Jenna Howe: Daughter cut from will wins $250,000… now she’ll have a boob job Jenna Howe: Daughter cut from will wins $250,000… now she’ll have a boob job Jenna Howe, 37, was disinherited by her father Roger Howe three years before he passed away leaving $2.7m after he branded her a “lazy, useless, lying druggie”. Instead his mother, sister and two nephews inherited his fortune when he died in 2020 aged 55 after falling from a second-floor window. His only child took her case to court and a judge has now ruled she should receive $250,000 to help her turn her life around, including paying for replacement breast implants. Camera IconRoger Howe plunged to his death from a second-floor window aged 55 in March 2020. Credit: Facebook/Supplied Judge Mark Raeside said: “Throughout her life, she has been self-conscious about her body and I am quite satisfied this should be paid for by the estate.” Ms Howe’s claim for around $895,000 was rejected but the sum awarded will cover $149 a week for “maintenance” for the next ten years plus help to clear her debts. The judge said her finances were “precarious” and the beautician should get a lump sum “in light of her mental condition” which has made it almost impossible for her to work. He had been urged by Ms Howe’s barrister to award cash for the cosmetic surgery, saying a traumatic childhood left her with “body dysmorphia”. Central London County Court heard that Mr Howe had a “toxic” relationship with his daughter and had consistently “belittled” her. Mr Howe was a technical genius who, at just 16, was making rigs for London pirate radio stations before building up a business selling equipment all over the world. Smithfield Foods prices IPO below range in US market comeback Smithfield Foods prices IPO below range in US market comeback (Reuters) – Smithfield Foods, the largest pork processor in the U.S., said it priced its initial public offering well below its forecast range, raising $521.7 million for the company and the selling stockholder. The IPO valued the pork producer at $7.95 billion, ahead of a market debut that will see the company return to a U.S. exchange after more than a decade. The offering was priced at $20 per share, Smithfield said, below the $23-$27 per share range that would have raised as much as $939.6 million. Smithfield raised $260.9 million in the offering, while the rest was raised by the selling stockholder, a unit of its parent company WH Group. Part of the proceeds from the IPO will go to Hong Kong-based WH Group, which is expected to remain a majority shareholder. Coming close on the heels of Venture Global’s mega IPO that failed to meet lofty expectations last week, Smithfield’s debut could set the tone for other candidates mulling a listing in the coming months. It may also offer some insight into how investors are factoring in risks from tariffs proposed by President Donald Trump. The company employs around 2,500 people in Mexico, and has identified tariffs as a risk factor in its IPO prospectus. However, its long history and profitability may boost its appeal as investors have leaned towards backing tried-and-tested companies over riskier startups over the past two years. Its shares will start trading on the Nasdaq under the symbol “SFD” on Tuesday. Founded in 1936, Smithfield began as a pork processing operation named The Smithfield Packing Company. Its portfolio of brands include Eckrich and Nathan’s Famous. The company was listed in New York from 1999 until 2013, when WH Group acquired it for $4.7 billion, in what was the biggest ******** takeover of a U.S. firm at the time. Morgan Stanley, BofA Securities and Goldman Sachs are the lead underwriters for the offering. PlayStation Will Eventually Abandon Console Exclusives & Follow Xbox’s Strategy PlayStation Will Eventually Abandon Console Exclusives & Follow Xbox’s Strategy Lightning7713h ago I remember awhile ago I can’t remember if it was an article or what but they said this gen will be less about platform wars and more about IP wars. Having your IP on everything and software on other platforms. The race to see who’s software will come out on top. As for Sony, maybe I don’t see Yotei, Intergalactic, Wolverine etc going over any time soon. I can see their LS games doing it. In fact, prediction time I think Fair Games will be on PS5 (of course) PC and Series X|S. I think the few LS games they have now, they want to reach as many platforms they can. SP stuff as I said no. Dont I think it’ll happen ever? That’s the thing in this industry, never say never. Six Nations: Can Simon Easterby’s Ireland author an unprecedented three-peat? Six Nations: Can Simon Easterby’s Ireland author an unprecedented three-peat? Speaking of the Lions, no fewer than eight of Ireland’s playing squad, plus coaches Easterby and Paul O’Connell, know the feeling of pulling on the famous red jersey. However, with the tourists’ last trip coming after a season when Ireland finished third in the Six Nations and were still finding their feet under Andy Farrell, there are a host of key players who come into this championship targeting a first call-up to the invitational side having missed out on South Africa four years ago. Josh van der Flier, for example, may be a former World Rugby player of the year, but at 31 years old has never represented the Lions. The three-Test series against the Wallabies will likely represent a final