Plane Passenger Changed Seats After They Say Child Threw 2.5-hour Tantrum. The Parents’ Response Was a Shock Plane Passenger Changed Seats After They Say Child Threw 2.5-hour Tantrum. The Parents’ Response Was a Shock A plane passenger says they requested to change seats after a child with special needs was screaming and kicking their seat for 2.5 hours. The child allegedly reached through the seats to touch the passenger and knocked their headphones off their head. While moving seats, the passenger claims that the parents of the child “heckled” them A plane passenger is wondering if they were insensitive to a child with special needs after they changed seats to be farther away from them. The passenger, who shared the ordeal on Reddit, recounts that the incident occurred 30 minutes after takeoff on an international flight. The child, who was sitting directly behind the passenger, began to have “an inconsolable meltdown,” they write. He was screaming and forcibly kicking and hitting my seat and even knocked my headphones off my head with his fist,” the passenger says. The passenger claims they only addressed the parents once at the beginning of the episode to ask them “to keep him from reaching between the seats and touching me.” Getty Passenger writes on Reddit about recent flight Related: Man in Norway Wakes Up to Find Huge Ship Has Crashed into His Backyard: ‘It Was So Unreal’ This went on for an hour, the passenger claims, before they decided they could no longer stay put. They rang the flight attendant call button to ask if there was another open seat they could move to. The passenger shares that the flight attendant was “amazing” and “immediately found a middle seat about 10 rows back.” As they stood up to make their way back to the empty seat, however, they say it became more of a walk of shame. “I got heckled by the parents of the kid as well as a bunch of neighboring passengers for being insensitive and rude,” the passenger claims. Now, they’re wondering if they were in the wrong “for not just dealing with it.” Related: Her Sister Asked Her to Cancel Her Graduation Trip to Babysit. The consensus of fellow Reddit users in the comments was that the passenger was not in the wrong for requesting a seat change. Commenters who identified themselves as the parent of a child with special needs weighed in in the comments. They sympathized with the parents on the plane, but said how they handled the situation was uncalled for. “Moments like this is why it can be very difficult as a parent but with that said, they cannot allow their kid to touch anyone on a plane,” said one. “The comments from everyone else are completely uncalled for as well.” Another mom who said it can be “a nightmare” to fly with her child, but still felt for the parents. “It’s not easy and I’m sure it’s stressful for them too but that’s no excuse for them to take it out on others.” The politics of seat swapping is a hot-button topic in air travel, but this passenger followed the advice often offered by travel experts for mid-air etiquette. “I am always in the camp of getting a flight attendant involved for sticky in-flight situations,” Fora travel expert and advisor Nicole Campoy Jackson previously told PEOPLE. “Tensions run high when we’re traveling, plus they would know if there’s a solution to this problem. They have more context than we, the passengers, do.” Read the original article on People Source link #Plane #Passenger #Changed #Seats #Child #Threw #2.5hour #Tantrum #Parents #Response #Shock Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Russia’s attack drones are flying higher and faster. A Ukrainian air defender says old machine guns aren’t enough to kill them anymore. Russia’s attack drones are flying higher and faster. A Ukrainian air defender says old machine guns aren’t enough to kill them anymore. Russia’s drone attacks have become more complex and difficult to defend against. A Ukrainian team leader overseeing a mobile air defense unit said the drones fly faster and higher. He said his unit needs shoulder-launched missiles in addition to the machine guns it has been using. Russia’s drone attacks are becoming increasingly complex, with enemy threats becoming harder to kill, the team leader for a Ukrainian mobile air defense unit told Business Insider. He said higher-reaching weapons are needed to beat them. Oleksiy, the deputy commander of an air defense unit with Ukraine’s Territorial Defense Forces, said Russia’s drone tactics have changed over the last few months; it is now operating drones at higher altitudes and using modified ones that can fly faster. This presents a challenge for air defenders, particularly those armed only with pickup truck-mounted machine guns. At the heart of Russia’s drone attacks is the Shahed-136, an Iranian-designed weapon that Moscow now also produces at home. Historically, these one-way attack drones could fly at speeds of over 115 mph with a nearly 90-pound explosive warhead. Though the Shaheds are slower and less lethal than cruise or ballistic missiles, they are significantly cheaper, allowing Russia to launch them in large-scale attacks. Last weekend, for instance, Moscow sent 273 of them into Ukraine, marking one of its largest drone attacks since Russia launched its full-scale invasion over three years ago. Oleksiy, whose unit is tasked with protecting civilians and critical infrastructure on the outskirts of Kyiv, said that Russia still operates the conventional Shaheds. But Moscow is now using a modified version with an engine that enables it to travel at speeds of over 180 mph. It has also increased the explosive payloads of the old and new drones to more than double the original. Russia’s Shahed drones are increasingly becoming a headache for Ukraine’s mobile air defense units.Photo by FLORENT VERGNES/AFP via Getty Images Russia is using decoy drones, too. These don’t have warheads but are designed to exhaust Ukraine’s air defenses because they look convincing, appearing just as deadly as the real thing. And while they are unarmed, these drones can perform long-distance reconnaissance missions. Russia used to launch its Shaheds at low altitudes to avoid radar detection. However, it is now flying the drones higher, at over 8,000 feet — beyond the reach of the machine guns that the mobile units are using. *** previously observed Oleksiy’s unit fielding a .50 caliber M2 Browning mounted in the bed of a truck. Oleksiy said that this newer tactic makes the Shaheds inaccessible to mobile fire groups like his — all they can do is observe them and report back. These loitering munitions can then gather in a specific area and simultaneously strike targets. He said that while the Ukrainians can still shoot them down, the kill figures “have begun to decrease.” Russia’s defense ministry and its embassy in the US did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the change in tactics described to ***. In a February intelligence update, Britain’s defense ministry wrote that Russia could likely launch at least 2,000 drones each month for the entire year. On Saturday night alone, it attacked Ukraine with almost 300 drones, Kyiv said. “To overcome this altitude barrier and stably engage drones with firepower, mobile groups need to use additional weapons,” like shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles, or MANPADS, Oleksiy said. Ukrainian soldiers use MANPADS to take down Russian air threats.Anadolu/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images MANPADS stands for Man-Portable Air Defense Systems. In Ukraine, common examples are the American-made FIM-92 Stinger or Soviet-era 9K38 Igla. These are typically used to shoot down threats like low-flying aircraft, such as helicopters, and even cruise missiles. “Right now, there is a shortage of inexpensive, hand-held MANPADS systems to shoot down drones,” Oleksiy explained. “The military is ready to undergo a rapid course in MANPADS operation and use this means of destruction when it is impossible to do so with machine guns.” He said that a combined-arms approach to destroying drones, like using portable missile launchers in tandem with machine guns, would strengthen Ukraine’s ability to defend itself. “If our unit were additionally equipped with a manual MANPADS,” he said, “the effectiveness of destroying air targets would increase by twofold.” Read the original article on Business Insider Source link #Russias #attack #drones #flying #higher #faster #Ukrainian #air #defender #machine #guns #arent #kill #anymore Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Remembering the Indian scientist who challenged the Big Bang theory Remembering the Indian scientist who challenged the Big Bang theory Prachee Kulkarni BBC News, Marathi BBC/Sharad Shankar Badhe Narlikar was a prolific scholar who published over 300 research papers In his 1983 science fiction story, an Indian