  1. Why China investors have stayed out of China despite stimulus measures Why China investors have stayed out of China despite stimulus measures Professional investors have stayed away from China’s stock markets despite several attempts by the country’s government to revive investment sentiment. An analysis of fund data reveals portfolio managers have steadily lowered their allocation toward China equities since mid-2020 when Beijing intervened in its property sector with the “three red lines” rule to address concerns of a bubble. Many blame Beijing’s repeated interventions — including the stimulus measures that abruptly boost stocks — as a major factor behind their decision to hold back from the world’s second-largest economy’s stock market. Portfolio data from 34 actively managed funds, provided by Morningstar and examined by CNBC, shows that allocation towards China and Hong Kong-listed equities has fallen every year over the past five years. For instance, the HSBC Managed Growth Fund had nearly a fifth of its assets invested in China and Hong Kong stocks in 2020. By late 2024, the fund’s allocation to China had dwindled to 3.4%. HSBC declined to comment. CNBC analyzed only actively managed funds marketed in Hong Kong with geographically unconstrained mandates, such as pan-Asian equity or emerging market funds. Consider the Pando CMS Innovation ETF , which posted 80% returns in 2024 . The fund closed out its positions in ******** companies it previously had due to the investor’s frustrations with valuing a stock that trades in large part due to government policy over fundamentals. “Let’s just say that predicting the policy of ******** stocks market is really hard for us, even [though] we are [in] China,” Yili Yan, director of investor relations at Pando Finance told CNBC in January from Hong Kong. “We understand, but we don’t know when the policy will hit the market,” Yili added. “We would like to embrace certainty over uncertainty.” The ETF sold out of three ******** companies it previously held, Tencent , Alibaba and Meituan , and instead bought U.S. stocks Tesla and AI chip darling Broadcom . “We sold [them] in the second quarter of 2024 not because we don’t like them — they are very good companies — we just like the AI stock more,” said Beck Lee, chief investment officer at Pando. Other investors in the region who sold out of China related investments recently said they regretted not having sold sooner. “We reduced our exposure, although with the benefit of hindsight we should have sold everything,” Wong Kok Hoi, chief investment officer of APS Asset Management in Singapore told CNBC. Will any stimulus measure work? Beijing enacted a flurry of stimulus measures last September, among which included cutting a key short-term interest rate . Interest rates on existing mortgages were also lowered to shore up the country’s embattled property sector. The initial rally of the country’s benchmark CSI 300 following the announcement has largely sputtered by now. As recent as January, China’s financial regulators rolled out a slew of initiatives encouraging major state-owned mutual funds and insurance companies to buy more stocks, as the government strives to strengthen the equities market. Large state-owned insurance companies were instructed to expand both the amount and share of their investments in mainland-listed stocks, with 30% of their newly earned premiums earmarked for stock purchases. Adam Coons, chief investment officer at U.S.-based Winthrop Capital Management welcomed the measures but suggested the firm is likely to have a cautious approach to future investment in China. “Policy is absolutely driving stock prices rather than fundamentals. The economy is showing signs of deflation and economic growth is only occurring due to government stimulus,” Coons said. “We are okay being late to a recovery in ******** equities to help us mitigate the risk of this recovery not being reality.” Investors also believe the recent spate of announcements from Beijing is likely to have a ******* impact than previous half-hearted measures. “I wouldn’t put a lot of stock in, ‘I’m not going to buy the ******** equity market because the authorities want it to go up,’ because ultimately, I think it’s not going to work,” said U.S.