Global leaders, tech bosses gather to debate AI future
Global leaders, tech bosses gather to debate AI future
World leaders, tech bosses, academics and other experts are gathering in Paris for a two-day summit on the threats and promises of artificial intelligence.
On Monday they will start debating the impact of the disruptive technology on the public, including potential applications of AI in areas such as health, education and work, as well as its regulation and responsible use.
The meeting brings together some 1500 participants from about 100 countries and follows two previous AI global summits: in the United Kingdom in 2023 and in South Korea last year.
Among the politicians participating this year are US Vice President JD Vance, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ******* Chancellor Olaf Scholz and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
From the tech side, the high-profile names include the chief executives of Microsoft, OpenAI and Google.
French President Emmanuel Macron said he wants to showcase his country as a leader in the field of AI at the summit.
“France is the leading country in Europe in the field of artificial intelligence,” he said in an interview with the newspaper Le Parisien over the weekend.
In terms of AI regulation, Macron said he would like to find a middle path.
He said there was a danger that some countries might establish no rules at all, but added: “There is also the risk that Europe, conversely, sets too many rules, turns away from others and therefore can no longer be innovative. We must maintain this balance.”

Dollar gains on Trump tariff threats, euro near 2-year low
Dollar gains on Trump tariff threats, euro near 2-year low
By Ankur Banerjee
SINGAPORE (Reuters) – The dollar firmed on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump said he was set to impose new 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminium imports, putting pressure on the euro and the commodity-focused *********** and New Zealand dollars.
Trump also said he will announce reciprocal tariffs on Tuesday or Wednesday, applying them to all countries and matching the tariff rates levied by each country. The move adds to jitters over a global trade war, with China’s retaliatory duties on U.S. goods due to take effect on Monday.
Trump last week kicked off a trade war, first by imposing tariffs on Mexico and Canada and then pausing them, but sticking with duties on ******** goods. That led to a measured ****-for-tat response from Beijing suggesting some room for negotiations.
The euro was 0.1% lower at $1.0317 in early trading, close to the more than two-year low of $1.0125 it touched last week as investors braced for tariffs that Trump has repeatedly threatened against Europe.
The *********** dollar was down 0.21% at $0.6264, hovering near the five-year low it touched last week, while the kiwi eased 0.12% at $0.5649. The ********* dollar weakened over 0.2% as Canada is the largest supplier of primary aluminium metal to the United States.
Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo, said the old playbook can no longer be used because China is no more a significant supplier of steel to the U.S. after the 2018 tariffs.
“The immediate concern, however, might not be inflation, as there could be counter effects such as demand slowdown. The ******* concern is the uncertainty and the shift towards a more protectionist world.”
Beyond Trump, investor focus will be on U.S. inflation data on Wednesday and an appearance by the Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell before the House of Representatives on Tuesday and Wednesday, with tariffs likely to be in the spotlight.
Analysts have said that tariffs could be inflationary and put further pressure on the Fed to keep interest rates elevated. Markets are pricing in 36 basis points of cuts this year, down from 42 bps after an upbeat payrolls report on Friday.
Macquarie strategists said the January employment report sends an upbeat message about the labour market and overall economic growth but the elevated uncertainty has led the firm to change its view on the Fed’s policy path this year.
“Our updated view is for no change in the fed funds rate during 2025 with it likely to remain in the 4.25 to 4.5% range. Previously we had suggested there would be just one further 25 bps cut in either March or May.”
Story Continues
The dollar index, which measures the U.S. currency against six other units, was steady at 108.23 in early trading. Sterling was little changed at $1.23915.
The Japanese yen weakened 0.4% to around 152 per dollar, but remained not far from the one-month high it touched on Friday on growing expectation of the Bank of Japan hiking interest rates this year.

