  2. D-Link refuses to patch a security flaw on over 60,000 NAS devices — the company instead recommends replacing legacy NAS with newer models D-Link refuses to patch a security flaw on over 60,000 NAS devices — the company instead recommends replacing legacy NAS with newer models Security researcher Netsecfish discovered a critical flaw in several popular D-Link NAS models that could allow an unauthenticated attacker to ******** a command injection ******* via an HTTP GET request. According to Netsecfish’s Notion site (h/t BleepingComputer), the vulnerability is in the account_mgr.cgi script, where they could add the malicious input in the name parameter to ******** the exploit. This issue is tracked in the National Vulnerability Database (NVD) as CVE-2024-10914 and declared a critical flaw with a severity score 9.2. The following D-Link models are affected by the issue: DNS-320 Version 1.00, DNS-320LW Version 1.01.0914.2012, DNS-325 Version 1.01, Version 1.02, and DNS-340L Version 1.08. Unfortunately for the users of these devices, D-Link declined to release a security patch for this issue, noting that “Products that have reached their EOL/EOS no longer receive device software updates and security patches and are no longer supported by D-Link.” The affected models have all reached their end-of-life/end-of-service date as of 2020, and “D-Link US recommends retiring and replacing D-Link devices that have reached EOL/EOS.” Netsecfish conducted an FOFA of the affected D-Link models, and the platform returned 61,147 results with 41,097 unique IP addresses. Although the NVD says that the ******* complexity might be high and exploiting the vulnerability is difficult, anyone with the knowledge and capability could theoretically access any of these publicly available D-Link NAS machines. If you’re using one of these models, it’s highly recommended that you replace your NAS system with one that’s still receiving patches from the manufacturer. If that isn’t possible right now, Netsecfish suggests restricting access to your NAS settings menu/interface to only trusted IP addresses. You could also isolate your NAS from the public internet to ensure that only authorized users can interact with it. Alternatively, you could look for third-party firmware supporting the affected hardware. However, you must ensure you download the firmware from a trusted source. But if you think it’s time to get a new NAS for your home, office, or business, you should check out our list of the best NAS before picking one to install. 4. The Enigma of the Thracians and the Orphic Mysteries The Enigma of the Thracians and the Orphic Mysteries The Thracians worshiped Ares, the **** of war, Sabazios, the sky father ****, and had ****** in the Sun, son of the goddess Bendis, the incarnation of perfection and immortality. The most popular cults were the Dionysian mysteries, which surely came to Greece from Thrace, along with the cult of Orpheus and the Orphic mysteries. (Read Part 1 here) Following Orpheus’ footsteps, I ascended to the top of a mountain to the ruins of an abandoned place called Perperikon in southern Bulgaria. It is a real city-temple, which can still be seen in the stone altars, which were part of a temple dedicated to the **** of wine and ******* ecstasy known by the Greeks as Dionysus, and Bacchus by the Romans. It is the most sacred and important place dedicated to the Dionysian cult, which consisted of ******* ******* and sacrifices. But Orpheus, who according to legend had been a disciple of Dionysus, argued against these practices in the name of Apollo, the **** of reason. According to ancient legend, this act of defiance resulted in his conviction and ******* at the hands of the maenads, the female followers of Dionysus. The ancient site of Perperikon, Bulgaria. (Anton Lefterov/CC BY-SA 4.0) Some archaeologists maintain that the Thracian’s musician **** could have been a real character who resided in the Bulgarian Rhodope Mountains and that he would have been a Dionysian priest who had access to hidden knowledge of Egyptian and oriental sages. His cult proclaimed asceticism, was against sacrifice, and taught the transmigration of souls and mankind’s capacity to experience the divine, although they had to be initiated in order to learn to break free and rise in a state of “happy immortality”. Without being initiated, one could not experience happiness in the afterlife. The Greek poet Sappho of Lesbos wrote a poem referring to a woman who ***** without having access to the Orphic mysteries: “After you ****, you will lie without anyone remembering or missing you with sorrow, because you did not enjoy the roses of Pieria. You will be ignored, as well, in the house of Hades, floating wandering among the dark deceased”. Was Sappho a follower of the Orphic mysteries? Possibly yes. Candidates had to be accepted into the Orphic mysteries, which were esoteric and only disclosed