  1. Flexport CEO breaks down the complex, uncertain global trade landscape Flexport CEO breaks down the complex, uncertain global trade landscape As the market reels from ever-changing news about President Donald Trump’s tariff hikes, Flexport CEO Ryan Petersen detailed how his customers are dealing with a volatile global trade environment in a Monday interview with CNBC’s Jim Cramer. “It’s very hard to plan a supply chain when it’s changing day to day, so I think it’s really hard for these businesses to figure out, you know, what is the government going to do, and how should they set themselves up,” he said. “Possible that this will lead to higher prices in, for consumer goods, but there’s all kinds of variables that may lower taxes or make, create a simpler regulatory framework that might increase demand.” Flexport offers services that help companies manage global supply chain logistics. According to Petersen, the company’s customer base has been trying to import more and more goods as they’ve expected escalating duties, especially with China. Over the weekend, Trump announced tariff hikes for some of the U.S.’s major trading partners, China, Canada and Mexico. Petersen said the timeline for these changes was “unprecedented,” as even during Trump’s first administration, there was at least a month’s notice before they went into effect. So, he said he wasn’t surprised when the president ended up pausing increases on Mexico for a month on Monday. Later in the evening, Trump also announced he would do the same for Canada. Petersen called the Trump administration’s roll back of the “de minimis” trade exemption a “big change.” This stipulation, often viewed as a trade loophole, allowed exporters to send goods direct to consumers and under $800 duty free, and they were often used by companies like Temu and Shein. Aside from the ******** e-commerce giants, Petersen said 30 of the top hundred Shopify brands had also been importing this way. All of these Trump changes may change the trade landscape in other ways, Petersen added. He said the price of air freight may decrease significantly if Shein and Temu are no longer shipping at their current volume. Peterson also said Houthi rebels have started to “back off a little bit” on their serious disruptions of trade in the Red Sea, perhaps due to fear of action from the Trump administration. He said there’s “rumors and talk” that container ships might start to go through the Red Sea again, which would bring down the price of ocean freight. “It’s hard to operate in a really simple ****** and white world when global trade is this complex,” Petersen said. 5. Joe Biden signs with Los Angeles talent agency CAA Joe Biden signs with Los Angeles talent agency CAA Former US President Joe Biden has signed with a Los Angeles talent agency – marking a significant step in shaping his post-presidency career. The signing marks a reunion with Creative Artists Agency (CAA), which previously represented him from 2017 to 2020. “President Biden is one of America’s most respected and influential voices in national and global affairs,” Richard Lovett, co-chair of CAA, said in a statement. “His lifelong commitment to public service is one of unity, optimism, dignity, and possibility,” Mr Lovett said. “We are profoundly honored to partner with him again.” The talent agency also has ties to former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama. Mr Biden, 82, has remained largely quiet about his plans following his five-decade career in public service, but when leaving the White House in January, he reassured supporters saying, “We’re leaving office, we’re not leaving the fight.” With only two weeks having passed since his departure from office, there’s no clear indication that he has a new book or project in the works. During his previous stint signed to the talent agency, he published his memoir, Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose in 2017. The book, which chronicled the loss of his eldest son, Beau, became a New York Times number one bestseller and inspired his American Promise book tour, widely seen as a stepping stone to his 2020 presidential bid. While keeping a relatively low profile, the former president has been spotted around his Delaware home and remains in contact with former aides and associates. He also recently became a great-grandfather, with the birth of his granddaughter, Naomi’s son. Though CAA is usually tied with big movie stars and A-list celebrities, it’s not uncommon for the agency to also work with politicians and social advocacy groups. The Obamas’ partnership with CAA through their production company, Higher Ground has led to the creation of award-winning films and television shows, including the Oscar-winning documentary, American Factory. Additionally, former presidential nominee and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton signed with CAA to represent her book projects, including Hard Choices, which chronicled her tenure as America’s top diplomat. 