ADCA 2024-25: Lions and Bulls stumble in disappointing one-day losses, Tigers big winners with game in hand
ADCA 2024-25: Lions and Bulls stumble in disappointing one-day losses, Tigers big winners with game in hand
Manypeaks and Collingwood Park caused major upsets in round 17 of the Albany and Districts Cricket Association A-grade competition on Saturday.
Royals and Mt Barker both missed the chance to secure vital points in the race for top spot and direct qualification into next month’s one-day final.
The Lions lost in the final over of their clash with Park, who held their nerve to secure a five-run win against the reigning premiers.
The Bulls also had a day to forget, as they were skittled for 67 after being set 115 to win by Peaks.
The big winners from the results were Railways who had the bye on Saturday but have a game in hand and sit just two points adrift of top spot.
Peaks slim finals hopes remain alive after their crushing 47-run bonus point victory on a tricky deck at Turf East.
In Seb Stanton’s 100th game Peaks won the toss and batted first but quickly slumped to 6-34 as their top order crumbled.
Paul Donaldson and Ben Southern were out for ducks, Stanton managed one and skipper Regan Poett fell for nine.
Ryan Kinnear tried to dig in making 13 from 49 ****** and Tom Leaver was also patient in his nine off 52.
However Peaks were able to pass 100 thanks to a lower order cameo from Casey Ganzer.
Ganzer smacked five sixes in his 48 from just 30 deliveries as Peaks reached 114 all out.
Jack Pope (3-6) helped clean up the tail while Bulls teammates Lucas Baker (2-33) and Ryan Gaerth (2-9) also took multiple wickets.
Bulls recruit Mitch Jackson opened the bowling, returning four maidens in his 1-20.
Cameron Walsh delivered two crucial early blows with the ball, removing Alex Fergie (5) and Pope (5) before the Bulls middle order folded.
Walsh’s impact on the result was enormous as he then took the scalps of Gaerth (2) and Bulls skipper Jeremy Wood (0) to have them in all sorts of trouble at 4-21.
Nathan Crosby (15) and Jarrad Gardner (10) were the only pair to reach double figures as the Bulls were bowled out inside 32 overs.
Youngster Oliver Douglas snared 3-11 from a terrific seven-over spell and Josh Wallis chipped in with 2-6 while Paul Donaldson got the big wicket of Jackson.
Park notched their second one-day win of the season and first triumph in the 50-over format since November when they rattled a fragile Lions batting line-up at Turf North.
The Lions were set 161 to win but once again their was little support for captain Mitch Green.
Green looked the most comfortable of the Lions batters but fell two runs shy of a half century and his side added only 25 more after his dismissal.
Tyler Crommelin was brought into the team and made 21 before he was clean bowled but experienced players Lincoln Joy (9), Matt France (6) and Ryley Valli (12) all fell cheaply.
Matt Thompson (8no) and Hayden Davies (8) added 16 runs for the final wicket, taking the game to the final over but Hayden Davies was run out with three ****** remaining to hand Park a deserved win.
Leroy van den Dool bowled impressively to snare 3-15 and Jesse Spaanderman (1-9 from five overs) was hard to get away while Freddie Sharp and O’Shea Durack took the big wickets of Joy and Valli respectively.
Buddy Robinson showed great poised at No.4 earlier on, hitting four boundaries but valuing his wicket in a 74-ball innings for 43 runs.
Contributions from van den Dool (37), Byron Spaanderman (21), Durack (16) and Dash Germinario (16) helped Park finish 9-160.
Quicks Hayden Davies (2-16) and Matt Thompson (2-28) were the pick of the bowlers for the Lions who have lost three of their last four one-day games.

Terrifying balcony collapse at Los Angeles home rattles residents
Terrifying balcony collapse at Los Angeles home rattles residents
LOS ANGELES (KTLA) – A balcony collapse in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles Saturday night rattled residents and sent one person to the hospital.
The incident, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department, occurred at around 11:20 p.m. in the 800 block of Robinson Street, near Marathon Street.
“We heard a ***** in the night, and we got out of bed. We had just gone to bed,” neighbor John McCauley told KTLA’s Gene Kang. “We came out on the balcony, and we could hear some moaning on the other side. Luckily, we’re not directly underneath the balcony that collapsed.”
McCauley explained that his neighbors, four people and a dog, had been out on the balcony, which was three stories up, enjoying the evening when it suddenly gave way, crashing down onto the balcony directly beneath them.
“I called 911 and we just kind of jumped into action,” he said. “We knew something was horribly going on and it was very surreal.”

