Elden Ring Nightreign Release Date Announced
FromSoftware and Bandai Namco have announced the release date for Elden Ring Nightreign. The game is set to launch on May 30, 2025 and will retail for $40 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
The news off the release date confirms an earlier Insider Gaming exclusive that more information on the game was scheduled for this week.
In addition to the release date confirmation, the studio also released a new trailer for Elden Ring Nightreign, showing off more gameplay from the upcoming co-op title.
Network Test Sessions Soon
With the Elden Ring Nightreign release date confirmed, the next step is the network playtest for the game. Starting February 14, those who were selected for participation will be able to play a small portion of the game.
“This large-scale Network Stress Test is designed to evaluate various aspects of the online system’s functionality and performance,” Bandai Namco said. “We are looking forward to your cooperation to make Elden Ring Nightreign even better.”

Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge was teased at the company’s Galaxy Unpacked event earlier this month. While the South Korean tech giant has not shared any details about the smartphone, it appears to have been listed on the GeekBench benchmarking site with key specifications. The handset will join the Galaxy S25 series alongside the base model, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra. Notably, the Galaxy S25 Edge is confirmed to be thinner than the rest of the phones in the series.

An unnamed Samsung smartphone is currently listed on the GeekBench database with the model number SM-S937B. Based on the specifications mentioned and the model number, it is likely the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge. In the listing, the handset received a single-core score of 2,806 and a multi-core score of 8,416. It has 10.69GB of RAM which could translate to 12GB on paper. The device is listed to run on the Android 15 operating system.
The listed Samsung phone features a Qualcomm ARMv8 octa-core chipset with the base CPU core clocked at 3.53GHz. It has two performance cores with a clock speed of 4.47GHz and six efficiency cores clocked at 3.53GHz. The CPU speeds correspond to the recently released Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, with optimisations from the tech giant. Notably, the smartphone is rumoured to be launched around April this year.

As per previous reports, the upcoming smartphone is expected to feature a 6.4mm thin profile, with the thickness around the camera module reaching 8.3mm. Based on the images seen at the Galaxy Unpacked event, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge will sport a dual rear camera setup.
It is rumoured to arrive with a 200-megapixel primary sensor, which is said to be the Samsung ISOCELL HP2, and a 12-megapixel ultrawide angle camera. It will likely not feature a dedicated telephoto lens.
Additionally, a report claims that the handset could be backed by a 3,900mAh battery. This would be smaller than the rest of the Galaxy S25 lineup, with the base model in the series featuring a 4,000mAh battery. The smartphone could support 25W wired charging.

U.S. consumer prices rose faster than expected in January in a sign progress on inflation may remain stalled, data showed on Wednesday, as Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell heads to the U.S. Congress for a second day of testimony.
Rising prices for housing, food and energy pushed the Consumer Price Index up at a three per cent annual rate in January versus 2.9 per cent the month before.
The change in the Consumer Price Index was slightly above analysts’ expectations, and is likely to bolster reluctance at the Fed to cut interest rates any further as policymakers wait for signs that price pressures in the economy will continue to ease.
The jump in consumer staples, with gas prices up 1.8 per cent over the month and food at home up half a percentage point, could also feed into public expectations about inflation that the Fed feels are important to control.

Powell appears today before the House Financial Services Committee at 10 a.m. Eastern (1500 GMT) and typically would repeat the same opening statement delivered in a Tuesday hearing before the Senate Banking Committee.

Inflation has been the central bank’s top concern since it began to surge in 2021 to the highest levels since the 1980s and prompted the Fed to approve a rapid set of rate increases.

Inflation has since eased back towards the central bank’s two per cent target.
But after beginning to cut rates last year the Fed has since moved to the sidelines with policymakers saying they are prepared to stay on hold until inflation resumes its decline and they get more clarity on the direction of the economy under the new Trump administration.
“We do not need to be in a hurry,” Powell told the Senate Banking Committee in a hearing on Tuesday.

That session strayed far beyond monetary policy as lawmakers questioned Powell about his views on tariffs given the import taxes being rolled out by President Donald Trump, the integrity of the U.S. Treasury’s payments system, and the state of a separate agency, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, that may be eliminated by the new administration.

