  1. Working the Night Shift? Here’s How to Take Care of Yourself. Working the Night Shift? Here’s How to Take Care of Yourself. When Samantha Shaw took a new job as a research technician for a sleep-related study at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in 2021, she was excited to work on a cause that felt personal. Since high school, she said, she had trouble falling and staying asleep, so she jumped at the chance to work with experts in the field. The researchers were looking into whether a medication could help with excessive daytime sleepiness in people who worked night shifts, often in transportation or construction, that started between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. Ms. Shaw, 27, found the work enjoyable. She also became a shift worker herself — often clocking in between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., heading home in the early afternoon and then slinking into bed around 6 p.m. Despite her exhaustion, she’d struggle to fall asleep, sometimes getting fewer than four or five hours before it was time to wake up. She began drinking up to six cups of coffee a day, developed frequent colds and had little time to make friends. Insomnia, poor sleep quality and short sleep duration are common among the 11 million people in the United States who work night shifts, according to federal officials. And shift workers often struggle to follow healthy diets or maintain relationships with family and friends. That can have serious long-term consequences for health, said Jeanne F. Duffy, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School who co-led the study at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. How shift work affects you Research suggests that shift workers have higher risks of developing various health conditions like gastrointestinal disorders, mood disorders and cardiovascular disease. They are also more likely to be involved in car crashes and to develop infections like colds, flus and stomach viruses. “Our whole physiology is oriented to being asleep at night and awake during the day,” Dr. Duffy said. “So when you try to stay awake at night to work, you’re fighting this internal biology.” Shift workers are also at higher risk for obesity and Type 2 diabetes, said Michelle Drerup, director of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program at the Cleveland Clinic. That’s in part because it’s challenging to eat healthfully while working at night, she said. When “lunch time” comes around at 12:30 a.m., for example, what is available for a worker to eat? “Well, it’s stuff in the vending machine if they haven’t prepared food,” Dr. Drerup said. Night shift hours have also been described as “unsocial” in the scientific literature because they conflict with the usual rhythms of society. That can strain family dynamics and, as in Ms. Shaw’s experience, put a damper on socializing. If a worker then tries “to keep up with social and health responsibilities” at the cost of their own rest, they’re left with “less time to recover from work,” said Imelda Wong, an occupational hygienist and epidemiologist who works for the Ministry of Health in British Columbia. What to do during and after work Sleep experts make many of the same health recommendations for shift workers as they do for everyone else. Maintaining a healthy diet is key for preventing some of the chronic diseases shift workers are at risk for. When working unusual hours, try to prepare healthy foods that are easy to bring to work, like vegetables, hummus, fresh fruit and almonds, Dr. Drerup said. “Planning ahead is essential,” she added, such as doubling recipes and freezing individual portions on the weekend or your days off. If your energy is flagging during a shift, even just a 15 to 20 minute power nap (if you can find a quiet spot to take it) can help you feel more alert and refreshed, Dr. Duffy said. To make falling asleep easier when you get home, be mindful of how much caffeine you consume throughout your shift. Dr. Drerup recommended limiting yourself to no more than two cups of coffee within the first few hours of your shift, and to avoid drinking any for the last four to five hours. Once you’re home, dim the lights around your house. Bright lights cue your body to wake up, which can make it harder to fall asleep, Dr. Wong said. Then, get to sleep as quickly as possible, she said. Blackout curtains, sleep masks and white noise machines can help create a sleep-conducive environment, Dr. Drerup said. If you have daytime responsibilities that you can’t sleep through, such as meeting your kids at the school bus, Dr. Drerup said, try to schedule naps before and after such interruptions. A shared responsibility While there are many things you can do to make shift work a little less hard on your body, some of that responsibility falls on employers, too, Dr. Wong said. They can help night shift workers by avoiding scheduling them for consecutive nights, keeping shifts to eight hours or less and providing meal and rest breaks, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. As for Ms. Shaw, the more than two years of overnight work heightened her appreciation for how disruptive shift work can be. The study she was working on ended in April, and she said