Fremantle Dockers star recruit Shai Bolton injures calf at training, in doubt for All Stars game
Fremantle star recruit Shai Bolton has suffered a calf injury at training this week and is in doubt for the highly-anticipated All Stars game.
The 26-year-old was sent for scans on Friday afternoon with the club hopeful the injury is minor, 7NEWS’ Ryan Daniels reports.
Bolton was one of the marquee players announced for the All Stars clash with the Dockers at Optus Stadium on February 15.
Fremantle then face Melbourne at Rushton Park in an official pre-season game on March 2.
Dockers vice-captain Caleb Serong this week said he was in awe of Bolton in his first pre-season in purple.
“His talent and what he does with the footy in hand is unbelievable,” Serong said.
“His competitiveness is something that has shone out to me and how much when the game’s on the line in our match sim — even if it’s a 10-minute match sim — how much he wants to win and how much he wants to be involved.
“He’s been great since he’s come in the door, he’s worked his backside off and I can’t wait to see him in the purple colours round one.”
More to come.

5 Things to Know About Apple’s Performance in India From CEO Tim Cook’s Q4 Results Call
Apple reported its fiscal earnings for Q4 2024 on Thursday, and the iPhone maker missed forecasts on revenue and earnings per share (EPS). The latest earnings call showed that Apple’s revenue in the previous quarter was up 4 percent year over year to reach $124.3 billion (roughly Rs. 10,76,51,950 lakh), while its EPS rose 12 percent year over year to $1.64 (roughly Rs. 140). The company set a new record for services revenue, which rose to $25 billion (roughly Rs. 21,66,25,000 lakh) in the previous quarter.
During the company’s earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company plans to roll out Apple Intelligence features to eligible devices in more regions, as the iPhone maker doubles down on artificial intelligence (AI) features. He also highlighted the company’s performance in emerging markets, stating that the company saw ‘double-digit’ growth in countries like Brazil, Mexico, and India.
Here are five things to know about Apple in India from CEO Tim Cook’s Q4 results call:
Apple Intelligence in India: Eligible devices in India will be able to access Apple Intelligence with the default localised language — English (India) — starting in April. Apple will also roll out its AI features in other languages, including French, *******, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified ********.
More Apple Stores in India: Apple reiterated its plans to open four new stores in the country as it continues to expand its retail presence, but didn’t reveal where these outlets will be opened. The company currently has two Apple Stores in India — Apple BKC in Mumbai and Apple Saket in Delhi.
Record iPhone Growth: Boosted by festive season sales, the iPhone Active Install Base in India has soared to new highs, according to the company. Citing a survey from Kantar, Apple says that the iPhone was the top-selling smartphone in India, in Q4 2024, and a recent Canalys report revealed the company had the highest smartphone shipments in the previous quarter with a 23 percent market share.
Enterprise Adoption: Tim Cook also revealed that Zomato has deployed ‘thousands’ of Macs in Q4 2024. Apple launched new MacBook Pro and iMac models in the previous quarter, and these computers are equipped with the company’s latest M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max chips.
Potential for Growth in India: Apple still has a very modest market share in India, compared to rival smartphone and computer makers. However, the company’s CEO said that there was substantial potential for growth in the country, which is currently the second-largest and third-largest market in the world for smartphones and PCs, respectively.