-based Brian McCarthy, chief strategist at the hedge fund Emerging Sovereign Group, who is a regular traveler to China. “You have authorities that are openly trying to fight the fundamentals, as authorities do everywhere, but in China, they’re particularly powerful,” said McCarthy. Others have also pointed to investors’ lack of understanding and miscommunication of ******** government policy. “China’s policies undeniably play a significant role in influencing short-term share price movements, as seen by the recent uplift in market sentiment following aggressive interventions,” said Singapore-based Brian Arcese, fund manager at Foord Asset Management. “However, we also observe a disconnect between investor expectations and the approach of ******** policymakers.” “While the government tends to provide directional guidance, investors often seek quantifiable targets and detailed implementation plans, which can create uncertainty and impact market sentiment,” Arcese added. “We believe corporate fundamentals remain the primary driver over the longer term, as sustained growth and performance ultimately depend on the strength of underlying businesses, and their ability to adapt to economic conditions.” Anthony Wallace | Afp | Getty Images Professional investors have stayed away from China’s stock markets despite several attempts by the country’s government to revive investment sentiment. 3. ‘Europe in turmoil’ and ‘Happy ever Bafta’ ‘Europe in turmoil’ and ‘Happy ever Bafta’ *** defence spending continues to dominate Monday’s front pages with a number splashing on the latest from the Munich Security Conference and the ongoing situation in Ukraine. The Daily Mail says “Europe in turmoil” as it reports Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has declined to boost military spending amid a defence crisis in Europe. The Times reports that Sir Keir will act as “bridge” to Donald Trump and US diplomatic envoys as peace talks look set to begin in Saudi Arabia – without Ukraine. Elsewhere on the front, Mikey Madison beams as she clutches her Bafta after she won best actress, playing a sex worker in Anora. The i newspaper reflects on a glitzy night at the Bafta’s as ******** thriller Conclave won the top prize at the film awards in London. Wallace and Gromit join an collage of Hollywood actors in the paper’s feature at the top of the front page. But, the lead story focuses on Europe’s emergency crisis talks on Ukraine war. Europe is scrambling to hold crisis talks on Ukraine and the future of European defence as the US and Russia prepare for Ukraine peace talks in Saudi Arabia, the Financial Times reports. Wearing her trademark long, bejewelled fingernails with a white, lace dress, Wicked’s best lead actress nominee Cynthia Erivo is the feature on the side of Metro as it teases being on the Baftas’ red carpet. The paper leads with the latest from the war in Ukraine after a series of drone strikes broke the seal at the Chernobyl nuclear plant. There is a stark headline on the front of the Guardian as it too splashes on the what it describes as a “sudden transatlantic chasm” over the situation in Ukraine. The paper says it will be laid bare on Monday when US officials start preliminary talks in Riyadh with Russian counterparts over a ceasefire just as Emmanuel Macron hosts a Paris summit of European leaders. In other domestic stories, BBC News presenter Victoria Derbyshire candidly urges people to get screened for breast ******* as thousands are reportedly missing the life-saving checks. Hollywood actress Demi Moore catches the eye on the front of the Sun in her colour blocked sequinned gown which she wore on the Bafta’s red carpet. But, the tabloid’s lead story accuses Chancellor Rachel Reeves of dithering over extra defence spending. An onslaught of pressures are facing farmers, the Daily Express reports saying that there has been a leap in calls to mental health helplines after the government’s inheritance tax “bombshell”. Finally, after – what feels like a long time – the sunshine is due to return to the ***, according to the Daily Star which reports that the mercury could hit 17°C on Friday. Elsewhere, the tabloid pictures Luis Diaz and Mohammed Salah embracing each other after both their goals edged out Wolverhampton Wanderers to keep Liverpool top of the Premier League. 5. Daughter tried to get mom to move from Harlem apartment she wound up murdered in Daughter tried to get mom to move from Harlem apartment she wound up murdered in If she could do it all over again, Claire Nemorin would find a way to make her mother leave her Harlem home and move in with her on Long Island. Her mother, Marie Nemorin, 74, had an independent streak and wasn’t ready to live under someone else’s roof. But she was also too trusting, which may have helped lead to her violent unsolved *******, the distraught daughter said. Marie, a retired nursing assistant, was found dead on her apartment’s bathroom floor on Bradhurst Ave. near W. 149th St. at about 1:05 p.m. on Feb. 23, 2024, by two worried members of her church, officials said. But only last week was her death determined to be a ********* after the city medical examiner made the finding in an autopsy that was initially inconclusive. “She was