Holmfirth Army veteran proposes at Invictus Games in Canada
An Army veteran from West Yorkshire said he got his “gold medal moment” at the Invictus Games in Canada when he proposed to his girlfriend.
James Cairns, from Holmfirth, asked his partner of four years Hannah Wild to marry him at the opening of the Team *** wheelchair basketball match in Vancouver on Sunday, the Royal British Legion said.
Mr Cairns, 35, celebrated the moment she said “yes” with his team-mates, friends and the couple’s two-year-old son.
Mr Cairns, who lost his leg to a sniper bullet in Afghanistan, said it had taken “months of planning” to keep the secret.
Mr Cairns competes in the biathlon and swimming events as well as wheelchair basketball.
The seventh edition of the games, established by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, in 2014, began in Vancouver on Saturday.
The Duke was at the opening ceremony, which had a star-studded line-up of performers including Nelly Furtado, Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Katy Perry.
More than 500 competitors from 23 nations will take part in the games, which run until 16 February.
The games aim to “inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for those who have served their country”, the Royal British Legion said.
The Invictus Games were held in London in 2014, in Orlando in 2016, Toronto in 2017, Sydney in 2018, The Hague in 2022 and Dusseldorf in 2023.

T-Mobile is offering its Starlink satellite texting feature for free until July
T-Mobile is offering its Starlink satellite texting feature for free until July
T-Mobile’s Starlink satellite texting feature is now available in beta for anyone with a compatible iPhone or Android device to try out, the company announced in a Super Bowl ad. The new feature provides mobile 4G or 5G coverage in areas not covered by regular cell phone towers, and you can sign up for it even if you’re on another carrier like Verizon or AT&T.
The service will be available for free until July to approved beta testers, though limited spots are available. After that, customers of T-Mobile’s high-end offerings like the $180 Go5G Next plan will receive the feature at no cost. Other T-Mobile customers can add the service for $15 per month, or $10 per month if they sign up before the end of February. Users of other carriers will be charged $20 per month starting in July (T-Mobile didn’t explain exactly how that would work).
In August last year, T-Mobile and Elon Musk’s SpaceX announced a collaboration that would allow the carrier’s subscribers to connect to Starlink’s second-gen satellites for coverage even from the most remote locations. The service works with standard mobile phones, but only recent, compatible models including the Apple iPhone 14 series and later, all Google Pixel 9 models, the Samsung Galaxy S21 and later, Galaxy Flip3 and Fold3 or later and others.
If you have such a device, are enrolled in the T-Mobile Starlink beta and find yourself in an area of the US without regular cell phone coverage, you should be able to connect to a satellite and send someone a simple text message. Starlink support for voice calls and data is coming later, T-Mobile said.
T-Mobile and Starlink sent and received the first text messages using satellites back in January 2024. In the months that followed, the FCC had given them permission to enable satellite texting in certain locations so that people could stay connected in hurricane-hit areas. Now, anyone can try it, but it would be best to apply soon given the limited spots.

iPhone SE 4 Design Surfaces Online via Leaked Spigen Cover Listing
iPhone SE 4 Design Surfaces Online via Leaked Spigen Cover Listing
iPhone SE 4 is expected to debut this week, and Apple’s successor to the third-generation iPhone SE was recently spotted on a case manufacturer’s website, showing off the design of the handset. The upcoming iPhone SE 4 has been leaked on several occasions, providing us with details of its specifications, potential price range, and a purported design refresh. It is expected to arrive with an upgraded OLED screen, support for Face ID instead of Touch ID, and a larger battery.
iPhone SE 4 Design (Leaked)
A listing for the iPhone SE 4 was inadvertently published on case manufacturer Spigen’s website over the weekend, and the images of the handset seen in the product shots give us a clear look at the upcoming smartphone. Spigen has since removed the listing from its website, but not before users posted the images to Reddit.
The images of the upcoming smartphone published by the case manufacturer show the iPhone SE 4 bears a striking resemblance to the iPhone 14, from the front and the sides. It is seen with a display notch instead of the Dynamic Island, and has the same power and volume button arrangement as the iPhone 14.
However, the images of the case showing the left side suggest that the phone could arrive with an Action Button instead of the company’s mute switch, which was discontinued with the iPhone 15 Pro. There’s also no dedicated camera button on the handset, unlike the company’s latest handsets. There’s a single rear camera on the back, and it looks similar to the one on the iPhone SE model launched in 2022.
It’s worth noting that case manufacturers typically have access to the design of upcoming smartphones, allowing them to design and manufacture cases and covers in time for the launch of the handsets.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman recently reported that Apple is planning to introduce the successor to the iPhone SE (2022) this week, which means that Spigen’s leaked images might be our best look at the upcoming iPhone SE 4.
iPhone SE 4 Specifications (Expected)
The iPhone SE 4 is expected to arrive with several hardware upgrades over the third generation iPhone SE that was launched in 2022. It is expected to be powered by an A18 chip, like the iPhone 16, and could feature 8GB of RAM and support for Apple Intelligence.
Apple is also likely to upgrade the 4.7-inch LCD screen on the iPhone SE (2022) to a 6.1-inch OLED display. It is tipped to arrive with support for Face ID (instead of Touch ID), and a larger battery. The company will also have to swap its older Lightning port for a USB Type-C port in order to comply with common charger regulations in the EU.

