  1. stocks, news, data and earnings stocks, news, data and earnings European markets are set to start the week on a positive note, appearing to shrug off President Donald Trump’s latest tariff announcement. The U.K.’s FTSE 100 index is expected to open 12 points higher at 8,707, Germany’s DAX up 27 points at 21,788, France’s CAC up 13 points at 7,971 and Italy’s FTSE MIB 15 points higher at 37,172, according to data from IG. It remains to be seen whether European markets can evade negative sentiment that’s denting investor confidence elsewhere; Asia-Pacific markets fell overnight, tracking U.S. stocks futures that were lower as escalating trade tensions dampened sentiment. U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters Sunday that he was planning to announce a blanket 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports on Monday, according to Reuters. Last Friday, the three key U.S. indexes fell after Trump said he was planning reciprocal tariffs on trading partners. Major data releases this week include U.S. inflation data on Wednesday, ******* inflation and U.K. gross domestic product figures on Thursday and the latest quarterly European growth data on Friday. Earnings come from Mediobanca on Monday. Other reports to look out for on Monday include the Munich Security Report. 3. Brightstar nails more high-grade gold in WA drilling Brightstar nails more high-grade gold in WA drilling Brightstar Resources has nailed more high-grade gold from diamond drilling at its underground Second Fortune gold project near Laverton in Western Australia. Several stellar high-grade hits were returned, with assays of 0.42 metres grading 65.44 grams per tonne (g/t) from 164.33m, 1.16m going 30.36g/t from 101.6m and a 2.05m slice at 13.85g/t from 97.75m. The results were part of the company’s infill and extensional drilling program at Second Fortune, designed to provide necessary geological information for mine planning and scheduling. The company is also planning a mineral resource update in the first half of this year. Drilling comprised 4507m across 39 diamond holes and consisted of infill and extensional drilling as well as grade control and opportunistic service hole drilling. Most holes were on a 25m-by-25m spacing and will contribute to the expected upcoming resource upgrade. The Second Fortune ore body remains open at depth and confirms high-grade narrow-vein intercepts in multiple parallel veins, typically seen in drilling at the deposit, which sits at the southern end of the Laverton Tectonic zone. The renowned zone lies on the eastern margin of the Norseman-Wiluna Belt and is considered one of the world’s most prolific gold belts, with some estimates suggesting it holds up to 30 million ounces of the precious yellow metal. Management says the drilling at depth reinforces the geological consistency witnessed in operations across recent years at the deposit. Additionally, recent commencement of haulage of its ore to Genesis Minerals’ nearby Laverton mill is on track, with material expected to be processed in March. Brightstar began hauling its gold-bearing ore from its Laverton hub in WA to the nearby Laverton mill as part of an ore ***** agreement with ASX-listed goldie Genesis Minerals. The first gold pour is due in March and Brightstar has existing stockpiles containing an estimated 9000 ounces of gold available for haulage. The latest round of underground diamond drilling has continued to illustrate the consistency of the narrow-vein, high-grade gold at Second Fortune. The underground drilling program was designed to infill certain areas to increase confidence in the upcoming resource update, while also drilling extensional holes at the edges of the known ore body and the extents of the current mine plan. Rovira said the results provide a platform for effective mine planning at the Second Fortune deposit. Management originated an ore purchase agreement with Genesis, which allows for up to 500,000 tonnes of ore to be processed this year and in the first three months of 2026. Ore is expected to be sourced from the run-of-mine from its operating Second Fortune underground mine, existing mined stockpiles from its Lord Byron open pit operation at Jasper Hills, along with ore anticipated to be mined from its Fish underground project that is in the development stage. The Second Fortune mine contains a mineral resource of 165,000t at a stunning grade of 10.9g/t gold for 58,000 ounces. Stockpiles at Lord Byron comprise about 200,000t going 1g/t gold for 6000 ounces of the currently booming commodity. Development of the Fish underground mine is well-placed to contribute ore for processing, with material expected to be accessed within six weeks of cutting the underground portal and developing the mine decline. Fish also has a JORC-compliant resource with an estimate of 225,000t at a rock-solid 5.7g/t gold for 41,000 ounces. The company released a scoping study in March last year revealing a plan to mine 188,000t of ore within the measured and indicated categories of the resource at an expected 4.4g/t to produce 26,000 gold ounces over 13 months. Previous drilling at Second Fortune similarly produced a batch of results containing high-grade gold from relatively shallow depths, such as 2.76m at 7.37g/t from 96.15m, including 0.33m going 52.3g/t gold from the same depth, a 0.42m hit at 24.8g/t from 63.27m and a 0.3m slice grading 39.8g/t gold from 57.2m. The company is continuing to drill at its Sandstone operations and is pushing ahead an upcoming definitive feasibility study of its wider Laverton-Menzies hub development. It is also working on the near-term development for mining at its Jasper Hills project. Brightstar is in an envious position due to the excellent gold grades at its underground projects and its strategy to cash in on the hot commodity’s recent price run thanks to its ore purchase agreement with Genesis. Being hedge-free, it will derive the full benefit from today’s high prices and has no debt. Management believe the cash flow it expects to generate from the Genesis agreement will provide a significant boost to its growth plans. The company is also planning a wide-ranging 55,000m extensional and infill drill program. The continued rise in the *********** dollar gold price has astounded many within the gold industry and the latest price of US$2874 (A$4593) per ounce is making gold production very profitable for the bulk of companies with a decent resource and solid grades. Brightstar appears to be going from strength to strength, in step with a rising gold price boosted by a swag of central banks buying up the important metal against keen demand from hungry gold investors. 