  1. Entrepreneur Nicola Gunby’s Cliq social networking app has already raised $646,000 Entrepreneur Nicola Gunby’s Cliq social networking app has already raised $646,000 Nicola Gunby, co-founder of Cliq. Nicola Gunby Nicola Gunby, a 30-year-old entrepreneur, longed for a community of friends when she moved to London after the pandemic, but was shocked to find herself isolated in one of the biggest cities in the world. Gunby, the co-founder of social and community networking app Cliq, hails from Nottingham in the U.K. and settled in London with her partner Jason Iliffe in 2021 after a stint in Australia. Gunby and Iliffe were expecting to become embedded in the city’s social scene but soon found that meeting people was a struggle. “How can you be in a city of millions of people but struggle to find true connection?” Gunby said. “It felt really impossible.” Nicola Gunby and her husband Jason Illife co-founded Cliq together. Nicola Gunby Gunby tried everything. She attended networking events for female founders but found them too corporate. She even turned to apps like Bumble BFF, which she found to be “super transactional,” while Facebook groups were “so outdated.” Gunby and IIiffe soon realized that the issue was far ******* than themselves and started musing over the idea of a social networking platform that brought people together in real life. After drawing up some plans, they hired an app agency to build the barebones of an app and trialed it at universities. Cliq, which was founded in February 2023, is described as an antidote to stereotypical social media platforms. Users can join communities focused on their interests and hobbies which can range from running, reading, Pilates, and faith-based groups. The purpose of the communities is to arrange events so users can meet up in person and kindle friendships. “It’s just making it easy to meet people in an authentic way … and teaching people to put their phone down, which is very difficult in this day and age when our screen time is so high and we’re so addicted to our phones,” said Gunby. Since its launch, Cliq has raised £528,900 ($646,000) in funding and built a base of 100,000 users worldwide, with the U.S., Australia and Bali its main markets outside of the U.K. Loneliness is a global issue The creation of Cliq comes as people search for connections amid what’s been described as a “loneliness epidemic.” Gallup’s global loneliness poll, which collected data in 2023, showed that one in five people surveyed worldwide felt lonely “a lot of the day.” The same demographic of people were more likely to say that they felt anger or physical pain. U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s 2023 report “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation” highlighted that loneliness is becoming a growing issue across generations and is a great risk to physical health contributing to things like dementia, stroke, or even premature death. “It’s 100% a global issue,” Gunby explained. “The pandemic made us a lot more introverted as people … I think it made a lot of people a little bit scared to socialize again. “That’s coming out of the works now, and people are wanting that in real life, connection,” she added. The loneliness issue has also been exacerbated by technology and social media, according to Gunby. “We feel so connected through our phones that we can see what our friends or influencers are doing constantly, but many of these people we don’t actually see, so we feel like we’re connected on the surface level, but when we look deeper down, we’re actually really not,” she said. “The loneliness crisis is going up and up and up, and so many people are looking for connection, but none of the apps are doing anything to solve this.” U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy recently told “The Oprah Podcast” that one solution to loneliness is not to focus more on ourselves, but to pay attention to the world outside us by investing in three things: relationships, service and community. “When we focus on connecting to something ******* than ourselves, that’s actually when we find joy,” he told Oprah Winfrey in a January episode of her podcast. ‘A true social network’ Gunby said the reason why Cliq works is because its communities operate around a shared interest and purpose. She described a distinction between social networking apps and social media apps. A social networking app is less about consuming content and more about connecting with friends, Gunby said, citing the old days of Facebook as an example of this. “The younger generation, and we speak to a lot of them … they’ve never really experienced what a true social network is,” she said. “Every single platform since then has been social media, so Instagram, TikTok, for example. We’re just sat consuming. We’re scrolling. We’re addicted to our phones.” “We’re not actually socializing with anyone, and it’s taking away that face-to-face interaction,” she added. Cliq collaborated with Gymshark to put on a walking event. Cliq Cliq, she said, is the middle ground between the “nice, social media feel,” and making it easy to meet people. “That’s why we wanted to create a hybrid model of: you connect with people online before you connect offline,” she said. She pointed out that social events can often be difficult for more introverted personalities and it can be awkward to strike up a conversation with a random person when you have nothing in common. With Cliq, the activity is the common interest, she added. “So you go to a run club as a social, maybe you’re really shy and you don’t want to open up, but you could talk about the run. You go to a book club. Maybe I don’t want to speak about myself, but you talk about the book,” Gunby said. “If you’ve got that common interest with someone, or you’ve done that activity, or it’s the community’s focus around something, you have something to open with.” Source link #Entrepreneur #Nicola #Gunbys #Cliq #social #networking #app #raised Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  3. Ed Sheeran stopped from busking in Bengaluru by Indian police Ed Sheeran stopped from busking in Bengaluru by Indian police British pop star Ed Sheeran was stopped from busking in the southern