Milei said at a Bloomberg event on January 22, 2026 that “The world should celebrate the arrival of President Trump,”before Donald Trump will star on January 23, 2025 in an eagerly-anticipated online appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos, addressing global elites whose annual gabfest has been consumed by the US president’s days-old second term. (Photo by FABRICE COFFRINI / AFP) (Photo by FABRICE COFFRINI/AFP via Getty Images) Fabrice Coffrini | Afp | Getty Images Argentina will pull out of the World Health Organization (WHO), a presidential spokesperson said on Wednesday, following President Donald Trump’s executive order last month to pull the United States out of the global health group. Trump, who Argentina’s libertarian President Javier Milei considers a close ally, moved to exit the organization on his first day in office on January 20. Milei ordered Argentina’s withdrawal because of “deep differences” regarding the WHO’s management of health issues, notably the COVID-19 pandemic, presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni said, citing Argentina’s months-long lockdown under the previous leftist government. Adorni also cited a “a lack of independence from the political influence of other states.” Trump similarly claimed the global health agency had mishandled the COVID-19 pandemic and other international health crises, and that it required “unfairly onerous” payments from the United States, its biggest funder. 6. Why does Donald Trump want to take over Gaza and could he do it? Why does Donald Trump want to take over Gaza and could he do it? Paul Adams Diplomatic correspondent Watch: Trump says US could ‘take over’ Gaza and rebuild it President Donald Trump’s suggestion the US could “take over” and “own” Gaza, resettling its population in the process, has been met with shock and condemnation. The comments come as a ceasefire is under way between ****** and Israel, and amid questions about Gaza’s post-conflict future. The UN estimates around two thirds of buildings there have been destroyed or damaged after 15 months of fighting. Trump’s vague proposal could signal the largest shift in US policy on the Middle East in decades, upending widespread international consensus on the need for a ************ state – comprised of Gaza and the occupied West Bank – to exist alongside Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the idea was “worth paying attention to” but it has been roundly rejected by Arab nations and some US allies. Why did Donald Trump say this now? If Donald Trump is right about one thing, it is that decades of US diplomacy on Israel and the Palestinians have failed to resolve the conflict. Peace proposals and presidents have come and gone but the problems have festered. ******’s attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 and the war in Gaza it triggered were the hideous results. Trump made his millions as a property developer and, with that hat on, made a perfectly valid observation: if Gaza is to be rebuilt, from scratch in some places, it makes little sense for hundreds of thousands of civilians to be sheltering in the rubble. The task of rebuilding Gaza will be monumental. Unexploded munitions and mountains of debris have to be removed. Water and power lines have to be repaired. Schools, hospitals and shops need to be rebuilt. Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff has said that could take years – and while that goes on, the Palestinians will need to go somewhere. However, rather than exploring ways of keeping them close to home, almost certainly in camps in the central and southern parts of the Gaza Strip, Trump says they should be encouraged to leave – permanently. Trump believes that in their absence, an idyllic, American-owned “Riviera of the Middle East” will rise from the ashes, providing thousands of jobs, opportunities for investment and, ultimately, a place for “the world’s people to live”. Why are Trump’s comments so controversial? Where to begin? Even for a president who spent much of his first term upending US Middle East policy – including moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and recognising Israeli sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights – this was an astonishing proposal. In their wildest imaginations, no US president ever thought that solving the Israel-************ conflict would involve taking over a chunk of ************ territory and evicting its population. To be clear, to do this by force would be a grave violation of international law. Some Palestinians would likely choose to leave Gaza and rebuild their lives elsewhere. Since October 2023, as many as 150,000 already have. But others cannot or will not, either because they lack the financial means to do so or because their attachment to Gaza – part of the land they call Palestine – is simply too strong. Reuters The UN estimates around two thirds of buildings in Gaza have been destroyed or damaged Many Gazans are ancestors of people who fled or were driven from their homes in 1948 during the creation of the state of Israel – a ******* Palestinians call the Nakba, the Arabic word for catastrophe. The thought of another will be too painful for many and they will cling to their reduced lives in what remains of Gaza with a fierce determination. For Palestinians who dream of a state of their own, alongside Israel, the loss of part of it will feel like an amputation. Gaza has been physically separated from the West Bank since 1948. Previous rounds of negotiations, as well as Trump’s 2020 “Vision for Peace”, included plans for tunnels or railways that might link the two. Now Trump is basically telling the Palestinians to give up on Gaza once and for all. While he does not appear to be advocating the forced deportation of civilians – which is against international law – Trump is clearly encouraging Palestinians to leave. ************ officials have already accused Israel of blocking the supply of tens of thousands of caravans which could help Gazans to stay put in less damaged parts of the territory while reconstruction takes place elsewhere. The Arab countries who Trump says should accept as many as 1.8 million Gazan refugees, mainly Egypt and Jordan, have expressed outrage. Both have enough problems of their own without this added burden. What is the current status of Gaza? Gaza was occupied by Egypt for 19 years before it was seized by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War. It is still considered occupied by Israel under international law, which Israel disputes. It says the occupation ended in 2005, when it unilaterally dismantled Jewish settlements and pulled out its military. Around three quarters of UN members recognise Gaza as part of a sovereign state of Palestine, though the US does not. Cut off from the outside world by fences and an Israeli maritime blockade, it has never felt like a truly independent place. Nothing and no one moves in or out without Israel’s permission, and an international airport – opened amid much fanfare in 1998 – was destroyed by Israel in 2001 during the second ************ uprising. Israel and Egypt imposed a blockade on Gaza, citing security reasons, after ****** won ************ elections in 2006 and ejected its rivals from the territory after intense fighting the following year. Long before the latest war, Palestinians had come to regard Gaza as an open prison. Could Trump take over Gaza if he wants to? It goes without saying that the US has no legal claim to the territory and it is not at all clear how Trump intends to impose American rule. As with his bullish claims about US control over Greenland or the Panama Canal, it is not yet clear whether Trump really means it or if the comments represent an opening, outlandish bargaining position ahead of a bruising set of negotiations on Gaza’s future. Various plans have been discussed for the post-war governance of Gaza. In December, the two main ************ factions, ****** and ******, agreed to form a joint committee to oversee its administration – an agreement which has so far come to nothing. At other times, discussions have focused on the creation of an international peacekeeping force, possibly made up of troops from Arab countries. EPA Trump made his Gaza comments during a press conference in Washington on Tuesday Last month, Reuters reported that the UAE, US and Israel had discussed the formation of a temporary administration in Gaza until a reformed ************ Authority (PA), which already has control in parts of the West Bank, was ready to take over. