Super Flappy Golf opens pre-registration, with imminent soft-launch in select regions in February
Super Flappy Golf opens pre-registration, with imminent soft-launch in select regions in February
Sign-ups now open on iOS and Android
Get to the hole first
Hatch eggs for special birdies
Noodlecake has officially opened pre-registration sign-ups for Super Flappy Golf, which means you can put your name in to get first dibs on the third instalment of the series ahead of its official launch. What makes this one especially notable is the fact that it’s apparently the first release for the studio that’s developed in-house since Golf Blitz from 2019 – that’s about six years of TLC from the devs to make sure the next release is a goodie.
In Super Flappy Golf, you can look forward to flailing away through a variety of courses to guide your birdie to the hole. The idea is to do so with the least flaps possible, and with the simple two-button controls, it’s really anyone’s game.
Now, if you’re feeling a little bit more competitive, you can always challenge your friends to a race to get to the hole first. Or if you just want to complete your collection, you can always earn eggs and hatch them using different traits – the combinations are seemingly endless, so I suppose the collection will never end too.
Does all that sound absolutely fab to you? While waiting for the official launch, why not take a look at our list of the best multiplayer games on Android to challenge your friends to something else in the meantime?
By mid-Feb, Super Flappy Golf will soft-launch in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the Philippines. You can expect the launch date to be around the end of March or April – at least tentatively, according to the studio.
You can also join the community of followers on the official Facebook page to stay updated on all the latest developments, visit the official website, or take a little peek at the embedded clip above to get a feel of the vibes and visuals.

BBC Repair Shop fixes historic rugby shirt ruined during washing
BBC Repair Shop fixes historic rugby shirt ruined during washing

BBC News
BBC
The Wales rugby shirt worn by Wales international Bryan Richards, held by his son Lloyd and his wife Karen, was damaged when it went through the wash
Karen Richards could not believe it when she put her late father-in-law’s precious international rugby jersey in the washing machine – and it came out damaged.
Bryan Richards, who grew up in Skewen, Neath Port Talbot, was the last Wales player to wear a number six shirt as a fly-half, which made it a piece of sporting history.
After going through the wash the red from the shirt ran into the white collar, and things got worse when Karen tried to bleach it.
She and husband Lloyd Richards, who live in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, tried in vain to find someone to fix it – until as a last resort they decided to call BBC One’s The Repair Shop.
Bryan, closest to the camera, was the last player to wear a number six shirt as a fly-half. It was replaced by the number 10
“My heart sank, it was such a precious family heirloom and I had ruined it,” mum-of-two Karen said.
The devastated 51-year-old said she felt she had done a disservice to Bryan, who died aged 91 in December 2023.
He wore the shirt against France at Cardiff Arms Park on 26 March 1960.
As good as new: Karen and Lloyd were delighted after it was restored
Then they got The Repair Shop involved.
“Within three or four weeks we were down there,” said Lloyd, 56.
Rebecca Bissonnet restored the shirt on the show by examining the red stitching, which would have matched the jersey.
The textile conservator believed the stitching was polyester so unaffected by the bleaching.
After removing the six, the collar and the three feathers she dyed the top its original red.
A piece of grainy footage of Bryan playing was also restored on the programme.
Bryan had told his son he would train by running up and down the slag heaps behind his house.
As well as Wales, he played for Neath, the Barbarians and captained Swansea.
But the pinnacle of his rugby career was playing for his country, mortgage adviser Lloyd said.
Bryan in the shirt before the game against France
The jersey now has pride of place in a clear acrylic box in Lloyd’s home office.
Karen said Bryan would have been “a bit bemused by it all”.
“He didn’t really tell anyone about his experiences,” she said.
The couple were delighted to have the jersey looking as good as new.
“Never for one minute did I think it was going to look as good as it does,” Karen said.
The Repair Shop is on on BBC One at 20:00 GMT on Wednesdays and on BBC iPlayer