6. What Kanye told Bianca Censori and why naked Grammys stunt cost him $32m What Kanye told Bianca Censori and why naked Grammys stunt cost him $32m CONTENT WARNING: NUDITY Kanye West has lost a $32million deal to play in Japan as a result of his controversial stunt at the Grammys, according to sources in Tokyo. West, 47, had signed up to do two shows at the Tokyo Dome in May but following the naked display on the red carpet of the Grammys on Sunday night with his wife Bianca Censori, his investors have taken fright. A source said: “Kanye is just f***ing up every opportunity that comes to him. The stunt was creepy beyond belief and has been greeted with horror in Japan. “Japan is having a cultural awakening about women’s rights and the MeToo movement is really strong here. What he did is being seen as an act of coercive control which is utterly unacceptable. He has completely culturally misjudged Japan.” This is unfortunate as he has been living in a hotel in Tokyo for most of the last year. West was seen issuing commands to Ms Censori, on Sunday night. A lip reader, Nicola Hickling, says that he told Ms Censori, 30, wearing a ****** fur coat over a mesh ensemble with no underwear: “You’re making a scene now”. She nodded and he told her: “Make a scene, I’ll say it’ll make so much sense”. He added: “Drop it behind you and then turn, I got you.’” She then tells him: “All right, let’s go.” Camera IconKanye West has lost a $32million deal to play in Japan as a result of his controversial stunt. Credit: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images West and Ms Censori left soon after the red carpet walk, and were pictured getting into a limo. A source said: “The investors in Japan who are backing the concerts are extremely upset by this. It is highly likely that they will pull the funding for the shows. “He has greatly misjudged the tolerance of the Japanese people towards these activities. He’s just not welcome any more. This will be a big blow for him because he has been living in Japan for around a year now.” There is also fury among his American colleagues and backers over the stunt which was pulled in front of billboards asking for charitable donations to aid those who lost their homes and their lives in the wildfires in Los Angeles earlier this month. One said: “This was totally disrespectful to the Grammys. To pull a stunt at what is essentially a fundraiser and in the context of what has been going on in LA is almost inconceivably stupid, crass and wrong. It’s a f***-up on a huge scale, but all Kanye is interested in at the moment is launching his cryptocurrency, and everything else seems to pass him by.” The artist, who goes by Ye, was meant to launch a new album, Bully, before Christmas. However, it’s yet to come out and I’m told that it is now “indefinitely delayed” because he is not happy with it. As to why Ms Censori has been wearing next to nothing for almost two years, the feeling among his circle is that he is acting out a shared exhibitionist/voyeuristic kink. It’s also been suggested that he regards her both as an artist and an art form – and that she shares the opinion that what they are doing is art, and that she is his muse. Former wife Kim Kardashian, who had four children with him during their seven-year marriage, said West was controlling. Others call him domineering, unstable and narcissistic. It’s been reported that he has issued Ms Censori with a set of rules to live by, including what to wear and foods she can eat. Ms Censori is from Melbourne. Her father Leo has served time in prison for heroin offences as well as possessing a firearm. His brother Eris was a gangland killer who was given a life sentence for *******. After graduating from university in her native Melbourne and briefly running a jewellery-design business, Ms Censori got a job as an “architectural designer” at Yeezy in the US. Two years later, shortly after finalising his divorce from Ms Kardashian, he and Ms Censori were “married” in a private ceremony. No certificate appears to have been filed. West has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and compared himself to Picasso, Shakespeare and Jesus. He had a disastrous run for the US presidency in 2020, has praised Hitler, described slavery as a “choice” and vowed to go to war with the Jewish people. 