Indian city of Bengaluru on Sunday, with police saying he didn’t have the necessary permissions. A video showing a local police officer unplugging Sheeran’s microphone on Bengaluru’s Church Street – a crowded shopping and entertainment area – has since gone viral. Officials told the ANI news agency a request from Mr Sheeran’s team to busk on the road was rejected to avoid congestion in the area. But Sheeran insisted on Instagram that “we had permission to busk, by the way. Hence, us playing in that exact spot was planned out before. It wasn’t just us randomly turning up. All good though. See you at the show tonight.” The incident took place ahead of his scheduled Mathematics Tour concert at NICE Grounds in Bengaluru. Fans criticised the police intervention online, with one saying: “We live in an uncleocracy. And there’s nothing uncles love more than to stop young people from having fun,” referring to the number of vague rules that govern the use of public spaces in India. However PC Mohan, a local MP from the ruling BJP party, said “even global stars must follow local rules – no permit, no performance!” Sheeran is in India for the second year in a row on a 15-day tour, having already played in Pune Hyderabad and Chennai and with more concerts scheduled for Shillong in India’s north-east and the capital Delhi. At his Bengaluru show, Sheeran surprised fans by singing two hit local songs in the Telugu language with singer Shilpa Rao on stage. He previously collaborated with Indian singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh during the latter’s concert in Birmingham last year. While in India he has also collaborated with sitar musician Megha Rawoot on a version of his hit song Shape of You. Demand for live music concerts has been increasing in India, with Sheeran’s biggest-ever tour of the country coming close on the heels of Dua Lipa’s recent performance in Mumbai and Coldplay’s multi-city tour. With growing disposable incomes, India is an emerging player in the “concert economy”, a recent Bank of Baroda report said, with live concerts set to be worth $700-900m (£550-730m). U.S. markets were seeing volatility as technology earnings began to worry investors due to soft forecasts and mounting AI-related expenses. To offset volatility, long-term investors are expected to pile into quality dividend stocks. But which companies can help you achieve a diversified income stream? Let’s turn to a case study for ideas. This month, someone asked income investors living off their dividends to share their portfolio details on r/Dividends — a Reddit discussion board with more than 670,000 followers. Many investors shared interesting portfolios and income reports, but one comment caught our eye. Don’t Miss: An investor said he was making about $4,300 per month, or $51,950 per year. His portfolio yield was around 6.6%. “Supplements my social security income…have had this portfolio since retired 5 years now…dividends have been consistent and stable,” the investor, 68, said. Let’s take a look at some of the key dividend stocks and funds in the investor’s portfolio based on the details he shared publicly on the social media platform. Global X NASDAQ 100 Covered Call ETF Global X NASDAQ 100 Covered Call ETF (NASDAQ:QYLD) was one of the stocks in the portfolio of the investor collecting about $4,300 a month in dividends. RYLD generates income by selling call options on the small-cap-heavy Russell 2000 Index. The ETF yields about 12%. Being a covered call ETF, RYLD is also not risk-free and often posts losses during down markets. The ETF is now in the limelight as analysts believe small-cap stocks will be among the top beneficiaries of an easing monetary environment. NEOS Nasdaq-100 Hedged Equity Income ETF The NEOS Nasdaq-100 Hedged Equity Income ETF (NASDAQ:NUSI) generates income by selling call options on the Nasdaq-100. The fund has a monthly distribution rate of 8.7%. NUSI is up 13% over the past year. 10. Support needed for NI drivers to make the swap Support needed for NI drivers to make the swap Getty Images There are over 32,000 EVs on the road in Northern Ireland As the *** approaches its’ climate change goals, “support” is needed to encourage motorists in Northern Ireland to switch to electric vehicles (EVs), one EV driver has said. “The cars need to be more affordable and there needs to be proper infrastructure,” Stephen Kane said. The Electric Vehicle Association NI (EVANI) said it was too early to “take away the incentives” such as free public charging and financial schemes. Meanwhile, the Department for Transport (DfT) said there are “already a range of incentives” such as favourable taxation rates and targeted grants, and it will support “continued demand”. ‘The issue of charging’Stephen Kane Mr Kane said the cost of buying an electric car is still “too expensive” Stephen Kane was able to own an EV through a workplace scheme. He said: “The cost of buying an electric car privately is still too expensive. If I had to buy it privately I couldn’t afford it.” Mr Kane also said the infrastructure for charging in Northern Ireland is “terrible”. “We were going to a wedding in Fermanagh, so we literally drove without the heating on just to get there and back,” he said. “I had to ask someone to charge it overnight.” Mr Kane doesn’t think we will reach net climate change targets “until electric cars become cheaper to purchase”. “Overall an electric car is a really nice car to drive, I think it is the way forward. “But I just think there needs to be support,” he added. ‘Disinformation’Darren Henderson Mr Henderson said the gap in price between EVs and petrol or diesel vehicles is also closing Darren Henderson, director of EVANI, said “disinformation” on social media is affecting people’s decision to buy an EV. “Petrochemical companies are throwing information out there to try and slow things down,” he said. Mr Henderson said “range anxiety” was “a real difficulty in Northern Ireland but we have certainly turned a corner”. “In three years, we have had a 700% increase in rapid chargers, it’s by no means finished but is far more available than it was.” He added that the gap in price between EVs and petrol or diesel vehicles is also closing. Mr Henderson said