Auric basks in $10m cash pile from WA Jeffreys Find gold sales
Auric basks in $10m cash pile from WA Jeffreys Find gold sales
Auric Mining is basking in a $10 million cash pile after selling 14,853 ounces of gold in the 12 months to December from the second stage of mining at its Jeffreys Find gold mine at Norseman in Western Australia. Total revenue from gold sales for the ******* reached a remarkable $58.7m at an average price of $3952 per ounce gold.
The final tally for 2024 brings total sales of gold since the start of mining in 2023 to almost 25,000 ounces.
With an additional 60,000 tonnes of ore – holding nearly 3,000 ounces of gold – still stockpiled on the run-of-mine pad at Jeffreys Find, the total gold haul is set to climb even higher.
The final count is expected to jump to more than 30,000 ounces of gold when processing capacity opens at a nearby mill. In addition, gold remains in the circuit at Three Mile Mill at Coolgardie and some gold retained by the mill is yet to be sold.
This would far exceed initial estimates and mark a remarkable outcome for a mine that for many years was regarded as an ugly duckling.
With mining only just completed a week ago at Jeffreys Find, Auric says a significant portion of surplus cash from its operations is still held with its joint venture partner BML Ventures until final reconciliations, additional gold sales and mining costs are accounted for.
Auric expects further cash distributions during the current quarter as the mine winds up after three successful mining campaigns.
The December quarter has created substantial value and opportunities for Auric Mining, reflecting strong operational progress and strategic advancements across our portfolio.
With an eye to the future, Auric is now setting its sights on the next gold mining project at Munda, 5 kilometres west of Widgiemooltha in WA.
Having recently completed an updated resource estimate and prefeasibility study at site, the company is pushing forward with plans in March to mine out a starter pit holding 7400 ounces of gold grading 1.8 grams per tonne (g/t) in reserves, pending permit approvals.
Key regulatory applications, including a mining proposal and mine closure plan, have been submitted to the mines department with approvals expected shortly.
Although the starter pit holds a relatively modest amount of gold, reconciling the recovered ounces will provide a critical insight into the accuracy of the overall resource model of the ******* 145,000-ounce orebody, prior to ramping up a full-scale mining and toll treatment operation at site in 2026.
Further grade control drilling on a tight 5 metre by 5m grid is also underway to help improve understanding of the overall deposit.
At the company’s early-stage Spargoville gold project, 35km southwest of Kambalda in WA, a 17-hole reverse circulation program has continued to jag good hits at the Fugitive and Anomaly 37 prospects, including 3m at 10.36g/t gold as part of a 7m intercept running at 4.88g/t gold and 2m grading 10.69g/t gold.
When the data is crunched, Auric expects to lay out plans for a further drill program during the year to chase up on the mineralised trends and target areas with the highest chance for hitting paydirt.
During the quarter Auric also made a conditional move to buy the Burbanks gold processing plant, 9km south of Coolgardie, for a remarkably cheap price of $4.4m. The 180,000-tonnes per annum (tpa)facility is strategically positioned near the company’s existing resources and could offer a cost-effective, in-house processing solution.
However, a lot of work needs to be done before that thought becomes reality.
To maximise its potential, Auric is running the numbers to see what capital investment is needed to expand the plant’s capacity to 500,000tpa. A big part of the appeal of the deal is that the plant comes with existing mining licences and is already hooked up to the main power grid with all the required regulatory permits in place to fast-track any expansion.
To gain an exclusive due diligence ******* until mid-February, the company has tinned up a non-refundable $100,000 deposit allowing it to do a thorough assessment of the plant’s technical, operational, licensing and legal framework. If everything checks out settlement is expected by March 15.
As an important footnote to what appears to have been a massively busy quarter for the company, Auric closed a significant deal with the Ngadju Native Title Aboriginal Corporation to secure a blanket native title agreement across the company’s total tenure. The deal covers the Marlinyu Ghoorlie people to the north and Ngadju to the south.
This pre-emptive agreement is unique in its construction, giving Auric ongoing access to its entire grounds and could provide a template for similar style deals with other miners going forward.
Auric has kicked off 2025 in rare financial form with $3.6m in the bank and about $6.5m sitting in escrow ahead of final distribution from Jeffreys Find.
With cash flows from gold production starting to take off along with several promising projects on the horizon and a booming gold price – currently trading at all-time highs of US$2800 (A$4500) per ounce – the company appears to have mastered the art of making hay while the sun shines.
2025 looks as if it could be a game-changing year for the junior miner.

RFK Jr. confirms he wants to take away people’s health care
RFK Jr. confirms he wants to take away people’s health care
It sure seemed like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had a cold on Wednesday. During his Senate hearing as Donald Trump’s nominee to head the Department of Health and Human Services, Kennedy snuffled, cleared his throat, coughed, blew his nose and, most painfully for those forced to listen, wheezed heavily into a perplexingly unmuted microphone while others spoke. I’m not his doctor, of course, and cannot diagnose him. I’m just saying that even the most stalwart believer that COVID-19 is a hoax might nonetheless be reluctant to sit next to their fellow conspiracist. For a man who claims it’s time for a “break” in medical research into infectious disease, it was likely an irritating irony to present such a compelling reminder of the validity of germ theory.
(No, I’m not referring to Kennedy’s vocal disorder, which causes his voice to shake. It doesn’t cause the phlegm-fest he struggled to contain on Wednesday.)
Despite his apparent malady, Kennedy stuck to his shtick of reframing health as a matter of private virtue rather than public concern. Over the course of the hearing, it became clear why this lifelong Democrat has switched to the GOP. His view that sick people did it to themselves and deserve what’s coming to them offers a nifty justification for Republicans‘ long-standing desire to deny health care to millions of Americans. Kennedy may dress this up as “prevention” or concern for children, but the message came through loud and clear: Medical patients are parasites who ***** up resources from better, more responsible people.
Kennedy noted in his opening statement that the U.S. spends “far more on health care” than other developed nations, but declined to note the obvious reason: No other nations is so deeply committed to a for-profit insurance system. He dismissed that objection with a red herring: “Shifting the burden around between government, corporations and families is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic,” he said, evading reams of proof that different entities have different scales of cost-effectiveness in health care delivery.

