NZ pace bowler hamstrung ahead of Champions Trophy
NZ pace bowler hamstrung ahead of Champions Trophy
New Zealand fast bowler Ben Sears has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan and the UAE with a hamstring tear.
Sears suffered the injury in training in Karachi on Wednesday. Scan results have shown a minor tear, which would keep Sears out of action for two weeks.
It is the latest setback for 27-year-old Sears, who only recently returned from a knee injury.
Sears’ place in the New Zealand squad has been taken by travelling reserve Jacob Duffy.
“We’re all really feeling for Ben,” New Zealand coach Gary Stead said on Friday.
“It’s always tough being ruled out of a major event at such a late stage, and it’s especially tough in Ben’s case given it would have been his first major ICC event.
“The time frames for Ben to be fit to play again meant he would likely miss the majority of the group stage, and given the short nature of the tournament we felt it was appropriate to bring in a player who is fully fit and ready to go.”
New Zealand are drawn with Bangladesh, India and Pakistan in the eight-team tournament, which begins on Wednesday with a match between New Zealand and Pakistan.

Kauai spearfisher lands 130-plus pound fish, almost dragged to the depths
Kauai spearfisher lands 130-plus pound fish, almost dragged to the depths
POIPU, Hawaii (KHON2) — A teenager on Kauai might have just nabbed the fish of a lifetime on Wednesday off Poipu.
Download the free KHON2 app for iOS or Android to stay informed on the latest news
Taelin Sugimura has been spearfishing since he was a boy, but the 18-year old never expected to catch an ulua that weighs more than 130 pounds.
It certainly looks huge in the pictures that were taken on land, but Sugimura said the 134-pound ulua looked even ******* when he spotted it in the water.
Hawaii man greeted by great white shark during ‘insane’ encounter
“Everything just went like, everything went slow motion and I watched it just swim in front of me and then it started to swim away and then I called it back to me by grunting,” he said.
Sugimura shot the ulua in the head with his speargun, but it was not a kill shot and the fish took off — Sugimura only weighs 120 pounds and the oceanic beast started to drag him to the depths.
“When my friend grabbed my heel when I was flying past him, it kind of slowed it down a little bit,” he said.
The ulua then turned around and swam back toward Sugimura, which gave him and his two fellow divers enough time to deliver the final blow.
“He got the second shot in and we started screaming,” said Sugimura’s friend, Bing Pellin. “We had to get all three of our spear guns in that thing before it got knocked. We all hit headshots but we couldn’t find the brain until the last shot, thankfully got it.”
Mysterious DARPA drone spotted off Waikiki
A boater thankfully helped the fisherman bring their haul to shore, experts said ulua this size are seldom seen.
“It’s always been rare to catch what’s basically called a 100-pounder. So any fish above 100 pounds. And that’s really the goal of a lot of the ulua fishermen is sometime in their life to be able to join that club,” said UH Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology associate research professor Erik Franklin. “Congratulations to that guy. That’s an amazing catch. That’s a that’s a lifelong dream right there.”
Sugimura — a third generation diver himself — and his buddies said it will be a fishing tale that they tell for years to come and this one is true.
“I’m trying to explain how beautiful this fish looked when it was swimming up to us. It would look like it had so much aura to it and it was just just swimming with such elegance,” Pellin said.
“I’m really happy about that and now I don’t need to look for one again,” Sugimura said, “I’m going to go and get it Gyotaku’d, which is like the old Japanese way of looking at fish before social media, I guess, and you just paint the fish and put it on top of rice paper.”
Check out more news from around Hawaii
The world and State record for the larges ulua officially weighed was 191 pounds — that beast was caught between Maui and Lanai in 1980.

Montezuma’s Revenge! The 40th Anniversary Edition review [SideQuesting]
Montezuma’s Revenge! The 40th Anniversary Edition review [SideQuesting]
WTMG’s Leo Faria: “I really tried to appreciate the fact another classic gaming franchise from the earlier days of the medium was finally making a comeback, cementing its legacy, but I had a ********** time playing Montezuma’s Revenge: The 40th Anniversary Edition. It’s buggy, confusing, and uninspired. It’s easy to forgive the clunkiness of the original, since it was released more than 40 years ago, but we expect quality of life enhancements from a fully-fledged remake. There are none. Everything we could have lived without from the original is featured, resulting in a game that tarnishes the reputation of this classic to a wider audience of players. If anything, I legit had more fun playing the ROM of the original game, included as a bonus, than the remake itself. Not that it was that much of a feat, of course…”

