  1. Starmer ‘ready’ to put *** troops on ground in Ukraine to protect peace Starmer ‘ready’ to put *** troops on ground in Ukraine to protect peace Sir Keir Starmer has said he is “ready and willing” to put *** troops on the ground in Ukraine as part of a possible peace process. Writing in the Daily Telegraph, the *** prime minister said securing a lasting peace in Ukraine “is essential if we are to deter Putin from further aggression in the future”. Ahead of an emergency summit with European leaders in Paris on Monday, Sir Keir said the *** was prepared to contribute to security guarantees to Ukraine by “putting our own troops on the ground if necessary”. “I do not say that lightly,” he wrote. “I feel very deeply the responsibility that comes with potentially putting British servicemen and women in harm’s way.” The PM added: “But any role in helping to guarantee Ukraine’s security is helping to guarantee the security of our continent, and the security of this country.” The end of Russia’s war with Ukraine “when it comes, cannot merely become a temporary pause before Putin attacks again”, he added. Sir Keir is meeting European leaders in response to concerns the US is moving ahead with Russia on peace talks that will lock out the continent. The prime minister’s announcement comes after the former head of the Army, Lord Dannatt, told the BBC the *** military is “so run down” it could not lead any future peacekeeping mission in Ukraine. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio plans to meet Russian officials in Saudi Arabia in the coming days for talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, US officials say. On Saturday, US special envoy to Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, said European leaders would be consulted only and not take part in any talks between the US and Russia. A senior Ukrainian government source told the BBC on Sunday that Kyiv has not been invited to talks between the US and Russia aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. 2. Juventus halt Inter’s return to Serie A summit Juventus halt Inter’s return to Serie A summit Defending champions Inter Milan have missed the chance to move top of Serie A after losing 1-0 at Juventus, who boosted their hopes of a top-four finish. Francisco Conceicao scored the only goal in the 74th minute of a high-tempo Derby d’Italia on Sunday night. Inter remain two points behind league leaders Napoli, who were held to a 2-2 draw at Lazio on Saturday. Juventus are fourth. Inter had the better of the chances in the first half, with Lautaro Martinez uncharacteristically blazing over the bar from close range when completely unmarked. However, visiting goalkeeper Yann Sommer had to make the most important saves. Nerazzurri defender Denzel Dumfries also hit the post twice. But it was Juventus who broke the deadlock with a fantastic assist from new signing Randal Kolo Muani. The France forward, who had scored five goals in three league matches for Juve, gathered the ball on the edge of the area and made his way through a crowd of players before tripping. The ball came to Conceicao, who drove it into the bottom left corner. Juventus almost doubled their lead two minutes later but Dumfries did brilliantly to clear Teun Koopmeiners’ effort off the line. The match had also been dubbed “the Thuram derby” with Marcus Thuram playing for Inter and younger brother Khephren for Juventus. Their dad, Lilian — who starred as a defender for Juve and won the World Cup with France in 1998 — was watching from the stands. In Tuscany, teenager Assane Diao scored again to set relegation-threatened Como on their way to a 2-0 win against Fiorentina. It was Diao’s fourth goal in his seven matches since joining from Real Betis last month and the win lifted Cesc Fabregas’ team five points above the drop zone. Nico Paz doubled Como’s lead in the 66th with a shot that took a slight deflection to curl in off the left post. Fiorentina are four points below Juventus in sixth. Elsewhere, ninth-placed Roma were without injured star forward Paulo Dybala but managed to win 1-0 at Parma. Empoli occupy 17th, one point and one place place above Parma, despite losing 3-0 at Udinese for an eighth defeat in 10 matches. Alessandro Nesta returned as coach of bottom club Monza last week — two months after he was fired — and managed to end his team’s four-match losing streak with a 0-0 draw against Lecce. 3. Long Island ex-jail guard shoots woman, dies by suicide in standoff with cops Long Island ex-jail guard shoots woman, dies by suicide in standoff with cops A former Suffolk County corrections officer shot and wounded a woman, barricaded himself inside his home and died by suicide Saturday, authorities said. Gerard Senatore, 66, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound around 3:30 p.m. when officers stormed the residence in Ridge, Newsday reported. Officers had first responded to the home around 1 p.m. following reports of a shooting, according to News 12 Long Island. A 68-year-old woman who had been shot twice was airlifted to a local hospital with serious injuries. While police did not identify the woman, neighbors and witnesses told News 12 she was Senatore’s wife. The house is about 55 miles east of Manhattan’s Central Park. After officers arrived at the scene, they formed a perimeter around the house, but Senatore refused to exit, Newsday reported. They blared a recorded message asking him to peacefully leave, but there was no movement. Following hours of waiting, an armored vehicle was used to breach the home’s front door, and cops found Senatore dead inside the residence. “It’s scary, I mean this is such a quiet neighborhood, everyone’s so friendly, and it’s shocking,” resident Jaime Ruiz told News 12. Portions of the neighborhood were blocked off for four hours. Senatore was on the Suffolk County payroll until at least 2014 as a correction officer with the sheriff’s department, according to Newsday. 