University braces for another record enrollment year
University braces for another record enrollment year
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University President Mung Chiang told the university’s faculty senate that this fall could be another record enrollment year.
Chiang told Purdue’s University Senate on Monday that based on applications high school students have filed so far this year, this would be a “record year by a long stretch.”
For reference, the university received 78,526 applications for the Fall 2024 semester. Of that, 39,096 were admitted and 11,388 chose Purdue — the largest freshman class up to that point.
Chiang said in the fall that he understands that Purdue’s student housing found itself in a “crunch time” this summer after announcing it overadmitted for the 2024-25 freshman class, causing the university to propose alternative housing assignments to students at a discounted rate in an effort to manage the additional 1,600 students.
Although the university tried to reduce the number of admitted students to its current freshman class, then Chiang pointed to the acceptance deadline being pushed back to May 15 in light of the struggles with FAFSA applications.
Typically, May 1 is the acceptance deadline for new students, but the two-week window of abnormality caused the surge in new admits for the school year.
“We are going to further and significantly reduce the admissions rate for the incoming undergraduate class, not because as a land grant institution we somehow want to enhance the selectivity for the wrong reasons, but simply because this city of West Lafayette and this campus are not built for the kind of enrollment that we have today,” Chiang said in August.
Although the president did not address Monday whether the university will admit fewer freshmen, its answer looks to be in the form of increased deferrals, he said. Deferrals are different than being waitlisted, and it’s probably not what many potential students wanted to see when admission offers went out Jan. 15.
“A defer decision simply means that we need additional time to assess the space in your desired program before making a final decision,” the university’s undergraduate admission website reads. “Students are encouraged to provide new grades and test scores (if tests were taken but scores were not sent to Purdue).”
This follows Purdue’s plans to more precisely determine future class sizes, something that’s been a strain for students, West Lafayette and Lafayette residents dealing with housing and parking pains, among others.
No senators asked Chiang about admissions.

Listen to The Eerie ‘Sounds’ From A ****** Hole, Captured by NASA
Listen to The Eerie ‘Sounds’ From A ****** Hole, Captured by NASA
These eerie wails are a real sound wave from a supermassive ****** hole
NASA created a haunting audio clip of sound waves rippling out of a supermassive ****** hole, located 250 million light-years away.
The ****** hole is at the center of the Perseus cluster of galaxies, and the acoustic waves coming from it have been transposed up 57 and 58 octaves so they’re audible to human hearing.
The result (below), released by NASA in 2022, is a sort of unearthly (obviously) howling that, if we’re honest, sounds not only spooky, but a little bit angry.
It was the first time these sound waves had been extracted and made audible.
So what’s going on here? We might not be able to hear sound in space, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t any.
In 2003, astronomers detected something truly astonishing: acoustic waves propagating through the copious amounts of gas surrounding the supermassive ****** hole at the centre of the Perseus galaxy cluster, which is now renowned for its eerie wails.
We wouldn’t be able to hear them at their current pitch. The waves include the lowest note in the Universe ever detected by humans – well below the limits of human hearing.
But this recent sonification has not only brought the recording up a whole lot of octaves, they’ve also added to the notes detected from the ****** hole, so we can get a sense of what they would sound like, ringing through intergalactic space.
The lowest note, the one identified back in 2003, is a B-flat, just over 57 octaves below middle C; at that pitch, its frequency is 10 million years. The lowest note detectable by humans has a frequency of one-twentieth of a second.
The sound waves were extracted radially, or outwards from the supermassive ****** hole at the center of the Perseus cluster, and played in an anti-clockwise direction from the center, so that we can hear the sounds in all directions from the supermassive ****** hole at pitches 144 quadrillion and 288 quadrillion times higher than their original frequency.
The result is an eerie one, like many of the waves recorded from space and transposed into audio frequencies.
The sounds aren’t just a scientific curiosity, though. The tenuous gas and plasma that drifts between the galaxies in galaxy clusters – known as the intracluster medium – is denser and much, much hotter than the intergalactic medium outside galaxy clusters.
Sound waves propagating through the intracluster medium is one mechanism whereby the intracluster medium can be heated, as they transport energy through the plasma.
Because temperatures help regulate star formation, sound waves might therefore play a vital role in the evolution of galaxy clusters over long periods of time.