So About That Asteroid That Could Hit Earth…
On June 30, 1908, Akulina, a reindeer herder in Siberia, left her tent to greet the day. It was about 7 a.m., and all she could see for miles around her was the vast forest, standing tall against the clear blue sky. A heartbeat later, that forest vanished. A preternatural screech issued from above, and the world flushed crimson. “All around, we saw a miracle, a terrible miracle,” Akulina later recalled. An estimated 80 million trees across an 800-square-mile patch of forest—larger than the city of Houston—had been felled instantaneously.
This devastation, known as the Tunguska event, resulted from the force of a 10-to-20-megaton blast. It was so tremendous that its glow lit up the dark, moonless night sky in Northern Ireland, 3,500 miles away. And it was caused by the midair explosion of a space rock just 180 feet long.
As best as anyone can tell, if any hazardously sized asteroid were to hit Earth in the relatively near future, it would most likely be 2024 YR4, a 130-to-300-foot rock that’s essentially the same size as the asteroid that exploded over Siberia. Not long after it was discovered, just two days after it zipped right past Earth, NASA and the European Space Agency’s sky watchers calculated that 2024 YR4 has a nonzero chance of hitting Earth on December 22, 2032. Right now, the asteroid is 68 million kilometers away from the planet, but it’ll come back around. The odds of an impact in December 2032 have been fluctuating, but—based on the latest telescopic observations—they stand at just over 2 percent.
These odds will likely drop close to zero when more observations come in. But the current odds are still higher than anyone would prefer. A strike in a remote part of the world wouldn’t be a problem. But if the asteroid directly hits a city, millions could die.
However apocalyptic that might sound, the fact that we can imagine 2024 YR4’s impact is by design: Space agencies—particularly NASA—have become rather good at spotting asteroids. And two revolutionary observatories coming online in the next few years will only continue to strengthen those skills, so that the planet will have an even better shot at blocking any real threats. That people are effectively taking bets on Earth’s chance of being hit is a reason to be genuinely optimistic about the future of the world: Asteroid strikes are a rare but very real type of natural disaster, and we have never been safer from them.
Right now, NASA’s Near-Earth Object Observations Program funds several observatories whose only directive is to spot and track near-Earth asteroids and comets, just in case one of them may be bound for Earth. 2024 YR4, a relatively small asteroid by space standards, was spotted by one of those groups, the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, which has found almost 1,200 near-Earth asteroids to date. Another group of telescopes, the Catalina Sky Survey, in Arizona, has found 16,500 near-Earth asteroids since 1995. In total, the program’s observatories have collectively found close to 40,000.
Earth can’t defend itself against an asteroid if no one sees it coming. 2024 YR4 was spotted eight years in advance of its potential impact, which means that space agencies can decide to do something about it—whether that’s trying to ram into it with an uncrewed spacecraft, using a nuclear weapon to deflect or vaporize it, or evacuating the future impact site. The best chance to act may be in 2028, the asteroid’s next Earth flyby. That doesn’t leave a lot of time to plan an anti-asteroid defense mission, but the planet is certainly in a better position than it would be not knowing 2024 YR4 existed.
Asteroid spotters were still somewhat fortunate to have noticed it though. Near-Earth objects are found when they reflect starlight, and huge asteroids, the sort that could end civilization, are essentially giant spherical mirrors floating about in space—very easy to spot. As they get smaller and smaller, though, asteroids look like specks of light. An asteroid the size of 2024 YR4 is stealthy enough that astronomers may not have seen it until 2028, or even just prior to its possible impact in 2032.
This will soon be an uncommon problem. The U.S. has invested heavily in two next-generation observatories that will be able to spot alarming asteroids with ruthless efficiency. One of them is the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, a nearly complete facility atop a Chilean mountain, which was funded by both the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy. Rubin has an ambitious goal: to document everything that shimmers, explodes, or zips by in the night sky. It is a multipurpose, polymathic telescope that will look for exploding stars and distant galaxies. But it will also find an abundance of asteroids. After the Italian priest and astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi first discovered an asteroid in 1801, astronomers needed two centuries to tally 1 million of them. Thanks to an extremely wide-angle lens and a colossal nest of light-collecting mirrors, Rubin will likely double this number just a few months after it starts its survey—and plenty of the asteroids it finds may be those that linger disquietingly close to Earth’s orbit.
But Rubin, for all its strengths, will still rely on reflected starlight, which can be deceptive. If an asteroid has a dusty coating, it reflects less light than one with a shiny shell. That means that a tiny, shiny asteroid looks the same as a large, dusty space rock—and astronomers cannot tell how large it is. (This is the case with 2024 YR4, hence the size range given.)
The Near-Earth Object Surveyor, funded by NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office, works differently. After surviving a painful gantlet of funding cuts, the observatory is scheduled to launch into space before the decade’s end and make its way to a lonely spot far from Earth. Because of its sunshade and its very dark paint job, it will be an extremely cold object—which will allow its infrared, heat-seeking eyes to operate with unparalleled precision. And when viewed in infrared, a large asteroid glows brighter than a smaller one, with no exceptions.
NEO Surveyor will also be unimpeded by Earth’s obfuscating atmosphere and will even be able to spot small asteroids hidden by the bright, thermonuclear glare of the sun, where several near-Earth objects are thought to be hiding. As the name suggests, this observatory will be solely dedicated to looking for near-Earth objects, and within a decade of its operations, it should find at least 90 percent of near-Earth asteroids that are at least 460 feet long.
Such asteroids are called “city killers” because if one hits a city, it’s virtually guaranteed to destroy it. There are estimated to be 25,000 city-killer-size asteroids in near-Earth orbits, and just under half have been found. 2024 YR4–size asteroids are far more plentiful. There are 230,000 of them in near-Earth orbits, and only about 7 percent of them have been found. Some of them will have a greater than 2 percent chance of hitting us, but humanity has never been less reliant on luck to dodge this kind of space-borne catastrophe.
Achieving the next level of certainty, though, requires both Rubin and NEO Surveyor to go forward as planned. Planetary defense is an international-security issue, and NASA’s partners, particularly the European Space Agency and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, are developing their own asteroid-studying space missions and expanding their Earth-based telescopic coverage. The U.S., though, is clearly leading the way. Anti-asteroid research efforts are celebrated by the American public, and have garnered support in Congress from both Democrats and Republicans for decades.
Still, the second Trump administration has not yet outlined its space priorities, and deep funding cuts are expected for a variety of scientific programs. NASA declined to comment on the future of planetary-defense programs; a spokesperson noted in an email that they are “looking forward to hearing more about the Trump Administration’s plans for the agency.” And planetary defense could remain a priority: Elon Musk, who has so far been central to Trump’s drive to shrink the federal government, has well-documented interests in space and existential risk (albeit with more of a focus on getting humans to Mars than defending Earth). But if the cuts at the level experts fear go through, “we would face severe program disruptions at NASA, even for widely supported activities like planetary defense,” Casey Dreier, the chief of space policy at The Planetary Society, told me.
The odds of this impact happening are arguably higher than 2024 YR4’s chances of hitting Earth, but Patrick Michel, the principal investigator of Europe’s asteroid-chasing Hera mission, told me that, “at least for now, NASA keeps very active in planetary defense. And I don’t have any indication that it would change.” Even so, he notes, developing more redundancy in technology that can spot, examine, or deflect asteroids would keep Earth safer in the long run. 2024 YR4 will probably turn out to be harmless. But if it is heading Earth’s way—or the next asteroid is—the world will look to America to prevent a potentially catastrophic impact.

