Mules that provided aid after Hurricane Helene struck down on road Mules that provided aid after Hurricane Helene struck down on road Among the idyllic landscapes of Mount Ulla, North Carolina, there is a sadness wafting through the community where two mules and a horse that carried supplies to victims of Hurricane Helene were hit and killed last weekend. The three animals, named Vader, Kev, and Amigo, were struck by a semitruck on a road. A tree fell on a fence, leaving an opening for the three faithful equines to escape their pasture, according to a post on the Mountain Mule Packer Ranch Facebook page. “We could not be more heartbroken over this incredible loss, and it is with great pain that we share it with you, as we know many of you have also fallen in love with these sweet animals,” the ranch said in the post. The packs of mules trekked through treacherous roadways and rocky mountain sides to deliver food, water and building supplies to those devastated by the hurricane. The mules helped deliver disaster relief from western North Carolina to eastern Tennessee, the ranch said on social media. The organization’s mission is to provide mule training and packing instruction for civilian and military groups. The animals are equipped to carry gear and resources for weapon groups, communication teams and medical teams in remote environments, according to the ranch. The hard work of these mules and their tireless efforts united the community after the tragedy of Hurricane Helene, Mountain Mule Packers’ co-founder Michele Toberer said. Since the devastating cyclone hit Appalachia in September, the mules have played an integral part in relief efforts, especially in areas inaccessible by vehicles, the animals’ owner said. Mules are helping deliver supplies to North Carolina residents devastated by Hurricane Helene, according to Mountain Mule Packer Ranch. – Mountain Mule Packer Ranch Hurricane Helene was a Category 4 storm that created a 500-mile path of destruction from Florida to North Carolina with catastrophic flooding, damaging winds and power outages. Helene is one of the costliest tropical cyclones to ever hit the United States, resulting in nearly $80 billion in damage. At least 106 people were killed as a result of the storm, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. In November, the ranch created a Christian non-profit disaster response organization known as Mission Mules to continue hurricane relief. The community was unified by their work in a beautiful way, Toberer explained. “They brought more than just supplies to people. It’s that they were bringing hope to people, because there were so many people that felt like they were forgotten,” Toberer said. “Just the fact that these mules were coming brought a smile to their face.” Despite this tragic loss, the disaster relief organization pushes forward with its mission. The team and its mules are hosting a distribution event in ****** Mountain, North Carolina for those continuing to be impacted by Helene’s aftermath. “The thought of leaving on Saturday without the other three is already heartbreaking for us, so we’re preparing ourselves for that,” Toberer said. “Their work ethic and what they’ve done with the people in western North Carolina taught us in the last few months that when something unimaginable happens, we still keep going.” For more CNN news and newsletters create an account at CNN.com Source link #Mules #aid #Hurricane #Helene #struck #road Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Civilization 7 Deliberately Cutting Major Leaders Is What Keeps the Game Fresh for Future Expansions Civilization 7 Deliberately Cutting Major Leaders Is What Keeps the Game Fresh for Future Expansions Firaxis Games’ Sid Meier’s Civilization VII was released earlier this week and it wasn’t long until veteran players realized that something was missing from the game. Since the inception of the Civilization franchise, Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi has been a part of every major game in the series, however, he is nowhere to be found in the latest installment. Fans have pointed out that some major leaders and civilizations are missing from Civilization 7 (Image via Firaxis Games) Not just Gandhi, but some major leaders and civilizations are missing from the game, but it seems like it was a deliberate move. The game’s lead designer has explained that Firaxis Games has created a long roadmap for the game, which will allow them to extend the game’s longevity. Firaxis Games will add more leaders and civilizations to Civilization 7 in the future The absence of Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi from Sid Meier’s Civilization VII raised a lot of questions as players realized that not only Gandhi but many prominent leaders and