PS5 Pro Selling Better Than PS4 Pro In ‘The Same *******’, Sony Says PS5 Pro Selling Better Than PS4 Pro In ‘The Same *******’, Sony Says Sony’s CFO, Hiroki Totoki, has gone on record suggesting that the PlayStation 5 Pro is selling just fine per the company’s expectations. In a recent statement, the CFO (also the firm’s COO) said that the PS5 Pro is ‘performing slightly stronger’ than the PS4 Pro did in the same ******* – in 2016. He was frank in noting that Sony didn’t expect ‘large sales’ going into the manufacture of the console ‘Under the Impression’ In a recent statement grabbed by Nikkei Asia, Hiroki Totoki explained how things were looking for the PS5 Pro, which was released on November 7: It is a high-end product targeted at core customers, so we haven’t been eyeing a large sales plan to begin with. I’m under the impression that the product is performing slightly stronger than the pre-orders of the PS4 Pro during the same *******, so I don’t think it is adversely affecting the product’s sales plan. Critics were quick to point out how strange it sounds that the CFO is merely ‘under the impression’ that the console is selling well, but let’s ignore that for now. Ahead of the release of the PS5 Pro, a few issues surfaced that many believed would hamper sales of the console. Firstly, the price point – at $699.99, the PS5 Pro is one of the most expensive consoles released in a very long time, but that doesn’t appear to have been a problem. Also, users were concerned that the console wouldn’t make ‘enough of a difference’ to warrant the upgrade. It’s technically impressive, but many will be reluctant to purchase something new just to tease a few extra frames or a little more clarity out of their console. Regardless, financial projections at Sony are on the up, and if Totoki’s statement is anything to go by, so are sales of the PS5 Pro. How many of those sales have been claimed by scalpers, though? At least there’s now so much stock available in some markets that they’re being forced to sell them at a loss… Did you invest in a PS5 Pro? Let us know in the comments. As tools like ChatGPT by OpenAI become more popular, a larger debate has been ignited among AI businesses in the ******* States over content creation and copyrights. AI startup OpenAI, the most valuable private firm in the world, recently won an important battle in this regard when a New York federal judge on November 7 dismissed a lawsuit against the company that alleged that the startup had misused articles from news outlets Raw Story and AlterNet to train its large language models. The advisory added that the company’s Q1 preliminary results and Q2 outlook missed on lower than expected revenue. Combined with the absence of revenue guidance reiteration, it appears Super Micro may potentially be seeing some business challenges, contended Goldman. Tens of thousands demand the resignation of Valencia leader for poor flood response – National Tens of thousands demand the resignation of Valencia leader for poor flood response – National Tens of thousands of Spaniards marched in the eastern city of Valencia on Saturday to demand the resignation of the regional president in charge of the emergency response to last week’s catastrophic floods that left more than 200 ***** and others missing. A group of protestors clashed with riot police in front of Valencia’s city hall, where the protestors started their march to the seat of the regional government. Police used batons to beat them back. Regional leader Carlos Mazón is under immense pressure after his administration ******* to issue flood alerts to citizens’ cellphones until hours after the flooding started on the night of Oct. 29. Many marchers held up homemade signs or chanted “Mazón Resign!” Others carried signs with messages like “You ******* Us!” Upon arrival at the regional government seat, some protesters slung mud on the building and left handprints of the muck on its facade. He said that he “respected” the march. Mazón, of the ************* Popular Party, is also being criticized for what people perceive as the slow and chaotic response to the natural disaster. Thousands of volunteers were the first boots on the ground in many of the hardest hit areas on Valencia’s southern outskirts. It took days for officials to mobilize the thousands of police reinforcements and soldiers that the regional government asked central authorities to send in. More on World More videos In Spain, regional governments are charged with handling civil protection and can ask the national government in Madrid, led by the Socialists, for extra resources. Mazón has defended his handling of the crisis saying that its magnitude was unforeseeable and that his administration didn’t receive sufficient warnings from central authorities. Conservatives weigh potential show of opposition against Johnson Conservatives weigh potential show of opposition against Johnson Even as Republicans are increasingly optimistic that they’ll keep control of the House, some conservatives remain wary of Mike Johnson — and they’re discussing how to telegraph their concerns in next week’s secret leadership ballot. With nearly two dozen races still outstanding, Johnson seems close to a major victory: Holding the tiny GOP majority, after a campaign season where he tied himself closely to Donald Trump and campaigned heavily for his at-risk members. Still, some House Republicans are mulling ways to signal their potential opposition to Johnson’s bid on the secret ballot, according to two Republicans familiar with the discussions, who were granted anonymity to talk about private plans. Johnson is expected to easily clear the majority hurdle needed to become the speaker nominee in that meeting on Wednesday. But conservatives could field a candidate to run against him for the speaker nod, or may try to oppose him or vote present in the secret ballot. That won’t be enough to derail his nomination, but it’s a warning for Johnson ahead of the real test in January, when he’ll need a majority vote on the House floor to take the gavel. If Republicans only take control of the House by a slim margin, as expected, that means Johnson will need near-unanimous support from his conference since he can’t count on any Democratic votes. Enter skeptical conservatives, who want concessions from Johnson on the rules governing the chamber and a plan to secure ************* wins in exchange for their votes. Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy faced similar demands two years ago, when it took him 15 ballots to get elected speaker on the House floor — he ultimately had to make several changes to the rules that gave conservatives more power and severely weakened his hold on the conference. “There are a number of members who are still very undecided and withholding judgment,” said one GOP member, who was granted anonymity to speak candidly. Their hesitations are tied to “past performance,” like how Johnson handled spending fights and Ukraine aid, but also questions about “whether or not we’re going to be able to deliver.” If another candidate doesn’t challenge Johnson next week, that could allow leadership to call for a voice vote rather than a ballot — that’s how Paul Ryan earned the speaker nod in 2016 — handicapping any ************* attempt to formally vote against Johnson, at least until January. Hardliners largely in the ultra-************* House Freedom Caucus backed a symbolic candidate, Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), against McCarthy in 2022. But Biggs ******* to get a majority in the conference vote. The Arizona *********** declined to say if he would vote for Johnson next week or if he would mount another symbolic challenge. Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), another Freedom Caucus member, said he wasn’t sure yet if he would support Johnson, adding that his focus is on the rules for the next Congress. “[The] ****** is in the details,” Norman said, while joking that the group was not privately “scheming” but instead “we’re discussing, we’re planning.” Johnson has a few advantages over McCarthy that could help him avoid a drawn-out leadership ******. McCarthy was looking to lead Republicans when Democrats were going to control both the Senate and the White House. Johnson, however, is looking at a Donald Trump presidency and possible control of both chambers of Congress, and many GOP lawmakers are eager to ***** into their agenda. There is a ***** that Trump could retaliate against those hamstringing the GOP agenda, and his influence in deep-red districts could be particularly costly if he goes nuclear in ways he previously has, including encouraging primary challengers. Plus, if Trump bearhugs Johnson, as the GOP leader predicts he will, that would complicate any effort to derail his speakership bid. If Johnson refuses to play ball on ************* demands, they would have to choose between backing down with little to show for it or risking Trump’s wrath. And if the floor ****** that begins on Jan. 3 lasts more than three days, it risks delaying the congressional certification of Trump’s election victory. But Johnson still has stubborn pockets of opposition he’ll have to work on. Eleven Republicans helped advance an ouster effort against Johnson earlier this year, though several have since indicated they would not have actually voted to boot him from office. He has some detractors outside that group as well, who publicly grumbled that they didn’t have ****** in Johnson’s leadership but believed a May ouster would have plunged the conference into ill-timed chaos. Johnson’s most vocal detractors are Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Thomas Massie (R-***.). While neither have publicly indicated since the election how they will vote next week, Greene has said she wants to delay the secret-ballot leadership contest. Other Johnson critics reside within the Freedom Caucus, and members of the group convened behind closed doors this week with incoming lawmakers to strategize about leadership votes, concessions they want on the rules and the start of the Trump administration. Multiple conservatives say they are eager to protect the changes they extracted under McCarthy, including the internal rule that allows only one member to trigger a vote to oust a speaker, known as the motion to vacate. But they also have various demands about government spending — and the Dec. 20 government shutdown deadline could be a major test for Johnson ahead of the January floor vote. But it is not just the conference’s conservatives who are trying to shape the next Congress. A group of centrists have been crafting their own rule proposals for months. They filed potential amendments to the rules earlier this week, including one that would require a majority of House Republicans to support a motion to vacate in order to trigger a vote to oust a speaker, one member familiar with the effort told POLITICO. Another allows members to be removed from committees if they block the party’s legislative priorities by opposing so-called rule votes on the House floor. Some Republicans have also called for Johnson to overhaul the House Rules Committee by removing ************* Reps. Chip Roy (R-Texas), Massie and Norman. The three were added to the typically leadership-aligned panel by McCarthy — part of his deal with hardliners two years ago. They’ve used their posts to cause occasional headaches for leadership, preventing bills from getting out of the committee until their demands are met. Illustrating the tough spot Johnson is in, conservatives are ready to demand that the three members keep those spots. “I’d like to stay on Rules,” Norman said. “I’m doing a good job.” Source link #Conservatives #weigh #potential #show #opposition #Johnson Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Konami is Remaking Snake Eater Because Younger Gamers Don’t Know About MGS Anymore Konami is Remaking Snake Eater Because Younger Gamers Don’t Know About MGS Anymore Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is an ambitious remake of the legendary stealth action title released on PlayStation 2 in 2004. It has been in development at Konami for some time, and amidst ongoing content drops including screenshots and teaser trailers, it was revealed that it’ll be released in full in 2025. In a recent interview, MGS’ series producer, Noriaki Okamura, revealed one of the driving reasons why Konami resolved to remake one of the most iconic games in the series. ‘It Was Basically Our Duty’ In the most recent iteration of Play magazine (and circulated by GamesRadar), Noriaki Okamura sat down to talk about all things Metal Gear Solid. He revealed one of the