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday that a return to Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders was unrealistic and the Trump administration does not see NATO membership for Kyiv as part of a solution to the war triggered by Russia’s invasion.
Speaking at a meeting of Ukraine’s military allies at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Hegseth delivered the clearest and bluntest public statement so far on the new U.S. administration’s approach to the nearly three-year-old war.
He also told Washington’s NATO allies that they would have to step up and assume greater responsibility for Europe’s security.
“We want, like you, a sovereign and prosperous Ukraine. But we must start by recognising that returning to Ukraine’s pre-2014 borders is an unrealistic objective,” Hegseth told the meeting of more than 40 countries allied to Ukraine.
“Chasing this illusionary goal will only prolong the war and cause more suffering,” he added. Russia annexed the ****** Sea peninsula of Crimea from Ukraine in March 2014 and then backed pro-Russian separatists in an armed insurgency against Kyiv’s forces in the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine.
Moscow currently controls about 20% of Ukraine’s territory, mainly in the east and south. Hegseth said any durable peace must include “robust security guarantees to ensure that the war will not begin again.”
But, he said, “the United States does not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome of a negotiated settlement”. Instead, security guarantees should be backed by “capable European and non-European troops”, the Pentagon chief said.
“If these troops are deployed as peacekeepers to Ukraine at any point, they should be deployed as part of a non-NATO mission and they should not be covered under Article 5,” he said, referring to the alliance’s mutual defense clause.