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously publicly insisted that the PA will have no role to play in running post-war Gaza. In a limited sense, American boots are already on the ground. A US security firm has employed around 100 former US special forces to man a vital checkpoint south of Gaza City and screen the vehicles of Palestinians returning to the north for weapons. Egyptian security personnel have also been seen at the same checkpoint. These could be the first, tentative signs of an expanded international – and possibly US-led – presence in Gaza. But that is hardly a US takeover, something that would require a large-scale military intervention in the Middle East – the sort of thing Trump has long told voters he wants to avoid. Could there be implications for the Israel-****** ceasefire? Negotiations on phase two of the two-week-old ceasefire between Israel and ****** have barely begun but it is hard to see how Trump’s bombshell remarks will help to advance them. If ****** feels the end product of this whole process is a depopulated Gaza – devoid not just of ******, but of all Palestinians – it may conclude there is nothing to talk about and hold on to the remaining hostages it took on 7 October 2023. Netanyahu’s critics have accused him of looking for excuses to blow up the negotiations and resume the war. They are bound to conclude that, with these comments, Trump is a willing accomplice. On the other hand, the Israeli prime minister’s right-wing backers have expressed satisfaction with the US takeover plan, potentially reducing the risk of cabinet resignations and making Netanyahu’s immediate political future appear more assured. In that sense, Trump has given Netanyahu a powerful incentive to keep the ceasefire going. Reuters Fighting between Israel and ****** has paused after a ceasefire was agreed but Israeli troops have not fully withdrawn from Gaza yet What did Donald Trump say about the West Bank? Asked whether he agreed the US should recognise Israeli sovereignty over the occupied West Bank, Trump said he had yet to take a position but that he would have an announcement to make in four weeks’ time. That remark has caused alarm among Palestinians, for whom such an announcement would inevitably be seen as another nail in the coffin for a two-state solution. Recognising the legitimacy of Israel’s settlements in the West Bank would be a hugely consequential move. Most of the rest of the world regards them as ******** under international law, although Israel disputes this. During previous rounds of peace talks, negotiators recognised that Israel would get to hold onto large settlement blocs as part of a final agreement, probably in exchange for small chunks of Israeli territory. In 2020, Trump brokered the Abraham Accords, which secured the historic normalisation of relations between Israel and two Arab nations, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain. The UAE signed that agreement on the understanding Israel would not annex parts of the West Bank – an understanding which may now be in jeopardy. 8. Ange Postecoglou: Mathys Tel never rejected Tottenham Ange Postecoglou: Mathys Tel never rejected Tottenham Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has denied reports that Mathys Tel initially rejected the club before his deadline day move to north London. Last week, reports emerged that the 19-year-old forward refused to move to Spurs even after meeting chairman Daniel Levy in Germany. But Tel was pictured flying to London on Monday before completing a transfer deadline-day move from Bayern Munich, joining initially on loan but with Spurs holding a £47.5m option to buy in the summer. When asked about whether Tel rejected Spurs, Postecoglou said: “I think people need to understand that you are talking about a 19-year-old who has to make a major decision for his career and it’s not that he rejected us or rejected anyone else. “I think he just wanted to be comfortable with his decision. I don’t think he wanted to be pushed in a certain direction and it’s credit to him. “I had a conversation with him and it was purely around the football and I think he’ll find a really good place for him here.” Postecoglou has previously said he only wants to sign players committed to the club’s project, despite them currently sitting 14th in the Premier League table. When asked if he felt Tel was committed to Spurs, Postecoglou said: “Yes, 100%. I am more than 100% sure because he took so much time, was so diligent about finding out everything. He had other options so it gave me more confidence that we are getting the right kind of mentality, the right kind of player. “He is very ambitious. He has a great self-belief and confidence. He feels he can reach the top of the game and he has chosen us which is great vindication of what we are doing.” Tel could make his debut as Spurs defend a 1-0 lead against Liverpool at Anfield on Thursday night in the second leg of the Carabao Cup. Postecoglou confirmed Tel and new defensive signing Kevin Danso will be available but key defensive duo Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero remain out. These Analysts Expect The Switch 2 Will Launch For $400 These Analysts Expect The Switch 2 Will Launch For $400 More details on the Switch 2 are set to be revealed in an April livestream, and one of the key selling points–quite literally–will be its official price. With recent geopolitical events and several other economic factors to consider, industry analysts have offered insight into how much the Switch 2 might cost. Speaking to CNBC, MST Financial senior research analyst David Gibson predicted a $400 price point based on Nintendo securing a better supply chain for the console and strong third-party support. Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games Inc. (via IGN) also believes that $400 will be the right price for the Switch 2, and Circana’s analysts Mat Piscatella and Piers Harding-Rolls explained to IGN that they also have that price in their projections. MIDiA’s Rhys Elliot did note that if the Switch 2 is in short supply at launch–something Nintendo is aiming to avoid–the price could start at $500. Manufacturing costs could also play a role in the Switch 2 having a high launch price, as Nintendo’s business currently relies heavily on generating profit from Switch console sales. Overall, Elliot does expect $400 to be the sweet spot for the Switch 2 when it eventually arrives. At $400, the Switch 2 launch price will be considerably higher than the current Switch console’s $300 price tag, while the OLED model retails for $350. At the same time, this does make it more affordable than most handheld gaming PCs, as depending on the model and its configuration, they typically start from around $500 and can be as expensive as $800. The Switch 2 could also be good value for money thanks to backwards compatibility, and with games like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends Z-A sharing the same 2025 launch window, analysts are predicting that it’ll be a big seller for Nintendo this year. 10. Spurs defender Spence backs himself against Salah Spurs defender Spence backs himself against Salah Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence is confident of stopping Mohamed Salah from scoring as Spurs take a 1-0 lead into the second leg of their League Cup semi-final at Liverpool. The 24-year-old Spence has found his stride in Ange Postecoglou’s injury-hit squad over the past two months. He helped keep the holders at bay in January’s first-leg win and now aims to help his side reach the final on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT). Tottenham have suffered repeated blows to their backline with Radu Dragusin likely out for the season due to an ACL injury, while defenders Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie and Micky van de Ven are also sidelined. “I back myself against anyone. (Salah) is a great player and he is in good form but you have just got to nullify what he’s good at really,” Spence told reporters on Tuesday. Salah, 32, leads the Premier League top scorer list with 21 goals, two ahead of Manchester City’s Erling Haaland. Spurs were left with one win in 11 league games before bouncing back in the Premier League with a vital 2-0 win at Brentford on Sunday. Pressure is mounting on Postecoglou, with the north London side sitting 14th in the league standings. “It’s been difficult but we fight for the manager, we fight for the club and you know, we all believe in what he wants to do,” Spence added. Spence said confidence would be key to turning Spurs’s fortunes around. “We have got to be confident and we have got to be ready to fight and hopefully we make it to the final.” Meanwhile, Liverpool have revealed Liverpool right back Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss the clash because of an injury sustained at the weekend. Alexander-Arnold came off in the 70th minute of the 2-0 win at Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday because of a suspected thigh injury. “He is going to miss the game tomorrow,” Liverpool manager Arne Slot said Wednesday, “and we have to see if he is able to play