Europe wants a say in Ukraine peace plan Europe wants a say in Ukraine peace plan Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (L) talks with High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas at the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affair)in Paris, on Feb. 12, 2025. Christophe Petit Tesson | Afp | Getty Images As the U.S. took a break (from wild overhauls in government policies and its bureaucracy), across the Atlantic, Europe was springing into action to carve a place for the continent in this new world order. On Monday, European leaders hastily assembled in Paris to discuss plans for peace in Ukraine after they were left out of U.S.-led talks, due to begin Tuesday, between Washington and Moscow on the near three-years Russia-Ukraine war. The gathering of European heads comes just a day after the conclusion of the Munich Security Conference, which ran Feb. 14 to Feb. 16. At the defense summit, European Union President Ursula von der Leyen gave member states the green light to ramp up spending on defense, amid NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte saying Europe needs to do more if it wants to be heard by the U.S. Investors, however, clearly got the message about higher defense spending. Shares of Europe defense companies jumped on Monday, pushing Europe’s regional Stoxx 600 index to another record high — even as concerns mount that the continent may not be involved in the highest-level negotiations. What you need to know today Emergency meeting by EuropeEuropean leaders gathered Monday in Paris for an emergency summit, hastily assembled by French President Emmanuel Macron after it appeared that Europe would be left out of the negotiating table in U.S.-led Russia-Ukraine peace talks. Washington and Moscow are set to meet this week in Saudi Arabia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, said Monday that “Ukraine will not take part. Ukraine did not know anything about it.” European defense stocks jumpOn Monday, the Stoxx Europe Aerospace & Defense index hit a record and shares of Europe defense companies, such as Renk Group and Saab, jumped. They were juiced by European Union President Ursula von der Leyen saying at the Munich Security Conference that member states will be allowed to increase their spending on defense and security without breaching the bloc’s rules on budget deficit spending. Another high for the Stoxx 600U.S. markets were closed Monday for the Presidents’ Day break. The pan-European Stoxx 600 index rose 0.54%, regaining lost ground from Friday to close at another record high of 555.42 points. U.K. and euro area bond yields were broadly higher as traders weighed the potential for higher national defense spending following the Munich Security Conference. Trump-related terms in earnings callsU.S. companies are fielding growing questions on how U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies on international trade, immigration and diversity will affect business. A CNBC analysis shows words related to those issues are increasingly popping up on the earnings calls of S&P 500-listed companies. What’s more, this charge forward isn’t led by tech this time, signaling a broadening rally, as CNBC’s Bob Pisani notes. Amid this advance, there are some stocks that may be overextended to the upside, making them prime targets for investors to short, according to Wolfe Research. And finally… Tech bosses largely agree the risk DeepSeek poses to OpenAI remains limited for now. Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images ‘Game on’: Tech execs say DeepSeek ramps up China-U.S. competition but won’t hurt OpenAI In a series of interviews at France’s Artificial Intelligence Action Summit, leaders of several major tech companies told CNBC that the emergence of DeepSeek demonstrates that China can’t be counted out as a serious player when it comes to AI innovation. “Imagine if there were only two countries in the world that could build electricity at scale. That’s sort of how you have to think about it,” Chris Lehane, chief global affairs officer at OpenAI, told CNBC. Still, tech bosses largely agreed that even though DeepSeek’s breakthrough shows China being further along in the global AI race than previously thought, the threat it poses to OpenAI remains limited for now. “I think the short answer everyone should take is: game on — but large models still really matter,” Reid Hoffman, a co-founder of LinkedIn and partner at the venture capital firm Greylock Partners, told CNBC. Adam Simpson predicts encouraging start to the season for West Coast Eagles with early home wins Adam Simpson predicts encouraging start to the season for West Coast Eagles with early home wins Adam Simpson believes West Coast will give their home fans plenty to cheer about early in the season, predicting the Eagles will win their first two games against travelling opponents at Optus Stadium. The blue-and-gold army have watched just seven wins in 36 matches at their home venue across the past three seasons, leading to Simpson’s