4. Canada and Philippines are in final negotiations for defense pact to boost joint military exercises Canada and Philippines are in final negotiations for defense pact to boost joint military exercises MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Canada and the Philippines are in the final stages of negotiating a key defense pact that would allow their forces to hold larger military drills, said the ********* ambassador to Manila while raising concerns over China’s “provocative and unlawful actions” in the region. Canada has been reinforcing its military presence i n the Indo-Pacific region and has committed to help promote the rule of law and expand trade and investment. That dovetails with Philippine efforts under President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to broaden defense ties with friendly countries to bolster his country’s external defense as it faces an increasingly assertive China in the disputed waters. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. ********* Ambassador David Hartman said Friday night that his country and the Philippines were “in the final stages of the negotiations of our status of forces visiting agreement that will enable us to have even more substantive participation in joint and multilateral training exercises and operations with the Philippines and allies here in the region.” Hartman spoke before Philippine national security officials, foreign ambassadors and defense attaches aboard the HMCS Ottawa, a Royal ********* Navy Halifax-class frigate on a port visit to Manila. The vessel will take part in a joint exercise off the Philippines next week, he said. The Philippine military has staged multinational patrols and drills since last year with counterparts from the U.S., Japan, France, Australia and Canada, including in the South China Sea, infuriating China. China claims virtually the entire sea passage, a key global trade route, and has deployed coast guard and naval fleets and other vessels to guard what it says is its territory. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, Taiwan also lay claims that clash with China’s and territorial confrontations have flared particularly between Beijing and Manila in the last two years. In August last year, Canada joined the United States, Australia and the Philippines in air and naval maneuvers to promote the rule of law and unhindered passage in the South China Sea. In an apparent response, China said it conducted air and sea combat patrols on the same day. Although no confrontations were reported, the Philippine military said three ******** navy ships tailed the four-nation maneuvers off the western coast of the Philippines. “We have been vocal in confronting the provocative and unlawful actions of the People’s Republic of China in the South China Sea and the West Philippine Sea,” Hartman said. “We will continue to do so.” Canada signed an agreement on defense cooperation with the Philippines last year. Another agreement signed in Ottawa in 2023 gave the Philippines access to data from Canada’s “Dark Vessel Detection System,” which harnesses satellite technology to track ******** vessels even if they switch off their location-transmitting devices. The Philippine coast guard has accused ******** coast guard ships and fishing vessels of switching off their location-transmitting devices to avoid detection and surveillance in the South China Sea. The Philippines has visiting forces agreements, which provide a legal framework for temporary visits of foreign troops and large- scale combat exercises, only with the United States and Australia. In July last year, the Philippines signed a similar accord with Japan, which still needs to be ratified by Japanese legislators. The Philippines is in separate talks over defense pacts with France and New Zealand. 6. Hundreds arrested in January ******** worker blitz, government says Hundreds arrested in January ******** worker blitz, government says Hundreds of migrants have been arrested since the start of this year as part of a ***-wide crackdown on ******** working, the government has said. As part of a blitz to kick off 2025, enforcement teams raided 828 premises including nail bars, car washes, and restaurants and made 609 arrests – a 73% increase from January 2024 and the highest figure for any January on record. Officials say many migrants are drawn in by false promises about their ability to live and work in the ***, which leads them to “risk their lives by crossing the Channel”. It comes as the government’s immigration bill is set to be debated again by MPs on Monday. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp has called it a “weak bill that won’t stop the boats”. A significant proportion of last month’s raids took place at restaurants, takeaways and cafes, the Home Office said. It also gave examples of arrests made in vape shops in Cheshire and a grocery warehouse in south London. Those arrested made the journey to the *** through a mix of routes, including by crossing the Channel and by overstaying legitimately-granted visas. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the government was boosting enforcement to “record levels” and that immigration rules “must be respected”. “For far too long, employers have been able to take on and exploit ******** migrants and too many people have been able to arrive and work illegally with no enforcement action ever taken,” she said. “Not only does this create a dangerous draw for people to risk their lives by crossing the Channel in a small boat, but it results in the abuse of vulnerable people, the immigration system and our economy.” From the start of the Labour government in July up to 31 January, 3,930 arrests were made over 5,424 visits by immigration enforcement officers. A total of 1,090 civil penalty notices were also issued, with employers facing a fine of up to £60,000 per worker if found liable. During the same *******, four of the “biggest return flights in the ***’s history” were also carried out, the Home Office said, returning more than 800 people. But Reform *** leader Nigel Farage described the new figures released by the government as feeble, compared with the numbers that had entered the country. Across the 31 days of January, there were 1,098 people who arrived in the *** illegally on small boats. The government said it launched a social media campaign in Vietnam in December and Albania in January discouraging people from making the journey to the ***. The adverts highlight stories from migrants who entered the *** illegally “only to face debt, exploitation and a life far from what they were promised”, the Home Office said. It comes as the government’s Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill is set to be debated in the House of Commons in its second reading. The bill aims to introduce a raft of new offences and counter terrororism-style powers to clamp down on people smugglers bringing migrants across the Channel. But Labour ministers have not provided a specific target on when a drop in small boat crossings could be expected. The Conservatives said they had put forward an amendment to the immigration bill in a bid to include their own immigration proposals: to double how long it takes migrants to get indefinite leave to remain and, after that, require them to wait five years rather than one before they can apply for citizenship. Philp added that “an effective removals deterrent is needed” to stop small boat crossings, something he said Labour had scrapped, a reference to the former government’s plan to send ******** migrants to Rwanda. 7. Chad Warner: Sydney star says his future is ‘up in the air’ as West Coast Eagles, Fremantle Dockers circle Chad Warner: Sydney star says his future is ‘up in the air’ as West Coast Eagles, Fremantle Dockers circle Out-of-contract Sydney superstar Chad Warner concedes his future is “all up in the air” to further fuel WA clubs’ hopes of luring him back to his home state next year. Both West Coast and Fremantle are interested in bringing the 23-year-old home once his contract expires at the end of this season. The 85-game midfielder did little to hose down speculation when he purchased a riverside home worth almost $2.9 million in Applecross earlier this year. And he provided even more hope for Eagles and Dockers fans in an interview on Monday, where he said he would not be rushed into making a decision and was instead focused on the season ahead. “I’m obviously out of contract and just enjoying Sydney at the moment, to be honest. I’m very open to everything. It’s obviously a big decision that I’ve got to make this year and I obviously want to make the right decisions, that’s why I’m very open-minded and chilled about it,” Warner told AFL.com.au. “It’s all up in the air. At the moment I just want to keep my options and my mind as open as it can be, to be honest. The one thing that I do know the most is that I love playing with these boys and love playing in Sydney so I don’t want to make the wrong decision either way. “I’m just playing the year and seeing how it goes.” Warner is still two years away from free agency, so the Eagles or Dockers would have to satisfy last year’s grand finalists if they were to recruit the All-***********. New Sydney coach and West Coast champion Dean Cox said the club was prepared for the “noise” around Warner’s contract situation this year. “I’ve been Chad’s line coach ever since he got to the footy club and I’m close with Chad having the WA connection. I’ve done that move and with all the interstate boys I try to make it as easy as possible,” Cox said. “The dialogue is constant between Chad and myself, I think it has to be. I want Chad to play his best footy this year, that’s what I want. What I can control is the team we put around Chad and that’s still challenging Chad to be the best Sydney Swans player he can be this year. “As we progress, we’ll continually have the dialogue about what happens going forward. He knows how much I want him to stay at the Swans but I am also a realist. People’s contracts and the calibre of player create a lot more noise and we’ll manage that throughout the process and both parties are aware of that.” Cox said he wasn’t concerned that Warner was assessing his options. “You need to realise that happens in football. For us, it’s about trying to make sure Chad sees this football club as the place to be in the short or long-term,” he said. “That’s the part we have to do. Our job is to provide a footy club, a team and an environment that he sees he can play his best footy in and also to be a part of a successful footy team.” Source link #Chad #Warner #Sydney #star #future #air #West #Coast #Eagles #Fremantle #Dockers #circle Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  8. Supreme Court that Trump helped shape could have the last word on his aggressive executive orders Supreme Court that Trump helped shape could have the last word on his aggressive executive orders WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump will need the Supreme Court, with three justices he appointed, to enable the most aggressive of the many actions he has taken in just the first few weeks of his second White House term. But even a conservative majority with a robust view of presidential power might balk at some of what the president wants to do. The court gave Trump major victories last year that helped clear away potential obstacles to his reelection, postponing his criminal trial in Washington, D.C., then affording immunity from prosecution for official actions. But Trump’s first term was marked by significant defeats — as well as some wins — at the court. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. “It will be an extraordinary test for the Roberts Court whether it’s willing to stand up for constitutional principles it has long embraced,” said Michael Waldman, the president of New York University’s Brennan Center and the author of a book that is critical of the court. “Some of the things we have seen are so blatantly unconstitutional that I am confident the court will stand up. Other things that align with the accumulation of the power of the presidency make me very nervous.” There’s no shortage of issues that could find a path to the nation’s highest court. Lower courts already have paused orders on birthright citizenship, a freeze on government grants and loans, and a buyout order for federal workers. Other lawsuits have been filed over restrictions on transgender people, limits on asylum-seekers, efforts to shutter USAID, Elon Musk and his team’s access to sensitive data and the firing of officials at independent federal agencies. Trump met with mixed success at the court in his first term. By a 5-4 vote, the justices upheld his ban on travel to the U.S. from several mostly ******* countries, but only after courts had blocked the first two versions of it. The same five conservative justices backed Trump’s firing of the head of the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau and cleared the way for the administration to tap billions of dollars in Pentagon funds to build sections of a border wall with Mexico, while a lawsuit over the money continued. At the same time, Chief Justice John Roberts joined with the court’s then-four justice liberal bloc to prevent Trump from ending the DACA program for immigrants who were brought here as children. The same five-justice majority also stopped the administration from including a question about citizenship on the 2020 census. Roberts also bluntly rebuked Trump for denouncing a judge who rejected his migrant asylum policy as an “Obama judge.” One big difference from the first Trump presidency is that there are just three liberal justices, after Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death in September 2020 allowed Trump to appoint a third justice, Amy Coney Barrett, in the final months of his term. She joined earlier Trump appointees, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. Birthright citizenship could offer a critical early test The issue that might be first in line this time is Trump’s order ending birthright citizenship for the children of parents who are in the U.S. illegally. The administration already has indicated it will appeal a judge’s ruling that has so far blocked it. Depending on how quickly the federal appeals court in San Francisco acts, an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court could arrive within weeks if Trump’s Justice Department wants to press courts to allow the order to take effect while the legal fight continues. While there is some support in legal circles for what Trump is trying to do, the more broadly held view among both liberal and conservative scholars is that this is a fight the president won’t win. “I’m exceedingly skeptical about there being any votes for the birthright citizenship executive order as written,” said Jonathan Adler, a law professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland who describes himself as right-of-center. Will Trump’s order to freeze federal spending stand? Trump’s now-paused effort to freeze federal spending and his call to shut down USAID also might meet resistance, even in front of the conservative court, though more modest reductions could fare better. “The court will be more skeptical, especially if the administration tries to completely unwind an agency that has been created by statute,” said Villanova University law professor Michael Moreland, who worked in the George W. Bush White House. The history of the travel ban, which the court eventually upheld after it was revised twice, is instructive, Adler said. “Make the broad announcement that’s a bit blunderbuss, a bit aggressive, that pushed the envelope. Then settle back to a more defensible space after pushback. It results in something more modest, but still dramatic,” he said. The Biden administration figured out a legally defensible way not to spend border wall money that Congress appropriated. “There’s a lot more play in the joints than people recognize,” Adler said. The president’s power to fire is on firmer ground Trump is on firmer ground in his firing of National Labor Relations Board member Gynne A. Wilcox and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission members Charlotte Burrows and Jocelyn Samuels, all Democrats. Wilcox already has sued, arguing that federal law protects her from being arbitrarily dismissed. But even her lawyers acknowledged in their filing that her lawsuit could tee up a Supreme Court challenge to a 90-year-old precedent that Roberts and the other conservatives already have narrowed. The case known as Humphrey’s Executor held that President Franklin Roosevelt could not arbitrarily fire a member of the Federal Trade Commission, a ruling that applied to other independent federal agencies as well. That ruling, though, has run into a legal theory embraced by conservatives that says the Constitution gives all executive power to the president, the one person who is accountable to the entire American electorate. In the CFPB case in 2020, Roberts brushed aside Justice Elena Kagan’s complaint that the court was removing “a measure of independence from political pressure.” Roberts left Humphrey’s Executor standing, but diminished, even as Justice Clarence Thomas and Gorsuch wrote that they would have gone ahead and overruled it. “If I had to speculate, I’d say it would be — if not outright overruled — at least severely constrained,” Moreland said. 13. New complaints against founder Richard White rattle WiseTech Global New complaints against founder Richard White rattle WiseTech Global WiseTech Global owner Richard White could be headed back to court, this time to face legal action brought by a former employer who is suing the billionaire, and his new