ChatGPT rejected over 250,000 requests to generate images with President Biden, President-elect Trump, Vice President Harris, Vice President-elect Vance and Governor Walz, OpenAI said in a new report. The company explained that it’s a direct result of a safety measure it previously implemented so that ChatGPT would refuse to generate images with real people, including politicians. OpenAI has been preparing for the US presidential elections since the beginning of the year. It ***** out a strategy that was meant to prevent its tools from being used to help spread misinformation and made sure that people asking ChatGPT about voting in the US are directed to CanIVote.org. OpenAI said 1 million ChatGPT responses directed people to the website in the month leading up to election day. The chatbot also generated 2 million responses on election day and the day after, telling people who ask it for the results to check Associated Press, Reuters and other news sources. OpenAI made sure that ChatGPT’s responses “did not express political preferences or recommend candidates even when asked explicitly,” as well. Of course, DALL-E isn’t the only AI image generator out there, and there are plenty of election-related deepfakes going around social media. Aircraft were in the development stage, made of canvas over a wood frame and held together by something similar to piano wire. “They were underpowered. They were quite flimsy, and if you happened to land heavily, sometimes they would be damaged,” said J. Brent Wilson, a historian who has just published “War Among the Clouds: New Brunswick Airmen in the Great War.” Even training could be deadly for the pioneering pilots, he noted. About 22,000 Canadians served in the British air services during the First World War, mostly from well-educated families in Ontario and Western Canada, Wilson said in a recent interview. But at least 252 were from New Brunswick, many from small farming communities. As detailed in a new study published in the journal Astronomy & and Astrophysics, the tunnel exists as part of an enormous structure of hot gas with a radius of hundreds of light years that surrounds our solar system known as the Local Hot Bubble. What’s more, the findings suggest that it could connect with a nearby and even larger bubble. Using extensive data collected by the eROSITA telescope, the first x-ray observatory fully outside of the Earth’s atmosphere, the researchers generated a 3D model of the entire LHB, confirming some features that astronomers had predicted, but also uncovering entirely new ones. “What we didn’t know was the existence of an interstellar tunnel towards Centaurus, which carves a gap in the cooler interstellar medium,” said study coauthor Michael Freyberg, an astronomer at Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, in a statement. “This region stands out in stark relief thanks to the much-improved sensitivity of eROSITA and a vastly different surveying strategy compared to ROSAT,” the space telescope’s predecessor. Living in a Bubble The existence of the LHB, or simply the Local Bubble, was first proposed over fifty years ago to explain the pervasive presence of background x-ray radiation. Since the space between star systems is filled with diffuse clouds of gas and dust known as the interstellar medium — the stuff that coalesces to form stars — these low energy x-ray emissions should have been absorbed long before we could detect them. But what if our cosmic neck of the woods was empty for some reason? That would be the Local Bubble. Astronomers believe it formed some fourteen million years ago, when a chain of supernovas blew all nearby interstellar material away, creating a cavity around 1,000 light years in diameter. As evidence, we can see remnants of these supernovas today. The idea has faced challenges; decades ago, it emerged that an interaction between our Sun’s solar winds and our planet’s outer atmosphere could produce similar x-ray emissions, according to the researchers. But the idea has been further supported in recent years with observations of clusters of nascent stars forming on the border of this bubble. Tip of the Iceberg The authors suggest that the interstellar tunnel may be part of an entire interstellar medium network that spans the Milky Way, formed by blasts of energy released by stars. Along with the interstellar tunnel, the detailed modeling of the Local Bubble revealed a temperature gradient across the structure, with the northern region notably hotter than the southern one. This suggests that there may have been more recent supernovas that expanded the bubble and reheated its material, perhaps in the last few million years. Larger than the state of Florida, the icy mass contains so much water that scientists predict that its melting could single-handedly raise global sea levels by over two feet — and possibly over five times more that, if it triggers a broader collapse of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Two major studies this year have only heated up the debate around the glacier’s future, as highlighted in an article from Columbia University’s GlacierHub. While their conclusions differ on how quickly the Thwaites will melt, there is a consensus that it will eventually fully disappear, leaving the door open to ambitious, large-scale geoengineering projects, such as building an enormous barrier to keep