China’s former *** ambassador clashes with ‘AI godfather’ at summit

Fu Ying also expressed regret about the negative impact of tensions between the US and China on the progress of AI safety
A former ******** official poked fun at a major international AI safety report led by “AI Godfather” professor Yoshua Bengio and co-authored by 96 global experts – in front of him.
Fu Ying, former vice minister of foreign affairs and once China’s *** ambassador, is now an academic at Tsinghua University in Beijing.
The pair were speaking at a panel discussion ahead of a two-day global AI summit starting in Paris on Monday.
The aim of the summit is to unite world leaders, tech executives, and academics to examine AI’s impact on society, governance, and the environment.
Fu Ying began by thanking Canada’s Prof Bengio for the “very, very long” document, adding that the ******** translation stretched to around 400 pages and she hadn’t finished reading it.
She also had a dig at the title of the AI Safety Institute – of which Prof Bengio is a member.
China now has its own equivalent; but they decided to call it The AI Development and Safety Network, she said, because there are lots of institutes already but this wording emphasised the importance of collaboration.
The AI Action Summit is welcoming guests from 80 countries, with OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, Microsoft president Brad Smith and Google chief executive Sundar Pichai among the big names in US tech attending.
Elon Musk is not on the guest list but it is currently unknown whether he will decide to join them.
A key focus is regulating AI in an increasingly fractured world. The summit comes weeks after a seismic industry shift as China’s DeepSeek unveiled a powerful, low-cost AI model, challenging US dominance.
The pair’s heated exchanges were a symbol of global political jostling in the powerful AI arms race, but Fu Ying also expressed regret about the negative impact of current hostilities between the US and China on the progress of AI safety.
“At a time when the science is going in an upward trajectory, the relationship is falling in the wrong direction and it is affecting unity and collaboration to manage risks,” she said.
“It’s very unfortunate.”
She gave a carefully-crafted glimpse behind the curtain of China’s AI scene, describing an “explosive *******” of innovation since the country first published its AI development plan in 2017, five years before ChatGPT became a viral sensation in the west.
She added that “when the pace [of development] is rapid, risky stuff occurs” but did not elaborate on what might have taken place.
“The ******** move faster [than the west] but it’s full of problems,” she said.
Fu Ying argued that building AI tools on foundations which are open source, meaning everyone can see how they work and therefore contribute to improving them, was the most effective way to make sure the tech did not cause harm.
Most of the US tech giants do not share the tech which drives their products.
Maria Axente
China’s former *** ambassador, Fu Ying, on stage at a panel discussion in Paris
Open source offers humans “better opportunities to detect and solve problems”, she said, adding that “the lack of transparency among the giants makes people nervous”.
But Prof Bengio disagreed.
His view was that open source also left the tech wide open for criminals to misuse.
He did however concede that “from a safety point of view”, it was easier to spot issues with the viral ******** AI assistant DeepSeek, which was built using open source architecture, than ChatGPT, whose code has not been shared by its creator OpenAI.
On Tuesday it is the turn of world leaders including French president Emmanuel Macron, India’s PM Narendra Modi and US Vice President JD Vance to hold talks at the summit.
Discussions will include how AI will impact the world of work and be used in the public interest, and how to mitigate its risks.
A new $400m partnership between several countries has also been announced, aimed at supporting AI initiatives which serve the public interest, such as healthcare.
In a BBC interview, *** technology secretary Peter Kyle said he thought it would be dangerous for the *** to fall behind in its adoption of the tech.
Dr Laura Gilbert, who advises the government on AI, said she believed it was essential to maintain the NHS because of the efficiencies it promised. “How are you going to fund the NHS without grabbing AI?” she asked.
Matt Clifford, who wrote the ***’s AI Action Plan which the government has accepted in full, warned that the tech would be “more radical” than when typing was replaced with word processing, as computers first entered the workplace.
“The industrial revolution was the automation of physical labour; AI is the automation of cognitive labour,” said Marc Warner, the boss of the AI firm Faculty. He added that he did not believe his two-year-old child would “have a job as we know them today.”

(Reuters) – Nicaragua’s government described the ******** as “depraved” and “pedophile” on Sunday, two days after an interview on Catholic television channel EWTN with exiled Nicaraguan Bishop Rolando Alvarez, one of the fiercest critics of President Daniel Ortega.
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT
The comments are some of the Ortega government’s harshest attacks yet against the ********, after it accused Catholic institutions of seeking to undermine the government and expelled nearly 50 priests and nuns.

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
Analysts say heightened tensions could put additional pressure on Catholic bishops and priests who remain in the Central American country, and limit the possibility of rapprochement with the Holy See.
KEY QUOTES
Nicaragua’s Foreign Ministry referred to the highest Catholic institution as the “depraved, pedophile ******** State,” saying it “allies with forces of darkness, barbarism, genocide and evil,” adding that it was “very much guilty of crimes against humanity.”
CONTEXT
Alvarez’s television appearance on February 7 was his first interview since being released in January 2024 from more than a year in detention.
He expressed gratitude for his physical and mental recovery and hope for the Nicaraguan people, saying, “In the diaspora, faith always grows, and hope gets stronger.”
Alvarez’s arrest in 2022 was one of the most high-profile detentions during a crackdown on dissent that stemmed from protests in 2018 that killed more than 350 and sparked international outcry over rights abuses.
THE RESPONSE
In recent months, Pope Francis has asked Catholics to pray for Nicaragua, calling in December for “a path of respectful and constructive dialogue.”