Instead, Kennedy blamed “chronic disease,” a vague category that encompasses a cornucopia of ailments like “autoimmune diseases, neurodevelopmental disorders, asthma, Alzheimer’s, ADHD, depression, addiction” and, with special emphasis, diabetes. I’ll leave it to the experts and fact-checkers to explain how badly he misrepresented the diverse causes of these conditions. What matters here is the rhetorical purpose “chronic disease” plays: Blaming the victims, and creating the pretext for taking their health care away.
Kennedy has spent decades as an anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist, and his training as a B.S. artist was on full display at Wednesday’s hearing. He waxes poetic about the importance of “prevention.” to the point where even those of us who know he’s full of it can get sucked in, at least until we remember that he rejects the single most important form of preventive care ever developed. (Vaccines, duh.) But as the hearing went on, it became clear that “prevention” was just an RFK code word for victim-blaming.
When asked how he would implement “prevention” for Medicare and Medicaid patients, Kennedy replied that it was about “making them accountable for their own health care, so they understand the relationship between eating and getting sick.” He argued that people on food assistance should have their options reduced so they can’t buy processed foods. That’s designed to sound vaguely positive while doing nothing to help people. No living person believes that Oreos are better for you than apples. Lecturing them about it and restricting their food budget will do nothing to reduce their medical costs, but it does creates an excuse to deny health care by claiming that they made themselves sick.
When Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., asked whether health care is a right, Kennedy got closer to showing his true colors by refusing to answer the question.
Under prolonged badgering, Kennedy all but admitted he thinks care should be denied if your past behavior wasn’t “healthy” enough. “Free speech doesn’t cost anybody anything, but in health care, if you smoke cigarettes for 20 years and you get ******* you are now taking from the pool. Are you guaranteed the same right?” Kennedy snapped at Sanders.
On its surface, that may sound fair. Most people don’t have much sympathy for smokers these days. But this must be seen in the larger context of Kennedy’s constant refrain: Most illnesses are a result of what people eat, so almost any health problem can be blamed on “personal choices,” especially when you’re as divorced from scientific facts as Kennedy is.
There’s an entire “wellness” industry, which Kennedy is deeply plugged into, that sells the idea that “clean” food and healthy living will prevents every kind of ailment. We saw this in operation during the pandemic, when influencers like Joe Rogan peddled the idea that diet and exercise were superior “prevention” to the vaccine. In other cases, it’s more complicated: There’s no question that diabetes has both diet and genetic factors. But it’s not a huge leap to move from false or dubious claims about personal health practices to blaming sick people for not taking your advice.
Kennedy’s eagerness to slash access to health care burbled up repeatedly during the hearing, most comically when he offered computer software as an alternative to doctors. When asked about provider shortages in rural areas, he raved about an article he read describing “an AI nurse that you cannot distinguish from a human being, that has diagnosed as good as any doctor.” I don’t know what’s scarier: replacing doctors with chatbots, or the fact that Kennedy wants upend the medical system based on a half-remembered article.
Want a daily wrap-up of all the news and commentary Salon has to offer? Subscribe to our morning newsletter, ****** Course.
On a more serious note, Kennedy repeatedly nodded at the long-standing Republican dream of slashing Medicare and Medicaid. He hyped Medicare Advantage, a privatization scheme set up to cannibalize Medicare, even though studies repeatedly show it raises patient costs without improving care. There was an especially telling exchange with Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., who sneered at people who consider Medicaid “sacrosanct” and declared that the program, which covers nearly one in five Americans, “is not producing positive outcomes.”
That is a lie, since 83% of people on Medicaid rate the program positively, which is slightly higher than ratings for remployer-provided insurance. But Kennedy couldn’t agree quickly enough, declaring, “We’re spending $900 billion. People are getting sicker every year.” No doubt Republicans were pleased, since they are proposing massive cuts to Medicaid to fund yet another tax cut for the wealthiest Americans.
Kennedy uses his status as a former Democrat as a shield to seem “reasonable” despite his decades of conspiracy theory-mongering, but what he dished out on Wednesday was the same glib right-wing nonsense we’ve heard forever. Kennedy implied that health care spending is doing nothing to help people, and may even make their situation worse. In reality, lower-income people have worse health outcomes in no small part because they have sporadic or incomplete access to medical care, and Medicaid — which is mainly an insurance program, not a provision program — can do little to address that. Taking away whatever access people now have will not compel them to bootstrap their way to better health. Kennedy and his new Republican bosses know this, which is why they’ve got their excuses lined up when health outcomes get even worse: Sick people are to blame.