6. CS2 Hits All-Time Player Peak on Steam Again CS2 Hits All-Time Player Peak on Steam Again Counter-Strike 2 has reached a new milestone today, setting a new standard for total players while still chasing the the all-time record for the series. The latest iteration of the Counter-Strike franchise reached its highest player peak ever. Is CS2 perfect? No, but it couldn’t be further from “dead.” CS2 Strengthens Its Hold As The Most Popular Game on Steam On February 16, 2025, Counter-Strike 2 reached a concurrent player peak of 1,744,015 players, according to the trusted SteamDB database. This occurred around 13:50 UTC: mid-to-late afternoon in Europe, night-time around Asia, and morning for the Americas. This 1.744 million player peak represents the most amount of players playing CS2 at once since just a couple months ago in December 2024. Since December, CS2 has averaged over 900,000 players, according to SteamDB. As impressive as the peaks and averages have been recently, they’re still just a bit short of the all-time records set by CS:GO. May 2023 saw the highest player peak ever in Counter-Strike history at 1,818,773 players, as well as the highest average ever at over 1.11 million players. Those historic numbers can be attributed to the announcement of the CS2 limited test and the start of the final CS:GO Major, BLAST Paris. The slight dip in CS2 player peaks and averages in January 2025 could be attributed to the break in the professional circuit following the Perfect World Shanghai Major. As the schedule has resumes with events like BLAST and IEM Katowice at the start of February, the player count swells once again. CS2 effectively owns the top spot on Steam’s player charts, as it has only been surpassed in active players in exceptionally rare circumstances. While the game’s popularity and player base show zero signs of trailing off, there are still concerns that players want addressed. These range from the still-rampant cheating issue to problems with FPS performance to a lack of content such as operations or new modes. Still, outside of maybe League of Legends, it remains the most popular PC game in the world. Will CS2 eventually beat the CS:GO player peak? 8. At least 8 people dead in Kentucky flooding as winter weather batters nation At least 8 people dead in Kentucky flooding as winter weather batters nation Feb. 16 (UPI) — Much of the country is bracing for yet another round of fierce winter weather with the latest front poised to belt the central and northeastern United States with snow, ice and dangerous winds. In Kentucky, at least eight people are dead and another 1,000 have been rescued from ravaging water as a result of severe flooding and vicious winter weather. “Kentucky, we are seeing dangerous and life-threatening conditions across the state, and things are only going to get tougher due to widespread flooding and incoming weather,” Beshear said at a news conference. “Please stay off the roads. If you see water over the roadway, turn around – it’s not worth it.” He said the fatalities include two men of motor vehicles crashes and six from floodwaters, including a child. “We believe the number [of deaths[ is going to grow,” Gov. Andy Beshear said, according to USA today. “Stay off the roads right now and stay alive.” Pedestrians cross 7th Avenue walking in Times Square as light snow falls on Saturday in New York City. Photo by John Angelillo/UPI Beshear said the White House had approved his request for emergency assistance. “From mudslides in the east to snow in the west, the situation is dangerous,” Beshear said. He said swift water teams statewide are rescuing people, including 19 in eastern Kentucky. More than 2,000 state highwater crew members from all 120 counties have responded this weekend. Louisville was lashed with as much as 6 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service, and more is on the way. Around 400,000 customers are without power in the Southeast, according to Poweroutage.us, including more than 22,000 in Kentucky. Strong winds and heavy rain have pummeled Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. Much of the region remained under a flash flood warning on Sunday. Police have reported flooding in Richmond, Va., and residents of a nursing home in Tennessee have been threatened by rising waters. At least 20 states east of the Rockies could see snow before the beginning of the workweek, according to Accuweather, and nearly 100 million people from New York to Florida are under dangerous wind warnings, which can threaten life or property. Storms have been tracking across the country for a week, bringing wave after wave of severe winter weather and record cold low temperatures. Highs won’t get out of the teens in Chicago, where the wind chill index could plunge to -9, and a number of cities along the eastern seaboard will also experience near record cold. Forecasters say there is yet another round of severe winter weather on tap for next week. 11. Trump administration