chance to do so in his prime. While slightly younger, Garry Ringrose, 30, Hugo Keenan and James Ryan, both 28, will be in the same boat. Kiwi-born Jamison Gibson-Park and native *********** wing Mack Hansen will be in the mix having become key Test players since the last tour, while Caelan Doris has been tipped as not just a potential first-time tourist but as a Lions captain too. There will be plenty of talk of taking things game by game and focusing on the task at hand in the coming weeks, but as Doris himself noted, Lions selection will be an “extra factor” to each round of the championship. Six food combinations to boost your gut health Six food combinations to boost your gut health Most of us are increasingly aware of the importance of gut health, with its link to every aspect of our overall wellbeing – from our immune systems to our moods. We know that to enhance the quality of friendly bacteria in our microbiome, the community of microorganisms within our intestines, we should be eating kefir for breakfast, ordering kimchi with our sushi and drinking kombucha with our evening meal. Fewer of us realise, however, that the key to optimal gut health lies not just in the food we consume, but the way we combine those foods. “Pairing certain foods with one another can have a big impact on the benefit our gut gets from them,” explains Laura Southern, a nutritionist and the founder of London Food Therapy. “It can increase the absorption of nutrients and antioxidants from ingredients, as well as helping good bacteria survive the digestive process.” Even tiny tweaks to our meals can make a real difference, so here are our top pairing suggestions to maximise the gut-protective potential of our meals. Add honey to your Greek yogurt honey and greek yogurt Live yogurt is an excellent source of probiotics, its bacteria and yeasts capable of restoring the balance of the microbiome. But to reach the large intestine alive, these micro-organisms must survive the hazardous journey through the mouth, stomach and small intestines, where digestive enzymes break them down. American researchers recently found that adding honey to yogurt had a significant protective effect on B. animalis, the microbe contained in the yogurt, during digestion. Of the four types of honey they tested – clover, buckwheat, orange blossom and alfalfa – clover honey had the biggest impact. “The honey has prebiotic properties, so it feeds and supports the probiotic in the yogurt as it’s digested,” explains Southern. Honey has been used to treat digestive ailments for millennia, as well as to reduce infection and inflammation. A growing body of evidence suggests its prebiotic potential could make it a gut super-food. Eat ****** pepper with turmeric tumeric and ****** pepper Turmeric, the yellow-hued spice often found in Indian cuisine, has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and even anti-******* properties, according to research. It is also believed to strengthen the intestinal barrier, help balance the microbiome and aid digestion. These properties are down to curcumin, its active ingredient. Eating the spice in a curry or dhal, or even sprinkled on top of soup, is an excellent way to boost gut health – but combining it with ****** pepper makes its impact far more powerful. Piperine, a compound in ****** pepper, can increase the absorption of curcumin by up to 2,000 per cent. Southern says that a quick twist of ****** pepper is a simple but valuable addition to many meals. “It has been shown to boost our ability to absorb vitamins and minerals, so it’s worth adding it to vegetables,” she says. If you don’t like the taste of either or both, supplements are available which contain the two spices. Drizzle olive oil on salads salad and olive oil We all realise that to improve our gut health, we need to eat more greens, which contain the fibre and nutrients needed to feed ‘good’ gut bacteria and limit the growth of harmful bacteria. Eating a plate of salad with no dressing may sound like an abstemious choice for people trying to lose weight, but adding a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil makes it far better for us. “A drizzle of good **** added to salad or cooked vegetables is a really easy way to support the gut, and ensure we get all the nutritional benefits from what we’re eating,” says Southern. Olive oil’s antioxidant properties and ability to lower levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol and raise levels of ‘good’ are well-known, but studies have also found that the polyphenols it contains can be directly absorbed by the intestine. These have been shown to increase beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacteria in the gut. When eaten together, the oil aids the absorption of nutrients, including vitamins A, D, E and K, all of which help balance the microbiome. Vitamins A and D also help maintain the integrity of the intestinal barrier, which protects the body from harmful toxins. Add bok choy to miso soup bok choy and miso Miso paste, made from fermented soybeans and grains, is packed with millions of beneficial probiotic bacteria, making it an easy way to nurture the gut when made into soup, added to glazes or blended in salad dressings. One Japanese study suggested people who consume miso soup more often had lower levels of gastrointestinal issues, including reflux and indigestion. Southern