astrophysicist predicted what schools would look like in 2050. Jayant Narlikar envisioned a scene where an alien, living among humans, would sit in front of a screen and attend online classes. The aliens are yet to manifest, but online classes became a reality for students far sooner, in 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit. Narlikar also famously proposed an alternative to the Big Bang Theory – the popular idea that the universe was created in a single moment from a single point. He believed that the universe had always existed, expanding continuously into infinity. With his passing on Tuesday, India lost one of its most celebrated astrophysicists. Narlikar was 86 – a man far ahead of his times and someone who shaped a generation of Indian researchers through his lifelong dedication to science education. His ******** was attended by hundreds, from school children to renowned scientists and even his housekeeping staff, underscoring the profound impact he had on society. Getty Images Narlikar famously proposed an alternative to the Big Bang theory Born on 19 July, 1938, in the town of Kolhapur in the western state of Maharashtra, Narlikar was raised in a home steeped in academic tradition. His father, Vishnu Narlikar, was a professor and mathematician, and mother Sumati was a scholar of the Sanskrit language. Following in his parents footsteps, the studious Narlikar went to Cambridge University for higher studies where topped a highly prestigious mathematical course. He also took a deep interest in astrophysics and cosmology. But his most significant episode at Cambridge was his association with his PhD guide, physicist Sir Fred Hoyle. Together, Narlikar and Hoyle laid the groundwork for a revolutionary alternative to the popular Big Bang theory. The two physicists contested the Big Bang Theory, which posits that all matter and energy in the universe came into existence in one single instance about 13.8 billion years ago. The Hoyle-Narlikar theory boldly proposed the continuous creation of new matter in an infinite universe. Their theory was based on what they called a quasi-steady state model. In his autobiography, My Tale of Four Cities, Narlikar used a banking analogy to explain the theory. “To understand this concept better, think of capital invested in a bank which offers a fixed rate of compound interest. That is, the interest accrued is constantly added to the capital which therefore grows too, along with the interest.” He explained that the universe expanded like the capital with compound interest. However, as the name ‘steady state’ implies, the universe always looks the same to the observer. Astronomer Somak Raychaudhury says that though Narlikar’s theory isn’t as popular as the Big Bang, it is still useful. “He advanced mechanisms by which matter could be continually created and destroyed in an infinite universe,” Raychaudhary said. “While the Big Bang model gained broader acceptance, many tools developed for the steady-state model remain useful today,” he added Raychaudhary recollects that even after Hoyle began to entertain elements of the Big Bang theory, Narlikar remained committed to the steady-state theory. A sign outside his office fittingly stated: “The Big Bang is an exploding myth.” Arvind Paranjpye Narlikar’s reply to a student’s letter, written in the Marathi language Narlikar stayed in the *** till 1971 as a Fellow at King’s College and a founding member of the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy. As he shot to global fame in the astrophysics circles, the science community in India took note of his achievements. In 1972, he returned to India and immediately took charge of the Theoretical Astrophysics Group at the coveted ***** Institute of Fundamental Research, which he led it till 1989. But his biggest contribution to India was the creation of an institution dedicated to cutting-edge research and the democratisation of science. This dream materialised in 1988, when Narlikar, along with other distinguished scientists, founded the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in Pune city in western India. From a modest 100sq ft room, IUCAA has gone on to become an internationally respected institution for astronomy and astrophysics. Narlikar served as its founder-director till 2003, and continued to be an emeritus professor after that. He insisted that IUCAA should include programs aimed at school children and the general public. Monthly lectures, science camps, and workshops became regular events. Recalling Narlikar’s vision for the institution, science educator Arvind Gupta says, “He said PhD scholars don’t fall from the sky, you must catch them young. He offered me a place to stay, told me to try running the children’s science centre for six months, and I ended up staying 11 years. He gave me wings to fly.” Despite being a prolific scholar who published over 300 research papers, Narlikar never confined himself to being just a scientist. He also authored many science fiction books that have been translated into multiple languages. These stories were often grounded in scientific principles. In a story called Virus, published in 2015, he envisioned a pandemic taking over the world; his 1986 book Waman Parat Na Ala (The Return of Vaman), tackled the ethical dilemmas of artificial intelligence. Sanjeev Dhurandhar, who was part of the Indian team that contributed to the physical detection of gravitational waves in 2015, recalled how Narlikar inspired him to attempt the unthinkable. “He gave me a complex problem early in my research. After I struggled for a week, he solved it on the board in 15 minutes – not to show superiority, but to guide and inspire. His openness to gravitational waves was what gave me the courage to pursue it.” A well-known rationalist, Narlikar also took it upon himself to challenge pseudoscience. In 2008, he co-authored a paper that challenged astrology using a statistical method. Raychaudhary said that his motivation to challenge pseudoscience came from the belief system of questioning everything that did not have a scientific basis. But when it came to science, Narlikar believed in exploring the slimmest of possibilities. In his last days, Narlikar continued doing what he loved most – replying to children’s letters and writing about science on his blog. ‘Love conquers all’ – Wakefield couple marry on intensive care unit ‘Love conquers all’ – Wakefield couple marry on intensive care unit Jessica Bayley BBC News, Yorkshire Laura Knight Staff at Pinderfields Hospital’s intensive care unit helped to organise a wedding ceremony on the ward When 49-year-old David Fontana told his girlfriend he loved her for the first time, Jennifer Rush’****** song The Power of Love was playing in the background. Nine years later, the same track was playing as Joanne Stringfellow, 55, walked down a corridor at an intensive care unit to marry him. The pair, who married at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield just 24 hours after they were told to say their final goodbyes, have been speaking to the BBC. “We thought it would be something nice to do before it happened,” Mrs Fontana said. Mr Fontana has a rare autoimmune condition impacting the lungs and is classed as being in single organ failure. When Mr Fontana’s dependency on an oxygen machine became more severe, he was told there was little more medics could do to help him. “It was a big shock, and we said about getting married,” Mrs Fontana said. Laura Knight David Fontana and Joanne Stringfellow met online in 2016 Newly married Mrs Fontana said hospital staff “did everything” to make the South Elmsall pair’s wedding on 29 April feel special in difficult circumstances. Mr Fontana had been using a CPAP hood to assist with his breathing, but they instead fitted him with a nasal cannula for the wedding to allow the couple to kiss. Overcome with emotion upon seeing her groom’s face, Mrs Fontana ran down the makeshift aisle at the hospital in West Yorkshire. “When we got to the door I was so pleased to see Dave’s face that I just let go of my dad’s hand and ran up and kissed him,” she said. Six of the couple’s friends were present at the service, a poem supplied by the registry office was read and the hospital canteen provided a cake. Mr Fontana’s ward room was decorated by hospital staff without the couple’s knowledge. “The day before they had been running around with the banners and balloons trying to avoid me,” Mrs Fontana said. “To be fair, that day, you probably could have smacked me in the face and I would not have even noticed because we were absorbed in ourselves having had that news.” Rachel Lindley The couple’s wedding rings were blessed by the NHS trust’s chaplain Against all odds, Mr Fontana’s health has improved since the wedding and he has been moved to an acute care ward. He described the experience as “surreal” after