Claiming early while still working full time isn’t always the best strategy, and your situation is a perfect example. Yes, it is true you can claim early. The earliest individuals can claim their Social Security retirement benefits is age 62, which will permanently reduce your benefits since you haven’t reached your Full Retirement Age, or FRA. It is also true that there is an income limit on benefits claimed early while still working, and if your earnings surpass that limit, you won’t see any of the benefits. This puts you in a not-so-ideal situation, because you’ve basically put yourself in a box. You can’t actually see the money you’re supposed to get from Social Security, but on the record you’re claiming benefits early, so the amount you’d get if you weren’t working is permanently reduced. Story Continues Had you waited to claim benefits until you were FRA, or at least receiving less money through part-time work or some other income scenario, you’d see more money coming in from Social Security. That is because you’d either be at or nearer to FRA, or you wouldn’t be passing the income limits set forth for people who claim and still work. The Social Security Administration deducts — not reduces, which happens when claiming early — your benefits based on your earnings. The annual limit for people under Full Retirement Age in 2025 is $23,400. For those who will reach Full Retirement Age this year, the limit is $62,160 for the months prior to FRA. For those who will not be at FRA for the entire year, the agency deducts $1 for every $2 over the limit, whereas if you turn full retirement age in 2025, the deduction is $1 for every $3. Here is an example: You’re claiming early and your monthly benefit should be $1,000, or $12,000 for the year. You earn $50,000, which is $26,600 over the annual limit. Because the benefit is reduced $1 for every $2 over the limit, you’ve completely surpassed the limit, so your entire benefit would be deducted. Alternatively, if you earned say $25,000 for the year, that’s $1,600 over the limit, so your benefit would be deducted by $800. “When we figure out how much to deduct from your benefits, we count only the wages you make from your job or your net profit if you’re self-employed,” the agency said. “We include bonuses, commissions, and vacation pay. We don’t count pensions, annuities, investment income, interest, veterans benefits, or other government or military retirement benefits.” Of course, you do eventually get that money back. When you reach FRA, the agency will recalculate the benefit “to give you credit for the months we reduced or withheld benefits due to your excess earnings.” You may be able to fix this. Social Security beneficiaries may be able to withdraw their claim if they’ve changed their minds, the Social Security Administration said. “To withdraw your claim, you must meet all of the requirements, including making the request in writing and repaying the benefits that you received,” it said. Beneficiaries can cancel or withdraw their applications up to 12 months after benefit approval. Here’s more on that from SSA. If you went that route, you still would not receive benefits, but you would get more money when you finally do claim. Credit: Future Intel has been talking numbers this week with the announcement of some reasonably positive financials for the final quarter of 2024 (you can read the full transcript here). With that comes the usual chat around product and official confirmation that the Panther Lake mobile CPU is still due in the second half of 2024 using Intel’s all-important new 18A silicon node. But Intel said 18A wouldn’t necessarily win all future CPU designs and also revealed how slowly the company’s transition to advanced silicon has been. In 2024, just over 5% of Intel’s internal chip manufacturing was on its latest EUV-based nodes. “Looking ahead to the rest of the year, we will strengthen our client road map with the launch of Panther Lake, our lead product on Intel 18A in the second half of 2025,” Intel’s new interim co-CEO Michelle Holthaus said on the latest earnings calls with the usual money men and spreadsheet soothsayers. However, Holthaus also implied that Panther Lake using Intel’s new 18A node doesn’t automatically mean that all of the company’s future CPUs will be coming back in house. For its next-gen desktop CPU Nova Lake, it seems Intel is planning to split production between its own 18A silicon and likely a TSMC node, perhaps N2. “We look at each generation of products based on what’s the right product, what’s the right process, what’s the right market window and what allows our customers to win. So, for Panther Lake, that was 18A,” Holthaus explains. “Then as you look forward, to our next-generation product for client after that, Nova Lake will actually have die both inside and outside [Intel Foundry] for that process. So, you’ll actually see compute tiles inside and outside,” she said. The Lunar Lake CPU came out after Meteor Lake, but ditched the then-new Intel 4 node for production at TSMC. | Credit: Intel During the call, Holthaus made generally positive noises about the 18A node which is critical to Intel’s future, not only for its own chips but also as a foundry service offering to customers in competition to Taiwanese megafoundry TSMC. But the fact that Intel doesn’t plan to make Nova Lake exclusively on 18A is, perhaps, revealing. It is not, however, entirely surprising. Despite plans to begin selling Panther Lake chips built on 18A later this year, by Intel’s own admission it has barely begun scaling up production of chips on its latest Intel 4 and Intel 3 nodes. “EUV wafer revenue grew from 1% of total revenue in 2023 to greater than 5% in 2024,” revealed Intel’s CFO David Zinsner. Intel 4 is company’s first commercially available node to use EUV or extreme ultraviolet lithography and is used for the Meteor Lake family of Laptop CPUs. However, the follow up to Meteor Lake, Lunar Lake, somewhat surprisingly reverted to TSMC for production, as did the Arrow Lake desktop family including the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K. In other words, Intel is planning on cranking out 18A chips shortly despite having barely begun the transition to Intel 4 (or Intel 3, which is a derivation of Intel 4). Given that previous CES, Pat Gelsinger, admitted to betting the company on 18A it’s needed to keep the new node on track and get product actually built on it whatever state the manufacturing is in with the Intel 4/3 nodes. With all that in mind, it remains a very mixed picture at Intel. Even if the company does manage to release some Panther Lake chips on 18A later this year, questions will remain about the viability of its production technology. Intel doesn’t seem to have been able to ramp Intel 4 and Intel 3, despite releasing Meteor Lake well over a year ago. So, who knows