That heat is what allows us to detect the sound waves, too. Because the intracluster medium is so hot, it glows brightly in X-rays. The Chandra X-ray Observatory allowed not only for the detection of the sound waves initially, but for the sonification project.
Another famous supermassive ****** hole also got the sonification treatment. M87*, the first ****** hole ever to be directly imaged in a colossal effort by the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration, was also imaged by other instruments at the same time.
Those include Chandra for X-rays, Hubble for visible light, and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array for radio wavelengths.
Those images showed a colossal jet of material being launched from the space immediately outside the supermassive ****** hole, at speeds that appear faster than that of light in a vacuum (it’s an illusion, but a cool one). And now, they too have been sonified.
To be clear, these data were not sound waves to start with, like the Perseus audio, but light in different frequencies. The radio data, at the lowest frequencies, have the lowest pitch in the sonification. Optical data hold the middle range, and X-rays are at the top.
Turning visual data like these into sound can be a cool new way to experience cosmic phenomena, and the method has scientific value, too.
Sometimes, transforming a dataset can reveal hidden details, allowing for more detailed discoveries about the mysterious and vast Universe around us.

Alleged bikie boss ‘distressed’ by coke kingpin claims
Alleged bikie boss ‘distressed’ by coke kingpin claims
An alleged bikie leader has sued one of Australia’s largest media companies, claiming reports he was a fugitive secretly controlling the nation’s billion-dollar drug trade caused him distress and embarrassment.
News Corp is facing a lawsuit in the Federal Court over an eight-month “campaign” alleged to have caused serious reputational harm to its target, Angelo Pandeli, who outlets identified as the *********** head of the Hells Angels.
The reports were defamatory, his claim said, because Mr Pandeli was falsely painted as a fugitive who seized control of Australia’s ******** drug trade in 2023 and ran drug labs and warehouses in the notorious Golden Triangle region in Southeast Asia.
The lawsuit seeks damages over 17 articles, four videos and the ******** Inc podcast.
“Pandeli has been gravely injured in his personal reputation and has suffered and will continue to suffer substantial hurt, distress and embarrassment,” the court documents said.
The case is being headed by high-profile defamation barrister Sue Chrysanthou SC, who has represented former Liberal MP Moira Deeming, journalist Lisa Wilkinson and actor Geoffrey Rush.
Reports that Mr Pandeli was the country’s “number-one ******** kingpin” who moved tons of ******** drugs after banding together with the billionaire Kinahan Irish crime cartel were false, his lawsuit said.
These articles were published in The Daily Telegraph, Herald Sun and Advertiser between January and September 2024.
The “ongoing repeated, unjustified and co-ordinated campaign” used sensationalist language, gratuitously named Mr Pandeli’s wife, included a pixelated photo of his children and made no reasonable attempt to get his version of events, court documents said.
Mr Pandeli was born in South Australia but moved to Sydney, where he lived from 2004 to 2017, according to court documents.
After that, he lived with his family in Dubai until being deported to Sydney in September 2024.
He is not facing any criminal charges.
Mr Pandeli’s solicitor Paul McGirr and News Corp, which is yet to file a defence to the claim, declined to comment on the case.

Syrian refugees in Jordan camp say they have nothing to go home to
Syrian refugees in Jordan camp say they have nothing to go home to
They have lived for years in Zaatari, the world’s biggest refugee camp for Syrians, but many are unsure they want to return home from Jordan even after the ouster of former president Bashar al-Assad.
They fear the security situation might once again deteriorate after 13 years of civil war, and some say their homes have been destroyed while others lost their jobs and feel they have nothing to go back to.
In 2012, a year into the war in Syria, neighbouring Jordan opened Zaatari camp to host people fleeing the conflict.
It is now home to 75,000 people, according to UN figures.
To begin with, it was a squalid collection of tents dotting an arid landscape, but over time, it grew into a town of prefabricated homes, supplied with free electricity, water, health and schools.
On a street named the Champs-Elysees, after the famed Parisian avenue, 60-year-old shop owner Yousef Hariri told AFP he wanted to stay in Zaatari with his family, where they feel safe.
“I can’t go back. That would mean losing everything and selling the shop would be hard,” said Hariri, whose store sells construction materials.
“The situation in Syria is not good at the moment and it is not clear what will happen. Prices are through the roof and there are armed rebels. Our houses are destroyed.”
