Johnson County breakfast restaurant will close. ‘We’re grateful to the community’ Johnson County breakfast restaurant will close. ‘We’re grateful to the community’ First Watch will close one of its Johnson County locations after choosing not to renew the lease. The breakfast restaurant of more than five years at 8180 W. 135th St. in Overland Park will stop serving customers Feb. 23. “As we make this transition, our employees are our #1 priority, and as such, they’ve been offered roles at nearby locations,” a spokesperson with First Watch wrote in a statement. “We’re grateful to the community for welcoming us for so many years, and look forward to serving our customers at our many other locations in the Kansas City area for years to come.” The company said that it was strictly a lease issue and no other Johnson County locations will close. The Florida-based chain — serving frittatas, French toast, pancakes, pressed juice and more — has more than a dozen restaurants in the area, including ones at 9102 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park and 15289 W. 119th St. in Olathe. The chain began in 1983 in Pacific Grove, California. Source link #Johnson #County #breakfast #restaurant #close #grateful #community Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Afghanistan women’s cricket: The refugee team who will not be silenced Afghanistan women’s cricket: The refugee team who will not be silenced Thousands of miles away, Mel Jones was sitting in quarantine in an *********** hotel during the Covid-19 pandemic when she received a message from an Indian journalist asking whether she had heard about the Afghan cricket team’s situation. The players had looked to the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) for assistance after the Taliban took over but received none. On their own, they were terrified under the rule of the hardline Islamist group. The journalist put Jones in touch with one of the players and she asked if there was anything she could do to help. The player replied to say that all her team-mates and the backroom staff needed to get out of Afghanistan. Jones, who won two World Cups with Australia, then went through her contact book and brought volunteers on board, including her friend Emma Staples, who used to work for Cricket Victoria, and Dr Catherine Ordway, who had helped to evacuate Afghan women footballers. Creating a tight network of people who could help, including on the ground in Afghanistan, they organised visas and transport to eventually get 120 people out of the country, mainly into Pakistan and then on military flights to Dubai. From there they flew to Melbourne or Canberra on commercial flights supported by the *********** government. “I don’t think I understood the enormity of what we were doing at the time,” Staples said. “We were told that we may not be able to save everyone. “For me, it was co-ordinating what we joke about now as being a backyard immigration service. It was filing out visa documents, passport documents and trying to transfer money to Afghanistan for the girls to purchase passports. “It was six weeks of gathering information from the family members, trying to get identification, but we just had this extraordinary spreadsheet that detailed everybody.” She said communication with the players was “really challenging” but “nothing Google Translate couldn’t fix”. “We giggle now about the language barrier, I got called different names such as ‘delicious’ and some other odd things,” Staples recalled with a smile. “It all happened so quickly for them that I don’t think they had time to think about what they’ve had to leave behind. I have no doubt that some of them are going through survivor’s guilt.” Jones, 52, who now works as a cricket broadcaster, said there were moments when it was not clear that the mission would succeed. “We had to fight the system when everyone kept saying it was impossible. Things were happening minute to minute,” Jones said. “Without sounding flippant, there were moments that felt like you were in a Jason Bourne movie,” she said, recalling trying to commentate on television while also messaging a player who was struggling to find the right car that would take her to safety. “She couldn’t find the car and was going up to different people and I had to warn her you can’t do that [for safety reasons], but then I had another commentary stint so I had to say ‘don’t do anything until I get back!’. “That was the fearful part for me, just making sure they made the right decisions.” Source link #Afghanistan #womens #cricket #refugee #team #silenced Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Stellar Blade Helped Push Shift Up To a Record-Breaking Year in 2024 Stellar Blade Helped Push Shift Up To a Record-Breaking Year in 2024 Stellar Blade was released in April 2024, emerging to a solid reception and strong sales on PlayStation 5. It has since remained in the minds of fans worldwide, with developer Shift Up plugging away to keep the content stream relatively well stoked. From a festive-themed update to a Nier crossover event, Stellar Blade hasn’t been forgotten just yet. In a recent financial update, Shift Up revealed that Stellar Blade was a key component in the company securing record-high revenue streams in 2024. The post-apocalyptic action title generated $43.2 million in royalties, and per the financial update, it ‘continues to sell well’. High Hopes Stellar Blade will be expanding from the confines of PlayStation this year, with a fresh version of the game landing on PC. Shift Up has already suggested that the game will sell even better on PC, giving the IP a new lease on life. In the last year that the game has been on the market, it has generated more than $40 million in royalties for Shift Up. At the same time, the company’s mainstay title, Goddess of Victory: Nikke, generated around $105.4 million, making up around 70% of the studio’s income. Before Stellar Blade hit the market, Shift Up started talking about its next project, which was later revealed to be dubbed ‘Project Witches’. It’s set to emerge in (or after) 2027, but nothing else is known about the game. In a world being driven down by layoffs and studio closures, Shift Up plans to expand, hiring