Wanderers prevail to continue Roar misery in ALM
Wanderers prevail to continue Roar misery in ALM
Western Sydney have kept their A-League Men finals hopes alive with a crucial 1-0 away win over Brisbane Roar.
Friday night’s win at Suncorp Stadium through a goal to Bozhidar Kraev took the Wanderers to 21 points and just one point outside the top six.
Brisbane lost their ninth home game in a row to sit last on five points in another underwhelming display.
Western Sydney took the lead in the eighth minute after a corner by Juan Mata that an unmarked Kraev headed home.
The 1-0 advantage remained until halftime, with Roar goalkeeper Macklin Freke keeping his side in it with several key saves.
Brisbane were unable to make the most of their opportunities. Captain Jay O’Shea shot wide when he had a clear chance.
Striker Henry Hoare had the best chance when his shot appeared set for goal before a classic block by defender Alex Bonetig.
The home side had the most shots on target, 5-4, but Wanderers goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas was supreme in keeping his side’s second clean sheet of the season as the second half became a stalemate.
Wanderers coach Alen Stajcic said his side fought hard for the win.
“The grind was there,” he said.
“I probably thought we lost a bit of our fluency in attack to be fair. I thought combined with Macarthur and Sydney we were probably the best attacking teams up until the last week.
“We have traded in a bit of that attacking fluency for defensive resilience.”

Google Releases AI-Powered ‘Ask for Me’ Feature That Can Call Businesses for You
Google Releases AI-Powered ‘Ask for Me’ Feature That Can Call Businesses for You
Google released a new experimental artificial intelligence (AI) feature via Search Lab on Thursday. Dubbed Ask for Me, the feature is available within Google Search and allows users to let an AI chatbot call businesses to make enquiries. The feature is currently available to select users in the US in the Android and iOS versions of the Google Search app. To be eligible for the feature in said locations, users will need to sign up to Google’s Search Labs and activate it. Earlier this month, Search Labs released Daily Listen, which can generate audio overviews of a user’s Discover feed.
Google Releases Ask for Me in Search Labs
In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Rose Yao, the Vice President of Product Management at Google, announced the new Search Lab feature. The new AI-powered feature will be available within Google Search and can prompt the AI to call businesses for specific queries.
Once activated, the feature will automatically be turned on within Google Search. Currently, it only supports nail salons and auto repair shops. When a user makes a relevant query on the search engine, users will now see a new Ask for Me card.
The card appears with a call and sparkle icon and comes with a one-line description that says, “Google will call local services to ask about their prices and availability.” On tapping the ‘Get Started’ button, a full-screen interface opens where users can select which service they need. So, if they have queried about auto repair, it will suggest options such as scheduled maintenance, oil change, tire rotation, fuel filter replacement, engine filter replacement, and more.
Once the issue has been specified, the feature seeks information about the vehicle such as manufacturing year, brand, and driven distance. Then users are prompted to select when would they prefer the service and whether they would want updates via SMS or email.
Once the steps are done, the AI uses Gemini’s capabilities to make a natural language call to businesses and enquire about prices and availability. The feature generates a full report on the same and sends the information via SMS or email after 30 minutes.

Haliey ‘Hawk Tuah’ Welch Goes Silent After Meme Coin Crashes—What’s She Hiding?
Haliey ‘Hawk Tuah’ Welch Goes Silent After Meme Coin Crashes—What’s She Hiding?
Internet Sensation Vanishes After Crypto Project Faces Backlash
Haliey Welch, famously known as the “Hawk Tuah Girl,” has not posted a single episode of her podcast, Talk Tuah, since launching her meme coin, $HAWK, eight weeks ago. The abrupt silence from Welch has fueled speculation among fans and investors, especially as legal troubles mount around the cryptocurrency’s rapid rise and fall.
From Viral Fame to Crypto Queen
Welch skyrocketed to internet stardom in mid-2024 after a viral street interview where she responded with the now-infamous phrase “Hawk Tuah.” Her sudden fame led to brand deals, public appearances, and the launch of Talk Tuah, a podcast meant to capitalize on her growing audience.
However, Welch’s most ambitious move came in December 2024, when she entered the volatile world of cryptocurrency with the launch of $HAWK, a meme coin marketed as a community-driven digital asset. The token quickly gained traction, reaching a staggering $500 million market capitalization at its peak.
$HAWK Crashes, Investors Cry Foul
Despite its initial success, $HAWK’s value plummeted within weeks, wiping out millions in investments. Accusations of a “pump-and-dump” scheme surfaced, with investors alleging that early backers—potentially including Welch’s team—artificially inflated the coin’s value before selling off large holdings.
Welch has denied any wrongdoing, blaming external market forces for the coin’s decline. However, her prolonged silence and lack of transparency have only added fuel to the fire.
Lawsuit Targets $HAWK Developers—But Not Welch
In the wake of the collapse, disgruntled investors have filed a lawsuit against the developers behind $HAWK, accusing them of fraudulent misrepresentation and improper registration. Notably, Welch has not been named as a defendant in the case, suggesting that her role may have been more promotional than operational.
Still, questions linger about her involvement, as she heavily endorsed the coin in social media posts leading up to its launch. Critics argue that even if Welch wasn’t directly managing the project, she played a key role in attracting investors.
Where Is Haliey Welch Now?
Adding to the mystery, Welch has largely disappeared from the public eye since the controversy erupted. Her last podcast episode was released on December 4, 2024—the same week $HAWK launched. Since then, there have been no new uploads, social media posts, or public appearances.
The absence of any statement addressing the scandal has led to growing speculation. Some believe Welch is distancing herself to avoid legal entanglements, while others suspect she may be reevaluating her next move.
What’s Next for Haliey Welch?
Despite the current backlash, Welch still commands a massive following, and many fans remain loyal. If she chooses to return, she could potentially rebrand herself, issue a public explanation, or even relaunch Talk Tuah with a new direction.
However, the damage to her reputation may already be done. With lawsuits pending and trust eroded among investors, Welch faces an uphill battle if she hopes to regain credibility.
For now, her silence speaks louder than words. Whether she’s planning a comeback or choosing to step away from the spotlight remains to be seen.