I matched Mistral AI’s new Le Chat app against ChatGPT, and it did surprisingly well
French AI developer Mistral AI has brought its AI chatbot, aptly named Le Chat, to mobile devices. Le Chat is a European alternative to U.S. offerings like ChatGPT and Google Gemini and ********-based tools like DeepSeek.
Though Mistral has established a presence among AI developers, this is their first real attempt at a consumer-facing chatbot. Naturally, I wanted to test it out and see how well it worked. Although the abilities of these AI assistants overlap, it is still worth seeing if Le Chat could keep up.
I didn’t want to just test Le Chat in isolation, though. I decided to put it head-to-head against ChatGPT, the current default for many people when it comes to AI chatbots. I figured if Le Chat could hold its own in direct comparison, it was worth paying attention to.
I tested both chatbots with prompts the average person might submit to an AI chatbot to help them out. I wrote prompts to solicit both AI chatbots for advice on improving someone’s social life, solving a riddle, explaining complex issues to novices, and producing an image. Here’s what happened.
Friendly help

I started with a prompt that someone might ask an AI when in a new place and trying to figure out their social life. I asked both AI chatbots the following: “I just moved to a new city and don’t know anyone. What are some practical ways to make new friends as an adult?”
Both chatbots had some solid tips. Le Chat’s response included ten ideas with accompanying explanations, and they were solid but lacked a lot of detail. ChatGPT went much more specific in coming up with apps and other details to pursue in making friends. Le Chat could do the same with some follow-ups, but at least initially, it kept to a more generic set of advice. That might be its international flavor since some of ChatGPT’s advice would only make sense in the U.S. due to the availability of some mobile apps and kinds of activities.

I always like using wordplay and logic questions to test out AI chatbots. I went for an old classic here, challenging the AIs to answer: “I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with wind. What am I?”

Le Chat and ChatGPT were both quick to give the correct answer, though ChatGPT, for some reason, had an enthusiastic exclamation point. The chatbots’ explanations were also practically identical, suggesting that the choice between ChatGPT and Le Chat doesn’t really matter in this case.
Make sense of mortgages

To test how well the AI chatbots could explain something complex, I went with: “Can you explain how a mortgage works in simple terms for someone who has never owned a home before?”
As can be seen above, both chatbots had no problem breaking down the definitions and functions of different aspects of a mortgage. If anything, they seemed to be pulling from similar sources. I noted that Le Chat’s European origin didn’t prevent it from using American dollars as an example.
Otherwise, the only significant difference was that Le Chat’s tone was a bit more formal than ChatGPT, which offered a more conversational phrasing when describing how mortgages work.