wants the Supreme Court to let the firing of whistleblower agency head proceed Trump administration wants the Supreme Court to let the firing of whistleblower agency head proceed WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration wants the Supreme Court to permit the firing of the head of the federal agency dedicated to protecting whistleblowers, according to documents obtained Sunday that would mark the first appeal to the justices since President Donald Trump took office. The emergency appeal is the start of what probably will be a steady stream from lawyers for the Republican president and his administration seeking to undo lower court rulings that have slowed his second term agenda. The Justice Department’s filing obtained by The Associated Press asks the conservative-majority court to lift a judge’s court order temporarily reinstating Hampton Dellinger as the leader of the Office of Special Counsel. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. Dellinger has argued that the law says he can only be dismissed for problems with the performance of his job, none of which were cited in the email dismissing him. The petition came hours after a divided appeals court panel refused on procedural grounds to lift the order, which was filed Wednesday and expires on Feb. 26. The case is not expected to be docketed until after the Supreme Court returns from the Presidents Day holiday weekend. The justices would not act until Tuesday at the earliest. It’s not clear what reception Trump will get from the conservative-dominated court that includes three justices he nominated in his first term. The case began last week when Dellinger sued over his removal as head of the Office of Special Counsel, which is responsible for guarding the federal workforce from ******** personnel actions, such as retaliation for whistleblowing. He was appointed by Democratic President Joe Biden and confirmed by the Senate to a five-year term in 2024. Dellinger said the office’s work “needed now more than ever,” noting the “unprecedented” number of firings, without cause, of federal employees with civil service protections in recent weeks by the Trump administration. The administration argues that the order reinstating Dellinger for two weeks wrongly restricts what the president can do. The brief cites the Supreme Court decision that gave Trump immunity from criminal prosecution and reflected a muscular view of executive power. “Until now, as far as we are aware, no court in American history has wielded an injunction to force the president to retain an agency head,” acting Solicitor General Sarah M. Harris wrote. The brief references some of the dozen or more cases where judges have slowed Trump’s agenda, including by ordering the temporary lifting of a foreign aid funding freeze and blocking workers with Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency team from accessing Treasury Department data for now. The executive branch has argued since the Carter administration that the Office of Special Counsel is the kind of job where the president should have the power to hire and fire, and letting the order in Dellinger’s case stand could “embolden” judges to issue additional blocks in the roughly 70 lawsuits the Trump administration is facing so far, the Justice Department argues. Dellinger’s firing was the latest move in Trump’s sweeping effort to shrink and reshape the federal government, testing the limits of well-established civil service protections by moving to dismantle federal agencies and push out staffers. The independent Office of Special Counsel is separate from Justice Department special counsels such as Jack Smith, who are appointed by the attorney general for specific investigations, such as Smith’s criminal investigation of Trump before he returned to the White House. 17. Is ON Semiconductor Corporation (ON) the Most Oversold S&P 500 Stock in 2024? Is ON Semiconductor Corporation (ON) the Most Oversold S&P 500 Stock in 2024? We recently published a list of 10 Most Oversold S&P 500 Stocks in 2024. In this article, we are going to take a look at where ON Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:ON) stands against other most oversold S&P 500 stocks in 2024. Strong economic growth and the prospect of declining interest rates continue to support gains in global equities. That being said, elevated valuations over the past 2 years, mainly in the US, have put global stocks in a vulnerable position, opines Goldman Sachs Research. By the close of last year, the S&P 500 saw one of its strongest 2-year periods of returns since the year 1928. Much of this increase demonstrates better fundamental growth than investors had expected, with higher valuations acting as a significant contributor. As per Morgan Stanley, while several investors continue to favour recently successful approaches, like passive exposure to the broader S&P 500 Index, a more diversified investment strategy might provide better risk-adjusted returns. The benchmark US equity index remains richly priced and excessively concentrated. The 10 biggest stocks in the S&P 500 index make up for ~40% of its total market capitalization, making it excessively dependent on certain mega-cap tech companies continuing to exceed ambitious performance forecasts. =With the S&P 500 anticipated to post a marginal 7% return in 2025, other regions, sectors, and asset classes might become more attractive, says Morgan Stanley. Generally, the stocks and bonds