on Sunday.” Liverpool play Plymouth in the FA Cup on Sunday before a Merseyside derby at Everton in the Premier League next Wednesday. In the other semi-final, Newcastle hold a 2-0 advantage over in-form Arsenal. They will meet at St James’s Park after the Gunners were stunned by goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon in the first leg in London. See list In the Jackson area, two restaurants received a failing health inspection grade in January, according to the Mississippi State Department of Health. As of Feb. 5, both facilities had conducted follow-up inspections and had rectified the failing grade. Below are the restaurants and food service facilities in District V, including Hinds, Madison and Rankin counties, that received a failing grade of “C.” Madison County Rib Daddy’s BBQ, located at 1428 West Peace St. in Canton, failed a permit health inspection on Jan. 14. The inspection notes a lack of a certified manager and a lack of adequate hand washing facilities. On Feb. 3, the restaurant passed a follow-up inspection and earned a B rating. Before this inspection, Rib Daddy’s BBQ had received one other failing grade in Nov. 2023, also for a lack of adequate hand washing facilities. This 2023 failing grade was then rectified the next week during a follow-up inspection. Rankin County Waffle House, located at 5452 Highway 25 in Flowood, received a failing grade during a scheduled health inspection on Jan. 13. The inspection notes a lack of a certified manager. On Jan. 22, the restaurant passed a corrective follow-up inspection and earned a B rating. Before this failing grade, this Waffle House location had failed three other inspections since 2008, all of which were rectified during follow-up inspections. See the scores: NAEP 2024 Report Card shows MS, rest of US not up to pre-pandemic levels Health inspection grading system The MSDH grades health inspections on an A, B and C scale, with C considered a failing grade. The MSDH website states the following regarding the grading scale: A rating: “The facility inspection found no critical violations. Critical violations of the state Food Code are those more likely to lead to food contamination, illness, or other health risk.” B rating: “Critical violations were found, but corrected under the supervision of the inspecting environmentalist. No further corrective actions are required.” C rating: “Critical violations were found, but some or all were not corrected during the inspection. The facility will be re-inspected, and all violations must be corrected in a time ******* not to exceed 10 days. The re-inspection date is posted on the graded report. If violations are not corrected in the specified time, steps are taken to suspend the facility’s permit to operate. A grade of C is also given if critical violations are repeated from the last inspection, even if they were corrected at that time.” Craving King Cake? 13. Apex Legends Season 24 Kicks Off With Big Buffs To Weapons And A Quicker Time-To-Kill Apex Legends Season 24 Kicks Off With Big Buffs To Weapons And A Quicker Time-To-Kill Apex Legends Season 24 kicks off on February 11, one week after the game’s sixth birthday. The new season doesn’t add a new playable legend, map, weapon, or support item, but does make some major changes to the Assault class to make it more lethal, buffs every single firearm, nerfs armor, and introduces Arsenals–new kiosk-like contraptions on every map that can build the gun and attachments you want to make it easier for players to acquire their preferred loadout. These additions all seem to be in service of making the time-to-kill in Apex Legends substantially shorter. I’ll reserve full judgment for the start of the season, but I’m not a huge fan of that direction. A big part of why I like Apex Legends is because the time-to-kill is much slower than other competitive shooters, like Call of Duty or PUBG. In Apex Legends, you have to pump quite a few shots into an opponent to put them out of the fight–it’s very forgiving, especially if you’ve been playing the game for years and know how to best rotate around each map to quickly move between cover and heal on the move. The Respawn team feels confident that changing this formula is the right direction for the game, noting that the faster time-to-kill shouldn’t be too drastic, as these changes will be countered by buffs to healing. It’s a popular strategy in Apex Legends and an ongoing annoyance. By making it easier to finish off your opponent (or for them to finish off you), the hope is that fights wrap up before another team has a chance to come in and third-party. It also sucks to finish up a fight and then find yourself immediately surrounded by another team. “We’re hoping [this season update is] going to bring a little bit more punctuation to those combats, which allows you to reset [and] get ready for those third-parties because everybody’s going to hear that gunfire,” Canavese said. “Fights are going to feel a little bit more lethal. Cover [is] going to be a little bit more important, making the right rotations and not just running out in the middle of a field and then, ‘Oh, I got shot a couple of times, I’ll just run away and heal.’ Everything’s going to be a little bit more dangerous. But it’s going to promote good strategy and good tactics, and playing for the win and [trying] to work with your team and use your abilities to the best that you can so that you can not get blown up immediately.” As part of the plan to make firefights feel more dangerous, the Assault class is getting a major update this season, mirroring what Respawn has done for three of the other four classes so far. Season 24 makes it so Assault legends can more easily carry extra grenades, and they now get both a speed boost and automatically mark targets when they break enemy body shields so that they can close on wounded foes. On top of those changes, both Ash and Ballistic are getting changes to their overall kit and improvements to certain skills. None of the changes sound as impactful as the updates in 2024 that improved the Support class and made drastic shifts to the kits of characters like Lifeline and Loba, but the Assault class is already quite powerful, so it makes sense they’re not getting a huge buff. Following the major update to the Support class, Apex Legends is focusing on the Assault characters. “We’ve been tracking this particular type of class-wide change for the last couple seasons now,” lead legend designer Devan McGuire told me. “We’re at Assault, we’ve done Controller and Recon and Support. …So there’s only really one class left [Skirmisher], so that will at least end that particular dynasty [of updates]. And then we’ll be looking at a different method of making, again, impactful changes that allow certain characters to rise into the spotlights.” In terms of what these changes might look like and what’s in store for Apex Legends in 2025 during its sixth year, tons of new playable legends doesn’t sound like it’s in the cards. “What we’ve seen is that the addition of a new legend hasn’t had as much of an impact on the general feel of the game as it has in the past,” McGuire said. “With the larger roster, you’re not seeing this legend show up as much in every session. You may have certain play styles that just don’t map to the way that that legend plays, and you don’t necessarily want to put that effort into it. But when a change affects a [whole] class, chances are you play someone in that class or you’re playing with someone who’s [using] that class and you do get affected, your gameplay changes and you feel those moments. So it has a different sort of pull.” I miss the excitement surrounding new legends dropping into the game every three months. “We’re trying to make the rank climb feel different, and that is mostly done through changing the core game,” design director Evan Nikolich added. “So when we had six legends or eight legends, adding a new legend had a huge ripple effect. You have 26 legends and [add someone new], it’s not nearly as impactful versus making a systemic wide change. And you’re going to see that across [the game]. This season, we’re doing a lot with weapons. [In] future seasons, we’re touching maps and touching the [battle royale] rules and really evolving what you’re seeing, game to game, frame to frame. What you’re fighting is more impactful than a new legend. When we do add new legends, we want something that really strikes at the core of Apex and ripples out significantly. So [Season 21’s] Alter is fantastic, but she doesn’t have the same impact [as], say, when we added [Season 1’s] Octane.” “Also, players who are new or coming in fresh are more often [the ones] lured by the idea of, ‘Oh, there’s a character I’ve never seen before and there’s abilities I’ve never seen before,'” McGuire said, adding that most players who have been playing Apex