hydrogen will have “a place” but not in passenger vehicles as the “efficiency just doesn’t work out”. What are Northern Ireland’s EV figures? In July 2024, there were 27,580 electric vehicles on Northern Ireland’s roads, according to the Department for Transport. This includes battery electric, petrol hybrid, diesel hybrid and range extended electric vehicles. In absence of DfT data, the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT) shows a further increase of 4,459 registrations of electric vehicles in the second half of 2024. This indicates that there are over 32,000 EVs on the road in Northern Ireland. Currently, the *** government plans to ban the ***** of new petrol or diesel cars and vans by 2035. In January 2025, the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate and Vehicle Emissions Trading Schemes were introduced in Northern Ireland. The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) said the schemes will increase the number of cars in the new market and build on stock in the second-hand market. It says the ***** of EVs remain “encouraging” but reaching net zero by 2050 will be “challenging”. “Decarbonising private cars will be important for tackling the climate crisis, and the department continues to work with other jurisdictions and the private sector to develop this process,” the DfI added. “However, we also need to provide attractive sustainable transport alternatives.” Hydrogen is the ‘real future’George McMillan Mr McMillan doesn’t see “a future in the fully electric vehicle” George McMillan, owner of a car garage, said that hydrogen powered vehicles are the “real future”. “I would jump into the hydrogen vehicle straight away,” he said. “I know in 20 years’ time for our customers that would be something we could stand behind. “I could see a future in it but I don’t see a future in the fully electric vehicle.” He said the government has “panicked and put everything into the electric car basket” when the “infrastructure is no where near where it should be”. ‘EVs are disposable’Stephen Mack Mr Mack said EVs “will never be classics like we had” Stephen Mack, chairman of the Comber Classic Car Club believes electric vehicles “have a pretty bad press”. Although Mr Mack shared how there are issues with electric cars such as the price, mileage, battery life, depreciation and appearance. “You couldn’t tell the difference of a car with a petrol or diesel engine, I would like to say the same about an electric car,” he said. “These EVs are disposable, they will never be classics like we had. “There’s no feel, there’s no sound, there’s no oil dripping out of it”. Judo Bank’s Warren Hogan says consumer recovery is under way so there’s no need to cut interest rates Judo Bank’s Warren Hogan says consumer recovery is under way so there’s no need to cut interest rates Financial markets reckon an interest rate cut next week is very likely, but Judo Bank’s Warren Hogan has warned the Reserve Bank should be cautious. Mr Hogan was optimistic Australia’s economy is in recovery mode after a year of growth that was close to the weakest level in decades. “Consumer recovery is well under way,” Mr Hogan said in a research note on Monday. He said retail spending growth had beaten market expectations in the final quarter of 2024. Manufacturing cost pressure was at its highest level in two years, the Judo Bank economist said. “With data on business conditions, consumer spending, employment, and wage pressures all highlighting the solid footing the *********** economy is on heading into 2025, the economic case calls for further caution from the RBA.” Markets predict a roughly 95 per cent chance the RBA will lower rates next Tuesday. That would be the first downward move since November 2020. But Westpac reckons inflation is set to tumble, aided by an easing of housing pressure on the east coast. The big four bank has tipped headline inflation will be as low as 2 per cent through the year to March. Core inflation would be 2.7 per cent. That would be good news for the RBA, which wants to be confident the core measure is headed back to the 2 to 3 per cent target range before easing rates. It comes after quarterly inflation data in late January showed strong signs inflation was coming under control. “The step down in core inflation was due to a moderation in housing costs as well as disinflation in clothing &footwear and deflation in durable goods,” Westpac senior economist Justin Smirk said. “This has resulted in a downward revision to our inflation forecasts. At June 2025, we now expect the CPI to print 1.7 per cent (for the year).” Source link #Judo #Banks #Warren #Hogan #consumer #recovery #cut #interest #rates Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

According to New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the country exported 14.6 billion New Zealand dollars ($8.26 billion) in goods and services to the United States — overtaking Australia to become New Zealand’s second-largest export market — and imported NZ$11.4 billion for the 12 months ending March 2024. That represented a trade balance of NZ$3.5 billion and a total trade value of NZ$25.8 billion, not adjusted for inflation. Willis described the relationship between the two nations as “one that works for both parties,” pointing out that New Zealand is also part of the “Five Eyes” intelligence alliance, which she said is “a foundation of a very strong strategic relationship.” The “Five Eyes” is an intelligence alliance comprising Canada, the United States, the U.K., Australia and New Zealand. When asked if that means the country will be able to avoid tariffs from Trump, Willis said that “decisions on tariffs are matters for the U.S. administration,” and New Zealand “would deal” with the situation if it arises. She is of the view that the New Zealand dollar will provide some buffers if tariffs are implemented, saying that a lower New Zealand dollar will assist the country’s exporters by making exports more competitive. The kiwi recently weakened to its lowest point in over two years against the U.S. dollar, trading at 0.5515 to the greenback on Feb. 3. Willis also acknowledged the country’s “significant current account deficit,” but added that the flexibility