The war in Syria, which began with Assad’s crackdown on democracy protests in 2011, forced millions of people to flee the country, with most of them seeking refuge in neighbouring countries.
Tens of thousands have returned since an Islamist-led coalition ousted Assad on December 8, but most refugees have yet to make the journey home.
– ‘Injustice and tyranny’ –
Most of the refugees in Zaatari came from the south Syrian province of Daraa, near the Jordanian border.
It was, earlier in the conflict, home to 140,000 people.
Refugees in the camp receive cash assistance for food, and they have the right to work outside the camp.
“Where are we going to go back to?” said Khaled al-Zoabi, 72, who has lived in the camp since 2012, and who cited the destruction wrought by the war.
“The refugees’ finances aren’t good enough for anyone to return, and no one knows what will happen in Syria,” he said.
“We fled the injustice and tyranny of Assad’s gangs in Syria, where human life had no value. Here, I feel I am a human being, and I prefer to stay,” said the shop owner.
To date, there is no financial assistance to help people return.
Radwan al-Hariri, a 54-year-old father of three, said his contacts in Syria had all advised him to stay put.
An imam at a mosque, the grandfather of 12 children all born in Zaatari said that in Syria, “no one helps you and there is no work”.
– ‘Destiny’ –
According to the Jordanian authorities, 52,000 Syrians have returned home through the Jaber border crossing between the two countries since Assad’s overthrow.
“Insecurity remains a concern. There is still a lot of instability, armed clashes in some parts of the country and an increasing number of civilian casualties due to remnants of war and unexploded ordnance,” UN High Commissioner for Refugees spokesperson in Jordan Roland Schoenbauer told AFP.
“Every refugee has the right to return to their homeland,” he said. “However, when it is the right time to voluntarily cross into Syria will have to remain their decision.”
The UN says around 680,000 Syrians were registered in Jordan from 2011 onwards, though the kingdom says it welcomed 1.3 million.
Not all Syrians in Zaatari were hesitant to return.
Mariam Masalmeh, 63, said she and her husband have decided to go home, as have their children.
But she said she would be “sad to leave Zaatari, which has become my homeland”, as she showed off her garden of rosebushes and apple trees.
Mohammed Atme, 50, could not wait to go home.
“It is time to go back to my family, I haven’t seen my mother and brothers for 13 years,” he said.
“Here, we were treated with respect and our dignity was preserved. But everyone’s destiny is to go back to their country.”

Davis dominates as Lakers claim fourth straight NBA win
Davis dominates as Lakers claim fourth straight NBA win
*********** Josh Green and his Charlotte Hornets had no answer as Anthony Davis had 42 points and 23 rebounds to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a five-point win in their NBA clash in North Carolina.
The Lakers used a huge first quarter from All-Star centre Davis to build a 23-point lead before beating the Hornets 112-107 on Monday night (Tuesday AEDT) for their fourth straight win.
LeBron James had 22 points and Austin Reaves chipped in 17 for the Lakers (26-18), who never trailed.
Miles Bridges had 26 points for the Hornets (12-31), who lost LaMelo Ball in the second quarter to a left ankle injury after he stepped on Jarred Vanderbilt’s foot as he back-pedalled down the court after draining a three-point jumper off one foot.
Aussie Green contributed 15 points, one rebound and one assist for the home side.
It was supposed to be a celebratory night for the Hornets in a game that was aired on free, local over-the-air TV throughout the Carolinas for the first time since the 2007-08 season, giving them a chance to potentially capture a new audience. But it didn’t go as planned.
Davis scored 21 points in the first quarter on 9-of-12 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds as the Lakers bolted to a 39-19 lead.
In Chicago, *********** Josh Giddey played his part as the Bulls held off the Denver Nuggets 129-121.
Giddey had 12 points, four rebounds and 10 assists as the Bulls (20-27) handed the Nuggets (28-18) their second straight loss.
Nikola Vucevic had 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Chicago, while Zach LaVine scored 21 points and Lonzo Ball had 18 for the Bulls, who had lost seven of eight.
Denver wasted another impressive performance by Nikola Jokic, who had 33 points, 14 assists and 12 rebounds in his sixth triple-double in his past seven games. The three-time MVP has an NBA-best 21 triple-doubles this season.
In Cleveland, Darius Garland scored 22 points and Donovan Mitchell added 21 as the Cavaliers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 110-91 win over the Detroit Pistons.