suggests adding prebiotics to maximise its gut-friendly impact. “Adding a vegetable such as bok choy, or a sprinkling of seaweed flakes, will feed the good bacteria in the miso paste as you digest it,” she says. “By giving the probiotics fuel to support them as they go down, you’re improving the chances of them reaching the gut intact and having the nurturing impact you want.” Research has shown that miso contains highly active enzymes that aid in the absorption of other vital nutrients, suggesting it will also help ensure the gut benefits as much as possible from the added greens. Stir cinnamon into stewed apple cinnamon and apple Stewing apple in a saucepan with a small amount of water and some raisins for ********** has well-known soothing effects for the gut – and stirring cinnamon into them makes them even more gut-friendly. Apples contain polyphenols which enhance the growth of good bacteria and reduce inflammation, the main cause of issues such as IBS and IBD. Their soluble fibre, pectin, also serves as a prebiotic, which provides food for beneficial gut bacteria. Cooking them releases this fibre, making it easier to digest, as well as making the apples less acidic and far gentler on the digestive system. “Adding cinnamon makes the apples taste sweet and delicious, but it also boosts their anti-inflammatory impact, improves the absorption of their nutrients and balances the spike in blood sugar apples can cause,” says Southern. Sprinkle seeds on porridge chia seeds and porridge A warm, comforting bowl of porridge is many Britons’ go-to breakfast on cold winter mornings, and oats are an excellent choice for gut health – as long as you go for the chunkier, less processed version. “The fibre in porridge oats, beta-glucan, can act as a prebiotic, encouraging the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut,” says Southern. “The fibre also aids digestion and bowel function – beta-glucan forms a gel-like consistency in the gut which helps keep things moving – and helps you feel fuller for longer after eating it.” Scattering a tablespoon of flax and chia seeds on top will add vitamins, minerals and *******-protective antioxidants, significantly improve the meal’s nutritional punch, as well as boosting its benefits to the gut. Both types are high in fibre, which is vital for gut health but which most of us under-consume. “When mixed into porridge, chia seeds form a gel, which enhances the porridge’s stimulation of gut movement,” says Southern. “This type of soluble fibre also feeds the gut’s good bacteria.” Chia and whole ground flaxseeds, also known as linseed, are also one of the best plant sources of omega-3 fatty acids. “The good fats in the seeds slow down the digestion of the oats, stabilising blood sugar levels,” she says. “Omega-3s can also increase the good bacteria in the gut and reduce inflammation.” Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator is shutting down late in March Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator is shutting down late in March Atelier Resleriana releases end-of-service announcement within a year The developers couldn’t meet the standards they set All services end on March 28th After a year since the global launch, Koei Tecmo has announced that Atelier Resleriana: Forgotten Alchemy and the Polar Night Liberator is officially shutting down. The announcement confirms that in-game purchases will end on January 27th, with all services ceasing on March 28th. Until then, several events are planned to give you a chance to enjoy what remains of the experience. This decision follows the developers’ acknowledgement that they could no longer sustain the standards they set. While they consistently worked on improvements and events, they ultimately assessed that continuing operations wasn’t viable. Lodestar Gems, used for various activities, can still be spent until the shutdown, but purchasing them is no longer an option. For a lot of you who have played Atelier Resleriana, this announcement may not come as a complete surprise. The gacha market is saturated with countless options vying for attention, making it hard for new releases to stand out. Atelier Resleriana had some promising ideas but struggled with several key issues. Gacha and banner rates were often criticised, leaving many feeling frustrated with progression. The alchemy mechanics, a defining aspect of the Atelier series, didn’t resonate as they should have, failing to capture the creativity that was expected. The gameplay itself was serviceable but not engaging enough to compete with stronger alternatives in the genre. Atelier Resleriana faced an uphill battle from the beginning, and in hindsight, the writing may have been on the wall. While the Twitter and Reddit announcements have been flooded with players asking for an offline version, it’s hard to imagine that coming true. If you’ve enjoyed the turn-based RPG, then be sure to make the most of these last few months before the adventure ends. And if you’ve decided to move on immediately, then here’s a list of the best JRPGs to play on Android right now! AI Hype Fades and Rotation Into Staples, Healthcare Gains Traction AI Hype Fades and Rotation Into Staples, Healthcare Gains Traction The technical aspect of DeepSeek is not new. The reaction to it though, is new. What this could mean is that unlike the internet explosion which included 100’s of