of the exchange rate will “allow balancing to occur.” Stock Chart IconStock chart icon Source link #Zealand #positive #U.S #trade #ties #tariff #threat #Minister Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  19. Restaurant Road Trips: Four Places Worth the Drive in Central Macedonia Restaurant Road Trips: Four Places Worth the Drive in Central Macedonia The cornerstone of a classic Greek outing is a destination restaurant. Combine that with a country drive and a fine pick of cultural destinations along the way – archaeological sites, Byzantine churches, wineries, and even a cave – and you have a great day out, local style. Here are four particularly cozy picks, perfect for a cold-weather outing. Ekeimeros © Panos Georgiadis Ekeimeros © Panos Georgiadis Ekeimeros – Braises from the fireplace One of the coziest restaurants you could hope to find, this gem is nestled in a meadow all by itself, far from civilization. A traditional wooden house stands alone, already promising with the inviting scent of wood smoke rising from its chimney. The wood-paneled dining room, with polished rafters high above, is filled with flowers and fruit and vegetables and everything beautiful. Hopefully you’ve arrived quite hungry. Nestled in the fireplace, covered cast-iron pots have been slowly simmering for hours – since the previous night, in fact. One holds wild boar, another beef cheeks, a third goat in tomatoes and wine to serve with hand–rolled pasta. There are more. Also, there’s sarmadakia – stuffed cabbage rolls, Pontian-style. This is true family cooking at its finest, with the talented yet humble Pelagia Margariti at the helm of the kitchen. Of Asia Minor heritage, she brings a rich legacy of flavors to the table. Her husband, Pelagia Margariti, is in charge of the grill, bringing his own Pontian roots into play. The recipes are handed down through their families, and those cast iron casseroles are his mother’s. Their children – Maria (a professionally trained chef), Kyriakos, Vagia, and Stavros – are all involved, guaranteeing an especially warm and personal experience. Ekeimeros © Panos Georgiadis Ekeimeros © Panos Georgiadis In addition to the slow-braised dishes in the fireplace, there is a host of meats for the grill, such as lamb chops and aged ribeye. There is also tiganiá – pan-cooked pork sautéed in a variety of savory sauces. And despite the emphasis on hearty meats, vegetarians will find plenty here: creative salads with fruits and nuts, a variety of inventive cheese dishes, stuffed mushrooms, and other pleasures. On the wine list are local selections including wines from Ktima Kappa – a relatively new vineyard started by a charming couple. (We visited Ekeimeros while on a wine trip, and we all really enjoyed them). Ekeimeros is just under an hour from Thessaloniki. Another 15 minutes will bring you to Vergina and the archaeological site and museum of Ancient Aigai, which includes the tomb of Phillip II in situ, as well as a spectacular new museum. It’s one of the finest archaeological experiences in Greece. Vergiotiko – Local beef in Little Jerusalem Veria is usually synonymous with peaches. The drive to Veria from Thessaloniki in springtime is a riot of blossoms. It’s also known for revani, a syrupy semolina cake. But Veria should also be known for beef; much of Greece’s excellent beef is raised in the region. Some of it was raised by the family of Nikos Malliaras; the chef and host at Vergiotiko knows quality beef. There’s a variety of mainly Greek-raised beef here – Greek angus, Greek blonde, and Greek-raised imported breeds. The chef has a close relationship with the suppliers and stocks the choicest cuts, which are then aged on site. Those who like top-quality grilled meats, prepared with skill, will be happy – these are extremely flavorful meats. They also have some wonderfully aromatic slow-cooked dishes, like beef cheeks or osso buco with trahana. The elegant but primal dining room suits the menu perfectly; the charming restaurant is in a cave. Veria’s 48 Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches have earned it the name “Little Jerusalem” – this was an important spiritual center from the 11th–14th centuries. The city’s Christian heritage is much older – St Paul preached here in the first century BCE – and a visit to the excellent Byzantine Museum rounds out the theme. Before leaving town, enjoy a coffee and a sweet slice of revani on the promenade overlooking the fertile plains. Vergiotiko: Thomaidou 2, Veria. Tel. Marigoula © Panos Georgiadis Marigoula © Panos Georgiadis Marigoula (Oenomageirio Marigoula) – High-style gastronomy with traditional tastes This wine–forward restaurant (an oenomageigio – “oeno” as in “oenophile” – is a place where they cook food to accompany wine) beautifully blends tradition and inventive contemporary cuisine. Chef and owner Sophoklis Iatzoglou grew up in his father’s very popular patisserie/cafe. Patrons there eventually started asking for home-style dishes from his mother, Kyria Marigoula. Iatzoglou learned at her side and took over in the ‘90s, making food that is rooted in respect for traditional Greek tastes and excellent local ingredients. Along the way, his travels inspired him to experiment, incorporating elements that reflect an international sensibility, while staying true to Greek tastes and ingredients. The platings are elegant, contemporary, never overdone. There are seasonal dishes of the day, based on artisanal products such as the heritage Greek breed ancient ****** pig, plus some favorite standards. Half portions are available, encouraging diners to explore a wide variety of dishes. The dishes are fantastic, the lighting lovely, the wine list really nice, and the antique-filled setting feels like an old “kafeneio.” Despite the restaurant’s accolades, Iatzoglou remains humble, ensuring that guests are treated to exceptional quality and a genuinely welcoming experience. Marigoula is an hour from Thessaloniki. Ktima Gerovassiliou – with the excellent Gerovassiliou Wine Museum – makes an excellent stop on the way. Make sure to take in the superb sculpture collection, featuring many pieces by notable Greek artists set among the vines. Also en route is the archaeological site