around 100 people by the end of 2025. The future looks relatively bright for this South Korean studio, and I for one am excited to see what comes next from the team. North Korea vows to ‘punish provokers’ after US submarine docks in South North Korea vows to ‘punish provokers’ after US submarine docks in South North Korea has accused the US of engaging in a “hostile military act” and posing a “grave security threat” to the country by sending a nuclear submarine to a South Korean port. The USS Alexandria entered the Busan port on Monday for supplies and rest for its crew, South Korea’s defence ministry said, adding that the docking would allow the navies of the two countries to promote combined defence posture. “We express grave concern over the US dangerous hostile military act that can lead the acute military confrontation in the region around the Korean peninsula to an actual armed force conflict,” the North’s defence ministry said in a statement carried by the KCNA news agency. Pyongyang said the emergence of the submarine in the peninsula was a “clear expression of the US invariable hysteria for confrontation” against the East Asian country. The North’s armed forces would “unhesitatingly exercise the legitimate right to punish the provokers”, it said without elaborating further. The USS Alexandria, a fast attack submarine armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles, is part of the US Pacific Fleet. USS Alexandria docks at a naval base in Busan, South Korea (EPA) Temporary deployment of US military assets like aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines and bombers to South Korea is not unusual, but Washington has increased the frequency over the last year in a show of force against North Korea. Pyongyang often responds furiously to such deployments, describing them as proof of hostile intentions, and sometimes reacts with missile tests. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has upped his rhetoric against the US since Donald Trump took office last month for his second presidency. Mr Trump, on his part, has called Mr Kim a “smart guy” and said he would reach out to the Korean leader again after a summit between the two collapsed in 2019 over talks on sanctions relief. Pyongyang also criticised joint live-fire drills carried out by South Korean and US militaries at a firing range south of the militarised Korean border last week. The drills involved American strategic B-1B bombers. Earlier this month, the North said it would not tolerate any “provocation” by the US after secretary of state Marco Rubio called it a “rogue state” in an interview. EV Resources shares ***** amid China moly exports ban EV Resources shares ***** amid China moly exports ban EV Resources share price soared 133 per cent after China retaliated against United States tariffs by banning molybdenum exports, which amount to almost half the world’s molybdenum supply. The company has moved onto the front foot to champion its promising Parag porphyry project in Peru as a future supplier of molybdenum and copper. In a move that could have far-reaching implications for the global metals industry, China’s ban of the critical mineral together with an export ban on tungsten, tellurium and ruthenium could create a massive shortage of the metal down the line, unless reliable new sources can be unearthed to fill the gap. Molybdenum is extensively used as a strengthener in steel production and becomes even harder when subjected to high-pressure torsion. It is also used as a semiconductor in high-tech electronics due to its exceptional conductivity and ultra-high melting point. The silvery grey metal is currently trading on the London Metals Exchange at US$20.75 per pound (A$33.2/pound) or US$45,746 per tonne (A$73,200/t), making it almost five times more valuable than copper. Since the US produces just 12pc of the global molybdenum supply compared to China’s 45pc, American manufacturers are now scrambling to secure alternative sources. EV Resources says analysts predict that their reliance on producers in Latin America and other regions will increase dramatically – and the company thinks it may have just the asset. With 70 per cent ownership of the potentially massive molybdenum-rich copper Parag porphyry deposit in Peru, the company says it is well positioned to become a first responder. A total of 83 holes have been drilled at the project to date including a whopping 416-metre intersection from surface grading 0.47 per cent copper and 0.19pc molybdenum. Another 89.4m hit starting 6.5m from surface ran at 0.39pc copper and a massive 0.62pc molybdenum. High-grade molybdenum is generally considered to be ore containing metal concentrations above 0.2pc. Parag’s numbers so far are as high at 0.62pc, suggesting its results fit into the ultra-high-grade category. It was inevitable that molybdenum would sooner or later be subject to export restrictions from China, and as mines around the world age and deepen and grades deplete, it appears molybdenum will become a metal that takes on a strategic significance. Callaghan said with intersection widths of more than 400m from surface coupled with high copper grades enriched with massive amounts of molybdenum, Parag bears all the hallmarks of an economically viable project, which could become critical to future global supplies. Adding to its strategic advantage, the project has access to water and hydroelectric power and is positioned just two hours’ drive from Peru’s newly opened Chancay bulk port. Management appears to have compelling evidence to back up its claims saying the company has already been approached by multiple molybdenum roasters in the US and Latin America, reflecting a growing interest in alternative supply sources. As a result of these increased urgent enquiries, EV Resources is now exploring funding options for the next phase of drilling while it continues discussions with molybdenum processors in the Americas. The geopolitical landscape surrounding critical minerals is shifting and China’s latest move has highlighted just how exposed the West is to supply chain disruptions. For the Parag project and its owners this moment presents both a challenge and a lucrative opportunity in a changing