core reasons why Konami decided to remake Metal Gear Solid 3 more than 20 years after it was first released: One of the things that really sparked us to do the remake in general is because we realised that a lot of the newer, younger generation of gamers aren’t familiar with the Metal Gear series anymore. It was basically our mission, our duty, to kind of continue making sure that the series lives on for future generations. After all, we leave behind much more than just DNA, as Solid Snake would say—but again, who is Solid Snake? In the 2000s, Metal Gear Solid 3 became one of my most beloved games, and I looped the story time and again. It felt so ahead of its time, boasting an immersive, lengthy story, an open-ended operating system, and unique camouflage, healing, and survival mechanics. All that will be present in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, but everything has been improved upon immensely for this ambitious remake. Okamura raises a good point, though. The first Metal Gear game was in 1987, and the last major release in the series was in 2015 with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. That’s about the time that Konami and Hideo Kojima, the creator of the series, fell out of one another’s good graces. The team at Konami tried to release a survival horror MGS game called MG Survive in 2018, but it was am monumental flop. It has been ten years since the last Metal Gear Solid game, and there being so much that came before means it’s daunting to a newcomer who just wants to get involved and see what the fuss is all about. Where do you even begin with a franchise this expansive? There are almost 40 years of history wrapped up in Metal Gear Solid. Let’s hope that the Snake Eater remake isn’t the end of it. CNN Panelists Engage in Screaming Match Over Trump’s Anti-Trans Ads CNN Panelists Engage in Screaming Match Over Trump’s Anti-Trans Ads Jay Michaelson seemingly almost called his CNN appearance to an end after devolving into a passionate argument about “transphobic rhetoric” with Shermichael Singleton. What started as a conversation about methods of winning swing voters quickly got out of hand, with host Abby Phillip failing to stop the two men from shouting over each other. Kicking off the segment, the NewsNight with Abby Phillip panel debated how effective Donald Trump’s constant anti-trans political ads were in winning voters from the Democrats. CNN’s Abby Phillip demands Shermichael Singleton “talk about this in a way that is respectful” after Jay Michaelson accused him of using a “slur” when he said people “don’t believe boys should play girl sports.” pic.twitter.com/k9JWbhqCzH — Alex Christy (@alexchristy17) November 9, 2024 “I think there are a lot of families out there who don’t believe boys should play girl’s sports,” Singleton said, prompting a rebuttal from Michaelson. “They’re not boys! I am not going to listen to transphobia at this table! I am not going to listen to you call a trans girl a boy,” he exclaimed. “You didn’t allow me to finish my explanation,” Singleton said. “When you use a word that‘s a slur, I‘m going to interrupt. That’s not how it is. They’re not boys. They’re not boys!” Michaelson responded. Phillip then attempted to take control, urging Singleton to “talk about this in a way that is respectful.” “Okay, so, let me rephrase this since I’m being targeted here,” he said. “Just to be clear, you are not being targeted, I am specifically saying that I know that you are not intending to be transphobic,” responded Phillip. After being prompted to explain his reasoning again, Singleton began: “So the way regular people interpret it, which is why those ads were effective.” Michaelson interrupted: “That’s not regular people. That’s not regular people. There’s no consensus that these are actually boys. This whole thing about trans ****** is a canard. We’re talking about a tiny, tiny sliver of the population.” The table again fell into overlapping arguments, before Singleton began making his point for the third time. “My point in terms of its effectiveness. Regular people with children look at these things and they say, ‘You know what, this is a bit too far. I don‘t agree with this, I don’t like this, I think Democrats are going way too much to the left on social issues.’ They’re uncomfortable with it,” the *********** strategist said. “A lot of people believe that. A lot of families believe that. You may disagree with that reality, but that’s why Republicans kept running those ads over and over and over again, because they saw all the metrics suggested that they were working.” Michaelson responded: “And they lied in those ads over and over again, and using rhetoric like you just used, saying ‘this is boys playing girl’s sports.‘” Source link #CNN #Panelists #Engage #Screaming #Match #Trumps #AntiTrans #Ads Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Is Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) the Best Stock to Buy and Hold for 5 Years? Is Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) the Best Stock to Buy and Hold for 5 Years? We recently published a list of 10 Best Stocks to Buy and Hold For 5 Years. In this article, we are going to take a look at where Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) stands against other best stocks to buy and hold for 5 years. On November 7, Reuters reported that stocks in the ******* States were higher than usual after the Fed announced a 25 basis point rate cut, extending the rally fueled by the election results. The Fed decision came promptly after the job market showed signs of easing and inflation moved towards the Central Bank’s target of 2%. Most investors expect the new administration to ease taxes and regulations, all of which sparked all three of the major indexes. The S&P 500 and Dow, each logged their largest one-day percentage jumps in two years. Now that the elections are over, investors are keen to know how will markets perform amid election results. On November 8, Bethany McLean, contributing editor at Vanity Fair, joined Catalysts on Yahoo Finance to discuss why businesses may be optimistic as the new president takes over the White House. McLean emphasizes that investors foresee a myriad of benefits such as tax cut extensions, fewer regulations, and less aggressive antitrust oversight, all of which have sparked a