watching back a wedding video made by hospital staff. “Here I am three weeks later, still alive and kicking,” Mr Fontana added. While it may not have been the wedding the couple usually would have planned for, the pair described it as “very special”. “I keep telling everybody that love conquers all and it is the love and the care between us that has spurred him on, though science will probably say that it was the drugs kicking in,” Mrs Fontana concluded. Trump’s Surgeon General pick credits magic mushrooms with helping her find love. Here’s what to know about the psychedelic drug Trump’s Surgeon General pick credits magic mushrooms with helping her find love. Here’s what to know about the psychedelic drug Dr. Casey Means, a Stanford-educated surgeon and wellness influencer with no active medical license, is President Donald Trump’s pick to become the next U.S. Surgeon General. But what you might not know is that she is also a fan of the psychedelic drug called psilocybin, found in magic mushrooms. Means says that she first took psychedelic mushrooms in 2021, the Associated Press reports. Means attributes psychedelics to helping her find love, and said the drugs can be “a doorway to a different reality that is free from the limiting beliefs of my ego, feelings, and personal history.” She also wrote in a recent book that people should consider psilocybin-assisted therapy, according to the AP. The drug is federally ********. However, the Food and Drug Administration has approved psilocybin to be used as a “breakthrough” drug. This designation helps accelerate the development and review of medicines that have been shown to improve treatment for illnesses. Clinicians study psilocybin in carefully-controlled experiments. However, a peer-reviewed study published last month shows usage has skyrocketed, particularly among adolescents and people over 30. In 2023, more adults used magic mushrooms than other recreational drugs such as ********, ****, methamphetamine or ******** opioids, the study found. Dr. Albert Garcia-Romeu, an associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, spoke to The Independent about the rise of psilocybin — and what researchers are still trying to figure out. Dr. Casey Means (left) could be the next Surgeon General. She’s also a supporter of the use of magic mushrooms for different types of therapy (Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved) What do researchers know so far about magic mushrooms? Psilocybin has been studied for its physical and psychological effects by researchers in medical settings. Garcia-Romeu’s own research explores how psilocybin can aid addiction treatment. The psychedelic medication showed “really good success rates” in helping people quit smoking when combined with therapy, he told The Independent. Psilocybin has also been shown to treat depression, Garcia-Romeu said. The treatment is particularly effective in treating depression and anxiety in ******* patients who are approaching the end of their life, he added. While psilocybin is known for its psychological effects and can treat mental health disorders, it also shows promise in treating a variety of physical illnesses. Studies have shown the drug can help patients suffering from migraines, the chronic pain condition fibromyalgia and Lyme disease. What do we still have to learn? There’s still a lot we don’t know about psilocybin’s effects on the body. Researchers still aren’t sure how exactly psilocybin works, Garcia-Romeu said, and don’t know how or why psilocybin treats certain mental health conditions. Scientists also don’t know how it causes certain biological changes, such as reducing inflammation, according to Garcia-Romeu. “We don’t really know how or why one dose of the drug can have an antidepressant effect that lasts anywhere from six weeks or longer,” he said. Magic mushrooms can sometimes be used to help treat depression or addiction, but there’s still lots that researchers don’t know about the drug (Getty Images) Researchers are also working to understand who these drugs are best able to help. “Who’s going to be a person that responds well, and who’s going to be a person that won’t necessarily have a good treatment response?” Garcia-Romeu said. “Who is at risk of potentially developing problems after receiving these types of treatments?” What are the dangers of taking magic mushrooms? While psilocybin can’t cause you to overdose in the same way as drugs like fentanyl, alcohol and Xanax, it can trigger serious mental illnesses, especially in large amounts. “It can cause very intense psychoactive effects, so when people are under the influence, they can become disoriented, they can become paranoid, they can become delusional,” Garcia-Romeu said. Psilocybin can also unlock mental illnesses that haven’t come to the surface yet, like schizophrenia or Bipolar I disorder, Garcia-Romeu explained. This typically happens in patients with a personal or family history of these disorders. “It could trigger these ongoing problems for weeks, months, or even years,” Garcia-Romeu said. “They could then end up having to deal with this sort of latent mental health issue that was underlying.” There’s also many different species of mushrooms, and getting them from a non-clinical environment can also mean not knowing exactly which type of mushroom you’re ingesting. What is the legal status of magic mushrooms? At the federal level, psilocybin is considered a “Schedule I” drug. That means it has no accepted medical use and has a high potential for abuse. But, thanks to the FDA’s “breakthrough” designation, researchers are learning more about how it can treat certain illnesses every day. Garcia-Romeu expects it could be widely legalized for medical use under a doctor’s supervision within a decade. Many people who report using it recreationally also have chronic pain or mental health conditions, and it’s believed the use is part of self-medication and management. But widespread legalization isn’t going to happen any time soon, he said. “Legalization to the point where people would be able to go out and buy this like they would alcohol at a liquor store, I don’t think that’s going to happen in this country probably in our lifetime,” he said. There are also evolving policy conversations about psilocybin use for religious and cultural purposes. Psilocybin has been used by Indigenous communities for centuries. “Long before Western science or medicine knew anything about these drugs, they were being used as part of the spiritual and religious lives of Indigenous cultures in Central, South and North America,” Garcia-Romeu said. “That’s something that will probably lead to more debate and policy discussions, and it’s unclear how exactly that’s going to shake out,” he added. Toilet rules create anxiety over periods, say school pupils Toilet rules create anxiety over periods, say school pupils Holly Holly, 15, says one of the main reasons she left school was because of a lack of access to toilets Students say they have been left feeling embarrassed and anxious due to “baffling” school toilet restrictions. Holly, from Pentyrch, Cardiff, said she would frequently be denied permission to go to the toilet during class, or struggle to find one that was not “locked off”, which contributed to her decision to be home-schooled. “I don’t understand why, it’s a normal, natural human thing,” she said. It comes after a ***-wide survey found 65% of students were unable to access toilets at their school freely at any time. Cardiff council said it acknowledged the challenges faced by schools but was committed to working with them to find solutions for pupils to access toilets when needed. Holly, who is autistic and has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and sensory processing disorder, previously attended Radyr Comprehensive School but began being home-schooled with an online tutor in January 2024. The 15-year-old said toilet rules were a “major contributor” in the decision. “Sometimes we would have to ask in front of the class and we would be denied, sometimes we would have to tell them why we needed to go to the toilet,” she said. “It was hugely embarrassing, you would toy with yourself [as to] whether you had the confidence to put up your hand and ask. It’s a big feeling of potential judgement.” Holly said she and her friends had “bled through our underwear”, adding: “One of my friends bled through onto a chair and had to do a walk of shame. It was one of her first periods and people made fun of her for weeks.” She said some toilets were “locked off” during class time, to stop pupils going to certain parts of the school. Holly added there was “massive inequality” for menstruating students, who sometimes had to detour to the school office to get ******* products. “Even the women in the school act like they don’t understand what it’s like. “I don’t understand