Legends for years have their go-to picks already locked and are less likely to be as excited by new faces. There are outliers of course–a friend of mine pretty much only played Pathfinder from day one but since Season 21, he’s been an Alter main. He’s the only one I know, though, and most of the lobbies I’m in see me go up against legends from the first 10 seasons. Respawn hopes to make Apex Legends more fun for new players in 2025. “I think Alter had the unfortunate case of being a character who has a lot of interplay with her team and coming out in a season that had the Solos mode [return] alongside [her],” McGuire said. “There’s very little synergy between the Solos mode and Alter, and I think a lot of people didn’t get a chance to fully experience what she could [add] to the equation. We’re seeing a rise in that now with some of the recent changes, and we’re hoping that that will continue for her moving forward. But yeah, we’re definitely shifting our mentality away from ‘How often can we get a new character in?’ to more of a, ‘What can we do to impact the game experience and make that stay as fresh as [possible] and important to the core of the game?'” Moving away from a strategy of regularly adding new playable legends carries its own risks, of course. The most important–to me, anyway–being the narrative draw that they used to add, curating an experience that felt like a serial TV show that you needed to stay up to date with or pay attention to. New characters were a strong draw for new players and a powerful incentive for longtime players to stay glued into the game’s ecosystem. “The shift [in our strategy] you’re seeing [in 2025] is constantly shifting and evolving,” Nikolich said. “It feels fresh and fun. I think [another] big [goal] is really helping players find the fun. As the game gets older, the player base gets more consolidated, and we love our hardcore audience, but they also [play a lot]–the skill floor has risen so high. As we’re bringing new players in, we really need to do a much better job helping [them] find the fun. Where we get better is that first five minutes. You’re like, ‘Yeah, I’m in. I love this.’ And you [could get] that really well [in the early seasons] where everyone was learning and you [could] have a good match pretty quickly. Now getting [your first] good match as a new player can be tough, and so we’re going to really focus on helping players find their fun over the next several seasons. Both now in [Season 24] and the next several splits.” Apex Legends is available for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC. In Jerusalem, some residents reacted with surprise and enthusiasm to the proposal. I am delighted and excited. And have hope that what he says is true. If America takes over Aza (Gaza), that will really, really be something spectacular, and the Middle East will calm down. I think the Middle East will calm down. I think we’ll be able to have stuff with Saudi Arabia. Most important thing to all of us is to get the hostages back. I think that’s an ideal, because Aza is not helping anybody. The people from Aza, they’re suffering. We’re suffering and the world is suffering. And I think he’s got the right idea. How to implement it is a different story. 15. Nintendo confirms Switch 2 Nintendo Direct time Nintendo confirms Switch 2 Nintendo Direct time Nintendo has confirmed the time for April’s Nintendo Direct focused on Nintendo Switch 2. The Nintendo Switch 2 Nintendo Direct will take place on April 2 at 3 PM CEST / 2 PM GMT / 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET. It’s expected that Nintendo will announce the console’s release date, as well as more information about software coming to the platform. Following years of speculation about its next console, Nintendo finally announced Switch 2 last month. It confirmed that a full reveal was planned for April 2, and also announced plans to hold a series of Switch 2 preview events, giving attendees the chance to try out the console before it’s released. The tour will begin in New York and Paris on April 4, before moving on to various locations in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia over the following two months. The successor to the Nintendo Switch was revealed in a trailer offering a 2-minute look at the new hardware. As suggested by previous leaks, the Switch 2 looks similar to the original console, with the same layout of a screen surrounded by two Joy-**** controllers. However, this time, the controllers appear to connect with a powerful magnet, making it less likely that they will loosen and slide apart from the console over time, something current long-time Switch owners are now experiencing. The Joy-Cons also now appear to be ******, with the color appearing under the sticks, at the side where they connect to the console, and on their removable side grips. The hardware will also come with a longer stand, with a wider tilt which lets it lie almost horizontally. The trailer also gives a very brief glimpse of a new Mario Kart game running on the Switch 2 hardware. At the end of the video, Nintendo confirms that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with the original Switch, saying it “plays both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games”. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said this week that the Switch 2 price will take into account numerous factors, including the trademark affordability of the company’s hardware. He also said Nintendo will put measures in place to prevent resellers from significantly impacting Switch 2 launch supplies. The Traveler intervened at the 11th hour, but the damage was done and a new dark age began. During this time, Guardians rose to become the protectors of our species, and centuries later, a new order was established. That’s where newcomers start in Destiny 2, as you’ll be cast as a freshly resurrected Guardian tasked with keeping humanity safe. That’s easier said than done, as with numerous hostile alien species wandering the solar system, you’ll have your work cut out for you. You can choose to grab a three-item bundle for just $5, six items for $10, and the full bundle for $20. 17. Labour readmits four MPs suspended for rebelling Labour readmits four MPs suspended for rebelling Four MPs suspended by Labour for voting against the government on the two-child benefit cap have been readmitted into the parliamentary party. Labour has restored the whip to Richard Burgon, Ian Byrne, Imran Hussain and Rebecca Long-Bailey, after they spent just over six months as independents. Three others who rebelled in July’s vote – former shadow chancellor John McDonnell, Apsana Begum and Zarah Sultana – remain suspended. All seven MPs are on the left of the party but the three who have not had their suspension lifted have continued to be critical of the government over the past six months. Writing on X, Sultana said she had only found out the news from a media report. The MP for Coventry South added: “Turns out speaking up for Palestine is still a punishable offence.“ Sultana has been a vocal critic of the government’s position on Gaza, saying it had “actively facilitated genocide” in the territory in a social media post last week. She also voted against cutting winter fuel payments for millions of pensioners in September, alongside Begum, Burgon, Byrne and McDonnell. McDonnell, who served as shadow chancellor under Jeremy Corbyn, said he was pleased four of his colleagues had been readmitted but disappointed Sultana and Begum had not. Writing on X, he said he was “relaxed about my own position as I’ve made clear I don’t expect whip back until we know whether police are to charge me following recent ************ demo after which I was interviewed under caution”. McDonnell and Corbyn were both interviewed under caution by the Metropolitan Police, who are investigating whether there was a coordinated effort by organisers to breach conditions imposed on the rally in London. The six-month suspension came after they voted for an SNP proposal to scrap the two-child benefit cap, which prevents almost all parents from claiming Universal Credit or child tax credit for more than two children. Although the government won the vote comfortably, it marked the first Commons rebellion of Sir Keir Starmer’s premiership. 