Cleveland (37-9), who have led the Eastern Conference from the start, ended their mini slump with an 11th straight win over Detroit.
Jarrett Allen had 15 points and Evan Mobley 14 rebounds for Cleveland.
Cade Cunningham scored 22 points and Malik Beasley 19 for Detroit. Jalen Duren had 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Pistons, who have 23 wins after going 14-68 last season.
In New York, Mikal Bridges had 28 points, six assists and five rebounds as the Knicks snapped the Memphis Grizzlies’ six-game winning streak with a resounding 143-106 win.
Karl-Anthony Towns had 24 points and 11 rebounds, and Jalen Brunson had 20 points and six assists for the Knicks, who scored 143 points for the second straight game and won their fourth straight. New York (31-16) won for the 16th time in their past 22 games.
Jaren Jackson Jr scored 21 points for Memphis (also 31-16), and Desmond Bane chipped in 16.
In other results, the Houston Rockets scored a surprise 114-112 win on the road against the Boston Celtics, and the Miami Heat beat the Orlando Magic 125-117 in double overtime.
The Raptors accounted for the New Orleans Pelicans 113-104 in Toronto, the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the visiting Atlanta Hawks 100-92, and the Dallas Mavericks breezed past the NBA-worst Washington Wizards 130-108.

Next God of War Game Is Reportedly Centered Around Egyptian Mythology
Next God of War Game Is Reportedly Centered Around Egyptian Mythology

January 28, 2025
The next God of War game could be making its way to Egypt. According to a report from DanielRPK (paywall), Sony is casting currently casting for Middle Eastern Actors for a new game.
“Sony is casting Middle Eastern actors for an unknown AAA game, which is likely to be the next God of War that explores Egyptian mythology,” the report says.
It’s important to note that this information hasn’t been confirmed or independently verified by Insider Gaming. Until that happens, please take this news with a grain of salt.
PODCAST: Xbox Developers Direct Us: Insider Gaming Weekly Podcast
Moving to Egyptian mythology wouldn’t be surprising should it happen. The God of War saga began in Greek mythology before shifting to Norse for the modern games. Moving to a new pantheon would make sense for next era of the franchise.
As far as Egyptian specifically, it’s been mentioned in the past (h/t The Game Post) that Sony Santa Monica originally considered centering the game around Egyptian mythology for the 2018 revival before settling on Norse.
“I think the first pitch I gave was that we wouldn’t even know what was happening,” creative director Cory Barlog said. “So i t was Kratos walking through the desert—because we were, in my mind, still doing Egypt initially—wind, sand blowing all over the place as he’s kind of crawling through and then kind of stands up over a dune and checks out this really fantastic ancient city.”
What do you think about Egypt and its lore being the focus of the next God of War game? Let us know down below, and join more discussions in the official Insider Gaming forums.

Oil prices hold near two-week low as weak China data adds to demand concerns
(Reuters) – Oil prices hovered near a two-week low on Tuesday after weak economic data from China and warming weather forecasts elsewhere soured the demand outlook.
Brent crude oil futures rose by 12 cents, or 0.2%, to $77.20 per barrel by 0220 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures were up 10 cents, or 0.1%, to $73.27. Brent settled on Monday at its lowest since Jan. 9, while WTI hit its lowest since Jan. 2.
China, the world’s largest importer of crude oil, reported an unexpected contraction in manufacturing activity in January on Monday, adding fresh concerns over global crude demand growth.
“The overnight falls came on the back of weak ******** PMI data yesterday and risk aversion flows following heavy falls in U.S. tech stocks,” said Tony Sycamore, an analyst at IG.
China’s crude oil demand is also expected to be hit by the latest U.S. sanctions on Russian oil trade. FGE analysts see refineries in Shandong losing up to 1 million barrels per day of crude supply in the near-term amid a ban imposed by the Shandong Port Group on U.S.-sanctioned tankers.
“Alternative crude barrels (to Russian supply) are being sought after at the same time, but they come at much higher costs,” the analysts noted.
Several independent refineries in China have halted operations, or plan to do so, for indefinite maintenance periods, sources told Reuters, as new ******** tariff and tax policies plunge plants deeper into losses.
India, the world’s third-largest crude importer, also faces disruptions to Russian oil supply, but refiners there are taking advantage of a wind down ******* in the sanctions to make purchases till March, FGE analysts said.