companies, the AI explosion is much narrower in impact thus far than what has been hyperbolized by mainstream media. AI has enormously affected only a few companies. So, if the AI movement is indeed narrower than what pretty much everyone was led to believe, yesterday’s sell-off could be only the beginning. The good news is that folks like me, waiting patiently for a rotation into other sectors, could finally be reaping some rewards. Yields relaxed, the dollar declined, and money flowed into healthcare (NYSE:) and consumer staples (NYSE:). Is this the beginning of a recession or a more convincing next stage of stagflation? This is a good day to look at our Economic Modern Family. The chart of Sister Semiconductors is sobering. On the Daily chart, the gap down is ginormous. is below the January 6-month calendar range. It is way underperforming and momentum (which was in a bearish diversion even at the highs), is now maybe a bit oversold. The weekly chart is worse. This is the first time SMH has traded below the 50-week moving average since January 2023. As a weekly chart though, we do have time to see how it closes on Friday. A close back above could be a great low-risk opportunity. As for the rest of the Family: Granny still needs to clear $81. However, yesterday’s action considering was not too bad. Gramps () as an index got hit a bit. $227 is our pivotal point. yesterday’s action though was more indecisive than negative. looks like it’s trying. Through $140 would be a great sign. is yesterday’s star. If goods are moving, the economy is not flashing recession. Regional Banks also did ok. Through the calendar range, we can see upside there. And once again, we must end with a look at -the Agriculture ETF. DBA cleared the January calendar range last week. That is bullish. It filled the gap from December 19th. That is bullish. A move over 28.00 will blow the doors off inflation and in the worst possible way-food prices. The bottom line, this rotation yesterday is fine. SMH must find some footing. And certain commodities are flashing their own warning. With Great Britain trials not until April and the World Championships in Shanghai in September there is plenty of time to worry about which boat she ends up in, subject to selection. “To be someone from Northern Ireland and a woman from Northern Ireland, if I could come back with two medals at some point in my future, gosh, everything has to go right, to even say that, but it would be a really cool feat and it’s something that I think is a new challenge. “To do that and pave the way for a Northern Irish woman, I think would be really special.” One of four Olympians from Northern Ireland to win a gold medal last summer, Scott joins the other three – swimmers Daniel Wiffen and Jack McMillan and gymnast Rhys McClenaghan – in confirming their Olympic journeys are continuing, an exciting prospect for local sports fans. “We’ll see in the future how the four of us go, but for Northern Ireland, it’s great,” added Scott. “I’m so proud to be from here and that’s why another reason why I want to do it again.” Source link #Hannah #Scott #Northern #Ireland #rower #targets #Olympic #gold Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Italy sends 49 more migrants to Albania for processing following earlier court rejections Italy sends 49 more migrants to Albania for processing following earlier court rejections SHENGJIN, Albania (AP) — An Italian navy ship arrived Tuesday in Albania with 49 migrants intercepted in international waters for processing of their asylum applications at special Albanian centers, in the third such attempt following hurdles earlier raised by Italian courts. Italy’s Interior Ministry did not specify the nationality of the migrants brought to the port of Shengjin, 66 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of the capital, Tirana, but Italian media said they were from Bangladesh, Egypt, Ivory Coast and Gambia. The attempt at processing in Albania follows two previous failures in October and November, when Italian judges refused to approve the detention of two small groups at the Albanian centers, built under a contentious agreement between Italy and Albania. The courts ruled that the migrants’ countries of origin weren’t safe enough for them to face the possibility of being sent back by the centers. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. The cases have been referred to the European Court of Justice, which earlier established that asylum applicants could not undergo a fast-track procedure that could lead to repatriation if their home countries are not deemed completely safe. The European court hearing on the case is scheduled for Feb. 25. Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni’s government has vowed to reactivate the two centers in Albania after they remained dormant following the Italian courts’ decisions. Meloni’s position was partially backed by a ruling in late December by Italy’s highest court, which said Italian judges could not substitute for government policy in deciding which countries are safe for repatriation of migrants whose asylum requests are rejected. The decision does allow lower courts to make such determinations on a case-by-case basis, short of setting overall policy. The migrants are to be checked in at a reception center at the port of Shengjin before being taken to the Gjader accommodation center, about 22 kilometers (14 miles) to the east. The November 2023 agreement allows up to 3,000 migrants intercepted by the Italian coast guard in international waters each month to be sheltered in Albania and vetted for possible asylum in Italy or repatriation. Italy has agreed to welcome those migrants who are granted asylum, while those whose applications are rejected face deportation directly from Albania. The agreement to outsource the housing of asylum-seekers to a non-European Union member country has been hailed by some countries which like Italy are experiencing a high level of migrant arrivals, but human rights activists have criticized the deal as setting a dangerous precedent. So far this year, 3,704 migrants have arrived in Italy, more than double the number in the same ******* last year, when 1,305 arrived. Last year, 66,317 migrants arrived in Italy, a drop of 58% from the previous year. Most arrived from Bangladesh, followed by Syria, Tunisia and Egypt, according to the Italian Interior Ministry. ___ Semini reported from Tirana. Colleen Barry in Milan contributed to this report. 8 tax deductions for homeowners to lower their income tax
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
8 tax deductions for homeowners to lower their income tax 8 tax deductions for homeowners to lower their income tax You don’t buy a house for the tax deductions. It’s just a nice side benefit. And usually very much appreciated, considering all the extra expenses associated with homeownership. Here are eight tax breaks for homeowners that you’ll want to know about. Dig deeper: Are closing costs tax deductible? In this article: The best-known tax break is most likely the mortgage interest deduction. It may also be the least understood. There are two keys: “At the roughly 3% interest rates that had been standard for over a decade, few taxpayers had enough mortgage interest to be significantly higher than the standard deduction,” Crystal Stranger, senior tax director and CEO of Optic Tax in Boulder, Colo., said by email. “Now it is becoming much more likely to have an impact on tax returns with interest making up a larger portion of every mortgage payment, especially in the early years after purchasing a home.” You’ll still want to consider whether taking the income tax deduction for mortgage interest — along with other deductions — exceeds the standard deduction. To deduct any specific expenses related to your home, you’ll have to opt for itemized deductions. “If they have a medical event and were in the hospital for three or four months. Or, they’ve given a significant amount of donations — all of those things fall into those itemized categories. Mortgage interest is a component of it,” John G. Adams, a CPA in Jupiter, Fla., told Yahoo Finance over the phone. Learn more: How the mortgage interest tax deduction works and when it makes sense Accessing the equity in a house using a second mortgage unlocks the value you usually get only if you sell the property. Home equity loans and lines of credit can be invaluable tools to convert a portion of an illiquid asset (your home) into cash. And it could provide another tax break. Tax deductibility for HELs and HELOCs requires the proceeds to be used to buy or improve your home, though there are other restrictions too. One important consideration: Interest deductions are allowed on up to $750,000 of home loan debt, including first and second mortgages. If you are married and file your taxes separately, that drops to $375,000. Dig deeper: Discount points reduce your mortgage interest rate — and can be tax deductible. Adams said that by paying a bit of interest upfront, you pay less interest over the remaining years of your mortgage. Roughly, for each 1% discount point, your mortgage rate is lowered by a quarter point. For example, on a $400,000 mortgage, you might pay $4,000 to lower your rate from 7% to 6.75%. Points can be purchased in fractions, as well. “Just keep in mind that points are not financially smart unless you plan to live in your house at least five years before selling it, and most homeowners relocate before that,” Stranger said. More details: When are mortgage points tax deductible? Property taxes — in jurisdictions where they are collected — often fund many of the services and infrastructure where you live. And they can be an income tax deduction, along with other state and local taxes. As with all of these other tax breaks, you’ll have to itemize your tax return and comply with appropriate limits. Tax software or a tax professional can ensure you get the numbers right because the rules often change yearly. Read more: Property tax deductions — How much can you write off? Now, we’re trimming the tax deductions down to a thin slice. Homeowners’ association fees are about as close as you can get to a nuisance fee in the owning-a-home scenario. They are also not generally tax deductible. There are exceptions, but don’t hold your breath. You may be able to write off some or all of your HOA fees if you have an investment property, a house you use as an occasional rental, or a home office. Dig deeper: Are HOA fees tax deductible? Sometimes — here’s when. Many people are keeping their homes longer, so renovations and upgrades are popular. If you make home improvements that add to the property’s value, there’s a good chance those expenditures can be tax deductible. The tax write-off