Six Nations: The school divide behind England’s rugby team
Six Nations: The school divide behind England’s rugby team
Perhaps most importantly, there is a huge cultural weight placed on rugby.
St Joseph’s first team are presented with their festival shirts at a special assembly before singing, some in tears, to the rest of the school.
“It really is as close as you can get to a professional experience or lifestyle, without actually being paid for it,” says Wenham.
The RFU has a network of rugby managers to try to embed the game in state schools.
Sixteen of the best compete in the ACE (Academy, Colleges and Education) League. England internationals George Martin, Joe Heyes and Harry Randall all rose up through that route.
But, those institutions are thinly spread and tight on resources.
Private schools, where fees can exceed £50,000 a year, will always have more to invest.
They are not entirely closed shops, however. You can attend, even if you can’t pay.
Because top rugby-playing private schools don’t just spend on facilities, they also invest in talent, offering highly sought-after scholarships and bursaries which can dramatically reduce fees.
So, while England captain Maro Itoje finished his education at Harrow, bumping up the team’s percentage of private-school attendees, he arrived there at 16 on a scholarship from St Georges, a state school in Hertfordshire.
Ollie Lawrence and Tom and Ben Curry similarly finished their education in the private sector, after being awarded scholarships.
St Joseph’s recent success story is Emmanuel Iyogun, who now plays for Northampton and has represented England A. He arrived on a scholarship from Woodlands School, a state school in Essex.
England international Anthony Watson and his former club and country team-mate Beno Obano, who went to Dulwich College on a scholarship at 16, valued such schemes so highly they set up their own, funding Harlan Hines’ switch from a state school in south-east London to Marlborough College in 2022.
A large proportion of England’s elite players may emerge out of private schools, but their talent wasn’t necessarily born in them.
There may be fewer scholarships on offer in the future though.
Since January, VAT has been payable on school fees.
The move, which the government predicts will raise billions for state schools, has put pressure on private school’s registers and balance sheets alike.
Various figures in the industry have predicted that scholarships may have to be squeezed.
As headmaster of Mount Kelly School, a private school in Devon, Guy Ayling is already making difficult decisions around awards for pupils.
“Bursaries and scholarships have a cost attached,” he says. “That is the bottom line. They are costs like food, utilities and teacher salaries, and it is therefore something we have to consider.
“It is the way of the world moving forward; there is potentially going to be less money in the system and when there is less money in the system, you don’t spend as much, including on helping families with financial assistance.”
Fewer scholarships would mean more kids in George Paul’s position.
The 23-year-old grew up in Peterborough. He played at Wisbech rugby club, but as he and his ambitions grew in the game, he wanted more rugby than his school would provide.
He had a scholarship offer at Wisbech Grammar, a nearby independent school, but with family finances and siblings to consider he didn’t take it up.
Instead, aged 15 and finding his club side weakened as other talented kids switched into the private school system, he chased competitive rugby through a different route.

David Di Pilla’s HMC Capital interested in taking over Healthscope hospitals
David Di Pilla’s HMC Capital interested in taking over Healthscope hospitals
The owner of 11 Healthscope hospitals says it has been approached by parties — including a consortium led by David Di Pilla’s asset manager HMC Capital — interested in taking over the facilities from US private equity giant Brookfield.
The HMC-managed real estate group HealthCo and its unlisted healthcare fund on Friday said it had been approached by “capable and qualified” parties to potentially tenant its hospitals leased to Healthscope.
“In the event that Healthscope were to breach its lease obligations, HCW would seek to replace Healthscope’s tenancies with other hospital operators,” it said.
“(HealthCo) understands that HMC is in discussions with a broad group of key stakeholders as part of the consortium. (HealthCo) will consider all proposals.”
The future of Healthscope — Australia’s second-biggest private hospital operator — hangs in the balance as it wrestles with a $1.6 billion debt. Healthscope was given until March to renegotiate with its lenders.
HMC Capital real estate managing director Sid Sharma said it was pleased with the inbound interest from potential tenants eager to ensure continuity of essential healthcare services to Australians.
“We recognise that the HCW unit price has continued to be impacted by speculation about Healthscope and have proactively prepared for a number of potential scenarios that could play out in the short term,” he said.
HealthCo’s share price has fallen to 98¢ from over $2 when it listed in September 2021.
It comes a day after Healthscope had tapped former Qantas international boss Tino La Spina to take the top job, replacing Greg Horan.

Vietnam to use ******** loans for $8.3 billion railway linking both countries
HANOI (Reuters) – Vietnam plans to take loans from the ******** government to partly fund a $8.3 billion project to build a new railway linking the two countries, the transport minister said on Thursday.
Vietnam has been seeking to upgrade its aging railway systems, and has approached China for funding and technology.
“Vietnam’s current railway system is outdated, and the country needs a new system to support its economic development,” transport minister Nguyen Hong Minh told parliament.

