let me save articles and read through them at my leisure. So far, I’ve seen Instapaper come highly recommended. It’s designed to help you save articles from around the web and display them in a simple, easy-to-read format. It can even speak articles aloud so you can listen on the go. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. Another alternative is Readwise Reader. Like Instapaper, it’s great for saving from the web, but it also works with RSS feeds, X threads, PDFs, newsletters, YouTube videos, and more. There’s integration with Readwise’s highlighting capabilities, plus a beautiful design that’s easy on the eye. There’s also Raindrop, which some of my TechRadar colleagues wholeheartedly recommend. This bills itself as a bookmark manager, so it helps with organizing almost anything you find on the web, not just articles. It’s built for teams and will automatically back up any files and web pages you add, ensuring you can keep reading even if the original source is lost. Despite coming across these alternatives, I can’t say I’m not disappointed to lose Pocket. One of its best aspects was its suggested articles feature, which has helped me find an incredible array of fascinating stories that I’d otherwise never have discovered. Once it goes, it’ll be sorely missed. 21. Big Oil’s record-breaking shareholder payouts under threat Big Oil’s record-breaking shareholder payouts under threat Oil prices held near two-week highs in early trading on Wednesday, supported by an agreement between the U.S. and China to temporarily lower their reciprocal tariffs and a falling U.S. dollar. Imaginima | E+ | Getty Images A protracted slump in crude prices has ramped up the pressure on Big Oil’s commitment to allocate cash to shareholders. Western energy supermajors have long sought to return cash to investors through buyback programs and dividends to keep their shareholders happy. Energy executives have also expressed confidence that they can continue to reward investors following a relatively robust set of first-quarter earnings. Some analysts, however, are less convinced about Big Oil’s pledge to return ever-higher shareholder returns, citing already stretched balance sheets and a sharp drop in crude prices. Oil prices have fallen more than 12% year-to-date amid persistent demand concerns and U.S. President Donald Trump’s back-and-forth trade policy. Espen Erlingsen, head of upstream research at consultancy Rystad Energy, said recent market volatility has left the energy majors with “few economically attractive options” that allow for reinvestment while maintaining a competitive capital returns framework. “As companies like Shell and ExxonMobil continue to push ahead with large-scale buyback programs despite shrinking cash inflows, the durability of these strategies is in question. For now, the majors are holding the line. But if oil prices remain depressed, adjustments may be inevitable,” Erlingsen said in a research note published Thursday. Share buybacks, which are typically more flexible than dividends, are “likely to be the first lever pulled,” he added. In that vein, weaker crude prices mean energy majors will have less cash to return to shareholders. BP logo is seen at a gas station in this illustration photo taken in Poland on March 15, 2025. Nurphoto | Nurphoto | Getty Images Investor concern over the sustainability of Big Oil’s shareholder returns comes after a year of record-breaking payouts. Analysts at Rystad said total shareholder rewards from the likes of Shell, BP, TotalEnergies, Eni, Exxon Mobil and Chevron climbed to a whopping $119 billion in 2024, beating the previous record set in 2023. The payout ratio, which refers to shareholder payouts as a share of corporate cash flow from operations (CFFO), meanwhile jumped up to 56% last year, Rystad said. That was well above the 30% to 40% range that was typical for the industry from 2012 through to 2022, the analysts added. If shareholder payouts were to remain at 2024 levels throughout 2025, Rystad said this would imply companies distribute more than 80% of their cash flow to investors. The estimate was based on Big Oil’s first-quarter CFFO as a proxy for full-year performance. Point of maximum weakness For European majors, analysts at Bank of America said at the start of the year in a note entitled “bye-bye buybacks?” that it anticipated cuts in such returns, from companies whose balance sheets were already stretched. The Wall Street bank cited BP, Repsol and Eni at the time. It added that only Shell, TotalEnergies and Equinor were among the regional players likely to keep their respective 2025 buyback run-rates intact. Spokespersons for Repsol and Eni were not immediately available to comment when contacted by CNBC. So far, BP is the only European energy major to have trimmed its buyback run-rate. The beleaguered British oil company last month posted a sharp fall in first-quarter profit and reduced its share buyback to $750 million, down from $1.75 billion in the prior quarter. BP, which has been the subject of intense takeover speculation, also reported significantly lower cash flow and rising net debt for the first quarter. Lydia Rainforth, head of European energy, equity research at Barclays, said BP’s future appears to be “really bright” — on the condition that the company can get through the next six months. “If I think about when is that point of maximum weakness for BP, it is over the next six months, ultimately. Debt continues to go up a little bit, production continues to fall until mid-2026,” Rainforth told CNBC’s Steve Sedgwick on Thursday. “As I get towards the end of the year, hopefully we’ll see that sum of divestments taking down debt. Things like … selling their lubricants business, that could raise between $12 billion to $15 billion. It brings down debt, you start to see the benefit of cost savings coming through, and then production growth starts kicking in next year,” she added. 25. Leah Williamson: From Arsenal mascot to Champions League finalist Leah Williamson: From Arsenal mascot to Champions League finalist Standing in Arsenal’s way on Saturday are Europe’s dominant force Barcelona, who are chasing a third successive Champions League title and a fourth in total. Chelsea suffered a brutal 8-2 aggregate semi-final defeat by the Catalan giants and Williamson said Arsenal go into the game hoping their underdog status plays to their advantage. “On paper I’m not surprised because it would be disrespectful to think any other way given what they have achieved in the last three years in the competition,” she said of the ‘underdog’ tag. “When we speak of Barcelona, everyone is very respectful and humble to what they are as a football club and what they have achieved. We are going [there] to win. It’s not an underdog mentality in that sense. “Now the trophy is on offer and we have one game to go and do it. 100% we go there with the belief we will do it.” Saturday’s game takes place at the 50,095-capacity Jose Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon – home of men’s side Sporting. That in itself shows how far the game has come since Williamson walked out as mascot in front of 3,467 people at Meadow Park in 2007. After captaining England to the European Championship title in 2022, Williamson believes victory for Arsenal in the Champions League would produce another spike in popularity in the domestic game. “I think it would have a similar effect,” she said. “I think the interest levels, the idea that you can come and watch your team who are up there with the best in the world… “Recently our English teams have done really well and got further and further, but to bring those nights and bring that success back to England would be an incredible achievement seeing as it has been so long. “I’m very proud to play for a club that has such a rich history. As a player, when you are the person that walks out on to the pitch, you are responsible for the legacy that lives on past you behind the badge. “We want to be involved and we want to commit.