Jacksonville businessman and millionaire indicted, accused of evading nearly $2M in taxes
Jacksonville businessman Phillip Mak was indicted by a federal grand jury Wednesday, facing charges of evading nearly $2 million in taxes.
According to the Florida Department of State, Mak is President of Fairway Action Inc.
The Department of Justice says Mak earned around $10.3 million from 2008 to 2020, and is accused of not paying any federal taxes and only filing tax returns for two of those years.

The indictment says he also worked as a sales representative and an independent contractor for businesses during that time.
The IRS allegedly assessed about $1.92M in outstanding taxes, penalities and interest against Mak. Prosecutors claim that, instead of paying what he owed, Mak tried to shield his assets from the IRS by transferring $1M in cash to his domestic partner’s bank accounts.

A woman tried for killing 3 escaped a Mexico prison in 1969. More than 50 years later, she has died
A woman tried for killing 3 escaped a Mexico prison in 1969. More than 50 years later, she has died
An American woman who was tried in three killings before disappearing from a prison in Mexico more than 50 years ago has died in Canada, where she was living under an alias, authorities announced Thursday.
Sharon Kinne was charged before her 25th birthday with killing her Missouri husband, her boyfriend’s wife and a man she’d picked up at a bar in Mexico. Since she reportedly escaped a women’s prison on Dec. 7, 1969, her whereabouts had been a mystery, featured in podcasts, TV shows and even a book, “I’m Just an Ordinary Girl: The Sharon Kinne Story.”
But finally, through an anonymous tip, authorities were able to confirm that she died of natural causes on Jan. 21, 2022, in Alberta, Canada, where she had been going by the name of Diedra Glabus, said Sgt. Dustin Love at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office in Kansas City, Missouri, during a news conference. All pending charges against her were dropped this week.