living by herself,” the daughter said. “She was an independent person but very active.” But she wasn’t careful enough, a neighbor said. “She was a wonderful lady. She was like a grandmother to me,” said Larissa Liburd, 35, who lived in the building on Bradhurst Ave. near W. 149th St., where Nemorin lived and died. “But she always left her door open, and I always said to her, ‘Close your door, someone could come in and kill you.’” Somebody eventually did. Cops said there still have been no arrests but based on evidence from the medical examiner, Nemorin’s death was definitely a *********. After the initial autopsy, further testing was required before a final determination could be made on her cause of death. The testing recently confirmed Nemorin died from blunt-force trauma, according to a spokesman for the medical examiner. The victim’s family was in the dark for nearly a year on whether she was a victim of foul play. “We have been waiting on an update, but we didn’t have enough information,” the victim’s daughter said. “We are just waiting and waiting. And now we are waiting for cops to get the person who did this.” The daughter said she can’t conceive of anyone wanting to harm her mother. “She never complained to me about someone wanting to hurt her,” she said. “The cops told us that the apartment was a mess. It was upside down. I believe it was like someone was fighting with her.” The neighbor said she never suspected foul play. “I thought it was a heart attack,” Liburd said. “I didn’t realize her head was bashed in.” She noted that Nemorin regularly left the door to her studio apartment ajar. “I don’t even think she had keys,” she said. Claire said she tried to get her stubborn mother to move out of Harlem, but she wouldn’t hear of it. “I wanted to do something for my mother to live closer to me,” she said. “But I know I couldn’t just grab her and force her to live with me.” “I would always visit her to give money and give her things she needed,” she added. “I wanted her to live with me or other family and be close to family. She was far from family in Manhattan.” Her mother was from Haiti and moved to New York in 1980. “She was very religious,” the daughter said. “She used to preach on the streets in Haiti, giving out pamphlets to people passing by.” Claire Nemorin said she hates the thought of her mother being alone when she died. “I hope cops get this person. There have to be fingerprints, cameras, something,” she said. “I just want to know why? She was a defenseless person. She couldn’t fight. Why would anyone do this to her? She has a family. Just because someone lives by themselves doesn’t mean they don’t have a family.” Source link #Daughter #mom #move #Harlem #apartment #wound #murdered Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  7. Lyon in the goals again as Lille, Nice also win Lyon in the goals again as Lille, Nice also win After 10 goals in three games, new coach Paulo Fonseca’s pledge to bring attacking soccer back to Lyon is holding firm. Sunday’s 4-1 win at Montpellier in Ligue 1 saw four different Lyon players on target for the second straight game. Under previous coach Pierre Sage, the team was looking laborious and had scored only five goals in six games without a win before he was fired. Veteran striker Alexandre Lacazette completed the rout for Lyon, who stayed in sixth place because Lille won 2-0 at Rennes in the late game to retain fifth spot. After poking in Lille’s opening goal from close range following a corner, Nabil Bentaleb sprinted to the bench and was hugged by everyone there. With good reason. The Algeria midfielder only started training again last month after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest in mid-June last year. He was put into an artificial coma and fitted with a pacemaker-defibrillator days later. The former Tottenham and Schalke midfielder’s goal also prompted a big smile from Lille coach Bruno Genesio and Chuba Akpom was played in by Mitchel Bakker six minutes later against 13th-placed Rennes. “It’s incredible. These images will remain engraved for life,” Bentaleb told match broadcaster DAZN. “There are things that are not forgotten and that I will not forget when I stop playing football.” The race for third place promises to be intense, with Nice reclaiming it from Riviera rivals Monaco on goal difference after winning 3-1 at lowly Le Havre. Both Nice and Monaco have 40 points and trail second-placed Marseille by six points, with runaway leaders PSG a further 10 points ahead. In other results, Strasbourg won 2-0 at Lens to leapfrog the northern side — also on goal difference — and move into seventh place, and Angers won 1-0 at Reims. 