exit in the back half of last year. But the ex-coach said he was backing the Eagles to notch a win in their season opener for the first time since 2021 when Gold Coast make the trip west on March 16, and back it up with a round six victory over Essendon. “Their list is more evolved than (Richmond and North Melbourne), but they’re working through a new coach,” Simpson said on SEN while plotting out early-season predictions. “I’ve got them 16th… I’ve got them 2-4 (after six rounds). “I think they beat the Bombers and they win round one.” West Coast have a western derby date with Fremantle in round three in between road clashes against Brisbane, GWS and Carlton (in Adelaide for Gather Round) in the opening six weeks. Simpson boldly predicted a bright start for North Melbourne with a 3-3 record through six rounds – a number that would match their win total for the entirety of each of their past two seasons. It comes as the former coach recalled a humorous memory from his first pre-season match at the helm amid Eagles successor Andrew McQualter’s opening pre-season win on Monday. “My first game, years ago, was against Freo in a pre-season game. I was that amped up… it was like it was grand final day,” Simpson said. Camera IconAdam Simpson coaching West Coast in the 2014 pre-season. The New York Restaurant Where Al Capone Received His Infamous Scar The New York Restaurant Where Al Capone Received His Infamous Scar Perhaps the most famous (or infamous) gangster that the United States has ever seen, Al Capone has enough elusive lore surrounding him to fill several volumes — even if you were to completely ignore those three conspicuous scars on his left cheek. Certainly, Capone himself would have liked them not to be noticed — he supposedly disdained his “Scarface” nickname, even going so far as to invent a story of acquiring said scars while fighting in France during World War I. However, the apparently true account of the incident that left a real mark on the crime boss brings us a lot closer to home, to a sleazy cabaret and nightclub in Coney Island. In the 1910s, this Brooklyn neighborhood was home to the Harvard Inn, where a young Capone briefly worked as a bouncer. According to some accounts, Capone drew the ire of a man named Frank Galluccio after Capone made an off-color toward a woman who was with Gallucio. Not taking this perceived insult lightly, Galluccio slashed at Capone with a knife, severely wounding and forever scarring the future mobster. While this may not be the fanciest of the locales frequented by Capone, it certainly proved to be a pivotal one. Read more: 13 Fascinating Foods Eaten During The Great Depression What Became Of The Harvard Inn? Poster of notorious New York gangsters – Bettmann/Getty Images Unlike some of Al Capone’s other famous haunts (such as Route 66’s Luna Cafe restaurant, which would become one of his favorites), little else is known about the Harvard Inn –- perhaps due in part to the mythos surrounding the origins of Capone’s scars taking center stage. Besides its location on 14 Seaside Walk in Coney Island (across from the more famous Stauch’s restaurant), most of the remaining information surrounding the Harvard Inn relates to either Capone himself or the mobster who initially hired him, Frankie Yale. Unfortunately, there’s nothing left of the Harvard Inn these days, and there hasn’t been for over 100 years. In January of 1925, the building that housed the Harvard Inn was consumed by fire. While firefighters were able to contain the blaze to that area, the establishment was sadly lost to the flames. So, if you’re looking to trace the steps of Capone’s rise to infamy, you’ll have to settle for one of his favorite meals instead of visiting the place where the legend of Scarface was born. Major airline shake-up to get green light, ACCC plans to approve Virgin-Qatar deal Major airline shake-up to get green light, ACCC plans to approve Virgin-Qatar deal The competition and consumer watchdog is happy with a major partnership deal between Virgin Australia and Qatar Airlines that will shake up *********** travel to and from Europe, the Middle East and Africa. On Tuesday, the *********** Competition and Consumer Commission announced it proposed to grant the two airlines permission “to engage in cooperative conduct under an integrated alliance for five years”. Under the deal, Virgin Australia will lease Qatar Airways’ aircraft and crew for new routes – 28 new weekly return flights between Doha and Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Camera IconThe airlines were allowed to start selling tickets as part of the deal from November. Supplied Credit: Supplied The competition watchdog allowed the two airlines to start advertising and selling the new flights in November and since has ruled the partnership would be beneficial for consumers. “We consider that the proposed cooperative conduct would likely result in several public benefits, including providing enhanced products and services for air travellers that would include increased choice of