8. Apple raises concern over first porn app on iPhone under EU rules Apple raises concern over first porn app on iPhone under EU rules By Stephen Nellis (Reuters) -Apple on Monday criticized a ************ app newly available on iPhones in the European Union, saying the bloc’s digital policy was undermining consumer confidence in Apple. Since it first opened the App Store on iPhones in 2008, Apple has controlled what apps could be downloaded to the devices, with then-CEO Steve Jobs saying in 2010 that keeping porn off the iPhone was Apple’s “moral responsibility” and one of the company’s major motivations for acting as a gatekeeper. In the EU, Apple’s gatekeeper status changed with the 2022 adoption of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which required Apple to allow alternative app stores. One of those stores, called AltStore, has begun distributing an app called Hot Tub, which describes itself as “a private, secure, and elegant way to browse adult content.” In a statement, Apple said it is “deeply concerned about the safety risks that hardcore porn apps of this type create for EU users, especially kids. This app and others like it will undermine consumer trust and confidence in our ecosystem.” AltStore said it had received backing from Epic Games, the creator of the “Fortnite” video game that pursued an antitrust complaint against Apple. AltStore said it used that funding to pay fees that Apple charges to alternative app stores that are under investigation by the EU, according to media reports. As part of its alternative app store process, Apple still requires apps to undergo a baseline review called “notarization” that checks for cybersecurity threats such as known malware but does not involve approving the app’s content. AltStore said Hot Tub was notarized by Apple and in a post on X described that move as making the app “the world’s 1st Apple-approved porn app,” raising Apple’s ire. “Contrary to the false statements made by the marketplace developer, we certainly do not approve of this app and would never offer it in our App Store,” Apple said in a statement. “The truth is that we are required by the European Commission to allow it to be distributed.” AltStore said comments on X were in reference to Apple’s notarization decision, and Hot Tub steered press inquiries to AltStore. In a post on X, Epic Games Chief Executive Tim Sweeney said his firm has supported laws such as the DMA because “when Apple are allowed to be the gatekeeper of competing apps and stores, they grossly misuse that power to disadvantage competition.” He added that Epic’s own app store in the EU, which rolled out last year, is not carrying the Hot Tub app and has never hosted porn apps. 9. Senate confirms fracking executive Chris Wright as Trump’s energy secretary Senate confirms fracking executive Chris Wright as Trump’s energy secretary US engineer and businessman Chris Wright arrives to testify before a US Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing on his nomination to be Secretary of Energy, on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, on January 15, 2025. Ting Shen | Afp | Getty Images The U.S. Senate on Monday confirmed Chris Wright, a fracking executive, to be President Donald Trump‘s energy secretary. The vote was 59-38, with seven Democrats and one Independent, who caucuses with Democrats, crossing the aisle. Wright, 60, the CEO of Liberty Energy LBRT.N since 2011, has said he will step down from the company once confirmed. He wrote in a Liberty report last year he believes human-caused climate change is real, but that its hazards are “distant and uncertain.” He has also said that top-down governmental policies to curb it are destined to fail. Wright will be in charge of an agency whose budget is around $50 billion, around half of which goes toward maintaining the country’s nuclear weapons stockpile. He will also be in charge of the department’s 17 national labs that cover everything from research fusion energy to supercomputing. In his nomination hearing, Wright said his first priority is to expand domestic energy production including liquefied natural gas, a super-chilled exportable form of the fuel, and nuclear energy. The U.S. became the world’s top LNG exporter in 2023 and shipments could double before the end of the decade. Wright and Lee Zeldin, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, are expected to dismantle aspects of former President Joe Biden’s climate policies and push for more fossil fuel infrastructure including gas pipelines and power plants. Wright also said in his hearing that deadly wildfires that devastated Los Angeles are “heartbreaking,” but he stood by his comments on social media in 2023 that “hype over wildfires is just hype to justify” policies to curb climate change. He is expected to play a big role in a new national energy dominance council, to be led by former North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, who is expected to be confirmed by the Senate to head the Department of the Interior. The council is expected to seek policies to maximize output of oil and gas, though the U.S. is already the world’s largest producer of both, and it is unclear how much more energy companies want to drill on federal lands. Wright will also be tasked with managing the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the