Here are 5 signs that someone is secretly broke in America, and how they may apply to the people around you
Here are 5 signs that someone is secretly broke in America, and how they may apply to the people around you
Here are 5 simple signs that someone is secretly broke in America — do they apply to the people around you?
It’s natural to be curious about how well off — or not — our friends, neighbors and peers are. And for better or worse (but probably worse), social media makes it easy to be more involved in other people’s lives, which introduces questions about how wealthy, or cash strapped, they really are.
You may be inclined to assume that the folks you interact with on a regular basis are doing quite well financially. Yet, people have a way of appearing as though they have more money than they actually do.
With that in mind, here are a few signs that may indicate the people you know are actually broke — or that you’re headed down a similar path.
Some people get lucky and fall into high-paying jobs without having to put in much time or effort. Yet often, people with large salaries work hard to get there. But just because you work hard for your money doesn’t mean you’re actually saving it, or using it to get to a financially stable position.
One mistake people make all the time is figuring that because they earn a lot, they can afford to spend a lot. In reality, if you don’t keep any of your income, you’re going to end up broke.
A 2024 PYMNTS survey found that 48% of people earning more than $100,000 a year live paycheck to paycheck with no money in savings to fall back on. And the same holds true for 36% of people earning more than $200,000 a year.
If you’re fortunate enough to earn a six-figure salary, use it to better your financial situation. Aim to save 15% or more of your pay for retirement, and make sure you have an emergency fund with three to six months of expenses in savings at all times.
It’s okay to splurge on a quality item from time to time, especially if it’s something that helps you earn money, like a laptop you use for your job. But if you feel compelled to only buy brand names — and the fanciest ones out there — you’re likely to end up in a bad place financially.
During the third quarter of 2024, U.S. household debt increased by $147 billion, according to the Federal Reserve. And in that same quarter, mortgage, auto loan, HELOC and credit card balances all rose as well.
Story Continues
If you want to avoid becoming broke, don’t buy things — whether it’s a car, a house, or clothing — with the goal of showing off. Instead, buy things with the goal of addressing your needs as economically as possible.
Rather than get people’s respect, by being showy, you might end up becoming more alienated.
Read more: Rich, young Americans are ditching the stormy stock market — here are the alternative assets they’re banking on instead
People who are secretly broke tend to give into impulse purchases rather than plan and budget. And worse yet, they tend to use credit cards to fund impulse purchases, driving themselves even deeper into debt.
A 2024 Capital One Shopping report found that 89% of consumers have some history of impulse buying. So if you occasionally spring for a new outfit or gadget on a whim, you’re not alone.
But while the occasional impulse purchase may not hurt your finances that badly, consistently making impulsive purchases probably will. Rather than do that, get yourself onto a budget and think carefully about the things you’re willing to spend money on.
And in the context of online impulse purchases, you may want to employ the 24-hour rule. When you’re tempted to order something online, put it into your cart and wait 24 hours before completing the transaction. If you still want the item a day later and can justify its cost, buy it. If not, delete it from your cart.
There are certain tried and true methods of growing wealth over time. These include buying a home and seeing its value increase, investing in stocks and holding them for decades, and putting money into bonds for slower but stable returns.
Chasing get-rich-quick schemes, on the other hand, is a good way to end up with less money rather than more. And that sort of behavior could run the gamut from putting money into speculative investments to peddling an overpriced product in a multi-level marketing (MLM) setup.
Fundera research says that about one in 13 U.S. adults has participated in an MLM. But it also found that at least 50% of MLM participants drop out after one year.
The unfortunate reality is that a lot of the direct sales or MLM opportunities people come across have the potential to result in financial losses, making them quite risky.
Even investing in stocks on a short-term basis is a risky move, because it commonly takes time for stocks to gain value. So instead of trying to make a quick buck, focus on ways to slowly but consistently grow your net worth, such as contributing to your employer’s 401(k) every month and choosing smart investments within that account.
When you head out on a road trip without directions, you risk getting lost along the way. Similarly, if you go through life without a financial plan, you risk winding up broke — or if not broke, at the very least, shy of your money-related goals.
A 2024 Northwestern Mutual survey found that 55% of Americans don’t have a broad financial plan that allows them to balance near-term and long-term goals. If that’s the case, it’s a good idea to talk to a financial advisor and get on a better path.
An advisor can help you manage your income and work toward different objectives. They can also steer you away from mistakes that are likely to hurt your finances rather than help them.