Several top FBI officials are told to resign or face demotion as Trump continues federal purge
Several top FBI officials are told to resign or face demotion as Trump continues federal purge
FBI headquarters building is seen in Washington.
Yuri Gripas | Reuters
WASHINGTON — Several top FBI executives promoted by former Director Christopher Wray were told Thursday to resign or retire and that they will be demoted or reassigned if they don’t leave, according to one current and three former bureau officials.
The purge of senior officials includes about a half-dozen “executive assistant directors,” who are some of the bureau’s top managers overseeing criminal, national security and cyber investigations. They are career civil servants, meaning they can’t be fired without cause.
Follow live politics coverage here
A current FBI official told NBC News that the move would be “hugely disruptive,” while a former official who is talking to people at the FBI said there’s a lot of anger because the affected employees aren’t considered political figures in any way.
The FBI declined to comment on the personnel moves, which were first reported by CNN.
Wray, whom President Donald Trump appointed to his 10-year post in 2017, resigned at the end of the Biden administration.
The moves at the FBI come amid a wave of terminations in the first 10 days of the Trump administration.
Trump fired 18 inspectors general last week, including watchdogs for the State, Defense and Labor departments and the Department of Health and Human Services.
Trump defended the firings, saying, “Some were unfair or were not doing the job.”
We’re looking to hear from federal government workers. If you’re willing to talk with us, please email us at *****@*****.tld or contact us through one of these methods.
The Trump administration has also fired career attorneys at the Justice Department who were involved in prosecuting him, raising alarms over his making good on threats of retribution against those who have challenged his conduct.
Trump has picked Kash Patel to lead the FBI in his second term. Patel said at a Senate confirmation hearing Thursday that if he is confirmed the FBI won’t take retributive action.
Ken Dilanian reported from Washington and Zoë Richards from New York.