global metals market. Is your ASX-listed company doing something interesting? UniCredit earnings Q4 2024 UniCredit earnings Q4 2024 The Commerzbank AG headquarters, in the financial district of Frankfurt, Germany, on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024. Emanuele Cremaschi | Getty Images News | Getty Images Italy’s second-largest lender UniCredit on Tuesday posted a fourth-quarter profit beat, raising shareholder returns amid market focus on the bank’s M&A overtures. Net profit attributable to the group came in at 1.969 billion euros ($2.03 billion) in the fourth quarter, compared with an analyst forecast of 1.803 billion euros, according to a LSEG-compiled consensus. Revenues reached 6 billion euros over the *******, versus analyst expectations of 5.898 billion euros. UniCredit has been at the epicenter of Italy’s nascent push for consolidation since the second half of last year, following its surprise build — and later increase — of a stake in Germany’s Commerzbank, and its takeover offer for domestic peer Banco BPM at the end of 2024. The Italian lender has so far rejected UniCredit’s opening play, but CEO Andrea Orcel told Bloomberg his opening bid for Banco BPM was only a “fair starting point.” The ******* administration has decried UniCredit’s “very aggressive, very opaque, untransparent” bid for Commerzbank, with Rome likewise resistant on the domestic front, amid broader government plans to form a third Italian banking titan alongside Intesa Saopaolo and UniCredit. Complicating the landscape of Italian dealmaking, UniCredit on Feb. 2 unveiled a 4.1% stake build in Italy’s top insurer Generali Group, but has stressed that “no strategic interest” motivates the venture. Critically, Italy operates under so-called golden powers legislation which permits Rome to intercede or set conditions on foreign and domestic corporate takeovers in key sectors such as defense, energy, communications and banking. Market participants are watching which of its twin-pronged suits UniCredit will commit to, or whether it will ambitiously keep both targets in sight. This breaking news story is being updated. Holy Holy: Aussie indie band announce hiatus after more than a decade, five albums and many live shows Holy Holy: Aussie indie band announce hiatus after more than a decade, five albums and many live shows Aussie indie band Holy Holy has announced they are going on a hiatus after more than 10 years together and putting out five albums. Producer and composer Oscar Dawson and songwriter Timothy Carroll will go on one last hurrah around the nation throughout May and June before they go their separate ways. Carroll said being a part of the band has been “one of the greatest honours of my life” but it was time to move on to the next phase of their lives. “The memories we made and the songs we wrote will stay with me forever. I’m so grateful to our team, our collaborators and most of all our audience for how much they have given us,” he said. “Next year, I’m moving to Sweden for a couple of years, and Oscar is living in London, so now feels like a good time to step away and work on other projects. “We’d like to give a special shout-out to Ryan Strathie, our incredible drummer and long-time collaborator, and Graham Ritchie, our bass player and spirit guide, two of the most talented musicians we’ve ever had the pleasure of playing with and two of the most gracious and lovely people too. “It’s been such a privilege working with them both.” Camera IconTim Carroll and Oscar Dawson of Holy Holy. Credit: Michelle Grace Hunder Holy Holy will play two back-to-back shows at Freo Social on May 10 and 11 as part of their A Grand Hiatus tour. The pair have promised a set list featuring songs spanning over a decade of their work, along with a lineup of special guests. Dawson said: “We’ve booked a run of shows at some of our favourite venues across the country and we can’t wait to share these songs with our fans one more time. “We’ve always loved playing live, hanging out with the support bands, and meeting the crowd after the shows to hear their stories. This is going to be a special run. The hardest part will be picking the set list.” Holy Holy leave fans with a catalogue of five albums, a double platinum single, one platinum and four gold singles, and over 150 million streams on Spotify. As to whether the band will perform again in the future, the answer is uncertain. “For now, having a break and getting lost in other projects is what feels right. We’re not sure what comes next, but we’ll always love the times we had in Holy Holy,” the duo said. The band will perform their final show in Brisbane on June 7 after hitting up various cities in the Eastern States. KPS looks to expand weapon detector use in middle, high schools KPS looks to expand weapon detector use in middle, high schools KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Walking through weapon detectors could be part of the morning routine for some Kalamazoo Public School students under a proposal by district leaders. In recent weeks, Superintendent Darrin Slade and other KPS leaders have been sharing the district’s current and safety and security plans and a possible change. Currently, school doors are locked when not in use and secured vestibules create space between visitors and classrooms. A proposed safety policy would have students walk through weapon detectors in middle and high schools during the school day. KPS superintendent shares policy on handling ICE agent visits The move also comes after a gun was taken from a student at Kalamazoo Central High School last year — the same campus where Monday’s meeting was held. Slade said it’s been a common practice at his previous districts. “It’s just an additional layer of security to make sure our kids are safe. I know a lot of principals, when I started, they talked about having them. Teachers also. Even parents,” said Slade. The detectors are similar to the ones used in the Lansing School District. Comstock Public Schools use similar equipment during sporting events. Chief of Campus Safety Don Webster said the district has used similar sporting events since 2018. The 11 detectors were bought last November but have only been used for special