Eagles thwart Chiefs’ pursuit of history in Super Bowl LIX, as Jalen Hurts outshines Patrick Mahomes
Eagles thwart Chiefs’ pursuit of history in Super Bowl LIX, as Jalen Hurts outshines Patrick Mahomes
NEW ORLEANS — A more fragile team would have folded. It wouldn’t have made it back here, because it wouldn’t have been able to weather the series of storms this Philadelphia Eagles franchise faced along the way.
And it wouldn’t have halted history on the sport’s biggest stage.
Certainly not like that.
But these Eagles were different — defiant, even. And on Sunday night in Super Bowl LIX, they were utterly dominant. Their reward is the franchise’s second world championship, a stunning 40-22 rout of the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, a resounding victory that avenges a gutting, last-second Super Bowl loss two years ago to these same Chiefs and returns the city of Brotherly Love to the top of the football world.
This time, the Philly Special wasn’t needed.
This time, the Eagles’ defense was so devastating that Patrick Mahomes — already a three-time Super Bowl MVP before the age of 30 — staggered through one of the worst games of his seven-year NFL career.
This time, Jalen Hurts left no doubt.
Mahomes, under heavy duress throughout, was sacked six times and hit 11 times. He finished 21-for-32 for 257 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions and a lost fumble, though most of Mahomes’ production came well after the game had been decided. The Eagles led 34-0 before the Chiefs even crossed midfield.
Hurts, who was named Super Bowl MVP, shined, finishing with just five incompletions, 221 passing yards and a Super Bowl rushing record for quarterbacks (72 yards) to go with three total touchdowns.
Philly’s triumph also concluded one of the greatest seasons ever from a running back: With 57 yards Sunday, the Eagles’ Saquon Barkley surpassed Hall of Famer Terrell Davis for the most rushing yards in a single season in NFL history, including the playoffs. He finished with 2,504, further cementing the fact that his offseason signing last March was one of the shrewdest in league history.
Most impressive in the Eagles’ victory, though, was that they routed the mighty Chiefs without needing Barkley to take the game over. This win was a testament to the roster general manager Howie Roseman has constructed and the job coach Nick Sirianni has done guiding his team through a tumultuous two-year stretch.
Philadelphia owned the first half by owning the trenches; Mahomes was hit seven times, sacked twice and hurried on what seemed like every snap. The Eagles raced to a 24-0 lead after intercepting Mahomes twice; rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean — celebrating his 22nd birthday Sunday — took the first back for a 38-yard touchdown, then linebacker Zack Baun’s pick set up a 12-yard touchdown throw from Hurts to A.J. Brown.

Philadelphia enjoyed sizable first-half advantages in total yards (179-23), rushing yards (62-3) and first downs (13-1). Mahomes completed just six passes on 14 attempts for 33 yards; through two quarters, it was the worst EPA per dropback for a quarterback in a Super Bowl since 2000.
It was a rare sight at this stage of the playoffs: One of the all-time greats looked mortal.
Hurts connected with wideout DeVonta Smith for a 46-yard touchdown late in the third quarter, and from there, the decidedly pro-Eagles crowd at Caesars Superdome could start to smell another championship.
Philadelphia’s victory ended Kansas City’s season-long pursuit of history: With a win, the Chiefs would have become the first team in the 59-year Super Bowl era to win three in a row. Instead, they finished as the ninth back-to-back champs to fall short. No team has won three straight NFL championships since Vince Lombardi’s 1965-67 Green Bay Packers.
It was just the fourth playoff loss of Mahomes’ seven-year career.
The Eagles’ second title in eight seasons capped a stunning reversal from where this team was a year ago, reeling from a late-season collapse rife with drama, a coach on the hot seat, two coordinators on the outs, a star player’s retirement and rumblings of an icy relationship between coach and quarterback.
This title sealed the Eagles’ status as one of the league’s most resilient teams.
It was just two years ago that Jalen Hurts sat in his postgame news conference following the Eagles’ Super Bowl LVII loss, sullen but not sulking, repeating the same phrase over and over.
“You either win or you learn,” he kept saying.
Hurts had just thrown for 304 yards and piled up four total touchdowns, only to watch Mahomes lead four straight second-half-scoring drives and hand the Eagles a gutting, last-second 38-35 loss. Before meeting with reporters that night in Glendale, Ariz., Hurts tried to apologize to his teammates in a despondent locker room, wanting to shoulder the blame for a critical first-half fumble. The quarterback was quickly rebuffed.
“Nah man, we’re all together,” they assured him.
At his postgame news conference, Hurts kept leaning on the lessons that would linger. That night undoubtedly stung. But Hurts knew, even with the wound still so fresh, it would make him better.
“It’s something that I know will motivate me,” Hurts said. “I been here (now) … That’s the beautiful thing about it.”
Two years later Hurts and the Eagles made it back — but not without first overcoming the hurdles they confronted along the way. That’s perhaps the most impressive layer to this championship: Plenty of teams would’ve fallen apart.
The Eagles never did.
“A great driving force,” Hurts called that Super Bowl loss. “It lit a flame, lit a fire in me.”