will not be allowed for minor cosmetic touches, maintenance, or repairs but only for meaningful updates that increase your home’s market price. Learn more: Which home improvements are tax deductible? Working from home can have its benefits, he wrote while wearing a worn-out tee, joggers, and sneakers. But a tax break? Yeah, sometimes. “If you use your house for business, it opens the door to significantly more deductions being available, including a portion of repairs, utilities, etc.,” said Stranger. You can calculate the square footage of your workspace or, for the careful recordkeepers, itemize your actual work-related expenses. The catch: To get the tax write-off, you’ll generally need to be self-employed or a contracted freelancer rather than a remote employee. And you’ll need a dedicated workspace. Read more: Who can claim a home office tax deduction, and how much can you save? The profit on the ***** of a house is called a capital gain. You can avoid paying taxes on some or all of that sum under two conditions: The house has been your primary residence. You’ve lived in the home for at least two of the past five years. Currently, the IRS allows a homeowner’s exclusion for the first $250,000 profit on the ***** of a primary residence. That increases to $500,000 for a married couple. For example: A married couple who file their taxes jointly sells their home for $750,000. Assuming they have a $100,000 mortgage balance on the house, and with the capital gains exclusion, they will pay capital gains taxes on $150,000. $750,000 sales price – $100,000 mortgage balance – $500,000 exclusion = $150,000 capital gain The amount you pay in taxes will be based on your annual income. “Most homeowners I’ve seen who resell their house within two years have a small loss or break-even on the *****,” Stranger said. “Capital gains taxes rarely are an issue for homeowners selling their primary residence.” Dig deeper: Capital gains tax on real estate — How much you’ll pay when you sell a home Remember, with all the tax advantages duly considered, you’re buying a house for lifestyle reasons: Your family is growing, you’re moving closer to your job or family, or you simply want a place of your own. You’re not buying a house for the tax benefits. Adams said that would be a “tail wagging the dog” sort of decision. “You should always be thinking strategically — first about your family or your business life, and then taxes should be a part of it, but it really shouldn’t be the deciding factor of why you do stuff.” As noted above, the most likely deductions include the interest you pay on your mortgage loan and, in some instances, the interest on HELOCs and HELs. Property, state, and local real estate taxes might also be written off. Pre-paid interest, called discount points, can be a deduction. And, sometimes, home office expenses and significant improvements to a house can provide a tax break. If you have a home office, you may be able to take a deduction on a portion of work-related expenses. Or you can take a write-off based on an IRS deduction rate multiplied by the square footage of your dedicated workspace. You can also deduct losses from disasters and theft. New homeowners can write off mortgage interest, discount points, property taxes, major home upgrades, and home office expenses. If you have a home office and are not a full-time remote employee, you might be eligible to deduct a portion of the amount you paid for utilities based on the square footage of your workspace up to a maximum limit. Aussie sharemarket trades flat after Wall Street sell off, dollar falls by 0.6 per cent Aussie sharemarket trades flat after Wall Street sell off, dollar falls by 0.6 per cent *********** shares were surprisingly resilient during Tuesday’s trading despite the mass sell-off overnight on Wall Street, caused by the sudden arrival of ******** AI chatbot DeepSeek. The benchmark ASX 200 index fell on Tuesday but only by 9.80 points or 0.12 per cent to finish at 8399.10 points. The broader All Ordinaries fell by 15.90 points or 0.18 per cent to 8644.50. The Aussie dollar fell 0.6 per cent to 62.51 US cents. Camera IconThe Aussie sharemarket was spared the bloodbath on Wall-Street overnight. NewsWire / Max Mason-Hubers Credit: News Corp Australia Concerns over DeepSeek came to a head on Monday overnight, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite losing more than 3 per cent, while the S & P 500 slid about 1.5 per cent. The sell-off follows fears American tech is overspending on AI with the US businesses tipped to spend $US500bn ($AU799bn) in AI infrastructure, while ******** AI chatbot DeepSeek was created for just $US6m ($9.59m). Although the validity of the product and the costs are yet to be proven. Nvidia lost close to $US600bn ($AU959.51bn) in market cap on Monday, the biggest drop for any company on a single day in U.S. history. Capital.com senior financial market analyst Kyle Rodda said the *********** market was insulated from the Wall Street sell-off due to lacking a tech sector. “The ASX200 has been relatively well insulated from the sell-off on Wall Street, largely for the same reason it has underperformed US indices in recent years: a lack of large tech companies and artificial intelligence exposure,” he said. “So we missed out on the way up but we didn’t have the drop today.” Australia’s energy sector was pummelled, especially