  2. Hayden Young: Injured Fremantle Dockers star felt better than he was expecting in return to on-field running Hayden Young: Injured Fremantle Dockers star felt better than he was expecting in return to on-field running Fremantle star Hayden Young says his body feels better than expected after returning to on-field running in a significant milestone in his bid to get back into the AFL side in the lead-in to finals. Young hit the training track for a jog on Tuesday for the first time since undergoing surgery on his right hamstring earlier this month. It was a key marker for the gun midfielder as he eyes a late-season comeback, with the club listing his estimated return date as 8-9 weeks away. That would put the 24-year-old in the frame to potentially feature in the final month of the home-and-away campaign. Young said he was buoyed by how he had pulled up after ticking off the box to get back moving. “I felt really good,” Young said on 96FM. “It’s a good little progression, and hopefully, from now we can just get moving a bit quicker. “It actually felt better than I was expecting, so I’m really pleased.” Camera IconYoung running on Tuesday. Credit: Kelsey Reid/The West *********** Young reached a speed of just under 15 km/h – close to half of his maximum running pace of 30 km/h – during his session at Cockburn. Last year’s third-place Doig Medal finisher said he was firmly focused on remaining diligent in his rehab and not pushing the boundaries in a patient approach to getting back to full health in the wake of multiple hamstring setbacks this year. “You do get to a certain speed where you’re like, ‘Oh, yeah, I can feel my hammy a little bit now’,” he said. “You sort of work within that zone where you want to push it a little bit, but you don’t want to be feeling any pain or discomfort.” Young will again watch from the sidelines as Fremantle eye a third straight win this week, with the high-flying Suns awaiting in a testing road assignment at People First Stadium. Gold Coast are unbeaten in home fixtures this year, comprised of two matches at their Carrara base and two at their home-away-from-home at Darwin’s TIO Stadium. “They’re hard to beat up there on the Gold Coast,” Young said. “The conditions are sometimes tricky and they play well at home and it’s a big travel trip for us. “But two weeks ago, we went to GWS and won at a place where we’d never won before, so we can take a bit of confidence from that. “We’re up up for the challenge leading into the bye. You always want to have good win leading into the bye, so we’re fired up and ready to go and hopefully we can come home with four points.” Source link #Hayden #Young #Injured #Fremantle #Dockers #star #felt #expecting #return #onfield #running Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  7. Judge in Diego Maradona case accused of behaving like an ‘actress’ Judge in Diego Maradona case accused of behaving like an ‘actress’ Getty Images Diego Maradona pictured months before his death in 2020 at the age 60 A judge in Argentina has stood down from the trial of Diego Maradona’s medical staff after being criticised for taking part in a documentary about the case. Seven members of the legendary footballer’s medical team have been charged with negligent ********* relating to his death in 2020. They deny the allegations. Prosecutor Patricio Ferrari accused Judge Julieta Makintach of behaving “like an actress and not a judge”. She was one of three judges in the case which has been adjourned. A decision about whether a new trial will be ordered will be made on Thursday. Maradona had been recovering at his home in Buenos Aires from surgery on a brain blood clot in November 2020 when he died of a heart attack, aged 60. Prosecutors allege his death could have been avoided and describe the care given as “reckless, deficient and unprecedented”. The medical team on trial includes a neurosurgeon, a doctor and a night nurse. They claim the football star refused further treatment and should have stayed at home for longer after his operation. If convicted, they face between eight and 25 years in prison. The long-awaited trial began on 11 March and was expected to last until July however its future has been thrown into doubt. Judge Makintach said she had “no choice” but to excuse herself from the case. AFP via Getty Images Judge Julieta Makintach had denied authorising filming inside the Buenos Aires court but her credibility was questioned after footage from a trailer emerged It is a violation of court rules for unauthorised filming to take place. As a trailer for the documentary series Divine Justice was played in court, defence lawyer Rodolfo Baque shouted “trash!” at Judge Makintach. Maradona’s daughter Gianinna and his former partner Veronica Ojeda both cried after