Thinking quickly, McCauley’s wife grabbed sheets and used them to help pull the people, who were trapped in the corner with furniture on top of them, off the compromised structure.

In footage of the incident obtained by KTLA, city fire trucks lined the cramped neighborhood streets while responding to the collapse.
Of the people on the balcony, one was taken to the hospital with what appeared to be injuries to her wrist while the other three declined medical treatment. The dog was also uninjured.
In a video of the collapsed balcony, it appeared as if the structure’s right side gave way. The extent of the damage to the balcony below it is not known.
“They were a little shaken up, but everybody is just so grateful that everyone is healthy and safe,” McCauley said.
Inspectors with the L.A. Department of Building and Safety reportedly told the residents that recent heavy rains compromised the structure and led to its collapse.

‘Take that administrative burden away’: Graham Annesley explains key changes at head office as obstruction tweak comes under the spotlight
‘Take that administrative burden away’: Graham Annesley explains key changes at head office as obstruction tweak comes under the spotlight
NRL head of football Graham Annesley has explained the changes made to the refereeing department.
Jared Maxwell will focus on bunker accuracy, while Brock Schaefer has been promoted to focus on high performance in the game.
Schaefer spent a decade at the Rabbitohs before he stepped down from his role as chief operating officer last year and will now play a key role in head office where he’ll focus on high performance for referees, the Kangaroos and Jillaroos.
“We want to try and free up more coaching resources in the refereeing department,” Annesley explained.
“Jared Maxwell had a dual role of not only managing the department but also coaching, which kind of divided his attention on a pretty regular basis.
“By freeing up our coaching resources and bringing in some additional football expertise from someone who has spent an extensive ******* of time in a club (will help us).
Camera IconBrock Schaefer (left) has been promoted to a key role to help referees. Brendan Radke Credit: News Corp Australia
“He (Schaefer) won’t be a technical adviser because he’s not a referee – he’s a manager – and he’ll have a look at their structure, their processes and how they interact with clubs.
“That will take all that administrative burden away and put all the focus on coaching.
“Jared will move more into a Bunker role, which is where he came from originally before he took over the management role, and Brock will oversee the day-to-day management.”
It’s been a relatively controversy free start to the pre-season, with Annesley explaining the need to make a slight adjustment to the obstruction interpretations after defenders were being rewarded for poor reads.
The Bunker had its first test on Sunday when the referee ruled no try for what he thought was an obstruction on David Fifita, but Kasey Badger saw it differently and awarded the try to Brisbane because “Jack Gosiewski runs through space, the Titans defender then initiates the contact on him as a defensive decision”.
The call divided opinions in the Fox League commentary box, but it could be a line-in-the-sand moment for the upcoming season.
“There will always be differences of opinions over obstruction,” Annesley said.
“It doesn’t matter what rules and indicators we have in place because it ultimately comes down to people looking at something and saying ‘I think it’s obstruction’ and others saying ‘I don’t think it is’.
“Some of the changes that we made in the off-season were in consultation with some of our leading coaches.
“It became apparent that over the last couple of seasons, the match officials have tended to default more in favour of the defensive team rather than good deceptive attacking play.
“The whole idea of lead runners is to try to fool the defence, not to take out defensive players. What we had seen develop is that the scales were tipped too much in favour of the defensive team, and that was leading to defensive players playing for obstruction.
“We made some philosophical decisions that successful deception in attacking plays should still be rewarded, and poor defensive reads – or defenders trying to milk penalties – should not be rewarded.
“It’s about trying to find that balance and to put some onus back on attack and defence.”