the uranium shares with Deep Yellow dived 15 per cent to $1.23, Boss Energy fell 10 per cent to $2.84 and Paladin lost 9.4 per cent to close at $8.15. “We saw signs of the DeepSeek influence through the uranium plays and some of the real estate sector, especially in data centres,” Mr Rodda said. “The biggest impact has been on uranium stocks, off the back of fears that the adoption of nuclear energy to power data centres will be delayed and diminished by the impacts of DeepSeek on the AI complex.” Camera IconDespite the overall market holding up uranium shares were pummelled. Picture Newswire/ Gaye Gerard. Credit: News Corp Australia Overall, on a mixed day for the *********** market five sectors were higher and six traded lower. Consumer cyclicals were the major winners along with communications, health care and financials. Wesfarmers hit a new record high, up 1.1 per cent on the day to close at $75.46. Aristocrat Leisure grew 54.21 per cent to $71.85 after Goldman Sachs issued a buy recommendation on the share, while Brevilles is up 1.73 per cent to $38.20 and The Lottery Corp grew 0.41 per cent to $4.94. The major four banks all outperformed the market. Westpac led the way up 1.15 per cent to $33.40, while ANZ grew 1.13 per cent to $30.15 and NAB lifted 1.07 per cent to $39.82. The only major bank not to rise by more than 1 per cent was CBA which finished in the green up 0.40 per cent to $159.28. The Trump-Musk bromance is breaking up and could break America The Trump-Musk bromance is breaking up and could break America It was a marriage made in heaven — until it wasn’t. President Trump and Elon Musk, two titans of ego, united for the cameras and the “greater good.” But like all fairy tales, this one didn’t last. The honeymoon is now officially over. Barely had Trump announced his artificial intelligence infrastructure project, Stargate, when Musk, his so-called “First Buddy,” slipped into the role of disgruntled spouse. The White House rollout, featuring SoftBank, OpenAI and Oracle, promised a half-trillion-dollar leap into AI supremacy. “They don’t actually have the money,” Musk sniped on X, his personal soapbox. “SoftBank has well under $10B secured. I have that on good authority.” Musk’s rapid turn from ally to adversary sends a clear signal: Trump needs to cut ties — before the bromance drags him, and possibly the nation, under. What might have initially seemed like a strategic alignment — a billionaire tech mogul and a bombastic political leader coming together to shape America’s future — was, in reality, a ticking time bomb. Musk and Trump are not Batman and Robin. They are two Batmans, each with their own unyielding desire to dominate the spotlight, the narrative and the accolades. The combustible mix of their egos, coupled with their insatiable need for public adoration, is destined to end in a fiery implosion. Musk’s recent public mockery of Trump’s AI initiative is not just a minor jab — it’s a declaration of independence. For Trump, who demands absolute loyalty and reverence, this is tantamount to betrayal. But Musk has never been one to play second fiddle, and Trump has never been one to share the stage. Their alliance was never rooted in mutual respect. Rather, it was a transaction of convenience, driven by mutual utility. Musk had the money, the influence, and the tech-world clout to help amplify Trump’s reelection campaign, casting himself as a visionary willing to bet on a populist wildcard. Trump, in turn, held the ultimate prize: the keys to the kingdom. For Musk, those keys unlocked an unprecedented opportunity for federal largesse — contracts worth billions, aimed squarely at propelling his enterprises to new heights. SpaceX could solidify its dominance in the race for the stars with long-term NASA and Department of Defense funding. Tesla could secure its place as the backbone of the nation’s energy infrastructure, with federal dollars subsidizing sprawling projects tied to renewable energy grids. The newly announced AI infrastructure project, Stargate, represented yet another goldmine, with Musk poised to position himself as the architect of America’s technological future. For Trump, Musk’s support was a strategic coup. Musk’s backing brought an air of Silicon Valley sophistication to Trump’s administration, creating a rare bridge between populism and the tech elite. It was lust, not love — a high-stakes quid pro quo driven by ambition, not allegiance. Moreover, and this is a critical point, Trump’s brand of traditionalism stands in direct opposition to Musk’s vision of a tech-driven future. Musk fancies himself a modern-day Prometheus, delivering the fire of innovation to humanity: electric vehicles to revolutionize transportation, plans to colonize Mars as a backup for civilization and AI advancements to reshape industries. His worldview is one of relentless progress, a future unshackled from the constraints of the past. Trump, by contrast, embodies a different archetype of power. His appeal is rooted in populism, nostalgia, and a promise to restore America to a bygone era of strength and simplicity — a time when industry roared, borders were fortified and traditional values defined the nation’s character. Trump wants to make Detroit great again. Musk wants to turn it into a launchpad for Mars. These conflicting ideologies were always destined to clash. Musk’s techno-utopianism leaves