But first came the drama and disappointment of 2023; Philadelphia started 10-1 but cratered down the stretch, dropping six of its final seven, including a 23-point loss to the Bucs in the wild-card round. “We didn’t know how to handle adversity,” tight end Dallas Goedert admitted this week.
More was on the way. Both coordinators from last season, Brian Johnson and Sean Desai, were fired. At least a part of Sirianni’s offensive authority was stripped away; new coordinator Kellen Moore would be “in charge” of the unit, Sirianni admitted after the season. Vic Fangio, one of the best defensive minds in league history, signed on to coordinate a unit that finished 30th in points allowed last season. Longtime center Jason Kelce, a backbone of the organization and six-time All-Pro, retired.
“We’re thankful for that,” the coach said in New Orleans this week, reflecting on the team’s stunning collapse and its aftermath. “As bad as it sucked at the time, I know I’m grateful for that … it shaped us into who we are and it’s a big reason why we’re back here.”
But make no mistake, the heat on Sirianni was intense, both before the 2024 season and a few weeks in.
The 2024 campaign opened with Hurts and Sirianni fielding questions about “a disconnect” in their relationship — it was clear, amid last year’s offensive regression, that the two were not always on the same page. A stumbling 2-2 start did little to ease concerns, and Sirianni — despite being 36-19 in three-plus seasons in Philadelphia — was under fire, and according to various sportsbooks, among the five or six coaches most likely to get fired after the season.
Or potentially even during it.
Then something changed. At the insistence of a few of the team’s top offensive linemen, Sirianni and Moore leaned into their prized offseason acquisition, Barkley. “We wanted to find out how we could become a better offense,” right tackle Lane Johnson said.
The coaching staff listened. Barkley took off. So did the Eagles. Philly ripped off 10 straight wins, claimed the NFC East title and started to resemble a Super Bowl contender. By year’s end, Barkley had put together one of the finest seasons in league history, becoming the ninth player ever to eclipse 2,000 rushing yards. His 46 runs of 10-plus yards were an NFL-best, and he was named the league’s Offensive Player of the Year last week.
Barkley was just as explosive in playoff wins over the Packers, Rams and Commanders. His three touchdown runs of 60 yards or more set a new playoff record.
But there was more to the Eagles’ revival than just Barkley. Nearly every one of the team’s offseason moves paid off in a big way. Moore and Fangio remade their units. Behind the league’s best offensive line, Hurts finished with a career high in completion percentage (68.7) and piled up 32 total touchdowns, 14 of which came on the ground.
Fangio’s defense climbed from 26th in yards allowed to first. Draft picks DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell had stellar rookie seasons in the secondary. Baun, another offseason addition, was a revelation at linebacker. Defensive tackle Jalen Carter, the anchor of a much younger front four, has grown into one of the best game-wreckers in the league.
Carter’s unit dominated Sunday night. The Chiefs’ shaky offensive line — which had shuffled through lineup changes all season — had no answer.
It was the latest reminder that Roseman remains the best roster builder in football. This Eagles team was stacked. On Sunday night, on the game’s biggest stage, they played like it, spoiling the Chiefs’ pursuit of history and knocking the kings of the sport off their throne.
Now there’s a new champ.

