  2. Chevron investors reject stockholder proposals, Exxon faces none Chevron investors reject stockholder proposals, Exxon faces none By Sheila Dang HOUSTON (Reuters) -Chevron shareholders voted against three stockholder proposals during the U.S. oil producer’s annual meeting on Wednesday, including one calling for a report on the company’s human rights practices, while larger rival Exxon Mobil faced no investor resolutions for the first time in decades. There have been fewer resolutions on environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters this year than they did in 2024 and 2023 due to lack of investor appetite for such proposals. Lower-than-expected returns in renewable energy projects have also shifted shareholders’ focus back to oil and gas. Chevron investors rejected a resolution that would have allowed holders of at least 10% of the company’s common stock to call special meetings. They also voted down a proposal to produce a report about whether company investments in renewable energy could result in so-called stranded assets, or projects that lose value prematurely, according to preliminary voting results on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, Exxon’s annual meeting featured no qualifying shareholder resolutions for the first time since 1958. Exxon CEO Darren Woods said he attributed that to the company’s performance that has outpaced competitors, and to Exxon’s willingness to fight back against proposals he said were a detriment to the business. Investors approved all director nominees and executive compensation plans for both companies. 7. City of Karratha to back new water park feasibility study City of Karratha to back new water park feasibility study Karratha council is backing a fresh feasibility study to explore the prospect of a new water park within the city. Councillors this week passed an amended motion, supporting the delivery of a feasibility study to be presented to council for review as part of the community infrastructure plan and long-term financial plan. Cr Joanne Waterstrom Muller recommended the amendment, and said it was aimed at ensuring all possible locations across the city are assessed to find the best spot for the new water attraction. “Even though a Karratha Leisureplex improvement plan was conducted back in 2020, this previous information can still be utilised in this new feasibility study and costs can be recalculated. The community’s priority needs have changed and now need to be reconsidered by council,” Cr Muller’s amendment read. Cr Brenton Johannsen put forward an alternative motion – which was ultimately voted down – calling for council to go ahead with staged implementation of water slides at the Leisureplex, and to locate a water park in Karratha rather than Dampier. “Everyone around this table doesn’t understand what sort of water park the community wants at this point,” Cr Johannsen said. “Something like the Karratha Leisureplex slide, the plans are there. We need to just proceed with it and get on with providing what people have asked for. “In regards to a water park, why not focus on a town where we’ve got the ability to put it in, we’ve got the larger population that can use it and access it without kids having to jump on their bike and ride to Dampier, which isn’t practical for a lot of kids, and just get on with it.” In response, deputy mayor Daiva Gillam said proper planning was needed to get the best desired outcome. “We need to go back and define, measure and analyse first, before revisiting the old feasibility plan, and then probably put it in the bin and start again,” she said. “I’m down for water slides, I just think it needs to be done properly so that we get the outcome that we’re actually seeking so that it’s delivering value to the community.” Administration supported Cr Muller’s amendment, stating that the feasibility study’s scope will be broadened to include a city-wide site assessment and any proposed projects supported by council will be included in the community infrastructure plan and long-term financial plan. 9. California avocado growers say ******** imports have helped their sales California avocado growers say ******** imports have helped their sales SOMIS, Calif. (AP) — Andreas Tompros lost his home and at least a third of his avocado orchard to a wildfire last year, but the 47-year-old grower is not worried about his farm making a comeback. While California farmers often rattle off a list of challenges they face including high labor costs, water restrictions and overseas competition, many avocado growers say they have a good thing going. A key reason may come as a surprise to some — ******** imports. When the United States lifted its ban on ******** avocados in 1997, California growers worried at first that the imported fruit would displace their production. But the steady flow of avocados has wound up helping, not hurting, their sales by allowing for a year-round supply to markets and restaurants that has fomented demand, farmers say. Before the influx, most American consumers considered avocados to be specialty items — and when they came into season in California, industry officials had to work to rev up widespread interest in order to sell them. But not anymore. Avocado consumption has been booming in the United States over the past two decades. The amount of fruit available per person tripled to more than 8 pounds (3.6 kilograms) between 2000 and 2021, federal statistics show. Avocado toast and guacamole are regular offerings not just in culinary hubs like NYC but at cafes around the Midwest and the South. Avocados are in demand On a steep, sun-soaked hillside northwest of Los Angeles, Tompros is replanting nearly 300 avocado trees with