‘It was the first time everyone had actually seen one’
‘It was the first time everyone had actually seen one’
*********** trail cameras have caught what’s perhaps the most unique animal on Earth outside of Sasquatch.
The footage from Flaggy Creek proves the platypus — unlike Bigfoot — is, in fact, real, even though it hasn’t made a cameo in some of its once well-inhabited hotspots for decades, according to a report from Yahoo News.
“Everyone was so happy. It was the first time everyone had actually seen one around Kuranda,” Alfred Hunter, a ranger, told Yahoo.
Kuranda was once a platypus oasis, but local elders have been concerned because the unique species hasn’t been spotted there for years, per the report.
Once observed, the animal is hard to forget. It has a duck-like bill, waterproof fur, and webbed appendages. That’s not to mention the venomous spurs the males sport on their hind feet, according to a description from the World Wildlife Fund.
The animal is only found in Australia. The WWF reported that habitat destruction and changes linked to our planet’s overheating have contributed to its dwindling population.
Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City?
A BBC story noted that locations where the creatures are usually found have dropped by 22% since 1990. What’s more, the *********** Platypus Conservancy warned that the population decline could hit 30% during the next 21 years if threats go unchecked. The conservancy listed the species as “near threatened.” It is considered “vulnerable” and “endangered” in certain parts of the country but even “common” in others, per the report.
Trail cameras are becoming powerful tools to help experts gauge population health for platypuses and other species. One recently recorded a tapir in Brazil, where it was thought to be extinct. In some cases, the video clips provide evidence of successful protection efforts.
Smart management of our environment and the creatures in it — including fish in the ocean — can help to make sure more species survive. The result can even impact our food supply.
Reducing heat-trapping air pollution and regrowing our forests are important ways to help. The International Fund for Animal ******** reported that higher Earth temperatures are contributing to habitat loss, natural disasters, and the extinction of certain animals. NASA’s experts said the higher temps are linked to a greater risk for severe weather, a contributor to habitat loss.
Adding some extra plant-based meals to your menu each week is an easy way to help. It’s a move that can limit meat-industry-related pollution, cut household food costs, and even improve your health, according to Harvard Health Publishing.
Down Under, Indigenous community knowledge has been augmented by artificial intelligence, drones, and cameras to track rare species with the goal of attaining a better understanding of their health, according to the Yahoo report.
The Flaggy Creek platypus observation is encouraging. Its presence is especially welcome to native residents like Djabugay Ewamian Elder Aunty Rita Gutchen. She said in the Yahoo story that it had been 60 years since she last saw one.
“Hopefully they’re breeding,” she added.

******** military drops flares near RAAF plane
A ******** fighter jet has dropped flares within 30 metres of an *********** military plane during a patrol flight over the South China Sea.
The Defence Department on Thursday confirmed a ******** J-16 fighter aircraft targeted a Royal *********** Air Force P-8A Poseidon in an incident on February 11.
The RAAF plane was flying over the South China Sea during daylight when flares were dropped above and in front of it, coming within 30m of the aircraft.
No *********** Defence Force personnel were injured and the plane was not damaged.
The federal government has expressed its concerns to Beijing over the “unsafe and unprofessional manoeuvre that posed a risk to the aircraft and personnel”.
“Australia expects all countries, including China, to operate their militaries in a safe and professional manner,” Defence said in a statement.
“For decades, the ADF has undertaken maritime surveillance activities in the region and does so in accordance with international law, exercising the right to freedom of navigation and overflight in international waters and airspace.”
It follows other incidents with the ******** military as Beijing expands its influence in the Indo-Pacific.
Three ******** navy warships have also been detected operating to the northeast of Australia in the Coral Sea.
The vessels, a Jiangkai-class frigate named Hengyang, a Renhai cruiser named Zunyi and Fuchi-class replenishment vessel Weishanhu – are operating within international law.
They have not sought access to an *********** port.
“Australia respects the rights of all states to exercise freedom of navigation and overflight in accordance with international law, just as we expect others to respect Australia’s right to do the same,” the statement said.