surge in markets. Despite the possible benefits, she emphasizes it is difficult to predict what the administration is going to do at the moment. McLean expects the new administration to be friendlier with companies in the technology sector, however, she ******** fixated on waiting to see how the policies play out. She further adds that if any future policies made by the new administration negatively impact the stock market, she expects them to “switch course.” On the flip side, some analysts maintain that the easing cycle has a greater bearing on the stock market than the elections, hinting that value names may be more important as of now. On November 7, Arup Datta, senior vice president at Mackenzie Global Quantitative, joined Wealth! on Yahoo Finance to share his market thesis as the 2024 elections come to a close. Datta shares that he is extremely positive about the market but emphasizes that the win will have little impact on financial markets in the long term. Speaking of the magnificent seven, he adds focusing on quality names with positive growth and value for his investment portfolio helps him navigate the market in such conditions. He suggests that while the magnificent seven have been the talk of the town for the past 18 to 21 months, he would like to “pivot away” from that by a little. Historically, value stocks have performed better amid an easing cycle, adds Datta. Story Continues As the new administration settles in and the Fed initiates its second cut of the cycle, the near-term market will most likely remain volatile. Speaking of the future, some names happen to promise long-term growth due to their proprietary revolutionary technologies and crucial investments. That said, let’s take a look at the 10 best stocks to buy and hold for 5 years. Our Methodology To come up with the 10 best stocks to buy and hold for 5 years, we sifted through multiple similar rankings and compiled an initial list of 20 stocks. We then ranked the top 10 based on their hedge fund sentiment at the end of Q2 2024. Why are we interested in the stocks that hedge funds pile into? The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. Our quarterly newsletter’s strategy selects 14 small-cap and large-cap stocks every quarter and has returned 275% since May 2014, beating its benchmark by 150 percentage points (see more details here). Is Tesla, Inc. (TSLA) the Best Stock to Buy and Hold for 5 Years? A row of electric cars being charged simultaneously at a public charging station. Number of Hedge Fund Holders: 85 Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) is an automotive and clean energy company specializing in producing electric cars and solar-integrated renewable energy solutions. The company is one of the largest EV manufacturers in the ******* States. In the third quarter of 2024, Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) logged revenue worth $25.18 billion, up by 8% year-over-year. Automotive revenues accounted for most of the revenue, at $20.02 billion. Overall, revenue was driven by increasing vehicle deliveries. Previously, Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) launched a new lineup of electric vehicles to boost the launch of new models. Its new lineup and extensive production line will deliver over 3 million vehicles of capacity when optimized fully. Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) boasts solid growth potential over the next few years. On October 28, John Murphy, senior automotive analyst at Bank of America, appeared in an interview on Yahoo Finance to share his stance on TSLA. He states that Tesla is at the “next level” of electric and autonomous vehicles. Murphy suggests that the company is witnessing growing ****** margins which will be able to fund the future Tesla wants, potentially in the realms of self-driving and robotics. He adds that the company has a strong core and a solid “opportunity curve.” According to Murphy, he has “never seen a company like this before” and is pretty impressed with how the company is progressing, calling it a “real innovator.” Tesla’s (NASDAQ:TSLA) investments in AI make autonomous driving a reality, contributing to its position on our list. Tesla is poised for significant growth in the coming years because of its growing emphasis on AI. Baron Funds mentioned Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) in its Q2 2024 investor letter: “As discussed in the Fund’s prior shareholder letter, the fears about Tesla’s products were misplaced. Instead of the company being exclusively dependent on limited vehicle models and software advancement, the company announced it will more rapidly introduce products that appeal to a wider audience. It also demonstrated that its price reductions were the result of efficiencies rather than only to spur demand. Margins exceeded expectations. And the company’s integration of its hardware with proprietary AI software should facilitate full self-driving capabilities and subsequent new revenue streams. This integration of hardware with software creates a dynamic growth company as it more fully explores its potential with Optimus, humanoid robotics. The combination of these catalysts resulted in Tesla’s stock increasing meaningfully and rapidly in the second half of the quarter. This stock price momentum has continued into the next *******.” Overall, TSLA ranks 8th on our list of best stocks to buy and hold for 5 years. While we acknowledge the potential of TSLA to grow, our conviction ***** in the belief that certain AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns, and doing so within a shorter time frame. ********* climate agency says this will likely be the hottest year on record – again ********* climate agency says this will likely be the hottest year on record – again For the second year in a row, Earth will almost certainly be the hottest it’s ever been. And for the first time, the globe this year reached more than 1.5 degrees of warming compared to the pre-industrial average, the ********* climate agency Copernicus has said. “It’s this relentless nature of the warming that I think is is worrying,” Carlo Buontempo, director of Copernicus, said this week. Mr Buontempo said the data clearly shows the planet would not see such a long sequence of record-breaking temperatures without the constant increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere driving global warming. He cited other factors that contribute to exceptionally warm years like last year and this one. They include El Nino — the temporary warming of parts of the Pacific that changes weather worldwide — as well as volcanic eruptions that spew water vapor into the air and variations in energy from the sun. But he and other scientists say the long-term increase in temperatures beyond fluctuations like El Nino is a bad sign. “A very strong El Nino event is a sneak peek into what the new normal will be about a decade from now,” said Zeke Hausfather, a research scientist with the nonprofit Berkeley Earth. News of a likely second year of record heat comes a day after *********** Donald Trump, who has called climate change a “hoax” and promised to boost oil drilling and production, was reelected to the presidency. It also comes days before the next UN climate conference, called COP29, is set to begin in Azerbaijan. Talks are expected to focus on how to generate trillions of dollars to help the world transition to clean energes like wind and solar, and thus avoid continued warming. Buontempo pointed out that going over the 1.5 degree celsius threshold of warming for a single year is different than the goal adopted in the 2015 Paris Agreement. That goal was meant to try to cap warming at 1.5 degrees since pre-industrial times on average, over 20 or 30 years. A ******* Nations report this year said that since the mid-1800s on average, the world has already heated up 1.3 degrees — up from previous estimates of 1.1 degrees or 1.2 degrees. That’s of concern because the U.N. says the greenhouse gas emission reduction goals of the world’s nations still aren’t nearly ambitious enough to keep the 1.5 degree target on track. The target was chosen to try to stave off the worst effects of climate change on humanity, including extreme weather. “The heat waves, storm damage, and droughts that we are experiencing now are just the tip of the iceberg,” Natalie Mahowald, chair of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University, said. Going over that number in 2024 doesn’t mean the overall trend line of global warming has, but “in the absence of concerted action, it soon will,” said University of Pennsylvania climate scientist Michael Mann. Stanford University climate scientist Rob Jackson put it in starker terms. “I think we have missed the 1.5 degree window,” said Jackson, who chairs the Global Carbon Project, a group of scientists who track countries’ carbon dioxide emissions. “There’s too much warming.” Indiana state climatologist Beth Hall said she isn’t surprised by the latest report from Copernicus, but emphasised that people should remember climate is a global issue beyond their local experiences with changing weather. “We tend to be siloed in our own individual world,” she said. Reports like this one “are taking into account lots and lots of locations that aren’t in our backyard.” Mr Buontempo stressed the importance of global observations, bolstered by international cooperation, that allow scientists to have confidence in the new report’s finding: Copernicus gets its results from billions of measurements from satellites, ships, aircraft and weather stations around the world. He said that going over the 1.5 degree benchmark this year is “psychologically important” as nations make decisions internally and approach negotiations at the annual UN climate change summit from Monday in Azerbaijan. “The decision, clearly, is ours. It’s of each and every one of us. And it’s the decision of our society and our policymakers as a consequence of that,” he said. “But I believe these decisions are better made if they are based on evidence and facts.” Source link #********* #climate #agency #hottest #year #record Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

A man who paid $200.57 for a night at a famous NYC hotel and then lived there rent-free for years is unfit to stand trial, court says A man who paid $200.57 for a night at a famous NYC hotel and then lived there rent-free for years is unfit to stand trial, court says Mickey Barreto lived in the New Yorker Hotel for free for years before his recent arrest. Barreto faces 24 charges, including felony ******. Doctors found Barreto unfit for trial. A judge ordered him to undergo treatment. Doctors say a man who had lived inside the iconic New Yorker Hotel for free for more than half a decade is unfit to stand trial. Mickey Barreto lived in the New Yorker Hotel for years without paying a single cent in rent. The Manhattan District Attorney’s office said Barreto claimed ownership of the hotel building and even attempted to charge rent to another tenant. In February, police charged Barreto with filing fraudulent property records. Barreto now faces 24 charges, including 14 felony ****** counts. Over the summer, two doctors concluded that Barreto did not understand the ********* proceedings against him, and the court ordered him into outpatient mental health and addiction treatment to see if his mental condition would improve, The New York Times reported. At a hearing on Wednesday, New York City ********* Court Judge Cori Weston said she was unsatisfied with the rate of Barreto’s treatment and ordered him into inpatient care, according to the Times. Weston gave Barreto until November 13 to find a suitable facility. His next court appearance is scheduled for the same date, court records show. Brian Hutchinson, an attorney for Barreto, told the Times that he planned to ask Barreto’s current treatment provider, the Addiction Institute of Mount Sinai West, to accept him for inpatient care. “We’re all sort of in agreement that the substance ****** is leading to some of these other problems and making it impossible to move forward with the case,” Hutchinson told the outlet. Hutchinson and District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office did not immediately return requests for comment from Business Insider about Barreto’s mental evaluation. Barreto dismissed the allegation that he is addicted to drugs as “partying” and said that prosecutors want to hospitalize him because they do not have a case against him, The Associated Press reported. In June 2018, Barreto and his partner, Matthew Hannan, stayed in room 2565 at the New Yorker Hotel for one night and paid $200.57. Armed with knowledge of New York City’s Rent Stabilization Code, which grants tenants the right to request a six-month lease for individual rooms constructed before 1969, Barreto asked the hotel for a lease the next day. He was promptly evicted. The next month, Barreto filed a lawsuit in housing court against the building’s owner, the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity — which had purchased the hotel in 1976 — saying he was illegally evicted. Since no representative from the ******* appeared in court, the judge ruled in Barreto’s favor, ordering the hotel to provide him with a key. With no agreed-upon lease terms and unable to evict him, Barreto ended up living in the hotel rent-free. But free rent at an iconic hotel wasn’t enough for Barreto. The District Attorney’s office said Barreto later registered the hotel in his name with the Department of Environmental Protection to take control of its bank accounts and demanded rent from a commercial tenant. The Unification ******* filed a lawsuit in response. Although a judge ordered him to stop representing himself as the owner of the hotel, Barreto continued to live there for free. When Barreto filed papers with the city claiming ownership of the building again in 2023, the District Attorney’s office finally got involved. He faces several years behind bars if convicted, according to the Times. Spaniards protest over handling of flood disaster Spaniards protest over handling of flood disaster By Graham Keeley VALENCIA (Reuters) -Tens of thousands of people demonstrated in the eastern Spanish city of Valencia on Saturday over regional authorities’ handling of devastating floods that ******* more than 220 people in one of Europe’s worst natural disasters for decades. In the latest demonstration over the floods, protesters filled the centre of Valencia demanding the resignation of regional government leader Carlos Mazon and chanting “Killers!”. “Our hands are stained with mud, yours with blood,” read one banner. Some demonstrators dumped muddy boots outside the council building in protests. Residents in stricken areas accuse Mazon of issuing an alert too late, at 8 p.m. on Oct. 29, well after water was already pouring into many nearby towns and villages. The Valencian leader has said he would have issued an earlier alarm if central authorities including an official water monitoring body had given sufficient information about the seriousness of the situation. Mazon did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. “We want to show our indignation and anger over the poor management of this disaster which has affected so many people,” said Anna Oliver, president of Accio Cultural del Pais Valenciano, one of about 30 groups that organised the protest. The government put numbers at the rally around 130,000. Following days of storm warnings from the national weather service from Oct. 25 onward, some municipalities and local bodies raised the alarm much earlier than the regional government. For example, Valencia University told its staff on Oct. 28 not to come to work. Several town halls suspended activities, shut down public facilities and told people to stay home. Weather service AEMET raised its threat level for heavy rains in the area to a red alert at 7:36 a.m. on Oct. 29. Study challenges Einstein’s relativity theory, finds instability in ****** holes Study challenges Einstein’s relativity theory, finds instability in ****** holes In 1963, Roy Kerr, a New Zealand-based mathematician proposed a set of equations that explain the properties of rotating ****** holes as per Einstein’s theory of general relativity. These equations are collectively called the Kerr solution, and to this date, they represent one of the most accurate descriptions of rotating ****** holes. However, a new study reveals that ****** holes are filled with instabilities, and what Kerr proposed is possibly not 100 percent accurate, especially about the internal structure of ****** holes. “Our study implies that a ****** ***** cannot stabilize in Kerr geometry, at least over long timescales,” the study authors note. Kerry geometry refers to the mathematical description of the warped spacetime around a rotating but uncharged ****** *****. The inner instability of a ****** ***** The Kerr solution considers a ****** ***** as a structure with a power circular current that has two horizons. The first is the outer boundary known as the event horizon where the gravitational effect is so strong that it doesn’t let anything escape, not even light. The second inner horizon, called the Cauchy horizon has a core called ring singularity, a region that becomes infinitely strong, and space and time break down. Its unique ring shape comes from the ****** *****’s spin, which stretches the singularity into a ring rather than collapsing it into a point. “This model aligns well with observations, as deviations from Einstein’s theory outside the ****** ***** are regulated by new physics parameters, which govern the core’s size and are expected to be quite small,” the study authors said. Kerr’s geometry suggests that ****** holes can store a vast amount of energy. However, according to the new study, as the energy inside ****** holes increases, it can bring drastic changes in their structure, leading to instability over longer timescales and even in short timeframes. “This instability is due to an accumulation of energy that grows exponentially over time until it reaches a finite, but extremely large, value, capable of significantly influencing the overall geometry of the ****** ***** and thus altering it,” the study authors explain. This further indicates that ****** holes are not as stable as proposed by the theory of general relativity. A need for new theoretical models Scientists are still not sure what happens when the energy buildup inside a ****** ***** reaches its peak, but if such an event happens it clearly means that the Kerr solution doesn’t fully explain the science that governs ****** holes. “This result suggests that the Kerr solution, contrary to previous assumptions, cannot accurately describe observed ****** holes, at least on the typical timescales of their existence,” Stefano Liberati, one of the study authors and a professor at the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Italy, said. They also believe