world’s largest crude oil stockpile. Biden sold more than 180 million barrels, a record amount, from the reserve in 2022 to balance rising gasoline prices after Russia invaded Ukraine. The ***** sank the reserve to its lowest level in 40 years. Trump has pledged to fill the SPR to the top, but doing so will require Congress to appropriate funds. Filling it quickly could lead to higher oil prices. Like his predecessor, Jennifer Granholm, Wright says he believes geothermal power has a lot of potential to provide the U.S. with emissions-free energy by tapping heat below the ground. Geothermal projects, however, will need greater access to power transmission lines. Congress has failed to pass permitting legislation to fund new transmission lines that are needed for geothermal and other renewable energy projects. Like Granholm, Wright also supports expanding nuclear power. He was a board member of small modular reactor startup Oklo OKLO.N, which has not yet built a commercial plant. Wright will likely also be tasked with helping the U.S. build out a uranium fuel supply chain, after Biden signed a ban on imports of enriched uranium from Russia. 14. Microsoft Paint brushes up on AI Microsoft Paint brushes up on AI Microsoft Paint now features a Copilot AI New AI Paint tools include Cocreator, Image Creator, and Generative Erase Windows is adding AI search to find photos using natural language Microsoft Paint, that humble program you may only call up for a very quick image crop, is getting an AI upgrade thanks to a new Copilot button. Microsoft’s AI assistant can now help create and enhance any sketches or MS Paint-based visions you care to put down in pixels. For now, the update is limited to Windows Insiders, though, presumably, Microsoft will expand access as they refine the feature. For those with access, clicking the Copilot button in the Paint taskbar will offer a menu of AI-powered features. That includes Image Creator, which turns text prompts into images using OpenAI’s DALL-E model, Cocreator, which uses AI to combine text prompts with any doodles you make in Paint to produce a new kind of artwork, and Generative Erase, which can take objects (or people) out of an image without disturbing the background. This isn’t the first time Paint has flirted with AI. In 2023, Microsoft started adding Cocreator to Paint, followed by generative fill, which lets you remove or modify parts of an image by instructing the AI to replace them with something new. This simply organizes all the AI tools neatly under the Copilot banner, making it easier to find and use them in one place. Paint is just one of the stations Copilot is setting up across Windows. The AI is already built into the Windows taskbar, the Edge browser, the Office 365 platform, and even some keyboards. That said, offering AI in Microsoft Paint fits with how people might actually use the application. Making and editing images is the whole point of Paint; Copilot simply expands those abilities. Organization Copilot But this isn’t just about Paint. Microsoft is also rolling out updates to its AI-powered search, which first appeared in preview earlier this month. Until now, AI search only worked with files stored locally on your PC. This new update expands to cloud storage as well, meaning you can now find your OneDrive photos just by describing them. Instead of scrolling through endless folders of screenshots and vacation photos, you can type something like “beach sunset from last summer” and let AI do the rest. It’s a small but significant shift toward a more intuitive way of managing files. Paint may not be the most exciting Microsoft tool, but the incorporation of AI tools is notable as an evolution of an app that many assumed Microsoft would abandon years ago. Instead, Paint may thrive in the AI era thanks to the very simplicity that has made it appealing for decades. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. 15. Trump tariffs to hit tech heavyweights, chip giants could be next Trump tariffs to hit tech heavyweights, chip giants could be next President Donald Trump’s 10% tariffs on goods made in China take effect Tuesday, putting electronics ranging from PCs to smartphones in the crosshairs. Trump has also signaled that he is considering tariffs on chips and products associated with chips, which could put further pressure on the tech industry. The tariffs on ********-made goods are part of a package Trump has put into place on China, Canada, and Mexico. On Monday, Trump said he was pausing tariffs on Mexico for a month after productive talks with ******** President Claudia Sheinbaum. Read more: The latest news and updates as Trump’s tariff deadline approaches The tech industry depends on manufacturing facilities in China to build the electronics Americans rely on. It’s up to each company to determine how it will respond to the 10% tariff. While