Jordan Bos in extreme doubt for Australia’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month
Jordan Bos in extreme doubt for Australia’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers next month
Talented left-back Jordan Bos seems certain to miss the Socceroos’ FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Indonesia and China next month because of a hamstring injury expected to sideline him for several weeks.
Bos, who was replaced in the first half of his Belgian club Westerlo’s 4-2 win over Standard Liege on February 10, took no part in his team’s 1-1 draw with Cercle Brugge on Monday morning (AEDT).
It’s understood that the former Melbourne City prodigy is unlikely to be returning to action anytime soon, casting serious doubt that he will be available for Australia’s games against Indonesia (March 20, Sydney) and China (March 25, Hangzhou).
Another injury concern for the Socceroos ahead of the qualifiers is goalkeeper and captain Mat Ryan, who has missed a second successive match for his French club Lens with a hip injury.
Ryan joined Lens last month from Italian club Roma, and started in consecutive wins over Angers (1-0) and Montpellier (2-0) before his injury.
Lens have lost both of their matches – 2-0 to Nice and 2-0 to Strasbourg – since Ryan was sidelined.
However, in better news for the Socceroos, teenage sensation Nestory Irankunda recovered from a leg injury to play for his Swiss Super League club Grasshoppers against Servette.
Despite Grasshoppers losing 2-1, Irankunda impressed. His performance included a header that hit the crossbar in the 12th minute and earning his team a first-half penalty – scored by Tsiy Ndenge – after being fouled by Servette goalkeeper Joel Mall.
Irankunda, who also had a shot saved by Mall, was eventually replaced in the 80th minute by Argentine attacker Tomas Veron Lupi.
Elsewhere, Socceroos midfielder Jackson Irvine’s ******* club team St. Pauli suffered a 1-0 home loss to Freiburg.
Irvine, who gave away a penalty in the match that wasn’t converted by Freiburg’s Italian midfielder Vincenzo Grifo, was left to lament a “big chance” he missed from a set piece.
“It was a typical game for us,” Irvine said.
“Both teams defended very well and were unable to create many chances.
“We were very solid at the back. In the first half, the long ****** almost took us by surprise, but we dealt with them much better in the second half.
“Not a lot happened after the penalty. I had a big chance from a set piece, and in the end it was a close encounter that didn’t go our way.”
Meanwhile, in Austria, wing-back Jacob Italiano continued his bid for Socceroos recognition, playing the full game for Grazer AK in a 0-0 draw with Lask.
Elsewhere in the Austrian top-flight, former Macarthur FC winger Jed Drew made his debut for Hartberg, playing for 70 minutes before being replaced in his new club’s 1-1 draw with SK Austria Klagenfurt.

Body matching missing University of Colorado Boulder student Megan Trussell recovered
Body matching missing University of Colorado Boulder student Megan Trussell recovered
A body matching the description of a University of Colorado student who went missing last week was found in a “hard-to-reach” area of Boulder Canyon, authorities said.
City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks rangers alerted authorities shortly after 10:40 a.m. local time on Saturday that a deceased female was discovered near the 40-mile marker of Boulder Canyon, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said.
When investigators arrived at the scene, they found a body that matched the description of 18-year-old Megan Trussell, who went missing on Feb. 9. A GoFundMe page on Sunday transitioned from helping find her to memorializing her. “We will always cherish the memories of Megan’s vibrant spirit and the love she shared with us,” the organizer wrote.
“The decedent’s name is not being released at this time, pending identification confirmation and notification of next of kin,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement Saturday. “The Boulder County Coroner’s Office will also determine the cause and manner of death.”
Megan Trussell, 18, was last seen at her residence hall on the University of Colorado Boulder campus on Feb. 9, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.GoFundMe page)
The body was found in “hard-to-reach terrain” that required first responders to rappel and conduct a technical evacuation, according to the sheriff’s office.
Missing University of Colorado student last seen on campus
Trussell was last seen on Feb. 9 at around 10 p.m. on the University of Colorado Boulder campus, according to several law enforcement agencies. Authorities described her as an indigenous female with red hair and brown eyes.
She was last seen at her residence hall on campus, wearing a blue or gray jacket, dark-colored or red yoga-style pants and white platform sneakers, authorities said. She was also carrying a “distinct” blue purse with a pink star, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
The CU Boulder Police Department reported Trussell’s disappearance on Thursday and said the department was working with “local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and first responders on campus, on the ground and in the air.”
The FBI’s field office in Denver also said it was assisting in the search for her. On Friday, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation issued a statewide Missing Indigenous Person Alert for Trussell.
Megan Trussell, 18, was last seen at her residence hall on the University of Colorado Boulder campus on Feb. 9, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
A family friend of the Trussell family, Judy Brocato, told television station Denver7 that Trussell’s phone had pinged in Boulder Canyon the night she disappeared. Brocato had helped with the volunteer search on Saturday.
Brocato noted that Trussell “wasn’t much of a hiker” and that it was cold that evening, according to Denver7. A strong storm system has blanketed parts of Colorado over the weekend, bringing cold temperatures and periods of heavy snow over, the National Weather Service in Boulder said.
“It is very perplexing how she just seems to have disappeared,” she told Denver7. “It doesn’t make sense. So, we’re just trying to piece that together.”