In the U.S., weather forecasts show warmer-than-normal temperatures through this week, which is weighing on demand for heating fuels after extreme cold sparked a natural gas and diesel rally in prior sessions.
“Temperatures in both regions (U.S. and Europe) are increasing, allowing for heating fuel demand to slide off some,” StoneX oil analyst Alex Hodes said on Monday.
Broader financial markets were under pressure from a surge in interest for a low-cost artificial intelligence model launched by ******** firm DeepSeek.
Shares of *********** companies tied to AI and data centers fell sharply on Tuesday, joining a global stock rout sparked by DeepSeek on Monday while *********** markets were closed.

Meta AI is now the friend that remembers everything about you
Meta AI is now the friend that remembers everything about you
Meta AI has added a Memory Boost feature.
Meta AI will remember key details you share in one-on-one chats for more personalized responses.
The AI will also use your profiles on Meta platforms to respond based on your location.
Meta AI wants to be more like your good friend who remembers all the important details about you and less like an impersonal AI chatbot. Meta is rolling out updates to its AI assistant across Messenger, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram in the U.S. and Canada to do just that.
Those engaging with Meta AI may find it remembers much more about you between conversations, including some details culled from your profiles on the various connected platforms that can personalize its recommendations.
The new Memory Boost feature is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Meta AI can now remember key details you share in one-on-one chats. Maybe you casually mention that you love hiking or that you’re fluent in Italian. Meta AI will store that tidbit in its digital brain and use it to inform future responses. A friend who remembers how you like your coffee is a good friend. Whether that same is true about an AI pal is debatable. Especially as, in this case, it’s a friend who is also keeping track of your brunch preferences, weekend plans, and which country artists you’ve been streaming.
The system is also context-sensitive, which means Meta AI doesn’t need you to spoon-feed it all the details. If you tell it you’re vegan while asking for breakfast ideas, it’ll note that for the future and stop recommending omelets or fancy frittatas. This memory feature only applies to one-on-one chats, not group conversations; you can also delete its memory whenever you want.
Personal geography
Meta AI won’t just remember your personality quirks. AI is becoming more personalized by tapping the data you share via Meta’s platforms. For instance, if you’re looking for family activities this weekend, Meta AI might suggest a local concert based on your location, your recent browsing habits, and its memory of you mentioning that you have two kids.
Of course, this level of personalization isn’t entirely new. Meta has been perfecting the art of AI-driven recommendations for years. What makes this different is the assistant’s ability to combine information from multiple sources, including your chat history, profile, and viewing habits, to deliver something relevant.
Trying to stand out by offering this much personalization makes sense as Meta tries to break through the clamor around AI assistants like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and others. Meta’s strategy seems to be doing what it can to embed Meta AI within its existing ecosystem of platforms used by millions of people every day. After all, why would you open a separate AI app when you can just ask Meta AI directly on WhatsApp or Facebook?

How a kabaddi club is changing Indian girls’ lives
How a kabaddi club is changing Indian girls’ lives
BBC
Meena (centre) hopes to become a professional kabaddi player
Meena’s eyes dart from left to right and back again, searching for the fleeting moment when she can make her move.
She is playing Kabaddi, an Indian contact sport now played in more than 50 countries across the world.
A Kabaddi game is played between two teams, each with seven players. Individuals take turns to run into the opposition’s half of the pitch to tag opponents and make it back to their own half without being tackled to the ground.
But for 14-year-old Meena, this is about more than winning points. The sport offers an escape from a restricted, rural life and opens up a world of opportunities.
“It feels different when I play,” she says shyly, struggling to find the words. “In that moment, I am not the Meena who is bound to housework, weighed down by pressures and expectations. It’s just me and the opponent… It feels like I am more powerful than other girls who don’t play.”
Meena lives on the outskirts of a small tribal village, Kudoshi, about 230km away from India’s financial capital, Mumbai, where girls’ lives traditionally revolve around household chores, marriage and children.
But 15 years ago, a group of teachers at the village school decided they wanted to give girls more opportunities.
Daji Rajguru founded the club with a group of colleagues to give girls more options in life
“I have a daughter. I want her to achieve things in life, live the best life she can, be something,” says one of them, Daji Rajguru. “Why can’t girls play Kabaddi and make a career out of it?”