events. In the proposed policy, KPS security staff, a school’s principal and an assistant principal would help usher students through the process. With each middle and high school already equipped, Slade said there should be no additional costs. “We never make a decision in isolation, we like to involve our community partners and let them have a voice,” said the superintendent. After answering questions from the pool of more than 40 people in the auditorium, most parents were on board with the proposal. One was Tina Tabulog, who has a student who goes to Loy Norrix High School and another in elementary school. She said students are worried about the reality of school violence. “They see the school shootings all over the news. They worry when they go to school and when this came up I asked their opinion. They say ‘No, I would feel better, I would feel safer. I would feel not as hesitant to go to school,’” she said. Slade said the question will be brought up to the school board in either March or April. If passed, a test ******* would start near the end of the school year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. This Iconic MMO is Getting a New Class For The First Time Since 1997 This Iconic MMO is Getting a New Class For The First Time Since 1997 I’ve been playing Tibia since 2004 – but not consistently. I’ll dip in and out of the game around special events, but it remains my number one most-played game of all time simply because of how long I’ve been a user. Recently, Tibia’s developer, CipSoft, revealed that the game is getting a new character class – Monk – for the first time in almost thirty years. Those familiar with Tibia’s four-class paradigm are about to have their worlds shattered. Enter the Monk CipSoft has unveiled Monk, an all-new character class coming to Tibia later this year. This humble MMORPG was released in 1997 with four core character pillars: Knight, Sorcerer, Paladin, and Druid. That structure has remained fundamentally unchanged for almost thirty years – until now. With a very short trailer posted online, the CipSoft team revealed the Monk character class: This new Tibia vocation promises to be a capable hand-to-hand fighter that can use ‘mystical abilities’ to heal allies while pummeling enemies into dust. Here’s the full description of the new character type: The Monk will be a melee fighter capable of supporting and healing allies while using martial arts and mystical abilities to defeat enemies. The great truth seeker will have some very special features, such as harmony, virtues or serene. A Monk can be played in a very special way and, at the same time, is expected to integrate seamlessly into the Tibian world. In fact, one of our main goals was to ensure that the new vocation holds a unique position without undermining the value of others or rendering them obsolete. From February 25, CipSoft will be holding player tests for the Monk class, and later this year, the vocation will be permanently added to Tibia, which is still going strong after 28 years on the market. To learn more about the new Monk class, check out the full breakdown from CipSoft’s ‘Niadus’ on the Tibia website. Are you going to give the Monk a try in Tibia? Frozen Chicken Recalls That Affected Millions Frozen Chicken Recalls That Affected Millions The frozen chicken market in the U.S. is huge. In fact, research suggests that in 2023, it was worth more than $148 billion, and by 2032, it could exceed $240 billion. Grocery store freezers all over the country are stocked with frozen nuggets, tenders, patties, and many pre-prepared frozen meals with chicken, too. But while frozen chicken products often offer ease and convenience, sometimes they can be dangerous. As with many other industries — like ground beef and ice cream, for example— frozen chicken products are not immune from contamination with things you really don’t want in your dinner. We’re talking pieces of metal wire, hard bits of plastic, small rocks, and even bacteria, like listeria and salmonella. And on top of this, sometimes frozen chicken brands fail to declare when their products contain serious allergens, like wheat, egg, and shellfish. This all sounds a little scary, but it’s important to highlight that when these issues come to light, many companies and brands act very quickly to recall affected products from the market. Below, we’ve covered some of the biggest frozen chicken recalls of recent years — from small companies and industry giants alike. Read more: 8 Fast Food Chicken Tenders, Ranked From Worst To Best Perdue Foods Recalled More Than 167,000 Frozen Chicken Nuggets And Tenders As They May Contain Metal (2024) Plate of Perdue chicken tenders with fries and ketchup – Perdue Chicken / Facebook Perdue Foods is one of the biggest chicken suppliers in the U.S. Its parent company Perdue Farms —which was founded back in 1920 — is worth more than $10 billion. So it’s safe to say, this brand produces a heck of a lot of chicken products. But it is not immune from controversy. In the last few years, Perdue Farms has faced allegations of child labor violations, animal cruelty, and unhygienic conditions for animals. Plus, in 2024, it was forced to recall more than 167,000 of its frozen chicken nuggets and tenders over fears they could contain metal. At the time of the recall, the products had already been shipped nationwide. The issue came to light when Perdue Foods started to receive complaints from consumers that they had found metal wire inside of their nuggets and tenders. In a statement addressing the recall, Perdue’s senior vice president of food safety and quality, Jeff Shaw, said in a statement that the wire had been “inadvertently introduced into the manufacturing process.” Often, metal finds its way into food products when pieces of machinery used in production break off. If consumed, metal can pose a serious risk to health; it can cause internal injuries, dental injuries, and potentially lead to choking. Luckily, there were no injuries associated with the Perdue recall, which is now closed. ********* Food Importer Recalled More Than 2,000 Pounds Of Frozen Chicken Kebab Amid Listeria Fears (2024) Skillet of Al-Safa chicken kebab with salad – Al Safa Foods / Facebook Foreign