out warm water, as being worth seriously considering. They may be desperate measures, but we need to start exploring them now, according to John Moore, a professor with the Arctic Center at the University of Lapland. “It will take 15 to 30 years for us to understand enough to recommend or rule out any interventions,” he told GlacierHub. Meltdown Breakdown A study published in May suggested that the Doomsday Glacier was more vulnerable to warming than once believed. Using extensive satellite imaging, the researchers discovered that high tides are intermittently lifting the Thwaites by a few centimeters, exposing its underbelly that would otherwise be protected by the seafloor. With this opening, warm seawater forces its way beneath the glacier, causing what the scientists dubbed “vigorous melting”: the intruding seawater dilutes the melting freshwater with salt, lowering the solution’s melting point and exacerbating the melt. The study predicted that the glacier could fully disappear by 2100. However, another paper published in August argued that this is unlikely, instead projecting that the glacier’s complete collapse will take place in the centuries following that. Nonetheless, researchers agreed that Thwaites’ rapid retreat would continue to accelerate, as it has been for the past thirty years. All Bets Off Scientists ***** that if the Thwaites disappears, it could trigger a collapse of the entire West Antarctic ice sheet (WAIS), potentially raising sea levels by over ten feet. As it stands, the Doomsday glacier already contributes to about four percent of rising levels on Earth. Barring an immediate societal shift away from burning fossil fuels, we might want to try a technological solution to slow the melt. One idea scientists have proposed is surrounding Thwaites and other vulnerable glaciers with huge, 62-mile-long curtains to block the warm ocean water. Far-fetched, perhaps, but there is serious research into this underway. “For some polar tipping points like Arctic sea ice and the WAIS, glacial geoengineering seems to be the only way for us to more or less guarantee that we can address these tipping points,” Gernot Wagner, a climate economist at Columbia Climate School told GlacierHub. Geoengineering projects, though, tend to catch flak for distracting from the real solution of eliminating carbon emissions. Nearly 600,000 trout grown by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission ***** at a McDowell County hatchery during the rains brought by Hurricane Helene, the state agency has reported. Landslides and flooding around the Armstrong State Fish Hatchery north of Marion compromised the water quality to the facility’s raceways, or tanks, and hatchery building. “Extensive repairs” will be necessary to repair the facility, but Wildlife Resources Commission officials are still evaluating the damage. “We lost the facility. The facility’s going to need to be rebuilt, but we lost not only this year’s fish but next year’s fish, too,” said Corey Oakley, the assistant chief of the Wildlife Resources Commission’s Fisheries Management Program. The Armstrong Hatchery is responsible for stocking trout in public waters across an 11-county region in Western North Carolina. Typically, Armstrong raises 20% to 30% of the trout that North Carolina stocks in a given year, Oakley said. It’s likely, he added, that the damage to Armstrong will result in fewer trout being stocked, but the exact impact isn’t clear yet. There are 36 raceways at the hatchery, which typically draws cold, clear water from the Armstrong Creek watershed. The Wildlife Resources Commission grows brook, brown and rainbow trout there. During Helene, Armstrong Creek flooded substantially, destroying all of the pipes that drew water from the creek into the raceways. The pipes that make up that system were either washed away, damaged or disconnected by the rushing water, Oakley said. Most of the damage was inflicted over about an hour-long ******* during the storm, Oakley said. In addition to the pipes, the floods destroyed more than a mile of roads that run through the facility along the creek. “What we ended up with in the raceways was either no flowing water because the raceways were high and dry because the pipes got busted and the water couldn’t come into the system or we had raceways that had muddy water that was coming into the system,” Oakley said. Either situation was lethal for trout, which depend on clean, oxygenated water. The vast majority of the fish that were being grown at Armstrong ***** in the raceways, either from lack of water or from muddy water entering the system, Oakley said. Their carcasses will be scooped out eventually and ******* somewhere on the facility. It takes fish about two years to grow enough that they can be moved from the tanks to the wild. When Helene hit, there were trout at Armstrong as small as a couple of inches and as large as 14 inches. Some of those fish would have been stocked this fall, Oakley said, while others would have been stocked in the spring and even more next fall. “We lost a whole production system, basically. We didn’t just lose right now,” Oakley said. Oakley found a note of optimism, though, for Western North Carolina’s wild trout population. Helene’s flooding scoured creeks and rivers throughout Western North Carolina, creating rocky habitats with very little silt where trout