AAPL latest earnings beat expectations. Here’s what analysts had to say
AAPL latest earnings beat expectations. Here’s what analysts had to say
Analysts on Wall Street are responding favorably to Apple’s latest quarterly results , even though its iPhone revenue came in weaker than expected. For its fiscal 2025 first quarter, the iPhone maker’s earnings and revenue beat analysts’ expectations, with overall revenue rising 4%. However, iPhone sales missed estimates and slightly fell year over year, while overall sales in China dropped 11.1% in the quarter. Apple CEO Tim Cook said: “During the December quarter, we saw that in markets where we had rolled out Apple intelligence, that the year-over-year performance on the iPhone 16 family was stronger than those markets where we had not rolled out Apple intelligence.” On any potential impact from President Donald Trump’s tariff strategy, the chief executive also said in an earnings call with analysts: “We are monitoring the situation and don’t have anything more to add than that.” Last week, Trump revealed that his team is considering a 10% tariff on ******** goods, a move that could be implemented as soon as Saturday. Apple shares gained more than 3% in the premarket Friday. Below are comments from analysts at some of the biggest Wall Street firms following the results. JPMorgan: overweight rating, price target at $270 per share Analyst Samik Chatterjee’s target, up from $260, calls for 13.6% upside from Thursday’s close. “While it is still early days for subsidies in the China market, iPhones qualifying for the recent subsidies as well as a depleted channel inventory will help the company moderate the revenue decline of -11% y/y exhibited in F1Q in the region and is likely driving the company’s confidence in guiding for low- to mid-single digit revenue growth again in the March-Q, while overcoming incremental FX headwinds (of -250 bps).” Goldman Sachs: buy rating, price target at $294 per share Analyst Michael Ng’s forecast implies 23.7% upside from here. “AAPL guided to F2Q25E revenue growth of ****-MSD% yoy (GSe: +6%) with Services revenue growth of low double-digits, which in our view, likely includes the benefit from the to-be-announced iPhone SE4, as well as new MacBooks and iPads. The strong F2Q25E outlook and commentary on Apple Intelligence’s impact on iPhone demand to-date helps strengthen the favorable investment thesis around an iPhone upgrade cycle.” Morgan Stanley: overweight rating, price target at $275 per share Analyst Erik Woodring’s target, which he raised from $273, reflects 15.7% upside ahead. “An in-line Dec Q and better-than-feared Mar Q create a cleaner catalyst path into the April iOS 18.4 launch & June’s WWDC. China remains a key wildcard, but Apple Intelligence is bolstering iPhone performance in regions where available, setting up a return to iPhone growth in FY26.” Evercore ISI: outperform rating, price target at $260 per share Analyst Amit Daryanani’s outlook implies 9.4% upside potential. He previously had a price target of $250. “While China was clearly disappointing – AAPL attributed ½ the drop in sales to Channel inventory adjustments and remainder to macro/competitive environment – though expectation would be as Apple Intelligence is rolled out along with economic incentives it should help drive demand higher (vs. Dec).” TD Cowen: buy rating, price target at $290 per share Analyst Krish Sankar’s target, up from $290, calls for around 22% upside from Thursday’s close. “China demand was not as bad as feared given holiday price discounting and share loss headlines. Critically, AAPL comments indicating the initial regions where iPhone AI features have been rolled out are outperforming other geos should support sentiment on the stock.” Bank of America: buy rating, price target at $265 per share Analyst Wamsi Mohan’s outlook implies 11.5% upside potential. Mohan previously had a price target of $253. “Despite a lot of investor worries we see around iPhone demand, guidance for the Mar. quarter was better than feared. Our thesis remains that Apple Intelligence will continue to drive upgrades (as evidenced by the better sales performance in F1Q in those regions where Apple Intelligence has already been launched).”