objects, like metal, are a common reason for food recalls, but another common reason is microbial contamination. Sometimes, dangerous food-borne bacteria, like E.Coli and salmonella, can find its way into the food system and lead to illness. But they’re not alone, another leading cause of food-borne illness is listeria. This bacteria, which can lead to listeriosis — an infection that is often mild but can be serious and even fatal for vulnerable individuals — has led to a number of recalls in the food industry. In July 2024, for example, Al-Safa U.S. — a ********* importer of halal meat products — was forced to recall more than 2,000 pounds of frozen chicken kebab over fears they could contain Listeria (full name Listeria monocytogenes). There were no reports of illness associated with the now-closed recall. The bacteria was found during routine testing by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), which encouraged any consumers who had already bought the products to throw them away or return them to stores for a refund. Al-Safa US isn’t alone. Also in 2024, New York brand Boar’s Head recalled more than 7 million pounds of deli meat as it was contaminated with listeria. The outbreak led to 61 cases of illness and 10 deaths. Conagra Brands Recalled More Than 245,00 Pounds Of Frozen Chicken Strips Due To Possible Plastic Contamination (2023) Pile of chicken breast strips – Julie208/Shutterstock From whipped cream (via Reddi-Whip) to plant-based meat (via Gardein), Conagra Brands produces many different products. But in 2023, this food giant got into hot water over some chicken strips produced by frozen meal brand Banquet Foods, another of its subsidiaries. Some strips included in the product Banquet Chicken Strips Meal were found to contain small pieces of plastic. The FSIS discovered the problem when it saw a consumer complaint stating that they had received an injury in their mouth from consuming one of the contaminated products. Like metal, pieces of plastic sometimes find their way into food products during manufacturing. As well as potentially leading to oral harm, they are also a choking hazard. To try and reduce the risk of any further injuries, Conagra Brands issued a recall for more than 235,000 pounds of the frozen chicken meals. They encouraged anyone who had already purchased the products to throw them away or return them for a refund. There were no further reports of injuries associated with the products. This is not the first time Conagra Brands has had to recall products due to metal contamination. In 2021, the company voluntarily recalled Broccoli Tots made by Bird’s Eye amid concerns they contained metal fragments and small rocks. Before the recall was issued, the company was informed that two consumers had received dental injuries from consuming the product. Whitson’s Food Service Recalled More Than 8,700 Pounds Of Frozen Chicken Meals Due To Undeclared Egg (2023) Bowl of chicken Alfredo penne pasta – OlgaBombologna/Shutterstock Also in 2023, New York brand Whitson’s Food Service issued a recall for more than 8,700 frozen chicken Alfredo and chicken pasta meals as they contained eggs that had not been declared on the packaging. At the time of the recall, the frozen chicken meals from Whitson’s Food Service had been shipped to a number of institutions across New York and Pennsylvania, including schools. Shipping to schools was particularly problematic as egg is a common allergen for children in the U.S. In fact, it is the second most common allergen in young people after cow’s milk. It is also one of the most common foods to cause anaphylaxis in children. Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that causes the airways to narrow and the body to swell, which can be life-threatening. That said, most cases of egg allergies are mild. Symptoms can include everything from nasal congestion (think runny noses and sneezes) to feeling sick. One of the most common reactions to eggs, however, is hives and inflammation. There were no reports of serious reactions associated with the Whitson’s Food Service products. However, the FSIS was alerted to the undeclared allergen via a consumer complaint. Idaho Brand Recalled More Than 6,000 Frozen Crispy Chicken Meals Due To Undeclared Shellfish (2022) Pile of crispy chicken on a plate – Bhofack2/Getty Images Egg isn’t the only allergen that has led to frozen chicken recalls. In 2022, Idaho brand Mountain View Packaging recalled more than 6,000 frozen crispy chicken meals, sold under the brand name InnovAsian, as they contained shrimp that was not declared on the packaging. A type of shellfish, shrimp is a major allergen. In fact, shellfish is the most common allergen in the U.S., and likely affects around 2% of the population. Shellfish allergies are split into two categories: mollusks and bivalves, and crustaceans. Shrimp falls into the crustacean category, which is the most common cause of shellfish allergies. Like eggs, consuming shrimp if you have an allergy can lead to an allergic reaction. For many, reactions will be mild, but for others, this could mean anaphylaxis. As with Whitson’s Food Service, there were no serious reports of illness associated with the chicken meals, however the issue was first raised to the FISIS by a concerned consumer. Mountain View Packaging isn’t the first company to have to recall products due to undeclared shrimp. In 2020, Whole Foods Market recalled popcorn chicken products from 26 stores in California and Nevada as they were mislabeled and did not list shrimp on the packaging as an allergen. At the time of the recall, one person had reported an illness associated with the products. Foster Farms Recalled 148,000 Pounds Of Frozen Chicken Patties Over Concerns They May Contain Hard Pieces Of Plastic (2022) Burger with mayo and a chicken patty – em_concepts/Shutterstock Similar to Perdue Farms, Foster Farms — founded in 1939 — is a leading supplier of chicken in the U.S. In fact, it is the biggest processor of poultry in the state of California. But also like Perdue Farms, it is no stranger to controversy. In the last few years, it has faced allegations of ******** water use and animal cruelty, for example. And in 2022, it was also forced to issue a