Le Chat has multimodal capabilities, including a model for creating images. To wrap up the test, I devised a somewhat complex prompt for an image to see how the two models would compare on a visually creative task. I asked each chatbot: “Create a vibrant, high-fantasy illustration of a fearless medieval knight battling a colossal emerald-green dragon atop a mountain. The knight, in gleaming silver armor with gold engravings, wields a rune-glowing greatsword and raises his shield. The dragon coils around ancient stone ruins, smoke rising from its nostrils. A fiery sunset casts dramatic hues over swirling clouds and distant mountains.”
Both pictures look great despite notable differences in the details. The cinematic lighting and style are shared, but otherwise, the mountains, knights, and dragons are very different. Le Chat’s dragon is more of a giant snake, though the knight’s sword does have glowing runes, which ChatGPT’s image lacks.
That said, if you look closely, you will see that both images have classic AI flaws. ChatGPT’s dragon’s wings don’t seem to connect to its body, and the only visible leg is oddly placed. Le Chat’s knight has a shield that just sort of floats next to him, and the dragon’s coils are arranged more like an Escher painting than a terrifying mythical beast. And the less said about the shape of the rune-carved gravestones in ChatGPT’s image, the better.
Vive Le Chat
As expected, there’s no clear “winner” between the two chatbots so much as two solid AI assistants. Le Chat did surprise me with just how fast and efficient it is, but at least from my tests, it’s a little brusque and somewhat broad in its answers. That’s not a bad thing if you want generalized answers and advice in a hurry.
ChatGPT’s answers sometimes seemed more like what a human would say in response to the prompts, with emotion-tinged language that appeared to match the energy of the requests, even if just to seem enthusiastic about a riddle. Further, while both AI chatbots produced exciting, if very flawed images, at least ChatGPT understood that the dragon fighting a medieval knight usually has wings, even if they aren’t explicitly mentioned in the prompt.
If I were asked to pick just one, I’d probably lean toward ChatGPT, but that may be as much about familiarity as anything else. If I lived in Europe, I might opt for Le Chat simply because it is more likely to avoid any regulatory pitfalls faced by OpenAI because it is based in the region.
Otherwise, both AI chatbots can handle anything a casual AI chatbot user might toss their way. That should probably worry OpenAI as it strives to maintain a position of superiority, or at least the perception of such, against rivals like Mistral that may have the wind at their backs.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, the Xbox and PC exclusive from Ninja Theory, is reportedly coming to PS5. The action-adventure title could join other Microsoft first-party titles like Forza Horizon 5, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Age of Mythology: Retold, that are confirmed to launch on PS5 in 2025. The Xbox parent has brought several of its exclusive games to rival platforms over the past year and has said more will follow this year.
Hellblade 2 Coming to PS5 ‘Very Soon’
The information comes for Windows Central executive editor Jez Corden, who has a history of scoops on Xbox games and hardware. According to him, Hellblade 2 could be announced for PS5 at the PlayStation State of Play broadcast scheduled for this week.
Sony announced Tuesday it would hold a State of Play broadcast on February 12. The showcase is confirmed to be over 40 minutes long and will feature updates and announcements for games coming to PS5.
Responding to the State of Play news on X, Corden said Hellblade 2 could be a part of the showcase. In a reply to another user discussing if the game would arrive on PS5, Corden replied, “Not if, ‘when!’ and when is pretty soon from what I’ve been hearing.”
While he did not specify a timeline, if Hellblade 2 is indeed announced for PS5 at State of Play on Wednesday, the game could be coming to the console sooner rather than later.
Microsoft Games Coming to PS5
Since Microsoft first announced it would release some of its exclusive titles on PS5 and Nintendo Switch, the company has fully pivoted its launch strategy and committed to bringing more of its games to rival platforms.
In January, the company announced it would release Forza Horizon 5, the award-winning racing title from Playground Games, on PS5 in Spring 2025. Weeks later, Xbox confirmed Age of Mythology: Retold would arrive on PS5 in March, with Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition to follow in Spring.
Last month, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer underlined the company’s strategic shift by saying no game in Microsoft’s stable was off-limits on the question of launching on rival platforms. “What we find is we’re able to drive a better business that allows us to invest in great game lineup like you saw (at Xbox Developer Direct). And that’s our strategy. Our strategy is to allow our games to be available,” Spencer said in an interview in January.
In the interview, Spencer also suggested that Starfield, Bethesda’s space RPG exclusive to PC and Xbox, could arrive on PS5 at some point, saying there was no reason for him to “put a ring fence around any game and say ‘this game will not go to a place where it will find players, where it will have business success for us.’”
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 released on May 21, 2024, on Xbox Series S/X and PC. The narrative-driven action-adventure title is also available on Game Pass. It’s also worth noting that the game’s predecessor, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, released on PC and PS4 in 2017 and later came to Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Microsoft acquired Hellblade developer Ninja Theory in 2018, leading to Hellblade 2 launching as a PC and Xbox Series S/X exclusive.