little room for Trump’s vision of a grounded, tradition-oriented resurgence. This will not end well. When billionaires feud, the repercussions rarely stay confined to their personal disputes. Both Musk and Trump command vast influence, shaping entire industries, political ideologies and cultural movements. A public falling out between these two powerhouses risks exacerbating existing societal divides, potentially stalling progress in crucial areas of innovation and policy. We’ve already had a preview of this clash during the H-1B visa controversy, where Musk’s call for expanded tech talent collided head-on with MAGA’s staunch protectionism. Now, I ask you to imagine this tension writ large. Musk’s legion of tech-savvy futurists, who hail him as a modern-day Tony Stark, pitted against Trump’s loyal traditionalists, who view him as the guardian of American values. Such a schism would not only deepen ideological fractures but also risk turning cultural and policy debates into entrenched battlegrounds, paralyzing collaboration. The two men represent two competing forces shaping the 21st century. When personal quests outweigh collaboration, the price is paid by everyone. Trump would be wise to cut ties with Musk now — before it’s too late. John Mac Ghlionn is a writer and researcher who explores culture, society and the impact of technology on daily life. Assassin’s Creed Shadows Makes a Huge Blunder by Adding Watermelon in the Game, Fans Claim Assassin’s Creed Shadows Makes a Huge Blunder by Adding Watermelon in the Game, Fans Claim Ubisoft can’t seem to make anyone happy lately as Assassin’s Creed Shadows gets even more backlash online. There are a couple of new reasons this time and the biggest one right now is because of a screenshot of the game that was recently posted online. The screenshot shows Yasuke on a “leisurely stroll” in what seems like a marketplace in town, but there are some glaring problems according to fans. Did the studio do any research at all? | Image Credit: Ubisoft In Yasuke’s “leisurely stroll,” we see watermelons in the scene while cherry blossom trees are blooming in the background. This shouldn’t be possible if you consider how seasons work in Japan. Once again we must question Ubisoft’s commitment to historical authenticity because this just seems like cultural insensitivity. Assassin’s Creed Shadows can’t stop making mistakes And we’re all here to call them out. | Image Credit: Ubisoft Twitter/X account @_L3vi3/ASSASSIN’S CREED NEWS posted a picture of Yasuke, the protagonist of AC Shadows, alongside watermelons and cherry blossoms. This is historically and agriculturally impossible because watermelons were introduced to Japan during the Edo *******, long after the game’s timeline. On top of this is the fact that cherry blossoms bloom in spring, while watermelons are summer fruits. FYI, watermelons >are never seen in the same season as cherry blossoms (summer vs spring) >didn’t reach Japan until the Edo *******, long after the Sengoku ******* But Ubisoft HAD to include watermelons for the legendary forgotten ****** samurai HAHAHAHAHAHA remarkable [Hidden Content] — Kangmin Lee | 이강민 (@kangminjlee) January 27, 2025 弥助が鎌倉時代の金色の鎧を着ている設定です。 [Hidden Content] — Dr. Alaric Naudé (@Goryodynasty) January 27, 2025 A lot of critics and Japanese people online are calling out Ubisoft for reducing their culture to a series of marketable tropes. Dr. Alaric Naudé who is a professor and a linguist, criticized the game for misrepresenting Yasuke’s story and attire. According to Naudé, Yasuke is depicted wearing golden armor akin to that of the Kamakura *******, which would have been inaccessible to a newly arrived foreigner. And then there’s the fact that Ubisoft has been accused of censoring Japanese critics. Japanese content creator Shohei Kondo recently alleged that his videos criticizing AC Shadows were repeatedly removed from YouTube under claims of “hate speech.” It really does seem like the studio is just ignoring cultural authenticity and reducing Japan’s rich history to marketable visuals. Ubisoft in general is on a downward trajectory The competition is coming and the studio isn’t ready. | Image Credit: Ubisoft The backlash and controversies with this game are the latest in a series of controversies that Ubisoft has gotten itself into. In 2024, the company faced a lot of criticism for releasing underwhelming titles like Skull and Bones, Star Wars Outlaws, and XDefiant. Expectations aside I’m sure you’ll agree they all had problems like dated graphics, repetitive gameplay, and technical issues. Coming back to AC Shadows though, it seems the Japanese version of the game is going to be censored to comply with local ratings. Scenes that show dismemberment and certain violent dialogues will be altered to match the rating standards. We’ll have to wait and see if this change impacts the game’s reception in Japan. The stakes are huge though for AC Shadows. The studio needs this game to succeed because there is a lot of competition coming up. Even on the Japan side of things, we’re going to get more news and a possible launch of Ghost of Yotei in 2025, and given how successful Ghost of Tsushima was, it could easily blow Ubisoft’s title out of the water. Assassin’s Creed Shadows comes out on March 20, 2025, and the clock is ticking. Will you be picking up the game once it comes out? Let us know in the comments!