civilizations were missing from the game. The game’s lead designer, Ed Beach, recently appeared for an interview with IGN and confirmed that Firaxis Games plans to add more content in the future as DLCs. Beach further explained that there are many popular choices but not every leader or civilization could be included in the base game, so Firaxis had to cut some content out, So we always have to leave somebody out. There’re just too many popular choices and we always want to have a few fresh ones that sound really new and exciting to people. So things are getting left behind, but we always are looking at the big picture, when we’re going to bring leaders or civs into the fold. So there’s hope for Gandhi, yet. Civilization 7, which has the potential to be the best in the series, was met with some criticism, primarily because of its user interface. To solve this issue, Firaxis released Patch 1.0.1, which included improvements to the user interface and tooltips. The game didn’t have a solid start, but hopefully, the future updates will keep the players hooked. Firaxis Games has revealed the roadmap for Civilization 7 The roadmap for Civilization 7 confirms that two expansion packs will be released in 2025 (Image via Firaxis Games) In the Dev Diary #8, Firaxis Games revealed the roadmap for Civilization 7, confirming that the first phase of the Crossroads of the World Collection will roll out in early March, introducing a new leader and Carthage & Great Britain civilizations. The second phase of this expansion pack will be released in late March and will add another leader and Bulgaria & Nepal civilizations. The Crossroads of the World Collection is included in the Deluxe and Founders Editions of Civilization 7, but everyone who owns the base game can also purchase this expansion pack. Another expansion pack called Right to Rule will roll out between April and September 2025. Musk goes ‘offline’ after Maga influencer claims she gave birth to his 13th child Musk goes ‘offline’ after Maga influencer claims she gave birth to his 13th child Ashley St. Clair, a 26-year-old Right-wing writer, claims she and Musk share a five-month-old child – @Stclairashley/X Elon Musk has vowed to take a break from his social media site after a Maga influencer claimed to have given birth to his 13th child. Ashley St. Clair, a 26-year-old Right-wing writer, revealed on X that she and Musk share a five-month-old child, before reprimanding the world’s richest man for failing to respond. “Five months ago, I welcomed a new baby into the world. Elon Musk is the father,” she wrote. “I have not previously disclosed this to protect our child’s privacy and safety, but in recent days it has become clear that tabloid media intends to do so, regardless of the harm it will cause.” She later added: “Elon, we have been trying to communicate for the past several days and you have not responded.” Mr Musk, who has fathered 12 children across three relationships, did not confirm or deny the influencer’s claim but reacted to another user’s suggestion that Ms St. Clair’s pregnancy was pre-planned. “Ashley St. Clair plotted for half a decade to ensnare Elon Musk,” Milo Yiannopoulos, the British firebrand, wrote on X. The post was accompanied by a screenshot appearing to show Ms St. Clair telling Greg Price, a fellow media personality, on X that she needed to attract Mr Musk’s attention for a marriage proposal – years before the pair would meet. “Whoa,” Mr Musk responded, before saying he would be uncharacteristically “offline” for the weekend to work on his AI project Grok 3. Ashley St. Clair, a 26-year-old Right-wing writer, claims she and Musk share a five-month-old child – x.com/stclairashley Ms St. Clair, who previously worked for The Babylon Bee, a satirical website, and has written an anti-woke children’s book about gender identity, responded: “When are you going to reply to us instead of publicly responding to smears from an individual who just posted photos of me in underwear at 15 years old?” The Maga influencer added that Musk’s team had already been made aware of the social media posts which were “clearly in jest”. In an interview with The New York Post published on Saturday, Ms St. Clair claimed that the Tesla and SpaceX CEO had “slid into her DMs” on X in May 2023. Ms St. Clair claimed Mr Musk had messaged her: “Are you ever in San Francisco or Austin?” to which she responded: “I am in Austin a good amount for work.”