“I would love nothing more (than) to one day sit across the table from her, and I would like to pick her brain,” Love said. “So, yeah, it’s unfortunate we couldn’t catch her when she was alive. She was really good at what she did.”
Her family said in a statement, which was read aloud during the news conference, that the discovery brought closure.
“Sharon was a woman that never faced the consequences of her actions, leaving them for her children to deal with,” the statement said. “She caused great harm without thought or remorse.”
Kinne, who married at 16, was living in a ranch home in the Independence, Missouri, area in March 1960 when her 25-year-old husband, James Kinne, was shot in the back of the head while napping. Independence is just outside of Kansas City.
The mother of two told police she had heard her 2-year-old daughter ask, “How does this thing work, daddy?” Then there was a gunshot. Sharon Kinne said she ran into the bedroom and found the toddler holding her husband’s .22-caliber semiautomatic pistol. The death was ruled accidental.
But Kinne and her husband had been having marital problems, and she was seeing other men, later court testimony revealed.
According to press reports and interviews with investigators, Sharon Kinne then met car salesman Walter Jones when she went to buy a new car with money from her husband’s life insurance and the ***** of their home. She tried to get him to break off the marriage. “Of course he said no,” Love said.
Sharon Kinne then duped Jones’ wife, Patricia, into meeting with her in May 1960, after which she disappeared, Love said. A massive search ensued for the woman. Love said Kinne was with another boyfriend when she acted surprised to find the woman’s body, which had been shot four times, saying, “I think that’s her.”
She told the boyfriend not to tell police she was there but he did anyway, Love said.
On June 1, 1960, Sharon Kinne was charged with Patricia Jones’ *******. Police took another look at James Kinne’s death and a Jackson County grand jury indicted Kinne for that crime as well.
In June 1961, Sharon Kinne was tried in the death of Patricia Jones. And an all-male jury acquitted her to courtroom applause.
In January 1962, Sharon Kinne was convicted of killing her husband. But, the Missouri Supreme Court later overturned the conviction because of improper jury selection. She was tried again, but jurors couldn’t agree on a verdict. She was released on bond, something Love said wouldn’t happen today.
“Our justice system has come a long ways in 65 years,” he said.
Sharon Kinne then fled to Mexico with a new boyfriend in September 1964, Love said. That same month, she picked up a man in a bar and went with him to a hotel. Around 3 a.m., gunshots were heard and Francisco Ordonez lay dead on the floor. Kinne got 13 years for killing Ordonez.
Ballistics tests proved prosecutors’ hunch that a gun found in Sharon Kinne’s ******** motel was the one that killed Patricia Jones.
Before her apparent escape, she gave several interviews, and was known in Mexico as “La Pistolera,” which translates as “The Gunslinger.” In a 1965 Saturday Evening Post interview, Kinne said: “I knew out there, out of Kansas City and Independence, that the world was going on its way someplace. And I wasn’t going anywhere.″
The trail went cold until law enforcement got a tip in December 2023.
Ultimately, the identification was possible because fingerprints from the ******** home that handled Kinne’s remains were compared to prints taken of Kinne at the time of the killings.
The investigation showed that she married multiple times over the years, including in 1970 to a man named James Glabus in Los Angeles. She started families under several other names.
“Not only are the victims’ families affected by this, but so are her families,” Capt. Ronda Montgomery of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said.
The families all want to remain anonymous and asked for privacy, authorities said.
It isn’t entirely clear what happened in the 1970s, but she had been living in Alberta, Canada, since at least 1979, Love said. He said they are still seeking tips about her life, especially her whereabouts from 1969 to 1979.
“I have already extended my apologies to both sides of the family that we weren’t able to catch her during her life,” he said. “It just so happens that someone had that tip and was not willing to release it until after her death.”

Radical format twist to test Ironman’s title hold
Radical format twist to test Ironman’s title hold
Defending champion Ali Day laughs that the radical shake-up of the Iron Series finals feels like an attempt to knock him off the perch.
But the surf lifesaving veteran is backing himself to win anyway this weekend on the Gold Coast.
The two-day, eight-race knockout will boil down to a winner-takes-all, eight-person swim, board and ski race for the men’s and women’s crowns.
Five-time Iron Series champion Day has been a dominant force since claiming his first title a decade ago.
But the 10-time Coolangatta Gold winner, 34, has no room for error against a chasing pack headed by New Zealand’s Joe Collins, who won both races in Newcastle’s last round.
Only 16 male and female competitors remain from the 30 that lined up in round two, with four more dropping out after Saturday’s fifth event, that will feature a handicapped start based on results in the first four races.
Sunday’s three-race program will whittle the field down from 12, to 10 and then to eight before the first across the line at North Burleigh wins it all.
“I hope not, but it does sound like that though,” Day laughed at the tongue-in-cheek suggestion the format had been tweaked to threaten his dominance.
“It’s a different format, but it’s exciting and you can’t change it so I’m just going to be challenged by it and I’m looking forward to it.
“At the end of the day it’s eight guys in that final and you’ve still got to go and win it … deliver in the biggest moments.
“In my career I’ve been able to do that.
“There’s a lot of racing to get through Saturday just to make it to Sunday’s final.
“I’m still a big believer if you do the little things right you’ll be rewarded.”
Collins, 22 and now based on the Gold Coast, would be the first New Zealander to win the title.
Defending women’s champion Lana Rogers is aiming to join Kristy Cameron as the only four-time series winners since females began racing in 1990.

