The same definitely cannot be said for 2025 – not, at least, as things look right now. Whether it’s the return of long dormant series, the first follow-up to a well-received title, or another entry in a series that’s been on a roll as of late, there’s a lot to look forward to in 2025; so much so that even the five esteemed games on our shortlist feel like they only cover a small piece of it.” Source link #Nintendo #Doubles #Switch #Releases Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  3. USPS says it will resume accepting inbound packages from China, Hong Kong USPS says it will resume accepting inbound packages from China, Hong Kong U.S. Postal Service (USPS) trucks are parked at a post office on August 23, 2024 in Los Angeles, California. Mario Tama | Getty Images The U.S. Postal Service said Wednesday it will resume accepting inbound mail and packages from China and Hong Kong, just hours after it suspended service from those regions. “The USPS and Customs and Border Protection are working closely together to implement an efficient collection mechanism for the new China tariffs to ensure the least disruption to package delivery,” the agency wrote in a notice posted to its website. The USPS announced late Tuesday it would stop accepting parcels from China and Hong Kong Posts “until further notice.” The move came after President Donald Trump on Saturday imposed an additional 10% tax on ******** goods, as part of sweeping new tariffs on the country’s top three trading partners. Trump on Monday agreed to hold off on imposing 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico for 30 days. As part of the tariffs, Trump also closed a nearly century-old trade loophole, called “de minimis,” which allows exporters to ship packages worth less than $800 in to the U.S. duty-free. 4. Americans could face higher prices on Shein and Temu. Here’s why – National Americans could face higher prices on Shein and Temu. Here’s why – National Americans are likely to pay more for products from popular ******** e-commerce platforms like Shein and Temu as the U.S. Postal Service said it would stop accepting parcels from China and Hong Kong. The move was announced Tuesday, coming after the U.S. imposed an additional 10% tariff on ******** goods and ended a customs exception that allowed small value parcels to enter the U.S. without paying tax. Canada and Mexico managed to negotiate a month-long reprieve from 25% tariffs threatened by U.S. President Donald Trump. It will likely impact online shopping destinations like Shein and Temu, popular with younger shoppers in the U.S. for cheap clothing and other products, usually shipped directly from China. Cheap, direct postal service helps these companies keep costs low, as did the “de minimis” exemption that previously allowed shipments to go tax-free if their value is under $800. Story continues below advertisement The temporary suspension by USPS is likely to delay shipments and could mean higher prices in the long term. What exactly did the USPS announce? The U.S. Postal Service said in a notice that it would temporarily stop accepting inbound parcels from the China and Hong Kong Posts until further notice. Letters and flats — mail that measures up to 15 inches (38 centimeters) long or 3/4 inches (1.9 centimeters) thick — are not affected. 2:58 China hits back at Trump with counter tariffs on select U.S. imports The USPS did not state a reason in a brief announcement, but the suspension came after Trump closed the “de minimis” customs exemption this week that allowed shoppers and importers to avoid duties on packages worth below $800. Story continues below advertisement The exemption was removed as part of an executive order to levy a 10% tariff on ******** goods. Get breaking National news For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen. U.S. Customs and Border Protection previously stated that it processes an average of over four million “de minimis” imports each week. What is the impact and who is most affected? Consumers and companies alike will no longer be able to send parcels to the U.S. from Hong Kong or China. This move is likely to impact ******** e-commerce firms like Shein and Temu, although Shein is likely to be more affected, according to Jacob Cooke, CEO of e-commerce marketing agency WPIC Marketing + Technologies. Both companies have significant market share in the U.S. “Compared to Temu, Shein relies more heavily on USPS for direct-to-consumer shipping from China, and without this channel, it will have to rely more on private carriers,” said Cooke. Story continues below advertisement “That will increase logistics costs, which along with the recent scrapping of the de minimis exemption for most products from China, could erode its price advantage.” Trending Now Should Canada ban X and Tesla? Why calls are growing Canada seeks new trade deals amid Trump tariff threats, inks Ecuador pact 3:08 Popular e-commerce app Temu sparks privacy concerns Cooke said Temu operates on a semi-consignment model and often ships bulk orders to the U.S. before fulfilling orders domestically. “Temu’s model of sourcing low-cost goods should also enable the platform to absorb higher logistics costs and remain price competitive,” he said. Shein and Temu did not immediately comment. ******** Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China would take “necessary measures” to protect its companies, and urged the U.S. to “stop politicizing economic and trade issues and using them as a tool, and to stop unreasonably suppressing ******** companies.” 1:54 Tech Talk: U.S. targets Shein and Temu & hard drive failure What are possible ways for companies to work around the issue? It is unclear how long the USPS suspension will last, but the effort to crack down on the de minimis excemption seems like a longer-term shift in policy, Cooke said. Story continues below advertisement “Shein and Temu will simply need to rely more on private carriers as a workaround to the USPS suspension,” he said. In the long term, Shein could accelerate its warehouse expansion in the U.S., while Temu can double down on its semi-consignment model. By shipping in bulk to the U.S. and fulfilling orders domestically, logistics cost can be reduced, Cooke said. “Shipping in bulk to the U.S. and fulfilling domestically can reduce logistics costs, but for Shein, this poses a longer-term disruption to their business model which has depended on rapidly developing new SKUs and shipping them directly to consumers,” Cooke said. 5. Nearly 50 years later, this Atari classic is back with a twist Nearly 50 years later, this Atari classic is back with a twist Breakout Beyond is a new, re-imagined version of the Atari classic Breakout, brought