international flights with additional connectivity, convenience and loyalty program benefits for consumers,” ACCC commissioner Anna Brakey said on Tuesday. Virgin Australia only flies international routes to Indonesia, Fiji and Vanuatu since the airline went insolvent in the early days of the pandemic. US private investment firm Bain Capital brought Virgin Australia for $3.5bn only a few months later. The Virgin-Qatar deal is subject to final regulatory approvals by the ACCC and other government bodies. The ACCC will now ask for feedback on this draft determination before it makes a final decision. Southwest Airlines to cut 15% of corporate jobs as part of cost-saving plan Southwest Airlines to cut 15% of corporate jobs as part of cost-saving plan (Reuters) – Southwest Airlines said on Monday it would cut about 15% of corporate jobs, or about 1,750 roles, as the U.S. budget carrier looks to reduce costs and streamline its organizational structure. The reduction also includes leadership positions, Southwest said, adding it would eliminate 11 senior leadership roles – which represents 15% of the company’s senior management committee. “This decision is unprecedented in our 53-year history … We are at a pivotal moment as we transform Southwest Airlines into a leaner, faster, and more agile organization,” said CEO Bob Jordan. The layoffs, which the company expects to complete substantially by the end of the second quarter, are estimated to net $210 million in savings this year and full-year savings of $300 million in 2026. The savings exclude an expected one-time charge in the first quarter of 2025 in the range of $60 million to $80 million, Southwest added. The job cuts are part of Southwest’s previously announced plan to shore up sagging profits and improve its balance sheet. The company in September announced a three-year business plan including partnerships, vacation packages and aircraft *****-leasebacks. The Dallas-based carrier last week named industry veteran Tom Doxey as its new chief financial officer, replacing Tammy Romo, who announced plans to retire in January. Southwest last month reported fourth-quarter profits that surpassed Wall Street estimates, on the back of improved airfares and strong holiday travel demand. Southwest’s shares have fallen about 10% so far this year, while peers Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have climbed more than 7%. Matildas vice-captain Ellie Carpenter responds to captain Sam Kerr’s not guilty verdict in a London court Matildas vice-captain Ellie Carpenter responds to captain Sam Kerr’s not guilty verdict in a London court Matildas vice-captain Ellie Carpenter says being thrust into the spotlight after the mammoth success of the 2023 FIFA World Cup has created “change” in the lives of all players as she threw her support the way of captain Sam Kerr amid a “challenging time”. Carpenter and a Matildas squad littered with new faces are in the US preparing for a maiden campaign in the four-team SheBelieves Cup tournament, with clashes against the hosts as well as Asian Cup rivals their immediate focus. But as the fallout continues from Kerr’s not guilty finding in a London court, and the dramatic footage of her behaviour in a police station during the trial after which she was cleared of racially aggravated harassment of a police officer, questions about her captaincy status linger. Kerr, who is on the road back to playing after suffering an ACL injury last January, could make her playing return for English club side Chelsea as soon as next month before a possible Matildas return in two matches against Korea in Australia in April. But Carpenter, asked on Tuesday whether she’d been in contact with Kerr, kept her response brief. “I obviously hope she’s OK and her wellbeing … it’s obviously been a very challenging time for her,” she said. “Secondly, we hope her rehab journey with her knee is going well and we all can’t wait to see her back on the pitch. “That’s such a hard and lengthy journey, I’ve been through it as well, so I really hope that she’s back on the pitch doing what she loves and that’s going to be the best thing.” Chelsea women’s coach Sonia Bompastor last week said Kerr’s acquittal and apology, made via social media, was enough and put a full stop on the incident from the powerhouse club’s perspective. Football Australia committed to continuing to support Kerr and to “reflect with Sam on learnings from this matter “ without making any call on her leadership future”. Carpenter said she and the other players were hopeful that FA would “provide us with a coach that is best fit”. Police arrest apparent leader of cultlike ‘Zizian’ group linked to multiple killings in the US Police arrest apparent leader of cultlike ‘Zizian’ group linked to multiple killings in the US BOSTON (AP) — The apparent leader of a cultlike group known as the Zizians has been arrested in Maryland along with another member of the group, Maryland State Police said Monday. Jack Lasota, 34, was arrested Sunday along with Michelle Zajko, 33, of Media, Pennsylvania. They face multiple charges including trespassing, obstructing and hindering and possession of a handgun in the vehicle. A bail hearing for the the two is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Allegany District Court. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. The Zizians have been tied to the killing of U.S. Border Patrol Agent David Maland near the ********* border in January and five other homicides in Vermont, Pennsylvania and California. Maland, 44, was killed in a Jan. 20 shootout following a traffic stop in Coventry, Vermont, a small town about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from the ********* border. Officials have offered few details of the cross-country investigation, which broke open after the Jan. 20 shooting death of Maland. Associated Press interviews and a review of court records and online postings tell the story of how a group of young, highly intelligent computer scientists, most of them in their 20s and 30s, met online, shared anarchist beliefs, and became increasingly violent. Their goals aren’t clear, but online writings span topics from radical veganism and gender identity to artificial intelligence. At the middle of it all is “Ziz,” who appears to be the leader of the strange group members who called themselves “Zizians.” She has been seen near multiple crime scenes and has connections to various suspects. LaSota published a dark and sometimes violent blog under the name Ziz and, in one section, described her theory that the two hemispheres of the brain could hold separate values and genders and “often desire to kill each other.” LaSota, who used she/her pronouns, and in her writings says she is a transgender woman, railed against perceived enemies, including so-called rationalist groups, which operate mostly online and seek to understand human cognition through reason and knowledge. Some are concerned with the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. LaSota, 34, has not responded to multiple Associated Press emails in recent weeks, and her attorney Daniel McGarrigle declined to comment when asked whether she is connected to any of the deaths. Before her weekend arrest, she missed court appearances in two states, and bench warrants have been issued for her arrest. Reached on Monday, McGarrigle would only confirm that he has represented LaSota and wouldn’t confirm her arrest or any details of the latest case. Minister made phone call before Venice pick reversal Minister made phone call before Venice pick reversal Federal Arts Minister Tony Burke contacted the chief executive of Creative Australia hours before the selection body revoked its invitation to the nation’s pick for the Venice Biennale. Western Sydney-based artist Khaled Sabsabi and curator Michael Dagostino had been selected to represent Australia, a decision announced earlier in February. That was until two of Sabsabi’s early artworks, which reference the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the US and listed terrorist group Hezbollah, were raised in parliament. Mr Burke called the head of funding body Creative Australia immediately after queries about the artist’s early works were raised in question time on Thursday. Mr Burke told the ABC’s 730 program he was shocked to hear about these artworks, and rang Creative Australia chief executive and board member Adrian Collette immediately. “I rang Adrian to find out what had happened. At that point, he had already determined that they were going to have a board meeting that night,” Mr Burke said. He denied interfering in the decision to ditch Australia’s entry. “I said to him whatever you decide, I will support you, and I will support Creative Australia. I was very clear in that.” Hours later Creative Australia announced its board had decided unanimously to revoke the selection. It’s led to a spate of resignations, with artist Lindy Lee quitting the board, and senior figures within the organisation also walking away. The arts publication Memo has issued an open letter to Creative Australia calling for the reinstatement of the artistic team, that has been signed by more than 3000 people. “If Creative Australia cannot even stand by its expert-led selection for a matter of hours, abandoning its own process at the first sign of pressure, then what does that say about its commitment to artistic excellence and freedom of expression?” the letter asks. There have also been calls from the art community for the Creative Australia board to be dissolved, and for artists to boycott the 2026 Biennale. Meanwhile, Biennale organisers declined to comment on the selection of participants to represent Australia. “National Participations are autonomous in all their decisions and choices,” the La Biennale di Venezia press office said in a statement. At the 2024 Biennale, artist Archie Moore and curator Ellie Buttrose won the Golden Lion for the artwork kith and kin in 2024, in a first for Australia. Now, it may not be able to send anyone to the most prestigious event in contemporary art.