Investigation and recovery of remains
A stretch of Boulder Canyon Drive, also known as Highway 119, was temporarily closed between the city of Boulder and the town of Nederland during the investigation, the Colorado Department of Transportation said.
Megan Trussell, 18, was last seen at her residence hall on the University of Colorado Boulder campus on Feb. 9, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
The Boulder Canyon Trail, a 2.6 mile trail that runs along Boulder Creek and Boulder Canyon Drive, was also temporarily closed, according to Boulder County Parks and Open Space. The trail reopened shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday.
The road closure allowed “investigators access to recover the decedent, conduct the investigation, and for the safety of first responders working in the area due hazardous road conditions created by the weather,” the sheriff’s office said.
Several local agencies and volunteer groups assisted in the investigation, which is being led by the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and the Boulder County Coroner’s Office.

North Korea’s Kim makes rare visit to father’s tomb
North Korea’s Kim makes rare visit to father’s tomb
By Hyonhee Shin
SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has paid his respect at a family mausoleum to mark the birthday of his late father and former leader Kim Jong Il, state media KCNA said on Monday.
Kim Jong Il’s birthday, which falls on Feb. 16, is widely celebrated as a major holiday in North Korea, called the Day of the Shining Star.
But it was the first time in four years that the young Kim visited the Kumsusan Palace of Sun in the capital Pyongyang, which houses the embalmed bodies of his father and grandfather, for the anniversary.

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
Accompanied by Kim Yo Jong, his sister and a senior ruling Workers’ Party official, among other aides, Kim Jong Un paid homage “in the humblest reverence,” KCNA said.
“He expressed his solemn will to devote himself to the sacred struggle for the eternal prosperity of the country, the security of the people and the promotion of their well-being,” it said.
The Kim dynasty that has ruled North Korea since its founding after World War Two and has sought to strengthen their grip on power by building cults of personality around them, though Kim Jong Un has shown signs of increasingly trying to stand more on his own feet without relying on his predecessors.
In another dispatch, KCNA said Kim attended a groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday for the final phase of his **** project to build 50,000 new homes in Pyongyang.
The ambitious initiative was launched in 2021 as part of Kim’s five-year plan to boost the economy, and designed to distribute at least 10,000 new apartments in Pyongyang each year, though some analysts have questioned its feasibility amid international sanctions and economic woes.
During the ceremony, Kim lauded construction workers and officials for achieving nearly 400% progress last year compared to 2020, and pledged another plan to continue expanding the city.
The project would “usher in a new era of prosperity of Pyongyang in which the ideal streets of the people to be proud of in the world are built every year,” KCNA said.