The 391 km (243 mile) railway will run from the border city of Lao Cai through capital city Hanoi to Haiphong that houses the largest seaport in northern Vietnam, Minh said.
The railway will have a gauge of 1,435 millimetres and will allow trains to operate at a speed of up to 160 kph (99 mph). It is designed to transport passengers and cargo.
Construction of the railway is expected to start this year and be completed by 2030, he said.
Parliament is scheduled to vote on the railway project next week during its ongoing meeting in Hanoi.
In November, lawmakers also approved a resolution supporting a $67 billion, 1,541 km (958-mile) high-speed rail that would link Hanoi with business hub Ho Chi Minh City, targeting the start of operations in 2035.

Premier League predictions: Chris Sutton v The Wombats drummer & Everton fan Dan Haggis
Premier League predictions: Chris Sutton v The Wombats drummer & Everton fan Dan Haggis
Trying to call this is a bit like a game I used to play with my kids, poker dice, where you roll five dice and it is completely random what you end up with.
This is the first time I have so little idea of what to expect from both sides that I actually think I need to make two predictions, rather than one.
I can guarantee you this, though. Whatever result I go for, it will end up being the opposite of what actually happens.
Tottenham demolished Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford in September but that does not really have any bearing here.
Spurs are getting players back from injury and Timo Werner, James Maddison and Guglielmo Vicario are among those training again, but how fit are they going to be for this game?
Ange Postecoglou says his players are out on their feet and we could see that in their FA Cup defeat at Aston Villa, so a lot depends on how much they have left in the tank.
As for Manchester United, well I’ve been reading reports this week that some of their players are unhappy with Ruben Amorim’s style of play.
There is lots going on off the pitch too, with stories that more redundancies are planned at the club, following controversy over a rise in ticket prices., external
Who would have thought when Ineos completed their deal to take a stake in United 12 months ago that, within a year, they could possibly be as unpopular with fans as co-owners the Glazers are.
In regards to Amorim, I just think he needs time. He arrived in mid-season, he has his way of playing and United will have to give him the players who fit that system, so it might take a window or two before we see him with the team he wants.
There needs to be patience there, but we also know football fans are impatient. They want to see some improvement in the short-term, and it is hard to argue they have made any progress since Amorim took charge.
I still have a sneaky feeling they might edge this game but I cannot really tell you what I am basing that on.
This is a big game for Ange too, now his side are out of both domestic cups, but I am going with United, just.
Sutton’s prediction: 1-2 or 4-0 [only 1-2 will count as Chris’s score]
Dan’s prediction: These two are both having a shocker – it looks like the league table is upside down when you see them down in 13th and 14th, and hopefully we will be above both of them by the time this game is played. They both need a win pretty badly, so I can see this being a draw. 2-2

Aussie men start Abu Dhabi wave pool event with a bang
Aussie men start Abu Dhabi wave pool event with a bang
Olympians Jack Robinson and Ethan Ewing have impressed early in the World Surf League’s wave pool competition in Abu Dhabi with dominant opening round victories.
West *********** Robinson, who is more widely known for his skill in heavy conditions, looked right at home in the first event ever held in the UAE.
Ewing, from Queensland, also impressed with a first-up score of 7.50 to set the tone for his heat win.
He backed that up by disappearing inside a deep barrel for a 6.23 ride.
Featuring the same wave technology of the company owned by surfing great Kelly Slater, Surf Abu Dhabi Pro has taken the tour stop of the American’s Californian wave pool event.
Robinson’s best score came with his first right-hand wave, competing against young Sydneysider George Pittar and Hawaiian Ian Gentil.
The 27-year-old finished his ride with an alley-oop, with his clean landing from the aerial move helping secure a score of 6.93.
In the competition format surfers ride two right-hand waves and two left-handers, with their heat total coming from their two top scores on each side.
Like Ewing, Robinson didn’t need to surf his final wave to secure the win while Pittar will head to the evening elimination round placing second.
The Paris Games silver medallist, who scored his first ever 10 in the event in Hawaii, said he felt comfortable in the pool.
“I’m just building but I feel like I’ve had a fair bit of practice in the pool as I’ve come over a couple of times,” Robinson told the WSL.
“Just getting the confidence, but I feel good here and it’s good to get it done because the conditions can change here, it gets a bit windy sometimes.”
There’s 11 Australians in action in the event, with the women, led by Pipe Pro winner Tyler Wright, to hit the water on Saturday.