have an inverse relation, offering a natural hedge in diversified portfolios. However, the current trends have demonstrated that such assets are moving in tandem, with both witnessing losses simultaneously, as was seen in 2022. Morgan Stanley believes that the higher bond yields and lower bond prices have been coinciding with lower stock prices. This trend highlights the importance of diversifying beyond traditional asset classes to mitigate risks. READ ALSO: 7 Best Stocks to Buy For Long-Term and 8 Cheap Jim Cramer Stocks to Invest In. While there are expectations of equity markets making further progress over the year as a whole — largely fueled by earnings — they have become vulnerable to a correction either due to higher bond yields and/or disappointments on growth in economic data or earnings, says Goldman Sachs. A fall in interest rates has been related to robust equity returns. In the US, the US Fed’s rate-cutting cycles have often coincided with higher stock prices as long as the broader economy avoids recession. Story Continues Amidst a favorable backdrop, Goldman believes that 3 main factors complicate the outlook for the stock rally. First, the pace of recent gains reflects much of the optimism the analysts expect regarding economic growth. Second, elevated valuations might limit the forward returns. Finally, the third factor is the unusually high market concentration. As per Peter Oppenheimer, chief global equity strategist and head of Macro Research in Europe, equities tend to be more vulnerable to growth disappointments due to increased concentration of equity market returns. Therefore, investors are required to focus on companies trading at reasonable valuations, and that have strong fundamentals. The company’s stock has been subject to softness in demand trends and inventory adjustments by the customers. During H1 2024, the dependency of revenue on automotive products, and lower industrial revenue (because of lower industrial activity and inventory buildup) further contributed to the decline in stock price. However, ON Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:ON) remains focused on maintaining its financial discipline, streamlining its operations, and continuing to deliver high-value, differentiated intelligent power and sensing solutions. The company has announced that it has completed its acquisition of the Silicon Carbide Junction Field-Effect Transistor (SiC JFET) technology business, including the United Silicon Carbide subsidiary, from Qorvo for $115 million. The addition of SiC JFET technology is expected to complement ON Semiconductor Corporation (NASDAQ:ON)’s extensive EliteSiC power portfolio and enable it to address the need for high energy efficiency and power density in the AC-DC stage in power supply units for AI data centers. Overall, ON ranks 6th on our list of most oversold S&P 500 stocks in 2024. While we acknowledge the potential of ON as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some deeply undervalued AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns, and doing so within a shorter time frame. 23. Conclave and The Brutalist win top prizes at Bafta film awards Conclave and The Brutalist win top prizes at Bafta film awards Emma Saunders Culture reporter Reuters Adrien Brody won best actor for his leading role in The Brutalist Pope drama Conclave and immigration epic The Brutalist walked away with some of the biggest prizes at the Bafta film awards on Sunday. Conclave, directed by ******* director Edward Berger, picked up four awards in total including best film and best British film; the first time a movie has won both in the same year since the 2019 war drama, 1917. It also won best adapted screenplay and best editing. US filmmaker Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist also won four – Corbet picked up best director while Adrien Brody won best actor for his portrayal of Hungarian architect and Holocaust survivor, László Tóth. The film also won best original score and cinematography. Other winners included Mikey Madison (best actress, for Anora), Kieran Culkin (best supporting actor, for A Real Pain) and Zoe Saldaña (best supporting actress, for Emilia Pérez). EPA Zoe Saldaña looked thrilled as she showed off her Bafta for supporting actress Berger, said on winning the British film prize: “This is a huge, huge honour. Best British and I’m not even from here, so I feel so welcome in your midst.” Bafta rules state that films in this category “must have significant creative involvement by individuals who are British”. Berger added that we live in a time of a crisis of democracy and ended his speech by quoting Leonard Cohen, saying: “There’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.” Brody told the audience The Brutalist “is really about the pursuit of leaving something meaningful”, while Corbet said he was “humbled and very grateful”. The ceremony was hosted by David Tennant at London’s Royal Festival Hall. The actor wore a kilt and opened the ceremony by belting out The Proclaimers’ classic song, I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles), joined by other stars including James McAvoy and Colman Domingo. In what has been an unpredictable awards season, the Baftas followed a similar pattern, with no single film sweeping the board, and several movies sharing the spoils. Conclave, about a a gossipy and scheming group of cardinals who gather in Rome to elect a new Pope, which stars Ralph Fiennes, had