Lavos Prime has various alchemy-inspired combat abilities
You can also get yourself new Prime weapons and customisation options
Digital Extreme has just dropped some exciting news for Warframe fans as the next Prime Warframe has arrived in the popular shooter. Lavos Prime is officially here, bringing a mix of alchemical abilities, enhanced stats, and a distinctive gold-trimmed design. With increased health, shields, and an extra Naramon Polarity mod slot, this Warframe is built for both resilience and adaptability.
Warframe’s latest character, Lavos Prime, is a transmuter-themed Warframe whose story ties into the Orokin Empire. Here, he once served as a jailer to a rogue alchemist. Instead of allowing the prisoner’s execution, he transmuted his teacher into a serpent and bonded him to his left arm.
This history is reflected in Lavos Prime’s combat abilities, which combine elemental attacks with alchemy-inspired mechanics. His abilities let you consume enemies with serpent whips, leave behind a trail of freezing vials, launch transmutation probes to convert pickups into universal Primitems, and unleash fiery gel to catalyse combat.
Alongside Lavos Prime, two Prime weapons are now available – the Cedo Prime shotgun and Dual Zoren Prime twin axes. The Nimandi Prime Armor, Vitam Prime Syandana, and a Prime Transmutation Probe decoration are also available, offering additional customization options. You can also show off your style by using the exclusive Lavos Prime Glyphs.

‘A window into [the] past’
‘A window into [the] past’
The discovery of a forest should be cause for celebration. At a site in the Rocky Mountains, though, it’s a little more complicated than that.
What’s happening?
New Scientist detailed how an ancient forest was discovered in the Rocky Mountains during an archaeological survey at Wyoming’s Beartooth Plateau.
Using carbon dating, Montana State University researchers found the clutch of 30 whitebark pine trees were between 5,440 and 5,950 years old.
The trees — discovered lying down and in excellent condition about 3,100 meters above sea level — were 180 meters higher than the existing tree line, revealing a fascinating insight into the historic ecosystem.
Why is this concerning?
The discovery allows scientists “a window into past conditions,” as professor Cathy Whitlock put it. However, it was only possible because rising temperatures melted an area that had been covered by ice for thousands of years.
“While such discoveries are scientifically interesting, they are also a sad reminder of how fragile alpine ecosystems are to climate change,” Whitlock told New Scientist.
Watch now: What’s the true environmental impact of renewable energy?
What’s more, Whitlock predicts that as the global temperature continues to climb, the tree line could shift upslope in the decades to come.
While more trees on Earth aren’t usually a bad thing — because of their ability to absorb and store harmful planet-warming gases from the atmosphere — the melting of ancient ice could have profound effects on ecosystems, which might not be fully realized for years.
It also signifies just how dramatic the climate crisis is, with ice that has held for millennia finally starting to melt as the planet heats up unsustainably.
While there is scope for scientists to discover more about our planet after finding these trees, the melting of ancient ice does bring potential complications.
As the U.N. Environment Programme detailed, the melting of permafrost could lead to the exposure of once-dormant pathogens.
What can be done about the rising global temperature?
The most impactful thing we can do to slow the rate at which thermometers creep higher across the globe is to reduce our production of pollution.
It sounds like a big task, but sustainable actions can add up in a hurry. Talking to your friends and family about the collective action you can take can make the positive effects even more profound.
You can start by composting your food and garden waste, which will stop plastic trash bags from filling up so fast and later accumulating in methane-producing landfills.
Or you can look into local community solar initiatives that can reduce the amount of energy you access from the power grid, which still heavily relies on the burning of dirty fuels.
Every sustainable step you take moves us closer to a cleaner, cooler future — which, among other things, is essential to help keep ancient ice intact.