why ******* products can’t be in the toilets.” She said she accepted that misbehaviour in the toilets – such as vandalism, vaping and truancy – was a concern for staff, but she wanted them to “address those issues” instead of “punishing good students”. Holly eventually secured a toilet pass, which meant teachers had to allow her out, but said she still faced challenges. “I am autistic, so the toilets were a space where I could regulate,” she explained, adding if she took too long someone would “bang on the door” or think she was “skiving off”. She said this could lead to being overwhelmed. “One thing gets ******* and ******* until I feel like I am going to explode, and then I can’t go back to class and I miss valuable learning time.” She said she was now “much happier” as she could “do what I need to, when I need to”. ‘There is so much pressure already’ Holly’s mum, Jo Wallace, said she was “baffled” by the toilet rules, adding teenagers were “expected to be very mature and make big life decisions” but also “not trusted” to use the toilets. “I can’t understand how schools have got to this point,” she said. “I think it’s laziness, because I think there are ways they could address issues without blocking [toilets] off. “They need to realise it’s having a very detrimental effect.” She added: “It’s a difficult time getting your ******* in school, and they have so much pressure on them already. “I went to Radyr myself and it wasn’t like that, we had access to the toilets at all points, it wasn’t an issue.” Ms Wallace said she understood teachers had to follow policies, but questioned the “benefit” of the rules on “children who are just trying to get through the day”. A ***-wide survey by Caerphilly-based company phs Group, in partnership with menstrual justice charity Irise International, found 65% of students were unable to access toilets at their school freely at any time. Of these, 29% needed permission from a teacher to leave the classroom and 15% required a pass to be issued. Of the 501 teachers who took part, 5% reported school toilets being locked at some point during the school day, including break times, with 4% saying they were shut all the time. And16% said they had prevented a student who had periods from using the bathroom during class, with reasons including students wanting to skip lessons or meet friends. About 30% felt students on their periods should wait until the end of a lesson. Erin Erin, 17, says she has been told off by teachers for leaving class to use the toilet Erin, a sixth form student at Bedwas High School in Caerphilly county, said following renovations to the school toilets, facilities were now designated to different year groups but were not equal in terms of access to sanitary products and bins. The 17-year-old said toilets were locked during lessons and permission was mostly denied apart from a “handful” of times, “if you say it’s an emergency”. “When I’ve needed to go to change my ******* products, I’ve been refused. Because I really needed to go, I decided to speak out in class about why [and] ended up walking out and been told off,” she said. Like Holly, Erin said she understood “behavioural issues” were the reason for the restrictions, but added it was unfair on others. “Not everyone can raise their voice in class and say exactly why they need to go. And having to do this in front of teachers and boys in the class could be embarrassing. “One of my friends was too shy to speak up, and she leaked through her uniform.” Cardiff council said more than £1m had been invested through its ******* Dignity initiative which aims to improve school facilities “to ensure dignity for learners”. “Secondary schools are provided with a variety of ******* products, and dispensers have been installed in school toilets to ensure easy access to ******* products without needing to ask staff,” it said. “We acknowledge the challenges some schools face in keeping toilet facilities free from anti-social behaviour and ensuring safeguarding, which may lead to restricted use during the day. However, we are committed to working with schools to find solutions that ensure pupils can access toilets when needed.” Caerphilly council said toilet regulations were made by schools, adding it recommended parents discuss any issues with their child’s school directly by following the complaints policy. Russia signals it’s ready to go to war with West to protect vital shadow fleet Russia signals it’s ready to go to war with West to protect vital shadow fleet On the bridge of the Jaguar, the ship radio crackles into life. “This is [an] Estonian warship,” says a voice speaking in English. “Follow my instructions. Alter your course to 105 immediately.” So begins the most nerve-wracking confrontation with a Russian shadow fleet vessel since the start of the war. “We are met by helicopters,” says a voice speaking in Russian on board the Jaguar, a 20-year-old tanker en route back to Russia from the Indian port of Sikka, where it had likely deposited a sanctions-busting cargo of oil. In the video taken from the bridge, Hindi-speaking crew members worriedly report that a “military vessel” is also heading towards the stern of the ship. The cause of the Jaguar’s troubles lay in its lack of an international flag, a prerequisite for maritime navigation and the surest legal ground for a boarding operation. Days earlier, it had taken down a Gabonese standard, shortly before the ship was sanctioned by the ***. The clip published online by Margarita Simonyan, the chief of state-owned RT, formerly Russia Today, has been edited to make the timeline of events unclear. But what is known is that the Jaguar refused the order of the Estonian navy – and ploughed on towards its destination, the Russian port Primorsk. An Estonian patrol vessel, EML Raju, aborted its plan to board the far-larger craft and carry out an inspection. Had it followed through, the situation might have spiralled because also visible in the clip is the arrival of a Russian Su-35 fighter jet – the first time Moscow has sent military forces to protect the rusty fleet it relies on to fund its war effort. Elisabeth Braw, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, a Washington-based think tank, said: “Russia has crossed the Rubicon now. It is showing that the shadow fleet is important enough that it’s willing to publicly admit that it is linked to the government.” During the May 13 confrontation, the Russian jet entered Estonian airspace for around a minute. It was met swiftly by Portuguese F-16s from the Nato air policing mission. But the incident is rippling alarm across the West and inviting questions over just how far its relatively sparse naval forces can challenge the fleet of uninsured tankers that criss-cross its seas every day. Gintautas Paluckas, the Lithuanian prime minister, said that while Russia’s military protection of Baltic Sea tankers revealed nothing we “couldn’t or shouldn’t have known”, it showed that “the risk of serious escalation is increasing with every step”. At least half of the seaborne oil sold by Russia is carried on its shadow fleet, providing a huge chunk of the £740 billion that Moscow has earned from fossil fuel exports since February 2022. The flow, however, has lately been disrupted by western sanctions. Some 706 vessels have now been sanctioned across the EU, *** and US, according to research by shipping journal Lloyds List, which is around ten per cent of the total tanker fleet at sea. The share of Russian oil exported by the shadow fleet is falling, down to 53 per cent in April, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, a Helsinki-based think tank. On April 11, Estonia detained the Kiwala, another shadow fleet vessel flying without a flag. On Christmas day, Finnish commandos boarded the Eagle-S, suspected of severing under-sea cables. In response, the Kremlin is signalling that it is ready to fight for the smooth passage of its ****** gold. Dmitry Peskov, its chief spokesman, said the deployment of an Su-35 showed Russia was ready to respond “harshly” and warned that “all measures” could be taken to prevent what he called piracy. Nikolai Patrushev, a senior Putin aide, warned: “Hotheads in London and Brussels need to understand this clearly.” In mid-April, Russia’s Baltic Fleet carried out a series of drills explicitly showcasing its ability to prevent the boarding of civilian ships. Eleven warships and a kilo-class submarine took part, alongside fighter jets. The coastal states are “winning” in their efforts to curtail the shadow fleet because they have “clearly rattled Russia”, according to Ms Braw. But Russia’s military deployment is now “causing concern, simply because they have no way of knowing how any incident will develop”. Estonia’s navy is formed from just eight ships. It was outmatched on May 13, Juri Saska, the former commander, told news outlet