seeing the footage. Ms Ojeda’s lawyer Mario Baudry said there was a feeling that the case had now been “compromised” and it was “healthiest to start over from scratch”. The court will decide whether the trial can continue with a new judge or whether it will have to start again from the beginning. In July, an eighth member of Maradona’s medical team will face a separate trial by jury. 8. Capcom reveals its PC game sales overshadow console, and it’s only growing Capcom reveals its PC game sales overshadow console, and it’s only growing dveio4d ago @InUrFox What does “putting everywhere” actually mean? This book has so many pages. • Xbox was dying in revenue • Regulators put a 10 year deal on CoD • Microsoft had to give away the streaming • Spencer himself only offered 3 yrs initially And most importantly • Again, Xbox was dying in revenue Xbox have the benefit of their actual financial situation giving regulators and courts the impression they release games everywhere, what they actually do. But for reasons they can’t be proven guilty of anything in court. I’m not judging, it’s just what it is. IF the Series generation would have developed differently and was much more successful, I don’t hesitate any second to believe in what Spencer had originally planned to do: • Make everything Xbox exclusive • We today know that Spencer had also approached *****, From Software, CD Project, Nintendo, and even Valve was on their list of buyouts. MS are playing a card here everyone knows why they are doing it. Putting Doom “everywhere”, which even was it already before it got bought, ain’t a MS thing. It would had hurt them in many ways if they’d put it exclusively to Xbox. But, no matter what – it is what it is. Xbox bought themselves back into the game. And I think many people just don’t have very fond feelings towards this behaviour, wether on corporate nor private levels. Let’s see how they’ll run with it. In 2030, but most importantly after regulations will have expired we will learn better. 9. ‘Unfinished business’: Socceroos star seals Reds return ‘Unfinished business’: Socceroos star seals Reds return Craig Goodwin will return to his beloved Adelaide United in a major boost for the Socceroos star and the A-League Men outfit. Goodwin links up with the Reds on a three-year deal after two seasons in the Saudi Pro League. The 33-year-old winger was off-contract at now-relegated Al Wehda, having scored 12 goals and 10 assists in 49 appearances. Wednesday’s announcement comes after Adelaide United appointed Brazilian-born Airton Andrioli to replace Carl Veart as head coach earlier in the week. Andrioli will be at the helm on a two-year deal, following the Reds’ short-lived finals campaign. Adelaide had snuck into the top six after Sydney FC fumbled their chance, before suffering an elimination final loss to Western United. Goodwin says his return to Adelaide for a fourth stint was largely driven by “unfinished business”, aiming to pick up where he left off in 2023. He remains in hot form on the international stage, a key figure for the Socceroos as they prepare to face Japan in Perth on June 5 to seal their passage to next year’s World Cup. “I’m just really excited to be back home at the club I love the most. There’s still unfinished business – I want to win another championship, and another Australia Cup here,” Goodwin said in a club statement. “Nothing means more to me than bringing success to Adelaide United. “Playing in front of a packed-out Coopers Stadium has always meant the world to me, and I’ll give everything I have to deliver silverware again.” Goodwin is one of Adelaide’s most decorated players, having ended his most recent stint by winning the Johnny Warren medal for his 15-goal, 10-assist effort in 2022/23. The crafty South *********** winger helped secure the club’s 2016 maiden championship after arriving in 2014. In his second stint in 2018, Goodwin’s brace launched the Reds to a 2018 *********** Cup final win. The club’s all-time leading goalscorer, Goodwin has a total of 60 across 168 appearances. Adelaide football boss Marius Zanin said the club always knew Goodwin would come back. “Craig is a true great of our club, and having him back with us is a huge moment for everyone involved,” Zanin said. “We’ve always stayed in contact since he left, knowing deep down that we’d bring him back home eventually. “Now felt like the right time – not just sentimentally, but strategically.” Source link #Unfinished #business #Socceroos #star #seals #Reds #return Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  11. Elon Musk Dumps On Trump’s ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ Elon Musk Dumps On Trump’s ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ President Donald Trump’s point man on cost-cutting