8. How Trump’s new passport rules impact cruisers, cruise lines How Trump’s new passport rules impact cruisers, cruise lines Americans traveling abroad who have a passport had the option of selecting “male,” “female,” or “X.” That choice would be eliminated should an Executive Order issued by President Donald Trump clear the many legal challenges it’s likely to face including a lawsuit filed by the ACLU. The new Executive Order only allows people to pick the gender they were assigned at birth. That’s something non-binary and transgender people have taken clear issue with. “The new lawsuit was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU of Massachusetts, and law firm Covington & Burling LLP, on behalf of seven people who have not been able to obtain passports that match who they are because of the State Department’s new Passport Policy or are likely to be impacted by the new policy upon their next renewal. The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts,” according to an ACLU press release. The lawsuit is seeking to prevent Trump’s order from being enforced. “The plaintiffs in this case have had their lives disrupted by a chaotic policy clearly motivated by animus that serves zero public interest,” said Sruti Swaminathan, Staff Attorney for the ACLU’s LGBTQ & **** Project. “Our clients need to travel for work, school, and family, and forcing them to carry documents that directly contradict what they know about themselves to be true – or withhold those documents altogether–is a blatant effort to violate their privacy and deny them their freedom to be themselves.” Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter to save money on your next (or your first) cruise. Every cruise passenger has a private bathroom in their cabin.Image source: Dan Kline/Come Cruise With Me What does Trump’s Executive Order say? The cruise industry does not have to ask for a passport for most closed-loop cruises — that is a cruise that starts and ends in one U.S. port or starts in one U.S. port and and ends in a second U.S. port. There are countries where passports are required, and sailings that don’t sail from the U.S. generally require a passport. It is important to note that this is the document as Trump and his administration have delivered it. Trump’s Executive Order included the following: Sec. 2. Policy and Definitions. It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female. These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality. Under my direction, the Executive Branch will enforce all sex-protective laws to promote this reality, and the following definitions shall govern all Executive interpretation of and application of Federal law and administration policy: (a) “Sex” shall refer to an individual’s immutable biological classification as either male or female. “Sex” is not a synonym for and does not include the concept of “gender identity.” (b) “Women” or “woman” and “girls” or “girl” shall mean adult and juvenile human females, respectively. (c) “Men” or “man” and “boys” or “boy” shall mean adult and juvenile human males, respectively. (d) “Female” means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the large reproductive cell. (e) “Male” means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the small reproductive cell. There is also a specific passage related to passports and other government-issued documents: The Secretaries of State and Homeland Security, and the Director of the Office of Personnel Management, shall implement changes to require that government-issued identification documents, including passports, visas, and Global Entry cards, accurately reflect the holder’s sex, as defined under section 2 of this order; and the Director of the Office of Personnel Management shall ensure that applicable personnel records accurately report Federal employees’ sex, as defined by section 2 of this order. Are you taking a cruise or thinking about taking one? Visit our Come Cruise With Me website to have all your questions answered. What this means for cruise lines Cruise lines have public gendered bathrooms but do not have posted rules for who can use them. In theory, any passenger can use the bathroom of the gender they identify as, not whatever gender appears on their passport. Most cruise ships also have some bathrooms designated for families. These are facilities designed for a parent and child, and they could also be used by anyone uncomfortable sharing a bathroom. While the new Trump administration rules could force someone to have a different gender on their passport than the one they identify as that should not have an impact on cruising. There’s no language in the Executive Order that specifically requires private businesses to force people to use the bathroom of the gender listed on their identification. These new rules, should they eventually be declared legal, should not impact the cruise industry aside from forcing passengers to have passports where their gender does not match their identity. No cruise line has a posted rule about which passengers can use which bathroom. All passengers also have the option of using the bathroom in their cabins, and some of the public gendered bathrooms are single-person anyways. At least five people were seriously injured in Friday’s accident along Interstate 80 near the small town of Green River, Wyoming. The ****** sparked a fire inside the tunnel that completely destroyed six commercial vehicles and two passenger vehicles. 