Church of England missed opportunity to show victims heard, says bishop Church of England missed opportunity to show victims heard, says bishop The Church of England’s failure to adopt a fully independent safeguarding model was a missed opportunity to make clear it has listened to victims, the bishop tasked with leading on the issue has said. The Bishop of Stepney, Dr Joanne Grenfell, who is lead bishop for safeguarding, had put forward a motion to the General Synod for all Church-employed safeguarding officers to be transferred to a new independent body. Dr Grenfell told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme she was “very disappointed”, but that the Church had nonetheless adopted changes that amount to a “big step forward”. Representatives of survivors branded the outcome a “punch in the gut” for victims of abuse and said it showed the Church had decided to “keep it in the family”. It comes as the Church has faced intense scrutiny for its safeguarding practices in recent months after the the former Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby resigned over his handling of an abuse case. On Tuesday the Synod, the Church of England’s governing body, voted overwhelmingly for a less independent option which will see the creation of an independent central safeguarding team, but with local diocesan and cathedral safeguarding officers remaining with their current church employers. Dr Grenfell told the BBC: “On the one hand I’m really disappointed, as were many, that Synod missed the opportunity to send an unequivocal message to victims and survivors and the wider nation that we hear their pain and concerns. “On the other hand, what we did vote to get on with, an independent scrutiny body, is actually quite a big step forward in itself. “But we need to do that further work around operational independence, and I’m really committed to doing that.” On Tuesday, the Synod had been expected to vote on the fully-independent model proposed by Prof Alexis Jay, who previously chaired the national Independent Inquiry into Child ******* Abuse, and barrister Sarah Wilkinson. But following an amendment, the Prof Jay-backed model was not voted on at all, and an alternative was adopted. Bishop of Blackburn Philip North, who proposed the amendment to endorse the less independent option while work was done to see if the other one was “legally deliverable”, described the latter as “eye-wateringly complex” and said it could take years to implement. But Dr Grenfell said: “I don’t think we can hide behind those complex structures, that’s just not good enough for victims and survivors… “What I’m concerned about, is that it sounds, it feels to victims and survivors who I have spoken to, that we didn’t hear what they were saying and I really want to say to them ‘I hear you and we will continue to do this work’.” The Survivors Trust group said public trust in the Church to effectively safeguard children “has been totally lost”. “Church leaders must reconsider their approach and take immediate steps toward genuine, independent safeguarding reform,” it said. Andrew Graystone, an advocate for abuse survivors, accused the Church of “shocking arrogance” and said the Synod had “voted for a measure that will leave the power of bishops completely unchanged and unchallenged”. Dr Grenfell added the Church is going through a “really painful and necessary time of reckoning” and there is a “huge amount to think through before we appoint a new Archbishop of Canterbury”. The Church has faced criticism for its handling of safeguarding issues, with a damning report into serial abuser and Christian camp leader John Smyth leading to Mr Welby’s resignation. The Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell, who has temporarily taken on most of Mr Welby’s responsibilities, has also faced criticism over his handling of an abuse case. Mr Cottrell has said he supports “independence in safeguarding” and was “disappointed” that it would now happen in “two stages”. He said he would “fully commit” himself to “implementing Synod’s decision and making it happen”. Also known as the Church’s parliament, the General Synod meets up to three times a year to debate and pass measures governing how the Church works. It is made up of 478 members who are elected every five years. Source link #Church #England #missed #opportunity #show #victims #heard #bishop Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Kremlin says Russian freed in US in swap for Fogel Kremlin says Russian freed in US in swap for Fogel The Kremlin says a Russian citizen has been freed from a US prison in exchange for the release of jailed US schoolteacher Marc Fogel in a deal that it says could help build trust between the two governments. But Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov played down the suggestion by US President Donald Trump that the deal could make a significant contribution towards ending the Russia-Ukraine war. Peskov said the freed Russian would return home in the coming days, and would not be named until they were back on Russian soil. Fogel, 63, was serving a 14-year sentence for drug smuggling after being caught at a Moscow airport with a small amount of **********. He was flown on Tuesday to Washington DC, where he celebrated his release with Trump at the White House. The deal was the first that Russia has struck with Trump’s new administration since he returned to the White House on January 20 for a second non-consecutive term. Trump said it “could be a big important part” of ending the three-year-old Ukraine war. Asked about that comment, Peskov said any agreement on releasing prisoners was the result of “very, very meticulous negotiating work”. He added: “Of course, such agreements are hardly capable of becoming a breakthrough moment but at the same time, bit by bit, these are steps to build mutual trust which is now at its lowest point.” Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have both said they are keen to meet to discuss Trump’s ideas for bringing a swift conclusion to the war but no date for any summit has been announced. US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz said Fogel was freed in a negotiated exchange “that serves as a show of good faith from the Russians and a sign we are moving in the right direction to end the brutal and terrible war in Ukraine”. Trump had said another person would be released on Wednesday, without identifying who it would be. He called the terms of Fogel’s release “very fair”. “We were treated very nicely by Russia. Actually, I hope that’s the beginning of a relationship where we can end that (Ukraine) war and millions of people can stop being killed,” Trump said. Peskov declined to comment on the possibility of a further release. Fogel was released into the custody of US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, who made an unannounced stop in Moscow on Tuesday to pick him up. The Washington Post said that according to Fox News broadcaster Sean Hannity, Witkoff, a real estate developer and longtime friend of Trump, had a three-and-a-half hour meeting with Putin. Peskov said he had “nothing to say” on that. Asked what the United States gave up in exchange for Fogel, Trump told reporters earlier “not much” and called the release a show of good faith from the Russian side. Russia’s rouble rose against the US dollar on Wednesday on news of the Fogel deal and optimism about prospects for an easing of the Ukraine crisis. Seagate Ultra-Compact SSD Review: Premium flash drive looks, mid-range speed Seagate Ultra-Compact SSD Review: Premium flash drive looks, mid-range speed Storage mainstay Seagate has been churning out hard drives and SSDs for decades, as well as innumerable portable hard drives. But it’s largely left portable SSDs to its premium, Apple-focused LaCie brand. But today the company is announcing its Ultra-Compact SSD, an external solid-state drive available in 1TB and 2TB capacities that, with its slender design and built-in USB-C port, looks like a high-end flash drive, rather than a traditional portable SSD. These kinds of drives, sometimes called SSD sticks, that pack SSD-like performance and a built-in USB port for cable-free use, have become increasingly common in the last couple of years, with the SK Hynix Tube T31 being our current favorite of what we’re still classifying as the best flash drives. We’ll have to do some testing to find out if Seagate’s drive deserves a spot on the above list, but its pretty external shell aside, it has some interesting things going for it that may make it worth considering even if it isn’t the fastest performer. Like many other Seagate products, the Ultra-Compact SSD ships with three years of the company’s Rescue Data Recovery service, as well as six-month trials of cloud backup and image organization services. That’s not going to be important for everyone, but the data recovery service will certainly appeal many who’ve lost irreplaceable data to a drive ****** in the past. Dropbox Backup and Mylio Photos+ image organization and backup services. Seagate-Ultra Compact SSD specs Swipe to scroll horizontally Header Cell – Column 0 1TB 2TB Pricing $90.99 $179.99 Interface / Protocol USB 3.2 Gen2 (10Gbps) USB 3.2 Gen2 (10Gbps) Sequential Read Up to 1,000 MB/s Up to 1,000 MB/s Sequential Write Up to 1,000 MB/s Up to 1,000 MB/s Dimensions 2.7 (L) x .7(W) x 0.34(H) inches (without sleeve) 2.7 (L) x .7(W) x 0.34(H) inches (without sleeve) 11.15 grams 19.6 grams (without sleeve) 19.6 grams (without sleeve) Warranty 3 years 3 years Design of the Seagate-Ultra Compact SSD (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) With a single-piece aluminum silver shell (with plastic plugs on the font and back) and a 2.7 x 0.7 x 0.34 inches, Seagate’s drive looks and feels great. The cap over the USB-C port is all rubber, but it stays on much better than most plastic flash drive caps. And if you’re worried about scratching up the metal, the company also includes a gray rubber sleeve that matches the cap. That does add a little bulk to the drive, but it’s still small enough that it shouldn’t interfere with nearby ports like many competing high-end stick SSDs or flash drives. Seagate points out that the drive is made up of at least 35% recycled materials (likely the aluminum), and it’s rated for drops up to 3 meters and sports IP54 dust and water resistance. Those specs are likely only while using the sleeve, but the drive feels plenty rugged without it for travel in typical conditions. Software and included extras The Seagate Ultra-Compact SSD ships with Seagate’s Rescue Data Recovery service for three years, which families or users dealing with truly irreplaceable data will no doubt find appealing. That said, my personal history with drives like this tells me it’s far more likely that you’d lose a drive this than have it randomly fail and lock you out of data access. If you’re worried about losing things like family photos, a cloud backup of what’s on the drive might be more useful. Speaking of that, the drive also ships with a six-month trial of Dropbox Backup and the Mylio Photos+ image organization and backup service. I don’t expect these are going to sway many potential buyers, but at least the trials aren’t the more typical 90-day variety. Six months will likely give you enough time to decide whether or not a service is worth paying for. Comparison products As a 2TB device in a flash drive form factor, the Seagate Ultra-Compact SSD doesn’t have a ton of direct competition, as many competing drives like the SK Hynix Tube T31 and Kingston DataTraveler Max) both top out at 1TB. The Transcend ESD310 does go up to 2TB though, and is selling for the same $179 price as the MSRP of the 2TB Seagate drive. And while it’s significantly wider, the ADATA SC750 is also available at 2TB for as little as $119. You’ll find all of these drives and more in our benchmark charts below. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Trace Testing – PCMark 10 Storage Benchmark PCMark 10 is a trace-based benchmark that uses a wide-ranging set of real-world traces from popular applications and everyday tasks to measure the performance of storage devices. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Landing more or less in the middle of our competing cable-free flash drive and SSD comparisons, this isn’t a great showing for Seagate’s drive. But the drive is still much closer to the best drives here than the worst. Transfer Rates – DiskBench We use the DiskBench storage benchmarking tool to test file transfer performance with a custom 10GB dataset. We copy 1,204 files (images, videos, and software ISO files) to a folder on the test drive (write). Then, after leaving the system idle for five minutes, we run the same test in reverse, moving the test folder to a different location on our PCIe 4.0 testing drive. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Again the Seagate drive fails to impress here, at least on read speeds. But its write speed of nearly 512 MB/s puts it in 4th place among the other drives tested here. And 570 MB/s mixed-file reads is still is still a solid showing for a drive this small. Synthetic Testing CrystalDiskMark CrystalDiskMark (CDM) is a free and easy-to-run storage benchmarking tool that SSD companies commonly use to assign performance specifications to their products. It gives us insight into how each device handles different file sizes. We run this test at its default settings. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) While again not the fastest of the bunch, Seagate’s Ultra-Compact SSD manages a balanced read and write speed both easily above 1,000 MB/s (so above its rated speed) in this test. Only our favorite SK Hynix Tube T31 is markedly better on both fronts. But remember, its capacity tops out at 1TB. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) On the flip side, there’s little positive to say about the Seagate drive’s small file write results here, other than they aren’t dramatically worse than the worst competing drives in our testing pool. If you’re looking for an external drive to directly run an operating system or demanding programs off of, there are lots of better options. Bottom line There’s lots to like about the design as well as the bundled data recovery features of Seagate’s Ultra-Compact SSD. And its performance, while far from class-leading, is still good enough to please mainstream consumers – especially those stepping up from a portable hard drive or an old space-cramped flash drive for backing up key files. But apart from its compact size and spacious 2TB option, there’s little to set it apart from the pack unless you count its bottom-rung small file performance – which to be fair won’t matter much to those just looking to move files on and off the drive for backup or other sneakernet purposes. And when you consider Adata’s SC750 was faster on nearly all of our tests for $60 less, Seagate’s compact metal shell and three years of data recovery service need to do a lot of heavy lifting to make Seagate’s drive appealing. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Still, with a decent price drop over its initial MSRP, it could be worth considering. It has the nicest design of any of these stick SSDs I’ve used yet, and its performance is still good enough for my typical tasks, like moving test result files and game files between PCs. RSF accused of storming Darfur’s Zamzam camp RSF accused of storming Darfur’s Zamzam camp A paramilitary force in Sudan has stormed the country’s largest displacement camp, looting and setting fire to the market and several homes, a local refugee group has said. The Zamzam camp in North Darfur has been the target of intense artillery shelling since late last year, but this is the first time the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has been accused of sending in fighters. An eyewitness told the BBC the situation at the camp was “extremely catastrophic”. There were many casualties, but the camp’s hospital no longer had a functioning surgery, he said. The nearby city of el-Fasher, one of the centres of the civil war that erupted in 2023, is already under siege by the RSF as it battles the army. The military and RSF had been allies – coming to power together in a coup – but fell out over an internationally backed plan to move towards civilian rule. The Sudanese IDPs and Refugees Bloc said Zamzam camp was invaded on Tuesday. However, an RSF spokesman denied its fighters had penetrated it, saying they had seized a nearby military base belonging to an armed group that fights alongside the Sudanese military, after it had shelled RSF checkpoints for days. Zamzam hosts about half a million displaced people who were already suffering from famine. Reports said the attack forced thousands of them to flee again. North Darfur’s Health Minister Ibrahim Abdullah Khater told the BBC that those injured in the attack were not able to reach el-Fasher for treatment because the RSF was blocking the road and preventing access to the city. “The ones suffering the most are the displaced people,” he said. The humanitarian catastrophe worsened late last year when Zamzam came under heavy artillery fire, which aid organisations, including Doctors Without Borders, blamed on the RSF. A group of international non-governmental organisations issued a statement in December, saying the attacks on Zamzam marked “an escalation in violence on a site which has previously been spared from active hostilities”, although it was “consistent with a pattern of attacks” on other camps for displaced people. “This underscores the reality that there are now no safe places for people to flee to in North Darfur,” it said. The siege of el-Fasher began last April – a year into the conflict. It is the only city still under army control in Darfur, where the RSF has been accused of carrying out ethnic cleansing against non-Arab communities. By using legacy tools, businesses are operating less efficiently than they could be, slowing themselves down and preventing themselves from optimal growth, a study from AutoRek found. Although four in five (82%) have automation on their roadmaps, there are still some challenges that are stopping