it took her about four months to return to her normal sleep pattern. When asked if she would work those hours again, she was hesitant. It would depend on the project, Ms. Shaw said, “because it did take a toll on my physical health and my mental health.” Source link #Working #Night #Shift #Heres #Care Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  3. Jesse Welles, a Folk Musician Who Sings the News, Is Turning the Page Jesse Welles, a Folk Musician Who Sings the News, Is Turning the Page In a small home recording studio on a Monday afternoon in January, Jesse Welles sat with a guitar on his lap, dressed head-to-toe in ******. Welles, a singer-songwriter with a shaggy, dirty-blond mane and a sandpapery voice, has risen to recent prominence posting videos to social media of himself alone in the woods near his home in northwest Arkansas, performing wryly funny, politically engaged folk songs. He’s managed to turn subjects like the war in Gaza, the rise of the weight-loss drug Ozempic and the rapaciousness of United Healthcare’s business model into viral hits on TikTok and Instagram, building an audience of more than 2 million followers on those platforms. But the song he was recording in that basement in East Nashville, “Simple Gifts,” is a different beast. As he delicately plucked his acoustic guitar, he sang its earnest opening lines — “Slouching towards the sky’s extent from the edges of a waste / Was something darker than a hope, something brighter still than fate” — sketching out an imagistic tableau untouched by current events. Welles’s new album, “Middle,” due Feb. 21, is similarly minded. “The only filter placed on it was I wasn’t doing topical songs for this project,” he said. “These are ones that are self-indulgent, or at least I feel like they are at times. I like to do both. They’re two different mediums.” The producer, Eddie Spear, rose from behind a mixing board and adjusted the microphone in front of Welles. Most of the songs on “Middle” are recorded with a full band, but for “Simple Gifts” and the album’s title track, the setup was pared down to a solitary microphone. “I’m trying to honor what people are enjoying about Jesse,” said Spear, who has also worked with Zach Bryan and Sierra Ferrell. “We thought getting a really simple capture in this way might tie in where he’s come from and honor this particular ******* of his career.” At 30, Welles has already lived a full life in the music industry. Growing up in Ozark, Ark., he latched onto music, devouring homemade cassettes of Beatles albums his grandfather recorded for him from his collection, and listening to an oldies radio station that spun classic rock, Motown and old country songs. “If the South is 10 or 15 years behind the times, Ozark was about 30 years,” he said. At 11, he used money he’d saved to buy a guitar at Walmart that became his near-constant companion: “I brought it to school, to the library.” At the public library in nearby Fayetteville, he discovered Smithsonian Folkways’ “Anthology of American Folk Music” and Bob Dylan’s 1962 self-titled debut. Welles had been told his voice sounded like “burnt toast,” but after a classmate on the school bus introduced him to Nirvana, he had an epiphany about his own singing: “I’m listening, going, ‘I could do something like that.’ I can’t do Robert Plant, but maybe I could do Cobain.” As a teenager, Welles played in bands, learning his favorite songs and writing his own. On holiday breaks, he borrowed a drum kit from the school’s band director and set up a home recording studio in his mother’s garage, then burned his songs onto CDs he’d sell at school. “I’d end up with seasonal albums,” he said. After high school, he kept churning out tracks, some under the name Jeh Sea Wells, others with the bands Dead Indian and Cosmic American. The music from this ******* included acoustic folk songs and loud, psychedelic garage-rock. The ever-growing catalog suggested a musical aesthetic more about the process than the product. “You can’t get precious about it,” Welles said. “It takes some serious hubris to think you’re going to write a masterpiece.” For him, the goal was always “just make a body of work.” At 22, Welles moved to Nashville, formed a band simply called Welles and signed with 300 Entertainment, making him label mates with Young Thug and Fetty Wap. The band released an album of angsty grunge titled “Red Trees and White Trashes” in 2018 and toured relentlessly, opening for Greta Van Fleet and Highly Suspect and playing festivals including Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits. Being on a label meant “jumping through the same hoops as everybody before you,” he said, like playing 500 shows in two years and building from there. “Then, there you are 500 shows later, and nothing to show for it. When you’ve got that many folks involved, it’s an investment. They want something to pop off. When it doesn’t, and you’ve done all the festivals, the music video, the tours, and they’ve moved on to something else, there’s no one left for them to blame but you, and there’s no one for me to blame but me.” Dejected, he returned to Arkansas, intent on putting his rock ’n’ roll dreams to bed. “I was reading a lot and got really big into running,” he said. “I was like, ‘I’m going