******* Holocaust survivor to return national award after AfD vote
A 99-year-old ******* Holocaust survivor said on Thursday he wants to return his Order of Merit – Germany’s highest honour – after a controversial motion demanding reforms to migration policy passed in parliament due to far-right votes.
Albrecht Weinberg, who survived the Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps, said the award had been a great honour but he was outraged by the vote.
“It has become too heavy to bear when you have news like this. Terrible,” Weinberg told dpa.
The centre-right CDU/CSU bloc relied on support from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) to push through the non-binding measure on Wednesday, the first time that the party has been involved in a majority vote in the Bundestag, Germany’s lower house of parliament.
Weinberg lost most of his family to the Nazis and survived several death marches.
Along with his sister, Weinberg moved back to Germany from the United States in 2012 and has since regularly spoken with ******* schoolchildren about his experiences.
“I’ve been going to schools for the last 10 years and talking to pupils about what could and would happen if they were to take power again,” said Weinberg, referring to the far right. “They have no idea what it was like in 1945 Germany.”
The Mannheim photographer Luigi Toscano, a friend of Weinberg who has devoted his work to commemorating victims of the Nazis, said he also wants to return his Medal of Merit.
The pair plan to give the awards back to ******* President Frank-Walter Steinmeier as soon as possible.

******** state-linked social media accounts amplified narratives celebrating the launch of ******** startup DeepSeek’s AI models last week, days before the news tanked U.S. tech stocks, according to online analysis firm Graphika.
The accounts involved in the effort, including those of ******** diplomats, embassies and state media, amplified media coverage of the launch and promoted the idea that DeepSeek challenged U.S. dominance in the AI sector, New York-based Graphika said in a report it provided to Reuters on Thursday.
The messaging was rolled out on platforms such as Elon Musk’s X and Meta Platforms’ Facebook and Instagram, as well as ******** services Toutiao and Weibo, Graphika said.
“This activity shows how China is able to quickly mobilize a range of actors that seed and amplify online narratives casting Beijing as surpassing the U.S. in critical areas of geopolitical competition, including the race to develop and deploy the most advanced AI technologies,” Graphika Chief Intelligence Officer Jack Stubbs told Reuters.
“We’ve consistently seen overt and covert ******** state-linked actors among the first movers in leveraging AI to scale their operations in the information environment.”
Graphika said it also found a video featuring pro-China, anti-Western content on a YouTube channel whose activity resembled that of Shadow Play, a coordinated influence campaign involving at least 30 YouTube channels that was first identified by the *********** Strategic Policy Institute in 2023.
YouTube owner Alphabet, Meta, X and the ******** embassy in Washington, D.C. did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the report.
Graphika said it found a small spike in discussion about DeepSeek’s advancements in relation to OpenAI’s ChatGPT on X immediately after DeepSeek released its models on Jan. 20, followed by a much larger uptick that started on Friday and continued to build over the weekend.
By Monday, DeepSeek’s free AI assistant had overtaken U.S. rival ChatGPT in downloads from Apple’s app store and global investors dumped U.S. tech stocks, wiping $593 billion off chipmaker Nvidia’s market value in a record one-day loss for any company on Wall Street.
Nvidia declined to comment on the Graphika report.
DeepSeek’s researchers claim to have developed aspects of their AI model at a far lower cost than U.S. rivals, sparking worries that U.S. companies that have plowed tens of billions of dollars into AI data centers could face a price war with China.
Shares of Microsoft, a major investor in OpenAI that operates data centers on behalf of the ChatGPT creator, slid earlier this week when it disclosed slower cloud revenue growth than Wall Street expected while it continued to plow billions into capital expenditures.
Microsoft and Meta have vowed to continue deep investments in AI for the foreseeable future.
DeepSeek’s rise to prominence was celebrated in China as a sign that the nation was beating back Washington’s attempts to contain China’s tech industry with curbs on technology exports.
In the U.S., DeepSeek’s accomplishments sparked accusations that it had improperly accessed technology from OpenAI and other leaders, though the allegations remain unproved.
The U.S. Commerce Department is looking into whether DeepSeek has been using U.S. chips that are not allowed to be shipped to China, a person familiar with the matter said.