the belief that Americans’ hunger for the fruit — and his orchard — will continue to grow. “It will come back, and I believe it will become better than it was,” Tompros, who previously ran a software company in Hollywood, said of the orchard he took over five years ago in the tiny community of Somis. Avocado demand has also been buoyed by consumers’ growing interest in healthy fats, said Emiliano Escobedo, executive director of the Hass Avocado Board. A 2000 U.S. law created the board that collected 2.5 cents for every pound (0.5 kilograms) of avocados imported or produced in the United States. The board used the money to market avocados and conduct nutritional research, an effort that has been widely credited with making the fruit ubiquitous in supermarkets and on restaurant menus. “It’s been really wildly successful. It generates way more money than most of these other industry boards do,” said Richard Sexton, distinguished professor of agricultural and resource economics at the University of California, Davis. “When you look at the growth rate in avocado consumption relative to all fruits, the difference in growth rate is dramatic.” A successful crop Escobedo said about 60% of U.S. households currently buy avocados, and about half of these are responsible for the overwhelming majority of consumption, which means there’s still room for the market to grow — especially in the Northeast, where the fruit is less common. “There is a lot of opportunity for certain groups of people to increase their purchasing of avocados,” Escobedo said. While the Trump administration has threatened tariffs on a spate of ******** goods, avocados have so far been spared. California growers said they want ******** avocados to keep flowing into the country, though they also want robust U.S. inspections of the imports to keep out pests to protect their crop. “If you are going to farm in California, avocados are about the best deal right now,” said Ken Melban, president of the California Avocado Commission. California farmers grow about 10% of the avocados eaten in the United States, Melban said, and account for nearly all of the country’s domestic avocado production. The fruit is largely grown in California from April through September, and ******** imports arrive year-round to meet nationwide demand, which exceeds what the state’s farmers grow, he said. In Southern California’s Ventura County, many growers have shifted to avocados since lemon prices were walloped by cheaper imports from Argentina. As recently planted trees start bearing fruit in a few years, the region’s avocado production is likely to rise, said Korinne Bell, agricultural commissioner for the county northwest of Los Angeles. A booming market, despite wildfires Avocado trees do not come without risks in a region prone to wildfires. Still, demand for the trees has jumped due to interest from lemon growers — and since the November 2024 fire charred Ventura County avocado orchards, said Rob Brokaw, whose family-owned nursery has supplied avocado trees to California growers for 70 years. “Right now we are sold out essentially for this year,” Brokaw said. “And we’re mostly sold out for 2026.” Tompros debated whether to plant the more fire-resistant lemon trees or another crop after the fire ripped through Somis, but he decided to replant due to the soaring demand for Super Bowl guacamole and avocado toast. “It’s the super food, and it’s still growing in popularity,” Tompros said. He’s taking precautions to not plant the trees too close to what will eventually be his rebuilt home, because the dried-out leaves that help nourish the orchard’s soil can also fuel blazes. It may take a few years, but Tompros hopes it won’t be too long before his newly planted trees bear fruit that he can sell to a local packinghouse or in seasonal gift boxes with citrus and passionfruit that he ships directly to customers. 12. Aust diplomat’s husband walks after spitting on woman Aust diplomat’s husband walks after spitting on woman A New Zealand court has discharged the husband of an *********** diplomat without convicting him, months after the man pleaded guilty to assault for drunkenly spitting on a teenager during a street altercation on the night of a rugby match in Wellington. The man was granted permanent name suppression. Judge Paul Mabey, presiding at the Wellington District Court, said he didn’t accept the man’s arguments that the potential harms to him justified the discharge, but the magistrate agreed that his wife’s diplomatic career could be curbed by an assault conviction and the publication of his name. The man could be barred from travel abroad to her future postings, the judge said on Thursday, and the family could be split up if the *********** High Commission decided he could not remain in New Zealand to preserve the bilateral relations between the countries. The charges arose after an episode last September after the man attended a rugby match between New Zealand and Australia in the capital. He was drunk when he arrived at Wellington’s main nightlife area, where he approached a group of teenagers and became aggressive when they didn’t want to engage with him, the judge said. A member of the group punched the man, who responded by spitting on a young woman. He was arrested by police officers who happened to be passing. The case has provoked widespread news coverage in New Zealand and Australia along with mobile phone footage of the man’s arrest, in which he verbally abused a police officer and claimed he had diplomatic immunity. He had such immunity, conferred by protocol to the partners of senior envoys to New Zealand, which he later waived voluntarily. He pleaded guilty to New Zealand’s lowest level of assault charge in January. It is punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $NZ4000 ($A3700). “For the avoidance of any doubt at all, he is not here to be sentenced for abusing the police or rashly claiming diplomatic immunity,” Judge Mabey said. “He was right to say he had that immunity,” the judge added. “He was completely stupid to say it at all.” But the magistrate said he would discharge the man because of his wife’s suggestion that the *********** diplomatic service would be unable to ignore the husband’s conviction and the widely-distributed mobile phone video of his arrest when considering her future. “If I were not to suppress his name, his offending would be inextricably linked to his wife and she would suffer considerably,” the judge said. He rejected a bid by the man’s lawyer to suppress the country his wife represented in New Zealand. 