So he and his colleagues, who had played Kabaddi when they were younger, thought it would be good to teach local girls how to play. The pooled their savings – 5,000 rupees ($60; £50) – persuaded the school to let them use its grounds, and opened what they believe was the region’s first all-girls Kabaddi club.
At the start, just two girls, who were pupils at the school, joined up. “Parents were not ready to let their girls play Kabaddi as it meant spending a lot of time away from home,” he says. “They also worried about the impact it might have on their daughter’s marriage prospects,” as traditional families would not approve of girls going out and coming home late.
Daji and his colleagues went door to door reassuring parents their daughters would be safe playing Kabaddi at training sessions before and after school. They reassured them they would supervise the girls properly and not let them be distracted by boys.
The girls in the kabaddi team train before and after school each day
At the start, the teachers would pick the girls up from their homes and drop them off, but as numbers grew they were no longer able to do that. Now, there are about 30 girls in the club and they estimate that about 300 have trained with them since they began coaching, including Daji’s own daughter. Some start playing as young as seven years old.
Like the rest of the members of the club, Meena trains for two hours before school and two hours after classes finish. She has to leave home at dawn and doesn’t get back until nightfall.
“I go alone and it’s dark [in the morning]. I used to be afraid that somebody could do something to me. My family was not supportive then, and are still unhappy with my choice to become a sportswoman,” she says.
But she is persevering, inspired by club members who have excelled over the years and joined state teams or local leagues. Siddhi Chalke and Samreen Burandkar were among the first batch of girls who trained at the club for about eight years. Now, at the age of 25, they are professional league players and are financially independent.
At the start, their families thought playing Kabaddi was a phase that would pass, and when the women decided to make a career of it, their parents were not happy. There is still pressure for them to get married but at the same time their families are also proud that the women are doing well.
Kabaddi changed the course of Samreen Burandkar’s life and has helped her become financially independent
“No-one in my family earns as much as I do,” says Samreen. “I now live in a big city and get to make my own choices. Coming from my community, it’s difficult for girls to go after what they want. I am only here because of Kabaddi,” she says.
Siddhi plays on the same team as Samreen – their friendship born out of Kabaddi. They have travelled around India for competitions, winning medals and championships. “I could only do that because of Kabaddi. Otherwise, I would have been married and ended up at my husband’s place washing the dishes,” says Siddhi and they both laugh, seemingly relieved that they have escaped this fate.
Excelling in sports in India can also help players get jobs in the public sector. Indian states allocate jobs for high achievers in sports, guaranteeing an income even after a player’s active sporting years are over.
Many rural girls take up sport with the dream of getting financial independence via these jobs. It can also help them get greater respect and a sense of identity.
“When we started the sports club, no-one gave any importance to these girls. They were always secondary citizens in their homes, in society,” says Vilas Bendre, a young coach at the club.
“But we realised that when rural girls climb ahead in their lives through sports, their lives change significantly. The way they talk, the way they carry themselves, their lifestyle, everything changes.”
Prize money from kabaddi tournaments helps to fund the club
Even if they haven’t become professional sportswomen, many members of the club have seen their confidence grow and have persuaded their families to let them go to university and delay marriage until they are older.
The community has become more accepting too, and when they see girls exercising, people don’t frown at them any more.
The club is funded by the coaches, cash prizes that the team win in competitions and occasional donations. Most of the girls are from poor and underprivileged families and don’t have to pay any subscription fees.
As well as training in term time, the club organises and funds residential sports camps at the school in the summer, provides food such as eggs, bananas and milk, and often pays for treatment for players’ injuries.
Over time, parents’ fears have been assuaged, but critics sometimes question the coaches’ motives. “People say things indirectly like. ‘Why don’t you coach boys?'” says Daji. But he says there are already opportunities for boys, and there is a gap when it comes to girls.
“We are not just their coaches,” adds Vilas. “At times we are their parents, guiding them, disciplining them, helping them make the right choice.”
And Meena knows the potential of this prized opportunity: “I want to be the best raider and become the captain of India’s Kabaddi team,” she says, daring to dream about medals, championships and leaving an ordinary village girl’s life behind.

‘I expect better’: top-ranked Aussie Green resets focus
‘I expect better’: top-ranked Aussie Green resets focus
While she banked a career-best three titles in 2024, top-ranked *********** golfer Hannah Green expects better of herself in the LPGA major championships and is making it a priority this year.