to imagine my life without playing music at all.’” It didn’t take. In late 2023, he installed TikTok on his phone and noticed a profusion of musicians playing cover songs in his feed. He started doing the same: the Blaze Foley song “Clay Pigeons,” popularized by John Prine; Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright”; Tom Petty’s “You Don’t Know How It Feels.” They gained traction, so he kept it up. “Then my old man had a heart attack, and something just snapped in me,” Welles said. “I started singing the news. It’s a way to make sense of what’s going on around me.” Welles’s topical folk songs deftly blend the slightly whimsical with the deadly serious. The jaunty “Walmart” opens with the narrator watching “a toddler eat a ********** on a cart of Keystone beer,” but the song evolves into a subtly searing indictment of predatory big-box capitalism. “War Isn’t *******” is an angry protest anthem filled with sardonic lyrics that challenge conventional wisdom: “War isn’t *******, that’s what they say / When you’re fighting the ******, *******’s OK.” “He doesn’t play as a Hollywood elite making Hollywood elite statements,” said Matt Quinn, the lead singer of the band Mt. Joy, who collaborated with Welles on a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” that was released in October. “It’s not easy to make topical songs in this political environment and not come off as partisan. He’s done a really good job finding the humanity in tricky issues and bringing everybody to the table.” “Singing the news,” as Welles calls it, created a genuine buzz. Welles was invited to play Farm Aid in September, where Dave Matthews introduced him as “one of the best songwriters I’ve ever heard in my life.” His current tour of mid-sized clubs, running through April 10, sold out within two days of going on *****. Despite all indications that this upturn has been driven by songs he’d ripped from the headlines, he’s shrugged off any pressure to lean on them for the new album. Consequences be damned. “I’ve been failing at this my entire life,” he said. “I’m familiar with the feeling. I’m OK with it.” The songs on “Middle” aren’t completely walled off from the world. The exuberant, tightly crafted “Horses” references U.S. foreign policy but does so in service of a broader meditation on love and hate. The galloping “War Is a God” feels like an ominous, biblical parable that’s drenched in the daily stream of bloody images out of Gaza, Ukraine, Haiti and elsewhere, without ever mentioning them. Much of the rest of the album surfs between surrealistic fantasy worlds and Welles’s own inner life. His dexterous writing and the tough, bare-bones arrangements can’t help but recall many of those classic rockers he grew up listening to — Dylan, Petty, Neil Young. If it turns out this isn’t what his growing fan base wants to hear, that’s fine. He continues to post a steady churn of all manner of songs on social media. “The cool thing about putting them up immediately is knowing even if I thought it was a daggum masterpiece, you put it up and nobody’s keen on it, there’s your sign,” he said. “Move on to the next one.” Source link #Jesse #Welles #Folk #Musician #Sings #News #Turning #Page Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  5. Saber got the contract to develop Halo Anniversary because its CEO offered to do it for free Saber got the contract to develop Halo Anniversary because its CEO offered to do it for free The 2011 remake of Halo: Combat Evolved was developed by Saber Interactive because, according to its CEO, he offered to do it for free. In the second part of an ongoing interview with Saber CEO and co-founder Matthew Karch on Game File, Karch told journalist Stephen Totilo about the numerous games Saber had developed in its early days, when it was just making enough money to release each game. “The hardest thing about being in independent development is relying on somebody else,” Karch said, referring to games like Will Rock, TimeShift and Inversion, which all failed to make the studio royalties for one reason or another. However, when Saber was asked to pitch to Microsoft for the chance to remaster the original Halo game, Karch said he decided to tell the platform holder that the estimated cost to make the game would be zero. According to Karch, the Xbox executive was shocked, but Karch believed it was the right thing to do for Saber’s reputation. “I said I’d do it for free, because it’s Halo,” he explained. “It’s the biggest franchise in the world at the time. I said: ‘It’s like putting a Harvard diploma on your wall. Everyone in the world is going to want to work with me after they see that I’ve worked on this last Halo game, and it is going to open up doors. So I’ll ***** it up and I’ll do it at a loss.’” After Xbox said he had to propose some sort of number, Karch said he proposed $4 million, assuming no other studio would be able to make such a low bid, mainly because his studio’s original location of St Petersburg, Russia was a very cheap location to work from. Saber got the job and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary was released on Xbox 360 in 2011, but according to Karch, Microsoft “applied certain clauses” to the contract which “reduced his royalty to zero”. Karch says