Iron Chancellor may need flexibility to get growth
Iron Chancellor may need flexibility to get growth
BBC
It has been a wild January for Rachel Reeves and frankly for economics in the *** and the world.
When Labour swept to victory last summer, Reeves pledged she would be an “iron” chancellor, reining in public spending and improving the lives of working people through growing the economy. Without solid public finances, she argued, the government couldn’t achieve any of its other aims.
This month has tested that plan.
It started off with a global bond market tantrum – *** borrowing costs hit their highest level for several years and the pound fell sharply.
Some argued that Reeves’s Budget decisions had made the *** more vulnerable to such shocks. The prime minister was forced to confirm Reeves had his backing after political opponents called for her resignation.
Getty Images
Rachel Reeves delivered a speech on growth in January 2025
The market turbulence sparked concerns that a verdict of sorts was being made on the chancellor.
Reeves has pledged not to borrow to fund day-to-day spending and to get debt falling as a share of national income by the end of this Parliament. That meant, the rise in global and *** debt interest costs would require some spending cuts.
The message was sent out that the government, with its massive majority, could do and would do what it takes to keep to the self-imposed rules, which it said were “non-negotiable”.
The markets have now recovered all their negative moves. Short term and long term government borrowing costs are all lower than at the beginning of the year.
While the “gilt crisis” hyperbole was overdone, there have been consequences.
From doom to promises of a *****
The chancellor sped up an already planned “drumbeat” of pro-growth measures, culminating in this week’s speech. Reeves’s counsel of doom and warnings about ****** holes and pain has been replaced by a promise of an investment *****.
She has vowed a new runway at Heathrow, visas for those with AI and life science skills and said she would ease the non-dom ban to allow a more generous phase out of tax benefits.
Getty Images
Heathrow boss Thomas Woldbye sounded a little coy after plans for a third runway were confirmed
Alongside this are plans to make it easier to build, delays to new rules on banks and the ousting of the boss of the competition regulator, which shows she’s serious on growth. As Meatloaf might have scripted for her: “I would do anything for growth”.
But Reeves’s plans are not yet a fully fledged growth plan. Her announcements signal that she is willing to take a series of political hits to foster long term growth.
The chancellor will deploy the near total executive power from her party’s commons majority to flatten the sort of opposition that has prevented or critically delayed these sorts of plans in the past.
Getty Images
The prime minister was forced to confirm Reeves had his backing
Some outside advisers who support the chancellor say that stability is not enough, and nor is planning, and nor is deregulation.
Reeves has not pledged any allocation of public money to these grand projects.
Heathrow boss Thomas Woldbye sounded a little coy after plans for a third runway were confirmed, saying they would not spend more money on it unless they really believed it was going to happen.
“This will take years, it will take what I call Churchillian resolve and lots of ingenuity but we can trust a government that will be with us for many years to deliver this,” he told the BBC.
Reeves’s *** growth mission
Reeves is focusing on a very specific type of growth – increasing the supply of goods and services. She believes a lack of this supply side growth has held back the ***, and she is on a mission to remove barriers, and open new markets.
For example, Reeves is very concerned about small businesses who have told her they have given up on exporting to the EU, because post Brexit it is now easier to export to the US.
Getty Images
Reeves is focusing on increasing the supply of goods and services
At a meeting last week, one business told the chancellor that exports to Europe meant for Christmas, had only just arrived.
The problem is that while the chancellor awaits a long term growth spurt, she has prioritised stabilising public finances through significant tax rises.
In April, employers will be hit with an increase in national insurance payments and a higher minimum wage. These costs could be passed on in price rises meaning inflation – already higher than target at 2.5%, could remain sticky.
Reeves would have preferred employers to squeeze pay settlements rather than raise prices or cut staff.
Reuters
Going for growth is going to require some very tricky navigation
Retail and hospitality businesses using low wage labour will be most impacted by the bumper rise in minimum wages. Downing Street insiders acknowledge that many domestic business bosses are “grumpy” as they put it.
The concern is whether the impact will show up in higher unemployment. At last October’s Budget, the government’s independent forecaster the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) predicted extra government spending would help boost the economy and bring unemployment down to 4% this year. Some outside forecasters now think it will top 5%.
It is a critical few months for the animal spirits in the economy to reignite.
How far will she go?
But how far is Rachel Reeves willing to push this pro-growth agenda?
Will she follow the US away from the decarbonisation path to benefit from cheaper hydrocarbon prices promised by President Trump? Will she accede to construction industry requests to import foreign workers to meet the target to build 1.5 million homes?
Will she push the Brexit reset to remove all the barriers to ***-EU trade in food and farm products, and many goods too? Will she offer Britain to the global tech and pharma industries as a deregulatory haven from the EU and US respectively?
Getty Images
Reeves pictured as she went to present the budget last autumn
Taken at face value, she will do most of this, with big political consequences. Take the Brexit reset. Cabinet ministers at The World Economic Forum were delighted with the tone of the EU’s new trade chief Maros Sefcovic in his interview with me, saying he was open to Britain joining the Pan-Euro-Mediterranean Convention (PEM).
The arrangement allows for tariff-free trade of some goods from across dozens of countries in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
But if the *** demanded effective single market treatment in certain sectors, it would need to follow the EU rule book in those areas. There would be counter asks, such as extending EU fishing arrangements in *** waters, and some sort of youth cultural exchange scheme.
The need for delicate diplomacy
Push is coming to shove on these issues, and the question is whether the chancellor’s pro growth agenda is the overwhelming factor in making decisions. I suspect it is.
However, that approach will require delicate diplomacy in the middle of a potential goods tariff war. If Trump follows through on his threat of a universal tariff then the G7 could decide to coordinate retaliatory tariffs. Does the *** join in?
What if the US decides it wants its allies to help contain China’s tech ascendancy? What if Trump wants to deter the *** from rebuilding free-flowing trade with the EU?
Getty Images
The government knows China is a rival in AI development
The sudden emergence of China’s AI expertise via DeepSeek underlines how important it is to be nimble. There was only one mention of China in the government’s big AI paper earlier this month – in Science Secretary Peter Kyle’s foreword.
The pharma industry is lobbying the government to quietly open the door for relocation of key top talent into the ***, concerned about the Trump / Robert F Kennedy Jr approach to medicines regulation. Our leading universities are saying that for the first time since Brexit, it’s easier to recruit some of the very best international scientists who are not keen to bring up their families in Trump’s America.
Trump’s decision to abandon Biden’s green subsidies also levels the playing field for net zero investment here.
Getty Images
How far is Rachel Reeves willing to push the pro-growth agenda?
After a tumultuous start to the year, with the US administration threatening different tariffs almost every day, and tech giant shares falling over concerns they’ve been overvalued in the light of China’s AI app DeepSeek, the *** remains a safe haven for investors.
The self declared iron chancellor remains very attached to stability. But zero growth is a form of stability too. In choppy global seas, going for growth is going to require some very tricky navigation – and it will make some big domestic political waves too.