The world No.6 West *********** will start her year this week at the Tournament of Champions at Lake Nona Golf and Country Club in Florida, which pairs winners from the past two seasons on the LPGA Tour with celebrities from music, entertainment and sport.
Next month she will defend her title at the Women’s World Championship in Sentosa, Singapore, which set her on course to become first *********** since Karrie Webb in 2006 to notch three wins in a single LPGA season.
While she said she’s eager to retain that trophy, she wants to do better in the five majors of women’s golf, and more specifically in the first round, to add to another title to her 2019 Women’s PGA Championship win.
The 28-year-old never really nailed the start of any of those tournaments, posting rounds of 77, 71, 76, 73 and 77 – missing the cut altogether at the Chevron Championship and the Women’s Open.
At the Paris Olympics she missed a medal play-off by one shot, left to rue an opening five-over 77 at Le Golf National.
“Even though I did have three wins last year, I didn’t perform very well in the major championships, I think I missed at least two cuts,” Green said from Florida.
“With the ranking that I am in the world, I expect better things of myself.
“The first round that I’ve had in all the majors has always been a high score … I think I would have one of the best Sunday stroke averages, but then my first round was quite high.
“Once I actually got off to a good start in a tournament, I was ending up with a good result, so that’s something that I’ve noticed.”
Green said she wasn’t sure if it her “game plan” or putting too much pressure on herself, but she planned to change her scheduling so she arrived at each of the majors at her best.
She also hoped to have her coach Ritchie Smith, who also mentors Minjee Lee and her brother Min Woo Lee, at the big tournaments to see if he could pinpoint any weaknesses.
“I’m trying to schedule not playing too much prior to those events so that I’m not burnt out, to give myself the best chance of feeling fresh for those weeks as they are a bit more draining than typical.
“Hopefully I can get off to better starts on Thursday and be up contending instead.”
After a long and busy year, Green gave herself three weeks off at home before starting a new-look schedule in 2025.
“It’s an earlier start of the season than I typically have had in the last eight years as a professional,” she said.
“But I felt like my pre-season was a lot easier this year compared to other years just because I have been in some good form and I haven’t had too many things to work on.
“I felt like because I had come off such a good year, this was probably the best time for me to come and actually play this event.”

Google Pixel 9a’s Higher Storage Variants to Reportedly Cost More than Last Year’s Model
Google Pixel 9a’s Higher Storage Variants to Reportedly Cost More than Last Year’s Model
Google Pixel 9a is rumoured to be in development as the most affordable option in the Pixel 9 series. However, it may not be as cheap as last year. A new report suggests that some variants of the phone could be more expensive compared to their Pixel 8a counterparts. This decision by Google is said to affect the pricing strategy of the purported Pixel 9a in Canada and the US. Notably, this development comes after the entire spec-sheet of the phone was leaked in December.
Google Pixel 9a Price Hike
According to an Android Headlines report, the Google Pixel 9a’s price will start at $499 (roughly Rs. 43,000) in the US for the 128GB storage model, which is the same as Pixel 8a’s starting price. However, that may not be the case for the phone’s other variants. The 256GB variant of the Google Pixel 9a is reported to cost $40 (roughly Rs. 3,500) more compared to the launch price of Pixel 8a with the same configuration.
Thus, the phone could now start at $599 (roughly Rs. 52,000), creating a whopping $100 (roughly Rs. 9,000) gap between the two models. The report speculates that Google’s pricing of the Pixel 9a in Canada could be more “flexible”.
This move is expected to bring Google’s pricing strategy for the Pixel 9a at par with its flagship models. The Pixel 9 series, launched at the Made by Google 2024 event in August, costs $100 more for the 256GB storage variants.
Google Pixel 9a Specifications
Previous reports indicate that the purported Google Pixel 9a will sport a 6.3-inch Actua display, with an adaptive refresh rate ranging between 60Hz and 120Hz. It is expected to be powered by a Tensor G4 chip which also powers the flagship models, along with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage.
For optics, Google will reportedly equip the Pixel 9a with a 48-megapixel primary camera, complimented by a 13-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens and a 13-megapixel selfie shooter. It is also rumoured to deliver considerably improved battery life than its predecessor, with a ******* 5,000mAh battery.