major recall due to concerns its products were contaminated with extraneous materials. Unlike with Perdue, the contaminant wasn’t metal wire, but hard pieces of plastic. At the time of the recall, which covered 148,000 pounds of frozen chicken patties, the products had already been shipped to multiple Costco distribution centers across the U.S. And once again, the problem was spotted not by Foster Farms, but by consumers who found the pieces of plastic embedded in their food. There were no reports of serious injury associated with this specific recall, but consumers have been injured by hard pieces of hidden plastic in food on other occasions. In 2023, for example, Kraft issued a major recall of its American cheese slices after six consumers reported gagging or choking on plastic in the food. British Columbia Company Recalls 880 Pounds Of Frozen Chicken Curry Amid Listeria Concerns (2022) Bowl of butter chicken curry – SYED IBAD RM/Shutterstock Also in 2022, British Columbia company Connoisseur’s Kitchen recalled nearly 900 pounds of frozen chicken curry products due to concerns they had been contaminated with listeria bacteria. The ********* company had already shipped the affected products, which were sold under the brand name Spice Mantra, to retailers in Alaska and Washington at the time of the recall. As mentioned above, consuming products contaminated with listeria can lead to serious illness in the form of listeriosis. Serious illness is rare, but it does happen. Every year in the U.S. around 1,600 people become infected with listeria and around 260 people die from that infection, per the CDC. The most at-risk individuals include newborn babies, people with weakened immune systems, and the elderly. Pregnant people are also at high risk from listeria. In fact, research suggests that people who are pregnant are 10 times more likely to fall ill with listeriosis, and pregnant Hispanic people are 24 times more likely. As well as illness, consuming listeria when pregnant can also increase the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, low birth weight in babies, and newborn health problems. Luckily, there were no reports of serious illness associated with the Connoisseur’s Kitchen recall. The bacteria was found when samples from the frozen chicken curries grew listeria in laboratory tests conducted by the FSIS. More Than 33,5000 Frozen Chicken And Vegetable Potstickers Were Recalled Due To Plastic Contamination (2021) Close-up of potstickers – The Image Party/Shutterstock In 2021, after complaints from consumers started surfacing, Californian brand Ajinomoto Foods recalled more than 33,5000 frozen chicken and vegetable potstickers sold under the brand name Ling Ling. The issue, according to customers who had already bought the products, was that some of the potstickers appeared to contain hard plastic. Plastic is a common cause of food recalls largely because hard pieces present an injury risk and a choking hazard. But plastic in our food is also a chronic health risk, too. Consuming the material — which is prolific in the food system thanks to microplastics — has been linked with an increased risk of ******* and reproductive health issues. Luckily, no consumers reported injuries or issues from accidentally consuming the products from Ajinomoto Foods. Anyone who had bought the products was encouraged to throw them away or return them to the store they bought them from for a refund. Serenade Foods Recalled More Than 59,000 Pounds Of Frozen Chicken Over Salmonella Fears (2021) Plate of stuffed chicken Kiev with salad – Connect Images/diana Miller/Getty Images In 2021, Indiana brand Serenade Foods recalled more than 59,000 pounds of frozen stuffed chicken products, sold through brands like Dutch Farms, Milford Valley, and Kirkwood, due to concerns it contained food borne bacteria. This time, it wasn’t listeria that was the culprit, but salmonella. At the time of the recall, the products had already been shipped to stores across the U.S. Salmonella is a leading cause of food-borne illness. In fact, cases of salmonella infection dwarf those of listeria. Every year in the U.S., the bacteria contributes to around 1.35 million illnesses. Around 26,500 of people affected will need to be hospitalized, and around 420 will die from the infection, notes the CDC. Unfortunately, the products from Serenade Foods did cause illness. The contamination came to light when public health organizations in the U.S., including the FSIS, began investigating cases of salmonellosis (the intestinal disease caused by salmonella) in eight different states. Eventually, the organizations traced the bacteria back to Serenade Foods. The symptoms of salmonellosis include diarrhea, cramps, and fever. For most, they will clear up in less than a week. Salmonella has been the cause of many major food recalls. In 2011, for example, meat giant Cargill was forced to recall a whopping 36 million pounds of ground turkey meat due to salmonella contamination. More recently, in 2024, more than 10,800 packs of eggs were recalled from Costco stores due to the bacteria. Conagra Brands Recalled More Than 276,000 Pounds Of Frozen Chicken And Turkey Over Concerns They Contained Small Rocks (2020) Plate of Healthy Choice power bowl Greek-style – healthychoicebrand / Instagram Plastic isn’t the only extraneous material that has snuck into products produced by Conagra Brands. In 2020, the company had to recall more than 276,000 of frozen chicken and turkey bowl products from its brand Healthy Choice over fears they contained small rocks. At the time of the recall, the bowls had already been shipped across the U.S. and to Canada. Again, the issue came to light when consumers started complaining of finding the rocks in their food. Conagra Brands isn’t the only company to be caught out by hidden rocks. In fact, small rocks are a common cause of recalls, as they often get into the food supply when raw ingredients are harvested from the ground, which, of course, contains rocks, gravel, and pebbles. Sometimes, bugs can make their way into food products this way, too. In the past, Trader Joe’s has also had to remove products from the shelves after consumers found rocks inside pre-prepared pilaf meals