to life by Choice Provisions and given an interesting twist. Your goal is still to break all the bricks on screen, but now you’re approaching levels from the side instead of the bottom of the screen. You might recognize Choice Provisions from the BIT.TRIP series of rhythm games. Light trails behind the ball and bricks shatter with stylistic flashes, all accompanied by an electro-synth soundtrack that brings back memories of Geometry Wars. The game will launch with 72 different levels as well as an “endless” mode that features an online leaderboard. You can also play two-player coop with friends. Breakout Beyond – Announcement Trailer Another twist is the addition of special bricks. These might trigger a huge explosion that takes out the blocks around it, or you might find yourself equipped with a limited-time cannon that chews through blocks like they’re made of paper. You can also earn a barrier that will keep your ball in play. Building up combos not only earns a higher score, but it also turns the on-screen effects into a lightshow. Breakout Beyond was planned for launch in 2020 on the ill-fated Intellivision Amico, but now you can play it on a console that is actually available for purchase. The game launches this year for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series S|X, Nintendo Switch, and — unsurprisingly — the Atari VCS. Please enable Javascript to view this content Unfortunately, we don’t have a set release window or an idea of price. You can wishlist Breakout Beyond on Steam and be notified when it releases, and here’s even better news: even an old computer can handle this with ease. The system requirements are minimal, despite the bombastic graphics. Source link #years #Atari #classic #twist Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

She uses the ******** online marketplace to buy crafting supplies for her purse-making hobby. “You can get purse detailing and hardware for cents and pennies,” said Armacost, who is 24 and lives in New York. Learn more. Donald Trump’s 10% tariff on China-made goods sold to the US, which went into effect early on Tuesday morning, might change her shopping habits. On top of this, the US Postal Service has suspended incoming parcels from China and Hong Kong until further notice without explanation. The tariff closes off a trade loophole that allowed fast-fashion companies such as Temu and Shein to ship packages under $800 into the US duty-free; this loophole, called “de minimus” has been criticized by both political parties in recent years. On Tuesday, Reuters reported that Shein and Temu are now likely to raise prices, as is Amazon’s Haul, a new e-commerce app that imports products from China-based sellers. Shoppers are concerned the tariff will get in the way of their retail therapy. “Trying to get that last Temu order in before Trump puts another tariff on China,” Armacost, who works in consulting and also makes comedy videos on TikTok, captioned a post on Monday that shows her frantically typing on a computer, hacker movie-style. It was mostly a joke, but she has friends who made one final Temu run. “My friend Piper got a ton of apartment stuff during a last-minute tariff haul,” she said. Vivi Armacost has friends who made a final Temu run. Photograph: Tiktok user @viviarmacost Temu – which surpassed Amazon as the most-downloaded shopping app in 2023 – and Shein are beloved by the overly trendy and the obsessively thrifty. While Shein is known primarily for clothing, Temu also sells makeup, home goods and decor. These products are cheap – just over $4 for a pair of women’s sneakers on Temu, or $1.45 for bracelet on Temu – but of dubious quality. Inevitably, many end up in landfills. “A lot of the stuff comes actually way smaller than you expect,” Armacost said. “I bought a desk lamp, except it can fit in my hands.” In the months before Trump took office, shoppers urged each other to stock up on Temu and Shein, in case the new administration followed through on its promise to tax US trade partners. “Kinda feeling emo bc this may be the last good ****** Friday for a while because of the tariffs,” one TikTok user wrote in a clip. “Better collect your ‘vintage Shein’ because they will probably go for $100 next year.’” Two days after the election, the fashion writer Amy Odell warned readers of price hikes in a post to her BackRow Substack titled: “Trump Won. So Shop Now.” Susan Scafidi, a lawyer and founder of Fordham’s Fashion Law Institute, told Odell: “Everything’s going to be more expensive, which is a little crazy when you realize that a lot of the Trump appeal was with regard to the economy.” Could the tariff kill fast fashion, an industry defined by wasteful over-consumption, as we know it? No, says Margaret Bishop, a textile and apparel specialist and professor at New York’s Parsons School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology. “If anything, I think these tariffs will strengthen fast fashion’s hold on customers,” she said. “If everything costs more, particularly food, transportation and housing, they’re going to have to cut back somewhere. “Americans have a real hunger for new fashion, so they will trade down to be able to continue to buy things. If a $1 pack of T-shirts at Temu becomes $2 a pack, that’s still cheaper than spending $20 for a couple of T-shirts that are better made,” she continued. Sheng Lu, a professor of fashion and apparel studies at the University of Delaware, agreed that tariffs would not “fundamentally shift” Americans’ love of a good, if sketchy, deal. While small businesses will bear most of the pain from tariffs – due to supply chain snarls or the fact that Americans won’t be able to spend as much – larger corporations such as Shein and Temu tend to absorb costs. “These companies are resourceful,” Lu said. “My more immediate concern is that small and medium-sized enterprises won’t survive, or will face significant challenges.” In 2023, a US congressional report alleged that there was an “extremely high risk” that Temu used forced labor in its supply chain, and that both Shein and Temu evaded US human rights reviews. (Shein denied these claims at the time, while Temu did not comment on the report.) A recent report from the Swiss advocacy group Public Eye found that some Shein workers endure 75-hour work weeks. (Shein told the BBC it was “working hard” to address the issues raised in the report.) The fast-fashion industry is also synonymous with high carbon emissions and pollution. Lu fears that tariffs will exacerbate these issues. “If they have to pay more on tariff duties but at the same time make their prices competitive, that’s not good news for workers or the environmental impact, because companies will have more incentive to cut corners,” he said. In the EU, the European Commission moved on Wednesday to tighten checks on goods sold by online retailers such as Shein and Temu, amid fears that “dangerous products” were flooding the market and that local competitors were losing out to competitors selling unsafe or counterfeit products. Armacost knows that these e-commerce giants represent the worst of Americans’ desire for excess. “But also, at the same time, spending does stimulate the economy,” she said. “In response to the idea that it’s a good thing if people stop ordering so much random stuff, I say: ‘What’s the point of living in a country if I can’t order 100 pieces of junk for $15?’” Source link #order #pieces #junk #Trumps #tariff #hit #fastfashion #devotees #Ecommerce Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