Shell Prelude FLNG: Offshore regulator NOPSEMA says hazardous gas issue needs fixing
Shell Prelude FLNG: Offshore regulator NOPSEMA says hazardous gas issue needs fixing
Shell has copped a warning from the oil and gas regulator after hazardous gases at the Prelude LNG vessel likely sent workers to the sick bay.
An inspector from offshore watchdog NOPSEMA has told the super-major there was a safety risk at the facility off the Kimberley coast because hazardous gases were likely not being dispersed in low-wind conditions.
A warning notice from the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority — obtained by The West *********** — said the issues had been ongoing for several years.
Low wind conditions occurring about two months per year would “potentially lead to exposure of the workforce to the inadequately dispersed hazardous gases”, the note said.
“Personnel on the facility have presented with symptoms of respiratory and eye irritation, typical of (but not exclusive to) hydrogen sulphide and benzene exposure,” the warning said. Benzene can cause ******* after extended exposure.
It’s understood some staff have attended the onboard medical team with minor symptoms, and have not needed treatment. None have suffered long-term effects.
NOPSEMA’s report suggested that an acid gas vent on the plant was not working as required.
Shell said work was under way for a long-term engineering solution at the vessel.
“The health and safety of our people is our number one priority,” a spokeswoman said.
“Air quality issues are experienced periodically on Prelude during low wind conditions.
“We have identified potential sources, implemented interim mitigation measures when air quality issues are present to limit exposure, and are looking at longer term engineering solutions to address the source of the issue.”
The $US10 billion-plus Prelude was among the world’s first floating liquefied gas processing ships but has been plagued by safety worries.
Prelude suffered a catastrophic failure in late 2021 after a fire, emergency shutdown, and loss of power.
About 18 months later, The West *********** revealed NOPSEMA had alleged workers were exposed to a fire or explosion risk working on a tank.

How much snow did we get? Here’s the latest snowfall reports for Augusta County and beyond
How much snow did we get? Here’s the latest snowfall reports for Augusta County and beyond
Walking down Beverley Street Tuesday morning, a few people wondered if we would get any snow at all. By noontime, that question was answered as thick (and very pretty) snowflakes started to fall getting heavier as the day unfolded.
It didn’t take long before people took to the mostly empty main street to go for a walk and enjoy a proper snow day. While there were few cars driving downtown, there were some that did and encountered near misses and backslides thinking all wheel drive might make them impervious to the slippery hills. It didn’t.
At night, the snow blanketed downtown Staunton with storefront lights and street lamps giving a warm glow to the peaceful and quiet picturesque scene.
Snowfall on Central Avenue in downtown Staunton on Tuesday evening, Feb. 11, 2025.
It’s been years since we’ve seen this much snow, so how much did we get?
How much snow did we get?
Snowfall reports came in to the National Weather Service throughout the day Tuesday and into early Wednesday morning for much of the Shenandoah Valley with Lexington getting the most snow reporting up to 13 inches. Goshen came in next at 12 inches, followed by Hermitage at 10 inches, 9.5 inches in Stuarts Draft, and Staunton reported 9 inches snowfall by Tuesday night.

Waynesboro: 6 inches snowfall reported 11:17 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11
Snow falls on Beverley Street in downtown Staunton on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025.
The deepest snowfall in several years has buried roadways in parts of the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands, said Virginia Department of Transportation’s Staunton District Wednesday morning.
“Treacherous driving conditions are found throughout the region, where some counties received up to a foot of snow from Tuesday’s winter storm,” said VDOT Staunton District.
A wintry mix is forecast for Wednesday afternoon, and could bring a coating of ice to previously plowed roadways.
“Stay off the roads as the Virginia Department of Transportation crews and contractors from the VDOT Staunton District work to make them passable.”
NWS Wednesday weather forecast for Augusta County
The snowfall has stopped and the powdery snow scenes are being replaced by a slippery, slushy mess.
A light wintry mix is possible Wednesday morning into the midday, before a steadier ******* of freezing rain occurs late Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night with ice accumulations up to two tenths of an inch expected in Augusta and Rockingham counties, according to the National Weather Service.
A winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service is in effect 3 p.m. Wednesday until 4 a.m. Thursday. A hazardous weather outlook was also issued warning of an ice storm in some areas in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Gov. Youngkin declared a state of emergency on Monday for the Commonwealth. Virginia Department of Transportation continues to remind drivers to stay off the roads.
“Roads may become impassable due to the combination of heavy, wet snow through Tuesday night, followed by significant icing Wednesday afternoon and evening,” according to the NWS winter weather advisory.
Warmer temperatures are expected to arrive on Thursday before heading into a rainy weekend. Moderate to heavy rainfall is possible Saturday through Sunday, per NWS hazardous weather outlook. The rain combined with melting snow may lead to instances of flooding Sunday through Sunday night.