what will happen with 18A. ******** startup tackles plastic waste by converting it to fuel ******** startup tackles plastic waste by converting it to fuel BOCA DEL RIO, Mexico (AP) — A startup in Mexico is trying to help get a handle on one Gulf coast city’s plastic waste problem by converting it into gasoline, diesel and other fuels. With less than 10% of the world’s plastics being recycled, Petgas’ idea is that rather than letting discarded plastic become waste, it can become productive again as fuel. Petgas developed a machine in the port city of Boca del Rio that uses pyrolysis, a thermodynamic process that heats plastics in the absence of oxygen, breaking it down to produce gasoline, diesel, kerosene, paraffin and coke. Carlos Parraguirre Díaz, chief technology officer at Petgas, said that in a week, the machine can process 1.5 tons of plastics and produce 356 gallons (1,350 liters) of fuel. The process does require propane to initiate the heating, but once the pyrolysis begins, the gas it produces is used to keep it going, according to the company. And using fuel it produces does throw off carbon dioxide, but the company says its net impact is less than comparable fuels because their fuel is lower in sulfur. Parraguirre Díaz said that the machine shows that “we can transform that (plastic) into a product that’s useful and has high value in the world economy.” “In place of having a dump, it’s as if we dug into the earth and found hydrocarbons that can be used by our community,” he said. Global plastic production, already exceeding 400 million tons annually, could surge by 70% by 2040 without policy changes, according to the United Nations. China was by far the biggest exporter of plastic products in 2023, followed by Germany and the United States. Many plastics are used for packaging. Every day, the equivalent of 2,000 garbage trucks full of plastic are dumped into the world’s oceans, rivers and lakes. Negotiations on a treaty to end plastic pollution concluded in Busan, South Korea in December without reaching an agreement. This was supposed to be the fifth and final round to produce the first legally binding treaty on plastics pollution, including in the oceans, by the end of 2024. Petgas envisions a circular economy where plastic is no longer waste, but rather a resource for the production of energy. To that end, the company has organized plastic collection drives to remove bottles and other material from the city’s beaches. It encourages people to bring plastic waste to a drop-off point and receives most of its material clean and shredded from a recycler. Nappi, who led Boeing’s Starliner program from 2022 through major engineering issues and testing mishaps, is currently in a new role “focused on identifying opportunities for streamlining improvement across the division’s space programs until he retires next month,” the company said. Mulholland previously led Boeing’s Starliner program from 2011 before switching in 2020 to the company’s International Space Station program, which works closely with NASA under a multibillion-dollar station operations contract. Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, in development under a $4.5 billion NASA contract to ferry astronauts to the ISS, has faced an array of engineering challenges since 2019. In its first test mission last summer flying astronauts, Starliner was forced by NASA to leave its crew aboard the ISS and return empty in September over problems with its propulsion system. A panel of senior NASA officials in August had voted to have a Crew Dragon capsule from Elon Musk’s SpaceX bring them back instead, deeming Starliner too risky for the astronauts. Paul Hill, a veteran NASA flight director and member of the agency’s Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel, said during a quarterly panel meeting on Thursday that NASA and Boeing continue to investigate Starliner’s propulsion system. A Boeing spokesperson said on Thursday that the company and NASA have not yet determined what Starliner’s next mission will look like, such as whether it will need to repeat its crewed flight test before receiving NASA certification for routine flights. Credit: Intel Intel on Thursday said that its codenamed Clearwater Forest processor for data centers will only be launched in the first half of 2026, roughly two years after the company introduced its Xeon 6-series CPUs and one or two quarters behind schedule. By contrast, Intel’s Panther Lake product for client PCs — which uses the same 18A process technology — is on track for a 2H 2025 launch. The delay of the key server processor comes amid the company’s unveiling of Intel’s financial results for the fourth quarter of 2024 and the entire year, which revealed massive losses. Paired with Intel’s announced cancellation of its Falcon Shores AI GPUs, Intel’s competitive posture for the exploding AI market is now severely weakened. “We are also making good progress on Clearwater Forest, our first Intel 18A server product that we plan to launch in the first half of next year,” said Michelle Johnston Holthaus, interim co-CEO of Intel, during the company’s earnings call on Thursday. Holthaus cited difficulties with Clearwater’s packaging technology but said the underlying 18A process node remains strong. Currently, Intel is ramping up production of its energy-efficient Xeon 6 ‘Sierra Forest’ and high-performance Xeon 6 ‘Granite Rapids’ processors. It believes that these CPUs will be instrumental in stabilizing its market share this year. However, with the next-generation Xeon 7-series ‘Clearwater Forest’ and Xeon 7 ‘Diamond Rapids,’ Intel probably expects to turn the tables and start regaining market share. However, there may be a setback to this plan, as Intel originally promised to launch Clearwater Forest in 2025, but it now says that the new CPUs will be released in the first half of 2026. The delay will affect Intel’s competitive position in the data center market and postpone potential design wins with interested parties. Clearwater Forest holds additional significance for Intel, as this is the first data center CPU with compute chiplets manufactured on the Intel 18A process technology (1.8nm-class) and featuring a Foveros 3D base die fabbed on the Intel 3 production node. If the company can mass-produce Clearwater Forest cost-effectively, it will be a major testament to its 18A manufacturing process—which happens to be the first technology developed both for Intel and its foundry customers—as a success. Intel’s fourth-quarter results for 2024 showed that the company earned $14.3 billion in revenue, up $1 billion from the previous quarter but down 7% from the same quarter a year ago. They go to a place where they have fun and have enjoyment.” Bower said the two doctors on the plane were not affiliated with Shriners, but rather the Jet Rescue Air Ambulance.