Helldivers 2’s Anti-Tank Stratagem Proves to Be the Best One in the Game Thanks to It’s Flexible Usage
Helldivers 2’s Anti-Tank Stratagem Proves to Be the Best One in the Game Thanks to It’s Flexible Usage
The long-awaited Illuminate faction was the main attraction of the most recent Omens of Tyranny update for Helldivers 2, with developer Arrowhead Game Studios sneaking the Democracy-hating squaddies during The Game Awards. Another addition to this patch is an S-tier pick that can be used in base defense and automaton missions.

And this is the E/AT-12 Anti-Tank Emplacement, a call-in for fortification in the recently released Urban Legends Premium Warbond. The Helldivers have now discovered yet another wonderful method to use this weapon in an amazing way.
An epic combo of the Hellbomb and E/AT-12 Anti-Tank Stratagem in Helldivers 2
Players are now using the E/AT-12 Anti Tank Emplacement in a new way. | Credit: Arrowhead Game Studios.
The much-anticipated portable Hellbomb was first presented in the most recent Servants of Freedom Warbond. This explosive backpack would be used by regular Helldivers to run into a hot zone, drop it, and either sacrifice themselves for freedom or escape before the blast gets them. Veterans of Helldivers 2, however, have devised a method for safely dropping the portable Hellbomb onto a target.
The Helldivers 2 community has combined two of the game’s most potent stratagems to create a medieval siege weapon that grants freedom. This post by Fair-Albatross8520, which was discovered on the Helldivers subreddit, demonstrates how to use the E/AT-12 Anti-Tank Emplacement to launch the portable hellbomb.
Prior to calling in the AT Emplacement and dropping the primed hellbomb in the center of the beacon, you must first call in and put on the portable hellbomb. Your portable Hellbomb will be flung in the direction it is pointed in due to the way the AT Emplacement’s cannon unfolds. Naturally, timing and placement are crucial; otherwise, you’ll be adding to the list of bloopers.
The secret to success is improvisation, and this strategy demonstrates that you can hellbomb an enemy base without actually running into it. You even have an AT Emplacement in a handy location to catch any stragglers if you are successful. Super Earth ought to give this maneuver credit for its effectiveness.
Helldivers 2‘s Anti-Tank Emplacement is so good

Like many of the live-service PvE shooter’s tactics and weapons, Helldivers 2‘s Anti-Tank Emplacement is appropriately called. For instance, the Emplacement is a wonderful turret with a great deal of mobility, while anti-tank mines have proven a remarkable godsend against anything with substantial armor.
In the event that they need to aim down sights at foes from a distance, players can rotate around in their comfortable seats on the emplacement while holding a pair of binoculars in front of their helmet visors.
It is interesting to note that the Anti-Tank Emplacement is ineffective against grounded Warp Ships because its shells will neither pierce or destroy them, even if they manage to get past the energy shields of the Warp Ships.
But it is incredibly effective to fire at a Warp Ship that flies into the atmosphere and broadcasts a warp signal; in as few as three strikes, it can ****** down onto the planet. Harvesters are easily destroyed, but it’s much more difficult to attack smaller targets with an Emplacement, particularly when they’re as mobile as Illuminate Overseers.

5 things to know before the stock market opens Monday
5 things to know before the stock market opens Monday
Here are the most important news items that investors need to start their trading day:
1. A bumpy ride
Stock futures climbed Monday as investors digested the latest phase in a brewing global trade war. The three major U.S. averages dipped last week. The S&P 500 slipped by 0.2%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Composite both slid by 0.5%. Inflation, interest rates and the potential for tariffs to increase prices will be in focus this week. The consumer price index is due Wednesday, while the producer price index is set for Thursday. A handful of major companies will also report earnings, offering a read on consumer spending and how tariffs could affect their businesses. Follow live market updates.
2. The art of the steel
U.S. President Donald Trump holds a joint press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in the East Room at the White House in Washington, U.S., Feb. 7, 2025.

President Donald Trump escalated his global trade conflicts on Sunday, saying he would impose 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum. He did not say when he could impose the duties. While the duties could help U.S. metals companies like U.S. Steel and Nucor, they could also raise prices of some items for U.S. consumers and open up other products to retaliatory tariffs. The tariffs on metals were not the only major change the Trump administration was putting into motion over the weekend. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau employees were told to work remotely, shortly after acting CFPB Director Russell Vought told staff to suspend nearly all of the regulator’s activities. Democratic lawmakers and consumer advocates slammed the move, saying it could expose Americans to predatory practices by lenders.
3. McDonald’s underwhelms