Just who can stop a fifth-straight Penrith premiership?
Just who can stop a fifth-straight Penrith premiership?
Harry Grant is downplaying Melbourne’s status as the automatic challengers to Penrith, as NRL rivals bid to knock the Panthers off course in their pursuit of a remarkable fourth straight premiership.
As representatives of all 17 of the NRL’s teams descended on Sydney to launch the 2025 campaign on Monday, the question on everybody’s lips was; who will stop Penrith?
The Panthers have been the benchmark in the NRL since their first title of the Cleary dynasty in 2021, defying the game’s salary cap by losing players every year and regenerating to retain their premiership.
This year is no different with no-nonsense prop James Fisher-Harris leaving for the Warriors and maverick five-eighth Jarome Luai heading to Wests Tigers along with winger Sunia Turuva.
Their exits have meant the Storm will begin 2025 as favourites to win the grand final after claiming last year’s minor premiership.
“I don’t think it’s fair to say that (we are favourites) because no footy has been played yet,” Grant said, noting the Storm had lost some of their most-valued clubmen.
But the excitement for Melbourne is understandable given they were without Nelson Asofa-Solomona when they were narrowly defeated in the grand final and have added one-time NSW State of Origin prop Stefano Utoikamanu to an all-star roster.
The Storm have also won a premiership within two seasons after each of their four grand-final losses, albeit with some titles stripped for salary-cap breaches.
“He (Utoikamanu) has been a big addition for the team and the mindset he has come in with has been really pleasing,” Grant said.
“He’s a really good guy who wants to come down to Melbourne and get the best out of himself and reach his potential and we want to help him do that.”
“We can’t look into it (the Storm’s bounce back record),” added Grant.
“We’re lucky we have ‘Bellsa’ (Craig Bellamy) and some of the coaching staff who have been through those losses and then flipped the coin to go on and win the following season.
“It’s important that we learn from those guys and put that into practice.”
Across the competition, there’s an argument to be had that most teams have improved.
Cronulla will feel emboldened by the arrival of Addin Fonua-Blake after shedding their finals hoodoo last year.
Fallen giants Parramatta and Souths have new coaches in the shape of Jason Ryles and Wayne Bennett.
But arguably the biggest transformation could come from Brisbane, whose 12th- placed finish in 2024 paved the way for Kevin Walters’ exit and Michael Maguire’s arrival at Red Hill.
“We should have been (a top-four side) but that’s done now and we have to learn from that,” said prop Payne Haas.
“We want to be in the top four this year and really go after it.”
And while their rivals try to keep up, Penrith are eager to go one better.
Ivan Cleary’s men won’t have the home comforts of BlueBet Stadium as it undergoes renovation this year.
They kick off the season against the Sharks in Las Vegas on March 2 with five-eighth Blaize Talagi and back-rower Isaiah Papali’i their most-notable off-season recruits.
And even for all their success and roster turnover, forward Liam Martin insists the Panthers remain as hungry as ever before.
“It’s player-driven, that winning feeling is addictive and you want to be there again,” Martin said.
“New people come in who haven’t experienced it like Ice and Blaize, they are hungry for their first.
“So they are driving another bit of motivation. It’s going to be another big year hopefully.”

Eagles’ Saquon Barkley sets combined rushing yards record for single season
Eagles’ Saquon Barkley sets combined rushing yards record for single season
Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley has set a new single-season rushing yards record for regular season and playoffs combined — on his 28th birthday, no less.
Barkley’s two-yard run in the second quarter of Super Bowl LIX against the Kansas City Chiefs put him ahead of Pro Football Hall of Famer Terrell Davis’ mark of 2,476 yards, which came in the Denver Broncos’ Super Bowl season of 1998. Barkley finished the game with 57 rushing yards on 25 carries, giving him 2,504 rushing yards combined between the regular season and playoffs.
“It’s special,” Barkley said earlier this week of the opportunity to break the rushing record. “I can’t do it without my teammates. … The record is cool and all, but the main thing is winning the Super Bowl. That’s our mindset.”
During Philadelphia’s playoff run, which has seen the Eagles reach the Super Bowl for the second time in three seasons, the running back has had two games with multiple touchdowns. Additionally, Barkley has had three postseason rushing touchdowns of at least 60 yards. Since 1994, no other player has had multiple such runs in the playoffs throughout their entire careers, let alone in a single postseason. Entering the Super Bowl, Barkley has rushed for 442 yards and five touchdowns in the playoffs.