to those who managed to be initiated. The initiates were required to then save and protect the knowledge they were taught. Sappho’s poems speak of reverence to the Orphic religion on more than one occasion, for instance, in one she speaks of rising over the affliction of ******, considering it a sin to lament at the Muses’ Home, because as she said: “I’d rather **** listening to this song (Orpheus with his lyre)…”. According to mythology, Orpheus descended into the underworld to retrieve his ***** wife, Eurydice, and did so through the ******’s Throat, a ***** in the Rhodope Mountains, south-eastern Bulgaria. I went there looking for answers. The ******’s Throat *****. (Author Mado Martinez provided) In the ancient legend, the ******’s Throat is Hades’ domain, and it was because of this journey into the domain of ****** that Orpheus was transformed. Before that, he had only been a great musician, but he returned as a prophet and brought all the knowledge to the Thracians, centuries before *******. When the Christians came to the Thracian lands, they wanted to establish their ****** and in doing so, they adopted some figures of the Orphic local mythology. Orpheus leading Eurydice from the Underworld. Jean Baptiste Camille Corot (1796-1875). (Public Domain) The Bulgarian Orthodox ******* follows doctrines explained by the ancient creeds of the apostles, which describe *******’s descent into Hades to defeat ****** and liberate the righteous, a foundational belief in Orthodox theology. Here, we see some parallels in the accounts of both Orpheus and ******. They both had to descend to the depths of *****, to “****” and come back to life transformed. They both preached that humans have souls that would be judged at the moment of ****** and would pay for their actions. They both practiced ceremonies that included rituals such as turning water into wine. Furthermore, the brutal ******* of Orpheus was considered a sacrifice to redeem mankind for its sins. The similarities are interesting to say the least. Top image: Orpheus surrounded by animals. Ancient Roman floor mosaic, from Palermo, now in the Museo archeologico regionale di Palermo. 5. Microsoft persuades Mail and Calendar users to migrate to Outlook — Mail and Calendar app will cease to work after December 31 Microsoft persuades Mail and Calendar users to migrate to Outlook — Mail and Calendar app will cease to work after December 31 Microsoft is notifying its Mail and Calendar app users to switch to free web-based Outlook. Many users have reported noticing pop-ups from the app. Microsoft insists users make the migration by December 31, 2024. After that date, the app will only display emails and calendar entries saved until the scheduled date. The company published a support document emphasizing that the Mail and Calendar app will switch to read-only mode for old data after December 31, 2024. Microsoft, however, will allow existing data, including emails, contacts, and events, to be exported to the Outlook option. Microsoft advertises its free Outlook option as having ‘core Outlook security features’ with 15GB mailbox storage and 5GB cloud storage, web and mobile apps available, and paid options for larger cloud-based storage and support. Despite this request, Microsoft allows users to toggle to its Mail and Calendar app through Settings > General > About Outlook. The option to roll back is puzzling, considering there are only a few weeks left before the standalone app is rendered unusable. Users, therefore, have no option other than to use the cloud-based Outlook or switch to other apps. Many shifted to Mozilla’s Thunderbird and will likely use it as a replacement. Microsoft has warned its users that it will eventually have its Mail & Calendar app users switch to the open-source option for better security, but switching to a cloud-based app feels forced. It should also be no surprise that Microsoft’s standalone apps occasionally have issues, especially those affecting power users. Only three days ago, users noticed that its Classic Outlook app crashed when they opened more than 60 emails simultaneously. Irrespective of Microsoft’s final decision and claims that users get ‘the best of Outlook,’ many do not like migrating to a cloud-based app and interface changes, primarily because they have been using the interface for a very long time, which has been available through previous iterations of the operating system spanning more than two decades. The difference between the experience of a standalone app and a cloud-based option is very noticeable. Hence, the decision to axe a reliable option leaves a bad taste among users, as the experience is not seamless and does not have the same functions. Microsoft will unlikely reconsider this decision as it did in the past, leaving no other option but to use different apps available or to make a point via its store. 