Benoit Tessier | Reuters
McDonald’s posted slightly worse-than-expected sales in its fourth quarter, as an E. coli outbreak linked to its Quarter Pounder burgers hit its U.S. business. The company’s worldwide same-store sales climbed 0.4%, compared to the 1% decline Wall Street expected. But the burger giant’s U.S. business performed worse than expected: same-store sales fell 1.4%, compared with Wall Street’s estimate of a 0.6% drop. Traffic improved during the quarter, but customers spent slightly less than usual, as the chain relied on value meals to draw diners.
4. A flurry of earnings
McDonald’s isn’t the only massive company set to post results this week. Coca-Cola, CVS and Biogen are among the businesses reporting earnings. Here are they key results to watch:
5. Bird is the word

Discord introduces a feature to ignore rather than block users
Discord introduces a feature to ignore rather than block users
Social platform Discord announced a new feature today called Ignore. This allows a person to hide any new messages, DMs, server notifications, profiles and activity from selected users without alerting them. In unveiling the update, Discord noted that this type of softer approach to limiting interactions had been requested by its community. It’s a less stark way to tune out a person compared with blocking them.
In practice, DMs received from an Ignored person will appear in the inbox with an icon and a grayed-out name, so they are available if the ignorer chooses to look at them. The same applies to messages in a If somebody who chose to Ignore an account joins a voice or video chat where that ignored person is present, Discord will show a warning alerting them before they hop into the call.
Ignore can be activated from several places, including the drop-down menu that appears when clicking on an account’s avatar. A list of all ignored and blocked accounts is visible within the Content & Social tab of User Settings. You can stop ignoring a profile from that full list, from your Friends list or by going to the person’s profile. Discord has complete details about using the Ignore feature in a Help Center article for any additional information.

Apple’s AR smart glasses may not be dead, after all
Apple’s AR smart glasses may not be dead, after all
It seems Apple’s plans for making AR glasses are not dead after all, though it might take some time before the company puts them on the shelves. Bloomberg recently reported that Apple has shelved its AR smart glasses project, just like its doomed car project.
Now, the outlet claims that Apple has not entirely given up on that category. “I’m told that Apple’s long-term goal of standalone AR glasses remains intact, and the company will keep working on underlying technology — like screens and silicon — to help make such a device more feasible,” writes Mark Gurman in the latest edition of his PowerOn newsletter.
A person wearing the Meta Orion AR smart glasses. Meta
Apple’s rumored shelving of the smart glasses project seemed rather odd from the get-go, especially at a time when the form factor is finally catching up steam as a new form of computing. In fact, the smart glasses segment is quite vibrant, even more so than phones and laptops at a foundation level.
The likes of RayNeo, Xreal, and TCL are making glasses with a display unit integrated behind the main lens, opening the doors for immersive computing and content consumption. Razer and Amazon make Bluetooth-connected glasses without a display unit, but they connect with phones for handling calls and music playback.
The Even G1 smart glasses have optional clip-on gradient shades. Photo by Tracey Truly / Digital Trends
Even the more ambitious ideas are coming from upstarts. Take for example the Halliday Glasses, which ditch the conventional display unit concept and use an “invisible” optical module. Then we have the Even Realities G1 glasses, which integrate the optical and display lenses for an amazingly minimalist way to show information.
The big dogs are not too far behind. Meta’s Orion smart glasses, which were recently showcased by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, employ holographic glasses capable of overlaying 2D and 3D content in real-time atop a person’s world-view. Google has also given us glimpses of its wearable vision over the past couple of years.
Google’s AR smart glasses teaser from Google I/O 2022 event. Google
Apple’s own work with smart glasses, which was in development under the codename N107, was apparently no slouch either. “The N107 device had advanced projectors that could display information, images and video in the field of view for each eye, similar to augmented reality glasses being developed by Meta and others,” as per Bloomberg.
The internal development units of the smart glasses were also equipped with lenses that could automatically adjust their tint level. Apple will reportedly continue to work with the underlying tech stack and still aims to create a pair of compelling smart glasses that strike the right balance between comfort, firepower, and immersive capabilities.