thrive. There is a good chance, Oakley said, that those habitats will lead to larger spawns in the near future. “In a year to two years we probably will have a really great trout spawn in our mountain region,” Oakley said. Trout fishing in Western North Carolina has a $1.38 billion economic impact, according to a report the Wildlife Resources Commission released last year. The report estimated that about 370,000 people fished for trout in North Carolina in 2022, with the typical angler making nine fishing trips. As part of the effort to make up for some of the lost fish, the Wildlife Resources Commission is delaying a planned renovation at the Setzer State Fish Hatchery in Transylvania County, which was supposed to start in 2025. That project will be held off until the Armstrong Hatchery has returned to full operations, Wildlife Resources Commission spokeswoman Fairley Mahlum wrote in a press release. Oakley estimated that repairs to Armstrong’s pipes, roads and water oxygenation system could take between 12 and 18 months, depending on whether workers are available. Once the facility is rebuilt, trout will be added back into the tanks and given time to acclimate to the water there. Dan Houser, the revered longtime writer and producer behind both Grand Theft Auto and Red ***** Redemption, had consistently turned down opportunities to adapt these games for film or television. Speaking to The Ankler, Houser recently revealed that Rockstar had received numerous pitches over the years, but they always saw these potential adaptations as too risky. The studio was protective of their multi-billion-dollar franchises, and given the historically poor track record of video game movies, they feared that bad adaptations could do more harm than good. “They thought we’d be blinded by the lights and that just wasn’t the case,” Houser explained, highlighting how the economics and risks never made sense to them, especially during an era when video game adaptations were largely considered box office poison. We had what we considered to be multi-billion-dollar IP, and the economics never made sense. The risk never made sense. With successful adaptations like The Witcher, The Last of Us, and, most recently, Fallout proving that gaming properties can be translated effectively into compelling TV series, and films like The Super Mario Bros. In its annual financial report, Games Workshop opened up about the deal giving the video-on-demand streaming giant the rights to the Warhammer 40k series and film sets, with an option to get rights in the Warhammer Fantasy universe after the debut of the initial production. Back in December 2023, the British company announced that it was going to give Amazon one year until December 2024 to discuss and agree upon creative guidelines. The company added that the project would only proceed ahead if creative guidelines were mutually agreed upon by Amazon and Games Workshop. This leaves Amazon with just one month to make the final decision. Henry Cavill previously shared his excitement for Amazon’s adaptation of the Warhammer project. He called it the “greatest privilege” of his career and stated that he’s committed to bringing the unique universe to life on screen. Considering it’s Cavill’s childhood dream, Amazon and Games Workshop will eventually agree upon the creative guidelines before the year ends. Even if Amazon doesn’t materialize anything, Cavill and Games Workshop can always approach another streaming giant, such as Netflix, to get the project going. However, if it’s looking to achieve the same success as Bethesda’s Fallout TV series, it must make Space Marine as relatable as possible. It’s great to see them steamrolling through enemies, but their nature has attracted a lot of criticism from fans as they can’t be sympathized with or be related to. While developing Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2, developer Saber Interactive knew about this issue and decided to soften the mentality of Space Marines. The developers carefully gave them more human qualities to make them appealing to players. Making Space Marines less authoritarian certainly helped the game as it gained recognition among fans and rose to the top of Steam charts. Let’s hope that Cavill and his team can also recognize these issues with Space Marines and make the necessary changes to add a layer of reliability and appeal to them. Ask the Edmonton Oilers. When The Athletic polled its NHL staff for 2024-25 predictions in the preseason, Connor McDavid was the prohibitive favorite for the Hart Trophy, and his team was the front-runner to win the Stanley Cup. Now? Well, the Oilers are the top pick in another category, but it’s not a good one. A new team takes the top spot for who we think will win it all, and another Western Conference superstar — who didn’t get any votes in the preseason — is our Hart Trophy pick. What else has changed? This week, we polled staffers on the same set of questions we asked in the preseason. Here’s how our expectations for 2024-25 have already evolved, with expert analysis and critique from senior writers James Mirtle and Sean Gentille, analytics know-it-all Shayna Goldman and NHL ******** expert Jesse Granger. Who will win the Stanley Cup? Goldman: The Stars are the quietly effective, balanced team of all of our dreams. It’s no surprise to see them at the top here — especially after the