‘ This reportedly led to an offer to interview Mr Musk at the Twitter HQ in San Francisco which was arranged by her company within two days. Not long after the interview, Ms St. Clair said she received another message from Mr Musk asking: “Feel like going to Providence [Rhode Island] tonight?” “I was told to keep it secret. I was being asked to keep it a secret forever,” she said referring to her pregnancy, alleging that she had agreed to leave the billionaire’s name off the birth certificate to preserve his privacy. Florida-born Ms St. Clair alleged that she was put up in a lavish apartment in New York’s financial district, while her friends were reportedly made to sign NDAs. “I was completely isolated during my pregnancy. Every part of my career and everything I used to do I couldn’t do anymore. I was told not to tell anybody,” she claimed. Brian Glicklich, the author’s representative, said the pair had been working “privately” on an agreement for raising their child. “We are waiting for Elon to publicly acknowledge his parental role with Ashley, to end unwarranted speculation, and Ashley trusts that Elon intends to finish their agreement quickly, in the best interests of the wellbeing and security of the child they share,” he wrote on X. Ashley St. Clair claimed Elon Musk had ‘slid into her DMs’ on X in May 2023 Mr Musk has not directly responded to the revelations, but has responded to a fan asking if making another baby was one of his “side quests” by posting a crying laughing emoji. The South African billionaire, who has admitted being “obsessed” with the plight of falling birth rates, has 12 other children spanning three relationships. He shares five children with Justine Wilson, his first wife, with whom he shares twins Vivian and Griffin and triplets Kai, Saxon and Damian. The pair lost their first-born child at just 10 weeks old to sudden infant death syndrome. In 2022, aged 18, Vivian changed her name from Xavier to Vivian, dropped her father’s name and sought gender transition. Ashley St. Clair asked Elon Musk when he would respond to her instead of ‘smears’ from someone who posted photos of ‘me in my underwear at 15 years old’ – @Stclairashley/X During an interview with Jordan Peterson, a ********* academic and anti-woke celebrity, in 2024, Mr Musk declared that his trans daughter was dead to him, and that he was “tricked” into giving consent for his child to take puberty blockers. “I lost my son, essentially. They call it deadnaming for a reason,” he said, adding: “My son Xavier is dead, killed by the woke mind virus.” His marriage to Ms Wilson, a ********* author, lasted from 2000 to 2008, with Mr Musk later claiming that he contributes $20,000 a month in child support. Mr Musk’s high-profile relationship with musician Grimes brought the birth of X Æ A-Xii, known as X – who has been seen accompanying his father around the White House – and his daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, and son Techno Mechanicus. Ashley St. Clair appeals to Elon Musk on social media about his parental role to her child while he parades in – Jim Watson/AFP Grimes, who has previously spoken about wanting privacy for her child, reacted with dismay as Mr Musk paraded the toddler at a press event in the Oval Office. “He should not be in public like this,” Grimes wrote on X in response to a user complimenting her for raising a “very polite” child. “I did not see this, thank you for alerting me. But I’m glad he was polite. Sigh,” she wrote. Mr Musk also shares twins, Strider and Azure, with Shivon Zilis, a Neuralink executive. The pair later welcomed a third child in early 2024. What is an operating system? Essential computing software explained What is an operating system? Essential computing software explained An operating system is the essential software that’s needed to run your computer’s suite of software. Everything from video games to web browsing, basic word processing, and more is down thanks to the OS, which provides a visual interface. Depending on the hardware of your computer, your operating system could commonly be Microsoft Windows, Apple’s macOS, Linux, or Google’s ChromeOS. While there are others, these are four most common types of operating systems available in today’s desktops and laptops. With that said, there are many alternative operating systems available in 2025. These encompass everything from ArcaOS, Haiku, FreeDOS, Visopsys, and more. Depending on your hardware build and use case, these varying software solutions could be a better fit; some are even free. What is an operating system? (Image credit: Frogella / Shutterstock) Put simply, an operating system is software that runs everything on your computer. It manages and controls all other software by interacting with the hardware, such as your processor, RAM, storage, and graphics card, allowing hardware and software to work together. This includes hardware functionality for your computer’s input and output devices, as well as memory allocation, as a form of code that can be read and followed by the hardware. Without an operating system, your computer cannot function. The first