wife, over workplace matters. The media reports come as the board of WiseTech confirms it is investigating two new complaints lodged against its founder and former chief executive. The *********** Financial Review said Caroline Heidemann’s Federal Court claim against Mr White, wife Zena Masser and the tech legend’s private investment company concerned alleged breaches of general protections. Ms Heidemann is a former WiseTech worker who was also later employed by Mr White’s RealWise Management, the newspaper said. The law suit comes just months after an independent probe launched by the logistics software giant cleared Mr White of bombshell allegations made against him, including bullying and undisclosed workplace relationships. The investigation found that Mr White’s behaviour could not be characterised as bullying or intimidating. It concluded he “has a direct approach and that from time to time is involved in robust and challenging discussions”. WiseTech on Monday said the latest complaints came from a staff member and a supplier to the company, but it did not disclose the nature of any allegations. “These are being considered in the ongoing board review,” it said. The tech entrepreneur stepped down as chief executive in October as intimate details of his private life were aired amid court proceedings. But he agreed to continue as a full-time consultant for a ******* of 10 years, focused on product and business development at the company he founded 30 years ago, on the same salary of $1 million a year. The board on Monday also revealed that it was still to settle on agreed terms for the new position. “The fuller details of this engagement, either via a consultancy agreement with Mr White’s company, or by amending the terms of his pre-existing employment contract … are still in the course of being agreed,” it said. “In the meantime, both the company and Mr White have been operating broadly in accordance with what was announced.” WiseTech was dogged by a series of media reports that alleged Mr White used his influence to gain ******* favours, paid for a multimillion-dollar house for an employee that he had been in a relationship with, and awarded a lucrative contract to a then-lover. In October, Mr White launched legal action to bankrupt his former alleged lover, wellness entrepreneur Linda Rogan, over a $90,000 bill for luxury furniture for a $13 million mansion he was said to have bought her in the ritzy waterfront suburb of Vaucluse in Sydney. Ms Rogan later alleged that Mr White had sought a ******* relationship with her in exchange for investing in her Bionik Wellness business. The case was discontinued in October. Media reports at the time also claimed Mr White had a lengthy relationship with a WiseTech employee and gave her a luxury waterfront mansion in Melbourne worth $7m. It was also alleged he had signed at least two non-disclosure agreements with former lovers and had been accused by a WiseTech director of intimidation and bullying. The AFR reported the new complaints were made by two women who accused Mr White of inappropriate conduct. The allegations were sent to both WiseTech’s board and Mr White through the women’s lawyers, the newspaper said. In response to the new complaints, Mr White told AFR he had been “open, trusting, generous and as a consequence, naive to how extreme wealth changes things”. “I was certainly not prepared for the numerous attempts to extract money from me that I have received over the past five years from people from all walks of life (both male and female),” he said. “I am now much more guarded, sceptical and prepared to defend myself against spurious claims.” WiseTech’s share were down 4.5 per cent near the close at $124.03. Mario Tama | Getty Images McDonald’s is set to report its fourth-quarter earnings before the bell on Monday. Here is what Wall Street analysts surveyed by LSEG are expecting the company to report: Earnings per share: $2.83 expectedRevenue: $6.44 billion expected The fast-food giant had a rocky quarter. Sales were picking up again after a summer slowdown, due to its value meal and the permanent addition of its Chicken Big Mac in early October. But several weeks into the quarter, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention linked a fatal E. coli outbreak to its Quarter Pounder burgers. McDonald’s switched suppliers for its slivered onions, the ingredient fingered as the likely culprit for the outbreak. In early December, the CDC declared the outbreak officially over. However, in the days following the news of the outbreak, traffic to McDonald’s U.S. restaurants fell steeply, particularly in the states affected. Customers have slowly been returning. Still, analysts are expecting the company’s U.S. same-store sales to fall 0.6% in the quarter, according to StreetAccount estimates. McDonald’s overall same-store sales are projected to have fallen 1%, which would mark the third straight quarter of same-store sales declines for the burger chain. Shares of McDonald’s have risen just 2% over the past year, raising its market cap to roughly $211 billion. 19. What DeepSeek’s Success Tells Us About China’s Ability to Nurture Talent What DeepSeek’s Success Tells Us About China’s Ability to Nurture Talent To many ********, DeepSeek’s success is a victory for China’s education system, proof that it equals that of the United States or has even surpassed it. The core team of developers and scientists behind DeepSeek, the ******** start-up that has jolted the A.I. world, all attended university in China, according to the company’s founder. That’s a contrast with many ******** tech companies, which have often sought talent educated abroad. As ******** commenters online basked in Americans’ shocked reactions, some pointed to the high number of science Ph.D.s that China produces annually. “DeepSeek’s success proves that our education is awesome,” read one blog post’s headline. Acclaim has even poured in from overseas. Pavel Durov, the founder of the messaging platform Telegram, said last month that fierce competition in ******** schools had fueled the country’s successes in artificial