businesses from using better tools. Businesses are using legacy software, still Only two in five (43%) plan to implement automation within the next six to 12 months, with a further fifth (20%) planning to do so within 18 months. AutoRek acknowledged that spreadsheets offer familiarity for workers, however they’re let down by large amounts of manual processing that can lead to delays. Legacy systems also threaten compliance and competitiveness by introducing potential regulatory risks and increasing costs. “Legacy systems and manual processes pose a direct threat to operational efficiency. In turn, this threatens compliance and market competitiveness,” noted AutoRek Payment’s Lead, Nick Botha. PBS shuts diversity office as it faces pressure from Trump administration PBS shuts diversity office as it faces pressure from Trump administration New York — PBS says it is shutting down its office of diversity, equity and inclusion to comply with President Trump’s executive order and firing the two executives brought on when the effort was begun in 2021. The move, eliminating the jobs held by Cecilia Loving and her associate Gina Leow, comes as public television and radio gird for a fight over federal funding likely to be more serious than they’ve faced in many years. Despite eliminating the DEI effort, PBS CEO Paula Kerger said Tuesday that “we were committed to telling the stories of all Americans before we had an office, and will continue to do it afterwards.” Because PBS gets federal funding through U.S. Department of Education and National Science Foundation for its children’s programming, the system’s lawyers determined that it needed to comply with Mr. Trump’s order, she said. The system gets some $535 million in general support from the government, about 16% of its budget, but because it’s filtered through the private Corporation for Public Broadcasting, it’s unclear whether that would require compliance. Some of PBS’ 330 member stations have their own DEI efforts and receive CPB funding, so it will be up to them to decide what to do with their offices. “We’re trying to encourage them to have lawyers look at their circumstances,” Kerger told The Associated Press. The Free Press website reported that PBS initially considered transferring Loving and Leow to other jobs within the system. Kerger said that was thought about but rejected. The DEI office was concerned with more than just racial equity; much of its recent work went to making sure children with hearing issues had access to PBS programming, she said. Four years ago, PBS faced pressure from the opposite direction. More than 130 filmmakers sent a letter to the system saying that its relationship with documentarian Ken Burns came at the expense of others and that PBS showed a “systemic failure to fulfill a mandate for a diversity of voices.” With the Trump administration’s current efforts at cutting federal spending, Kerger understands public broadcasting will be looked at closely. Republican Sen. Mike Lee, of Utah, posted “let’s defund PBS and NPR” on X Tuesday. That’s not a new opinion. Republicans in the past have made similar calls, primarily because of a contention that news programming leans left. Ultimately, efforts to defund PBS usually fall short through pressure brought to bear on individual legislators from the hundreds of stations across the country. Kerger and NPR officials are expected to testify next month before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. “I think it is different this time because so much is under scrutiny,” Kerger said. “I never assume that government funding will continue. I think we have to work hard each and every time these questions come up to make sure we are making the case of why this is important.” She said it’s a time where people assume “there is bias at play” when they don’t see their opinions expressed in news stories. Some people feel news efforts are too conservative, others too liberal. “We take that part of our work pretty seriously and if we miss sometime, we correct that,” she said. Work done by local stations to alert citizens during the California wildfires and hurricanes in Florida are examples of things legislators need to be aware of, she said. “I’m always an optimistic person,” Kerger said, “but I think it’s going to require a lot of conversations to see if we can hold on to a level of funding to enable our stations to continue.” Source link #PBS #shuts #diversity #office #faces #pressure #Trump #administration Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Pilot suspected of working for ******** drug cartel arrested Pilot suspected of working for ******** drug cartel arrested Vanessa Buschschlüter BBC News Twitter/@OHarfuch A photo of “El Jando” was released after his arrest by ******** security forces Security forces in Mexico have arrested a pilot they suspect of working for Los Chapitos, the ******** cartel run by sons of the jailed drug lord Joaquín ‘”El Chapo” Guzmán. The pilot, known by the alias of “El Jando”, was detained in the northern city of Culiacán, the stronghold of Los Chapitos, in an operation in which one soldier was shot dead. ******** intelligence sources allege he is a key figure in Los Chapitos and that he played a role in the sting operation which led to the arrest of another cartel kingpin “El Mayo Zambada” in the US. The pilot’s lawyers have asked the courts for more time to prepare his defence. While “El Jando” was detained in the early hours of Saturday, detailed information about the charges levelled against him have only become public in recent days. Mexico’s security minister told reporters at a news conference on Tuesday that he could confirm “El Jando” was the trusted pilot of the leader of “Los Chapitos”. Prosecutors allege that as well as being an accomplished pilot, he was also involved in drug and arms trafficking and in several explosive attacks on the security forces. Most importantly though, ******** intelligence services are now hoping to gain information from “El Jando” about the mysterious flight which delivered wanted drug