Eagles’ Saquon Barkley to Giants fans: ‘There is nothing but love’
This comes on the heels of a magnificent regular season that saw Barkley rush for a league-leading 2,005 yards. Despite having a shot in Week 18 at the regular season rushing record, currently at 2,105 held by Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson, Barkley sat out the final game of the regular season. He also added 13 rushing touchdowns in his first season with the Eagles after spending six seasons with the New York Giants, a fellow NFC East team. In his time with the Giants, Barkley played in just two playoff games. He has surpassed that in one year with the Eagles with Super Bowl LIX serving as his fourth postseason game of the season.
Barkley was named the AP Offensive Player of the Year on Thursday. Additionally, he was also a first-team All-Pro selection and chosen for his third Pro Bowl this season.
Top six rushing seasons (combined regular season/playoffs): 1-Barkley, Eagles in 2024: 2,504 yards in 20 games 2-Davis, Broncos in 1998: 2,476 yards in 19 games 3-Davis, Broncos in 1997: 2,331 yards in 19 games 4-Dickerson, Los Angeles Rams in 1984: 2,212 yards in 17 games 5-Adrian Peterson, Minnesota Vikings in 2012: 2,196 yards in 17 games 6-Derrick Henry, Baltimore Ravens in 2024: 2,191 yards in 19 games

Patrick Mahomes throws 2 first-half INTs, DeJean pick-six as Chiefs trail Eagles big in Super Bowl
The Athletic has live coverage of Chiefs vs Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, and Kendrick Lamar’s halftime performance.
The Philadelphia Eagles stormed out to a 24-0 first-half lead over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX, a dominant opening highlighted by rookie cornerback Cooper DeJean’s pick-six on his 22nd birthday.
DeJean’s interception was the first of his career, and marked the first playoff pick-six thrown by Patrick Mahomes in his eight-year career. Mahomes has only thrown five pick-sixes since 2017 and Sunday’s marked his first since Christmas Day 2023.
DeJean’s interception was the first interception returned for a touchdown in a Super Bowl since 2017, when Atlanta Falcons defensive back Robert Alford took a Tom Brady pass 82 yards to the house to jump ahead of the New England Patriots 20-0.

According to the broadcast, DeJean is the second player to score a championship game touchdown on his birthday, joining Eagles legend Steve Van Buren in 1947.
Three drives after DeJean’s score, Mahomes threw his second interception of the half, this time to linebacker Zach Baun over the middle of the field. That set the Eagles up for an easy touchdown two plays later as Jalen Hurts hit A.J. Brown for a 12-yard score.
Brown’s touchdown gave the Eagles the second-largest halftime lead in Super Bowl history.
Of the Chiefs’ seven drives to start, five have ended in punts. Mahomes tallied just 33 yards on 6-of-14 passing and was sacked three times. Between Kareem Hunt and Isiah Pacheco, Kansas City’s ground attack managed only 3 yards on three carries.

Woolworths boss Amanda Bardwell orders staff back to the office three days a week
Woolworths boss Amanda Bardwell orders staff back to the office three days a week
Woolworths has tightened the reins on working-from-home privileges for its 10,000 office staff, asking them to commit to spending at least three days a week in the office.
The supermarket giant joins a list of major companies requiring staff to return to the office, including e-commerce giant Amazon, Flight Centre, tech firm Dell, Bendigo Bank and financial services group AMP.
Rival Coles has also ordered 5000 of its staff to work three days a week in the office. The new policy requires employees to ensure at least one of the days falls on Monday or Friday, effectively ruling out staff taking extra-long weekends away and working remotely.
In a letter to staff on Monday, Woolworths chief executive Amanda Bardwell said there was now an expectation its support staff to “connect with their team in the office a minimum of three days per week, with the flexibility to work remotely for the remaining two days”.
“Over the last few years, we have seen many of our Support team members successfully embrace hybrid ways of working, whilst delivering our Group purpose of creating better experiences together for a better tomorrow,” she said.
“A key priority for us in 2025 is to create more opportunities for in person connection to increase our responsiveness and better serve our customers.
“To support this, we are evolving our hybrid ways of working to ensure we better balance the needs of our customers and business, with the needs of our team.”
Its 10,000 support office team members work from 10 different offices across Australia.
By June 2, Woolworths expects all team members to spend at least one day a week in the office. The number of days required in the office rises to two by August 4, and to three by October 6.
Last November, Coles boss Leah Weckert told staff they needed to work in the office three days a week.
“In recognising the diversity of our workforce, each team will transition to our new ways of working at a pace that suits them, allowing time to plan and adjust,” she said.
“I encourage you to consider any arrangement you may need to make to facilitate our new ways of working.”