ERR. The boarding operation was called off because it was deemed “unreasonable or unfeasible”, he said, adding: “The navy doesn’t have the kind of equipped, armed vessels needed to carry out a forced operation like this.” Sidharth Kaushal, a research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, a London-based think tank, said Moscow lacks the naval strength to ******* every one of its shadow fleet vessels. However, it is likely to intervene in situations where a new threshold is set. Estonia’s interdictions of the two Russian shadow fleet vessels have come in the waters of its Economic Exclusion Zone (EEZ), which stretches 200 miles off the coast and provides sovereign rights to exploration and maritime conversation. Any serious effort to interfere with passage through such waters would pose a serious problem for Moscow. Hanno Pevkur, Estonia’s defence minister, has called for all sanctioned ships to be barred from entering EEZ waters, as they are blocked from European ports. But this is considered a non-starter because it would unravel the international principle of freedom of navigation. Estonian forces originally sought to board the Jaguar tanker using a patrol vessel – Maritime Optima Kestutis Budrys, the Lithuanian foreign minister, believes that the West should at least tighten the system. He has also called for Nato to expand its Baltic Sentry programme from protecting undersea infrastructure to countering the shadow fleet. Margus Tsahkna, the Estonian foreign minister, told The Telegraph: “Controlling the shadow fleet is not just about maritime security – it’s about striking the core of the fuel of Russia’s military operations.” If Russia wants to step up its military protection of the shadow fleet, it has several options, according to Mr Kaushal. Its vessels could turn on their firing radar, the last step before opening fire. They could seek to block boarding operations, or jam them electronically. Western ships might also be detained on entering Russian waters. One Greek vessel was briefly held when it did so on a pre-approved route shortly after the Jaguar incident, although the circumstances there remain unclear. Between flagless vessels, the entry of the Russian military and growing western resolve, the sea’s cargo routes have rarely been so dangerous. And Tom Sharpe, a former Royal Navy officer, thinks the problem is not going away any time soon. He said: “This is such a difficult problem, given the size of the ocean, the number of warships we don’t have, the number of dark fleet ships they do have, and the fact that we insist on playing by the rules.” Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. Gabe Newell’s brain-computer interface startup to reveal first chips later this year Gabe Newell’s brain-computer interface startup to reveal first chips later this year Starfish Neuroscience, a startup co-founded by Valve CEO Gabe Newell, has published an article revealing the first details of its brain-computer interface (BCI) chip. The firm proposes a “new class of minimally-invasive, distributed neural interfaces that enable simultaneous access to multiple brain regions.” Moreover, a Starfish BCI could be the first fully wireless, battery-free implant available, if all goes to plan. According to its blog, the startup’s first chips are expected to arrive “in late 2025.” Perhaps the relationship with Newell means related tech will eventually find its way into gaming headsets and controllers. (Image credit: Starfish Neuroscience) In its report on the Starfish BCI news, The Verge notes that Newell’s fascination with BCIs began over 10 years ago, and that Valve once considered adding earlobe monitors to its VR headset products. As recently as 2019, Valve also publicly explored BCIs for gaming. Later the same year, Newell incorporated Starfish Neuroscience, and we are now seeing the first fruits as it emerges from stealth. You may like In its new blog post, Starfish says its BCI has the opportunity to do well thanks to two key features, its minimal size and the eschewing of built-in battery power. In regular use, the Starfish processor will consume just 1.1mW, it says. That contrasts with the Neuralink N1, which uses around 6mW. Low power: 1.1 mW total power consumption during normal recording Physically small: 2 x 4mm (0.3mm pitch BGA) Capable of both recording (spikes and LFP) & stimulation (biphasic pulses) 32 electrode sites, 16 simultaneous recording channels at 18.75kHz 1 current source for stimulating on arbitrary pairs of electrodes Onboard impedance monitoring and stim voltage transient measurement Digital onboard data processing and spike detection allows the device to operate via low-bandwidth wireless interfaces. Fabricated in TSMC 55nm process The startup also thinks that its smaller, lower power BCI implant(s) may work best connected to multiple parts of the brain simultaneously. For use in medical therapy, this multi-zone methodology could address human brain issues which affect several areas of the brain, like Parkinson’s disease. Starfish isn’t so bold as to think it can go it alone with its new processor and BCI system. Rather, its blog floats the idea of collaborators on wireless power delivery and communication, and on custom implanted neural interfaces. It also admits “there is tons of work yet to be done here,” and is looking for employees, as well as partners, to boost its fortunes. School bus attack caught in tensions between Pakistan and India School bus attack caught in tensions between Pakistan and India Azadeh Moshiri Pakistan Correspondent Anadolu via Getty Images Forty schoolchildren were on the bus which exploded in Balochistan “When I heard the attack happened, the ground fell from beneath my feet. All the parents started running towards the bus, no-one could understand what was going on,” Nasir Mehmood, a sergeant in Pakistan’s army tells us. Nasir and I are in the city of Quetta, sitting in the waiting room of the largest military hospital in the province of Balochistan. His 14-year-old son Mohammad Ahmad told him he was flung across the army school bus in a bombing in Khuzdar, a few hours’ drive away. The bus was carrying around 40 schoolchildren when it exploded at about 07:40 local time (02:40 GMT) on Wednesday. Nasir Mehmood, whose son was injured in the attack on an army school bus in Khuzdar “I reached the hospital, and there were screams of children everywhere, it was the only thing you could hear,” Nasir said. “My eyes just kept searching for my son.” Only the most serious cases were airlifted to the Combined Military Hospital. The military have said the death toll has now risen to eight, with six children killed and dozens injured. No group has admitted carrying out the attack. It is rare for foreign journalists to be allowed to enter the province, south-west of Pakistan, let alone a hospital on the army’s compound. The military said they wanted international media to witness the impact of the attack themselves. Pakistan alleges India is linked to the attack, though there is no independent evidence – and it is a claim Delhi firmly denies. India and Pakistan are in the midst of a fragile ceasefire, after a two-week conflict that was their most significant one in decades. It saw them exchange drone attacks, missiles and artillery fire, and left dozens of casualties. This attack in Balochistan is now in the middle of the tensions, with news channels broadcasting pictures of the children who were killed, most of them girls between the ages of 12 and 16, alongside accusations of an “Indian terror campaign”. Images of scrapped metal, children’s shoes and abandoned backpacks strewn along the scene highlight the tragedy. A student being treated in the Combined Military Hospital in Quetta As we walked through the intensive care unit, some children lay unconscious on their beds, others thrashed in pain. One young girl kept calling out for her mother as nurses tried to calm her. Doctors told us several children were in critical condition, having suffered extensive trauma, burns and fractured bones. The night before we arrived, another child had died. Pakistan’s Minister of Information, Attaullah Tarar, says there is a history of Indian proxies operating in Balochistan. In turn, India says that Pakistan has been harbouring militants who wage attacks on Indian-administered Kashmir for years. The killing of 26 people in April, most of them tourists in Pahalgam, sparked the most recent conflict. Pakistan has called for an open investigation led by an independent party. However, Tarar denied that such an investigation was necessary in Balochistan. “Pahalgam was a one-off incident,” he told us. “We are the victims in this case. We have been suffering. There is a history. We have evidence. So what can I say?” When we asked him what that evidence was, he once again pointed to claims of a history of attacks. He gave