13. Marc Marquez’s MotoGP comeback from ‘nightmare’ to title contender Marc Marquez’s MotoGP comeback from ‘nightmare’ to title contender Some fans are hailing Marquez’s return to title-contending form as a comeback for the ages. It is not hard to see why. Since winning his most recent MotoGP title in 2019, Marquez has suffered a string of injuries. He broke his arm at the start of the 2020 season, which over the course of two years required four operations. In 2021 a motocross ****** resulted in severe concussion. The following year, double vision meant he had to miss many races, and in 2023 he broke his ankle, ribs and fingers. For him, his comeback is complete – regardless of whether he wins the title. “The most difficult challenge of my career… I have already achieved that – coming back from a lot of injuries. I broke many, many things just trying to improve my skills,” he said. After a solid 2024, when he claimed three feature race wins and two pole positions, he joined the factory Ducati team on a two-year contract. “The first goal was to rebuild my confidence,” he said. “And rebuild the confidence means step by step to try to put in targets that you can achieve. “You cannot arrive at a victory straight away. First of all you need to understand the bike, then try to finish in the top five, then a podium and then step by step fight for a victory.” Source link #Marc #Marquezs #MotoGP #comeback #nightmare #title #contender Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  15. East Timor to deport an ex-********* congressman accused of masterminding a governor’s ******* East Timor to deport an ex-********* congressman accused of masterminding a governor’s ******* DILI, East Timor (AP) — East Timor said Thursday it would deport a former ********* congressman charged with multiple murders in the Philippines and added that he was a national security threat whose presence could damage the country’s image ahead of its entry to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Ex-Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr. was arrested in East Timor’s capital of Dili on Wednesday by immigration authorities and would immediately be deported to the Philippines for staying without a visa and after his passport was cancelled by Manila’s Department of Foreign Affairs, the East Timor government said in a statement. East Timor did not immediately specify a date for the deportation of Teves, who has been staying in Dili for more than two years as he tried to seek asylum, straining relations between the two Southeast Asian democracies. The Philippines has been calling on East Timor to repatriate Teves to face trial. The Department of Justice in Manila on Thursday welcomed East Timor’s decision and said it has designated a team of justice and immigration officials to help repatriate Teves. East Timor said in a statement that Teves’ presence in the country was “unacceptable” and his stay for more than two years “poses a disruptive factor in bilateral relations between the two states and establishes a serious precedent with potential implications for internal security.” “The perception that Timor-Leste might be viewed as a refuge for individuals fleeing international justice undermines the integrity of our borders and our shared efforts to combat transnational crime,” East Timor said, using the country’s formal name. “The imminent full accession of Timor-Leste to ASEAN, scheduled for October this year, further reinforces the responsibility of the Timorese state to actively collaborate with its regional partners in upholding justice, legality, and stability in the region,” according to East Timor. East Timor President José Ramos-Horta told The Associated Press in an interview in Dili in September that there was “no possibility, under the law” that Teves would be able to remain in East Timor and that he would likely be sent back to the Philippines after his appeal to gain asylum had been exhausted. Teves has been sought by the Philippine government in connection with the March 2023 killings of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo and several other people, including impoverished villagers seeking medical aid from him, by men in military camouflage and body armor who barged into his central Philippine home with assault rifles. At least 17 others were wounded in the brazen attack, which was captured on security cameras. Teves has denied involvement in the killings, which President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who was backed by Degamo, then called “purely political.” East Timor, Asia’s youngest country, is in the process of joining the Philippines and nine other countries in the ASEAN, a regional grouping which espouses the rule of law and good governance. It currently has observer status in the regional bloc. Teves’ initial request to seek asylum in East Timor was