and cookies. Hidden rocks and plastic pieces aren’t the only reasons why Conagra Brands has had to issue recalls. In 2023, the food giant was forced to recall more than 2.5 million cans of meat and poultry due to a packaging defect that caused some of them to spoil and leak. Perdue Foods Recalled Nearly 500 Pounds Of Frozen Chicken Due To Undeclared Allergens (2019) Close-up of chicken tenders on a plate with fries – Liudmyla Chuhunova/Shutterstock The metal wire incident was not the first time Perdue Foods has had to recall products. In September 2019, the brand issued a recall for nearly 500 pounds of frozen chicken tenders because they contain undeclared wheat. Undeclared wheat is a serious problem for many consumers. It is one of the most common allergens in children, for example, and, as with egg and shrimp, consuming it unknowingly could lead to an allergic reaction (again, including, in rare cases, life-threatening anaphylaxis). But on top of this, wheat is also a risk for those with celiac disease. Research suggests around 1% of the U.S. population suffers from the disease, per Beyond Celiac, which is a chronic autoimmune condition triggered by gluten (one of the proteins found in wheat), with symptoms like diarrhea, fatigue, nerve damage, indigestion, constipation, and weight loss. Once again, Perdue Foods was alerted to the problem after the products had already been distributed — this time to retailers in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. There were no reports of serious reactions associated with the recall. For more food and drink goodness, join The Takeout’s newsletter. ‘I have to shower at the gym’ ‘I have to shower at the gym’ Adam Eley & Anna Collinson BBC News Investigations BBC Sam says she has walked to her gym 150 times in four years just to shower On a cold and wet evening, Sam Lewis walks to her local gym for a shower. It is a painful and slow journey, using a walking stick. The 34-year-old’s rheumatoid arthritis means she risks falling when climbing into the bath in her flat. Simple changes such as grab rails or a walk-in shower would make it safer, but two councils have failed to assess her in her rented homes. Disabled and elderly residents can be entitled to funding – whether homeowners, private renters or housing association tenants – for changes ranging from stairlifts and accessible bathrooms, to structural extensions. Funding housing adaptations can save money long-term by reducing the need for social care and alleviating the burden on the NHS. In England, 95% of routine adaptations should take no longer than six months – the government says – with all but the most complex jobs completed within nine months. But the average completion time has risen 18% over the past five years, figures obtained by the BBC show. It now stands at 357 days in areas of England, Wales and Northern Ireland where work is overseen by a single council, or in Northern Ireland’s case – the Housing Executive. Northern Ireland has the worst delays, with average adaptations taking nearly two-and-a-half years to complete. Scotland has a different funding model – so is not comparable in terms of data. ‘Very anxious about slipping’ Sam, a private renter in London, says she has never seen a fully accessible property available during online searches. The three flats she has rented have all had showers over baths. But when her condition is at its worst, her legs are too stiff to lift over the side. “I feel very anxious about slipping,” says Sam, who has previously sustained injuries from falls. If she cannot climb into the bath, but can manage the walk, Sam showers at her local gym. She says she has made the journey just to shower 150 times in four years. “It has a really negative impact on your self-image and your time,” she says. It is more than four years since she says she first applied for help, while in her first rental. Councils should carry out a “person-centred” assessment to identify whether individuals qualify. Landlords cannot refuse an adaptation without good reason. Without the adaptations, Sam worries her debilitative condition will become worse, more quickly. This would make staying in work increasingly difficult. There is a push by the government to get disabled people into employment, she says, but it feels like “no-one’s there to help” reduce the barriers. Claire Claire and Emilia’s home needs an extension to provide a downstairs bedroom and shower room The system is under strain, say housing adaptation experts and councils. Demand will only intensify in the coming years – they say – with the elderly population growing and an already apparent rise in complex cases involving children with special needs. There are still cases ongoing after five years or more in at least 21 local council areas of England and Wales – the BBC has found. Some 240 of 317 authorities responded to our Freedom of Information requests. In Staffordshire, seven-year-old Emilia has a rare genetic condition called PTEN hamartoma tumour syndrome. She has a learning disability, hypermobility, is doubly incontinent, and is more susceptible to cancers. If she climbed the stairs alone, to reach the bathroom or her bedroom, she would fall. Her mum Claire has damage to her spine, yet has to prop her daughter up with every step – risking paralysis if she bears too much weight. “I’m always frightened [if my back gives way] that we’re going to end down at the bottom of the stairs,” she says. Claire’s spinal injury means she isn’t able to help Emilia into a stairlift and so, in July 2022, the family – who are Housing Association tenants – were assessed as requiring an extension for a downstairs bedroom and shower room. Claire Building work is due to begin at Claire and Emilia’s home “Months and months went by when nobody [at the council] would answer the phone,” says Claire. The maximum amount councils can provide under the Disabled Facilities Grant in England, set by government, is £30,000. This is means-tested for adults, but not for children, and is currently under review. In Claire and Emilia’s case, the estimated cost of the extension is £60,000, which they believe caused the delays. “It’s all about money,” she says. If councils have enough money in their home adaptations budget they can choose to provide extra funding, but not all do. Social services can provide financial assistance too. Two-and-a-half years on, building work is set to begin soon. Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council said this was a “complex case” and that it had needed to “resolve additional funding and get the necessary permissions to extend the property”. It says it is working to reduce delays. Other councils are taking steps too. In Gloucestershire, NHS occupational therapist Neil Withnell is working with six local authorities to speed up cases – training additional staff for assessments and providing extra funding for people on lower incomes. Adaptations, he says, can be “life-changing”. ‘Quietly positive’ England’s adaption system is now being expanded, increasing by £86m to £711m, aimed at allowing 7,800 more people to access support. But the Local Government Association, which speaks for local councils, says the extra funding “does not tackle the underlying issues”, amid rising demand, a shortage of occupational therapists to carry out assessments and wider funding pressures. The government told the BBC that while “many councils” in England are meeting legal requirements, “delays are unacceptable”. Disability campaigners say the government must now take action to help private tenants, like Sam. Ten councils did not complete a single adaptation for a private renter last year, data obtained by the BBC has found. Official figures show 16% of working-age disabled people live in privately-rented homes. One of Sam’s previous local authorities, Ealing, carried out more than 1,300 home adaptations between April 2019 and March 2023, yet only three were for private tenants. “I’m not surprised at all” says Sam, who believes many will fear being evicted by a landlord for even asking for an adaptation. The government says its forthcoming Renters’ Rights Bill in England will allow tenants to challenge landlords who refuse adaptations without fear of retaliatory eviction. Ealing Council said “all Disabled Facilities Grant applications are assessed on merit and eligibility”. Having recently moved to a new area, Sam is applying for an adaptation for a third time. The council have been in touch. “I’m feeling quietly positive,” she says. Source link #shower #gym Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Unlike Elden Ring, Lies of P Isn’t Difficult But Had “diverse and colorful combat mechanisms” to Compensate Unlike Elden Ring, Lies of P Isn’t Difficult But Had “diverse and colorful combat mechanisms” to Compensate Lies of P was a surprise entry to the Soulslike genre but it had a unique take on it. Neowiz Games and Round8 Studio brought us the classic Pinocchio tale mixed with steampunk aesthetics with intense action and it was a game that felt fresh and fun. However, according to the game’s devs, the plan was never to challenge Elden Ring. The game worked because it was different. | Image Credit: NEOWIZ Punishing difficulty is the identity of many Soulslikes games, including FromSoftware’s Elden Ring. But Lies of P opted for a more accessible experience with the idea that difficulty isn’t the defining factor of the genre. And we have to say, it worked. The game was a success, and now we’re all ready for the DLC and a potential sequel. Lies of P was a success because it was different from Elden Ring The game wasn’t designed to be like other Soulslikes. | Image Credit: FromSoftware When Elden Ring launched in 2022, it was a big deal because it changed the Soulslike formula by taking it to an open-world format. While many of us gamers were skeptical about this at the time, it was a critical and financial success. The game has sold over 28 million copies as of September 2024 and it’s only going to sell more. Namco Bandai confirmed Elden Ring has sold over 28.6 million copies worldwide as of September 2024. In June 2024, they last reported 25 million units sold, so this is a 3.6 million unit increase over a 3 months *******. pic.twitter.com/NIn4ihw1u3 — Stealth (@Stealth40k) December 15, 2024 Naturally, any Soulslike that followed would be compared to it, but Lies of P never aimed to compete directly with Elden Ring. Instead, it embraced its own identity, focusing on a more structured narrative and a refined, yet accessible, combat system. Game director Choi Ji-won talked about the differences between the two games in an interview with DualShockers. We have really diverse and colorful combat mechanisms; on top of that, there is the lying mechanism which fits the story of Pinocchio and fits the ending. Lies of P‘s unique lying mechanic is part of what makes it so special. It influenced both gameplay and story outcomes, leading to multiple endings. Ji-won noted that players should “really, really, really” see the story through to the end, hinting at the different endings. Choi Ji-won made it clear that difficulty alone does not define a Soulslike game. While he firmly believes that games in this genre shouldn’t include difficulty options, he also acknowledged that Lies of P would be easier compared to its peers. Instead of relying on sheer challenge, the game leaned into the design and mechanics of its combat system. Neowiz is embracing the success with a DLC and potential sequel And we can’t wait for what’s next. | Image Credit: NEOWIZ Despite coming into a very competitive genre, Lies of P found remarkable success, surpassing seven million players within its first six months. Neowiz Games isn’t stopping with just one game. A DLC expansion is currently in the works, and a sequel has already been confirmed. Director Ji-won has stated that the team is committed to improving what worked while making other aspects better. With the first game proving that a Soulslike doesn’t have to be brutally difficult to be successful, the sequel has the opportunity to push the genre even further just like how Elden Ring did it. So while Lies of P didn’t redefine the genre like Elden Ring, it proved that Soulslikes could offer good experiences without relying solely on difficulty. Neowiz put together the familiarity of Pinocchio’s tale with unique combat and a rich atmosphere and it turned out to be a success. Will they find it again?