of Ancient Olynthos, about 25 minutes from the restaurant. For something even older, visit the recently reopened Petralona Cave, a geological marvel and site of Paleolithic-era discoveries. It’s roughly midway between Ktima Gerovassiliou and Marigoula. Fanós Mezedopoleio Fanós Mezedopoleio Fanós Mezedopoleio – Home cooking, Asia Minor-style There are two villages called Fanós in northern Greece. The one that comes up on Google is the small, remote one in the Florina region. The Fanós that we’re referring to though is even smaller and more remote – just a ten-minute drive from the border crossing for North Macedonia, or about 2 km as the crow flies. A very narrow road, often practically deserted after Axioupoli, ascends through a landscape of rolling hills leading to this pocket-sized village, where the cozy restaurant is easy to spot. A somba (a traditional cast-iron wood-burning stove) warms the stylish space, which balances rustic charm with just the right amount of fancy – old wooden tables, heirloom embroidered tablecloths, vintage photographs and prints on the walls, and nice stemware. The sisters Yiota and Eftichia Papadopoulou run both Fanós mezedopoleia – this one in their village and the better-known branch in Thessaloniki. Though the Thessaloniki location – run byEftichia – gets more attention, it’s well worth the drive to their village for a taste of food that’s deeply rooted in tradition. Here, “back-to-the-roots” dishes are prepared with grace and refinement. The culinary heritage of Asia Minor shines in dishes like tou giaourtlou, kebab in zesty tomato sauce and yogurt; gözleme, a delicate savoury pie; and hünkar beğendi, tender stewed beef served over smoky eggplant puree with a rich béchamel sauce, one of the cuisine’s signature dishes. The food reflects the flavors of Politiki Kouzina (the cuisine of Constantinople), the dishes of Smyrne, and other recipes that the families of Fanos, including the sisters’ own, brought with them from Asia Minor. While Yiota humbly credits her sister Eftichia, named after their grandmother and the family’s culinary inspiration, as the true chef of the family, it’s hard to imagine a better plate of hünkar beğendi than the one Yiota serves. Fanós is just over an hour’s drive north of Thessaloniki. While in the area, don’t miss the Skra Waterfalls, about 15 km west of the village – take a scenic walk along the wooded path by the lake before enjoying lunch. Goumenissa, a charming wine town, makes an excellent detour on the way there or back, adding half an hour to the drive. There’s a fine plateia where you can enjoy a coffee beside the fountain, and there are also several wineries around Goumenissa to visit. Be sure to check opening hours or, better still, call in advance to arrange a tour and tasting. The local red grape, Negoska, is nearly unique to the area. Mezedopoleio Fanos: Fanós, Axioupolis. Tel. 21. Samsung’s transition from Android innovator to carrier store chaff Samsung’s transition from Android innovator to carrier store chaff The Galaxy S25+ is the most frustrating phone I’ve reviewed. As a tech journalist, I want to eviscerate Samsung for not giving people what they deserve from a $1,000 flagship phone in 2025. The company’s innovation moves at a glacial pace, and the Galaxy S25+ should be a significant improvement over previous generations. However, as much as I want to dig into Samsung, I must acknowledge that this is still a good smartphone. It’s not fair to bash the phone when plenty of users will get years of enjoyment from it. I’m going to evaluate the Galaxy S25+ for what it is. While I’ll acknowledge the areas where Samsung fell short compared to the competition, I am aware that the Galaxy S25+ will be the best choice for many people walking into their carrier store looking to pay $30 a month for their phone. s25-plus-square Samsung Galaxy S25+ 7.5/10 The Samsung Galaxy S25+ is the middle offering in the company’s lineup. It features a 6.7-inch AMOLED QHD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The new Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset powers it, and it has 12GB of RAM, and either 256 or 512GB of storage. Samsung didn’t increase the battery size for 2025, leaving it at 4,900mAh, although a more efficient chipset has resulted in better battery life. It’s thin and lightweight, at just 7.3mm and 190g, respectively. Pros & Cons Smooth software experience 7 years of One UI support No 50MP ultrawide upgrade Galaxy AI is still a question mark Price, specs, and availability The Samsung Galaxy S25+ is available through Samsung and Best Buy for $1,000. The base model includes 256GB of storage, while the 512GB variant costs an additional $120. It comes in various colors, such as Mint, Icy Blue, and Silver Shadow, although you’re doing it wrong if you don’t buy the Galaxy S25+ in Navy or Coral, a Samsung website exclusive. Those two colors are Samsung’s best in years, and the Navy looks fantastic on my review unit. The Galaxy S25+ comes unlocked for all major carriers, and I had no signal or connectivity issues testing it on AT&T. However, that’s only partial hyperbole, as Samsung carries the same design language throughout every device in its lineup, from the cheaper Galaxy A16 to the Galaxy S25 Ultra. It’s not accidental. Samsung crafted a premium, unoffensive device that appeals to the most people possible. Nothing about the phone sparks emotion, which is ideal when you want your product to blend in next to the iPhone and Pixel on carrier store shelves. The Galaxy S25+ is not all bland, and Samsung made some improvements for 2025. It’s noticeably thinner than its predecessors, at 7.3mm. This is the sweet spot for flat-framed phones, and the Galaxy S25+ has the best feel in the hand of any Samsung since the Galaxy S10+. It’s also lightweight, tipping the scales at 190g. I’m glad phone manufacturers have found a middle ground, proving devices can be thin and powerful without sacrificing thermal performance and weighing 230g. Back glass of the Samsung Galaxy S25+ The Galaxy S25+ has the usual appurtenances of fine living. Its front and back are protected by Gorilla Glass Armor 2, which Corning claims is four times more scratch-resistant than the competitors’ glass. I love the shift in focus away from shatter protection. It’ll still protect your phone from drops, but I’m more likely to suffer from micro-abrasions on the display than to launch my phone onto a marble surface. Nothing bothers me more than picking up my shiny new phone after a week, only to realize I have a surface scratch. It may not have the titanium frame of its more expensive sibling, but Samsung’s Aluminum Armor 2 on the Galaxy S25+ instills confidence the device won’t bend or suffer damage despite being 7.3mm thick. Samsung did the right thing by color-matching the frame to the phone. It adds something to the design and looks fantastic with the Navy and Coral variants. I wasn’t joking earlier. You’re doing yourself a disservice if you don’t take advantage of those colors. Phone manufacturers grew afraid of saturation, so I’m glad at least two vibrant colors made it through. Samsung Galaxy S25+ display being held against tree The Navy colorway isn’t the only vibrant aspect of the Galaxy S25+. Samsung reversed its recent trend of using screens with more natural tuning on its phones. Last year, the company gave me hope when it added a software slider to control the display vibrancy. Samsung has returned to form with the display on the Galaxy S25+. It’s a gorgeous 6.7-inch AMOLED QHD+ panel that refreshes at 120Hz. The anti-reflective glass has been improved since last year, making outdoor viewing easier. In addition, the Galaxy S25+ has excellent viewing angles, with little distortion off-axis. It’s an old-school stunner of a Samsung display, reminding me why I fell in love with the company’s screens. Other hardware and what’s in the box Side profile of the thin frame on the Galaxy S25+ I know Samsung isn’t the only guilty party, but its presentation and included extras are more barren than most. I understand the company wants to be eco-friendly, but the box looks like someone forgot to change a toner cartridge. I’m not asking Samsung to take out a rainforest because I spent $1,000 on a smartphone. Still, I’m sure there are eco-friendly ways to present better for people wanting a premium experience. I don’t think they are mutually exclusive. You’ll notice a slight improvement to the speakers over the Galaxy S24+. They don’t distort even at higher volumes, and the depth of sound is better this year. There is no upgrade in water resistance, as the Galaxy S25+ still carries an IP68 rating. Software and performanceSamsung focused on the wrong things Quick settings shade on the Samsung Galaxy S25+ If you buy a Galaxy S25+, don’t do it because of Galaxy AI. Samsung’s AI sales pitch sounds good, but the product is far from finished. Many features weren’t ready for prime time and aren’t exclusive to Samsung phones. Now Brief does nothing. I’ve been using it for two weeks, hoping that something would break through that feels generative. However, I’ve only been greeted by weather reports and news of violent crimes, not stories I’ve shown interest in. I jumped through hoops to set up Samsung Health and News, expecting Now Brief to pull in data and provide suggestions and curated news, but it’s done nothing. At this point, I would settle for Now Brief telling me that tomorrow will be cold, so I should wear a coat or suggest I bring an umbrella because rain is forecast for the afternoon. I’m not saying Now Brief is a lost cause, but Samsung has work to do before I count it as a valuable part of my user experience. Now Bar is more of a mixed bag. Google Maps integration functions well, displaying turn-by-turn navigation on the lock screen. I love that I can follow my favorite sports teams on the Now Bar, but the function doesn’t work correctly, with scores popping on and off the screen. I hope Samsung has a Day One patch planned because I’ve grown to enjoy this feature on my iOS devices. APIs have been released to developers, so we’ll see what third-party application support it receives, but I expect to see some innovative app integrations throughout this year. Now Bar settings on the Galaxy S25+ Samsung highlighted cross-app integration as a selling point of the Galaxy S25 series, but AI assistants are not as fast as I am at completing tasks. I had to parse queries to ensure Galaxy AI pulled from the correct app I wanted and then port the information to the proper calendar. It’s not an intuitive process, and while agentic assistants show promise, they are not a feature that should be the centerpiece of a new smartphone. It’s also a function I’ve seen perform as well on the Google Pixel 9 Pro and OnePlus 13 with Google Gemini, so I don’t see a competitive advantage for Samsung. Even though Galaxy AI needs polishing, One UI 7 has grown on me. Samsung’s software needed a fresh coat of paint, and iOS aesthetics aside, I like what the company has done. We finally have a vertical app drawer, something users have wanted for years. It also runs well, and Samsung’s software support over the last several years has been exemplary. Samsung promises seven generations of software support for the Galaxy S25+, which adds to the phone’s value regardless of whether you keep it for seven years. Pokemon Go on the Galaxy S25+ The Snapdragon 8 Elite powering the Galaxy S25+ is everything it’s advertised to be. It’s a powerful chipset that’s more battery-efficient than I thought. It chews through AAA mobile titles and intensive Android apps without difficulty. It powers much of the on-device AI functionality with photo and video editing, and I’m excited to see what desktop-class applications are developed to utilize this extra power. It’s also the saving grace of the Galaxy S25 lineup. The Snapdragon 8 Elite is where Samsung boxes out the Google Pixel 9 series in carrier stores. If you’re a hardcore user who wants more raw horsepower, especially for gaming, your choices are limited in the US. You can switch things up with a OnePlus 13, but carrier support becomes an issue, and you can’t finance one through them either. The Pixel 9 is fantastic, but Google’s focus isn’t benchmarks, and let’s face it, you’re not buying an iPhone. That leaves Samsung, and the company knows it. That’s why the design is meant not to offend anyone and why you see the company taking zero