some might be able to absorb the impact, paying for it themselves, others will have to pass the cost on to their customers, driving up the prices of consumer and enterprise products. And if Trump decides to enact tariffs on chips, those goods could end up costing even more money at a time when consumers are still grappling with inflation. “It’s going to have a pretty significant impact,” John Vinh, KeyBanc Capital Markets equity research analyst, told Yahoo Finance in a live interview. “As those prices increase, we think there’s probably going to be a negative impact to end demand. And ultimately that’s going to flow upstream to all the chip companies.” Shares of chip stocks including Nvidia (NVDA), AMD (AMD), and Intel (INTC) were broadly down in late-afternoon trading Monday. Apple (AAPL) is perhaps the tech company most at risk from Trump’s initial round of tariffs on China. The company has a massive manufacturing base in the country, which means everything from the iPhone and iPad to the MacBook Pro is facing 10% tariffs. Add 10% to a base iPhone 16 Pro, which costs $999, and you’re looking at an increase of $99. Slap an extra 10% on the cost of a $1,599 MacBook Pro, and consumers will be on the hook for an extra $159. Apple could always ******** all or part of the 10% tariff, but that will dent profit margins. According to BofA Global Research analyst Wamsi Mohan, Apple could be forced to rely on manufacturing facilities in other countries to avoid the majority of the tariff impacts. Mohan estimates that if Apple can source 80% of products from outside of China, the company will only face a $0.05 impact on earnings. But if it can only source 50% of its devices, that number rises to between $0.07 and $0.12 depending on whether Apple raises prices. Story Continues Apple has been working with manufacturing partners in India over the last few years to ensure it can build the latest iPhone in the country, giving it a solid base to pull devices from. While working around these tariffs is doable for a company like Apple, Trump has also floated the idea of raising tariffs as high as 60%, which would have far larger implications for the iPhone maker and its customers. Apple’s iPhone 16. (AP Photo/Gene J. Puskar) · ASSOCIATED PRESS Trump provided Apple with tariff exemptions during his first term in office and could do so again this time around. But so far, he hasn’t. While Trump’s latest tariffs don’t hit the most advanced chips on the market, he has already signaled that he plans to levy separate duties on them in the future. That would force chipmakers to either raise prices on their goods or deal with the increase on their own. If chip companies do raise prices, the increase would be passed down to device partners, including PC manufacturers, which could deal with the higher costs or simply pass them on to consumers and enterprise customers. For companies like Amazon (AMZN), Google (GOOG, GOOGL), Meta (META), and Microsoft (MSFT), which are pouring money into AI chips, any price increase would mean having to pay far more to build out their data centers. Tariffs won’t get chip companies to start building manufacturing facilities overnight either. It takes years to construct a semiconductor fabrication plant, or fab. And while companies like TSMC and Samsung are building chip fabs in the US, they will still rely on facilities in other countries as well. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, however, says the risk to chip companies is low in the near term, especially as it relates to the AI trade. “Tariffs are not going to dent the AI Revolution trade as we continue to believe even if the tariffs continue for some time (60 days-90 days) there will be exemptions to this policy which likely include Apple products and Nvidia chips,” Ives wrote in an investor note. Still, there’s no guarantee that a trade fight would be that short-lived or that companies will get carve-outs as they previously did. It’s all in Trump’s hands for now. 18. Oscar talk is ‘overwhelming and amazing’ Oscar talk is ‘overwhelming and amazing’ Lizo Mzimba Entertainment Correspondent Universal Mikey Madison and Mark Eydelshteyn star in Anora In many ways Anora feels like a fairy tale. Except that the film’s title character – Ani to her friends – is a stripper and occasional sex worker. And her Prince Charming is the spoiled son of a Russian oligarch. When he spontaneously proposes, and they get married in Las Vegas, it seems all her dreams are coming true. But she quickly finds that a host of people strongly disapprove of the match. For Mikey Madison though, it is a dream of a part, where she gets to display everything from steely strength to delicate fragility. “I recognised from the beginning that she’s a very complicated character, very nuanced,” agrees Mikey Madison. “I always felt that she was someone who was very vulnerable on the inside. But