Florida man is executed for the 1997 killing of a couple whose toddler witnessed the attack
Florida man is executed for the 1997 killing of a couple whose toddler witnessed the attack
STARKE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man convicted of killing a husband and wife at a remote farm in an attack witnessed by the couple’s toddler was put to death Thursday in the state’s first execution of the year.
James Dennis Ford, 64, was pronounced dead at 6:19 p.m. following a three-drug injection at Florida State Prison. He was convicted of the murders of Gregory Malnory, 25, and his wife Kimberly, 26. Both were killed during a 1997 fishing trip at a sod farm in southwest Florida’s Charlotte County where court records showed the two men worked.
Ford had nothing to say Thursday evening to about 25 witnesses present as he lay strapped on a gurney. But the Corrections Department said the inmate did write a message on paper that read: “Hugs Prayer Love!!! God bless everyone.”
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
At first, as the injection began, his chest began heaving and then, slowly, all movements ceased. A few minutes later a staffer shook him and yelled “Ford! Ford!” to see if he was still conscious. There was no response.
At the time of the killings, the couple’s 22-month-old daughter witnessed the attack. She was strapped in a seat in the family’s open pickup truck and survived an 18-hour ordeal before workers came upon the crime scene. They found the girl covered in her mother’s blood and suffering from numerous insect bites, according to investigators.
The victims’ daughter, Maranda Malnory, was not present for Thursday’s execution but issued a written statement describing the pain of losing her parents.
“Living my whole life without them left me with a void that I had no idea would hurt so bad,” she wrote. “While I know this will never bring me back to my mom and dad, I will never get a chance to meet them, it is giving me peace of mind.”
She recently told Fort Myers television station WBBH that she had no recollection of the killings and only remembers her parents through photos and the memories of others. “I told one of my grandmas the other day you grieve the people you knew,” she added. “But I grieve what could have been.”
Ford’s execution was the first in Florida in 2025. One person was put to death in 2024, down from six in 2023, when Gov. Ron DeSantis was campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination. During the previous three years, the governor didn’t sign off on any executions. He signed Ford’s death warrant in January.
Also Thursday evening, a man who murdered his strip club manager and another man, then later prompted a massive lockdown of the state prison system, was executed in Texas.
Court documents show Ford attacked Gregory Malnory after the group arrived to go fishing, shooting him in the head with a .22-caliber rifle, beating him with an axe-like blunt instrument and finally slitting his throat. Kimberly Malnory was beaten, ****** and then shot with the same rifle, authorities had said.
Ford initially told investigators that the Malnorys were alive when he left them to go hunting, suggesting someone else killed them. Prosecutors said in a court filing that there was “overwhelming proof that Ford was responsible for the murders and the *****.”
The rifle was found later in a ditch near where Ford’s truck had run out of gas and prosecutors presented DNA evidence at his trial connecting him to both slayings. The jury voted 11-1 to recommend the death penalty in the killings, to which the trial judge agreed.
The U.S. Supreme Court denied Ford’s final appeal Wednesday without comment.
Ford’s lawyers had filed numerous appeals since his sentencing, all unsuccessful. Recently the Florida Supreme Court rejected claims that his IQ of about 65 at the time of the murders put him in an intellectually disabled category with a mental age then of about 14 — therefore ineligible for execution, court documents show.
The court noted that only defendants whose chronological age was under 18 at the time of a crime can be ineligible for the death penalty “and because Ford was 36 at the time of the murders, it was “impossible for him to demonstrate that he falls within the ages of exemption.”
It’s not clear from court records why these killings happened. Part of Ford’s defense was that he suffered from abuse as a child and became an alcoholic like his father, drinking about a case of beer a day along with liquor. He also suffered from untreated diabetes, sometimes leading to blackouts and erratic behavior.
At trial, Ford also was convicted of ******* battery with a firearm and child abuse.
The Death Penalty Information Center said Florida uses a three-drug injection of a sedative, a paralytic and a drug that stops the heart to put inmates to death.

Haute couture fashion house Hermes on Friday reported a better-than-expected jump in fourth-quarter sales, proving still strong demand for the most exclusive products in an otherwise turbulent luxury market.
The maker of the Birkin handbag posted a 17.6% rise in revenues at constant exchange rates to 3.96 billion euros ($4.15 billion) in the three months to Dec. 31, outpacing the 3.69 billion euros forecast by LSEG analysts.
Full-year sales rose 14.7% at constant exchange rates to 15.2 billion euros versus an anticipated 14.94 billion euros.
“In 2024, in a more uncertain economic and geopolitical context, the solid performance of the results attests to the strength of the Hermès model and the agility of the house’s teams, whom I thank warmly,” Axel Dumas, executive chairman of Hermes, said.
Hermes has largely evaded a wider luxury sector downturn over recent years, maintaining a sense of allure and exclusivity where other brands have faced pushback amid higher costs and limited innovation.