chances. The days of Windows Phone and BlackBerry are over, Huawei is nowhere to be found, and Motorola is barely holding it together. Competition matters, and Samsung doesn’t have any. Samsung Galaxy S25+ sitting on back of wooden deer I’m less disappointed by the lack of a 16GB variant of the S25+ than by the S25 Ultra’s, but I believe the device should have had more RAM. Samsung features AI heavily in its devices, and more RAM would ensure new Galaxy AI functions would come to our devices for longer and run better. It feels like planned obsolescence. While users won’t be limited by 12GB of RAM in 2025, you might notice your device bogged down in two or three years as more agentic AI features are added — just in time for you to go to your carrier store and start the cycle over again. Google and OnePlus offer 16GB of RAM to futureproof devices for the same price Samsung charges for the Galaxy S25+. I hope Samsung doesn’t use the lack of RAM as an excuse not to bring new features to the phone in two years, as we’ve seen that game attempted by Google last year. Word of Samsung DeX’s demise was exaggerated, as the fan-favorite feature is alive and well on the Galaxy S25+. CamerasImprovements on the inside Camera app on the Samsung Galaxy S25+ The cameras on the Galaxy S25+ are another mixed bag. I enjoy the photos I get from the primary 50MP f/1.8 sensor. Samsung’s computational software is improved, and the enhanced photo processing of the Snapdragon 8 Elite shines. The colors are fantastic, and I’ve noticed improved image clarity over previous Galaxy devices. Low-light photos are crisp with plenty of detail, even though motion capture is still problematic, as you’ll notice blurring. I’m pleased to report that Samsung’s notorious shutter lag seems to be gone. Even while taking nighttime shots, I noticed the shutter was snappy and responsive, without the delay we’re used to from previous generations. I thought photos of moving subjects would improve without shutter issues, but they didn’t. I don’t know if it’s a software issue or if Samsung improved the feedback when we press the shutter button, but it is still processing in the background. Flower photo shown on the Galaxy S25+ One area where AI impresses on the Galaxy S25+ is generative edits to photos. Object (and person) removal is better than ever, with remnants such as shadows and other artifacts accounted for and removed. AI enhancements boost video editing, allowing users to isolate individual audio elements and remove or enhance them as needed. It’s impressive and works well on the Galaxy S25+, which is ideal for parents worried about external noise ruining a cherished moment with their children. Like most other things about the Galaxy S25+, there’s a downside. The three cameras in the Galaxy S25+ are the same lenses used in the Galaxy S23+. I was sure we’d see new hardware this year, and I was frustrated when the S25 Ultra got a new 50MP ultrawide sensor only to see it not trickle down to the S25+. It feels insulting that for $1,000, Samsung didn’t deem S25+ owners worthy of new hardware. Camera array on the Galaxy S25+ While AI has improved images from the 50MP primary lens, you will notice a difference when you switch to the telephoto and ultrawide sensors. There’s a detectable downgrade in color and clarity, especially in low lighting, when images become noisy and soft. Samsung seems to be artificially gatekeeping new camera hardware and enticing users to pay more by confining it to the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Battery and chargingMore of the same Back of the Galaxy S25+ displayed against a tree I almost fell off my chair when Samsung said it would keep the battery sizes the same as last year. Then I gave the company the benefit of the doubt, thinking it must use silicon-carbide technology like OnePlus to get better performance from the same-sized cells. However, I was wrong. The Galaxy S25+ features the same 4,900mAh lithium-ion battery as last year’s model. The Snapdragon 8 Elite is a more efficient chipset, and I am getting better battery life than on the Galaxy S24+. However, it’s still limited compared to the similarly priced OnePlus 13, which has a larger 6,000mAh silicon-carbide battery. Both phones can last into a second day on a single charge, but my OnePlus 13 completes the entire day, while the Galaxy S25+ needs a charger by lunchtime. Charging speeds also need to improve. Samsung has been stuck with 45W charging for years while competitors overseas routinely double that speed. This makes a difference when you forget to plug in your phone or have only 30 minutes before you’re due somewhere. This feature is prevalent on other phones. Samsung needs to step up and add it to its own. CompetitionWhat else is out there? OnePlus 13 in blue sitting next to a Pusheen I mentioned the OnePlus 13 earlier, and I love it as an alternative to the Galaxy S25+. For the same price, you get more storage, more RAM, a ******* battery with newer technology, faster charging speeds, and an IP69 rating. It’s a monster, but I understand it’s not for everyone. Support isn’t available through all major carriers, and you can’t add one to your monthly bill for $30. If you’re not beholden to a particular ecosystem and know your carrier will support it, the OnePlus 13 is worth a look. I also like the Google Pixel 9 Pro, but it’s a different experience. Google focused on software and AI enhancements instead of raw power. The Pixel doesn’t offer better gaming performance, but it has more RAM and a versatile camera system. In addition, most of the AI features Samsung is boasting about for Galaxy AI will eventually make their way to Pixel phones. If you’re used to the power of a Samsung flagship, you might be frustrated with Google’s offerings. Should you buy it? I promised I’d be fair, and while it pains me to say it, the Galaxy S25+ is the best choice for millions of smartphone users. If you don’t like the smaller screen of the standard Galaxy S25, the S25+ is a better choice than the Ultra, allowing you to save money and get much of the same performance. Samsung did an excellent job narrowing down the features casual users look for, such as a fantastic display, solid battery life, and good photos, while leaving enough deficiencies below the surface to make a tech journalist lose sleep. I’m practical enough to know Samsung fans should pick up a Galaxy S25+ if they’re coming from an older device on a typical carrier upgrade cycle, but that doesn’t mean I give Samsung a gold star when I know the company is capable of doing much more. s25-plus-square Samsung Galaxy S25+ 7.5/10 The Samsung Galaxy S25+ is the middle offering in the company’s lineup. It features a 6.7-inch AMOLED QHD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The new Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset powers it, and it has 12GB of RAM, and either 256 or 512GB of storage. 