criticized the bill enshrining Trump’s domestic policy agenda because it would cost the government trillions of dollars if enacted. Elon Musk, leader of Trump’s “Department of Government Efficiency,” said he was let down by the legislation, which is known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. “I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing,” Musk told CBS News in an interview clip released Tuesday. The legislation would add $3 trillion or more to federal budget deficits over the next decade with tax cuts that are only partially offset by spending reductions. The White House and most other Republicans have insisted, contrary to all budget experts, that the tax cuts will be so good for business that they will juice government revenue and make up the difference. So it’s striking for Musk, a close ally of the president, to dump on the bill. And it’s not like Musk has a problem with questionable budget projections, such as his claims that his DOGE team could find $1 trillion in annual savings by cutting government waste, or that they’ve eliminated $175 billion so far even as real-time federal data shows the government spending more than it did last year by roughly that same amount. Republicans pushed the “big, beautiful bill” through the House last week, but their counterparts in the Senate plan to make changes, meaning both the Senate and the House will have to vote again before the bill can go to the president’s desk. A handful of right-wing House and Senate Republicans have major qualms about the bill’s deficit impact. Adding more to the national debt goes against everything Republicans have said about fiscal responsibility. It’s not clear if those qualms, however, will lead them to actually block the bill. Musk’s team, under Trump’s executive authority, has worked from inside federal agencies, pushing for mass layoffs and other changes. Many of their actions have gotten tied up in federal courts, since it’s supposed to be Congress, not the executive branch, that controls federal spending. The White House has hesitated to send Congress a package of “rescissions” that lawmakers could vote on to codify DOGE’s cuts. In recent weeks, Musk has signaled his intention to step back from his temporary White House role and spend more time at his companies, including Tesla and SpaceX. 12. Q&A with Whale AI’s Jerry Ye Q&A with Whale AI’s Jerry Ye In this photo illustration, the artificial intelligence (AI) apps DeepSeek, ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Copilot, Claude, and Perplexity seen displayed on a smartphone. Sopa Images | Lightrocket | Getty Images This report is from this week’s CNBC’s The China Connection newsletter, which brings you insights and analysis on what’s driving the world’s second-largest economy. Each week, we’ll explore the biggest business stories in China, give a lowdown on market moves and help you set up for the week ahead. Like what you see? You can subscribe here. The big story Hearing about artificial intelligence from ******** businesses paints a very different picture of how the tech can be applied than is commonly understood. After a stint as a data scientist at Meta, Caltech alumnus Jerry Ye returned to China in 2017 at the behest of an investor, with the goal of starting a global AI company. The startup, Whale, sells AI software tools and related hardware to help retailers. It now claims clients such as Starbucks, Xiaomi and Unilever. Last week, Whale announced that it had raised $60 million in a Series C funding round that included Bosch Ventures, Singtel and MDI Ventures. The startup counts Hangzhou as its China headquarters and Singapore as its global base. I caught up with Ye in Beijing this week as he passed through the city, where he has a small team. This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity. What’s the impact of the U.S.-China trade war? We still think there’s a global opportunity even if there are U.S.-China tensions. Business is business. Our customers are global: Procter & Gamble, Watsons, Starbucks. Who will win the AI race? The largest two markets are still the U.S. and China. The application layer will take off in both, in different ways: marketing and sales in China; very, very small vertical sectors in the U.S., such as in transportation or legal. Southeast Asia is more likely to adopt scenarios from the U.S. or China markets. What’s restricting AI development? Advanced semiconductors? For China, we don’t see any shortage in AI computing power. All the cloud [companies] have a lot of training power. A lot of AI companies don’t actually train [models] a lot anymore. Ultimately, on-device chips [often associated with edge computing, or processors built into devices like smartphones, home appliances, etc] are becoming