us no other details of India’s alleged involvement in this attack. A Pakistani soldier – part of the military convoy which escorted the BBC team in Quetta A turbulent province Later, an officer drove us through Quetta’s roads in a bus flanked by soldiers carrying rifles and ammunition hanging from their pockets. Balochistan has experienced decades of militant attacks linked to a nationalist insurgency. It is home to several groups which accuse the government of exploiting its natural resources. In March, some 21 people, most of them off-duty security personnel, were killed during a train siege in Balochistan’s remote Sibi district. That attack was carried out by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). Pakistan, as well as several Western countries, including the *** and US, have designated the BLA as a terrorist organisation. As the military responds to the insurgency, activists in Balochistan accuse Pakistan’s security forces of human rights violations. They say thousands of ethnic Baloch people have been disappeared in the last two decades, and are allegedly detained without due legal process. The minister of information told us the government believed “faceless courts” might be needed in the province, hiding the identities of the judges and prosecutors in terror cases. Tarar said the courts often fail to convict the accused, because of a fear of retribution from militant groups. In a press conference, the military spokesperson, Lt Gen Chaudhry, said the school bus attack “had nothing to do with the Baloch identity, rather it was just India’s provocation”. The government says it is raising the issue “across diplomatic channels” around the world. The impact on the ceasefire and on the prospect of talks between India and Pakistan remains to be seen. Source: Investing.com The holiday-shortened week ahead is expected to be an eventful one as investors continue to assess the outlook for the economy, inflation, interest rates and corporate earnings amid President Trump’s trade war. U.S. markets will be closed Monday for the Memorial Day holiday. Most important on the economic calendar will be Friday’s core PCE price index, which is the Fed’s favorite inflation gauge. That will be accompanied by the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s May FOMC meeting. This could give some insight into the future path of interest rates. Regardless of which direction the market goes, below I highlight one stock likely to be in demand and another which could see fresh downside. Remember though, my timeframe is just for the week ahead, Monday, May 26 – Friday, May 30. Stock to Buy: Nvidia Nvidia appears positioned for yet another impressive earnings report as the company continues to capitalize on the booming demand for AI infrastructure. Results for the first quarter are due after the market closes on Wednesday at 4:20PM ET. A call with CEO Jensen Huang is set for 5:00PM ET. Market participants expect a sizable swing in NVDA shares following the print, with a possible implied move of about 7% in either direction, as per the options market. Source: Investing.com Analysts expect the chipmaker to report earnings of $0.73 per share for the quarter ended April 27, representing a 20% year-over-year increase. Revenue is projected to surge 66% to $43.2 billion, demonstrating the company’s continued dominance in the AI chip market. The post-earnings call will likely focus on two critical areas that could serve as positive catalysts for the stock. First, investors will be closely monitoring Huang’s commentary regarding AI chip demand. Recent reports from cloud giants suggest AI investment remains robust, potentially supporting continued strong demand for Nvidia’s products. Second, the market will seek clarity on production issues that have constrained supply in recent quarters. Any indication that manufacturing bottlenecks are easing could signal even stronger growth ahead as Nvidia works to fulfill its substantial order backlog. Adding to the positive outlook, Reuters reported Saturday that Nvidia will begin production of a new, lower-level AI chip designed specifically for the China market in June. This move represents a strategic response to export restrictions imposed by the Trump administration earlier this year, which blocked the company from shipping its H20 processor to ******** customers. The new chip could help Nvidia maintain access to the important ******** market while complying with U.S. export controls. Source: Investing.com NVDA stock ended Friday’s session at $131.29, roughly 14% below its record high of $153.13 reached on January 7. At current levels, Nvidia has a market cap of $3.2 trillion, making it the second-most valuable company trading on the U.S. stock exchange – behind Microsoft (NASDAQ:). The shares are down 2% in 2025 after a 171% gain in 2024. Stock to Sell: Kohl’s Kohl’s, on the other hand, is a stock to avoid this week as it faces a challenging retail landscape. The department store chain is grappling with operational inefficiencies and weakening consumer demand, particularly for discretionary items. The brick-and-mortar retailer, which operates over 1,100 stores across the U.S., is scheduled to release its first quarter earnings before the U.S. market opens on Thursday at 7:00AM ET. According to the options market, traders are pricing in a massive swing of 14.6% in either direction for KSS stock following the print. Source: InvestingPro Wall Street expects Kohl’s to post a loss of -$0.46 per share, a significant decline from last year’s loss of -$0.24 per share, with revenue projected to drop 11.5% annually to $2.99 billion. Several fundamental issues are weighing on Kohl’s (NYSE:) performance. The company has become increasingly reliant on discounting to drive store traffic, a strategy that continues to erode profit margins in an already low-margin business. This promotional activity suggests underlying weakness in consumer demand for the retailer’s merchandise assortment. Operational inefficiencies compound these market challenges, with the company facing inventory management issues and store productivity concerns. Unlike specialty retailers that have aggressively rationalized their store bases, Kohl’s continues to maintain a large physical footprint that may be increasingly difficult to justify given shifting shopping patterns. Faced with a worsening economic backdrop and increasing competition from online retailers, Kohl’s lacks a clear catalyst for a turnaround. Source: Investing.com KSS stock –which fell to the lowest level since 1997 last month at $6.04– closed at $7.48 on Friday. Shares have plummeted 46.7% year-to-date, reflecting mounting investor concerns about Kohl’s long-term prospects as it struggles to adapt to the evolving retail landscape. It should be noted that Kohl’s has an InvestingPro Financial Health Score of 1.96, tagged as merely ‘FAIR’, highlighting the company’s difficulty in attracting customers and driving sales. Yes, There Was A Media Scandal In 2024. No, It Wasn’t About Joe Biden. Yes, There Was A Media Scandal In 2024. No, It Wasn’t About Joe Biden. President Donald Trump prepares to sign executive orders in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington on May 23, 2025. Mandel Ngan /AFP via Getty Images WASHINGTON — Early on in Donald Trump’s first term, a favorite riposte from right-wing accounts on social media to real and perceived cultural excesses from “The Left” was simply: “This is how we got Trump.” Eight years later, we’re getting another round of this same clever retort, only this time the culprits are not progressive activists, but reporters who covered the Joe Biden White House. Apparently, we collectively conspired with Biden family members and aides to hide his worsening physical and mental condition from America. It’s an amazing assertion, given that polls in early 2024 found that some 80% of Americans thought that Biden was too old to be president. Focus group participants said they were shocked he was even running again. It turns out that people drew their own conclusions from watching his halting public speeches and videos of his increasingly noticeable old-man’s shuffle. This conspiracy, clearly, failed miserably pretty much from the get-go. People who are surprised that the Democratic establishment stuck with Biden as long as it did do not understand presidential campaigns. The single biggest factor that determines an election is whether the candidate is already the sitting president. Incumbency offers tremendous advantages, from fundraising to the imagery of that big, blue-and-white 747 swooping in. Had Biden announced in late 2022 or early 2023 that he would not run again, those advantages would have instantly evaporated for Democrats. Do people believe that an open field primary season would have produced a candidate who would have beaten Trump? The great irony