he believes Saber was given the Halo Anniversary contract because he offered to do it much cheaper than anyone else. Saber’s reward would eventually come, albeit as a result of what Karch said was an accident. The studio was given the task of making a similar remaster of Halo 2, which would eventually evolve to become part of Halo: The Master Chief Collection (the various parts of which were worked on by different studios). One of its new tasks working on The Master Chief Collection was porting its Xbox 360 remaster Halo Anniversary to the Xbox One, but Karch said Microsoft forgot to send a contract for that part of the work until just before the game was released. According to Karch, he refused to sign the contract unless Microsoft removed the clause that killed the previous Halo Anniversary royalties. Microsoft, who Karch called “good guys”, agreed to modify the contract, and Saber’s royalties for its part in The Master Chief Collection amounted to what Karch says was tens of millions of dollars. Karch said Microsoft’s contractual oversight was what gave Saber the money it needed to stop relying on publishers. “We’ve watched other people make money on our work,” he recalled telling his partner Andrey Iones. “Now we’re going to make money on our own.” Last year Embracer sold off Saber Interactive, the group home to studios 3D Realms, Slipgate Ironworks and more, to a group of private investors for $247 million. COO Tim Willits then took to X to confirm that despite the *****, its ongoing projects Jurassic Park: Survival and John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando were still in development. The phone packed budget hardware and was made available in two storage variants—64GB and 128GB—both of which came with 4GB of RAM. As per recent leaks, Samsung is now preparing to launch a 5G version of the phone. The Galaxy A06 5G is said to have a different processor and a new leak also hints at the possibility of a slightly different design. Tipster Sudhanshu Ambhore (@sudhanshu1414) shared the complete specifications of the upcoming budget Galaxy A06 5G via a post on X. The tipster mentions that the phone will have a 6.7-inch HD+ LCD display with a 90Hz refresh rate, and a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 SoC, which is different from the 4G model’s MediaTek Helio G85 SoC. The Galaxy A06 5G will offer 5G radios and Wi-Fi 5 in terms of communication standards and will have a side-mounted fingerprint reader as well, as per the tipster. Cameras could include a 50-megapixel primary sensor and a 2-megapixel camera for handling depth data when using the Portrait mode. Selfies is said to be handled by an 8-megapixel front-facing camera. The phone is tipped to pack a 5,000mAh battery and offer 25W wired charging. Unlike the Galaxy A06 4G, the 5G model will reportedly be offered in three variants. 12. Euclid Space Telescope Discovers Rare Einstein Ring, Revealing Dark Matter Secrets Euclid Space Telescope Discovers Rare Einstein Ring, Revealing Dark Matter Secrets A rare Einstein ring has been detected by the Euclid space telescope, offering valuable insights into dark matter distribution. The phenomenon, created by the gravitational lensing effect of a galaxy located nearly 600 million light-years away, has provided researchers with a means to analyse the mass and composition of the lensing galaxy. The discovery occurred as Euclid commenced its mission to construct an extensive 3D map of the universe. Dark Matter Insights from Gravitational Lensing According to research published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, the gravitational lens responsible for this Einstein ring has been identified as the galaxy NGC 6505. Situated around 590 million light-years from Earth, the galaxy’s mass is significant enough to bend light from a more distant source, forming a nearly perfect circle. This alignment has enabled scientists to examine the lensing galaxy’s central region, where dark matter presence is notably lower than expected. As reported by space.com, the research team has referred to this structure as “Altieri’s lens,” named after astronomer Bruno Altieri, who played a key role in its identification. The lensing effect allows astronomers to measure the mass distribution of NGC 6505, revealing that dark matter accounts for approximately 11 percent of the central region’s total mass. Giulia Despali, a researcher at the University of Bologna, stated that this percentage contrasts sharply with dark matter’s estimated 85 percent contribution to the universe’s overall mass. Einstein Rings and Their Significance The discovery of an Einstein ring aligns with Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity, which predicts the warping of space-time by massive objects. Strong gravitational lenses, such as the one seen in NGC 6505, provide a method for mapping the otherwise invisible distribution of dark matter. Massimo Meneghetti, a researcher at the National Institute for Astrophysics, explained that while galaxies at this distance are not typically powerful enough to form strong lenses, NGC 6505’s dense central mass has enabled this rare event. The nearly perfect symmetry of the ring suggests a precise alignment between the background light source, the lensing