intelligence. “If the U.S. doesn’t reform its education system, it risks ceding tech leadership to China,” he wrote online. The reality is more complicated. Yes, China has invested heavily in education, especially in science and technology, which has helped nurture a significant pool of talent, key to its ambition of becoming a world leader in A.I. by 2023. But outside of the classroom, those graduates must also contend with obstacles that include a grinding corporate culture and the political whims of the ruling ********** Party. Under its current top leader, Xi Jinping, the party has emphasized control, rather than economic growth, and has been willing to crack down on tech firms it deems too influential. DeepSeek has managed to evade many of those pressures, in part because it kept a low profile and its founder declared his commitment to intellectual exploration, rather than quick profits. It remains to be seen, though, how long it can continue doing so. “There are many young, energetic and talented researchers and engineers inside China. I don’t think there’s a big gap in terms of education between China and the U.S. in that perspective, especially in A.I.,” said Yiran Chen, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Duke University. “But the constraint is really from other parts.” For many in China, the strength of its education system is closely tied to the nation’s global status. The government has invested heavily in higher education, and the number of university graduates each year, once minuscule, has grown more than 14-fold in the past two decades. Several ******** universities now rank among the world’s best. Still, for decades, China’s best and brightest students have gone abroad, and many have stayed there. By some metrics, that is starting to change. China produced more than four times as many STEM graduates in 2020 as the United States. Specifically in A.I., it has added more than 2,300 undergraduate programs since 2018, according to research by MacroPolo, a Chicago-based research group that studies China. By 2022, nearly half of the world’s top A.I. researchers came from ******** undergraduate institutions, as opposed to about 18 percent from American ones, MacroPolo found. And while the majority of those top researchers still work in the United States, a growing number are working in China. “You’re churning out all this talent over the last few years. They’ve got to go somewhere,” said Damien Ma, MacroPolo’s founder. Washington has also made it harder for ******** students in certain fields, including A.I., to obtain visas to the United States, citing national security concerns. “If they’re not going to go abroad, they’re going to start some company” or work for a ******** one, Mr. Ma said. Some have criticized China’s educational system as overly exam-oriented and stifling to creativity and innovation. The expansion of China’s A.I. education has been uneven, and not every program is producing top-tier talent, Mr. Ma acknowledged. But China’s top schools, such as Tsinghua University and Peking University, are world-class; many of DeepSeek’s employees studied there. The ******** government has also helped foster more robust ties between academia and enterprises than in the West, said Marina Zhang, a professor at the University of Technology Sydney who studies ******** innovation. It has poured money into research projects and encouraged academics to contribute to national A.I. initiatives. Yet government involvement is also one of the biggest potential threats to ******** innovation. Beijing has blessed the A.I. sector — for now. But in 2020, after deciding that it had too little control over major companies like Alibaba, it launched a sweeping, yearslong crackdown on the ******** tech industry. (DeepSeek’s founder, Liang Wenfeng, pivoted to A.I. from his previous focus on speculative trading, in part because of a separate government crackdown there.) The resulting layoffs at tech companies, combined with the uncertainty of the sector’s future, helped diminish the appeal of a sector that once attracted many of China’s top students. Record numbers of young people have opted instead to compete for civil service jobs, which are low-paying but stable. A.I. has been somewhat shielded from the brain drain so far, in part because of its political imprimatur, said Yanbo Wang, a professor at the University of Hong Kong who studies China’s tech entrepreneurship. He added that he expected more successful ******** A.I. start-ups to emerge soon, driven by young people. But it is impossible to say what China’s A.I. landscape would have looked like if Beijing had been more tolerant toward big tech companies in recent years, he added. “China’s long-term A.I. competitiveness hinges not only on its STEM education system, but also on its handling of private investors, entrepreneurs and for-profit companies,” he added. Even within private companies, employees often must contend with a focus on quick results. That has led to a widely accepted stereotype, including within China, that ******** engineers are better at improving on other people’s innovations than at coming up with their own. Mr. Liang, DeepSeek’s founder, has lamented as much, noting last year that “top talents in China are underestimated. Because there’s so little hard-core innovation happening at the societal level, they don’t have the opportunity to be recognized.” DeepSeek’s success may hinge as much on how it differed from other ******** tech companies as on how it shared their strengths. It was financed by the profits from its parent hedge fund. And Mr. Liang has described hiring humanities graduates in addition to computer scientists, in the spirit of fostering a freewheeling intellectual atmosphere. Since DeepSeek’s breakout success, some voices have urged more ******** firms to emulate its model. An online commentary from the ********** Party committee of Zhejiang Province, where DeepSeek has its headquarters, declared the need to “trust in young talent” and give leading companies “greater control over innovation resources.” But the best way for China to capitalize on its well-educated, ambitious A.I. work force may be for the government to get out of the way. “Innovation requires as little intervention and management as possible,” Mr. Liang said in another interview. “Innovation often comes by itself, not as something deliberately planned, let alone taught.” Siyi Zhao contributed research. 