More forecast rain in Galle is all that stands between crumbling Sri Lanka and an embarrassing early defeat in the opening Test against Australia.
Sri Lanka looked on track to be bowled out twice on a rain-spoiled third day, but the rampaging tourists are now poised to land their knockout blow across the weekend.
Less than a session was played on the third day, but Australia have the hosts 5-136 and still 518 runs behind their first-innings score.
The rain delay, which paused the game half-an-hour before lunch, is the third in as any days as thunderstorms circle the city.
Significant rain is also scheduled for Saturday, with clearer skies tipped for Sunday if the game ekes into a fifth and final day.
Australia’s chances of batting just once in this match were bolstered by the weather, with an extended rest likely to give stand-in captain Steve Smith the confidence his spin-heavy bowling attack will be good to back up their efforts.
A declaration deep into the final session on Thursday evening left Sri Lanka’s middle-order exposed by the time they reached the third day.
Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc then took Australia’s first wicket of the day when Kamindu Mendis went chasing a ball down the leg-side and guided it through to Alex Carey behind the stumps.
It was a frustrating dismissal from the promising Mendis on a wicket lauded by batters already this week.
Matthew Kuhnemann — who had thumb surgery just two weeks before his first Test in two years — took the wicket of Dhananjaya de Silva.
The Sri Lankan captain came storming out of his crease to a ball Kuhnemann then tossed out wide and the stumps were whisked off by Carey.
It left former skipper and No.3 Dinesh Chandimal unbeaten on 63 but running out of batting reinforcements, while Kusal Mendis is on 10 off 25 ******.
Starc was far more effective than Sri Lankan pace counterpart Asitha Fernando because he bowled more than 10-kilometres faster.
He had 2-13 from eight overs when players went off for rain.
Ground staff played an on-again-off-again game with the giant blue covers that shield the outfield through the afternoon, but few genuine attempts to resume play were made.
They came closest just before tea, when umpires pencilled in play to return around the scheduled tea break.
Hopes of playing a final session were quashed just minutes later with staff worried about another evening pour.

Australia confirmed leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha would join the Test squad in Galle as their second development player after Ollie Peake, but is not expected to be considered for selection.
If Australia coast to a resounding victory as expected in coming days, they could mix up their side for the second Test and a big win could be West *********** young gun Cooper Connolly’s best hope of a Test debut.
It is unlikely selectors will tweak with their batting line-up after their most successful outing in more than seven years, especially given back-up top-order option Sam Konstas has been felled by a stomach bug.
They appear keen on Travis Head opening the batting in the sub-continent — with their next trip there the blockbuster reunion with India in 2027 — and Usman Khawaja locked himself into the side with his maiden double-century.

******* party could rely on far-right again for immigration vote
******* party could rely on far-right again for immigration vote
The man tipped to be Germany’s next leader could rely on support from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party for the second time in a week, a move that has been widely condemned.
Friedrich Merz, the leader of the conservative CDU party, may need AfD votes to pass legislation toughening immigration laws.
Former chancellor Angela Merkel has accused him of turning his back on a previous pledge not to work with AfD in the Bundestag.
Merz has defended his actions as “necessary” and said that he had not sought nor wanted AfD’s support.
“A right decision doesn’t become wrong just because the wrong people agree to it,” he said.
On Friday morning the CDU said it had requested a pause ahead of the vote and appeared to be holding talks on whether the legislation should be voted on or sent back to committee.
The CDU is leading in the polls ahead of Germany’s snap election next month. The AfD is currently polling in second place, although Merz has ruled out any kind of coalition with them.
Thousands of people took to the streets of Germany on Thursday night in opposition to the CDU’s cooperation with the far-right.
While Wednesday’s vote saw a non-binding motion over changes to immigration law pass through parliament, actual legislation will be tabled on Friday aimed at curbing immigration numbers and family reunion rights.
However, his proposed measures are highly unlikely to come into effect this side of February’s snap election and – if they did – could clash with EU law.
The proposed legislation is opposed by parties including current Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats (SPD). Scholz is among those to have criticised Merz’s reliance on the AfD, calling it an “unforgivable mistake”.
“Since the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany over 75 years ago, there has always been a clear consensus among all democrats in our parliaments: we do not make common cause with the far right,” he said.
In her rare intervention in politics, Merkel said he was breaking a pledge made in November to work with the Social Democratic Party and the Greens to pass legislation, not the AfD. She described the pledge as an “expression of great state political responsibility”.
Alice Weidel, the leader of the AfD, meanwhile, accused mainstream parties on Wednesday of disrespecting ******* voters by refusing to work with her party.
Sections of the AfD have been classed as right-wing extremists by domestic intelligence, but
Wednesday’s vote saw Germany’s already fraught debate on immigration has flared up following a series of fatal attacks where the suspect is an asylum-seeker, most recently in the city of Aschaffenburg.
It has become a central issue in campaigning for the election, which was triggered by the collapse of Scholz’s governing coalition.