Trump says he has directed Treasury to stop minting new pennies, citing cost
Trump says he has directed Treasury to stop minting new pennies, citing cost
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says he has directed the Treasury Department to stop minting new pennies, citing the cost of producing the one-cent coin.
“For far too long the United States has minted pennies which literally cost us more than 2 cents. This is so wasteful!” Trump wrote in a post Sunday night on his Truth Social site. “I have instructed my Secretary of the US Treasury to stop producing new pennies.”
Trump’s new administration has been sharply focused on cutting costs, targeting entire agencies and large swaths of the federal workforce for dismissal.
“Let’s rip the waste out of our great nations budget, even if it’s a penny at a time,” he wrote.
Trump sent the message after attending the first half of the Super Bowl in New Orleans.

Southern Hemisphere jags more thick Chilean copper hits
Southern Hemisphere jags more thick Chilean copper hits
Southern Hemisphere Mining has nailed further copper hits up to 128 metres thick as part of its 2024 program consisting of 2728m drilled across 26 holes at the company’s flagship Llahuin copper-gold-molybdenum project, 350 kilometres north of Santiago in Chile.
Results just received from the drill program comprise the large 128m hit stretching from a depth of 16m, which returned a grade of 0.41 per cent copper-equivalent ending in mineralisation. This included a 32m section going 0.57pc copper-equivalent from 66m.
A further 30m running at 0.42pc copper-equivalent from surface included 26m at 0.56pc copper-equivalent from 40m to end of hole and an 8m slice grading 0.96pc copper-equivalent from 42m.
The latest results continue the string of impressive thick hits in the South American nation renowned as the global leader in copper production.
Previous drilling reported a swag of intervals more than 100m thick, from surface or near surface, with solid copper-equivalent grades containing a higher-grade section.
An intersection of 105m at 0.64pc from surface including 26m going 0.91pc from 78m, 132m going 0.48pc from surface including 60m at 0.67pc from surface, and 122m for 0.41pc from a depth of 2m including 48m running 0.52pc from 66m.
Management says many holes ended in mineralisation and a diamond drilling campaign in the first half of this year will target the mineralisation for depth extensions.
The neighbouring El Espino mine is only 8km west of Llahuin and is in construction by Pucobre and Resource Capital Funds. Many of these reverse circulation (RC) holes intersected excellent porphyry-style grades over large and wide zones and ended in copper-gold mineralisation, which are now ready for diamond tails to advance the depth and grade potential.
Southern Hemisphere’s latest drilling program has defined a new mineralised zone south of its Ferro deposit with the array of thick intercepts expected to feed into a resource upgrade in the first half of next year.
A potential feeder zone at its nearby Cerro deposit has also been identified and while the pre-collars are in place a diamond rig will be brought in to drill “diamond tails” and hammer into the deeper bedrock.
A magnetotelluric (MT) survey is nearing completion and the company believes this will complement its existing induced-polarisation, geochemical and drill data aiding its search for deeper copper targets.
The survey is expected to help the company target planned deeper holes at the Cerro and Ferro deposits and a southern porphyry target, Curiosity.
An MT survey is an electromagnetic geophysical method for measuring the electrical resistivity of the earth’s sub-surface. The surveys were used to identify some world-class copper porphyry deposits in the region, including Atex Resources’ 61-square-kilometre Valeriano deposit in northern Chile.
Southern Hemisphere’s latest 2728m drilling program also extended the project’s strike length 300m to the southwest, stretching it from 1.9km to 2.2km.
Mineralisation remains open in that direction and the company remains laser-focused on further drilling to determine the project’s full potential.
Southern Hemisphere is particularly interested in its Curiosity target at the Southern Porphyry prospect. The target sits 550m below the previous Santa Maria gold workings and is about 1km in diameter with a depth of 2km.
The diameter of the target stretches to 2km at depth.
Management also remains focused on the ground that lies between the Cerro and Ferro deposits, which is known as the Cerro-Ferro link. The area has returned soil samples running about 1000 parts per million copper.
The results from last year’s program are part of Southern Hemisphere’s plan revealed in September for a total of 5000m of reverse circulation and diamond drilling to be undertaken at the site.
It is aiming to add scale to its copper resource that consists of 169 million tonnes grading 0.4pc copper-equivalent for 680,000t of copper-equivalent material, which was measured under the old 2004 JORC guidelines.
The updated resource planned for the first half of next year will establish a 2012 JORC-compliant updated mineral resource. With many thick intervals from surface or shallow depths, the company feels there is a prime opportunity to bolster the resource with near-surface tonnes and provide for a potential open-pit operation at the project.
In a further positive for the project’s development, water has been intersected in every hole drilled and testing indicates it to be a fresh source. This offers the potential to provide all or the bulk of the water that would be required during mine operations.
With many pundits continuing to push the rising copper demand narrative to aid production of cleaner energy, Southern Hemisphere may find itself chasing the right commodity in the right location.