23. Star fast-tracks plans to mine 45,000-ounce WA gold deposit Star fast-tracks plans to mine 45,000-ounce WA gold deposit Riding the wave of soaring gold prices, Star Minerals has revealed plans to fast-track the development of its Tumblegum South gold project, 40 kilometres south of Meekatharra in Western Australia. Backed by a granted mining license, the company is pushing forward with environmental approvals at site while exploring third-party mining and toll treatment options. The project potentially stands to benefit from the huge surge in the price of the precious metal, which is trading at almost $4,600 per ounce, up $800 an ounce above the level Star used in a scoping study update 10 months ago. The study suggested the project could generate $19.6 million in free cash flow at an upper gold price estimate of $3800 per ounce. With current prices now 20 per cent higher than those assumptions, Star says there is clearly a compelling case for getting the shovels on the move as soon as possible to capture some of the significant additional upside potential. Star says the project’s environmental approvals, often the lengthiest step in the permitting process, have been prioritised. While navigating that labyrinth, the company says it is also deep in discussions with mining contractors to potentially lock in an ore processing contract at one of the three nearby third-party treatment plants within a 50km to 250km radius of the site. The company is also gearing up plans for exploration drilling later in the year, focusing on high-grade gold lodes previously spotted during a detailed desktop review of the deposit. Tumblegum South sits on a granted mining licence and hosts a total gold resource of 616,000 tonnes grading 2.28 grams per tonne (g/t) for a total of 45,000 ounces of gold. Within the total resource the deposit also includes 337,000t in the indicated category running at 2.52g/t for 27,000 ounces of gold. When the updated study was conducted in May last year it focused on various scenarios using an assumed gold price of between $3000 and $3800 per ounce. According to Perth-based Orelogy Consulting, which ran the numbers, a mining campaign over 18 months would initially ***** out between 11,800 and 15,900 ounces of gold. At a pre-mining cost from $700,000 to $1.5m, the development would generate an estimated $9.4m to $19.6m in surplus cash depending on processing scenarios. The recently reported updated scoping study demonstrated the value and viability of the Tumblegum South gold project over a broad range of gold price. Star is now taking the next steps to monetising this asset and more accurately assess various strategies to achieve this, including management contracts, *****, partial *****, or joint venture of the project. Star has also recently won shareholder approval to move full steam ahead on a joint venture agreement to earn 85pc of a flagship Cobra uranium project in the world-class Erongo district of Namibia. The project sits just 5km from the boundary of the world’s longest-running uranium operation, the Rossing mine, and is within spitting distance of the world-class Husab mine and Paladin Energy’s Langer Heinrich project. As it stands, the project has a non-JORC resource of about 15.6 million tonnes at a grade of 260 parts per million (ppm) for 9m pounds of uranium oxide. An initial six-hole program – due to kick off shortly – will investigate the strike potential of the deposit and twin some existing holes to bring the deposit up to JORC standard. Star’s move to build its presence in the uranium sector has come at a time when uranium prices have experienced a revival. The yellow metal is trading at more than US$72 (A$115) per pound, up more than 200pc from its US$22 (A$35) per pound lows a few years ago. Looking ahead to 2025 and 2026, Star appears to have an ambitious roadmap in place with dual drilling campaigns, in-depth feasibility studies, key contractor partnerships and a bold move towards full-scale mining operations all on the cards. 25. Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl half-time show was one big tease Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl half-time show was one big tease Mark Savage Music Correspondent Reuters Kendrick Lamar is the first rapper to headline the Super Bowl as a solo act “I want to play their favourite song… but you know they love to sue,” said Kendrick Lamar, a couple of minutes into his Super Bowl half-time show. Everyone knew what he was referring to. Not Like Us, his brutal takedown of rap rival Drake, was one of last year’s breakout hits, earning one billion streams on Spotify and five Grammy Awards, including song of the year. But there were questions over whether Lamar would play it – or even could play it – at the Super Bowl, after Drake filed a defamation lawsuit for lyrics that branded him a ******* predator, which he denies. Lamar leaned into the dilemma, teasing the song over and over during his set, before finally giving the audience what they wanted. When the song finally played, Kendrick self-censored the most contentious lyric, in which he calls Drake a “certified paedophile”. But he looked directly into the camera with a mischievous grin as he called out Drake’s name; and left intact the song’s notorious double-entendre: “Tryin’ to strike a chord and it’s probably A minor.” That lyric echoed around the Caesars Superdome in Louisiana, indicating that no amount of legal action could ever hope to diminish the song’s popularity. In playing it, Lamar was expected to have reached more than 120 million TV viewers who had tuned in to see the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Philadelphia Eagles. The performance was further heightened by the surprise appearance of tennis star Serena Williams, who performed