Oilers have gotten off to another iffy start. It’s not as dramatic or dire as last year, but they aren’t inspiring a ton of confidence yet. Granger: I personally chose the Rangers, but it’s hard to argue with any of the top three picks here. The Stars are as complete of a team as there is in the league right now, and the Rangers and Panthers look like they’re in their own tier in the East, at least early. Gentille: I rarely bail on my preseason Cup picks *******, let alone after a month, but I’m concerned enough with Stuart Skinner to deviate from protocol. Hello, Dallas. Mirtle: I have company with the ‘Canes now! A 10-2-0 start, offensive ********** (more than four goals per game) and Martin Nečas arriving certainly help embiggen their case. Goldman: Apparently it’s win or bust for the Hurricanes and Panthers! I went with the Lightning here, who look a lot stronger than the last couple of seasons. With a pair of seconds and fourths in the 2025 draft, management should be able to address their depth — as long as they don’t spend all their picks on a player like, I don’t know, Tanner Jeannot. Granger: It’s interesting to see how little the ****** in Edmonton has wavered after the 6-7-1 start, both in this poll and in the ******** odds. The Oilers are still the favorites to win the Cup at +700 despite currently sitting in fifth place in the Pacific Division standings with the third-fewest goals scored per 60 minutes. Gentille: Yeah, I’m sticking with the Rangers here. They’ve got an elite goaltender in Igor Shesterkin, a Hart candidate in Artemi Panarin and enough five-on-five substance to keep me on the train. Mirtle: No one be-Leafs anymore, after a tepid eight wins in 15 games start. (I don’t blame them.) I went with the Jets here, as with Connor Hellebuyck this dialed in, they could have a nice run. The Sharks had the worst record in the league last season. This year, things are just as bleak. (Michael Reaves / Getty Images) Who will finish in last place? Goldman: The Sharks, even without Macklin Celebrini, have had some interesting games lately … but we all know where their season is going. The big difference between them and the Ducks? Lukáš Dostál. Granger: I thought the Sharks would be significantly better this season, and so far that’s proven to be very wrong. They obviously don’t have the talent to compete with the best teams, but they also sit back so passively on defense, letting teams pass the puck around the outside almost as if they’re on a power play for the majority of the game. Gentille: San Jose needs to call up Yaroslav Askarov (.950 save percentage in his first six AHL games) to make this one interesting. Mirtle: The Habs might make this one interesting if they keep playing this way defensively. Two wins in their last 11 games doesn’t look like a blip. Who will be the biggest disappointment? Must be projected at 100-plus points by Dom Luszczyszyn’s model at the start of the season. Projected point total in parentheses. Granger: The top three teams are all in this spot thanks to subpar goaltending. The difference between the three is that Alexandar Georgiev and Skinner have long enough track records for me to believe they’ll eventually regress back to being league-average goalies. Meanwhile, it’s looking less likely Thatcher Demko is stepping through that door to save the Canucks, so I’m most worried about Vancouver. Mirtle: No love for Kevin Lankinen! He’s been excellent, and the Canucks’ underlying numbers are solid. Their backup is hurting them (.797 save percentage for Artūrs Šilovs), but with Demko joining the main group at practice this week, they could be fine? Granger: You might be right. Maybe I’m not giving Lankinen enough credit. He was excellent against the Kings on Thursday, and his numbers are great. I’m still a bit skeptical that will continue for an entire season, but if Demko returns soon it’ll change my mind in a hurry. Gentille: Carolina is currently playing at a 137-point pace. Whoops! Goldman: The Oilers bounced back from worse last year, so maybe that’s why I am not super worried there. Maybe the Maple Leafs should be higher. Or we all expect them to disappoint us, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if it happened. Who’s your dark horse Cup contender? Must be projected as a middle-of-the-pack team, between 85 and 100 points by Dom’s model at the start of the season. Projected point total in parentheses. Goldman: The Wild and Capitals have gotten off to better-than-expected starts, which makes them dark-horse playoff teams. But contenders? I don’t think anyone sees them standing in the final four in the spring. That’s what separates them from the Jets, Devils, Lightning and Golden Knights. Granger: I’m still alone on the Senators bandwagon, but I’m still comfortable despite the middling start. Ottawa is scoring at a good pace, and the goaltending has been better than the numbers suggest. They’re not as good as Tampa Bay or Vegas, but I find it hard to consider them dark horses. Gentille: The Lightning are a bit of a riser here, which makes sense. They’re getting secondary production from their forwards, and that was a huge issue for them last season. Mirtle: Sticking with Vegas. They’re riding a ********* percentage bender, sure, but offense sure doesn’t look like it’ll be the issue some thought it was this season. Pavel Dorofeyev has arrived. Granger: The Flames are playing some fun, high-event hockey, and both Dustin Wolf and Dan Vladar are off to good starts in net. More than anything, I just think the Pacific Division is the easiest to earn a playoff spot in. Gentille: Ideally, we could’ve left this one blank, but I can see the Blues making a run once Robert Thomas is back in the lineup. Mirtle: Yeah, this really feels like none of the above at this point. Good for Columbus, though; finally feels like they’re building something interesting there. They’ve been fun to watch. Goldman: The door should be open for Detroit here with the Islanders, Penguins and Bruins all going through it, but … nope, the vibes are simply off there as well. Mike Sullivan would be purely for a change of direction. A team with Derek Lalonde at the helm shouldn’t be this bad defensively. But I personally went with Jim Montgomery. The Bruins look lost in the early goings of the season and are seeing their playoff chances trend down by the day at this point. Gentille: Gotta say, I did not expect to see Montgomery challenging for the crown here. I still think it’s Lalonde, though. If Detroit’s power play goes cold for a protracted amount of time, things are gonna get ugly in a hurry. Mirtle: I second Montgomery. It’s not so much Boston’s record, which isn’t great. They’ve been as bad defensively as we’ve seen in … 20 years? And even David Pastrňák looks out of sorts now. East playoff field We asked each voter to pick the eight East playoff teams. Here is the percentage of the votes received by each team. (*-playoff team in 2023-24) Granger: There seems to be a pretty clear cutoff after the top eight teams, both in these poll results and the ******** odds. Boston is still a -135 favorite to make the playoffs despite the slow start, while the next-closest team (Ottawa) is a slight +110 underdog to make it. Gentille: Eight-for-eight thus far. End the season immediately. Mirtle: One vote for Ottawa for me. They’ve looked really good lately and managed to nab some points when Linus Ullmark was out of the lineup. Maybe ease up on those Travis Hamonic minutes a bit, though, Mendes. Goldman: The East feels somewhat decided besides that eighth seed. Boring! West playoff field We asked each voter to pick the eight West playoff teams. Here is the percentage of the votes received by each team. (*-playoff team in 2023-24) Granger: What a fall for Nashville, from 92.9 percent to 32.3 percent in only a month of hockey. The Predators are still favorites to make the playoffs according to the oddsmakers, though. Gentille: I love what the Kings are doing. They’re a top-10 five-on-five team, and that bodes well for them snagging one of the wild cards, especially given how lost Nashville has looked. Mirtle: The rise of the Wild could make the West race pretty dull. I have a hard time seeing any of the bottom seven get in at this point. Prove me wrong, Utahns! Goldman: Time to cancel another trip to Sphere or something to get Nashville back in this race. Utah had a lot of momentum early on and wow, did it fade quickly. Hart Trophy Given to the player judged to be the most valuable to his team. Voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA). Gentille: It’s worth noting that we voted while Connor McDavid was on the shelf, and he wound up missing a grand total of three games. At 6.5 percent, he came in a little light. Mirtle: Kirill Kaprizov is a fine choice, but I think we’re chasing the shiny new toy here a bit. Nikita Kucherov and Nathan MacKinnon have been amazing lately and are going to make this one interesting, I think. Goldman: No disagreements with Kaprizov and Kucherov leading the way, but goalies (and Shesterkin, specifically) should be in the conversation more often. He didn’t get any votes, but I feel it necessary to point out that Tage Thompson leads the league with nine five-on-five goals. If Buffalo’s power play gets it together, he should have a shot. Goldman: Hughes is having such an excellent start that he probably should be getting more hype. No shade to Makar, who rightfully leads the way here. It just feels like it should be a bit tighter. Gentille: I’d love to see Carbery stay in the discussion here. Too many Jack Adams candidates are propped up by overachieving goalies, and that hasn’t been the case in D.C. They’re across-the-board good. Mirtle: Carbery was pegged by a lot of organizations as a rising star after what he did as an assistant in Toronto, and that’s definitely playing out right now. Few saw this kind of a rise from the Capitals, who suddenly look very legit. Great hire by Brian MacLellan. Granger: The Senators aren’t quite playing well enough for Travis Green to fly up this list, but I like what he’s doing with that young team. Calder Trophy Given to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the NHL. Voted on by the PHWA. Gentille: As I type this, Matvei Michkov has been healthy-scratched. It was bound to happen at some point, I suppose. Goldman: The Sharks scored more than expected without Macklin Celebrini, so if they can build on it with him back in the fold (he scored two goals on Thursday), he could emerge as the favorite. His line has been great defensively, and his point-per-game pace isn’t percentage-driven. He’s going to have a great career. Granger: Stankoven was so good in the playoffs last year and has rolled it right into this season.