11. This Raspberry Pi-powered chess board ****** moves pieces automatically This Raspberry Pi-powered chess board ****** moves pieces automatically Gaming on the Raspberry Pi is one of those go-to pairings that is here to stay. But where most people think of emulating and playing games digitally on the Pi, other makers, like Tamerlan, take things further by creating interactive games in the physical world. Using our favorite SBC, Tamerlan has developed an automated chessboard that moves pieces around the board. This chess board is programmed with several different game modes. You can play against a computer or connect to the internet and play against other real players remotely, with the board emulating their moves for you in real life. Pieces are moved using magnets attached to an XY stepper motor system underneath. The Raspberry Pi is responsible for more than just moving pieces; it has to process where the pieces are and determine the best path from point A to point B. Different pieces have different weights, which impacts the movement process. If not done correctly, pieces will fall and won’t reach the appropriate square on the board. Tamerlan has been kind enough to share plenty of details about the build process, detailing the current iteration and the trials and errors along the way. Currently, the system uses a stepper motor to operate an XY grid using 3D-printed components and a series of rails for stability. The piece grabber is an electromagnet, but Tamerlan plans to replace it with a different mechanism. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Tamerlan) (Image credit: Tamerlan) Tamerlan is also responsible for programming the software, which requires much more than just the rules of chess. Logistics are involved in managing where the pieces are and what the best way is for them to move. For example, you could move pieces out of the way before moving the one you want, but Tamerlan discovered he could use half steps to scoot pieces in between others. When asked how pieces take others, he confirmed they are just knocked over and must be picked up manually. However, this could be changed in future iterations. If you want to get a closer look at this Raspberry Pi project in action, you can check it out on YouTube and explore the project details on this project page created by Tamerlan. He also learned to read the Greek language, which he spoke at home (although he never wrote in Greek). He also met his future wife in Greek school, a Greek-********* girl named Diana Perparos, whose father John owned several dry cleaning and shoe repair stores in Chicago. A Dream of Kings In 1966 Petrakis made his first international success with the appearance of his novel A Dream of Kings, which won him a nomination for the National Book Award for Fiction for the second year in a row. The lead role of Leonidas Matsoukas was played by actor Anthony Quinn, already familiar to Americans from having played Zorba in the earlier film Zorba the Greek. Maryland hunters go the extra mile to illegally bait bears Maryland hunters go the extra mile to illegally bait bears Authorities in Maryland cited nine hunters for illegally using bait during the state’s recent five-day season for ****** bears. But it was the extent of baiting and variety of items that stood out in a news release issued Friday by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. One hunter was issued two citations after he admitted to hunting from a stand overlooking an area baited with bacon grease, chicken grease, corn, molasses, vanilla icing, and licorice. As if that weren’t enough, the hunter also possessed an ******** “bear *****” spray to help lure bears to within ********* range. In another case, two hunters were cited after hunting from separate stands over an area baited with cracked corn kernels and grease or lard spread onto a tree trunk near their stands. Two other hunters, including an 84-year-old, hunted over a site baited with corn dispersed as close as 10 yards from their elevated blinds. Another hunter was found to have used bacon grease, corn, apple peelings, and apple processing waste placed between 23 and 50 yards from his ******. In yet another case, two hunters from Pennsylvania were cited for utilizing a site baited with dog food, animal carcasses, apples, syrup, strawberry jam, and shelled corn. It was made clear before this year’s hunt, which concluded Oct. 26, that the use of bait or hunting near previously baited areas was prohibited. (The use of bait while hunting white-tailed deer is legal on private property in Maryland.) According to the Maryland DNR, 950 hunters were randomly selected via lottery to participate in the annual ****** bear hunting season. 