the Crip Walk – a notorious Los Angeles dance move – as Lamar prowled the stage. Drake’s lawyers are suing Lamar’s record label Universal Music Group over the track, accusing it of trying to “create a viral hit” out of a song that made “false factual allegations” about the star. Getty Images Serena Williams was the only unannounced guest star during the set Sunday marked the first time that a solo rapper had headlined the Super Bowl, and Lamar brought an elaborate stage show, full of dancers, fireworks and special guests. But the rapper’s lyrics have always explored the contradictions between ego and self-doubt, and his Super Bowl set put that conflict in the spotlight. He performed on a giant noughts and crosses board, flipping between introspective deep cuts (typically staged inside the Xs) and crowd-pleasing chart hits (which took place in the Os). Actor Samuel L Jackson, dressed as Uncle Sam, acted as emcee – berating Lamar when he became too self-indulgent, and praising his duets with R&B singer SZA. “That’s what I’m talking about,” Jackson said, after the duo performed All The Stars, a ballad from the soundtrack to Marvel’s ****** Panther movie. “That’s what America wants, nice and calm.” Getty Images Kendrick arrived on stage atop a ****** Buick GNX car – the same model his father drove home from hospital after he was born in 1987 But whatever Lamar performed, the energy was electrifying. Early highlights included Humble and DNA, both taken from the rapper’s Pulitzer Prize-winning album DAMN, and whose tectonic beats rattled around the stadium. The set, which is available to watch on YouTube, also included Squabble Up, Man At The Garden and another Drake diss track, Euphoria. Unlike most Super Bowl performers, Lamar isn’t much of a mover, but he had a charismatic swagger as he walked in step with his dancers; and clever staging gave the show momentum – especially on nervy, angular tracks like Peekaboo. SZA also gave the set a lift, with supple vocals and improbably flexible choreography that helped soften Lamar’s edgier instincts. Getty Images SZA and Lamar have been frequent collaborators, appearing on each other’s albums since 2017 Reuters Samuel L Jackson was the ringleader of Lamar’s elaborate Super Bowl set Not Like Us was the undoubted climax, but Lamar took a victory lap on the bouncy West Coast anthem TV Off, where he boasted, “yeah, somebody gotta do it”. He was joined on stage by the song’s producer, Mustard, who clutched a football while sporting the world’s baggiest jeans – before Lamar pointed an imaginary remote control at the camera and intoned, “Game Over”. For fans, it was a powerful performance, full of Easter eggs – including a snippet of the unreleased song Bodies. Casual viewers might have agreed more with Samuel L Jackson’s plea for Lamar to keep it light; especially as some of his more densely-written lyrics were rendered unintelligible by the stadium’s cavernous echo. And it was noticeable that Lamar omitted to play his civil rights anthem Alright, in a year where the NFL chose to remove the phrase “end racism” from the end zone of the football field. The phrase had been present at the Super Bowl since 2020, amid the ****** Lives Matter protests – for which Alright had become the unofficial soundtrack. Many had expected Lamar to make a ******* statement, especially with President Donald Trump in attendance, but the star’s performance remained resolutely uncontroversial – unless, of course, your name is Drake. On-stage protestGetty Images A protester unveiled a flag during Not Like Us Nonetheless, Lamar’s show was sleek and streamlined – as many fans had expected, after audio of the backing track leaked on Thursday. The only interruption came at the climax of the 13-minute set, when a protester climbed on top of Lamar’s ****** Buick GNX car and unfurled a combined ************ and Sudanese flag, before being tackled by security officers. The NFL later said in a statement that the protester was part of the 400-member cast who took part in the show. Which songs did Kendrick Lamar play?Getty Images The career-spanning set crammed 11 songs into 13 minutes. Here’s what Kendrick played. The pair duetted on a remix of her single Bad Blood in 2015 – and fans hoped they might perform it live for the first time at the Super Bowl. In the end, Swift opted just to watch the show, along with other celebrity attendees including Paul McCartney, Stormzy, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, Ice Spice, Doechii, Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper and Winnie Harlow. Maybe it was for the best: Some reports suggested that Swift had been booed at the stadium, where almost 80% of fans supported the Philadelphia Eagles, rather than her boyfriend Travis Kelce’s team. Lady Gaga’s surprise performanceFox Lady Gaga taped her segment earlier in the week Before kick-off, Lady Gaga made a surprise appearance on Bourbon Street, in the middle of New Orleans’ historic French Quarter. The star, who played her own Super Bowl half-time show in 2017, played a touching rendition of her song Hold My Hand, honouring the victims of the New Year’s Day terror attack that claimed the lives of 14 people in the city. Gaga was surrounded by first responders as she played a ****** baby grand piano in the middle of the road. “Here on Bourbon Street, always the heart and soul of New Orleans, this year began with a terror attack that tried to shatter its spirit,” said former American footballer Michael Strahan during the pre-filmed segment. “But the resilience of New Orleans is matched by the resolve of our country.” Getty Images Jon Batiste became the first musician to perform the US National Anthem at the Super Bowl in front of a sitting president Musical performances before the game also included R&B artist Ledisi, who performed Lift Every Voice and Sing, often referred to as the ****** National anthem, joined by 125 youth choir members. Musician Troy Andrews, popularly known as Trombone Shorty, and Christian singer-songwriter Lauren Daigle played America the Beautiful – giving the track a feel-good New Orleans vibe.