mainstream commercial operating system was Microsoft’s DOS, a text-based disk operating system for computers that ran until 1998 with PC DOS 2000. It was Apple’s Macintosh computers that commercialized (and popularized) a graphical user interface (GUI). Its primary goal was to be more user-friendly and less intimidating than the previous text-only command lines of Microsoft’s DOS OS. However, Microsoft would launch its own GUI operating system, Windows 1.0 in 1985, its first foray into a more visual operating system. Fast forward to 2025, where we have macOS 15 Sequoia and Windows 11, the latest iterations of those operating systems, which are still going strong. (Image credit: Apple) Types of operating system The largest operating system by market share is Microsoft Windows which accounts for roughly 72% of operating systems installed on computers. This is due to the fact that Windows comes pre-installed in millions of laptops and desktops across the world, which stretches across a multitude of different OEM manufacturers. Additionally, Windows 11 can be purchased for use in computers that you can build from scratch. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. In contrast, Apple’s macOS can only be found in its line of MacBook laptops and Mac desktop computers. It accounts for roughly 15% of the market share, owing to the popularity of its machines such as the MacBook Air M3, MacBook Pro M4, and the 24-inch iMac M4, among others. Apple also manufacturers its own Arm-based silicon instead of relying on outsourced components which gives its devices a distinct look and feel, something that also extends to the operating system. While Windows is a paid product and macOS is exclusive to Apple hardware, Linux is a completely free operating system designed for computers. As an open-source OS, it’s available not only for computers, but also phones, handhelds, TVs, cars, and more. Based on the Linux kernel, it can be configured and tailored for a myriad of different purposes, but usually requires some prior knowledge to get running properly. In recent years, it has risen to prominence due to it powering SteamOS, which is found on the Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED (for around 2% market share). Google’s ChromeOS is a cloud-based operating system that’s designed to be as lightweight as possible. While you can install ChromeOS on PC, Mac, and Linux devices as well, its primary use is on lower-powered laptops (called Chromebooks) that are built around web use. This software is praised for its ease of use, tight security, speed, and Android integration through the Google Play Store. It is not as versatile as Windows, Linux, or macOS, but works effectively in providing the essential computing processes such as web browsing and word processing. With that said, there are also different types of operating system depending on the use case, including Batch Operating Systems, Time-sharing Operating Systems, Distributed Operating Systems, Network Operating Systems, Multiprocessing Operating Systems, Single-User Operating Systems, Multi-User Operating Systems, and Cluster Operating Systems. What do operating systems do? (Image credit: Sergey Kisselev / Behance.net / Microsoft) There are many different primary functions of an operating system including the management of resources, devices, processes, files, and memory. However, your OS is also key to securing your computer as well as the handling of networking and error detection. It’s the encompassing solution for you to use your hardware in as convenient and visual a means as possible. Operating systems also control hardware components, such as your CPU, GPU, RAM, and SSD, among others. Input and output devices are also handled by the operating system, through installed drivers, like your mouse, keyboard, monitor, printer, speakers, and more. Downsides of operating systems (Image credit: Besjunior / Shutterstock) A major downside of operating systems is the compatibility issues that can arise with new hardware and software, in some cases meaning that your devices may not function as desired. This could mean not having the full suite of features available from a new keyboard, mouse, webcam, or other device. Additionally, operating systems are vulnerable to computer viruses and malware attacks which can corrupt your entire machine. Fortunately, you can stay safe by utilizing one of the best VPNs and the best antivirus software. If your rig is compromised, it can potentially mean losing all your data and files in a system-wide wipe. Some operating systems, like Windows 11, update frequently and can introduce problems that spoil the user experience. There are situations where security updates can be halted as patches are rolled out. We have seen this with Windows 11 24H2 (and previous iterations). It’s a similar story with iterations of macOS, as software features are routinely added and subtracted. Operating systems may also need to update frequently, which can disrupt your workflow or gaming experience. While you can delay these usually, they must still happen or glaring security flaws may be present and could be exploited in your machine. Most updates can be handled in the background, but others may need to disrupt your experience, or force restarts. It’s important to stay on top of updates, but that doesn’t make them any less frustrating. NRG VALORANT Benches Verno and Coach Bonkar NRG VALORANT Benches Verno and Coach Bonkar After 12 official matches as a team and only three during VCT Americas, NRG has benched Andrew “Verno” Maust and VALORANT coach Malkolm “bonkar” Rench. Following a strong performance at offseason events that resulted in high expectations, NRG has already made significant changes. Verno and Bonkar Out From NRG After Only a Dozen Official Matches Roster changes to the NRG VALORANT roster had been rumored since the conclusion of kickoff, but were confirmed by the organization today. NRG’s Chief Gaming Officer Jaime Cohenca says the benching is a result of a lack of cohesion that has been brewing for months. “What I can say is that we put together a roster that was poised to contend for international championships but ultimately failed in terms of team cohesion,” Cohenca wrote on X. “Winning SEN City and SOOP [in the offseason] only delayed the effects of the issues brewing. The team no longer could function as constructed, so continuing with the current five players/head coach was not an option. Given the nature of the VCT schedule, this break is pretty much the only window to make a roster move, so we are doing things now to be ready for when a Champs slot is on the line.” VCT Roster Update: Verno and Bonkar have been moved to the NRG VALORANT reserve roster. They will remain a part of NRG as we prepare for the remainder of the 2025 VCT season. Long-time veterans of NRG in Sam “s0m” Oh, Pujan “FNS” Mehta, and Ethan “Ethan” Arnold will seemingly stay on the starting roster. Adam “mada” Pampuch, who joined the teamduring this past offseason, will also stay following an exceptional statistical performance at Kickoff. Some fans speculate that former coach Chetan “Chet” Singh could return when his suspension expires at the end of Masters Bangkok. Chet was suspended by Riot Games for streaming VODs deemed “confidential” on his personal channel. NRG lost to Cloud9 and KRÜ at Kickoff, while managing to win against 100T in between those matches, but earned no points towards Champions qualification. First-half strikes from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah secured the win for Liverpool and ensured they maintained their advantage over second-placed Arsenal. Liverpool failed to register a single shot on target after the break as Wolves dominated the chances. Diaz bundled the ball over the line from close range in the 15th minute to give the home team the lead, before Salah doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 37th after Diaz was brought down. It was the Egypt international’s 28th goal of an outstanding season. But if the home crowd was expecting a routine victory against Wolves, it was anything but. Cunha’s drag-back and curled finish from around 20 metres in the 67th minute came after a sustained ******* of pressure from the visitors. Before that, Marshall Munetsi was denied when through on goal — it took a crucial block in front of goal from Jarell Quansah to prevent him from converting late on. Tottenham were hosting fellow strugglers Manchester United later on Sunday. Source link #Salah #sinks #Wolves #send #Liverpool #points #clear Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Iowa barbers, it’s time to take back our industry from burdensome licensing Iowa barbers, it’s time to take back our industry from burdensome licensing Iowa’s barbering laws have failed Iowa’s barbers. For nearly a century, our profession has been held back by some of the most disproportionately burdensome requirements of any comparable licensed occupation, not only in Iowa, but throughout the entire country. Now, our lawmakers have the chance to take an important step towards freeing barbers from decades of needless and costly red tape by passing Senate File 41 and House File 49. Right now, barbers are required to get 1,500 hours of training in a traditional barber school program. Imagine spending months sitting in a classroom, paying thousands of dollars, instead of learning hands-on from an experienced barber while earning a paycheck. That’s the broken system we have today. These hours cost a lot of money in tuition, and a lot of money in forgone wages; and