kingpin “El Mayo” into the hands of US federal agents. US officials have said that “El Mayo” was betrayed by none other than Joaquín Guzmán López, one of the sons of the infamous “El Chapo” Guzmán. The officials allege that Guzmán López tricked the 75-year-old “El Mayo” – who had been a close ally of his father – into boarding a plane with him which then crossed the border into the US. Photos released by US law enforcement showed the two men being arrested at a private airport near El Paso, Texas, by US agents who had clearly been waiting for them on the airport’s tarmac for their arrival. Those loyal to “El Mayo” think that Joaquín Guzmán López delivered the cartel leader, who had evaded capture for three decades, to the US as part of a deal to negotiate a lesser sentence for himself. Reuters ‘El Mayo’ has pleaded not guilty to drugs charges The lawyer for “El Mayo” denied that his client had been “duped”, but said that he had been forced onto the plane by Joaquín Guzmán López. “He was ambushed, thrown to the ground, and handcuffed … he was then thrown into the back of a pickup truck and taken to a landing strip; there, he was forced onto a plane, his legs tied to the seat by Joaquín, and brought to the US against his will,” the lawyer told the LA Times newspaper. The lawyer also said that the only people on board the plane had been “the pilot, Joaquín and my client”. Reuters The plane landed in Santa Teresa, New Mexico, not far from El Paso While it is not yet clear whether “El Jando” – the pilot arrested this weekend – was the one who flew the plane or whether he helped to plan the operation, ******** prosecutors appeared confident he could provide them with information about the flight which ended in the arrest of both Guzmán López and “El Mayo”. “El Mayo” has since pleaded not guilty in a US court to a long list of drug-related charges while lawyers for Joaquín Guzmán López have said that their client is in plea negotiations. The alleged betrayal of “El Mayo” by Guzmán López has led to a split in their cartel with followers of the former, known as “Los Mayos” or “La Mayiza”, attacking those loyal to the latter. She told CBN News that the scene was “very moving” to be part of. “They honored the 14 victims,” Tenedorio said. “It was just beautiful.” She said the entire experience was deeply “comforting” and made her and her husband “feel special,” as she recognized there are many other parents who face similar pain but who don’t get a lot of attention or help publicly in navigating such dynamics. The families were joined by members of the New Orleans Fire Department, New Orleans EMS, and New Orleans Police, who held photos of the 14 victims during the coin toss. “I’m very, very honored and blessed,” Tenedorio said. “I’m very humbled by it, and I just … wish this could happen for everyone — that everyone’s life was celebrated like my son’s life has been.” She also shared how President Donald Trump, who was on-site at the Super Bowl, came down to meet with her and other victims’ family members. She called the experience “very awesome.” “It was a quick moment, but he was very nice,” she said, noting how Trump shook her father’s hand and thanked him for his past military service. “It was very, very, very awesome.” Tenedorio said she sensed that it was very important for Trump to be there with the victims and that he could have stayed up in the suites but took the time to take photos and talk with the families and first responders. “I feel like it was very important to him,” she said. Tenedorio also spoke about how she’s personally faring after Matthew’s death, noting she’s holding up as best she can and relying on her faith to navigate pain and uncertainty. “I go to church every Sunday,” she said. “I read my ******. I pray. I’m just … holding onto my faith.” While she and her husband are back to work and adjusting to a new normal, the trauma of what unfolded continues to sting. She’s finding peace and solace in her church and community though. Tenedorio also expressed gratitude for finding closure as well, crediting God for connecting her with the policeman who was with Matthew before his death. She called her interactions with this cop a “miracle,” as she finally learned what unfolded and was given the details she previously sought yet did not have. “We don’t have the autopsy report quite yet,” she said, expressing gratitude for the officer she said prayed for her son amid the unthinkable. “We were at least a wonderful man. He’s a Catholic, and he’s a very wonderful person, and he prayed for him … it’s just too beautiful.” Tenedorio continued, “It brings me peace. I don’t need any more answers than that. The manner of his death is *********. So that’s never going to change. … He’s at rest. He’s at peace and a wonderful, kind man was with him making that transition.” ***As the number of voices facing big-tech censorship continues to grow, please sign up for Faithwire’s daily newsletter and download the CBN News app to stay up-to-date with the latest news from a distinctly Christian perspective.*** Source link #Orleans #Terror #Victims #Mom #Praises #Trump #NFL #Incredible #Move Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Unprovoked shark attacks on humans drop sharply in 2024 Unprovoked shark attacks on humans drop sharply in 2024 Unprovoked attacks by sharks declined sharply in 2024, with 47 incidents logged worldwide, down 22 from the previous year and significantly below a 10-year average of 70, according to new figures. A report by the Museum of Natural History in Gainesville, Florida, which houses the International Shark Attack File (ISAF), showed four attacks in 2024 were fatal. That also represents a decline compared to 2023. The lower figures could simply be a statistical fluctuation, said Gavin Naylor, director of the museum’s shark research program. The numbers also varied considerably in some cases in previous years. The ISAF, which according to its information is the “world’s only scientifically documented, comprehensive database of all known shark attacks,” published the information