18. Ubisoft Went All In on 1 Assassin’s Creed Shadows Feature That Can Easily Go Sideways Ubisoft Went All In on 1 Assassin’s Creed Shadows Feature That Can Easily Go Sideways In recent years, the gaming industry has been increasingly obsessed with pushing the boundaries of graphic fidelity. Assassin’s Creed Shadows, set to release on March 20th, seems to be following the same trend, with a massive focus on environmental dynamism and realism. The game is set to release on March 20th after a few delays. | Image Credit: Ubisoft However, while the game has been delayed multiple times, allowing Ubisoft to focus on gameplay and polish, it remains to be seen whether all this graphical attention will come at the expense of the core gameplay experience. Assassin’s Creed Shadows will push the limits of technology The developers wanted to push the engine to its limit. | Image Credit: Ubisoft At the heart of Assassin’s Creed Shadows is Ubisoft’s Anvil engine, a piece of technology that has been the backbone of the studio’s games for years. In an interview with GamesBeat, Pierre Fortin, a technical architect at Ubisoft, shared some valuable technical insights into the game. Fortin discussed how Anvil has continuously evolved, allowing the team to push the boundaries of what’s possible in game design. This flexibility allows the implementation of new complex dynamic systems such as crowd simulations, changing weather, and real-time environmental effects like seasons. When discussing crowd simulations and environment specifically, Fortin emphasized how crucial this element is for the Assassin’s Creed experience. He said: For Assassin’s Creed, we want to have the most credible environments. We spend a good chunk of our GPU budget there. This statement shows that developers wanted to make the world of the game feel more alive and responsive. He added that the game’s focus is on realism and dynamism, from how vegetation moves to how characters react to the environment, like wind and seasons. While the attention to the environment is impressive, the developers must not forget that gameplay is king. If this king is missing, everything else will just be nothing. So hopefully, with the two delays, the gameplay has leveled up and is on par, if not better than graphical fidelity. Gameplay must take precedence over graphics Players are waiting to see if the gameplay was given the same attention. | Image Source: Ubisoft While high fidelity is a major draw for modern games (who doesn’t love seeing dynamic weather affecting the environment?), gameplay remains the most crucial aspect of any title. Assassin’s Creed games have long been known for their engaging mechanics, from fluid parkour to stealthy combat, and Shadows needs to uphold that legacy. Let’s be clear: the gameplay shown (after delays) so far in Shadows does indicate improvements. However, these updates have only come after significant backlash from previous showcases of the gameplay. The delays have given the developers the time to refine the game, respond to criticisms, and add new features. Still, Shadows has a lot to prove, especially considering the studio’s rocky track record recently and all the controversies it has faced. While crowd simulations and dynamic environments add depth to the experience, they cannot replace the tight mechanics that have long been the hallmark of the series. In the end, if Ubisoft manages to balance the stunning visuals with solid gameplay mechanics, Shadows could set a new benchmark for open-world games (especially with the new RPG mechanics shown). Only time will tell if this risky approach pays off or if Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be remembered as another visually stunning but ultimately shallow experience. Will Shadows deliver engaging gameplay, or will it fall victim to the trap of prioritizing aesthetics over substance? Share your thoughts with us in the comment section below. 19. Ireland’s Canberra duo set to duel with Scots’ Wallaby Ireland’s Canberra duo set to duel with Scots’ Wallaby Ireland’s *********** duo of Finlay Bealham and Mack Hansen should win their race to be fit for the next leg of the European champions’ bid for a Six Nations ‘three-peat’ — and a date with Scotland’s former Wallaby, Jack Dempsey. The Canberra pair of Bealham and Hansen both sustained leg injuries during Saturday’s 27-22 win over England in Dublin in the opening round of the championship, leaving them in doubt for the clash against Scotland . But Ireland scrum coach John Fogarty offered an encouraging update on Wednesday, saying the pair were set to win their fitness battle, even though two other key figures, Tadhg Furlong and Joe McCarthy, are ruled out for Sunday’s clash in Edinburgh. “They trained just now and it looks positive for both,” Fogarty said. “They took part in the full session. They should be ready, they looked good today. “They’ll be looked at again and there’ll be a medical on Thursday as well.” Both the 26-year-old winger Hansen and 33-year-old prop Bealham, who are teammates in the Irish provincial side Connacht, have become part of the furniture in the Irish squad. Bealham, who’s been playing in Ireland for nearly 15 years, qualified to play in the green because his grandmother is from Enniskillen in Norhern Ireland, while Hansen’s eligibility comes through his Cork-born mother. The visit to Murrayfield could see the pair up against Scotland’s former Wallaby Dempsey, who came off the bench to help them subdue Italy 31-19 last weekend. It’s two years since back-rower Dempsey made his Scotland debut, basically starting a second international career after winning 14 caps for Australia, and the Sydneysider has loved every minute of playing for the country from where his maternal grandfather hails. “I said at the time, to get that, I guess, second chance in the Test arena was a dream come true again, as any young rugby player would say,” he said recently.. “But to fast-forward two years and the bonds I’ve created, some of the friends I’ve made, the experiences while I’ve been over here have been unreal. I’ve loved it all.” There may even have been four Aussies on the field on Sunday if Melburnian Scottish captain Sione Tuipulotu hadn’t been sidelined for the championships with injury. Climb Knight is getting a major new update later this month, including extra minigames Climb Knight is getting a major new update later this month, including extra minigames AppSir’s quirky one-bit platformer Climb Knight is set to receive a major update Coming February 25th it adds three new minigames and an advisor character Although I doubt that everything is as it seems given AppSir’s spooky releases If there’s anything you can say about mobile developer AppSir, it’s that whatever they put out is always worth a look. Whether that’s our glowing review for Spooky Pixel Hero or … their releases always tend to hit the right spot for distinct indie fun. And their latest release Climb Knight is no exception! “But”, you may be about to say, “Didn’t you already cover Climb Knight?” Yes, we did and in fact, we gave it a fairly positive review to boot. But oddly enough it seems the folks at AppSir were genuinely surprised by the reception Climb Knight received. So, in celebration, they’ve announced a major new update coming February 25th completely free! What’s on offer? How about three more one-bit minigames and a strange new advisor inspired by Apple Newton shareware? And knowing AppSir, I’ve no doubt there’s a lot more to this advisor and new gameplay than meets the eye. Climbing up I’d say that, whatever you could say about AppSir, they show that you can have a dedicated indie developer that breaks the mould to prove popular on mobile. While I wouldn’t go so far as to call them the New Blood of smartphones, they’ve definitely got some similarities to the excellent Faith trilogy in the spooky, retro aesthetic of their back catalogue. You can take a look at what we thought of Spooky Pixel Hero but (spoilers) it’s another excellent release that’s well worth playing. And if you want to find out more about what the developer Darius had to say about the reception to Climb Knight, take a gander at his latest blog post. 21. Ex-prosecutor’s trial ends as judge throws out her felony indictment in Ahmaud Arbery death case Ex-prosecutor’s trial ends as judge throws out her felony indictment in Ahmaud Arbery death case BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — A judge Wednesday threw out a felony indictment against a former Georgia prosecutor, ending her trial on charges that she abused her power by trying to protect the men who chased and killed Ahmaud Arbery in 2020. Former District Attorney Jackie Johnson for years denied influencing police who initially decided against making arrests when Arbery was fatally shot in coastal Glynn County, where Johnson then served as the top state prosecutor. She was indicted in September 2021 after state Attorney General Chris Carr ordered an investigation into possible misconduct by Johnson. But prosecutors for Carr’s office struggled to make a case once Johnson’s trial began last week. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. Senior Judge John R. Turner on Monday ordered Johnson acquitted of a misdemeanor count of obstructing police. Turner ruled after prosecutors rested their case, declaring they failed to show “one scintilla of evidence” that Johnson had directed police investigators not to arrest the man who shot Arbery. The judge Wednesday shot down the one remaining charge, a felony accusing Johnson of violating her oath of office. This time he granted a defense challenge that the indictment used to charge Johnson was fatally flawed by technical errors. “Frankly, this is a decision I didn’t want to make,” Turner told attorneys in the courtroom. But he said he felt the defense’s challenge to the indictment against Johnson “needs to be granted.” The judge also expressed sympathy for Arbery’s mother as she sat in the courtroom. “When I think of this situation, I get a very deep sense of sadness,” Turner said. Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, left the courtroom saying she didn’t fault prosecutors for the case’s dismissal. “The evidence was there,” Cooper-Jones told reporters. “We all know that Jackie Johnson played a part in the cover-up of the death of Ahmaud.” Defense attorneys for Johnson asked the judge to dismiss the indictment last week. Turner deferred ruling until Wednesday morning. The judge didn’t explain his reasoning. Defense lawyers had argued the charge accusing Johnson of violating her oath of office contained a fatal technical error: it cited the oath Johnson signed when she was appointed district attorney in 2010 to fill her predecessor’s unfinished term. Defense attorneys said that oath expired when Johnson took a new oath after winning election in 2012. She took it again after being reelected in 2016. Witnesses at the trial included former district attorneys who testified they take a new oath after each four-year election cycle, voiding any prior oaths. Prosecutor John Fowler declined to speak with reporters, deferring questions to the attorney general’s office. A spokesperson for Carr did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment. Three white men chased Arbery through their neighborhood before he was fatally shot. They were later convicted of ******* and hate crimes. Father and son Greg and Travis McMichael armed themselves with guns and used a pickup truck to chase Arbery after spotting the 25-year-old ****** man running in their Georgia neighborhood on Feb. 23, 2020. A neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan joined the pursuit in his own truck and recorded cellphone video of Travis McMichael shooting Arbery at close range with a shotgun. The men told police they suspected Arbery was a burglar and argued that he was shot in self-defense. No one was arrested for more than two months, until cellphone video of the shooting leaked online and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation took over the case from local police. Since Johnson’s trial opened a week ago, prosecutors have tried to build a case that she worked behind the scenes to protect Travis McMichael and his father, a retired investigator from Johnson’s office, even after the district attorney had recused her office from the case. Prosecutors suffered a setback last week when Glynn County Assistant Police Chief Stephanie Oliver testified that she and Johnson have never spoken about Arbery’s case. Oliver was one of two officers named in the 2021 indictment charging Johnson with obstruction by “directing that Travis McMichael should not be placed under arrest.” Prosecutors rested their case Monday without calling Stephan Lowrey, the second officer named in the indictment, to testify. Johnson recused her office from handling Arbery’s shooting. But prosecutors argued Johnson abused her power by recommending the attorney general appoint a neighboring district attorney, George Barnhill, to oversee the case without disclosing that Barnhill had already advised police that the shooting was justified. Barnhill testified Friday that he had advised police independently with no input from Johnson. Johnson was voted out of office in November 2020 and largely blamed her defeat on controversy over Arbery’s killing months earlier. 22. Virtua Fighter 5: R.E.V.O could pick one of the best fighters ever up off the mat Virtua Fighter 5: R.E.V.O could pick one of the best fighters ever up off the mat My favorite feature in Virtua Fighter 5: R.E.V.O., a new PC port of *****’s classic fighting game, isn’t its rollback netcode or 4K visuals. It’s that you can watch other people play matches from the main menu. I don’t know how this works; whether it’s real-time, whether it’s pulling replays, or some other kind of wizardry. I kind of don’t want to know, to be honest. All I know is, whenever I fire up Virtua Fighter 5: R.E.V.O., and I’m deciding what I want to do (do I want to practice some combos with my boy Jean? See if my friends are up for some games? Venture online? Try out somebody new?), I have to actively pull myself away from that screen. You can even watch the matches in full-screen if you really want. It’s a great feature, and I wish every fighting game had it. Every time I watch another match, I learn something new, whether it’s something I want to try myself or something I want to learn how to beat. That’s what makes fighting games great: mastery, watching yourself improve, seeing something new, and saying “I wanna do that.” And it’s right there, front and center, as soon as you boot it up. Players from all over the world, playing Virtua Fighter together. Maybe R.E.V.O. is trying to make up for lost time. VIRTUA FIGHTER 5 R.E.V.O. – Opening Cinematic Virtua Fighter 5: R.E.V.O. is kind of weird; it’s the latest edition of Virtua Fighter 5, a video game that first released on consoles in 2007 and in arcades in Japan in 2006. It’s important that you understand this. Street Fighter IV is widely credited with reviving the fighting game genre after a (relatively) lean decade in 2008. I’ve never liked this story; there were plenty of good fighting games during that time: Guilty Gear, Tekken, Soul Calibur, and yeah, Virtua Fighter, had excellent entries during that *******, among many others. There just wasn’t any Street Fighter. I don’t tell you this because I think you need a history lesson; I’m trying to help you understand how old Virtua Fighter 5 is. When the first version of this game came out, George W. Bush was president, the iPhone was new, and World of Warcraft, which just celebrated its twentieth anniversary, was just over a year and a half old. Virtua Fighter 5 is old, and its design is from a different era. You wouldn’t know it by looking at R.E.VO., which is the PC release of Ultimate Showdown, a visual update to 2012’s Final Showdown. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is in the driver’s seat now, and its Dragon Engine upgrade of Final Showdown is pretty gorgeous, though the in-game audio effects don’t seem to have gotten the same level of love. It feels weird to play a game that looks like this but sounds like it’s playing a twenty-year-old MP3 file when you hit someone. And that voice acting? Good Lord. ***** Okay, so it looks better and the sound effects don’t have the juice when you punch somebody. But under the hood, this is still Virtua Fighter 5, though it’s a little more barebones than previous releases. You’ve got a standard arcade mode, local and online versus modes, an official tournament that’s held every weekend, a basic training mode, and … that’s it. If you’re looking for single-player stuff, it’s not here. You’re here to fight, preferably online, against other people. And that’s where Virtua Fighter 5: R.E.V.O. sings. See, Virtua Fighter 5’s sauce comes from the actual core gameplay, and that’s as good as ever. R.E.V.O. is the first major balance patch Virtua Fighter has seen in thirteen years, making not only major balance changes but actually returning moves characters had in previous iterations of the series. Combine that with new rollback netcode, which has its issues (though it’s worked just fine for me), but is far better than the delay-based netcode that’s appeared in previous games, and this is a big deal. All of this, to be clear, is wonderful, and it makes it easier than ever to play Virtua Fighter with people from all over the world. But what makes Virtua Fighter unique is its gameplay. This is a high-damage game. It moves fast, but it’s far more grounded and realistic than something like Tekken, focusing heavily on real martial arts. There are no demons or fireballs here. It’s also incredibly easy to pick up and play. Virtua Fighter has three buttons: punch, kick, and block. Everything you do comes out of those three buttons or some combination of them. Virtua Fighter’s real depth is in its defensive systems. You can evade most attacks by stepping left, right, or backward and that opens up a world of counter-play in which transitioning from an evade to an offensive move and canceling that into an attack will allow you to attack from the side, giving you a greater advantage. And that’s before you get into character-specific defensive options. ***** Virtua