that further studies focusing on the inner world and the above-mentioned instability of ****** holes could give rise to new theoretical models that might overcome the limitations of the Kerr solution. “The internal dynamics of ****** holes, which remain largely uncharted, could radically transform our understanding of these objects, even from an external perspective,” Raúl Carballo-Rubio, first author of the study and a postdoc researcher at the University of Southern Denmark, said. The study is published in the journal Physical Review Letters. One monkey recovered, 42 others remain on the run in US One monkey recovered, 42 others remain on the run in US One of 43 monkeys bred for medical research that escaped a compound in the US state of South Carolina has been recovered unharmed, officials say. Many of the others are still located a few metres from the property, jumping back and forth over the facility’s fence, police said in a statement. The Rhesus macaques made a break for it on Wednesday after an employee at the Alpha Genesis facility in Yemassee did not fully lock a door as she fed and checked on them, officials said. The monkeys on Friday were exploring the outer fence of the Alpha Genesis compound and were cooing at the monkeys inside. The primates continued to interact with their companions inside the facility on Saturday, which is a positive sign, the police statement said. Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard relayed that efforts to recover all the animals will persist throughout the weekend and for as long as it takes, the statement said. The monkeys are about the size of a cat. They are all females weighing about 3kg. Alpha Genesis, US federal health officials and police all said the monkeys pose no risk to public health. The facility breeds the monkeys to sell to medical and other researchers. Alpha Genesis provides primates for research worldwide at its compound in Yemassee, about 80km northeast of Savannah, Georgia, according to its website. Warren Buffett Recommends Most Investors Buy This 1 Index Fund — and It Could Turn $200 per Month Into $227,000 or More Warren Buffett Recommends Most Investors Buy This 1 Index Fund — and It Could Turn $200 per Month Into $227,000 or More Investing in the stock market can be intimidating, especially if you’re a beginner. But it’s simpler than it might seem, even if you have little to no investing experience. Where you choose to invest is the most important decision you’ll need to make. Fortunately, there are plenty of investments that are well-suited for beginners and those who simply want a no-fuss option. Start Your Mornings Smarter! Wake up with Breakfast news in your inbox every market day. Sign Up For Free » While your investing choices are personal, there’s one option that comes highly recommended by billionaire investor Warren Buffett: The S&P 500 index fund. Here’s why it’s such a fantastic investment, and how you could earn hundreds of thousands of dollars while barely lifting a finger. Image source: The Motley Fool. First, it’s wise to know what, exactly, an S&P 500 index fund is and why it can make for a smart investment. An index fund, in general, is a collection of stocks that follows a particular market index. An S&P 500 index fund, then, tracks the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) and includes all the stocks within that index, mirroring its performance over time. Whether you’re new to the stock market or are just looking for a safer and more reliable investment, there are several advantages to investing in an S&P 500 index fund: Immediate diversification: By investing in just one S&P 500 index fund, you’ll instantly own a stake in stocks from 500 companies across a wide variety of industries. Greater diversification can lower your risk, and investing in an index fund makes it nearly effortless to diversify your portfolio properly. A large collection of strong stocks: The S&P 500 itself only includes stocks from the largest and strongest corporations in the U.S. — ranging from tech juggernauts like Apple and Microsoft to historic brands like Coca-Cola and Procter & Gamble. These companies are far more likely to survive periods of volatility, and when you’re investing in hundreds of them at once, you can rest easier knowing your portfolio is more protected. A fantastic track record: The S&P 500 has existed for many decades, and in that time it’s faced some of the worst crashes and recessions imaginable. Yet so far, it’s recovered from every single one. While nobody can predict the future, it’s extremely likely it will rebound from future slumps as well. Research also suggests that as long as you’re investing for at least a couple of decades, it’s incredibly unlikely that you’ll lose money. Story Continues Analysts at Crestmont Research studied the S&P 500’s historic performance over 20-year periods, finding that every single one of those periods ended in positive total returns. In other words, if you’d invested in an S&P 500 index fund at any point in history and held it for 20 years — no matter how volatile the market was in that time — you’d have made money. All these advantages make the S&P 500 a reliable yet powerful investment — so much so that it’s often recommended by Warren Buffett. “In my view, for most people, the best thing to do is to own the S&P 500 index fund,” Buffett said during Berkshire Hathaway’s 2020 annual meeting when discussing the ideal investment strategy for the average *********. Through Berkshire Hathaway, he also owns two S&P 500 funds himself: The Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO) and the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEMKT: SPY). In 2008, Buffett also famously bet $1 million that an S&P 500 index fund could beat a group of hedge funds over 10 years. The five hedge funds averaged returns of around 36% in that time, while Buffett’s S&P 500 fund earned nearly 126% returns. Even the highest-earning hedge fund only earned total returns of just under 88% in total. “Let me emphasize that there was nothing aberrational about stock market behavior over the ten-year stretch,” Buffett later wrote of the experiment in an annual letter to shareholders. He continued: “Seizing the opportunities then offered does not require great intelligence, a degree in economics or a familiarity with Wall Street