powerful enough to run AI models and can ensure data privacy. In the long run, most of the competition will happen on the edge, instead of at data centers. Where will AI make money for businesses first? Marketing and sales, because they are very close to the money, and the return on investment is easier to calculate. If you adopt AI in marketing and sales over seven days, on the eighth day, you will see results. What does that mean for the future of content? The basic concept of marketing is communication, narrowing the gap between the customer understanding the product and the brand selling the product. We talk a lot about personalization. But traditionally, we didn’t have sufficient content, sufficient power to give each person personalized content. With AI’s richer understanding and algorithms to bridge the content and the customer, the decision-making is faster and easier. Generative AI definitely gives us a lot of opportunities to generate a huge amount of videos. AI also enables us to send unique slices of live-shot photos and videos to social media. This has become the way ads are increasingly produced. But if you use a lot of generative AI, they convey a lot of fake information. Most platforms are mostly anti-generative AI videos. My personal opinion is that real-life videos are still needed. It’s very hard for generative AI to [convey] real emotions, real human touch. How are companies using AI today? Our company services Starbucks in China and Southeast Asia. Each time you purchase a Starbucks coffee, huge amounts of AI are used to make the customer experience better. Right now, consumers can get their coffee order within 5 minutes, 98% of the time. If one location is too busy to handle online orders on top of in-store orders, AI analysis may send those online orders to a different location nearby. How much money is Whale making? What are your costs? Over the last three years, we have grown by about 100% [a year], and for the next two to three years, we will maintain 100% annual growth. We made revenue of 230 million yuan ($31.39 million) last year, and expect 400 million yuan in revenue this year. We have around 500 enterprise customers. We spend about 1 million yuan a month in China on operating costs — outside China, it’s more expensive, so the total is around 3 million yuan a month [36 million yuan a year]. Our biggest challenge is complying with local data privacy and security needs in every region. Which AI large language model is best? Different models have different capabilities. For Claude, they are really good at generating websites, PDFs. Gemini, video. It’s like having PhDs in different domains. For most of our business customers, they don’t want to be fixed into one model. A lot of businesses want to keep their data private. That’s why they use open-source models, deployed in their own data centers. Is there potential for an AI device, such as glasses? The biggest challenge for most hardware is the battery, not the AI itself. Most of the hardware has been here for a long time. Maybe a new cellphone. The most important thing is the application. The application will take over the large margin of the AI. Cloud has 5% to 10% of the margin, then hardware. There’s a huge software layer [of which AI applications] can take 90% to 95% of the margins. What do you think about former Apple designer Jony Ive’s deal with OpenAI? It will be hard. There’s a camera on it. It’s good to have large companies trying different AI. They have more potential to try different things. 17. Chris Hayes Says the Silver Lining in Trump’s Attacks on American Institutions Is That They Have ‘No Choice but to Fight Back’ Chris Hayes Says the Silver Lining in Trump’s Attacks on American Institutions Is That They Have ‘No Choice but to Fight Back’ Chris Hayes opened Tuesday’s episode of his MSNBC show with a bleak look Donald Trump’s latest attacks on “our American birthright of a free and open society,” including against independent universities, real science and the free press. But despite grim recent events, Hayes argued that there is a “real silver lining” — that these institutions are being forced to fight him. Hayes began by talking about Trump’s escalating war on Harvard university, which as Hayes explained, is a campaign to “put Harvard University, nation’s oldest college, out of business.” This most recently includes Trump’s order to cancel all federal contracts with the university, an unprecedented move that was preceded by the equally unprecedented order to cease all foreign student admissions. “They want to rewrite the school’s curriculum in a way that is favorable and deferential to Trump and his worldview. Donald Trump wants the most powerful, legendary institution higher education in this country, arguably in the world, to bend the knee to his whims and become a kind of controlled asset of MAGA. That is the goal here,” Hayes said. Hayes noted Trump’s attacks on other universities, his administration’s increasingly clear opposition to vaccinations, and his attacks on media — which included a shout-out to the fiery speech “60 Minutes” reporter Scott Pelley gave last week to graduating seniors at Wake Forest University. “Pelly, to his great credit, is not cowed, and it’s true that many aren’t. Not every outlet is capitulated to Trump,” Hayes said, adding a little later, “and we’re seeing this type of resistance everywhere, sometimes in sort of unexpected areas. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, I think he’s a pretty conservative guy, as far as I can know. He’s a guy who was initially elevated to the job of Federal Reserve Chair by a guy named Donald Trump in his first term, is fighting the President’s pressure campaign to remove him from his position, calling on the next generation to preserve our democratic institutions again in another weekend commencement speech at Princeton University.” “Here’s the single most important thing for everyone to understand about this ongoing, existential battle to preserve our American birthright of a free and open society,” Hayes continued. “All these institutions and the people that power them, and the vast sources of independent knowledge, production and authority contained within them, that form what is the kind of civil society of America altogether are more powerful than this one petty, addled man, and Donald Trump knows it, and that’s why he wants to end them.” “And the real silver lining here, and there is one, is that Trump’s attacks are so reckless and so baseless and transparent, they have left our independent institutions with no choice but to fight back. Good. We need them.” Watch the whole commentary below: The post Chris Hayes Says the Silver Lining in Trump’s Attacks on American Institutions Is That They Have ‘No Choice but to Fight Back’ | Video appeared first on TheWrap. 19. Richmond believe Dustin Martin would be a ‘great coach’ Richmond believe Dustin Martin would be a ‘great coach’ Richmond legend Dustin Martin has an open invitation to return to the Tigers in any coaching or mentoring role. The AFL’s only triple Norm Smith medallist has recently spent time at Richmond, including stepping into the rooms for former teammate Kamdyn McIntosh’s 200th game a fortnight ago. Adem Yze, in his second year in charge at Punt Rd, joked he had a coach’s shirt ready for Martin when the 33-year-old was there for the Tigers’ round 10 clash with North Melbourne. “He’s an amazing Richmond man,” Yze said on Wednesday. “But not only that, he’s such a smart player, and he could be a coach. “He would hate being in here and presenting (to a group as a coach) but out there (at training), the things that he could teach and coach our younger forwards will be stuff that we can’t coach. “We’ve always got the doors always open for him, depending on what he wants to do in his future. “If he wanted to come and mentor or come be a skills coach, he’d be more than welcome. “If he does decide to go down that path, we’d love if he had our colours on. “How small that is or how big that is could be up to him.” Yze said No.1 draft pick Sam Lalor, who will miss up to six weeks with a hamstring injury, was “star struck” when meeting Martin. “There’s no better player that can teach goal kicking and snapping and just the execution with the footy,” Yze said. “During his playing days, he didn’t like that pressure (of talking in front of a big group), but in a line meeting, he was so good, let alone one-on-one. “His impact he had all throughout his career was like high-level coaching in different environments. “To have him around the building recently, and for guys to lean on him and ask him questions … his impact could be enormous for us.” The enigmatic Martin called it quits following 302 AFL games after Richmond’s round 21 game against North Melbourne last year. He returned to be farewelled by the Tigers faithful in their final match of last season at the MCG. But the 2017 Brownlow medallist has typically kept a low-profile since, although he did appear in an ad campaign that cheekily hinted he might be open to a commentary career. Talk about Martin making more regular appearances at Punt Rd comes as Richmond prepare to welcome back several of his premiership teammates for their trip to face GWS on Saturday. Captain Toby Nankervis (managed), star forward Tom ****** (concussion), and midfielder Dion Prestia (achilles) are poised to be selected against the Giants. The trio were sorely missed last Friday night in their Dreamtime loss against Essendon. Injury-prone Prestia made a successful return via the VFL last Saturday night in his first game of the year at any level. 