That’s because the cute single-player and multiplayer puzzler Quilts and Cats of Calico is set to launch on mobile on March 11th as it finally emerges from the hinterlands of Steam. The best way to describe Quilts and Cats of Calico is simply by the word cosy. In this 3D puzzler, your job is to create quilts, combining different sections of varying colours and decorating them to achieve high scores. You’ll also need to meet the desires of your metaphorical furry feline overlords who only desire certain quilts. And it’s not just pure gameplay either, as Quilts and Cats of Calico also boast its own story mode where you explore a world of feline worshippers and attend to their whims as an up-and-coming quilter. Qwazy Quilting I think Quilts and Cats of Calico will be a very “love it or hate it” kind of release. Mostly because it is so incessantly adorable I can see it sticking in the craw of some people who’re tired of the cosy gaming trend. 13. Youth activists protest Meta over mental health impacts Youth activists protest Meta over mental health impacts Youth activists have gathered outside Meta’s London offices to protest how the company allegedly exploits younger users for profit at the expense of their mental health, as part of a wider series of actions against the corporate and structural drivers of mental illness. On 4 February 2025, around 20 youth activists with experience of online harms staged a protest outside Meta’s Euston offices – where they unfurled banners reading “Meta profiting from our misery” and held a “die-in” – to draw attention to the ways in which the social media giant’s business model contributes to negative mental health outcomes. Coordinated by Just Treatment – a patient-led health justice organisation – and led by young people aged 18 to 30 with direct lived experience of mental illness (including PTSD, anorexia, anxiety and depression), the action marks the launch of their Mad Youth Organise (MYO) campaign, which is intended to highlight the role corporate power plays in creating the conditions that young people are forced to live under. During the protest outside Meta offices – which forced its employees into using the back entrances – activists highlighted a number of issues to Computer Weekly, including problems around cyber bullying, content that promotes suicide or self-harm being served to vulnerable people, the various forms of dysmorphia caused by the constant barrage of unrealistic body images, and the general lack of safeguarding for young people. All of this, they said, is underpinned by addictive algorithms that are designed to keep people hooked on the platform and the harmful content it’s feeding them. They highlighted how, in the US, Meta is currently being sued in 41 states for allegedly building addictive features into its Instagram and Facebook platforms. Computer Weekly contacted Meta about the protest and the protestors’ claims, but received no response by time of publication. Social media fuelling depression Speaking with Computer Weekly about how she has been personally affected by social media use from a young age, one of the MYO campaigners, Gigi El-Halaby, said it fuelled her descent into anorexia and depression, and ultimately led to a suicide attempt. “I used to spend hours on social media already as a vulnerable teenager, and it was hours of social comparison and really unrealistic beauty standards, and also a lot of harassment, cyber bullying and really harmful content that really fuelled my distress,” she said, adding that in practice, social media is isolating people from one another and undermining their chances of forming the genuine “community and connection” that is needed to improve many young people’s mental health. “I know I’m not alone in this. I know that millions of young people feel the same way, and there’s no accountability at all from the social media firms that are actually driving this crisis.” To help alleviate the pressures placed on young people by Meta and other social media companies, the activists are calling on the *** government to force these companies to pay financial compensation that can be used to fund timely and appropriate mental health care for young people across Britain; where hundreds of thousands of children are stuck on long waiting lists to access vital services. “I want social media platforms to stop pretending like they care about our mental health, and actually start trying to put their money where their mouth is, because the profit margins they hold are so monumental,” said El-Halaby, who described the levy being proposed as a “social media tax” that can help young people get the support they need before they reach a crisis point. However, their calls for financial compensation are not limited to tech firms, and also extend to a range of companies in other sectors they say are negatively shaping the conditions under which young people have to live, including property developers, fossil fuel giants and private healthcare providers. The MYO campaign’s “week of action” (which coincides with Children’s Mental Health Week) will also see the activists target Priory Roehampton, a privately run mental health hospital, over the poor care NHS inpatients receive in comparison with privately paying patients; the Home Builders Federation, a trade association representing private sector homebuilders in England and Wales; and an undisclosed big oil corporation. Breaking monopoly power According to a manifesto published by the group, current conversations around mental health “prioritise personal responsibility and self-management over collective action and system change”, despite the fact that mental illness is largely a “response to the brutal, traumatising and destructive conditions created under capitalism”. Highlighting the collective social experiences of MYO participants and other young people, the manifesto adds that they have grown up under the “suffocating weight” of austerity; are trapped in a cycle of zero-hour contracts; have never had stable access to housing; and are ultimately the generation that will have to live with the consequences of climate change. Regarding big tech specifically, it added that these firms “profit from our suffering, fears and insecurities” by using algorithms that “push us deeper into patterns of consumption and mental dependency”, creating an “immense” mental toll. “AI and algorithms are more than just tools to improve tech giants’ services; they’re a system of psychological manipulation … designed to amplify our desires, keep us hooked, and, most importantly, keep us consuming,” wrote MYO, noting that this model means young people are shown the most “sensational and extreme” content to keep them online and generating revenue for social media firms. “That’s why, to tackle the dangerous impacts of big tech companies, we must focus on breaking the monopoly power they wield.” The MYO campaign has already attracted support from Labour MP Nadia Whittome, who said it’s no wonder that one in five young people have a probable mental disorder when their “lives are getting harder and harder” across the board. “The culprits of the youth mental health crisis are clear: years of austerity, combined with unaccountable corporations exploiting young people for profit, facilitated by government policymaking that focuses on the demands of businesses but fails to meet the needs of young people,” she said. “From property developers to Big Oil companies, these corporations should be paying financial compensation for the harm they are doing. I will be working with my parliamentary colleagues to do this – and take meaningful action to end the crisis our young people are facing.” Speaking with Computer Weekly about the action outside Meta, Emma Hughes, head of organising and campaigns at Just Treatment, also highlighted that the harms being proliferated online by the largely unchecked business models of social media firms is a monopoly issue of unaccountable power. On top of making them pay compensation for the harms caused, she said it would “like to see some government regulation to break up these big tech monopolies, and force them to publish their algorithms so we can have a better understanding [of how they work].” Pointing to the tech oligarchy that has rallied around US president Donald Trump in the wake of his election, Hughes added that “it’s an issue of power – they have so much influence that unless you’re actually tackling the business model and the structures that give them very opaque, unaccountable power, it’s going to be very difficult to regulate them into better behaviour”. She said that while the *** government’s Online Safety Act is helpful in some ways, it fundamentally does not go far enough in tackling the root of the problem, which is the business models of social media and tech firms. Hughes concluded that while the web of corporate interests and economic policies making life difficult for young people are certainly powerful, “strategic, determined” interventions led by those most affected such as the MYO campaign can be effective in producing change. “It’s not going to be an easy overnight win, but you can achieve changes with actually quite small resources,” she said, highlighting a previous campaign that Just Treatment ran in collaboration with families and other grassroots organisations that forced pharmaceutical firm Vertex to lower its cystic fibrosis drug prices after initially trying to increase its charges to the NHS. “We forced that corporation to drop their prices by shaming them and forcing governments to look into it, so there are tools available to challenge corporate power,” said Hughes. 15. Reddit community banned as user spat with Musk intensifies Reddit community banned as user spat with Musk intensifies Tom Gerken Technology reporter Getty Images Reddit has temporarily banned one of its communities – and removed another – after X owner Elon Musk claimed comments made by the site’s users about his employees were breaking the law. The r/WhitePeopleTwitter subreddit, which typically invites people to share funny posts from X, has been banned for 72 hours after some users posted comments calling for violence against members of the Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (Doge). They were responding to reports which suggested some Doge staff have been granted access to sensitive personal information of millions of Americans. Musk – who frequently champions his commitment to free speech – shared a post on X containing the comments, and stated: “they have broken the law”. The subreddit was banned soon afterwards. Reddit declined to comment, but directed the BBC to a public post it had made following the ban. “Over the last few days, we’ve seen an increase in content in several communities that violate Reddit Rules,” the post reads. “Debate and dissent are welcome on Reddit – threats and doxing are not.” Musk has previously criticised legal action being taken against people for making comments online. In 2024, he responded to a video of a person purportedly being arrested for offensive comments online by asking “is this Britain or the Soviet Union?”. Tensions grow Tensions have escalated between the billionaire and Reddit users in recent weeks, after more than 100 subreddits banned users from posting links to X in protest at Musk’s controversial arm gesture at a rally celebrating Donald Trump’s return to office. The billionaire twice extended his arm out straight as he thanked the crowd for “making it happen” – critics, including some historians, said it was a Nazi salute, while Musk dismissed that, saying comparisons with Hitler were “tired” and “dirty tricks”. Getty Images Musk’s gesture drew criticism online The moderators of the r/WhitePeopleTwitter subreddit removed many of the offending comments after they became publicised, but this was not enough to prevent a temporary ban. Any attempt to access the subreddit now displays a message reading that it has been “temporarily banned due to a prevalence of violent content”. “Inciting and glorifying violence or doxing are against Reddit’s platform-wide rules,” it states, adding the subreddit will reopen in 72 hours. Reddit has also taken action to issue a subreddit entitled r/IsElonDeadYet – in which a user posted near-daily that Musk had not passed away – with a permanent ban. Bans and threats The posts came in response to moves being reportedly made by the Doge – which is not a government department, but a team within the administration. The team has been given the job of radically reducing regulation and federal government spending. US media has reported the Trump administration