Fatty goes from lipstick, high heels to Origin glory
Fatty goes from lipstick, high heels to Origin glory
Paul Vautin has described as only he can how he went from a Footy Show skit to a 1995 State of Origin clean sweep as coach, via a near death experience for his close mate and captain Trevor Gillmeister.
It was a sight for sore eyes at the XXXX Ale House on Friday when the triumphant 1995 Queensland side gathered for a 30-year reunion where tall tales but true permeated the atmosphere, in harmony with the liquid gold pouring from the famous taps.
The 3-0 series win, by a team known as the ‘Neville Nobodies’ against a star-studded NSW outfit, remains the benchmark for what more than a few good men can do when they are the right men.
The lessons from that famous victory still apply to Billy Slater’s current Maroons squad, who will wear a jersey decorated with elements of the 1995 strip as they attempt to regain the Origin shield.
In 1995 it all started with a phone call by then Queensland Rugby League boss Ross Livermore to novice coach Vautin in an hour of need when the Footy Show host was unzipping his dress.
“I was in the car park at Channel Nine and wiping off some lipstick and getting out of some high heels because we had had just shot a (skit) when my phone rings,” Vautin grinned.”It was Ross Livermore and he goes straight to business. He said ‘Wayne Bennett has stood down from coaching the Queensland side and we’re in desperate need of a coach and we want you to coach Queensland’. I said ‘Ross, how many have knocked it back?’
“He said, ‘you are the first bloke we rang. I said, ‘I’ll do it. Beautiful.’ Queensland coach. Could it get any better?”
Vautin met his squad at the team hotel, including current QRL boss Ben Ikin who was a teenager of unknown pedigree to the coach. They got out of the lift together on the fifth floor.
“I said, ‘stop right there. This floor is for Origin players only. If you want an autograph wait in the foyer and we will be down in half an hour’,” Vautin recalled.
“He goes, ‘I am Ben Ikin. I am in your team you ******’. I go ‘You are Ben Ikin. Let’s go and win a series 3-0 champ’.”
They did, after the 22-game Maroons hero forward told his team that they were up against “Blue jerseys” that they just had to run harder at and tackle harder than.
Gillmeister almost missed the decider in Brisbane. He was in hospital on a drip on match eve after his leg got infected. The doctor told Vautin that Gillmeister could contract septicemia and die if he played.
“I spoke to Trev for about 15 minutes and he couldn’t decide what to do,” Vautin recalled.
“I said, ‘if I was you and had a chance to lead Queensland to a 3-0 win and get picked for Australia for the first time I would get up out of that bed and play’.
“He said, ‘you should have said that 15 minutes ago. I am in’. I said the doctor said you could get septicemia and die. He said, ‘****, what a place to do it’.”
“I hope that at some stage during the year the players that (Slater) picks get to mingle with these guys because … what they did was incredible,” Vautin added
“We won that series on defence.
“If Billy gets his defence right he has so much talent in that team that they can do whatever they want. Origin is about courage, determination and will.”

Buc-ee’s announces groundbreaking for new location in Benton
BENTON, Ark. – Representatives for Texas convenience store chain Buc-ee’s have announced they will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for their new Benton location next month.
The groundbreaking will happen Feb. 19 at the northwest corner of Interstate 30 and Highway 229.
‘Buc-ee’s is coming to Arkansas’ Benton officially set to get Buc-ee’s
News of Buc-ee’s coming to Saline County was first reported in July of 2023 when a proposed land purchase on a 29-acre track from the city at a cost of $77,586.21 an acre for an anticipated travel center began fueling the speculation.
In a video played before kickoff at the 2024 Salt Bowl at War Memorial Stadium, Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed that a Buc-ee’s will be coming to Benton.
“Buc-ee’s is coming to Arkansas and Saline County, right in the heart of our state, will be its home,” Sanders said.
Signs point to Buc-ee’s Travel Center coming to Arkansas
Though no information has been given on when it will be open, officials said the Benton location is set to tie for their largest location ever built with a 75,000 square feet store, over 100 pumps and 225 jobs.