How Trump’s ‘drill, baby, drill’ pledge is affecting other countries
How Trump’s ‘drill, baby, drill’ pledge is affecting other countries

Trump has said the US’s oil and gas will be sold all over the world
The UN climate summit in the United Arab Emirates in 2023 ended with a call to “transition away from fossil fuels”. It was applauded as a historic milestone in global climate action.
Barely a year later, however, there are fears that the global commitment may be losing momentum as the growth of clean energy transition is slowing down while burning of fossil fuels continues to rise.
And now there is US President Donald Trump’s “national energy emergency”, embracing fossil fuels and ditching clean energy policies – that has also begun to influence some countries and energy companies already.
In response to Trump’s “drill, baby, drill” slogan aimed at ramping up fossil fuel extraction and the US notifying the UN of its withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement, Indonesia, for instance, has hinted that it may follow suit.
Getty Images
The US is already the world’s largest oil and gas producer
‘If US is not doing it, why should we?’
“If the United States does not want to comply with the international agreement, why should a country like Indonesia comply with it?” asked Hashim Djojohadikusumo, special envoy for climate change and energy of Indonesia, as reported by the country’s government-run news agency Antara.
Indonesia has remained in the list of top 10 carbon-emitting countries for years now.
“Indonesia produces three tons of carbon [per person a year] while the US produces 13 tons,” he asked at the ESG Sustainable Forum 2025 in Jakarta on 31 January.
“Yet we are the ones being told to close our power plants… So, where is the sense of justice here?”
Nithi Nesadurai, director with Climate Action Network Southeast Asia, said the signals from her region were concerning.
She said the richest “richest country and the largest oil producer in the world” increasing its production gives other states “an easy excuse to increase their own – which they are already doing”.
In South Africa, Africa’s biggest economy and a major carbon emitter, a $8.5bn foreign-aided transition project from the coal-sector was already moving at a snail’s pace, and now there are fears that it may get derailed further.
Wikus Kruger, director of Power Futures Lab at the University of Cape Town, said there was a “possibility” that decommissioning of old coal-fired power stations would be “further delayed”.
However he said that while there was some “walk back” from transition to renewables, there was still growth in the clean energy sector that was expected to continue.
Getty Images
Major carbon-emitting developing countries like Indonesia say they should not be expected to cut emissions while top emitters like US carry on producing and burning more fossil fuels
Argentina withdrew its negotiators from the COP29 climate meeting in Baku last November, days after Trump won the US presidency. It has since followed Trump’s lead in signalling it will withdraw from the Paris Agreement of 2015 – which underpins global efforts to combat climate change.
“We now expect our oil and gas production to go up,” Enrique Viale, president of Argentine Association of Environmental Lawyers told the BBC.
“President Milei has hinted that he intends to withdraw from the Paris Agreement and has said the environmentalism is part of the woke agenda.”
Meanwhile, energy giant Equinor has just announced it is halving investment in renewable energy over the next two years while increasing oil and gas production and another oil major BP is expected to make similar announcement soon.
Getty Images
Although global clean energy investment has surpassed $2tn for the first time, its growth has slowed in recent years
“American energy all over the world”
Trump has not just said “drill, baby, drill” but he has also said: “We will export American energy all over the world.”
Potential foreign buyers are already lining up.
India and the US have agreed to significantly increase the supply of American oil and gas to the Indian market.
At the end of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s US visit on 14 February, the two countries issued a joint statement that “reaffirmed” the US would be “a leading supplier of crude oil and petroleum products and liquified natural gas to India”.
A few days after Trump’s inauguration, South Korea, the world’s third largest liquified natural gas importer, has hinted its intention to buy more American oil and gas aimed at reducing trade surplus with the US and improving energy security, international media have reported from Seoul.
Officials with Japan’s largest power generator, JERA, have told Reuters they too want to increase purchase of liquefied natural gas from the US to diversify supply as it currently imports half of it from the Asia Pacific region.
“There is certainly a threat that if the U.S. seeks to either flood markets with cheap fossil fuels, or bully countries into buying more of its fossil fuels, or both, the global energy transition might be slowed,” said Lorne Stockman, research director with Oil Change International, a research and advocacy organisation for transition to clean energy.

Scientists have said there can be no new fossil fuel extraction and there needs to be a rapid reduction of carbon emissions (around 45% by 2030 from 2019 level) if the world is to limit warming to 1.5 Celsius compared to pre-industrial *******.
“The economics of energy supply are a key driver of decarbonization,” said David Brown, director of energy transition practice at Wood Mackenzie, a global energy think-tank.
“The resource base of US energy supports the role of natural gas and liquids production. By contrast, import-dependent economies such as China, India, and those in Southeast Asia have a dramatic economic incentive to decarbonise sources of energy.”
Global energy transition investment has surpassed $2tn for the first time last year but studies have also shown that the growth of clean energy transition has markedly slowed in recent years while many major banks continue to finance fossil fuels.