galaxy, and the telescope. Euclid’s Mission and Future Discoveries The Euclid telescope, launched in July 2023 by the European Space Agency (ESA), is designed to examine the dark universe by mapping cosmic structures over the past 10 billion years. Strong gravitational lenses such as Altieri’s lens are expected to be rare, with scientists estimating that no more than 20 similar structures will be identified over the mission’s course. Despite this rarity, Euclid is projected to locate over 100,000 additional gravitational lensing events in its study of 14,000 square degrees of the sky. This extensive mapping will assist researchers in analysing the distribution of dark matter and dark energy across different galaxies and their evolution over time. 13. Hostage mother gets first sign of life from son shackled in Gaza tunnel Hostage mother gets first sign of life from son shackled in Gaza tunnel By Michal Yaakov Itzhaki and Maayan Lubell TEL AVIV (Reuters) – Nearly 500 days after ****** gunmen seized him from a roadside bomb shelter in southern Israel, Alon Ohel managed to get a message out from the Gaza tunnel where he is being held by the ************ militants. He sent a birthday wish for his sister via two other hostages who had been held with him and were freed on Saturday, his mother Idit Ohel said. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. She is overjoyed to know her son is alive but has been unable to sleep now she knows the conditions of his captivity. “Alon has been in the tunnels all this time,” Ohel told Reuters in an interview. “(He) hasn’t seen sunlight, doesn’t know the difference between day and night, has gotten little food – about one (piece of) bread a day.” Ohel, a pianist, turned 24 on Monday. He was wounded by a grenade thrown into the bomb shelter where he had taken cover with almost 30 people on October 7, 2023 as they fled the attack led by ****** gunmen on a music party. “He cannot see in his right eye because of the shrapnel,” Ohel said. “And there are shackles on his legs.” Those details were relayed to her by an army officer on Sunday from Or Levy and Eli Sharabi who were released on Saturday with another hostage, Ohad Ben Ami. Their gaunt, pale and skeletal appearance shocked Israel. They looked in worse condition than most of the 18 other hostages freed since a ceasefire between Israel and ****** began on January 19. Ofer Kalderon, 54, released on February 1 said in a statement on Monday that he was held in tunnels, saw no daylight, received little food and was not allowed to shower. The mother of Romi Gonen, released on January 19, told Reuters her daughter had lost around 10 kg (22 pounds) and did not see daylight in captivity. “There was food and they didn’t get food,” said Meirav Leshem Gonen. Israel has rejected suggestions that hostages are deprived of food because of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, brought on by its military offensive launched after the ******-led attack. 14. Cisco: We will get better on AI power consumption Cisco: We will get better on AI power consumption At Cisco Live EMEA in Amsterdam, the networking giant launched a number of artificial intelligence (AI) and datacentre infrastructure products and opened up over some of the tricky issues around supporting the intense energy demands that AI workloads make of current systems, that have been a subject of discussion and concern since ChatGPT went mainstream at the end of 2022. Last year, National Grid CEO John Pettigrew said AI would be a significant factor in an anticipated sixfold increase in datacentre power requirements between now and the mid-2030s, and a more recently published RAND research report estimated that AI-driven compute would add 68GW (gigawatts) of power demand worldwide by 2027 – almost as much electricity as is consumed by California alone – and over 325GW by 2030. Tom Gillis, senior vice-president and general manager of Cisco’s security, datacentre, internet and cloud infrastructure group, spoke of an approaching inflection point given the astonishing power requirements of building datacentres fit for the AI era. And in conversation with Computer Weekly on the fringes of the show, Cisco executive vice-president and chief product officer Jeetu Patel said that while the firm rightly acknowledges the criticality of sustainability, it believes that it is helping keep things moving in the right direction on this issue. “The larger sustainability issue we should keep in mind is that our products are getting more and more efficient from a power perspective,” said Patel. However, he continued, if the use case that naturally arises from this improving efficiency is that Cisco users feel comfortable running more and more AI workloads across its infrastructure, the consequential rise in power consumption will quickly wipe out the gains made from the more efficient, probably liquid-cooled, electronics. “The way I think about this is that you have to get AI to a point where intelligent outcomes come about from AI – because it is smart enough – and that’s the race right now. Once we get there, AI will be able to help us solve a lot of power problems and sustainability problems,” said Patel. Trump’s impact on the environment Asked whether or not the second Trump