3 Volatility ETFs to Help You Profit from Market Chaos
3 Volatility ETFs to Help You Profit from Market Chaos
Volatility refers to the extent of price fluctuations for a given asset or market. Historically, volatility has been inversely correlated with the stock market. When stock markets rally, volatility typically subsides as confidence returns. When stock prices decline, volatility tends to rise as investors become more risk-averse.
The most widely recognized measure of market volatility is the (the VIX). Often dubbed the “fear gauge” or “fear index,” the VIX reflects investor sentiment and anticipated market turbulence based on options prices. A high VIX reading, for example, above 25 or 30, generally signals heightened market fear and expectations of significant and rapid price swings. Conversely, a low VIX, often below 15 or 20, suggests more stable and calm prices.
Volatility Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) provide investors with exposure to market volatility primarily through VIX futures contracts, not by directly tracking the spot VIX index itself. Here are three volatility ETFs, each benchmarked to the S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Index, to help you navigate a turbulent market:
1. ProShares VIX Short-Term Futures ETF
Aiming to track the front-month VIX futures contracts, ProShares VIX Short-Term Futures ETF (NYSE:) offers direct exposure to short-term volatility. VIXY acts as a hedge against stock market downturns and can be used to express a short-term view on increasing market uncertainty. It provides a more straightforward, non-leveraged way to gain volatility exposure compared to UVXY.
However, VIXY’s value tends to decay over time due to the contango effect in VIX futures, making it more suitable for short-term trades rather than long-term holdings. Investors should be aware that during periods of low volatility, the ETF can experience consistent declines even without major market movements.
2. ProShares Ultra VIX Short-Term Futures ETF
Seeking to amplify daily volatility movements, the ProShares Ultra VIX Short-Term Futures ETF (NYSE:) provides 1.5x leveraged exposure to short-term VIX futures. This leverage magnifies both potential gains and losses, making UVXY a higher-risk instrument intended for aggressive, short-term bets on volatility spikes.
Short-term traders can potentially capitalize on intraday or multi-day volatility surges, profiting from sudden fear-driven selloffs, but it requires precise timing due to its rapid decay. The combination of leverage and the natural erosion from futures roll costs makes UVXY a highly speculative instrument best suited for active traders rather than passive investors.
3. ProShares Short VIX Short-Term Futures ETF
Designed to profit from declining volatility, ProShares Short VIX Short-Term Futures ETF (NYSE:) offers inverse (-0.5x) exposure to VIX futures. Investors who anticipate market stabilization or declining volatility can use SVXY as a way to profit during calm, bullish market conditions.
SVXY is primarily suited for experienced traders with a strong understanding of volatility products, as its performance can be highly unpredictable. Due to its inverse nature, prolonged volatility spikes or market crashes can lead to steep losses, making risk management essential for anyone considering this ETF.
Seizing Opportunity in Chaos: Volatility Investing in Practice
Given the challenges of volatility ETFs, successful volatility investing with VIX ETFs hinges on tactical, short-term trading. The key to potentially profiting from volatility ETFs lies in accurately anticipating and timing short-term spikes in market volatility. These spikes are often triggered by unforeseen events or periods of heightened market uncertainty.
Consider, for example, periods leading up to major economic announcements, geopolitical events, or during earnings seasons when unexpected corporate results can roil markets. Currently, ongoing geopolitical tensions and persistent inflation create a backdrop of market unease that could trigger volatility spikes.
If an investor anticipates such an increase in volatility, they might employ VIXY or UVXY to capitalize on the expected upward movement in the VIX. During periods of market stress, VIXY and UVXY can experience rapid price surges. For instance, during periods of past market volatility spikes, UVXY, with its leverage, has demonstrated the potential for solid gains in short periods.
Conversely, if an investor believes markets will remain calm or volatility will decline, SVXY offers a way to profit from this scenario. However, utilizing SVXY is a higher-risk strategy, as unexpected volatility spikes can lead to substantial and rapid losses for inverse volatility ETFs.
How to Navigate Volatility ETF Risks
Volatility ETFs, particularly leveraged and inverse products like UVXY and SVXY, are undeniably high-risk investments. Disciplined risk management is not just advisable but essential for anyone venturing into volatility ETF trading.
Small Position Sizes: Due to the potential for rapid value erosion and unexpected volatility spikes, especially with leveraged ETFs, positions in volatility ETFs should be kept small and represent only a minor portion of an overall portfolio.
Stop-Loss Orders: Active traders might consider utilizing stop-loss orders to limit potential losses, although the inherent volatility of these ETFs can make stop-loss execution challenging.
Continuous Monitoring: Given their short-term nature, volatility ETF positions require active and frequent monitoring.
Know Your Instrument: Before investing, thoroughly research and understand the intricacies of VIX futures, contango, time decay, and the specific ETFs being traded.
Tax Implications: Volatility ETFs issue the complex Schedule K-1 tax form.
Volatility ETFs are not suitable for all investors, particularly those with a beginner-level understanding of the market or those seeking long-term investment solutions. They offer a unique avenue to potentially profit from market chaos, but this potential reward is inextricably linked to significant and inherent risks that must be carefully considered and actively managed.

‘Ghost of Tsushima’ Can’t Hide Its Worst Design Flaw behind Its Drip That Has Aged like Milk
Ghost of Tsushima is an open-world game that offers almost everything a player wants from a single-player title: stunning visuals, gripping combat, and a world that feels alive in a way few games can replicate. It’s the kind of game that makes you want to stop and take in the scenery before charging into battle.