Falling Star offered $650m lifeline for ailing casinos
Falling Star offered $650m lifeline for ailing casinos
Embattled casino operator Star Entertainment Group has been offered a five-year financial lifeline worth $650 million after a series of bruising battles with regulators over scandals at its venues.
The proposal would require approval from the NSW and Queensland governments, and would still leave the company short of funds before the deal kicked in.
The board is considering the proposal from Oaktree Capital Management, a US firm majority owned by ********* giant Brookfield Asset Management, to provide up to $650 million in funding across five years, The Star announced on Monday.
“There is no certainty that the proposal will be progressed, that the conditions to the proposal will be satisfied, or that the proposal will be implemented,” the company said in an announcement to the *********** stock market.
“If The Star proceeds with the proposal, the company will require additional funding for the ******* prior to the proposal being implemented.
“There remains material uncertainty as to the group’s ability to continue as a going concern.”
The casino operator has recently been in talks with Hong Kong-based firms offering to buy its 50 per cent share in Brisbane’s Queen’s Wharf entertainment precinct, which opened in August.
The Star also operates a casino on Queensland’s Gold Coast and in Sydney, where the NSW Independent Casino Commission is keeping a close eye on its operations.
The company has been battling a cash crunch that threatens to push it into insolvency as its revenues continue to slide.
It ended the year with just $78 million in cash available, losing more than $8 million in the final quarter of 2024.
The Star has been struggling since the fallout from a high-profile money-laundering scandal in 2021 that steered lucrative high rollers away from its casinos.
Former executives and board members have also been accused of putting profit above risk and failing to take action to prevent money laundering in a case brought by the *********** Securities and Investments Commission that began Federal Court hearings earlier in February.