20. Asian shares, U.S. dollar climb on rosy data, tech optimism Asian shares, U.S. dollar climb on rosy data, tech optimism By Rocky Swift TOKYO (Reuters) – Asian shares continued a rally from Wall Street and the dollar held gains on Wednesday on promising economic signs in the United States and speculation of strong tech earnings. Markets welcomed what appeared to be easing trade frictions between the U.S. and Europe while global bond markets settled down after a scary surge in long-term yields. U.S. consumer confidence surprised on the upside ahead of closely watched jobs figures on Thursday. Nvidia jumped more than 4% yesterday and will be the last of the Magnificent 7 tech giants to report earnings after markets close in the U.S. “There is renewed confidence that Nvidia can beat the consensus estimates,” said Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone. If Nvidia comes through with better-than-expected sales and profit margins “the rally is on,” he added. The chipmaker is expected to report that first-quarter revenue surged 66.2% to $43.28 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. In signs of a thaw between the U.S. and Europe, European Union officials have asked companies for details of their U.S. investment plans, according to two sources familiar with the matter. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.3% in morning trading while Japan’s Nikkei advanced 0.6%, climbing a fourth straight session. The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of currencies, rose 0.1%, adding to Tuesday’s 0.6% rally. The greenback advanced 0.1% to $1.132 against the euro. *********** shares were up 0.17%, but the nation’s currency slid 0.2% after April consumer price data came in above expectations. The kiwi dollar slid 0.3% after the Reserve Bank of New Zealand cut rates as expected. Japanese bonds slid, trimming a surge yesterday, ahead of a 40-year auction and on speculation the Ministry of Finance will reduce the issuance of long-dated securities. Oil prices ticked up in early trading as the U.S. barred Chevron CVX.N from exporting crude from Venezuela under a new authorization on its assets there, raising the prospect of tighter supply. Brent crude futures rose 0.4% to $64.37 a barrel, while U.S. Spot gold rallied 0.1% after dropping more than 1% on Tuesday. 23. Trump administration sues North Carolina over its voter registration records Trump administration sues North Carolina over its voter registration records RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Trump administration accused North Carolina’s election board on Tuesday of violating federal law by failing to ensure voter registration records of some applicants contained identifying numbers. The Justice Department sued in federal court also asking a judge to force board officials to create a prompt method to obtain such numbers. The department alleges that the state and the board aren’t complying with the 2002 Help America Vote Act after board officials provided a statewide voter registration form that didn’t make clear an applicant must provide either a driver’s license number or the last four digits of a Social Security number. If an applicant lacks neither, the state must assign the person another unique number. A previous edition of the state board, in which Democrats held a majority, acknowledged the problem in late 2023 after a voter complained. The board updated the form but declined to contact people who had registered to vote since 2004 in time for the 2024 elections so they could fill in the missing numbers. According to the lawsuit, the board indicated that such information would be accumulated on an ad hoc basis as voters appeared at polling places. It’s unclear exactly how many voters’ records still lack identifying numbers. Lawyers from the department’s Civil Rights Division contend the board must act more aggressively. They want a judge to give the state 30 days to develop a plan to contact voters with records that don’t comply with federal law, obtain an identifying number for each and add that to the electronic list. The litigation follows similar efforts by the Republican Party and a state GOP candidate to address the registration records for the 2024 election. The lawsuit also referred to President Donald Trump’s broad executive order on elections in March to “guard against ******** voting, unlawful discrimination, and other forms of fraud, error, or suspicion.” “Accurate voter registration rolls are critical to ensure that elections in North Carolina are conducted fairly, accurately, and without fraud,” Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said in a press release. “The Department of Justice will not hesitate to