gave Musk’s deputies access to the federal payments system that controls the flow of trillions of dollars in government funds every year. It has led to backlash online with people criticising the decision, and the names of the Doge staff involved being shared publicly. But the action taken by Reddit may not have been solely related to Musk’s comments. On Monday, a prosecutor appointed by Trump said the FBI was investigating the “targeting” of Doge staff. “Our initial review of the evidence presented to us indicates that certain individuals and/or groups have committed acts that appear to violate the law in targeting Doge employees,” said United States Attorney for the District of Columbia Edward Martin. In a letter to Musk he posted on X, Mr Martin said he would “not tolerate threats against Does workers or law-breaking by the disgruntled”. “Any threats, confrontations, or other actions in any way that impact their work may break numerous laws,” he wrote. “We will pursue any and all legal action against anyone who impedes your work or threatens your people.” Source link #Reddit #community #banned #user #spat #Musk #intensifies Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

For Super Bowl, NFL scrapping “End Racism” end zone stencil in favor of “Choose Love” For Super Bowl, NFL scrapping “End Racism” end zone stencil in favor of “Choose Love” New Orleans — The NFL is stenciling “Choose Love” in the back of one of the end zones at the Superdome for the Super Bowl on Sunday in what the league says is an effort to encourage the country after a series of tragedies over the first six weeks of the year. It’s not using “End Racism” for the first time since the NFL began using Super Bowl end zone stencils. “The Super Bowl is often a snapshot in time and the NFL is in a unique position to capture and lift the imagination of the country,” league spokesman Brian McCarthy said. “‘Choose Love’ is appropriate to use as our country has endured in recent weeks wildfires in Southern California, the terrorist attack here in New Orleans, the plane and helicopter ****** near our nation’s capital and the plane ****** in Philadelphia.” “It Takes All of Us” will be stenciled in the other end zone as it’s been since the league began using field stencils in 2020 for the NFL’s Inspire Change initiative. Teams this season have selected “Vote,” “End Racism,” “Stop Hate,” or “Choose Love” for the other end zone. The two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs used “Choose Love” in the AFC title game against Buffalo. The Philadelphia Eagles selected “End Racism” in the NFC championship game. President Trump is scheduled to attend the game when the Chiefs seek to become the first team in NFL history to three-peat during the Super Bowl era. Two people familiar with the league’s thinking shot down the notion that Mr. Trump’s presence is the reason “End Racism” isn’t being stenciled in an end zone. Both people spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the topic. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday he doesn’t believe the league’s policies to promote diversity are in conflict with the Trump administration’s efforts to ban diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the federal government. The NFL has rules in place that require teams to interview diverse candidates for key coaching and front office positions as part of the “Rooney Rule” that’s been in place for more than two decades. Several NFL owners contributed to the Trump campaign or conservative causes during the 2024 election cycle. “Our owners participate in everything that we do,” Goodell said. “Our policies have been designed to be well within the law, well within the practice. There are no quotas in our system. This is about opening that funnel and bringing the best talent into the NFL. “We also believe we are doing the right thing for the NFL and our policies are consistent with the current administration as well as the last administration.” More Source link #Super #Bowl #NFL #scrapping #Racism #zone #stencil #favor #Choose #Love Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  17. Name those who failed in Nottingham killer’s care, families say Name those who failed in Nottingham killer’s care, families say Laura Hammond BBC News, Nottingham PA Media The victims’ families spoke in London after the release of a major review into the NHS on Wednesday The families of the victims of the Nottingham attacks have called for those involved in the failings of triple killer Valdo Calocane’s care to be named individually. Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both 19, and Ian Coates, 65, were stabbed to death by Calocane, who has paranoid schizophrenia, on 13 June 2023. An independent review into his NHS treatment and care, published on Wednesday, said it showed the “system got it wrong” and identified a catalogue of errors. At a press conference in London, the victims’ families called for greater accountability for those involved. The families say they will “not stop until we get justice” The review, by Theemis Consulting, looked into the treatment given to Calocane by Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust before the killings, as well as the interactions the NHS had with other agencies involved in his care. The report found a number of failings, including his risk not being “fully understood, managed, documented or communicated”, and identified missed opportunities to take more assertive action towards Calocane’s care. NHS England said it was “clear the system got it wrong” and apologised to the victims’ families “on behalf of the NHS and the organisations involved”. Similarly, Ifti Majid, chief executive of the Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, apologised and said it would accept the report “in its entirety”. PA Media Neil Hudgell, solicitor for the families, and Emma Webber called for greater accountability But Emma Webber, mother of Barnaby Webber, said: “Names must be named.” She added the professional implications of being named were no comparison to the loss of a family member. Dr Sanjoy Kumar, the father of Grace O’Malley-Kumar, said he would be writing to Health Secretary Wes Streeting to order the mental health trust to hold individual clinicians “responsible”. “We demand accountability,” he added. Supplied Ian Coates, Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar died on 13 June 2023 Since the publication of the report, which Mrs Webber described as a “horror show”, the government repeated its commitment to an inquiry into the attacks, with work ongoing to establish its scope. But Neil Hudgell, solicitor for the families, said: “We want it to have teeth, and be judge-led.” Mrs