Adobe’s is in public beta as of today, meaning the days of praying you had a chance to test it are over. The company claims that it’s the first commercially safe generative AI video model in the market. Previously, it was only available in the Adobe Premiere Pro video editor with Generative Extend, but you can also access a now.
For those unaware, Adobe’s Firefly Video Model powers the Generate Video feature, which can generate video clips from a text prompt or image. It can also edit images, turn them into videos, create 3D worlds and more. The content is “safe” for commercial use too, since the AI applies watermarks signifying which parts have AI assistance, and that can be checked with the Adobe web app’s . In other words, it’s “safe” because people can check if AI was used in the content due to embedded data.
The Firefly web app integrates with Adobe Creative Cloud apps such as Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Express and more. Three new features available on the app today include video generation and scene-to-image generation with the ability to fine-tune footage, allowing users to make images from 3D sketches, plus audio and video translation into supported languages.
Currently, there are two pricing plans: Firefly Standard and Firefly Pro. The former grants access to 2,000 video/audio credits a month and 20 five-second 1080p video generations, while the latter increases the number of credits to 7,000 and video generations to 70. A Firefly Premium plan for professionals is coming soon. You can now purchase a Firefly Standard subscription for $10 a month, while a Firefly Pro subscription costs $30 a month.

Team Ninja has released a significant update for its Ninja Gaiden 2 remaster.
Released today for consoles and PC, the patch introduces a New Game+ mode, which gives players the option to start a new game on a difficulty level they have previously cleared, with the weapons and Ninpo obtained in a previous playthrough.
The update also introduces a Photo Mode, which is accessed via the in-game Options Menu, and the ability to hide projectile weapons when they’re carried on the player’s back.
Ninja Gaiden 2 ******, a modern remaster of the 2008 Xbox 360 game, was a surprise release last month, accompanying the news that Ninja Gaiden 4 is in development.
This new remaster was developed using Unreal Engine 5, which Team Ninja said helps to “elevate everything from character visuals to environmental backgrounds”.
“In fact,” it said, “the stages, characters, effects, and lighting have all been completely redesigned and remastered to fully immerse gamers into the story’s dark ninja world.”

Texas-based neurotech startup Paradromics on Wednesday announced a strategic partnership with Saudi Arabia’s Neom and said it will establish a Brain-Computer Interface Center of Excellence in the region.
Neom is a developing area within northwest Saudi Arabia that’s touted as “a hub for innovation,” according to its website. The area’s strategic investment arm, the Neom Investment Fund, led the partnership. Paradromics declined to disclose the investment amount.
Paradromics is building a brain-computer interface, or a BCI, which is a system that deciphers brain signals and translates them into commands for external technologies. The company will work with Neom to “advance the development of BCI-based therapies” and set up the “premier center for BCI-based healthcare” in the Middle East and North Africa, it said in a release.
“Working together, we can accelerate the rate of innovation in BCI and expand access to impactful BCI-based therapies.” Paradromics CEO Matt Angle said in a statement.
Paradromics is one of several companies racing to commercialize BCIs, including Elon Musk’s startup Neuralink. Earlier this month, Neuralink announced it has implanted three human patients with its technology, according to a blog post. Precision Neuroscience and Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates-backed Synchron have also implanted their systems in humans.
None of these companies have secured the FDA’s final stamp of approval.
Paradromics’ BCI, the Connexus Direct Data Interface, is an array of tiny electrodes designed to be implanted directly into the brain tissue. The system could eventually help patients with severe paralysis regain their ability to communicate by deciphering their neural signals.
The company is gearing up to launch its first human trial this year, and announced its official patient registry in July. Paradromics’ technology has not yet been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and it still has a long way to go before commercialization. In 2023, the company received the FDA’s Breakthrough Device designation, which aims to help accelerate the go-to-market process.