is constantly covering it up with this hardness or an aggression. But I do think that she’s quite soft inside. “I think that she’s hopeful that this is her happily ever after, and I think that it’s an opportunity and I like that she doesn’t want to let go of them. And so she’s going to fight to the end to try to save it.” Getty Images Anora won the Palme d’Or after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival Both the film, and Madison’s performance in particular, have been gaining huge amounts of awards momentum. It started when the movie premiered at Cannes. “I have been working for almost a decade now, well trying to work. And that was my ultimate dream, to go to Cannes. And we had a film in the main competition, and then we won [the top prize, the Palme D’Or] and that was crazy in itself.” She calls “everything that has followed” an “absolutely wonderful, pleasant surprise”. “Especially because I think I went into it feeling really proud of the film, and like we made something special to us. And the fact that the film is also special to other people is wonderful. “It’s a dream.” Universal Anora gets married in Las Vegas Madison was relatively unknown before Anora. She had had small parts in the fifth instalment of the Scream horror franchise and in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood. The writer and director of Anora Sean Baker had seen her on screen before, and wrote the part of Ani especially for her. “She’s so unique. Not only in her physicality, but there’s something about her aura,” says Baker. “There’s something.. she’s actually quite subdued, even in real life. Her demeanour is, she’s quite reserved. “But then suddenly she can explode like no other other person I’ve ever seen, no other actor I’ve ever seen. “And I was always looking forward to those moments shooting the film, knowing that a scene would call for that. You know, to see that you don’t detect anything, and then suddenly just total eruption. To navigate through my character with all of these different genres was fun. It was a challenge, and I liked it!” ‘Oscar talk’ The 25-year-old has been nominated as best actress at every major awards ceremony, including the Golden Globes, the Batfas and the Oscars. And she is probably Demi Moore’s main rival for best actress at the Academy Awards. Speaking before her Oscar nomination, she said it felt astonishing to be part of the awards conversation. “I know that I’m incredibly overjoyed, honoured, and humbled that our film is being recognised in this way. But I’m just processing it. “It’s overwhelming and amazing, and all of the things,” she says, giving every appearance of being overcome by the acclaim her performance has been gathering. 20. Apple is ‘deeply concerned’ about AltStore’s porn app Apple is ‘deeply concerned’ about AltStore’s porn app Earlier today, third-party app store AltStore PAL, that a porn app called Hot Tub was now available to iOS users in the European Union. The marketplace, which enables people in the EU to sideload apps outside of Apple’s App Store, described it as the “first Apple-approved porn app.” Now, Apple says it’s “deeply concerned” about Hot Tub, which as TechCrunch , is the first time a porn app has been available natively for the iPhone. “We are deeply concerned about the safety risks that hardcore porn apps of this type create for EU users, especially kids,” an Apple spokesperson said in a statement. “This app and others like it will undermine consumer trust and confidence in our ecosystem that we have worked for more than a decade to make the best in the world. Contrary to the false statements made by the marketplace developer, we certainly do not approve of this app and would never offer it in our App Store.” As Apple has pointed out, its notarization guidelines that app makers shouldn’t “suggest or imply that Apple is a source or supplier of the App, or that Apple endorses any particular representation regarding quality or functionality.” AltStore’s statements would seem to go against that guidance. An image shared on AltStore’s Mastodon account. (AltStore) But in a statement to Engadget, AltStore creator Riley Testut denied making “any false statements.” Hot Tub, he says, “was submitted to Apple’s own notarization process where it was then approved by Apple employees for distribution with alternative app marketplaces such as AltStore PAL.” He said it was this approval that AltStore was referencing in its marketing. “The DMA also does not require that Apple approves apps for distribution, they have chosen to do so themselves,” he added, referring to the EU’s Digital Markets Act. Apple has made little secret of its frustration with the DMA, which requires it to allow in Europe. “The truth is that we are required by the European Commission to allow it to be distributed by marketplace operators like AltStore and Epic who may not share our