‘Could help develop new strategies’
‘Could help develop new strategies’
A groundbreaking discovery about how plants defend themselves against environmental threats could transform the way we grow food, per Phys.org.
Researchers have identified a previously unknown role of peroxisomal proteins in boosting plant immunity. This surprising new finding could lead to innovative agricultural practices that enhance crop resilience while reducing pollution.
Agriculture is at the heart of feeding a growing global population, but it’s also a major contributor to pollution and climate change. Crops face ever-increasing challenges from pests, diseases, and environmental stressors like drought.
Traditionally, chemical pesticides have been used to mitigate these threats, but they too come with environmental costs. The discovery of a natural mechanism for enhancing plant defenses could significantly reduce the need for these harmful inputs.
The research, published in Plant and Cell Physiology, was conducted by a team from Shinshu University in Japan. They identified the protein HSR201 as essential for salicylic acid production, combining with specialized organelles known as peroxisomes via a distinctive targeting signal.
Peroxisomes were already known to play a role in managing oxidative stress. However, this study reveals they are also critical in bolstering a plant’s immune response.
Watch now: This ‘win-win-win’ app offers up to 50% savings on food
By understanding how these proteins work, scientists could use this natural defense system to create crops that are more resistant to environmental pressures.
This breakthrough is a major step forward in sustainable agriculture. If these findings are applied to crop development, farmers could grow more robust plants that require fewer chemical inputs, cutting down on the pollution caused by traditional farming methods.
Dr. Shinpei Katou, leader of the research team, notes, “We aim to improve our understanding of this process, which could help develop new strategies to potentially enhance crop resilience and sustainability.”
In addition to the environmental benefits, more resilient crops mean more stable food supplies, particularly in regions vulnerable to climate change. This research could ultimately lead to improved food security by helping develop disease-resistant crops.
With further research and development, crops utilizing this discovery could be available to farmers within the next decade. In the meantime, organizations like The Cool Down and others focused on sustainable farming practices continue to push for greener solutions to agricultural challenges.

Alfa Romeo is replacing its last sedan with something different
Alfa Romeo is replacing its last sedan with something different
The Alfa Romeo Giulia will live on, but it’ll have a very different look in its next generation.
That’s according to Alfa Romeo and Maserati’s recently appointed CEO, Santo Ficili, who told French publication L’Argus the new Giulia – due in 2026 – will have “a new design and a new type of bodywork”.
This is understood to involve a more crossover-type look.
The next Alfa Romeo Giulia could resemble, in concept at least, the Peugeot 408, DS No. 8 and Citroen C5 X also produced by Stellantis – think a fastback design with a slightly higher ride height than a traditional sedan.
Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now.

It isn’t expected to move to an entirely SUV-like silhouette, however, as it’ll be preceded late in 2025 by a new-generation Stelvio.
The Alfa Romeo range will expand upwards with a new flagship SUV in 2027, but Mr Ficili ruled out plans to resurrect what previously served as the brand’s entry-level model: the Giulietta hatchback, which ended production in 2020.
That will leave the Alfa Romeo brand with only a quintet of crossovers – or at least crossover-style models – unless it ends up introducing another sports car, as executives have previously expressed a desire to do.
The next Stelvio and Giulia will be underpinned by Stellantis’ STLA Large platform, which underpins the new Dodge Charger, Jeep Wagoneer S and the upcoming Jeep Recon.
Camera IconDS No. 8 Credit: CarExpert
“We have changed things [compared to the American STLA Large] but the origin is the same. And Stelvio will be the first Stellantis model in Europe to use it,” Mr Ficili told L’Argus.
The use of STLA Large should also see the Giulia grow in size, with Stellantis having previously confirmed vehicles on this platform will measure between 4764 and 5126mm long, and 1897 and 2030mm wide, with wheelbases ranging from 2870 to 3075mm.
The outgoing Giulia measures 4643mm long, 1860mm wide and 1436mm tall, and rides on a 2820mm wheelbase.
The new Stelvio will launch with electric power, but Mr Ficili said: “We are also working on hybrid versions.”
Stellantis Europe CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato told Auto Express in October 2024 that the Giulia could also be offered with more than just electric power, too.
Camera IconDodge Charger Daytona ***** Pack Credit: CarExpert
STLA Large is a “highly flexible, BEV-native” unibody platform that will also be used by Maserati and Chrysler.
It can support front-, rear- and all-wheel drive configurations with combustion-powered models offering either transversely or longitudinally mounted engines.
Electric versions will offer either 400-volt or 800-volt electrical architectures, with batteries ranging from 85 to 118kWh, claimed 0-100km/h acceleration times as low as the two-second range, and range of upwards of 800km for sedans.
The dual-motor all-wheel drive Dodge Charger Daytona produces 370kW of power and 547Nm of torque as an R/T, and 500kW/849Nm in current flagship ***** Pack guise – the latter shading the outputs of the twin-turbo V6-powered Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, which pumps out 375kW and 600Nm.
A more powerful electric Charger Daytona is expected, but before then Dodge will introduce a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre ‘Hurricane’ inline six-powered version this year, called the Charger Sixpack.
This powertrain would appear to be a logical fit for the next Giulia Q.