Super Bowl 2025: Philadelphia Eagles demolish Kansas City Chiefs 40-14 to win NFL title
Super Bowl 2025: Philadelphia Eagles demolish Kansas City Chiefs 40-14 to win NFL title
Donald Trump became the first sitting US president to attend America’s biggest game, while Taylor Swift was among the many celebrities at the Superdome, cheering on her boyfriend Travis Kelce, the Kansas City tight end.
Yet he and the Chiefs were never in the game. They earned just one first down in the first half and that was on their very first play.
The Eagles opened the scoring on their second possession with Hurts scoring on the ‘tush push’ play which they have mastered and no team has found answer to.
Jake Elliott kicked a field goal on the Eagles’ next possession before their defence took charge, sacking Mahomes on successive plays and on the next, Cooper DeJean returned an interception for a 38-yard touchdown.
Mahomes had gone 298 pass attempts without throwing an interception, and he threw another just six plays later. It was right in front of his own end zone and resulted in a touchdown for AJ Brown.
The Eagles added another field goal after half-time, before Hurts launched the ball down the middle for DeVonta Smith to claim a score fitting for the Super Bowl stage.
No team has ever been shutout in a Super Bowl, but the Chiefs avoided that ignominy with Mahomes throwing touchdown passes to Xavier Worthy and DeAndre Hopkins either side of two more field goals by Elliott in the fourth quarter.
Mahomes threw a huge touchdown pass to Worthy at the death but this proved one game too far for the Chiefs, who have at least gone further than any previous back-to-back champion in pursuit of a Super Bowl three-peat.

Mailata is first Aussie to play in Super Bowl victory
Mailata is first Aussie to play in Super Bowl victory
Jordan Mailata is the first *********** to play in a Super Bowl victory with his Philadelphia Eagles upsetting Kansas City 40-22 in the NFL showpiece.
Mailata, the Sydney-born son of Samoan immigrants, was lauded for his influence in helping deny the Chiefs from becoming the first franchise to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
The first *********** to play in two Super Bowls gained some redemption on the Chiefs who beat his Eagles for the famed Vince Lombardi Trophy two years ago.
The 27-year-old, who played junior rugby league for the South Sydney Rabbitohs and had never played American football until drafted by the Eagles in 2018, is among four Australians to play in a Super Bowl.
But he’s the first to triumph with punters Ben Graham (Arizona, 2009), Mitch Wishnowsky (San Francisco, 2020) and Arryn Siposs, who was Mailata’s Eagles teammate two years ago, all losing.
Another *********** does have a Super Bowl ring: Jesse Williams was on the Seattle Seahawks’ roster in their 2014 triumph but didn’t play during the season because of a knee injury.
In the showcase fixture on Sunday night (Monday AEDT) at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, the Bankstown-born Mailata was hailed for his display as an offensive linesman.
“Jordan Mailata … he just covers them up, it’s like he just becomes night-time, he’s just like the moon, he just blocks out everything,” gushed Louis Riddick, a former NFL player, in commentary for ESPN.
The 2.03-metre tall, 166-kilogram Mailata helped the Eagles storm to a 24-0 halftime lead amid a horror showing from Kansas City’s megastar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was sacked three times and intercepted twice by the long break.
The nightmare for Mahomes, rated among the greatest quarterbacks ever, continued on resumption when sacked on consecutive plays for the second time in the game.
The Eagles soon added a field goal and another touchdown for an irretrievable 34-0 advantage before the Chiefs finally got on the scoreboard with a touchdown 34 seconds before the end of the third quarter.