rejected, a decision which he appealed. In March 2024, police arrested Teves while he was playing at a golf driving range in Dili and it’s not immediately clear how he managed to regain liberty before bring put into custody by immigration authorities on Wednesday. __ Associated Press writers Edna Tarigan in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Jim Gomez in Manila, Philippines, contributed to this report. Get New Lord Of The Rings 4K Steelbook Editions For Only $28 Each Get New Lord Of The Rings 4K Steelbook Editions For Only $28 Each The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers 4K Steelbook Edition released this week alongside a reprint of Fellowship of the Ring’s matching edition. Fellowship was a Walmart exclusive when it first launched earlier this year, and it had appeared like The Two Towers would continue that trend. But that turned out not to be the case, and now both collectible editions are up for grabs for $28 each at Amazon and Walmart. We wouldn’t be surprised to see both movies sell out soon at Amazon, especially since there’s a 20% discount at the moment. These standalone releases cost considerably less than the previously released LOTR Trilogy Steelbook Collection. But to be clear, the steelbook designs and artwork are pulled from that box set, so there’s really no need to buy these if you already own the collection. But for fans who don’t have the box set, now’s your chance to get two LOTR 4K Blu-rays with gorgeous steelbook cases (and digital copies) for $56 total. $28 (was $35) | Available Now The Fellowship of the Ring’s standalone Steelbook Edition originally released on January 7 as a Walmart exclusive. The retailer sold out of copies multiple times in the weeks before and after launch, so it’s nice that fans who missed out can still buy it alongside The Two Towers. Unlike The Lord of the Rings Trilogy 4K Blu-ray sets, the standalone release of Fellowship of the Ring also includes the digital version of the first film in the trilogy. You’ll get the theatrical and extended versions of the movie in both formats. If you haven’t watched the extended editions–all three films have one–they are definitely worth the time investment. The extended cut adds 30 minutes to the overall runtime and is spread across two discs. Theatrical Edition (Disc 1) – 178 minutes (2 hours and 58 minutes) Extended Edition (Discs 2-3) – 208 minutes (3 hours and 28 minutes) $28 (was $35) | Available Now Once again, The Two Towers Limited Edition Steelbook is the same as the one that comes with the The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Steelbook Box Set. But just like with The Fellowship of the Ring, you’ll get 4K Blu-ray and digital versions of The Two Towers. The 4K Steelbook Edition comes with the theatrical and extended cuts of The Two Towers on three discs. The extended cut adds 44 minutes to the film and is split across two discs. Theatrical Edition – 179 minutes (2 hours and 59 minutes) Extended Edition – 223 minutes (3 hours and 43 minutes) It seems like only a matter of time before The Return of the King gets a standalone release in Limited Edition Steelbook format. If you haven’t watched The Lord of the Rings on 4K Blu-ray, all three films (and The Hobbit Trilogy) look and sound beautiful. Along with upscaled 4K visuals, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King support Dolby Vision and HDR10 on compatible displays. The audio experience can be enhanced with Dolby Atmos or Dolby TrueHD 7.1 surround sound. These are the only standalone 4K Blu-ray editions of The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers in North America. Jackson’s Tolkien adaptations are almost exclusively printed as trilogy box sets on 4K Blu-ray and/or Blu-ray. Although the new Steelbook Editions offer a budget-friendly way to get collectible versions of Peter Jackson’s excellent adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy classic, there are still cheaper ways to buy the films on 4K. Here’s a quick look at 4K Blu-ray releases of Jackson’s six Middle-earth movies. You can also get the recently released Lord of the Rings anime on 4K Blu-ray for $20 at Walmart. Peter Jackson’s Tolkien Adaptations in 4K You can take a closer look at The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Steelbook Trilogy Collections below. $180 The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Steelbook Box Set received a reprint in March, but it’s no longer available directly from major retailers. That said, you can buy it from third-party resellers for right around retail price. Compared to the standalone releases, the box set generally feels a pricey these days, especially since you miss out on digital versions of the film. It does, however, come with a nice steelbook slipcase for all three films. That said, if The Return of the King gets a standalone Limited Edition Steelbook release, you’ll probably be able to snag steelbooks for all three films for under $100. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy’s standard 4K Blu-ray box set is available for $67.80 at Amazon–more than $100 cheaper than this steelbook set. $170 Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit Trilogy also has a Limited Edition Steelbook box set. Unsurprisingly, The Hobbit Trilogy has never been as popular as LOTR, so this one typically isn’t as difficult to find in stock for around retail price. But if you want to get steelbook editions of all six of Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth films, you can grab this box set for $170 from Amazon. It’s unclear if The Hobbit films will ever receive standalone steelbook releases. For now, the only way to get a 4K edition of any of the three Hobbit films with a steelbook case is to pick up the box set. Like The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Steelbook, this set only comes with 4K Blu-ray editions of each film, but you will get the theatrical and extended cuts of each. It is worth emphasizing that The Hobbit Trilogy’s standard 4K Blu-ray box set is substantially cheaper than this set. Right now, you can get The Hobbit Trilogy for $43 at Amazon. Thermomix cops $70k fine after making ‘misleading’ NDIS approval claims Thermomix cops $70k fine after making ‘misleading’ NDIS approval claims The company behind all-in-one blender Thermomix has copped a $79,000 fine for allegedly claiming its products were endorsed by the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Vorwerk is the second company in a week to be hit with infringement notices from the consumer watchdog, alleging Thermomix falsely promoted its TM6 cooking product and Kobold cordless vacuum and mop as being endorsed through the NDIS or registered by an entity administering the NDIS. This included allegedly describing the products as “NDIS approved”, “NDIS-registered product”, “NDIS-consumables”, “NDIS assistive technology” and “NDIS equipment’”. *********** Competition and Consumer Commission chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said the NDIS did not provide specific approval for any particular goods or services. “Each NDIS participant has unique needs, and what’s funded under their plan is determined individually, not through a list of approved products,” she said. “There are no categories of goods or services which are automatically NDIS approved or funded for all NDIS participants.” Ms Cass-Gottlieb warned it would not hesitate to take appropriate action against companies that misled consumers experiencing vulnerability or disadvantage. Thermomix has been contacted for comment. The ACCC last November put businesses on notice of its focus on problematic advertising practices targeting NDIS participants. Since then, it has taken compliance and enforcement action against a number of businesses. WA bedding and mattress retailer Bedshed was last week slapped with a $40,000 fine for allegedly making similar false statements its mattresses, furniture and bedding accessories were “NDIS approved” or “NDIS permitted”. US suspends engine sales to ******** planemaker COMAC, New York Times reports US suspends engine sales to ******** planemaker COMAC, New York Times reports WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The United States has suspended some sales to China of critical U.S. technologies, including those related to jet engines to ******** state-owned aerospace manufacturer COMAC, the New York Times reported on Wednesday. COMAC is developing its own commercial planes to compete with dominant planemakers Airbus and Boeing, but China does not yet have suitable homegrown engines and remains reliant on imports. Citing two people familiar with the matter, the New York Times said the move was in response to China’s recent restriction on exports of critical minerals to the U.S. The newspaper said the department had suspended some licenses that allowed U.S. firms to sell products and technology to COMAC to develop its C919 aircraft, according to one person familiar with the matter. The U.S. Commerce Department told Reuters in a statement that it was reviewing exports of strategic significance to China. “In some cases, Commerce has suspended existing export licenses or imposed additional license requirements while the review is pending,” it said. Aviation equipment is among the sectors affected, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters. COMAC did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A spokesperson for the ******** Embassy in Washington told Reuters: “China firmly opposes the US’s overstretching the concept of national security, abusing export controls, and maliciously blocking and suppressing China.” COMAC’s single-aisle C919 plane is made in China but many of its components come from overseas, including its LEAP-1C engine made by a joint venture between GE Aerospace and France’s Safran. GE Aerospace did not offer an immediate comment. The C919 – designed to compete with best-selling narrow-body models from Airbus and Boeing – entered service in China in 2023 after winning domestic safety certification in 2022. Eighteen C919s are currently in operation, according to aviation intelligence provider ch-aviation, and they fly only within mainland China and Hong Kong. GE was first granted a license to sell the C919’s LEAP engines to COMAC in 2014. Early in 2020, the United States weighed whether to deny GE’s latest license request for the engine, but President Donald Trump’s first administration granted it. “I want China to buy our jet engines, the best in the World,” Trump said in February that year. “I want to make it EASY to do business with the United States, not difficult.” (Reporting by Jasper Ward, Karen Freifeld, David Shepardson, Lisa Barrington, Sophie Yu; Editing by Cynthia Osterman and Jamie Freed) Source link #suspends #engine #sales #******** #planemaker #COMAC #York #Times #reports Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  24. Young Hill Farms implements subterranean drain network in order to futureproof against waterlogging events Young Hill Farms implements subterranean drain network in order to futureproof against waterlogging events An Esperance grain farmer is implementing a new drainage system to reduce the impact of waterlogging events, an “old technology” he believes will significantly increase his cropping potential. Matt Hill farms more than 15,000 hectares alongside his brother-in-law Mick Young and their wives Jodi Young and Angela Hill