“The Sopranos” made it famous. Now, The Star-Ledger is stopping print editions.
Two longstanding New York City area newspapers, including one immortalized in “The Sopranos,” are vanishing from newsstands, leaving Jersey City without printed news as media struggle against nationwide headwinds.
Flowers and a copy of The Star-Ledger sit at the booth where the final scene of the final episode of the HBO show “The Sopranos” was filmed, at Holsten’s restaurant, on June 20, 2013 in Bloomfield, N.J. “Sopranos” star James Gandolfini, who played troubled mob boss Tony Soprano, died the day before at age 51 in Rome.

Across the river from New York, the fate of New Jersey’s Star-Ledger — read by fictional mob boss Tony Soprano — and The Jersey Journal is leaving locals without a physical paper and some journalists, paperboys and printers without jobs.
The Star-Ledger is going online-only and The Jersey Journal is closing up shop altogether, reports NJ.com, which posts content from both, among other outlets. NJ Advance Media owns The Jersey Journal, The Star-Ledger and N.J.com.
“I’m heartbroken,” said Margaret Doman, at the foot of a cluster of mushrooming buildings in Jersey City, within eyesight of Manhattan.
“I use The Jersey Journal for a lot of things — not just to read the news, but to post information, and to get in tune with what’s going on around the town,” said the long-time resident and community activist.
“The Jersey Journal ceasing publication is like losing an old friend,” said one letter to the editor.
In the thick of Journal Square, named for the daily founded in 1867, “Jersey Journal” in giant red letters adorns the building that once housed the newsroom, long since displaced.

With 17 employees and fewer than 15,000 copies sold daily, The Jersey Journal could not withstand the body blow that was the closure of the printworks it shared with The Star-Ledger, New Jersey’s largest daily, which goes all-digital this weekend.
The Star-Ledger’s president, Wes Turner, pointed to an op-ed on NJ.com that stated the closure was forced by “rising costs, decreasing circulation and reduced demand for print.”
The newspaper, which featured in the iconic New Jersey ****** TV series, won the coveted Pulitzer Prize in 2005 for a series of articles on the political upheavals of then-governor Jim McGreevey.
But the scoops didn’t save the daily, as sales plummeted and the papere went through several rounds of painful buyouts.
With the switch to all-digital, even its editorial board will be abolished, announced one of its members, Tom Moran.
Local newspapers in decline across the nation
The decline of the local press has been a slow, painful death across the United States.
According to the latest report from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, more than one-third of newspapers — 3,300 in all — have gone out of print since 2005.
They’ve been victims of declining readership and the consolidation of titles into a handful of corporate masters.
“When a newspaper disappears, there’s a number of tangible consequences,” said the report’s director, Zach Metzger.
“Voter participation tends to decline. Split-ticket voting tends to decline. Incumbents are reelected more often. Rates of corruption can increase. Rates of police misconduct can increase.”
Fewer local papers and the domination of major national issues in the news cycle are also often given as reasons for the rampant polarization of American society between left and right.
Steve Alessi, president of NJ Advance Media, wrote on NJ.com that the termination of print “represents the next step into the digital future of journalism in New Jersey” and promised new investment for the website, which claims over 15 million unique monthly visitors.
He touted several flagship investigative projects on political extremism, as well as mismanagement in the region’s private schools, the production of podcasts, and newsletters to attract new readers.
“There is still a digital divide across the country. … My concern is for people who are not digitally acclimated, they still go to their public libraries or a newsstand to see a physical copy of the paper,” said Kenneth Burns, president of New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists.
“There are not a whole lot of outlets keeping tabs on local affairs already,” he said, calling The Star-Ledger an “institution.”