Is United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS) Low PE High Dividend Stock to Buy Now?
Is United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS) Low PE High Dividend Stock to Buy Now?
We recently published a list of 10 Low PE High Dividend Stocks to Buy Now. In this article, we are going to take a look at where United Parcel Service, Inc. (NYSE:UPS) stands against other low PE high dividend stocks to buy now.
A low price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio indicates that a stock may be undervalued relative to its earnings, presenting a potential buying opportunity for investors looking to acquire shares at a reasonable price. Stocks that combine low P/E ratios with high dividend yields tend to attract those seeking both value and steady income.
One of the reasons these investment strategies remain effective is their long history of delivering strong returns. Approaches centered on identifying undervalued stocks or prioritizing dividend-paying companies have consistently produced favorable results over time. Heartland Advisors referenced a study analyzing US stock returns from 1802 to 2002, which found that dividends and their growth contributed 5.8% to the total annualized return of 7.9% over the 200-year *******. Similarly, research from the London Business School examined global returns from 1900 to 2005. The study found that across 17 countries, the average real return was approximately 5%, with an average dividend yield of 4.5% during that timeframe. These findings reinforce the appeal of long-term investment strategies focused on value and income generation.
The Russell Index’s gains this year have been largely driven by a small group of mega-cap stocks, particularly the tech-heavy “Magnificent Seven.” These companies account for over 25% of the index and were responsible for nearly 40% of its 21% total return in the first three quarters of 2024. However, in recent months, market leadership has shifted, with value-oriented stocks gaining momentum. In the third quarter, the Russell Value Index climbed 9.4%, significantly outpacing the 3.2% gain of the Russell Growth Index, as reported by BlackRock.
The report further mentioned that several factors may have influenced this shift toward value stocks. Strong job growth, declining inflation, and the Federal Reserve’s decision to begin cutting interest rates have boosted investor confidence, allowing the rally to extend beyond the largest mega-cap stocks. In addition, value-driven sectors that are sensitive to interest rates—such as financials, utilities, and real estate investment trusts (REITs)—tend to benefit from a lower rate environment.
Though value outperformed growth in the third quarter of 2024, recent market trends have overwhelmingly favored growth and technology stocks, leading to a decline in the representation of value stocks within US large-cap indexes. As of September 30, 2024, growth stocks comprised 32% of the Russell index, whereas value stocks accounted for only 8%, resulting in a notable 24% gap. This stands in contrast to the past 25 years, during which the average difference in market weight between growth and value stocks within the index was 7.4%.
Story Continues
This shift has inadvertently left many portfolios lacking diversification and underexposed to value stocks, potentially causing investors to miss out on gains as value stocks recover. To address this imbalance, investors may benefit from deliberately increasing their allocation to value stocks by complementing core US equity index funds with a dedicated value-focused investment strategy.
Dividend stocks have underperformed recently, largely due to the market’s strong focus on AI-related stocks. As a result, their valuations have declined in recent months. When it comes to dividend investing, high yields often create uncertainty among investors, making it challenging to determine whether these stocks are worthwhile investments. Investors often gravitate toward stocks with high dividend yields, assuming that a higher yield automatically translates to better returns. However, a study by Wellington Management challenged this assumption, revealing that while stocks with the highest dividend payouts and yields performed well over time, they did not necessarily outperform those with moderately high, yet not extreme, dividend yields. This finding suggests that excessively high yields do not always lead to the best results, emphasizing the need for a more balanced approach rather than focusing solely on yield size. Analysts generally consider dividend yields in the range of 3% to 6% to be healthy.
To compile this list, we filtered for dividend stocks with a forward P/E ratio below 15 and dividend yields exceeding 5% as of February 16. From that group, we chose companies with a proven track record of consistently paying dividends to their shareholders. The ranking of these stocks is based on their forward P/E ratios, arranged from the highest to the lowest.
At Insider Monkey, we are obsessed with hedge funds. Why are we interested in the stocks that hedge funds pile into? The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. This marked the company’s 23rd consecutive year of dividend growth, which makes UPS one of the best dividend stocks on our list. The stock supports a dividend yield of 5.64%, as of February 16. In addition to its dividend growth, the company is a preferred choice for income investors because of its strong cash position. In fiscal year 2024, the company reported $10.1 billion in operating cash flow, while free cash flow amounted to $6.3 billion. It also returned $5.9 billion to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases.
Overall, UPS ranks 10th on our list of low PE high dividend stocks to buy now. While we acknowledge the potential for UPS as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and doing so within a shorter time frame. DOGE-affiliated employee has accessed IRS system with sensitive taxpayer information

An Internal Revenue Service employee who is affiliated with the Department of Government Efficiency has accessed an IRS system that houses sensitive taxpayer information, according to an administration official.
The employee was granted access to the Integrated Data Retrieval System, which allows IRS employees to access taxpayer accounts.
The IDRS allows employees to have “instantaneous visual access to certain taxpayer accounts,” according to the IRS website. The system can be used for “researching account information and requesting returns” and “automatically generating notices, collection documents and other outputs.”
IDRS users “are authorized to access only those accounts required to accomplish their official duties,” according to the IRS website.
The person with access to the IDRS is an IRS employee who started during the second Trump administration and is affiliated with DOGE, the official confirmed. The official said that the employee was carrying out the “DOGE mission” and acting “legally and with the appropriate security clearances.”
“Waste, fraud, and abuse have been deeply entrenched in our broken system for far too long,” said White House spokesperson Harrison Fields when asked about the employee’s access to the sensitive system. “It takes direct access to the system to identify and fix it.”
“DOGE will continue to shine a light on the fraud they uncover as the American people deserve to know what their government has been spending their hard earned tax dollars on,” Fields added.
The IRS did not immediately responded to requests for comment Sunday evening.
The move, first reported by The Washington Post, marks an expansion of DOGE’s efforts to access sensitive information held by the federal government.
DOGE, spearheaded by Elon Musk, has zeroed in on several government agencies and departments in an effort to cut what the administration paints as wasteful spending. DOGE has aimed to cut members of the federal workforce.
NBC News has previously reported that DOGE has accessed the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s payment system, which stores sensitive information like Social Security numbers. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem also said earlier this month that President Donald Trump authorized Musk to access FEMA disaster data.
The group has also taken aim at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the U.S. Agency for International Development.