While it’s a visual and technical masterpiece, some fans feel like the game’s magic starts to fade and the gameplay becomes repetitive after a certain point. And here’s the real kicker: it starts to feel like a Ubisoft game. In fact, some fans believe Tsushima borrowed a page out of Ubisoft’s playbook.
Ghost of Tsushima offers a beautiful world but with a repetitive grind
Players are not that thrilled about the second act of the game. | Image Credit: Sucker Punch
Let’s get one thing straight: Ghost of Tsushima offers a standout world-building that’s nothing short of stunning, with immersive landscapes brimming with color, fauna, and dynamic weather. The combat system is fluid and the main protagonist constantly draws players to explore every corner of the island.
However, once the player hits that second act, it’s hard to ignore that all those beautiful landscapes are becoming little more than a backdrop to a string of repetitive tasks.
Enemies don’t change much, and missions become repetitive, offering little new beyond what you’ve already done. And this isn’t a dig just on Tsushima, it’s a major flaw many open-world games share, especially Ubisoft’s series like Assassin’s Creed (particularly Valhalla) and Far Cry.
What makes Tsushima a so-called Ubisoft game is that it starts to feel more like a checklist than an engaging adventure. Sure, the world is gorgeous and there’s a constant sense of progression, but the game becomes a grind as players go through the same types of activities, over and over.

Fans have been vocal about their discontent, not just with Tsushima, but with the broader trend in open-world games. They are lamenting how so many titles feel like they force them into endless tasks instead of rewarding true exploration and organic discovery.
Fans don’t want Ghost of Yōtei to repeat the same mistakes
Players are hoping Yōtei doesn’t repeat the same mistakes. | Image Credit: Sucker Punch
Ghost of Tsushima has been the talk of the gaming world for years, and for good reason. It pushed the boundaries in terms of visuals, combat, and open-world design. The game won praise from critics and fans alike for its atmosphere, and its world was one of the best.
Yet, even with all the buzz and flair, it can’t escape its shortcomings. No matter how stunning the world or how sleek and fluid the combat is, the repetitive nature of the second act (in terms of gameplay) tarnishes what could’ve been a flawless experience.
Now, with Ghost of Tsushima behind us, the gaming world eagerly awaits the sequel, Ghost of Yōtei, hoping that Sucker Punch will learn from the flaws of the first game. Players are hopeful that the studio will expand upon the world and narrative while avoiding the repetitive mistakes of its predecessor.
The hope is that Yōtei will offer a more diverse, engaging experience, one that keeps the world dynamic and ensures that progression feels meaningful, rather than like a tedious grind.
In the end, as players feel as they dive deeper into the game, the novelty fades, and they’re left with a grind that feels less fulfilling with every passing hour. The question remains: will the Ghost of Yōtei break free from the pitfalls of its predecessor? Only time will tell.

Former World of Warcraft Dev’s Latest Game Uses a Key Feature from Marvel Rivals to Address Stagnation in RPGs
Former World of Warcraft Dev’s Latest Game Uses a Key Feature from Marvel Rivals to Address Stagnation in RPGs
One of the biggest problems that role-playing games (RPGs) have is how balance and meta works. But does it have to be this way? Not according to Chris Kaleiki, a former World of Warcraft class designer and now head of Notorious Studios. He believes that games like Marvel Rivals are a good example of keeping the “meta” dynamic and interesting.
There is endless variety in Marvel Rivals. | Image Credit: NetEase Games
Kaleiki and Notorious Studios are going to try and solve this problem in their upcoming game Legacy: Steel & Sorcery. Taking inspiration from the success of other studios, Kaleiki hopes to address the problem of stagnation that has plagued RPGs for the longest time. But will he succeed?
Ex-World of Warcraft dev thinks NetEase got it right with Marvel Rivals
And he’s going to do something similar. | Image Credit: Notorious Studios
Kaleiki has seen firsthand during his work on World of Warcraft how the meta tends to stagnate in RPGs. Players often find and optimize the “best for any given situation” builds, making many other options feel redundant. He believes that the best way to combat this is by frequently changing the game’s balance so that we can have more chances to adapt.
During a recent interview with GamesRadar+, Kaleiki pointed to Marvel Rivals as an example of how to handle this challenge. NetEase designed team-up abilities in Rivals that change periodically to give players more character options. This brings variety to the game and is what Kaleiki wants to do with his upcoming title.
The only solution I think is you have to change the meta continually. If you look at Marvel Rivals, actually, it’s kind of interesting what NetEase did. They have teamups where two heroes get a bonus if they play with each other What they’re planning to do, which I think is smart, is that every season or every now and then they’ll just change them.
While Marvel Rivals does it with changing team-up abilities and seasonal buffs, Legacy: Steel & Sorcery takes a different approach. The game, which blends RPG elements with extraction shooter mechanics, plans to introduce rotating seasons where crafting materials and loot availability change over time. This system will influence which builds are most viable each season, as different resources will shape the gear that players can craft.
Players constantly have to re-evaluate and think through ‘what is best, what is the new meta?’ That’s the only thing you can really do. I think players like it and developers like it.
The game itself takes a unique approach to the RPG genre by blending elements of extraction shooters with fantasy role-playing mechanics. Unlike traditional MMORPGs that focus on vast, persistent worlds, Legacy: Steel & Sorcery offers shorter, high-stakes adventures where players must complete objectives and extract safely to keep their loot.
Legacy: Steel & Sorcery shouldn’t have the RPG meta issue
The devs have learned from past issues. | Image Credit: Notorious Studios
Legacy: Steel & Sorcery is getting its Early Access launch on February 12, 2025. The game will take a similar approach to Marvel Rivals in its gameplay. We will start with four playable classes, Warrior, Hunter, Rogue, and Priest, alongside one main map, Greenwood. Over time, new classes like Paladin and Wizard will be introduced, alongside additional maps and game mechanics.
The game’s Early Access ******* is expected to last at least 12 months. During this *******, Notorious Studios plans to introduce new maps, classes, and other content updates. We can expect to see the same kind of meta-shifting experience seen in Marvel Rivals but within an RPG. Kaleiki has the potential to solve one of the genre’s long-standing issues
Balancing a game around a shifting meta is no easy task, and Marvel Rivals players aren’t without concern. It’s likely that seasonal buffs will make long-term balance difficult to maintain. If a character receives a temporary buff in one season but loses it in the next, they might feel drastically weaker, which could very well be a problem.