AI Generates Fluorescent Protein That Nature Would Need 500 Million Years to Evolve
AI Generates Fluorescent Protein That Nature Would Need 500 Million Years to Evolve
A novel fluorescent protein has been created using artificial intelligence (AI), with scientists estimating that its natural evolution would have required half a billion years. The protein, known as esmGFP, was designed by an AI model trained on extensive biological data, leading to the development of a structure distinct from naturally occurring green fluorescent proteins found in jellyfish and corals. The breakthrough is expected to contribute to advancements in medicine and protein engineering.
Study Reveals AI-Driven Molecular Evolution
According to the study published in Science, the AI model ESM3 was used to generate esmGFP by filling in missing genetic sequences based on data from 2.78 billion naturally occurring proteins. The result was a protein that shares only 58 percent of its sequence with the closest known equivalent, a human-modified protein derived from bubble-tip sea anemones (Entacmaea quadricolor). Scientists noted that 96 distinct genetic mutations would have been required for esmGFP to evolve naturally, a process estimated to take over 500 million years.
How the AI Model Works
The AI model, developed by researchers at EvolutionaryScale, functions by predicting and completing protein sequences using language-modeling techniques similar to those used in text-based AI systems. Unlike traditional evolution, where proteins undergo gradual changes through natural selection, ESM3 generates functional proteins by exploring vast possible genetic variations. Speaking to Live Science, Alex Rives, co-founder and chief scientist at EvolutionaryScale, stated that the AI system learns fundamental biological principles and can create functional proteins beyond the constraints of natural evolution.
Applications in Biotechnology
Green fluorescent proteins are widely used in research laboratories, often attached to other proteins to track cellular processes. The study’s findings suggest that AI-driven protein engineering could accelerate drug development and other applications in biotechnology. Tiffany Taylor, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Bath, noted in her analysis of the preprint study that while AI models like ESM3 offer new possibilities in protein design, the broader complexities of natural selection should not be overlooked.

SAP sees growing demand for sustainability software despite U.S. climate disengagement
SAP sees growing demand for sustainability software despite U.S. climate disengagement
(Reuters) – Germany’s SAP sees a growing global demand for software to manage and document companies’ sustainability efforts despite a trend of weakening climate protection targets in the United States, its chief financial officer, Dominik Asam, said in an interview with Reuters.
This week, the United Nations said the U.S. will withdraw from the Paris climate agreement on Jan. 27, 2026, after Washington formally notified Secretary-General Antonio Guterres of President Donald Trump’s decision to quit.
“The topic of sustainability will not disappear from investors’ discussions,” Asam said, adding that he expects companies to still need reliable figures and analysis tools to make decisions on the topic.
“I spoke to many investors at the World Economic Forum in Davos who are concerned with sustainability. They are very optimistic despite the recent U.S. elections,” he adds.
In this context, he sees potential for SAP’s fledgling Green Ledger software that he said helps companies make their sustainability reporting as verifiable as a financial balance sheet, which will be required from 2028 in the framework of the European Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).
Apart from chemical firm Covestro, it’s mainly SAP using the software, but the CFO expects contracts to be signed. “A lot will happen in the second half of this year,” he said.

Hairy Bikers Dave Myers’ last TV motorbike to be sold at auction
Hairy Bikers Dave Myers’ last TV motorbike to be sold at auction

The motorbike will be auctioned in March, with all money going to charity
The last motorbike ridden by Dave Myers during the making of the Hairy Bikers’ TV show is due to be sold at auction.
Myers found fame alongside his friend Si King as part of the motorcycle-riding cooking duo and their last show together was broadcast shortly after Myers’ death last February.
The BSA Goldstar he rode in the BBC’s Hairy Bikers Go West is due to be auctioned in March, with all the money going to charity.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to have such a significant bike – Dave Myers was so well respected,” said Mike Davis, a senior motorcycle specialist at H&H Classics which will hold the auction.
Although the bike is a new “standard model”, Mr Davis said he was hoping the auction would raise more than its ordinary price tag.
“You can buy them new today and they range from £6,000 to £8,500.
“I would love it to go for £10,000 plus, but the sky is the limit.”
He added it would be very difficult to put a value on it and he was expecting both BSA collectors and Dave Myers’ fans to bid for it.
‘Motorcycling history’
Mr Davis said the bike was being sold without fees and all money raised would go to the NSPCC and the Institute for ******* Research.
The BSA Goldstar was first produced in 1938, but it wasn’t until the 1950s that it became popular.
“It’s what every rocker wanted, you were guaranteed to go over 100mph,” said Mr Davis.

The auction is due to be held on 26 March at The National Motorcycle Museum in Bickenhill, Solihull, which currently displays the bike together with Myers’ riding gear.
James Hewing, museum director, said: “Dave was a beloved figure in both motorcycling and entertainment.”
He added the auction would enable someone to “own a piece of motorcycling history” while celebrating Myers’ legacy.
Myers’ death from ******* sparked a huge celebration of his life in his Cumbrian hometown of Barrow last year.
Dave Day raised more than £120,000 for charity and a second edition of the event is expected to take place in June.