Tonight, skywatchers are in for a treat as the Full Snow Moon rises.
The moon reached its peak brightness at 8:53 a.m. EST (1353 GMT) on Feb. 12, but local moonrise and moonset times will depend on your location. As the February full moon rises, Mars will remain high in the sky to the upper right of the moon, creating a delightful skywatching scene.
For those in the eastern U.S., the moon will be visible just after sunset, creating a beautiful sight against the twilight sky. It will climb quite high, reaching its peak around midnight, where it will remain visible for the rest of the night before setting with the morning sun.
A full moon happens when the moon is directly opposite the sun from our perspective on Earth, fully illuminated by sunlight. While most full moons are completely lit up, sometimes the moon’s orbit brings it into Earth’s shadow, causing a lunar eclipse (the next time this will happen will be across March 13 and March 14). February’s full moon will miss Earth’s shadow, however. This is because the moon’s orbit is tilted about five degrees relative to Earth’s path around the sun, which means the sun, Earth and moon won’t line up perfectly this time.
The Snow Moon is named for the season it falls within, as February is often one of the snowiest months in the northern hemisphere.
This month, the Snow Moon’s appearance is accompanied by several bright planets, including Jupiter and Venus. For those with a clear view of the western horizon, Venus will be visible just after sunset, and Jupiter will shine high above the Orion constellation as the evening progresses.

New York Knick it with seconds to go against Hawks
New York Knick it with seconds to go against Hawks
The New York Knicks have broken the hearts of the Atlanta Hawks, winning a thrilling NBA tie 149-148 in overtime, despite the brave efforts of Dyson Daniels.
The Knicks led by six with 10 seconds remaining, but the *********** made a big play late to steal Karl-Anthony Towns’ in-bound pass before being fouled.
Daniels made the first free throw and reduced the lead to 137-135 but missed the second. The Knicks failed to get the rebound and the Hawks got the ball to Young, who was fouled and made both to tie with 2.9 seconds to go.
In overtime, Jalen Brunson made the go-ahead jumper with 11.1 seconds left to close a thrilling final game before the All-Star break.
Towns finished with 44 points to reach 40 points in consecutive games for the first time in his career and become the fifth Knicks player to do so.
Brunson, who was the last Knicks player to do it, added 36 points and eight assists.
Trae Young had 38 points and 19 assists for the Hawks, who had a three-game winning streak snapped.
They had a chance to win it after Brunson’s jumper, but Young missed a jumper and Georges Niang a 3-pointer.
Boomers star Daniels had 23 points, four rebounds and four assists for the Hawks, who play 10 of their first 12 after the break at home.
A ninth win in 11 games sent New York into the break third in the Eastern Conference at 36-18.
In Chicago, the Bulls lost at home 128-110 to Detroit after the Pistons dominated them the previous night.
Cade Cunningham scored 29 points, while Tobias Harris and Ausar Thompson contributed 19. Jalen Duren added 16 points and 14 rebounds.
The Pistons rolled into the break with their fourth straight win after blowing out the Bulls 132-92 in the same arena on Tuesday.
Ayo Dosunmu scored 23 for Chicago, and Nikola Vucevic added 21 points and 13 rebounds. But the Bulls again had a rough time shooting 3-pointers, making nine of 41 after going 10 for 47 on Tuesday.
After being the second top scorer for the Bulls the night before, *********** Josh Giddey continued his consistent form to register 17 points, two rebounds and three assists on Wednesday.
In other matches, Jayson Tatum had 32 points and 14 rebounds as the Boston Celtics beat the San Antonio Spurs 116-103 for their third straight victory and seventh in eight games.
Paolo Banchero had 24 points and eight rebounds as the Orlando Magic shook off a cold-shooting first half to beat the Charlotte Hornets 102-86.