in its annual report, which documents attacks in which humans did not provoke the shark’s aggression. Cases in which the animal was intentionally or unintentionally touched or provoked – for example, during spearfishing or when trying to free a shark from a net – are not recorded. Naylor said the ISAF aims to understand sharks’ natural behaviour to better understand why humans are sometimes bitten by them. A third of the recorded attacks worldwide affected surfers. This is because surfers are in the water where there are good waves, which is where there is turbidity and this attracts sharks, he said. The turbidity also reduces visibility and makes false attacks more likely. The US remains the frontrunner with 28 recorded cases, the data showed. Most attacks occurred in Florida, with 14, eight of which were in Volusia County on the Atlantic Coast, home to Daytona Beach. It is considered the “world capital of shark attacks.” Source link #Unprovoked #shark #attacks #humans #drop #sharply Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

New Astro Bot PS5 Bundle Reportedly Releasing In March New Astro Bot PS5 Bundle Reportedly Releasing In March A new PlayStation 5 bundle might be on the way, as Dealabs writer billbil-kun–who has a solid track record revealing new gaming hardware and software–claims that Sony will offer the console with a download code for Astro Bot in March. If true, this would give new PS5 owners two Astro Bot games to enjoy, as all PS5s come with Astro Bot’s Playroom already installed. According to billbil-kun, this bundle will include a standard PS5 console with a disc drive and will be available throughout North America and Europe. If the rumors are true, then we could see it officially revealed during today’s State of Play livestream. Astro Bot earned rave reviews after it was released last year, as the Team Asobi-developed platforming game was praised for its fun level design, polished gameplay, and DualSense controller functions. It was one of GameSpot’s 10 best games of 2024, and at last year’s Game Awards, it won the Game of the Year award at the Geoff Keighley-hosted event. Since Astro Bot’s September launch, Team Asobi has added several more levels to the game, and overall, it’s a charming celebration of PlayStation history. “Team Asobi cements itself as an essential PlayStation studio with an imaginative platformer for the ages,” Mark Delaney wrote in GameSpot’s Astro Bot review. If you are looking to get a PS5 right now, Walmart does have the Fortnite Cobalt Star Bundle in stock. Man Utd: Ineos considering further redundancies at the club Man Utd: Ineos considering further redundancies at the club Ineos completed a deal worth about $1.6bn (£1.25bn) for a stake in Manchester United in February 2024. After Ratcliffe’s investment was confirmed, Ineos took over football operations at Old Trafford and quickly began a restructure with Dan Ashworth appointed sporting director, Omar Berrada as the new chief executive and Jason Wilcox as technical director. In June, Ineos opted to keep Erik ten Hag as manager but then sacked him, at a cost of £10.4m in compensation. United paid Sporting £11m to bring in coach Ruben Amorim as Ten Hag’s replacement in November. The Portuguese has won 10 and lost eight of his 20 games in charge. The club also paid £3m in compensation to Newcastle for Ashworth, but announced his departure in December after five months in the job. Ineos and Ratcliffe have also been criticised for raising matchday ticket prices to £66 per game, with no concessions for children or pensioners. The club are struggling on the pitch, sitting in 13th place in the Premier League, 27 points behind leaders Liverpool and 14 points off the top four. They are however through to the FA Cup fifth round and last 16 of the Europa League. In their two transfer windows in charge Ineos has spent over £200m on players, and overseen the departure of midfielder Scott McTominay to Napoli and Marcus Rashford on loan to Aston Villa. Big money signings Jadon Sancho and Antony have also been loaned out. Dog the Bounty Hunter Joins Huge Prison Outreach as 800 Inmates Hear Gospel: ‘Revival is Happening’ Dog the Bounty Hunter Joins Huge Prison Outreach as 800 Inmates Hear Gospel: ‘Revival is Happening’ The unmatched love of Jesus Christ has reached “a place filled with men the world has given up on” and changed them forever, a non-profit prison ministry reports. God Behind Bars is a ministry that works to restore the lives of inmates through faith-building outreach programs. The ministry reports the gospel message was recently shared with nearly 800 inmates at Louisiana State Penitentiary, also known as Angola, in Angola, Louisiana. According to the organization, more than 50 incarcerated men gave their lives to Jesus, and 12 incarcerated men were baptized on the spot. “Most of these men are serving 25 years to life in prison but God is not done with them yet,” the ministry shared on social media. “REVIVAL is happening inside of Louisiana Prisons!” Jake Bodine, CEO of God Behind Bars, told CBN News there is a growing Christian population within the church as inmates train to become pastors and disciple other inmates. “We went to, number one, fill their cup – and to reach those that would most likely never darken the door of a church – with the love of Christ and we saw an amazing response,” he said. The ministry partnered with Duane Chapman, famously known as “Dog the Bounty Hunter,” and his wife, Francie Chapman, former NFL player Joe Jackson, and former NFL player Mike Barber to share the gospel and worship alongside many of the inmates. Each speaker shared a word and a personal testimony with the inmates. “What a powerful and amazing weekend. Ministering at Angola Prison with Dog The Bounty Hunter and Mike Barber, Feb 1,” wrote Joe Jackson on Instagram. “Angola was once known as the bloodiest prison in America. It still is, but it’s the blood of the Jesus cleansing the soul.” “The thing that stuck out to me most was the faith community (within the prison)…our pastors literally had tears running down their face for guys that they have prayed for, for so long (were now) accepting Jesus as their Lord and Savior,” Bodine said. Chapman is known for the successful career he built chasing criminals, but shared on social media that “NOTHING compares to watching a man surrender to Jesus.” He previously told CBN News Digital that he was brought up in a Christian home by a praying mom. “I knew more than most people did, right from wrong, miracles of God — I knew all that,” he said, noting, though, that he got off track at one point. “I went to prison in the 70s.” Chapman and three others reportedly broke into a man’s home in a search for drugs. One of his accomplices shot and killed the man during a struggle. Chapman was sentenced to five years and served 18 months. “Behind bars, I found my calling. I’ll never forget the moment a guard yelled—’Hook him up, Bounty Hunter!’ Right then, I knew exactly what to do,” he shared in a recent Instagram post. “Since that day, I’ve taken down over 10,000 fugitives, built a name the world wouldn’t forget, and led the #1 show on TV. But today, my mission is *******—I’m hunting souls for Jesus.” “Because I know what it’s like to be caged. I know what it’s like to be lost. And I know what it’s like when Jesus steps in and hell trembles.” Bodine said Chapman was the exact right vessel to “share the Love of Christ with others.” “He’s got to live on both sides of it,” he explained. “He began working as a bounty hunter in law enforcement and through that he felt like it was a platform to care as a bail bondsman to help these individuals who are incarcerated. He talks about that in his story that when sometimes people skip bail, you got to go hunt them down. But he never lost the opportunity to share his faith with them and to encourage them to do better.” “Today, [he and Francie] spend every waking moment thinking of how they can share the love of Christ,” he said. It is also a mandate for Bodine – one that has literally opened prison doors and put him before millions. As CBN News reported, Bodine started the ministry in 2009 to “reach the least of these,” and it has blossomed into a revival-type movement at correctional facilities across the country. “We have over 74 church-plants [within prisons] across the U.S. and a digital application that mobilizes the word of Christ to prisons 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to over two million people. It was an opportunity [and] God [has] continued to open doors,” he told CBN News. “Any opportunity we have to share the testimony of Christ, we take it.” Bodine recently shared that God Behind Bars has seen nearly 1,000,000 salvations and more than 10,000 baptisms. Those numbers are a testament to the power of the pure gospel and sharing the hope found in Jesus Christ. “When you watch the authentic Gospel run rampant in a community that doesn’t know anything else, you get to see it in its purest form…to watch people accept it and hold on to it is probably the biggest gift given to me,” Bodine said. “The hope of Jesus is literally the answer to everything. And it is living on display anytime we walk into a facility.” ***Please sign up for CBN Newsletters and download the CBN News app to ensure you keep receiving the latest news from a distinctly Christian perspective.*** Source link #Dog #Bounty #Hunter #Joins #Huge #Prison #Outreach #Inmates #Hear #Gospel #Revival #Happening Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Hunt: Showdown 1896 Developer is Laying Off 400 Employees
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Hunt: Showdown 1896 Developer is Laying Off 400 Employees Hunt: Showdown 1896 Developer is Laying Off 400 Employees · · February 12, 2025 Hunt: Showdown 1896 developer Crytek announced today that the company will be laying off around 15% of its workforce, which amounts to around 400 employees. Crytek revealed in a post on X that it is the latest studio in the industry to lay off employees due to “unfavourable market dynamics.” The developer will lay off 400 employees across the “development teams and shared services.” The developer also revealed that since the next Crysis game was put on hold in Q3 2024, they are trying to move its workforce to Hunt: Showdown 1896. Crytek stated that layoffs would be “inevitable” if the company had to move forward. They had already tried reducing costs and “cutting operating expenses,” but to no avail. To help the affected employees, the Hunt: Showdown developer will provide them with “severance packages and career assistance services”. Crytek believes that Hunt Showdown: 1896 offers a “very strong gaming service.” Therefore, they are “fully committed to its operation” and will continue to “expand and evolve” the game with new content. The focus on their engine, Cryengine, will also continue. Crytek is the latest studio to lose employees in 2025. We have already seen Rocksteady, Microsoft, Unity, Ubisoft, and others lay off employees this year, and it seems this trend isn’t going to stop soon. We’ve barely seen AMD’s RDNA 4 GPUs in action yet, but a new rumor suggests we could be getting an Nvidia RTX 5090 competitor at last We’ve barely seen AMD’s RDNA 4 GPUs in action yet, but a new rumor suggests we could be getting an Nvidia RTX 5090 competitor at last A new rumor hints at AMD potentially working on a 32GB RDNA 4 GPU If true, it would launch sometime in 2025 A 32GB gaming GPU would likely compete with Nvidia’s RTX 5090 It seems Nvidia has taken the GPU market by storm yet again with its powerhouse RTX 5000 series GPUs, while AMD focuses on its midrange RDNA 4 GPUs launching in March – but a new rumor suggests AMD is also working on a GPU that won’t be a midrange card, but could instead compete against Team Green’s flagship GPU. According to Zhangzhonghao, who is reliable for AMD leaks in the past on Chiphell (reported by NotebookCheck), AMD could be working on an RDNA 4 GPU that utilizes 32GB of VRAM, slated for launch sometime in 2025. It’s unclear whether this will be a gaming GPU or one dedicated to workstation desktop