Florida condo owners hammered by soaring insurance, dues, special assessments — but some are taking a stand
Florida condo owners hammered by soaring insurance, dues, special assessments — but some are taking a stand
‘I’ve paid about $20,000 in additional assessments’: Florida condo owners are getting hammered by skyrocketing insurance, dues, special assessments — but 1 small group is taking a stand
In St. Petersburg, Point Brittany condo communities are pushing back against rising HOA fees and special assessments. Many say the increasing costs are pricing them out of their homes, yet major repairs remain unaddressed.
“I’ve been here for about three years, and my assessments have doubled,” resident Diana Smith told WFLA NBC Channel 8 reporter Linnie Supall.
Smith has paid an extra $20,000 over two years for special assessments at her Point Brittany building, money meant to cover unexpected or major repairs that cannot be paid via the condo association’s reserve fund. Another resident said the financial strain has left them with little more than food and gas money.
At first, Point Brittany residents accepted the increased fees, believing they would fund critical repairs to the buildings, which date back to the 1970s. But some condo owners told WFLA that structural issues and other concerns — like a crumbling ceiling in an activity room — are not being addressed.
Now a small but increasingly vocal group believes the money is being mismanaged by their condo association.
They’ve complained to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), which is responsible for licensing and regulating businesses and ensuring real estate agents and businesses follow regulations.
According to WFLA, the department sent a letter to residents confirming that it would launch an investigation based on the complaints, with the following wording:
“Based upon an evaluation of the alleged statutory violation and the submitted documentation, the Division has determined that it will proceed by conducting an investigation specifically regarding potential violations.”
Read more: 82% of Americans are missing out on a savings account that pays over 10 times the national average
While condo residents struggle with rising costs and slow repairs, a broader trend may be at play. Homeowners Association (HOA) fees are rising nationwide, particularly on condos.
Realtor.com reports that HOA dues are more common for condos, with HOA fees levied on 83.8% of condos for ***** in 2024 compared to 33.6% of single-family homes. HOA fees on condos are also higher, averaging $375 per month compared to just $58 per month on a single family home.
Story Continues
Realtor.com notes that areas like St. Petersburg with a high concentration of beachfront condos are also likelier to be hit with HOA fees.
The very thing that makes beachfront properties desirable makes them vulnerable to natural disasters, which are also driving HOA fees, special assessments and insurance higher.
Florida home insurance premiums soared 60% between 2019 and 2023 in the wake of hurricanes and widespread flooding, according to Reuters.
Then there are tragedies due to structural issues in older condo developments, like the 2021 collapse of Champlain Towers in Surfside, Florida, which killed 98 people.
Investigation revealed that the building needed extensive repairs but the condo association lacked funds to complete them. In response, Florida has passed a law that condo associations must have enough set aside in reserve funds to cover major repairs as building components reach the end of their lifespan.
For example, if a roof will last 20 years but cost $20,000 to replace, the HOA must set aside $1,000 a year over 20 years to pay for it, money raised through special assessments. Add in the cost to replace aging HVAC systems, electrical components, plumbing, and other infrastructure, and the financial burden on condo owners increases significantly.
The repairs are not something condo associations can ignore. The Surfside tragedy led Florida lawmakers to mandate regular structural inspections for buildings over 30 years old and three stories tall or more. Condo associations must pay for any issues identified in these inspections.
As state regulations tighten, condo associations must balance safety compliance with financial feasibility — and communicate why fees are increasing with residents.