led the charge with 12 nominations. Reuters Bafta winner Mikey Madison is also nominated for best actress at the Oscars Emilia Pérez, the French-made film, about a dangerous ******** drug lord who decides to leave the world of crime and live a new life as a woman, has been the subject of controversy in recent weeks. Offensive social media posts by its star, Karla Sofía Gascón, were unearthed. Some wondered if the saga would affect its chances. With 11 nominations, it ended up winning best international film alongside Zoe Saldaña’s win. She is now a favourite to replicate her Bafta win at next month’s Oscars. On accepting the international film prize, the film’s director, Jacques Audiard, thanked the cast, including Gascon, as did Saldaña. Anora, about a New York stripper who has a whirlwind romance with the son of a Russian oligarch, had been picking up best picture momentum ahead of the Oscars next month – but instead came away with best actress and best casting. Kieran Culkin’s win for a A Real Pain was widely expected. The award was collected by his co-star and the film’s writer and director, Jesse Eisenberg. Eisenberg’s film, about two cousins who explore their Jewish grandmother’s roots in Poland, also picked up the award for best original screenplay. Actor and TV presenter Warwick Davis was awarded the Bafta Fellowship, the highest honour bestowed by the British Academy. He thanked his mother – his “first agent” and his “wonderful wife Sammy who died almost a year ago”. The In Memoriam segment, which honours those from the film community who we have lost in the past year, paid tribute to the likes of Dame Maggie Smith, James Earl Jones, David ******, Dame Joan Plowright and Donald Sutherland. PA Media Camila Cabello, who was presenting an award, had fun with the Wallace and Gromit models backstage Other winners included Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Part 2, which won special effects and sound. Blockbuster musical film Wicked won best production design for Brits Nathan Crowley and Lee Sandales. It was Crowley’s first Bafta and his sixth nonmination, although Sandales has won twice previously. It also picked up best costume design. Aardman’s latest Wallace and Gromit film, Vengeance Most Fowl, won best animation – perhaps surprisingly, it’s the first time they have won this award. They also picked up the inaugural award for best children and family film. West Belfast rap group Kneecap won the Bafta for outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer. The Irish-language film is based on a semi-fictionalised account of how the band was formed. The film’s English director, Rich Peppiatt, said on accepting the prize: “Kneecap is more than a film, it’s a movement,” adding that everyone should have their language and culture respected. Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve story, a film about the life of the Superman star who was paralysed in a horse riding accident 10 years before his death in 2004, won best documentary. His children took to the stage to honour their late father. Body horror The Substance won make up and hair. The film sees a TV aerobics presenter in her 50s, played by Demi Moore, who takes a ******-market drug to create a younger, more beautiful version of herself. Full of gory effects, the film is the favourite to pick up the same prize at next month’s Oscars. Moore has won best actress at several awards ceremonies so far this season, including the Golden Globe and Critics Choice. She will still be a favourite at the Oscars although Madison’s Bafta win does make things more interesting. 24. Ash Gardner soars again, earns first WPL win as skipper Ash Gardner soars again, earns first WPL win as skipper Ash Gardner has served up a superb allround display in India’s Women’s Premier League for the second time in three days – but this time it was enough for her to celebrate a maiden triumph in her new role as Gujarat Giants captain. Gardner had been fabulous in her first outing as captain in Friday’s season opener, blasting a captain’s knock of 79 not out before taking two quick wickets in six ******, only to find it still couldn’t drag the Giants to a win over champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru. And there was a moment on Sunday when the 27-year-old Sydneysider must have feared her heroics might not suffice again at the same Vadodara ground as she looked disgusted at departing tamely after another terrific half-century in a run chase against UP Warriorz. After powering to 52 off just 32 ****** and looking unstoppable, Gardner deposited a long hop from her *********** international teammate Tahlia McGrath straight into the hands of short fine leg. With her side still needing 58 to win with six wickets standing, it looked as Gujarat might be in danger of missing out again, but a terrific unbroken fifth-wicket stand between big-hitting West Indian Deandra Dottin (33no off 18 ******) and Harleen Deol (34no off 30) steered the Giants to a six-wicket win. “Very pleased,” beamed Gardner, who had earlier taken 2-39 with her spin while also taking a marvellous running catch to get rid of her opposing captain Deepti Sharma. “We weren’t that far off in the other game, and to come out and play the brand of cricket we spoke of, feels special.” Gardner’s form with the bat so far has been particularly special, as she’s hammered 11 sixes in just her first two innings, including a record-equalling eight against RCB. And she’s already