administration’s environmental policies – which include an increased commitment to exploiting the US’s fossil fuel reserves and the country’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement that aims to limit global heating to 1.5˚C – would impact Cisco’s sustainability goals, Patel said it was too early to tell how things would pan out over the next four years. However, he said, it is clear that the tech industry today finds itself in both a compute- and energy-constrained environment, particularly in regard to the appetite for power that AI workloads have. “We will see some major breakthroughs on that front that reduce the cost of compute, and therefore reduce the cost of power consumption,” he said. “For example, DeepSeek. DeepSeek might have actually been very good for the environment, because what it did was taught the models to train at a lower cost and identify techniques that can actually be more efficient. “This then will allow you to get many, many more models built at a fraction of the cost of what you could do,” he suggested. 16. Good news for Saints as King set to return to training Good news for Saints as King set to return to training Max King is set for a return to full AFL training next week in some badly needed good news on the injury front for St Kilda. The Saints key forward was among three frontline players injured on a morning of carnage last Friday at training. While Jack Sinclair’s hamstring has sidelined him for four weeks and Mason Wood is out for two to three weeks with a sore quad, the news is much more positive about King. “Max will have a lighter week as a precaution, but will be back to full training next week,” Saints football boss David Misson said in a club statement. King has had a rotten run with injury, including a knee problem last year that restricted him to only 12 games. The Saints have already lost young gun Mattaes Phillipou for another nine to 10 weeks with a leg stress fracture. Rowan Marshall could play in round one as he recovers from a pelvis injury, while Liam Henry (knee) is about to return to full training. Dougal Howard is recovering from shoulder surgery last week and Paddy Dow is sidelined indefinitely after a serious knee infection. Meanwhile, Hawthorn have confirmed young key forward Calsher Dear will miss the start of the season because of a lower back stress fracture. Dear has been on a rehabilitation program since December and scans have shown he needs more time to recover. He had an impressive debut season last year, kicking 25 goals in 17 games Melbourne defender Judd McVee hurt his right hamstring at training on Wednesday, with the Demons awaiting the results of scans. “Fingers crossed it’s not significant, but we will know more shortly,” said Melbourne football boss Alan Richardson. Vice-captain Jack Viney is sidelined this week with a rib injury and young gun Caleb Windsor is recovering from a skin infection. The club added Christian Salem and Jack Bowey missed Wednesday training due to illness. Gold Coast reveal bold new Gather Round design with pink jumper already dividing fans Gold Coast reveal bold new Gather Round design with pink jumper already dividing fans Just months after they completely rebranded, Gold Coast have released a striking new jumper. The Suns will become the first-ever team in the AFL to wear predominately pink in a match when they wear their new pink and grey number designed for Gather Round. They take on North Melbourne in the Barossa Valley. And Gold Coast have declared the jumper is part of a bid to “set new boundaries beyond those imposed on us in 2025”. The Suns’ new logo features the letters G and C and a waveform. It features prominently in all three of the jumpers they have unveiled for this season. They say this one pays tribute to “the quintessential pink skies of a Gold Coast sunrise and reflects the evolution of the Gold Coast Suns — modern, agile and unshackled from long-standing tradition”. 22. Cisco Live EMEA: Network supplier tightens AI embrace Cisco Live EMEA: Network supplier tightens AI embrace In the opening keynote at its annual Cisco Live EMEA event, regional leadership moved to cement the networking giant’s embrace of artificial intelligence (AI) with a raft of technology launches, some of them previously trailed. Marking the supplier’s 40th anniversary, EMEA president Oliver Tuszik spoke about how the organisation began with the idea of connecting two networks together, and how, since 1985, it has acted as a steward and innovator as this simple concept origin became a foundational platform for all organisations. Tuszik also described how over the past two or three years, the pace of innovation has ramped up – with analysts at Gartner now predicting the firm will see almost 11% growth in the region this year. If this growth indeed materialises, Cisco believes it will come not just from organisations spending after a fallow *******, but from organisations trying to become technology companies themselves. “I’m very positive that we can manage these challenges and deal with the disruption. We have the power and experience of 40 years of working together,” said Tuszik. “Cisco is in a unique position to help guide our customers through the incredible change we’re seeing right now across