23. Ecuador election ends in a ‘tie’ prompting run-off in April Ecuador election ends in a ‘tie’ prompting run-off in April Ione Wells South America correspondent Reuters The campaign was dominated by the incumbent, Daniel Noboa’s hard-line approach to Ecuador’s violent drug gangs Ecuador’s presidential election will go to a second round after a closely contested first-round result failed to produce an outright winner. The electoral authorities called it a “technical tie” after the incumbent centre-right Daniel Noboa and his main left-wing challenger Luisa Gonzalez received nearly identical percentages of the vote. The pair will now face a run-off in April. The result is far narrower than opinion polls predicted, indicating the second round could be harder to call. The narrow result also dashed the hopes of Noboa’s supporters, who had been buoyed by an early exit poll suggesting he might clinch victory outright. The president’s supporters gathered in Quito, waving flags, donning T-shirts with his image and holding life-size cardboard cut-outs of the incumbent president. These cut-outs, depicting Noboa in various outfits – from suits to tank tops and sunglasses – have become ubiquitous symbols across the country decorating front doors, apartment windows, and even car rooftops. Issues including security and energy were both high on the agenda going into the election Noboa’s presidency has been defined by his focus on tackling severe gang violence. He implemented emergency measures to deploy the military to streets and prisons to curb rising crime. Many of his supporters hope he will secure a mandate in the run-off to continue his security policies. “He’s helped us a lot, from when there was gang violence so bad that we couldn’t even go out,” said Fernanda Iza. The 45-year-old added: “The support of the military he’s introduced – their presence is already helping. “He has brought us a certain stability. There are many problems still pending, but I hope he continues with his plan.” Fernanda Iza (left) believes Daniel Noboa’s measures to tackle violent crime in Ecuador are working Juan Diego Escobar, 16, expressed optimism about Noboa’s chances. “I think the majority of people who voted for other candidates will prefer to vote for Daniel Noboa in the second round,” he said. “Noboa handles insecurity well. Crime is fairly well controlled. I think he will also improve the economy.” Miriam Naranjo said despite being the incumbent, Noboa represented “change”. She added: “We need the work that he has been doing so far to continue. It’s only been a short time. We were expecting a ******* margin, so we have to work to keep that support for our candidate.” Despite some successes, such as the capture of some major gang leaders and a slight reduction in prison violence, violent crime remains a major issue. Violent deaths fell in 2024 but stayed near record levels. In January 2025 alone 750 homicides were reported. Gonzalez – a protégé of former president Rafael Correa – has criticised Noboa for failing to deliver on key promises, such as boosting the economy, cutting fuel prices, and addressing violent crime. While she has proposed similar military and police operations to combat crime, her campaign has emphasised increased social spending in Ecuador’s most violent regions. His critics also accused him of a slow response to a severe drought that led to prolonged power cuts last year. Noboa also sparked controversy during the campaign by refusing to delegate his presidential duties to Vice President Verónica Abad, citing an electoral law loophole. This decision became part of a public spat between the two. Getty Images Some 14 million Ecuadorians voted this Sunday to elect the next president Luisa Gonzalez’s supporters see her as a chance for change. Gonzalo Cajas, 46, said: “Why is there crime? There is poverty. There is hunger. So there should be someone who is really aware of Ecuadorian workers so that the country moves forward.” Alejandra Tufiño, 42, added: “The country’s security is in pieces. I want change. I’m not saying that she’s going to solve it – but let’s see what happens if we give her a chance.” Some voters remain disillusioned with both candidates. Gabriela Cajo, 39, who backed a candidate from the party of assassinated 2023 presidential hopeful Fernando Villavicencio, expressed frustration with the lack of progress on crime. “Daniel Noboa represents fear, and we represent hope, change. We do not want a state of war, we want peace,” she said. “I think we are all annoyed with the electoral processes in the country, and the last thing we want is a second round and more expenditure of resources. “There will be tremendous polarisation. There will be a lot of opposition to whoever wins. Once again, we will have to choose who is the least worst.” Gabriela Cajo believes more can be done to tackle the high levels of violent crime in Ecuador Whoever is victorious in April will face significant challenges. Ecuador continues to grapple with rampant crime, as drug cartels battle for control of lucrative trafficking routes through its ports. Kidnappings and murders remain daily occurrences. The country is also struggling with high unemployment, a weak economy, and an energy crisis that caused blackouts of up to 14 hours last year. Noboa has pledged to address these issues by creating jobs, attracting investment, and increasing renewable energy production. Meanwhile, Gonzalez has emphasised the need for economic reform, social investment, and a stronger focus on tackling poverty.