14. Intel reportedly denies RMA for crashing Core i9-14900K CPU due to liquid metal thermal paste usage — liquid metal erased the markings and serial number on the CPU Intel reportedly denies RMA for crashing Core i9-14900K CPU due to liquid metal thermal paste usage — liquid metal erased the markings and serial number on the CPU If you own an Intel 13th Generation Raptor Lake or 14th Generation Raptor Lake Refresh CPU, you may want to think twice before using liquid metal as a thermal paste. The latest report from HKEPC claims that Intel has reportedly denied an RMA request for a Core i9-14900K due to the usage of liquid metal. The Core i9-14900K owner had reportedly approached Synnex, a retailer in Hong Kong, to RMA his 24-core Raptor Lake Refresh chip because it had suffered from the infamous instability issues. However, the retailer had gotten back to the owner with a negative response, claiming that Intel had rejected the RMA because it didn’t comply with the requirements. Apparently, the liquid metal had corroded the processor’s integrated heat spreader (IHS), removing the chip’s markings, including the processor model, batch number (FPO), and 2D Matrix (ATPO). It’s not an excuse that Intel suddenly made up on the spot, either. The chipmaker has it in writing that using Liquid Metal Thermal Interface Material (LMTIM) can void the processor’s warranty. Due to liquid metal’s corrosive nature, it may remove the markings on the Intel processor, which are essential during the verification process for warranty claims. Liquid metal usage has proliferated over the last few years. Because it incorporates different metal alloys, liquid metal offers excellent thermal conductivity that exceeds the cooling performance of standard thermal paste. However, liquid metal is electrically conductive, so improper application can ***** your components—for example, if the liquid metal drips over to capacitors on the chip or the pins. Liquid metal reacts differently to different materials, such as copper, nickel, or aluminum. For instance, liquid metal and aluminum don’t gel, so vendors recommend using a copper heatsink. Modern processors come with a nickel-plated copper IHS, so there’s no problem with liquid metal. However, it will “stain” the IHS and obfuscate the markings if given enough time. That’s why, in the Core i9-14900K’s case, the liquid metal didn’t ***** the Raptor Lake Refresh chip but rather eroded the surface. Using liquid metal isn’t worth the risk for the average consumer. It’s great for lowering CPU temperatures if you’re a ********* enthusiast who likes to overclock and wants to maximize cooling. If that’s the case, you’d probably want to delid the chip and replace the TIM with liquid metal rather than just applying it on the surface of the IHS. However, in an interview with The Washington Post, Xbox Chief Phil Spencer opened up about the exclusivity of certain Xbox titles, such as Starfield, and stated that he’s looking to change that. I spent a lot of time thinking about how the game industry is going to grow, and my view is that it grows if there’s less friction of a player anywhere wanting to find their game, and closed platforms create real barriers to that Microsoft’s initiative to break console exclusivity started earlier this year with four games. Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, and Pentiment all have PlayStation ports. Even Xbox’s Call of Duty: ****** Ops 6 dropped on PS4 and PS5 as well. Rumors suggest that Microsoft is planning to get more aggressive with ports, with even Starfield jumping ship to PS5 soon. Time will tell if there’s any truth to such rumors, but it’s great to see that Spencer recognizes the need to break the barriers and unite all gamers to experience the best titles out there. Starfield Might See a Sequel Down the Road Bethesda might follow up the space-RPG with a sequel. (Image via Microsoft) It seems like Bethesda wants to learn from the mistakes of the first Starfield and present us with a sequel that wins our hearts. In an interview with Video Gamer, former Bethesda developer Bruce Nesmith opened up about Starfield and stated that it’s destined to serve as an excellent path for a future RPG. Nesmith believes that the first couple of entries in any series tend to be rough around the edges while still showing hope, thus serving as a crucial tool for any franchise to kickstart. That’s what he believes will happen with Starfield. Although he’s convinced that Starfield will eventually get a sequel, the chance of that happening anytime soon is quite low. Currently, The Elder Scrolls 6 is Bethesda and Todd Howard’s top priority. Once that project sees the light of the day, Bethesda will start working on Fallout 5. If the AAA game development ******* doesn’t get any longer in that time, Fallout 5 could hit the shelves around 2034. The Starfield sequel might drop in the late 2030s at the earliest. With that said, where would you like to see Bethesda head down with Starfield IP? Let us know in the comments below. 