in the Esperance sandplain — an area spanning 150km west and 100km east of the coastal town, characterized by light, sandy soils. Beef and sheep production is dominant in the region but cropping is starting to increase due to the rising challenges of farming livestock in the current economic environment. Young Hill Farms had a “lucky” start to the 2025 season, with early rains setting the farmers up for a positive harvest. “In early April we got very good rains — anywhere between 30 and 50 millimetres across our properties — which was just perfect to start seeding,” Mr Hill said. “It’s been warm and dry since then, but there’s enough moisture in the soil that our crops are still germinating. “Half the trick is getting it out of the ground and I think we’ve just about achieved that.” Esperance experienced more than 60mm of rainfall since Friday, with several more anticipated before the end of the month. The latest climate outlook from the Bureau of Meterology is forecasting rainfall in the month of June to be below average for parts of south-west Australia, with warmer than average days and nights expected. “All I can tell you is there’s airseeders going everywhere,” he said. “The lights at night time are all over the countryside, so I think everybody is working hard to try and get their seed in on some moisture while they can.” This year, the farmers have put in roughly 6700ha of canola, 6700ha of wheat and 1500ha of barley. Mr Hill said while nothing new was being done on the farm in terms of cropping, extensive work continued on their subterranean drain network to prevent waterlogging, a common issue in areas characterised by sandy, flat plains. This technology, costing $1500 to $2000 per hectare, has been implemented on 200 hectares so far over the last two years. Mr Hill said his determination to pursue sub soil drainage options was born off the back of the last waterlogging event the farm experienced in 2023. “I’m actually sitting in a paddock now that two years ago was under water for four months,” he said. “We’ve got a 2500ha block on the sand plain and we probably suffered a 50 per cent loss of canola due to waterlogging. “It’s a huge dent. Very significant.” Waterlogging events are expected once in every five years in the area, with a significant waterlogging event — where more than 800mm will fall across the year — expected every 10 years. Water accumulates in these regions, rising to the surface and drowning, and thus killing, crop. The drainage involves burying agricultural pipe 700mm below the surface, enabling water to seep away from the flat plains towards an open surface drain which can be utilised elsewhere on the farm. “The Americans capture a lot of it and use it for irrigation,” Mr Hill said. “It’s not happening here now, but it might be something that happens in the future.” Mr Hill said he, alongside several other farmers in the area, were in the “trial-and-error” phase of the new system but believed it would pay off financially in the long-term. “There’s a bit of a movement in Esperance in the last five years to give this tile drainage a go,” he said. “It’s quite expensive — that’s probably why it hasn’t taken off previously. “If it does proves itself as a viable option, and I think it will, then I think that the uptake will be be very rapid.” Mr Hill said he would continue to drop 50 to 100ha of drain piping per year until he was “comfortable” with the level of risk. He said if he could effectively stop waterlogging from occurring, or occurring as frequently, then the cropping potential would be “quite large”. 25. Ancient DNA reveals a new group of people who lived near land bridge between the Americas Ancient DNA reveals a new group of people who lived near land bridge between the Americas NEW YORK (AP) — Scientists have identified a new pod of ancient hunter-gatherers who lived near the land bridge between North America and South America about 6,000 years ago. Researchers are still charting how human populations spread across the Americas thousands of years ago, arriving first in North America before veering south. Groups that split off developed their own collection of genes that scientists can use to piece together the human family tree. Discovered through ancient DNA, the group lived in the high plateaus of present-day Bogotá, Colombia — close to where the Americas meet. Scientists aren’t sure exactly where they fall in the family tree because they’re not closely related to ancient Native Americans in North America and also not linked to ancient or present-day South Americans. The new study was published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances. “Up to this point, we didn’t believe there was any other lineage that would appear in South America,” said archaeologist Andre Luiz Campelo dos Santos with Florida Atlantic University who was not involved with the new research. “This is unexpected.” Just 4,000 years later, these ancient humans were gone and a genetically-different human clan inhabited the area. Scientists aren’t sure exactly what happened to make them fade away — whether they mixed into a new, ******* group or were pushed out entirely. Analyzing more genes in South America will help confirm if this new group truly did disappear or if there could be evidence of their descendants elsewhere, said Campelo dos Santos. Studying these ancient Colombian genes are important to piecing together the history of the Americas since ancient people had to cross this land bridge to settle in and spread across South America. The area is “the gateway to the South American continent,” said study author Andrea Casas-Vargas with the National University of Colombia. ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