jargon… What investors then need instead is an ability to both disregard mob fears or enthusiasms and to focus on a few simple fundamentals.” Like Buffett’s experiment proved, staying invested for the long haul pays off. While the market can be volatile in the short term, investing regularly for at least a decade or two can help you earn significant returns. Historically, the S&P 500 itself has earned an average rate of return of around 7% per year. Your returns will vary, of course, depending on how the market fares in the coming years. But let’s say you’re earning 7% average annual returns while investing $200 per month. Depending on how many years you invest, here’s approximately how much you could earn: Number of Years Total Portfolio Value 10 $33,000 20 $98,000 30 $227,000 40 $479,000 Data source: Author’s calculations via Investor.gov. Reaching $227,000 in total savings will require investing for around 30 years, but if you’re able to stay in the market just a little longer, you could earn exponentially more. The sooner you get started, then, the easier it will be to make a lot of money. The S&P 500 index fund can be a powerful way to invest with minimal effort, and with its exceptional long-term track record, it’s also a safer option than many other investments. By getting started investing now and staying in the market for the long haul, you could earn more than you might think. When our analyst team has a stock tip, it can pay to listen. After all, Stock Advisor’s total average return is 873% — a market-crushing outperformance compared to 176% for the S&P 500.* They just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy right now… See the 10 stocks » *Stock Advisor returns as of November 4, 2024 Katie Brockman has positions in Vanguard S&P 500 ETF. Social media a ‘scapegoat’ for poor mental health Social media a ‘scapegoat’ for poor mental health Social media is being used as something of a “scapegoat” for mental health issues in young people and isn’t what is making them feel depressed, anxious and driven to self-harm, says one of Australia’s leading medical research organisations. As the nation moves towards bans to protect under 16s from the harmful effects of online interaction, a new study by the ****** Dog Institute indicates the link between platforms and headspace is relatively weak. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Thursday a minimum age limit for social media access, telling parents “we have your back”. However the institute’s research indicates that although social media is a “fertile ground for disseminating harmful content”, evidence shows the parallel rise in its use and that of youth mental health problems does not imply a causal relationship. The study found the impact of social media on youth was less than universal, lacking in the results of longitudinal research and meta-analyses and unable to explain a disproportionate rise in self-harm in young women. Furthermore, restricting access to socials may also restrict access to support and information for young people experiencing problems. “If you ask young people why they are anxious or depressed, they don’t say ‘because of social media’, they say ‘it’s because my interpersonal relationship is not very good with my friends, I’ve lost my boyfriend, I’m really concerned about the way the world is’,” lead researcher Helen Christensen told AAP. “Social media is really a little bit of a scapegoat – the ******* problems youth are experiencing are broader things like access to good jobs, gendered *********, poor economic outcomes, fears of social change. “It’s these sorts of things that are preoccupying them and it’s not because of social media.” Removing access to that one element will not be a panacea for the broader societal influences causing the rising rates of self harm, Prof Christensen explains, though it is understandable that worried parents are looking for an link. “From a scientific point of view, we can see this does seem compelling but … this would mean in scientific terms people with higher social media (usage) would need to be showing higher anxiety and depression 12 months later in order to show that relationship,” she explains. “That’s when (the argument) starts to fall apart a bit… Really, we can’t blame social media.” It is natural for parents to want to protect kids from harm, be it drugs, alcohol or online bullying and exposure to undesirable content. Yet Prof Christensen says it’s important to remember 80 per cent of young people have no issues with social media and for many, its a source of useful information and community. “If you’re with a group of LGBTQI people, they will say to you that they use social media in order to make connections with people like them and it’s actually a comforting way of reaching out and finding people who feel the same way as they do,” she notes, adding that if the ban goes through, more research should be conducted as to whether it actually makes a difference. “There’s a two-sided coin here.” Limiting access may be ineffectual anyway, as children can “easily get around” bans and restrictions. The government is in the process of trialling a number of sophisticated methods of age verification to prevent that happening. Yet communications department officials overseeing the trials told Senate estimates in Canberra last week it ran the risk of pushing young people towards “darker websites”. Prof Christensen believes it would be far more effective to compel social media companies to better filter what appears on their platforms to ensure a safer environment: “Just like we want to create healthy schools.” Children’s organisation Act For Kids agrees, saying while the ban is a significant step forward, more must be done to hold social media companies accountable. “While we welcome this, there needs to be greater emphasis on social media giants and their own provisions to protect all children from online harm, regardless of their age,” according to CEO Dr Katrina Lines. “We also acknowledge there is not yet effective technology in place for age assurance or to verify parental consent.” Lifeline 13 11 14 beyondblue 1300 22 4636 Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800 (for people aged 5 to 25) Source link #Social #media #scapegoat #poor #mental #health Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