PCs, but it’s very promising to say the least. Nvidia’s RTX 5090 boasts 32GB of VRAM and is the best GPU you can buy (despite current inflated prices and limited availability). While VRAM isn’t the be-all and end-all, plenty of games are VRAM hungry (especially when played at high resolutions like 4K), and it suggests this GPU will be aimed at the high-end of the market, rather than the more affordable GPUs we’ve come to expect from AMD. We’ve already seen glimpses of what Team Red’s Radeon RX 9070 XT has to offer with early 4K native performance results in Call of Duty ****** Ops 6, which suggests that upcoming card will be a midrange GPU. Rumors of a 32GB GPU, then, are pretty exciting for gamers who have been hoping AMD would once more release powerful high-end GPUs to take on Nvidia… (Image credit: Future/Shutterstock) Please tell me this is true… The RTX 5090 and RTX 5080’s prices are currently inflated at almost every retailer due to a combination of scalpers and limited availability, so you can probably forget about buying either of them for now (unless you’re willing to throw the entire contents of your wallet at them). I fully expect the same to happen to the RTX 5070 Ti ($749 / £729 / AU$1,509) and the RTX 5070 ($549 / £529 / AU$1,109) launching later in February. With this in mind, I’m banking on AMD’s Radeon RX 9000 series launch in March to provide some necessary competition in the GPU market. If the new RDNA 4 GPUs end up being affordable options while still offering a high level of performance in games, it could give Nvidia a reason to look over its shoulder for once and give gamers more options. Nvidia has dominated the GPU market for years, not only by providing high performing GPUs, but also with industry-leading upscaling technologies like DLSS. We’re still waiting to see FSR 4’s full unveiling (which is AMD’s DLSS equivalent) – and while I’m impressed by what I’ve seen from Team Green’s DLSS 4, a few early glimpses of AMD’s FSR 4 has me excited for what this means for image stability in games, along with the chance of higher frame rates. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. Better yet, if this fresh rumor of a 32GB RDNA 4 gaming GPU is legitimate, it will be hard for PC gamers to ignore Team Red’s efforts on this occasion. It’s undeniable that many favor Nvidia’s GPUs thanks to the high performance levels when activating ray tracing and DLSS, but perhaps things could swing in AMD’s favor this time around… You may also like… Source link #Weve #barely #AMDs #RDNA #GPUs #action #rumor #suggests #Nvidia #RTX #competitor Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

It also has sent small numbers of officials to help with EU defence missions. The EU has been taking a larger role in continental defence, after decades of focusing on economic integration. Since 2009, the EU has had a mutual defence clause that says members have an obligation to assist any other member that is “the victim of armed aggression on its territory.” The idea of an EU army has been discussed over the decades. French President Emmanuel Macron is particularly enthusiastic about the idea and has argued it would reduce the continent’s reliance on American support. Trudeau’s visit comes ahead of upcoming meetings in Brussels of the NATO military alliance and the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, which will be attended by Defence Minister Bill Blair. Dredge, the eldritch fishing sim, is set to hit mobile later this month with new release date Dredge, the eldritch fishing sim, is set to hit mobile later this month with new release date Hotly-anticipated eldritch fishing sim Dredge is arriving on mobile February 27th This is after more than a few shifts in its release date Manage your sanity as you ply the depths to feed the inhabitants of a desolate island chain For all you fishing aficionados just dying to experience the sanity-shredding isolation of the deep sea, you’ll be glad to hear that the wait is finally over. Because Dredge, the eldritch fishing simulator, is finally set to arrive with its latest release date set for February 27th after some delays. In Dredge, you play a nameless fisherman plying the depths around a lonely archipelago. Your job is simple, catch fish and sell them on to the islanders. But things get more complex when it comes to maintaining and upgrading your boat, exploring the archipelago and its mysterious goings-on and- wait, what’s that in the fog at night? As I reported late last year, Dredge’s hotly-anticipated mobile port was delayed until February 2025; and wouldn’t you know it? That date is almost here. Dredge’s iOS App Store listing has been updated with this new release date, but the Android Google Play listing is not yet live. Oh I do love to be beside the seaside Aside from the usual casual fun of fishing, Dredge boasts a surprisingly in-depth upgrade system and plenty of Lovecraftian horror for you to enjoy. No word yet on what DLC will be made available, as the mainline entry already has a few expansions that widen the scope of the archipelago. But if this is the final release date for Dredge I’m sure that more than a few of you are excited to see it finally arrive. And with its low-poly aesthetic but engaging visual style I think that it’ll find a very suitable place as a firm favourite for mobile gamers. Is the Magnificent 7 trade in big trouble? Is the Magnificent 7 trade in big trouble? So much for the untouchable “Magnificent 7 trade.” Only one of the big-cap tech components — Meta (META) — has delivered double-digit gains year to date.Amazon is the only other Mag 7 component to be up on the year to the tune of 5.9%, slightly ahead of the 3.4% increase for the S&P 500 (^GSPC). The other Mag 7 components Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), Apple (AAPL), Nvidia (NVDA), Microsoft (MSFT), and Tesla (TSLA) are all down year to date, with an average drop of 3% based on Yahoo Finance’s calculations. So what gives? Fears that the group as a whole is spending way too much to build out AI infrastructure, for starters.