The years-long effort to protect New Orleans from flooding
The city of New Orleans is still rebuilding and repairing homes that were damaged in the fallout from 2005’s Hurricane Katrina.
The storm flooded hundreds of thousands of homes in New Orleans, killed over 1,800 people and displaced millions. It remains the costliest tropical cyclone in U.S. history, with an estimated $201.3 billion in associated damages, adjusted for inflation.
After the storm, approximately one quarter of the city’s housing stock was abandoned.
“As people started to come back in and redevelop, property values shot up like crazy,” said Calvin Alexander, a long-term resident in the Lower Ninth Ward, one of the city’s hardest-hit neighborhoods.
Just one third of Lower Ninth Ward residents have returned to the neighborhood, according to Census Bureau records analyzed by The Data Center. The citywide population hasn’t fully recovered either, which adds to the municipal government’s financial issues.
Meanwhile, housing prices have skyrocketed in parts of the city with higher ground, such as the Holy Cross section of the Lower Ninth Ward, where Alexander resides. He told CNBC that the assessed value of his home has grown approximately 266% since 2005. In the same time frame, home prices across the metro area have increased nearly 71% and home prices nationwide have increased over 84%.
The federal and state governments spent over $9 billion to compensate homeowners who chose to either rebuild or abandon their properties. The so-called “Road Home Program” has been criticized for its complexity and the effects it had on low-income residents.
“Instead of basing settlements on damage to property and estimated cost to rebuild, they threw out all of that data and went with pre-storm property value instead” said Laura Paul, executive director of lowernine.org, a non-profit group which rebuilds and repairs homes in the area.
Paul noted that the use of pre-storm assessments left lower-income residents with fewer resources to rebuild. The city reports lower household income and higher poverty rates than those observed at the national level.
Many parts of the city remain exposed to risk that current insurance rates do not fully account for. In January, the Treasury Department warned that insurance premiums were spiking in disaster-prone areas like California, Florida and Louisiana.
The federal government, in association with the state of Louisiana, spent approximately $15 billion rebuilding a series of drainage canals, water pumping stations, and levees that attempt to protect local households from storms. Ironically, some aspects of these engineering systems may contribute to the region’s issue with land subsidence.
Still, the state sees a positive economic impact from the spending on storm protection. Particularly in a city with important cultural and commercial institutions, such as the Caesars Superdome and Port of New Orleans.
“We’re getting $7 of benefit for every dollar we spend on these hurricane protection systems,” said Glenn Ledet, executive director of the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority.
The state is expected to spend $50 billion over the next 50 years in an effort to keep the hurricane and storm damage risk reduction system in a good state of repair. Officials have also set a goal to elevate some 4,000 homes across the state in coming years.

The Pixel 9a will also have a 48-megapixel main sensor, 13MP ultrawide sensor and 13MP front camera. There’s a new pill-shaped camera housing instead of the familiar camera bump. It fits flush with the back of the phone, a welcome departure from previous models.
The Pixel 9a is expected to come in , the names of which are not finalized: Iris (purple), Obsidian (******), Peony (hot pink) and Porcelain (white). It’s believed the handset will cost $499 for the 128GB version and $599 for the 256GB upgrade. A Verizon mWave model will tack on an extra $50 charge as well. According to a source who spoke to Android Headlines, the smartphone on March 26, but Google will start accepting pre-orders on March 19.

Control 2 Enters Full Production As Alan Wake 2 Has Finally Recouped Development Costs
Finnish game developer Remedy has released its latest earnings report, and included in the filing are some key updates for the developer’s upcoming games. Perhaps the two biggest takeaways are the confirmation that Control 2 has now entered full production, while Alan Wake 2 has finally recouped its development costs after selling 2 million copies.
In its filing, Remedy said Control 2 “entered full production” in February 2025. “The project has verified the velocity of asset creation, established production pipelines, and is ready for scaling up for production,” the developer said.
Entering the “full production” phase is a significant milestone for any project. Another high-profile game, CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 4, entered the full production phase of development at the end of 2024.
As announced previously, Annapurna is funding 50% of Control 2’s budget, and that budget has never been disclosed and likely never will be. Annapurna is co-funding the game as part of a deal that will see Annapurna help bring Remedy’s Control and Alan Wake franchises to film and TV. The ******** gaming giant Tencent is also an investor in Remedy and its upcoming projects.
These other upcoming games include FBC: Firebreak, a multiplayer game launching in 2025 that is self-published by Remedy, as well as remakes of Max Payne 1 and 2 in partnership with Rockstar Games. Firebreak and the remakes are both now in full production.
As for Alan Wake 2, the game has now sold 2 million copies and has begun to accrue royalties for Remedy. As recently as November 2024, the game remained unprofitable for Remedy. Epic Games funded Alan Wake 2 with the agreement being that once development and publishing costs were made back, further revenue would be split between Epic and Remedy.