2 Stocks to Shield Your Portfolio from AI and Tech Froth
2 Stocks to Shield Your Portfolio from AI and Tech Froth
In the current state of the stock market, investors argue over whether valuations are too high. Some see historical indicators as signs of doom, while others feel that future earnings will justify prices. One interesting metric to look at is the forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of the overall S&P 500 Index. According to Yardeni Research, the figure sits at 22x. It is elevated when looking back over the past 25 years. It only reached similar levels in 2021 and leading up to the dot-com bubble at the start of this century. Over the past 10 years, the figure has averaged around 18x.
Another fear is the high concentration of value in the Magnificent Seven stocks. They account for around a third of the value of the . This leads to worries that the market is too reliant on the success of these companies, which are banking so much on winning AI. I’ll highlight two stocks below that can help hedge against the potential market froth that some see.
1. Philip Morris: Leading the Future of Nicotine
First is Philip Morris International (NYSE:). The company produces nicotine products, which remain essential purchases for many of its consumers. With AI driving much of the current market, this stock can stay protected from big declines resulting from a change in the tech landscape. Even without being a tech stock, Philip Morris is growing strongly and managed to put up impressive returns in 2024 of 34%. The company’s smoke-free nicotine products have been key to its success.
The company’s smoke-free product line includes two main verticals. Heated tobacco is the first. The company sold 136 billion heat sticks in 2024, which consumers use in its flagship IQOS device. This was a 13% increase from a year ago. The other vertical is nicotine pouches, led by its ZYN brand. The company sold 581 million ZYN canisters in 2024 and has a 66% market share in the United States. Next year, it looks to sell 800 million cans, a growth rate of 38%. Revenues grew by 7% in the quarter, and adjusted earnings per share rose 10%. In a legacy industry like tobacco, these figures are highly impressive.
Overall, Philip Morris is the clear leader in multiple key parts of the smoke-free tobacco market, the future of its industry. Traditionally, this industry can thrive, even when markets are down. The company’s leading position makes it a good play for the upside, and its industry provides downside protection from AI-related disruptions. It is trading at a forward P/E multiple of 21, nearly in line with the market. However, its tangible and impressive results justify this. Its nearly 4% dividend yield is also an extremely nice bonus.
2. Exxon Mobil: Cash Cow Working to Guard Against a Fall in Oil
Exxon Mobil (NYSE:) is the world’s largest and company, excluding Saudi Aramco, which remains primarily state-owned. The energy sector is certainly more cyclical than others, as demonstrated by the stock’s beta of nearly 0.9. However, Exxon Mobil still trades at a largely depressed forward P/E multiple compared to the overall market of 15x. Compared to the energy market, its valuation is only moderately above average. However, Exxon has some strong characteristics in its business that help keep the stock attractive.
First is its $55 billion in cash from operations, the highest among all oil and gas companies in the United States, Europe, and Latin America. Exxon also provides a strong balance of returning capital to its investors while investing back into the business. Its $24 billion in capital expenditure over the last 12 months is 24% higher than the closest company in this peer group, Shell (NYSE:). It also delivers a strong yield of nearly 8% when combining dividends and buybacks. It is doing this all while oil and gas prices are sitting moderately below their average over the past 20 years. Even if prices drop 26% to $55, the company can still pay its current dividend and fund all capital projects.
It would also accumulate nearly $100 billion in extra cash through 2030, which it could return to shareholders. It plans to have this ability by making investments to decrease its breakeven per barrel price to $30 by 2030. Overall, the company’s essential product, oil, isn’t going away anytime soon. It could provide a reasonable place to hide if fear starts to grip the market. Still, the price of oil and gas will have a big impact on the stock.

‘Magical’ Liverpool win for Plymouth Argyle fans
‘Magical’ Liverpool win for Plymouth Argyle fans
Plymouth Argyle fans are celebrating after their side beat Premier League leaders Liverpool in the FA Cup.
Comedian and Argyle fan Josh Widdicombe said: “Suddenly people want to talk about Plymouth Argyle for the first time in my life.”
Fan Jo Benwell said: “It was incredible, it was such a magical afternoon.”
The Pilgrims progressed to the fifth round of the competition after a 1-0 win at Home Park on Sunday. It is the first time the Devon side have beaten Liverpool since February 1956.
Ms Benwell said: “At the final whistle I just burst into tears, sharing that moment with my child, hoping that in 20 to 30 years she’ll still be talking about it.
“I couldn’t sleep [on Sunday night], just scrolled social media taking in reactions – it was great.”
Paul Sweet, a supporter from Cornwall, said: “It was absolutely fantastic, I think it’s up there with the best game I’ve seen Argyle play.
“We looked solid at the back and we do possess some danger going forward.
“I think they [Liverpool] possibly underestimated us, but you can’t take anything away from the players.
“They put absolutely everything into that, everything!”
Plymouth Argyle lost to Liverpool in 2017, following an away draw, which earnt them a replay at Home Park that year.
Speaking to the BBC after the game on Sunday, one fan said: “Eight years ago we went up to Liverpool, drew 0-0, we came back to here and they beat us 1-0.
“We’ve got victory at last.”
Another fan added: “I’m ecstatic, it’s amazing.”