Webber called on the government to make the inquiry statutory, and pleaded for ministers to “make this trauma stop, and make our fight stop now”. She added: “I do think it’s time now that we get the opportunity to meet with the prime minister.” Nottinghamshire Police Calocane was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia before the attacks Calocane was sentenced to a hospital order in January 2024 after pleading guilty to three counts of manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility, and three counts of attempted ******* after using Mr Coates’s van to drive into three pedestrians. Speaking outside Nottingham Crown Court following sentencing, Mrs Webber said “true justice has not been served”, adding the families had been “let down” by the police and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). In May last year, judges ruled Calocane’s sentence was not unduly lenient. Source link #failed #Nottingham #killers #care #families Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  18. MPs to scrutinise use of artificial intelligence in the finance sector MPs to scrutinise use of artificial intelligence in the finance sector The Parliamentary Treasury Committee has called on consumers, finance firms and IT suppliers to provide evidence to support an inquiry into the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the finance sector. AI is used widely in the finance sector where automation is rife. This includes chatbots supporting customers and even the use of AI in making trading decisions. Banks and other finance firms have the money, IT skills and business case to increase the use of AI. In fact, the Bank of England figures recently revealed that 75% of finance firms are already using AI, with a further 10% planning to use it over the next three years. But left to their own devices, banks will push the technology to breaking point, according to one senior IT professional in the *** finance sector, who said: “With AI, they have got their teeth into it, and they’re thinking, ‘We can automate loads of stuff and save a load of money with branches, head offices or staff until it goes wrong’.” Wide adoption The Treasury Committee inquiry goes beyond banks and includes the wider finance sector such as insurance and pensions. There is a balance that must be reached because AI has government support, but there are great risks associated with its use in the finance sector. The committee of MPs may explore how AI is currently used by finance firms and what opportunities it brings for innovation, could consider the potential impact on employment in the sector, and could review how AI might “jeopardise financial stability”. It might also question whether there are increased cyber security risks. MP Meg Hillier, Labour (Co-op) MP for Hackney South and Shoreditch, who chairs the committee, said that governments have been clear that they intend to support the increased use of AI in the economy. “My committee wants to understand what that will look like for the financial services sector and how the [finance sector] might change in the coming years as that transformation gathers pace,” she said. “It’s critically important the [finance sector] can capitalise on innovations in AI and continue to be a world leader in finance,” she added, but warned of the risks associated with unfettered use of AI. “We must also be mindful of ensuring there are adequate safeguards in place to mitigate the associated risks, particularly for customers.” The call for evidence, which is open until March 17, asks: “How can government and financial regulators strike the right balance between seizing the opportunities of AI, but at the same time protecting consumers and mitigating against any threats to financial stability?” The human cost of increased take-up of AI includes huge job cuts as an increasing range of human roles are automated, resulting in job losses and less human contact for consumers in their everyday banking. A recent Bloomberg Intelligence report predicts 200,000 middle and back-office jobs will be lost to AI, while *** banks expand the use of technology such as AI to replace people and branches on the high street. There are also risks that automation can increase the likelihood of another financial ****** as automated systems accelerate trading. The financial services regulator is working with stakeholders to help ensure that AI is taken up in a way that benefits the industry, but negates risks. During an international financial conference in Hong Kong, deputy governor of financial stability at the Bank of England Sarah Breeden said that regulation must stay ahead of AI take-up. To this end, the regulator plans a consortium where private sector finance organisations and AI experts can provide knowledge on the technology’s benefits to the sector and to manage risk. Trump’s suggestion came at a White House news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who smiled several times as the president detailed a plan to build new settlements for Palestinians outside the Gaza Strip, and for the U.S. to take “ownership” in redeveloping the war-torn territory into “the Riviera of the Middle East.” “The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too,” Trump said. “We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site, level the site, and get rid of the destroyed buildings, level it out, create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs.” Story continues below advertisement The comments came amid a fragile ceasefire between Israel and ******, during which the militant group has been turning over hostages in exchange for the release of prisoners held by Israel. 20. Opera Air Browser With Mindfulness Exercises and Boosts Feature Launched for Windows, Mac Opera Air Browser With Mindfulness Exercises and Boosts Feature Launched for Windows, Mac Opera Air was launched on Tuesday for Windows and macOS as the company’s first web browser built around the concept of mindfulness. Currently in early access, it incorporates features such as breathing exercises, binaural beats, and inspiring quotes to enhance the user’s well-being as they browse the web. Opera says its new mindfulness-based web browser sports a minimalist Scandinavian design and frosted glass user interface (UI) which can adapt to the background of the website displayed on the screen. Opera Air Browser Features Keeping mindfulness at its centre, the Opera Air browser comes with a feature called Take a Break. As the name suggests, it encourages users to take a break between browsing sessions to recharge and do exercises. It is located in the sidebar, which when selected, takes the user to different exercises, including a handful dedicated to