industries,” he added. “From the changing nature of the workplace to the AI revolution in datacentre and network infrastructure, and the need for digital resilience at all levels, Cisco has solutions for our customers’ biggest challenges.” With AI clearly driving this, Cisco cited a recent study conducted on its behalf that found 85% of customers felt they “needed” to adopt AI within 18 months lest they start to fall behind, but only 12% globally, and 7% in Europe, said they were ready for this. The data show there are three things behind this – skills and knowledge gaps, limitations to existing network infrastructure, and security. All of these problems, the supplier says, are addressable, and it is this goal that is fuelling its product and service pipelines, the output of which was the main reason 17,000 people showed up at Amsterdam’s RAI conference centre. The core introductions made at Cisco Live EMEA centred on AI infrastructure and datacentre solutions for both enterprise and service provider customers. These include the launch of Cisco N9300 Smart Switches with its Hypershield network security fabric onboard, designed to enhance AI datacentre architectures by embedding services directly into the network as opposed to on the endpoint; Cisco Hybrid Mesh Firewall, a distributed security fabric to bring zero-trust segmentation and guard against app vulnerabilities; Cisco Agile Services Networking, an architecture for service providers to enable AI connectivity, supported by Silicon One-powered platforms, coherent pluggable optics and provider management; and finally, the debut of the Nvidia MGX-based Cisco UCS C845A M8 server, designed specifically to offer sufficient compute power for emerging AI use cases. In other areas, Cisco added hybrid private access features to its zero-trust network access (ZTNA) proposition, expanded its Wi-Fi 7 access point portfolio to target small and mid-size deployments, and added both an AI assistant to Webex Contact Center and new support for bring-your-own-device (BYOD) across Webex. Finally, on the security and resilience side, it is introducing traffic insights to Cisco ThousandEyes, and unveiling a number of new integrations with recently acquired Splunk. 24. Mom Receives Shocking Stage 3 Colon ******* Diagnosis at 25 — Hours Before It Nearly Turned Fatal Mom Receives Shocking Stage 3 Colon ******* Diagnosis at 25 — Hours Before It Nearly Turned Fatal A mom was told she had a stomach bug — but a scary episode of vomiting a “********** tar”-like substance led to a ******* diagnosis, sepsis, and emergency surgery. Chloe Wakelin was 25 when she began experiencing stomach flu-like symptoms in 2023 — but as a daycare worker and the mom of a 6-year-old, she assumed she’d picked up a bug from one of the kids. When the symptoms — bloating, nausea, fatigue — persisted, she visited her doctor. After tests for Crohn’s Disease and irritable bowel syndrome came back negative, her doctor said it was, indeed, just a stomach bug, Wakelin told Kennedy News and Media via The Daily Mail. Wakelin, who hails from the English town of Rochdale, says her symptoms were easy to dismiss because “I didn’t have the ‘typical’ symptoms for bowel *******,” which the Mayo Clinic says include bloody stool and weight loss. Kennedy News and Media Chloe Wakelin rests in the hospital after stage 3 bowel ******* diagnosis. Related: Woman Goes into Hospital for Colon Surgery, Wakes Up to Hysterectomy After Doctors Found Tumor ‘Cemented to Uterus’ (Exclusive) Her condition deteriorated in December of 2023, when she threw up something she described as “like ********** tar.” She visited the hospital, but says she wasn’t given any tests until she returned a month later — this time, when her skin began “turning yellow.” Jaundice — yellowing of the skin and eyes — is a visible sign that something is wrong with the liver, so Wakelin says she was finally given a scan. That’s when doctors discovered a tumor in her colon, and realized she had already developed sepsis, a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body responds improperly to an infection. She was told she needed to have a portion of her bowel removed immediately. “I was told that if I didn’t have the surgery, I would have had 12 hours to live because my kidney and my liver were failing,” she said. Doctors removed 25 cm of her bowel, along with her lymph nodes, due to the *******’s spread. She was fitted with a stoma in her stomach, which provides an external way for waste to leave the body, where it’s collected in an ostomy bag. It just felt like everything had crumbled around me,” Wakelin told the outlet. “You always think you’re too young at 25 because it’s typically a ******* that affects older people,” Wakelin says, adding that she’s sharing her story to help raise awareness of colon ******* in young people. Rates of colon ******* diagnoses — and deaths from the disease — have steadily increased in people under 50, the American ******* Society has said. “I’d just like to remind everyone to not be ashamed to go to their GP about any symptoms they may be having, no matter your age,” Wakelin said. “It can affect anyone.” Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE’s free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.