18. NVIDIA’s New 100-Hour Limit Subscription Plan Makes it a Deadlier Threat to Gaming Industry Than Sony’s Predatory Tactics NVIDIA’s New 100-Hour Limit Subscription Plan Makes it a Deadlier Threat to Gaming Industry Than Sony’s Predatory Tactics In the world of cloud gaming, Nvidia GeForce Now has become a household name. Despite the congestion of popular cloud gaming platforms like Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation Plus Premium, and Amazon Luna, GeForce Now has made a special place in everyone’s hearts for its easy accessibility and huge gaming library. GeForce Now was publicly launched in 2020. | Credit: Nvidia. However, a huge decision has been taken by this ********* GPU manufacturing company. While there are improvements in GeForce Now and the middle plan that most gamers will use, NVIDIA’s decision to restrict playing time has sparked a great deal of controversy. Nvidia Caps Its New Monthly Pan into a 100-Hour Time ******* Restriction Players will be able to play for only 100 hours per month in the new plan. | Credit: Nvidia. With no price increase, NVIDIA has rebranded its GeForce Now Priority subscription to the Performance plan, which now supports ultra-wide displays and up to 1440p resolution. However, beginning in 2025, both Performance and Ultimate plans will be subject to a new streaming cap of 100 hours per month. To reflect that it now supports up to 1440p resolution, Team Green renamed the Priority subscription—which is the entry-level option between the free tier and the premium Ultimate subscription—the Performance plan. These members used to stream in 1080p, but now they can also stream in ultra-wide. Additionally, users of the new Performance membership will be able to store in-game graphics settings in the cloud, which will apply those settings permanently and eliminate the need to constantly adjust them. Well, everything is fine and there isn’t a price increase either, but now we get to the restrictions on the number of playing sessions. If you want to play more games, you will need to pay more (or keep playing, but on the ‘Free’ plan) because NVIDIA is imposing a monthly streaming time limit of 100 hours. Nvidia’s New Decision Is a Graver Threat Than Sony Is this decision threatening the gaming industry? | Credit: Nvidia. Right now Sony has taken a weird approach to cashing out every game possible in its library by bringing remastered/director’s cut versions with modest tweaks. This is pretty bad news for the gaming fraternity. However, this decision to cap playing time by Nvidia is worse. So, that really hurts the Ultimate plan. The good news is that similar to mobile data allowances in certain situations, up to 15 hours of unused time will carry over to the next month. You will thus receive 115 hours of streaming for the following month if you play for 85 hours in a single month. The implementation of the time limit appears to be linked to the switch to 1440p on the main plan for GeForce Now, which will undoubtedly result in a significant increase in bandwidth usage when streaming for gamers. Gamers’ general response has been, let’s say, negative, and they have disputed Team Green’s assertion that 100 hours is a generous allotment for the majority. On the surface, that sounds fine, but if you accumulate some significant sessions on the weekends, it’s likely to go more quickly than you anticipate. That works out to three hours a day, or slightly more. 20. Republicans on brink of clinching US House control Republicans on brink of clinching US House control By Jason Lange WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republicans on Saturday appeared close to clinching control of the U.S. House of Representatives, a critical element for President-elect Donald Trump to advance his agenda when he returns to the White House in January. With votes still being counted from the Nov. 5 general election, Republicans had won 212 seats in the 435-member House, according to projections by Edison Research, which projected on Friday night that *********** Jeff Hurd had enough votes to keep *********** control of Colorado’s 3rd congressional district. Republicans now need to win six more seats to keep control of the House and they already have enough victories to wrest control of the U.S. Senate from Democrats, though Edison Research projected late on Friday that Democratic U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen won reelection in Nevada. With Trump’s victory in the presidential election and *********** control of the Senate already decided, keeping hold of the House would give Republicans sweeping powers to potentially ram through a broad agenda of tax and spending cuts, energy deregulation and border security controls. Results of 19 House races remain unclear, mostly in competitive districts in Western states where the pace of vote counting is typically slower than in the rest of the country. Ten of the seats are currently held by Republicans and nine by Democrats. Fourteen of seats were widely seen as competitive ahead of the election.