the owner of the orange cap as top run-scorer and purple cap as leading wicket-taker. “There’s always things to improve on, but our bowlers did a fantastic job. Priya Mishra, to pick up three wickets at this stage, makes captaincy easy,” said the skipper. Indeed, the spinner Mishra’s 3-25 off four overs, which included the wickets of McGrath for a second-ball duck and Grace Harris for four, was key to keeping Warriorz down to 9-143, a target which Giants surpassed with two overs to spare. Beth Mooney, who’s now vice-captain after giving up the skipper’s armband to Gardner, got caught in an Aussie trap at the top of the Gujarat order, thumping a Harris full toss straight into the hands of McGrath for a golden duck. Here are 5 big things that disappear after you retire in America — are you prepared to lose them all? Here are 5 big things that disappear after you retire in America — are you prepared to lose them all? Retirement is supposed to be the reward after decades of hard work. Morning alarms, office politics and exhausting commutes … gone. The idea of finally having full control of your time is appealing, and for many, it feels like the finish line to a long race. But while you may gain freedom, you’ll also lose more than you think. Some losses, like a steady paycheck, are obvious. Others, like a sense of purpose, sneak up on you. Without a plan — or a big enough nest egg — they can leave you feeling unprepared for what comes next. Here are five things that tend to disappear in retirement, and what you can do now to make sure they don’t take you by surprise. The most immediate and undeniable change in retirement is the disappearance of a steady paycheck. For decades, your income has arrived like clockwork. In its place are managed withdrawals from retirement accounts, Social Security and any other income sources you’ve set up along the way. For many retirees, this transition is more jarring than expected. Moving from accumulation to spending can feel unsettling, an anxiety reflected in a recent study by the National Council on Aging (NCOA). The study found that 80% of older adults are either financially struggling or at risk of economic insecurity in retirement. Inflation only makes matters worse, eroding the value of fixed incomes over time. A solid withdrawal strategy, such as the safe withdrawal rate rule – it had been 4% before dropping recently to 3.7% – can help balance spending and preservation. Diversifying income streams with annuities, rental income or part-time work can also ease financial stress. Delaying Social Security until age 70 can increase your benefits significantly, too. Read more: Rich, young Americans are ditching the stormy stock market — here are the alternative assets they’re banking on instead When you’re working, taking risks with your investments doesn’t feel as scary. If the stock market dips, you know you’ll keep contributing to your 401(k) or IRA, and there’s time to recover. But retirement changes the stakes. Market downturns impact your portfolio and how much you can safely withdraw each year. Story Continues When volatility hits, many retirees shift large portions of their savings into cash or ultra-conservative investments. It may feel safe, but it raises the risk of outliving your money. According to MIT Management, such a move is known as the “sequence of returns risk” (SORR). Early withdrawals during a market downturn can deplete a portfolio faster than anticipated, leaving less capital to recover when markets rebound. A balanced strategy is key. Keeping some exposure to stocks ensures that your money continues growing, while holding one to two years’ worth of cash reserves can help you weather short-term downturns. Work isn’t just about earning money – it provides routine, social interaction and a sense of accomplishment. A study in the National Library of Medicine has linked a lack of purpose in retirement to increased health risks, including depression, cognitive decline and even verbal memory function. The best way to avoid this emotional downturn is to plan beyond just your finances. Volunteering, pursuing passion projects or even taking on part-time work can help fill the void. Losing a paycheck is one thing, but losing employer-sponsored benefits – especially health insurance – can be an even ******* shock. If you retire before 65, you’re on your own until Medicare kicks in, and even then, coverage gaps can lead to unexpected expenses. Medicare doesn’t cover everything. Dental, vision, hearing aids and long-term care are largely out-of-pocket costs, and those can add up quickly. Long-term care, in particular, is a financial landmine – the median national annual cost of a private room in a nursing home is nearly $117,000. Planning ahead is essential. Some retirees opt for Medicare Advantage or Medigap plans to help cover gaps in coverage. Others set aside funds specifically for medical expenses, such as through a health savings account (HSA). Many retirees ramp up travel, dining out and hobbies, leading to what financial planners call the “retirement honeymoon” phase. While this initial surge in spending may feel like well-earned freedom, it’s important to balance it with long-term needs. Healthcare costs tied to aging tend to rise later in retirement, often leading to financial strain if early spending wasn’t kept in check. Tracking expenses and adjusting for different phases of retirement can help ensure financial stability throughout the decades.