breathing, meditation, and neck. Their duration depends on the exercise type, taking from as little as three minutes to a full 15 minutes. Alternatively, it can also be accessed by using Ctrl + K or Cmd + K keyboard shortcuts for Windows and macOS, respectively. Opera Air’s Take a Break Feature Photo Credit: Opera Meanwhile, it also has what Opera calls a Full Body Scan. The company says it is a guided routine which enables them to focus on different parts of the body and “deeply connect mind and body”. All of the mindfulness exercises are guided by real voice actors and users can select between Alex or Emma. Although it can be toggled manually, they can also choose to set break reminders and their frequency. Another key feature in Opera Air is Boosts. It leverages binaural beats, an auditory technique which plays two slightly different frequencies in each ear so that the brain may perceive a third frequency, inducing different mental states such as focus or relaxation. The binaural beats are accompanied by a music track and an ambient sound, and users can adjust their levels and frequencies as per their preference with the help of sliders. Of course, the feature requires headphones to work, following which Boosts such as Creativity Boost, Energised Focus, or Deep Relaxation may be induced. This feature has a default ******* of 30 minutes but can be adjusted between 15 minutes to an unlimited duration. It is also accessible in the sidebar of the Opera Air browser. Lastly, the company has also improved the Speed Dial feature by adding a Quote of the day. Mindful quotes will appear at the bottom on the browser’s main screen. Opera says quotes can be shuffled through, customised, and even deactivated. For the latest tech news and reviews, follow Gadgets 360 on X, Facebook, WhatsApp, Threads and Google News. JPMorgan upgrades this asset management stock, calls for a 20% gain ahead JPMorgan upgrades this asset management stock, calls for a 20% gain ahead Janus Henderson is becoming a standout name in the asset management business, according to JPMorgan. Analyst Kenneth Worthington upgraded the stock to overweight from neutral following the company’s fourth-quarter earnings release late last month. Worthington also raised his price target on the stock to $53 from $44, indicating 20.5% upside potential from Tuesday’s close. Janus Henderson on Jan. 31 posted fourth-quarter earnings and revenue that beat expectations, driven in part by its fixed in come business. Worthington cited his confidence in CEO Ali Dibadj’s initiatives to upgrade and refocus the firm to increase its market share and take advantage of its strong balance sheet as catalysts for the upgrade. “We see Janus as the turnaround story in traditional asset management,” Worthington wrote in a note. “The difference between Janus and peers that are pursuing a similar strategy is that Janus’s core business has better performance and [management] is being more innovative around growth priorities,” Worthington added. The firm is on a path for sustainable organic growth, and its recent results show that it is able to win more businesses, the analyst noted. “While we still envision a ******* of heightened flows risk and a long road ahead in the transformation journey, we acknowledge the early progress in the strategic initiatives and we have increasing confidence in the management team’s ability for continued successful execution,” Worthington said. 22. Gold hits record high as US-China trade war stokes haven demand Gold hits record high as US-China trade war stokes haven demand Gold rose to a record high, after advancing by almost 1 per cent in the previous session, as the opening salvos of the US-China trade war stoked haven demand. Bullion reached an all-time peak above $US2861 ($4556.) an ounce on Wednesday. That came after President Donald Trump hit ******** imports with a 10 per cent tariff the day before, prompting a swift but more targeted retaliation from Beijing. The response from China was relatively muted compared to Trump’s first term, when Beijing hit back with tariffs that were almost on par with the US, but there’s still plenty of trepidation about the impact on the world’s two biggest economies. Markets are also waiting to see if there are any ripple effects for US monetary policy if tariffs reignite inflation. Adding to the uncertain outlook, Trump proposed that the US take over the Gaza Strip and assume responsibility for reconstructing the war-torn territory, during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The precious metal should benefit from increasing unease about what lies ahead, although it may lose some of its lustre if interest rates stay high. A gauge of the dollar fell, extending losses following a US jobs report on Tuesday that pointed to a gradual slowdown in the labor market. A weaker greenback makes commodities like gold cheaper for most buyers. “Who doesn’t like a safe-haven in this scenario?,” said Charu Chanana, a strategist at Saxo Capital Markets Pte.. “No good news on US-China talks and more geopolitical angst with the Gaza news would continue to provide a further boost to gold, irrespective of where the US dollar goes.” Spot gold rose 0.7 per cent to $US2861.22 ($4556) an ounce as of 6:29 a.m. in London. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was down 0.1 per cent, after a 0.7 per cent loss on Tuesday. Silver and platinum climbed, while palladium dropped. Trade-war fears had jolted precious-metals markets even before Trump went ahead with the tariffs on China. US prices of gold and silver have surged above international benchmarks in recent weeks, prompting dealers and traders to rush huge volumes of the metals into America before any tariffs take effect. The chaos also led to a spike in lease rates for gold and silver – the return that holders of metal in London’s vaults can get by loaning it out on a short-term basis. 