16. ‘I want to go out with a bang’: Leo Thompson’s vow to Knights fans after ‘hard’ decision to join Bulldogs ‘I want to go out with a bang’: Leo Thompson’s vow to Knights fans after ‘hard’ decision to join Bulldogs Leo Thompson has broken his silence on his much-publicised move to the Bulldogs, with the Maori All Stars forward glad that everything has been put to bed before the season while he’s vowed “to go out with a bang” in his final year with the Knights. The 24-year-old international star was one of the most sought-after players on the open market, with several clubs including the Raiders desperate to sign him, only for Thompson to settle on a four-year deal with Canterbury. Middle forwards are a valuable commodity, which is why the Bulldogs were so keen to sign the powerhouse prop who is coming off his best year in the NRL and will only get better as he continues to evolve. There were reports Thompson was set to sign with the Green Machine given his partner is from Canberra and he used to be in the Raiders system, but he eventually settled on the boys in blue and white. “Everything’s been put to bed now and I can just focus on my season with Newcastle, so I’m happy that’s out of the way. I’m just focused on this year,” he said after the All Stars game. “It was hard. It took me a while to come to terms with it, but it is what it is and I’ve made my decision. “The club and my teammates have been understanding of it and they know that I’ve put that aside and I’m going to be with the Newcastle Knights 100 per cent this year.” The Knights are now in an interesting position given Thompson is leaving. There are reports that Jayden Brailey could be squeezed out, while veterans Dane Gagai and Tyson Frizell are at the back end of their careers but still playing great footy. It’s why there’s a “last ride” feeling coming out of the club. “Because I know that this is going to be my last year with Newcastle, I want to go out with a bang,” Thompson said. “There are a few of our boys that are getting along like ‘Friz’ and ‘Gags’. Hopefully, they keep playing for the next 3-4 years, but we don’t know how long they’re going to be playing for. “That’s a bit of a vibe in our team that we need to make it happen this year.” As for what sealed the deal for him to choose the Bulldogs, Thompson wasn’t keen to divulge whether Phil Gould took him out for his patented ******** meal. “That’s between us,” he laughed. “I’m not worried about the Bulldogs this year. I’m all Newcastle.” Source link #bang #Leo #Thompsons #vow #Knights #fans #hard #decision #join #Bulldogs Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  19. Under-fire Spurs happy to heap more misery on Man Utd Under-fire Spurs happy to heap more misery on Man Utd James Maddison was happy to respond in the right way to a “big-profile name” after his 13th-minute goal gave Tottenham a 1-0 victory over Manchester United. The two teams started the day closer to the Premier League relegation zone than the top six and it was Spurs who gained three points following a 10th goal of the campaign by the fit-again Maddison. Maddison celebrated with a shush to the camera after midweek criticism from ex-Man United captain Roy Keane, who questioned how much of a difference the Tottenham playmaker being available would make to Ange Postecoglou. “Just a little bit of outside noise wasn’t there, this week? Listen, people have their opinions, but I wanted to do my talking on the pitch today, so I hope there’s a certain few that enjoyed me being the match-winner,” Maddison told Sky Sports. Postecoglou had not been aware of Maddison’s celebration but was not surprised that the 28-year-old threw a shot back at Keane. “Everybody has mentioned his celebration but I didn’t see it so I can’t comment on it, but it doesn’t surprise me that Madders didn’t accept what was being said about him and threw a shot back over the bow,” Postecoglou said. This first home league win for Tottenham since November 3 moved them up to 12th and eased the growing scrutiny on their manager after they exited the League and FA Cups in the space of 72 hours earlier this