in our rural state, it can be hard to find a school — putting licensure completely out of reach for otherwise enthusiastic aspiring barbers. More: What do Iowa’s costly licensing requirements, including 2,100 hours to cut hair, achieve? ‘You’re just racking up a bill’ This legislative proposal is simple. It allows aspiring barbers to forgo old-school, expensive training in a classroom and instead, get trained and earn money under licensed barbers like us. We take on the responsibility for ensuring they practice safely, and they gain experience in our industry without having to jump through the burdensome hoops of traditional licensure — the same way millions of other people learn to do their jobs. Let’s be honest: Nobody comes out of school with all of the skills necessary to become a truly successful barber; and state bureaucracies are simply incapable of evaluating and regulating a barber’s talent. We, the barbers, are the ones who should be responsible for the future of our industry. We know how to run successful businesses, build trust with our clients, and survive in a highly competitive and dynamic environment — and most importantly, maintain a strong reputation based on safety, sanitation, skill and respect for our services and industry. More: Iowa barbers and cosmetologists need relief from regulatory maze Nobody is more capable of training the next generation of barbers than we are. Nobody is more qualified to pass on our craft. Nobody is more invested in the future of this industry than we the barbers. Senate File 41 and House File 49 are the first step in allowing us to reclaim our profession from the grip of traditional government requirements, which have forced many to work illegally or to forgo a career in barbering altogether. If allowed, we would welcome these barbers to work in our shops under our supervision and mentorship. We would grow Iowa’s barber industry and make it a national leader. Craig Hunt Iowa’s barbers are ready to lead a new era of opportunity. Around a decade ago, there were few independent barbershops still around in the Des Moines area. But shops like ours can be a source of growth across Iowa, bringing life back to main streets and creating places of community and belonging. Let’s stop holding back the next generation and open the doors to a thriving, independent industry. These bills give us the tools to create more opportunities for aspiring barbers to gain supervised experience and training from experts in our field, opening the door to a fulfilling and accessible career. It’s time to give barbers the freedom to build their futures — one cut at a time. Jerrae Lindsey Craig Hunt and Jerrae Lindsey are founding members of the Iowa Barbers Coalition, a group dedicated to advocating for a less burdensome regulation of the barbering profession. Craig is the owner of Universal Barbershop in Des Moines. Jerrae owns Uncle Jay’s Barbering Company in Iowa Falls and Urbandale. Bukavu in DR Congo falls to Rwandan-backed M23 rebels Bukavu in DR Congo falls to Rwandan-backed M23 rebels Rwandan-backed M23 rebels have entered Bukavu, the second-largest city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, seizing the regional governor’s office. Some people lined the streets to clap and cheer the fighters as they marched and drove into the city centre without resistance. It is the second city after Goma to fall to the rebels in the mineral-rich region in the past few weeks. The Congolese government has acknowledged its fall and urged residents to stay at home “to avoid being targeted by the occupying forces”. The UN and European countries have warned that the latest offensive, which has seen hundreds of thousands of people forced from their homes, could spark a wider regional war. A resident in Bukavu, who asked to remain anonymous because of concerns for her safety, told the BBC on Sunday that most people were still afraid to leave their homes. “Since yesterday the children and the youth took the weapons. They are shooting everywhere in all directions, they are looting,” she said. “This morning the M23 entered and they were acclaimed by the people, very happy to see them. We don’t know if it’s because they are afraid or because they found that there were no authorities in the city. “The place where I live the crackling [gunfire] can still be heard.” On Friday, the M23 captured Bukavu’s main airport, which is about 30km (18 miles) north of the city – and then began advancing slowly towards the city, which is the capital of South-Kivu province. The provincial governor, Jean-Jacques Purusi Sadiki, confirmed to the Reuters news agency the fighters were in Bukavu city centre by Sunday morning, adding that Congolese troops had withdrawn to avoid urban fighting. This left a security vacuum in the city on Saturday with chaotic scenes playing out, including a reported prison break from the central prison. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) said a warehouse with nearly 7,000 tonnes of food was looted. The city of around two million people on the southern tip of Lake Kivu borders Rwanda and is an important transit point for the local mineral trade. Its fall represents an unprecedented expansion of territory for the M23 since their latest insurgency started in late 2021 – and is a blow to the government of President Félix Tshisekedi. Government spokesman Patrick Muyaya said Rwanda was violating DR Congo’s territorial integrity through expansionist ambitions and human rights abuses. The Congolese government accuses Rwanda of sowing chaos in the region – as well as having troops on the ground – so it can benefit from its natural resources, something Kigali denies. President Tshisekedi wants his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame to face sanctions over the latest unrest. But President Kagame has dismissed such threats – and has repeatedly pointed out that Rwanda’s main priority is its security. He has long been angered by what he sees as the failure of the Congolese authorities to deal with the DR Congo-based FLDR rebel group, which he sees as a danger to Rwanda. The group is made up of some members of the ethnic Hutu militia accused of involvement in the 1994 genocide in Rwanda when over 100 days around 800,000 people, mainly from the Tutsi ethnic group, were killed. Troops from the Tusti-led M23 gathered at the Place de l’Indépendance in central Bukavu on Sunday, where one of its commanders, Bernard Byamungu, was filmed chatting to locals and answering their questions in Swahili. He urged government forces “hiding in houses” to surrender – and accused the withdrawing military of spreading terror by arming local youths who had gone on a looting rampage. The African Union (AU) – which has been holding a heads of state summit in Ethiopia this weekend – again urged the M23 to disarm. “We are all very, very concerned about an open regional war,” Reuters quotes the AU’s peace and security commissioner Bankole Adeo as saying. Starmer tells hunger-striking mum he will press Egypt Starmer tells hunger-striking mum he will press Egypt A mother who has been on hunger strike for 140 days has received a promise from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer that he will press the Egyptian government to release her son. In a statement Sunday, Starmer confirmed that he met Laila Soueif and said he will do “all that I can” to secure the release of Alaa Abd el-Fattah, a British-Egyptian dual national who has spent more than five years in an Egyptian prison. He is accused of “spreading false news” on social media. “We will continue to raise his case at the highest levels of the Egyptian government and press for his release,” Starmer said. A representative of the family said the meeting took place on Friday morning inside the prime minister’s offices at 10 Downing Street and that it was the first time the pair had met. Soueif, 68, has been on hunger strike since September 29, the day her son was supposed to be released, consuming nothing but herbal tea, ****** coffee and rehydration salts. After more than four months, Soueif has lost around 25 kilograms. She took her campaign directly to the Foreign Office in December, camping out in front of it every weekday to make sure officials notice her. When that yielded no results, she switched in mid-January to the gates of Starmer’s office — the famous ****** door of 10 Downing Street. “The great majority of mothers are prepared to die for their children; it just takes different forms,” she said. “Most mothers, if their children are in actual danger, you’re prepared to die.” *********** journalist Peter Greste, who was once jailed for 400 days in Egypt, joined Abd el-Fattah’s mother on a hunger strike for 21 days. One of Egypt’s most prominent pro-democracy activists, the 43-year-old Abd el-Fattah has spent most of the past 14 years behind bars since taking part in the 2011 uprising that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak. His most recent crime was “liking” a Facebook post describing torture in Egyptian prisons. Abd el-Fattah has been in custody since September 2019, and was sentenced to five years in prison after a trial before an emergency security court. But when his release date came up last September, Egyptian authorities refused to count the more than two years he had spent in pre-trial detention and ordered him to remain in custody until January 3, 2027. Thousands of critics of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi have been locked up under dire conditions after unjust trials, human rights groups say.