‘We can’t actually provide recommendations to help’
‘We can’t actually provide recommendations to help’
A first-of-its-kind study revealed a disturbing link between PFAS and kidney damage. Researchers from the Keck School of Medicine have uncovered the connection between gut problems, kidney damage, and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), analyzing these three things together for the first time.
What’s happening?
The study, published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, found that four years after increased PFAS exposure, kidney function was worse. What’s more, the researchers connected 50% of that decrease in function to changes in the gut microbiome.
After examining data from 78 participants, whose ages ranged from 17 to 22, the researchers collected blood and stool samples to measure a baseline of PFAS exposure and relative gut health. Four years later, the researchers took new samples and conducted a second round of tests on kidney function.
“We saw that exposure to PFAS was potentially altering the composition of the microbiome, associated with lower levels of beneficial bacteria and lower anti-inflammatory metabolites,” lead author Hailey Hampson said in a news release from the University of Southern California.
PFAS are known as “forever chemicals” because they do not break down once they enter the environment or human body. Though these highly toxic chemicals have been linked to health complications, including cardiovascular disease, *******, and chronic kidney disease, they are still used to manufacture nonstick and water-repellent products.
“Nearly everyone has PFAS in their blood, and these chemicals are associated with a number of negative health effects. But we don’t have any known interventions to reduce PFAS in the body, so we can’t actually provide recommendations to help,” Hampson said.
Watch now: What’s the true environmental impact of renewable energy? Why is the new research important?
The study provides new evidence that reinforces the health consequences of PFAS exposure. After completing the longitudinal research, the team provided a roadmap for future research on PFAS and kidney health. According to Hampson, they identified inflammation and oxidative stress as areas of future study so we can better understand how PFAS impact the gut microbiome.
From a health standpoint, however, the study is yet another reminder of the risks associated with PFAS exposure. As companies continue to use PFAS in their products, they not only threaten the environment but also public health.
What’s being done about PFAS exposure?
As more research indicates the dangers of PFAS, scientists hope policymakers will take action to protect the public from these forever chemicals.
“Our findings are an important piece of the puzzle about the many different health risks of PFAS, which can provide policymakers with information that helps them develop policies to protect the public from exposure to these chemicals,” senior study author Jesse A. Goodrich said.

Astoria Road between Harris Road and Oxford Road in ******* Township will be closed for “an indefinite ******* of time,” according to Montgomery County Engineer Andrew Shahan.
TRENDING STORIES:
“This closure is needed due to safety concerns regarding a landslide along the West side of Astoria Road,” Shahan said in a release.
A landslide has occurred and is now within six feet of the roadway, but the debris has not yet reached the roadway.
As reported on News Center 7 at 5:00, Shahan said an occurrence like this is rare, noting landslides are more common in southern parts of Ohio. But he also said they’ve been monitoring the erosion on the west side of Astoria Road since August.
The landside has crews worrying that the guardrail on the road would not be able to stop a car from dropping 25 feet down into the creek if it crashed into it.
Shahan said every rainfall we have only causes more erosion into the creek.
Back in November, the landslide was about 10 feet away from the edge of the pavement. In January, it changed to about 7.5 feet and now it’s even closer.
“That’s too close that the integrity of the guardrail itself, the posts that are embedded in the ground won’t be able to do their job if someone were to strike it,” Shahan said.
A detour route following Friend Road, Browns Run Road, and Oxford Road will be provided, according to the release.
Access to residences along Astoria Road will be maintained.