is that there absolutely was malfeasance by the media in its coverage of the 2024 presidential campaign — not in how it covered the sitting president, but in how it covered the challenger. Donald Trump assaulted the Constitution he had sworn to defend after he lost reelection in 2020. He invited his followers to Washington long after the votes had been counted, whipped them up into an angry mob and then sicced them on his own vice president and Congress to coerce them into awarding him a second term. It was the closest America has come to losing our democracy since the first year of the Civil War. Yet within weeks of Jan. 6, 2021, reporters began making the trek to Mar-a-Lago to interview him and somehow managed to file stories that elided the day entirely. I recall listening to a podcast interview with one who was asked how Trump had explained his behavior on Jan. 6, and the reporter replied that the topic had not come up. I was and remain dumbfounded by that. As a young reporter, I used to cover criminals full time. The idea of agreeing to a jailhouse interview of a suspect with the understanding that I would not detail the charges against him in the story never would have occurred to me. Even if it had, my editors never would have tolerated such an arrangement. And yet by late spring 2022, that is precisely what started happening. The political press corps began normalizing the hell out of Donald Trump. They downplayed or flat-out ignored the fundamental violence he had committed against our democracy in their coverage in return for the possibility of an interview or even just anonymous quotes from top advisers. (Because, really, what kind of reporter are you if can’t publish a few hours ahead of time whether Trump is going to call Gov. Ron DeSantis “Meatball Ron” or “**** Ron” in his rally speech?) Just as one example: Trump, unlike every other modern presidential nominee, refused to take a traveling press pool with him. Instead, he and his staff handpicked reporters for each trip. You can probably guess which reporters were invited and which ones weren’t. There was an implicit understanding that access to the Republican nominee meant you would not portray him as a fundamental, proven threat to American democracy. Which, of course, he was back then, and which he continues to prove himself to be now on a near-daily basis. I don’t mean to overstate the importance of the media’s role in Trump’s return. With the exponential growth of niche news outlets, a great number of them little more than propaganda shops bankrolled by one anti-democratic billionaire or another, it is easy for those so inclined to choose information sources guaranteed not to upset their existing worldviews. That said, repetition across a broad swath of the media matters. If reminders of Trump’s actions leading up to and on Jan. 6 had been repeated as frequently as, say, Hillary Clinton’s decision to use a private email server, who knows what might have happened. A non coup-attempting, pro-democracy nominee could well have emerged from the Republican primary. In the end, though, in a market economy, the customer is always right. And here, the customer was the voter who watched Jan. 6 unfold live on television, watched as Trump’s mob attacked police officers in his name, watched as prosecutors laid out a case for why what he did broke the law and then decided that all of that was less bad than Biden’s inability to control grocery prices. The sad truth is that had inflation come back down close to 3% in late 2022, rather than in mid-2023, Joe Biden would likely be in his second term right now. For all the Sturm und Drang about his mental deterioration, he managed to pull the country out of a pandemic and, along with Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, avoided a recession, delivering a solid economy with low unemployment and decent growth. He brought massive, long-needed investments in high-tech industry and low-tech roads and bridges. He pulled NATO together to stand against the most egregious war of conquest since 1939. Apart from the Afghanistan withdrawal, which actually happened before this deterioration, what bad decisions did he make because of his age? While it’s absolutely correct that he had become terrible at the public performance part of the job — although he was never really good at that — there seems to be little evidence that his age affected his ability to analyze facts and make sound choices. But inflation didn’t come down soon enough, and now we have a president who is almost as old as Biden, but with the temperament of a toddler and the mores of an 11-year-old boy from the “Lord of the Flies” island. The political media’s efforts to normalize him notwithstanding, it was plain from all of Trump’s open talk about revenge and his vows to grab extra-constitutional power that America was risking a slide into autocracy if voters returned him to the White House. An even sadder truth is that, faced with a choice between democracy and the promise of cheaper Doritos, America went with the Doritos. We were never going to get the latter, and, as is becoming clearer by the day, we’ll be lucky to get through this with some semblance of the former. 3 new PlayStation Plus games to play this weekend (May 23-25) 3 new PlayStation Plus games to play this weekend (May 23-25) There’s nothing better than an extended weekend to treat yourself to some guilt-free gaming time. Memorial Day means a ton of us get a whole extra day to chill out and explore the best games on PlayStation Plus, which just so happen to have added a huge chunk of titles. We’ve got multiple dangerous open world games, RPGs, and more to pick from, making this one of the hardest weeks I’ve had in narrowing down my recommendations to just three. That’s a great problem to have and only means you will easily find a game that clicks with you. Even though we’ve got a three-day weekend, there’s no time to waste, so here are the three best new PlayStation Plus games you need to be playing. Sand Land Akira Toriyama is most famous for creating the Dragon Ball universe, but that wasn’t his only creation. Sand Land was one of his last projects, but has that trademark Toriyama look and feel. This is an open world RPG where you play as the Fiend Prince Beelzebub on a big adventure in search of the Legendary Spring in the desert world of Sand Land. Don’t expect huge energy beams and cosmic-level clashes here. The majority of your time will be spent piloting and fighting inside all sorts of charming and creative vehicles. You can even collect resources to build and customize your own vehicles to suit your needs. Plus, since this game covers the relatively short story, you can jump right in and understand exactly what’s going on. Sand Land is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Legends of the Zone Trilogy – Enhanced Edition [Hidden Content] All of us PlayStation fans still can’t get our hands on Stalker 2 just yet, but we can at least be prepared when it eventually does come to PS5 with the brand new bundle of the first three games fully remastered. If you’re unfamiliar with the franchise, you’re exactly who this package is made for. The Stalker games invite you to investigate the deadly Zone, an alternate version of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. These games are meant to be hardcore and incredibly unforgiving. At the same time, the systems and AI are such that every situation is unique. You won’t hear any two people’s experiences mirror each other in this game. If you can put yourselves into your character’s shoes and really roleplay, this survival FPS trilogy will easily become your next obsession. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Legends of the Zone Trilogy is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Battle Engine Aquila Anyone who has been reading these recommendations regularly knows I can’t help but include a classic game whenever possible. This week, there was only one to pick from, but I was instantly intrigued because it has to be one of the very few remaining PS2 games I’d never heard of. Battle Engine Aquila is a vehicular combat game where you pilot the titular mech in massive battles. Your Battle Engine can swap between an airborne and land mode to trade off more mobility and speed for stronger weaponry. You can choose between multiple Engine types for each mission, each of which is ranked to encourage you to replay them for a better score. There’s not much story going on in the game itself, so just enjoy this one for the technical combat and novelty. Battle Engine Aquila is available now on PS5 and PC. Blackmailers, spys, and cheaters beware: Signal cuts off Microsoft screengrab feature Blackmailers, spys, and cheaters beware: Signal cuts off Microsoft screengrab feature Signal, the popular privacy-centric messaging app, has rolled out a significant update to its Windows 11 desktop client, called “Screen Security” to combat Microsoft’s AI-powered Recall tool from capturing screenshots of users’ private conversation. This move underscores Signals stance on user privacy, following recent publicity from the Trump Administration and attention drawn to how the app is used. According to Bleeping Computer, the Screen Security feature is turned on by default in Windows 11. Understanding Microsoft’s Recall feature Microsoft Recall, recently launched on Copilot+ PCs, is an AI-driven tool that periodically captures screenshots of a person’s desktop to create a searchable timeline of past activities. While intended to enhance productivity by allowing people to revisit previous tasks, Recall has sparked privacy concerns due to its broad access to on-screen content, including sensitive information from various applications. Notably, Recall lacks an API that would enable developers to exclude their applications from being captured, leaving privacy-focused apples like Signal vulnerable to unintended data exposure. Provided by Microsoft PR / Microsoft.com Signals proactive privacy measure In response, Signal’s latest update employs Digital Rights Management (DRM) techniques – similar to those used by streaming services like Netflix or Hulu – to block screen capture attempts. According to Laurent Giret at Thurrott.com, when the Screen Security feature is enabled, any attempt to take a screenshot of the Signal app results in a blank image, effectively shielding conversations from being recorded by Recall or other screenshot tools. This feature is activated by default on Windows 11 devices but can be disabled by people who require compatibility with certain accessibility tools. Signal acknowledges that while this measure may interfere with functionalities like screen readers, the lack of granular control over Recalls operations left them with limited options. As Signal developer Joshua Lund stated, “Microsoft has simply given us no other option” reports ArsTechnica. Are there broader implications? Signals action highlights a growing tension between privacy and system-level AI features. The implementation of Recall without adequate opt-out mechanisms raises questions about the balance between innovation and privacy rights. By taking matters into its own hands, Signal sets a precedent for other applications to prioritize user data protection, potentially prompting Microsoft to reconsider the design and permissions associated with Recall. As AI continues to integrate deeper into the operating systems of devices, the need for transparent and user-controlled privacy settings becomes increasingly critical. Signal’s update serves as a reminder that safeguarding user privacy requires vigilant and proactive measure, especially when system-level features may inadvertently compromise sensitive information. For people concerned about the implications of Microsoft’s recall feature, Signals latest update offers a layer of protection, refining the apps reputation in the secure communication space. We have a solid list of Signal tips & tricks should you decide to give the app a try. The Switch 2’s most important launch game isn’t Mario Kart World The Switch 2’s most important launch game isn’t Mario Kart World On June 5, the Nintendo Switch 2 will finally grace us with its presence. Nintendo is rolling out the big guns for the big day too, as it will launch the system with Mario Kart World. The racing game is all but assured to be a hit, giving the console a Breath of the Wild-like water cooler game that everyone will be playing at the same time. A lot is riding on that one game, as it has the burden of being the Switch 2’s all-important killer app. If it fails to move millions of units in its first month, Nintendo might have to rethink its whole strategy for its new generation. While those are some high stakes, they’re ones that Mario Kart World will realistically clear without issue. With that in mind, there’s another Switch 2 launch game coming on June 5 that’s just as important, if not more so, from my perspective. That would be Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition. While it won’t be crucial to Nintendo’s bottom line, it’s the first real test of the hardware, which looks to make a name for itself in a much more crowded portable landscape than the one the original Switch launched in. Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is essentially a “game of the year” version for the 2020 game, one that played an instrumental tole in the PS5 and Xbox Series X’s launch that same year. It doesn’t just contain the base game and its critically beloved Phantom Liberty DLC, but it also adds some mouse and motion control support built to take advantage of the newly redesigned Joy-cons. It is a key benchmark game for a device like the Nintendo Switch 2 in every conceivable way. First, there’s the new control features. Ever since the Wii era, Nintendo has struggled to get third-party developers to embrace its wackiest ideas. Games like Red Steel gave the Wiimote the old college try in that era, but it was ultimately up to Nintendo to support motion controls. The Switch faced similar challenges, as few third-party studios played around with the Joy-cons’ IR sensors during the console’s eight year lifespan. CD Projekt Red is going all out for Cyberpunk 2077 and that makes it a perfect guinea pig. Will those features excite players enough to convince others to follow suit? Or will they quickly reveal the controls to be another gimmick that’s best left to Nintendo? Considering that Mario Kart World has fairly straightforward controls, this will be the launch day game to prove Nintendo’s sales pitch. That’s a small test compared to the much ******* one Nintendo faces here. Cyberpunk 2077 is a very technically demanding game. It famously launched in a disaster state on PS4 and Xbox One in 2020, killing its reputation for years before CD Projekt Red could retake the narrative. It has since accomplished just that with regular updates that have stabilized the sprawling RPG and made it easier to appreciate the density of detail in it. It runs great on PC and current-gen consoles, but the Switch 2 is a big test. How well it runs there is going to give us our first taste of how capable the hardware is. We already know that CD Projekt Red is making some concessions to make it work, as its expected to run at about 40 frames per second even in performance mode, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be able to impress. This is the game that feels like it’ll show off features like the 4K dock and VRR-supporting display the most. That’s crucial for Nintendo even if this isn’t it’s own game. Were the Switch 2 the only portable device of its kind, it would have a lot of flexibility. Getting Cyberpunk 2077 to run at all would feel like a miracle, even at 30fps. Of course, the elephant hanging around launch day is that it isn’t the only handheld console out there. Devices like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally now exist and are capable of running high-end PC games. I’ve played Cyberpunk 2077 on my Steam Deck plenty of times. It struggled to hit a consistent framerate, but I could get it to a playable state with enough system-level tweaking. CD For Nintendo, it won’t be enough to prove that big games can run on its hardware; it has to prove that they run better on Switch 2 than its competitors. Being able to output Cyberpunk 2077 to a TV in 4K without buying a third-party dock already gives the console a leg up, as does its unique controls, but it will need to pass some basic performance tests to convince gaming audiences who don’t care as much about Nintendo’s first party output that the Switch 2 is a viable alternative to something like the Steam Deck. If it can’t, it’s going to reinforce the idea that Nintendo’s system still isn’t a welcoming home base for hardcore players. The good news is that Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2 doesn’t seem like it will disappoint. When I demoed it in April, I was astounded that it ran so well on the hardware while retaining such a high density of detail. It held up significantly better than Split Fiction, which suffers from very compressed visuals. I only experienced Cyberpunk on a big TV screen too. I imagine it will look far superior on a small screen where any flaws will be less noticeable. If the final version can stick the landing, Nintendo will have the kind of launch game that gets YouTube populated with impressive comparison videos that will sell the system to those who are on the fence about picking one up instead of a portable PC. That’s the exact win Nintendo needs on day one. Its future may just be in Projekt CD Red’s hands now. The Nintendo Switch 2 and Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition launch on June 5.