month. Spurs were without 11 players for their cup defeat at Aston Villa but the roles were reversed for this fixture with the hosts boosted by the return of Guglielmo Vicario and Maddison, while United lost Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo and Amad Diallo to injury over the weekend and were without 12 in total. When Postecoglou was asked if he had sympathy for Ruben Amorim’s current injury crisis, the *********** joked: “If I check my office, I don’t have any sympathy cards from other managers, so that hasn’t happened! “I could see Ruben there, players out of position, kids on the bench. Well, welcome to my world, but that’s for one game. Now do that for two months. “I thought Man United were good today, considering all that and we had our days when we were good, we beat Liverpool in this spell. Do that for two months.” Amorim acknowledged: “I think the big difference was the goal they scored. We didn’t score. “I have a lot of problems. My job is so hard but I’m here to continue my job to the next week with my beliefs. I will try to do it, I will try to win again. “Sometimes in moments, everything goes wrong but we have to face the challenge and to focus on the next game. That’s all.” Source link #Underfire #Spurs #happy #heap #misery #Man #Utd Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  22. Pledge of two million extra NHS appointments met Pledge of two million extra NHS appointments met A key election pledge to deliver two million extra NHS appointments in its first year in power, the prime minister has said. The government says the target was achieved between July and November last year, when there were almost 2.2 million more elective care appointments compared to the same ******* in 2023. This was compared with the same ******* in 2023, when the number of appointments would have been affected by doctors strikes at the time. Sir Keir Starmer said the “milestone is a shot in the arm for our plan to get the NHS back on its feet and cut waiting times”, while NHS England chief Amanda Pritchard, said there was “much more to do to slash waiting times for patients”. Delivering an extra two million NHS operations, procedures and appointments a year in England was a central Labour manifesto pledge – and was included in a list of six first steps it would take in office. The additional appointments were delivered in part by extra evening and weekend working, the government said. Elective care covers a broad range of planned, non-emergency services, from diagnostic tests and scans to outpatient appointments, surgeries and ******* treatment. There 31.3 million operations, appointments and tests between July and November 2024, compared to 29.1 million over the same ******* in 2023, during which there were over a dozen days of junior doctors strikes. It said NHS England data showed the manifesto commitment had been meet seven months early. Sir Keir Starmer said the government was “not complacent” and knows “the job isn’t done”, as he promised further reforms to deliver faster treatment. He unveiled plans in January to tackle the NHS backlog, which is one of the government’s key missions. The government has announced an extra £40m in funding for trusts who make the biggest improvements in cutting waiting lists, with the money available for hospitals from next year to spend on capital projects. Health Secretary Wes Streeting said the NHS was “on the road to recovery” and there were now around 160,000 fewer patients on waiting lists than when Labour took office in July last year. NHS England figures showed last week that the number of people on the waiting list dropped for the fourth consecutive month to its lowest since April 2023. An estimated 6.24 million patients were waiting for 7.46 million treatments to be carried out at the end of December in England – down from 6.28 million patients needing 7.48 million treatments in November. However, the latest figures show 73% of A&E patients were treated or assessed within four hours in England in January – well short of the 95% target and a key benchmark of A&E performance. And the numbers of A&E patients enduring long waits went up in January, with nearly 160,000 waiting longer than four hours for a bed to be found after a decision to admit them – many on chairs or trolleys. Liberal Democrat health spokeswoman Helen Morgan said: “Until the government gets a grip of social care, hospitals will remain overwhelmed, backlogged and it is the patients who will pay the price.” She added: “Too many people have been tragically let down and left waiting in limbo.” Streeting has previously defended the government’s timescale for reforming adult social care in England, with proposals on its long-term funding unlikely to be delivered before 2028.