file suit against jurisdictions that maintain inaccurate voter registration rolls in violation of federal voting laws.” This month, the board’s composition changed to reflect a 2024 law approved by the GOP-dominated General Assembly that shifted the board’s appointment powers from the now-Democratic governor to Republican State Auditor Dave Boliek. A previous 3-2 Democratic majority is now a 3-2 Republican majority. The new iteration of the board sounds open to embrace the Justice Department’s wishes. Executive Director Sam Hayes said late Tuesday the lawsuit was being reviewed, “but the failure to collect the information required by HAVA has been well documented. Rest assured that I am committed to bringing North Carolina into compliance with federal law.” Local elections start in September. The state and national GOP last year sued over the lack of identifying numbers, which they estimated could have affected 225,000 registrants. But federal judges declined to make changes so close to the general election. The issue also was litigated after Election Day as part of formal protests filed by the Republican candidate for a seat on the state Supreme Court who challenged about 60,000 ballots he contended were cast by registrants whose records failed to contain one of the two identifying numbers. The election board said earlier this year at least roughly half of those voters actually did provide an identifying number. State appeals courts criticized the board’s handling of the registration records but ultimately ruled the challenged ballots had to remain in the final election tally. Democratic Associate Justice Allison Riggs defeated Republican challenger Jefferson Griffin by 734 votes out of over 5.5 million ballots cast. ___ This story has been updated to corrected that the Help America Vote Act was passed in 2002, not 2003. 24. Australia’s consumer inflation holds steady in April Australia’s consumer inflation holds steady in April Customers purchase produce from stalls at Carriageworks Farmers Market in Sydney, Australia, on Saturday, April 26, 2025. Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images *********** consumer inflation held steady in April as higher health and holiday costs offset a drop in petrol prices, although the monthly measure tends to be volatile and left hopes for more interest rates cuts mostly intact. Data from the *********** Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday showed the monthly consumer price index rose 2.4% in April compared with a year earlier, unchanged from March but above median forecasts of 2.3%. The trimmed mean measure of core inflation increased by an annual rate of 2.8% in April from 2.7% in March. A measure excluding volatile items and holiday travel also picked up to 2.8% from 2.6%. Still, those figures remained in the central bank’s target band of 2-3%. Market reaction has been a tad muted as the April report only covers a portion of the full CPI basket and is concentrated on goods rather than services. Goods prices rose a mere 0.9% from a year ago. The *********** dollar was little changed at $0.6440, while three-year bond futures were flat at 96.60. “Today’s monthly CPI reading is not a comprehensive measure of price growth in the economy, with price changes for durable goods such as clothing and household goods measured, while many services prices are held constant,” said EY chief economist Cherelle Murphy. “The Reserve Bank is likely to deliver further monetary easing, given the upside risks to inflation have largely disappeared while global policy uncertainty remains elevated.” Swaps continued to price in a 65% probability for a rate cut at the next meeting in July, while a move in August is more than fully priced in following the release of the second quarter CPI report at the end of July. The Reserve Bank of Australia cut interest rates to a two-year low last week as cooling inflation at home offered scope to counter rising global trade risks, and left the door open to further easing in the months ahead. At the same time, the labour market has remained surprisingly resilient, churning out a solid amount of new jobs every month, keeping the jobless rate low at 4.1%. Still tepid wage growth suggests few risks of a damaging wage-price spiral. Wednesday’s report showed health costs rose 4.4% from a year ago, driven by a jump in health insurance premiums that are usually adjusted in April. Holiday travel and accommodation also jumped 5.3% from a year ago due to stronger demand during the Easter and school holiday *******. Prices for fuel tumbled 12% from a year ago. Rental prices rose 5.0%, the slowest annual growth since February 2023 in a sign for more inflation relief ahead, while electricity fell 6.5% thanks to government rebates on power bills.