Fighter, at its best, is a dance between your character and your opponent: you’re looking for openings, places you can evade, a predictable moment in their offense while trying to keep your opponent from finding holes in yours. A single interaction can flip a round in Virtua Fighter, and every second is intense as a result. It feels incredible, nearly 20 years later, even if you’re not playing at a high level. And somehow, despite all this time, nothing else plays quite like it. R.E.V.O. is the first time that Virtua Fighter 5 is available on PC and the first time most people will play it. But I’ve rarely seen more excitement for a re-release. Virtua Fighter is something of a forgotten fighting game outside of genre enthusiasts, despite inventing the 3D fighting game and its popularity never fading in Japan. R.E.V.O. represents a new lease on life for a classic series, an opportunity to pick itself up off the mat and prove it still has what it takes to be a contender. With Virtua Fighter 6 on the horizon, R.E.V.O. feels like a statement from *****, a rollout of the red carpet for players old and new alike. Don’t call it a comeback. Virtua Fighter was always here, just a little early or a little late to really catch on. But now, at last, it’s got a chance to remind us why it’s endured at just the right time. Virtua Fighter 5: R.E.V.O. is available now on PC. 23. Trump Proposal Puts Egypt and Jordan in an Impossible Position Trump Proposal Puts Egypt and Jordan in an Impossible Position For decades, the question of whether and how Palestinians might build a state in their homeland has been at the center of Middle East politics — not only for the Palestinians themselves, but also for Arabs around the region, many of whom regard the ************ cause almost as their own. Forcing Palestinians out of their remaining territory, Arabs say, would doom that shared desire for ************ statehood and destabilize the entire region in the process. So it was a nightmare for the Palestinians’ closest Arab neighbors, Egypt and Jordan, and a dream come true for Israel’s far-right-dominated government, when President Trump proposed moving everyone out of the Gaza Strip and onto Egyptian and Jordanian soil, an idea he repeated in a White House news conference with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel on Tuesday. To the two Arab governments, it is not a matter of real estate or refugee camps, but of compromising their own long-held principles, angering their people, risking their own security and stability and perhaps paving the way for West Bank Palestinians to meet the same fate. They have responded with categorical “nos.” That refusal has been backed up by politically independent and opposition figures in Egypt alongside mouthpieces for the country’s authoritarian government, underscoring how the ************ issue unifies even the bitterest political opponents in Egypt. But Mr. Trump has shown little regard for the two countries’ concerns, their sovereignty or the idea of ************ statehood. “They say they’re not going to accept,” Mr. Trump said of Egypt and Jordan during an earlier meeting with Mr. Netanyahu in the Oval Office. “I say they will.” The president may have ways of bending them to his will. Egypt and Jordan are among the top recipients of American military aid worldwide; Mr. Trump has mentioned the funding in recent weeks, though without publicly threatening to pull it over the Gaza issue. Still, analysts say the financial incentives of keeping that aid, which makes up a limited portion of each country’s budget, are minor compared to the two governments’ fears of alienating their populations by appearing complicit in the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and other anxieties. Though the rulers of both countries often brook little dissent on other matters, often using repression to silence internal criticism of their decisions, analysts say they know they cannot afford to ignore public opinion on such a crucial issue. “It’s no joke going up against Trump, particularly for Egypt and Jordan,” said Paul Salem, the vice president for international engagement at the Middle East Institute. But since “this would really be a bridge way too far for much of public opinion,” he added, “there is no other option for an Arab leader. I don’t see what else they could do.” For President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt, the issue is particularly sensitive because he has tried to rally public support for himself at a time when Egyptians are enduring a prolonged economic crisis by painting himself as a champion of the Palestinians. Egypt also sees the possibility of Palestinians settling en masse in Egypt as a serious security threat, government officials, diplomats and analysts say: Officials worry that members of militant groups among forcibly displaced Palestinians could launch attacks at Israel from Egyptian soil, inviting Israeli military retaliation. Jordan, with its far smaller population — many of ************ descent — and heavy dependence on U.S. support, is perhaps even more vulnerable. Far-right Israelis have long talked of Jordan as the place where Palestinians forced out of Gaza and the West Bank should make their home instead of their current territories, raising fears in Jordan that if people from Gaza are forced out, Israel will next drive Palestinians out of the West Bank and annex it. Many, if not all, would likely be forced to go next door to Jordan, destabilizing a country already unsettled by tensions between citizens who are of ************ descent and those who are not, analysts say. 24. Out ahead of its rivals Out ahead of its rivals Smart rings have been a niche inside a niche in the wearables world for more than a decade. But in the last few years, they’ve enjoyed a renaissance as more attention and hype brought ******* names to the category. Finnish company Oura has been around longer than most and is now the class leader despite fierce competition. At the end of last year, Oura released the Ring 4 to address the flaws of its predecessor and keep ahead of its now many imitators. It’s easy to say that it remains a technological marvel, but harder to say if it’s worth a decent chunk of your hard-earned to get one. Daniel Cooper for Engadget Oura’s latest Ring is the best smart ring on the market. But its range of functions remains limited by its size and the fact that it’s a ring. Pros More comfortable Better data collection Gorgeous, clean app Cons Requires paid subscription to use basic hardware features I’m not sure why the paint jobs cost extra $349 at Oura Hardware Daniel Cooper for Engadget Oura put a lot of effort into nipping-and-tucking the Ring 4, like ditching the epoxy resin interior for a full titanium body. The Ring 3, especially once it moved beyond its squared-off side, already looked like a fashion ring, and the Ring 4 continues in that vein. I wear my Oura Ring on my left index finger with a Vitaly Grip ring on the right to balance the look. And nobody can tell the difference between the two, which is just how it should be. Unlike a watch strapped in place, rings have a knack of turning on your finger through the day. To combat this drift, Oura’s previous rings housed their sensors in raised domes on the inside surface to maintain contact with your flesh. I never found them uncomfortable, but it was an issue for some, which is why Oura has worked to re-package the sensors to fit flush. In lieu of that, there’s now an ugly-**** notch on the ring to indicate the side that should be facing your palm at all times. Since it’s easy for the sensors to be out of alignment, you’re constantly at risk of poor quality data or, worse, gaps. Oura upped the number of signal pathways from eight on the Ring 3 to 18 here in order to maximize data collection. Plus, a new algorithm hunts for the most efficient way to pull data from those sensors to hopefully ensure gaps are a thing of the past. The Ring 4 is available in a wider number of sizes than its predecessor, fitting fingers from size 4 to 15. With a re-engineered ring comes a re-engineered charging dock that’s a lot nicer, too. Unfortunately, it’s also slightly ******* and heavier, which is a burden when you’re taking the ring on a trip lasting longer than seven days. If you already own an Oura Ring 3, then I’d say that while the Ring 4 is nicer, more comfortable and more useful, it’s not so compelling to make you ditch an existing unit in good working order. In use Daniel Cooper for Engadget One downside of Oura’s iterative update is that much of what I wrote about the Ring 3 remains true about the Ring 4. Once it’s on your finger, it should very quickly fade into the background of your day, and it’s plenty easy to forget. Naturally, you’ll do all of your interacting with the ring via its mobile app, which is one of the best available