23. Adafruit’s Fruit Jam is a Raspberry Pi Pico 2 powered, credit card sized computer Adafruit’s Fruit Jam is a Raspberry Pi Pico 2 powered, credit card sized computer One of the coolest things about the Raspberry Pi is all of the cool third-party boards that get made by the community and professional companies like Adafruit. Today we’re excited to share a cool design put together by the team over at Adafruit featuring the Raspberry Pi Pico 2’s RP2350B microprocessor. In a blog post uploaded earlier this week, we get a close look at a new board design called the Fruit Jam RP2350B. This mini credit card-sized computer was inspired by another board known as the IchigoJam. This board is Raspberry Pi Pico compatible and proved to be a handy little device with plenty of wiggle room for modification. The two boards are similar in that they are Pico-powered but Adafruit’s Fruit Jam board incorporates everything you need in one board to turn it into a functional tiny 8-bit style computer. The IchigoJam is a $15 pocket sized computer that originally was designed to work with the NXP LPC1114F microcontroller but has since been upgraded to support the Raspberry Pi Pico. The IchigoJam offers composite video output support and can use PS/2 keyboards with a USB adapter. This got Adafruit thinking that the board would be fun to recreate with a few additional tweaks to make it a useful tiny computer. (Image credit: Adafruit) The Fruit Jam design from Adafruit includes quite a bit of hardware to play with including two USB A ports, NeoPixels, several buttons, StemmaQT and even a speaker connection via JST and a 3.5mm audio jack. There are a smattering of GPIO pins, including analog pins and digital (which will also likely feature PWM) You can connect a monitor using a DVI port and use its microSD card slot for storage. The Fruit Jam board is planned to be powered by an RP2350B with 8MB of PSRAM, as well as the default 520KB of SRAM. Onboard storage comes with 16MB of QSPI flash. It’s not confirmed what programming language will be used to program the Fruit Jam but we imagine that CircuitPython will be the first choice. However we know for sure that it includes a USB-C port that will be used for power and for flashing firmware to the board. How you use Fruit Jam, we have to guess that it will follow the 1980s home computer trend of powering on, and being presented with a prompt. Something that CircuitPython lead developer Scott Shawcroft talked about in an episode of our show The Pi Cast back in 2021. For comparison, the IchigoJam is designed to be programmed in BASIC, yes a similar BASIC to what many of us used on hour home computers in 1970s and 80s. If you want to get a closer look at this Raspberry Pi project, you can check out the full blog post shared by Adafruit for more details. 24. Dr. Kayse Shrum expected to resign as OSU President Dr. Kayse Shrum expected to resign as OSU President STILLWATER, Okla. (KFOR) — News 4 has confirmed through two independent sources that Oklahoma State University President Dr. Kayse Shrum is expected to announce her resignation on Wednesday. She has been on the job for less than four years. During her tenure, Dr. Shrum led the way with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and conference realignment, all while bringing new initiatives to the university: the Hamm Institute for American Energy, the Oklahoma Aerospace Institute for Research and Education, the Human Performance and Nutrition Research Institute, and the OSU Student Farm. OSU has also set multiple enrollment records under Dr. Shrum, including the highest undergraduate enrollment, the largest first-time freshman class, and becoming the state’s largest university system. The university also set records for non-residents, Honors College, Spears School of Business, Native American, first-generation, online, and new graduate students. News 4 spoke with several OSU students on Tuesday who say they are in disbelief after hearing about the news. “I hope it’s not true,” Jordan Mondaine, an OSU student said. Students are trying to fathom the fact that Dr. Shrum is apparently stepping down. “It feels a little, well, very kind of sad, to be honest,” said Nathan Wolmack, an OSU student. “It’s just like because she’s been here about as long as I have. I’ve been here as long as she has.” Photo Gallery: Dr. Kayse Shrum begins her tenure as Oklahoma State University President They say it feels like Dr. Shrum had just arrived yesterday, giving her speech about what she was going to do to improve the university. “As a medical student at Oklahoma State University, I would have never imagined this day,” Dr. Shrum said when she was hired. “I’m so honored and humbled by this appointment. OSU has a special place in my heart and I’m thrilled at the opportunity to lead this vibrant university.” Dr. Shrum became the 19th president of OSU in 2021 and is the first woman to lead the university. “It was really cool to see her become the first woman president,” Wolmack said. “It was just like, it was nice. It’s like a big accomplishment for OSU as a whole.” So far, no reason has been revealed as to why Dr. Shrum is resigning. “She always showing support, seeing her always at the football games,” Mondaine said. “She’s great, being in touch with the student base and everything.” Students that News 4 spoke with say they enjoyed their time at OSU while she was president. “Just having her go would feel very strange because like all of a sudden, like, there might be some shakeups, something might change,” Wolmack said. “I would hate to see her go,” Mondaine said. “I’d love to see her stay. And again, I understand things change, but again, we would love if you stayed out here, Dr. Shrum.” News 4 will keep you informed when an official announcement is made. Engineers, designers and other professionals across the Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche brands will use virtual twins to streamline vehicle development. This is intended to enable teams to simulate, test and refine every aspect of vehicle development in a collaborative virtual environment before physical production begins, while ensuring compliance with global regulations and sustainability standards. “We are advancing the development of our next-generation IT system landscape, and the decision to partner with Dassault Systèmes marks an important milestone,” said Hauke Stars, board member at Volkswagen Group for IT. “With consistent data streams and AI [artificial intelligence] solutions built on them, we are creating a true technological leap for our teams in development and factory planning. At the same time, we are sustainably reducing IT costs and accelerating processes by streamlining our system complexity and utilising virtual twins.” Volkswagen Group will rely on four Dassault Systèmes industry solution experiences based on the 3DExperience platform: Global Modular Architecture; Smart, Safe and Connected; Efficient Multi-Energy Platform; and On-Target Vehicle Launch. “After four decades of partnership rooted in innovation and trust, we’re now embarking on the next chapter with Volkswagen Group with the 3DExperience platform at its core,” said Dassault Systèmes CEO Pascal Daloz. “Our AI-powered virtual twins and the strength and resilience of the cloud will unify Volkswagen Group’s hardware and software innovation and unleash the knowledge and know-how to accelerate its software-driven transformation.” Source link #Volkswagen #optimises #vehicle #development #3DExperience Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