concerns for user safety,” the company said in its statement about Hot Tub on Monday. In addition to AltStore, Fortnite maker and longtime Epic, recently announced plans to bring to its Epic Games app in the EU. Though AltStore Pal and Epic aren’t officially affiliated, Epic gave the alternative app store a “MegaGrant” to help fund the “core technology fees” third-party app stores are required to pay Apple. Salesforce Cutting 1,000 Roles While Hiring Salespeople for AI Salesforce Cutting 1,000 Roles While Hiring Salespeople for AI (Bloomberg) — Salesforce Inc. is cutting jobs as its latest fiscal year gets underway, according to a person familiar with the matter, even as the company simultaneously hires workers to sell new artificial intelligence products. Most Read from Bloomberg More than 1,000 roles will be affected, according to the person, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. Displaced workers will be able to apply for other jobs internally, the person added. A representative of San Francisco-based Salesforce declined to comment. It couldn’t be determined which divisions the reductions were focused in. Salesforce had nearly 73,000 workers as of January 2024, when that fiscal year ended. Technology companies have grown more accustomed to regular job reductions after a massive wave of layoffs at the start of 2023. So far this year, Amazon.com Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Meta Platforms Inc. have all moved to trim their corporate workforces. Salesforce, the leading maker of customer management software, has embarked on a hiring spree for salespeople focused on the company’s new AI agent products. 25. White House says Elon Musk serving as a ‘special government employee’ White House says Elon Musk serving as a ‘special government employee’ Republican presidential nominee, former President Donald Trump offers his hand to Elon Musk back stage during a campaign rally at the Butler Farm Show grounds on October 05, 2024 in Butler, Pennsylvania. Anna Moneymaker | Getty Images Elon Musk is serving in the Trump administration as a “special government employee,” according to a White House official. It’s a designation that means Musk, the tech tycoon and fierce Trump ally whom President Donald Trump has launched on a cost-cutting mission across the federal government, is working neither as a volunteer nor a full-time employee. Special government employees are asked to abide by conflict of interest requirements and ethics policies that are typically less onerous than federal employees. As a temporary position, it bypasses some of the disclosure obligations required of full-time roles. A person familiar with the role said that these types of employees can work up to 130 days in a calendar year and that the days can be split up (i.e. Musk can work half a day and that will only count as half a day). Trump had tapped Musk to lead the “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE,) which was formed after Trump renamed the U.S. Digital Service as the U.S. DOGE Service and established DOGE within the Executive Office of the President by executive order on his first day in office. The executive order to reorganize USDS gave DOGE a mandate to “maximize governmental efficiency and productivity,” and DOGE team members can include agency personnel or newly hired temporary staff who, like Musk, are designated as special government employees. Musk’s SpaceX has won billions in government contracts with the federal government, which critics have said is a potential conflict of interest. According to a report by the Congressional Research Service, special government employees are limited in how many days they can work each year, amounting to not “more than 130 days during any ******* of 365 days.” Trump said Monday that Musk’s DOGE would not act without the White House’s approval and that Musk won’t always get his way. “Elon can’t do and won’t do anything without our approval, and we’ll give him the approval where appropriate, where not appropriate, we won’t,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “He reports in … But he does have a good natural instinct.” Musk, the world’s richest man, has been quick to tout what he said is the political upside of cutting government spending, writing on X, his social media platform, on Monday, that “Nothing polls higher than cutting government spending.” Musk has attacked foreign aid spending, calling the U.S. Agency for International Development a “crazy waste of money” and saying in comments in the early hours of Monday that he and Trump are “in the process” of shutting down the agency. DOGE has already claimed credit for sweeping cuts, including $44.6 million in lease terminations for underutilized buildings, contracts related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility totaling $1 billion, and more than $40 billion to fund foreign aid.