for a smart ring. You’ll get regular notifications telling you how far through your daily activity goal you are, plus advice on when to get ready for bed. It’ll also send the occasional reminder to get up and move if the ring feels you’ve been sitting for too long. Open the app and you’ll first be presented with a row of numbers showing your Readiness, Sleep, Activity, Heart Rate and Stress scores. Scroll down and you’ll get panes with more information about your activity goals, stress metrics and heart rate. If there’s an issue, you’ll also get additional commentary about the problem and suggestions on how to improve. For instance, my resting heart rate dropped in the late evening because I’d gone to town on a very big bag of Doritos. The ring knew, and told me that if I kept eating close to my bedtime, I’d ruin the quality of my sleep. Keep scrolling and you’ll find your activity timeline, based on what the ring thinks you’ve been up to that day. Sadly, in my experience the system will frequently assume you’re exercising when it sees movement plus an elevated heart rate. It’ll often accuse me of doing some form of rigorous workout when, in reality, I’m just going up and down stairs while I get my kids ready for school. If you’re doing one type of activity, then it’ll pick it up as such but if you’re chopping and changing — for instance by doing circuits — then it’ll be labeled as “other.” If, in fact, it gets labeled at all: I have had instances where walking to and from my gym was recognised, but nothing I was doing when I was actually working out counted. The app has a number of hidden depths, including the Explore section which hosts a small library of meditation content. There’s also Oura Labs, which is where the company shares its not-ready-for-prime-time features before they’re added to the platform proper. At present, the company is testing Oura Advisor, a conversational AI that gives you the same advice the app would anyway, just in a chat box format. It’s also testing an AI-based food-tracking algorithm that’ll discern what you’re eating from a picture of your meal. We’ll get into the economics of this down in the Price section, but Oura paywalls a number of key features behind its Membership program. If you don’t cough up, you won’t get 24/7 heart-rate tracking, temperature monitoring, menstrual cycle insights, SpO2 and VO2 Max analysis. All of these features are essential if you’re looking to get even the basic use out of your Ring 4. As for battery life, I wear a size 10 ring and over the last two months I’ve fairly regularly wrung seven days out of the device before I’m advised to find a charger. Naturally, the ******* rings have a ******* battery, and so your mileage may vary, but the company is promising “up to” eight days. Having lost a significant amount of weight in 2024, I would often find my Ring 3 sliding clean off my finger. Thankfully, if your ring is paired with your smartphone, you’ll now be able to see its last-known location through the app. Unfortunately, this is just using your phone’s GPS, so while you’ll be able to know if it’s in your home (or further afield), it’s no help finding which couch cushion it fell under. Consequently, it’ll still be worth picking up third-party developer Andreas Assermark’s Find My Ring app, which will use the Bluetooth signal strength to help you pinpoint its location. Tracking activity, sleep and stress Daniel Cooper for Engadget I’ve never believed wearables, or any consumer-grade health device, can or should be held to the same standard as a clinical model. The smarter approach is to trust the trend and look for patterns rather than obsess if you did 10,000 or 10,001 steps in a day. Especially as, for most people, if you’ve had a rough night or you’re feeling like hell, you probably already know. What Oura offers is a lot of data which, if you’re not happy with a single aggregate score, you can drill down into. Thanks to a British Airways snafu, I wasn’t able to get my intended flight out to CES on January 4 and was waitlisted for the following day. That was a pretty stressful time given I’d be letting the Engadget team down on a pretty crucial and busy week. Looking at the data now, I can see my resting heart rate spiked on Saturday and didn’t settle for a few days. Oura also provides a metric for Daytime Stress, which aggregates your heart rate, HRV, motion and body temperature through the day. What’s interesting is that even if the ring is keeping an eye on my heart rate, there are several instances where it stops collecting stress data. For instance, that stressful Saturday, my heart was racing but there’s no Stress metric from 7:45 to 11:15. A few days after I had some distressing personal news and while my heart rate spiked to 158bpm, the stress metric disappeared entirely. I’ve already griped about the issues with automatic activity detection, even if it gets the bulk of its calls correct. I am often vexed, however, that it’ll often have a delay between you starting an activity and it beginning to track it. For instance, one of my regular lunchtime walks is to a local landmark 0.8 miles away from my home and back again. But often, the ring won’t notice that I’m out for a walk until I’m a way down the road, curtailing my stats, even if it has my phone’s GPS to help. These are minor gripes but ones worth knowing if you’re thinking about using the ring for more intensive insights. Nobody in their right mind would think about buying a smart ring in place of a smartwatch, but be aware the data you’ll get is not perfect. There’s one thing that I’m very intrigued by, even if I’m not in a position to test it right now, which is the recent tie-up between Oura and (Diabetes biosensor company) Dexcom. The partnership, announced November 2024, will see the two companies share data between their respective platforms. Plus, Dexcom has put $75 million behind the ring maker, pushing its valuation north of $5 billion. Price and the Competition The Oura Ring 4 is available for $349 if you opt for the default silver or ****** colorways. Should your taste extend to brushed silver or stealth, then you’ll need to pay $399, while the gold or rose gold paint jobs are $499. Before you buy, you’ll need to order a sizing kit — the existing sizing kits are not compatible with the Oura 4 — and are available in Size 4 through 15. As explained earlier, key features aren’t available for use unless you pay $5.99 a month or $70 a year for Oura Membership. Oura has been charging this fee since the launch of the Ring 3 and is, for now, a key plank of its business model. Now, plenty of companies will sell you their hardware and paywall off additional features for you to subscribe for afterward. I suspect the reason the Membership rankles so many people is that the features held back aren’t just nice to have, they’re essential. On a pragmatic level, small hardware businesses can’t survive without the lifeblood recurring revenue from existing customers brings in. $70 a year is, to be blunt, your insurance ensuring that Oura doesn’t go belly-up, turning your smart ring into a dumb one. Oura has been good at regularly adding more features to its platform, and allowing users to beta test them in Labs on the way. Plus, the company has been working with academics to help refine its data collection and prove its methods are sound. But the approach of charging for what should be basic features is always likely to rankle the users. And it gives Oura’s rivals, which may not be as well-equipped, an easy stick with which to beat the current market leader. Samsung’s Galaxy Ring isn’t as good as Oura, but it retails for $400 without any additional monthly charges. Ultrahuman, Circular and RingConn all boast they won’t charge you extra to use their ring’s hardware and software features. Wrap-up Daniel Cooper for Engadget The Oura Ring 4 is a stellar piece of hardware, an engineering marvel and a useful companion as you go about your day. If I sound like I’ve been nitpicking, it’s because the overall package is so good that it’s hard not to focus on the specs of dirt on the otherwise clean plate. The ring and its companion app are well-developed and muscular, offering a useful way to sum up your day. If you’re looking to buy a smart ring, then there’s little need to explore the wider market unless you are particularly predisposed to buying a Samsung. If there’s a downside, it’s that Oura remains forever constrained by the limitations a smart ring imposes. As I wrote last year, there’s only so much data you can collect reliably from such a small device worn on the finger. Not to mention, they’re designed to fade into the background of your life, keeping an eye on your vitals and offering some post-facto tips. If you want something more comprehensive, then it’s likely a smartwatch is a better option, but for everything else, there’s this.
