  2. Marvel Rivals dev doesn’t have “any kind of a PvE plan” Marvel Rivals dev doesn’t have “any kind of a PvE plan” There’s been confirmation that Marvel Rivals developer NetEase Games has no plans for PvE modes in the popular hero shooter. This comes on the heels of a leak indicating the opposite. Per IGN, though, which spoke with producer Weicong Wu, the idea seems out of the dev’s scope, at least at the moment. In the end, it’s always experimenting with new game modes and this could be the silver lining in a PvE mode, but as it stands that idea is dead in the water. “For now we don’t have any kind of a PvE plan, but our development team is continuously experimenting with new game play modes. So if we found that a new specific game mode is entertaining enough, fun enough, we would of course bring it to our audience.” Wu went on to mention that the team knows people want a PvE mode, but also points out that it would fall into a “totally distinctive experience,” and as such, its dev team is working on continuing to workshop modes that work better for the game’s approach. In our Marvel Rivals review, we said: “If you’re not into multiplayer, it’s at least worth a shot because it’s free-to-play. NetEase released Marvel Rivals at just the perfect time. We will see how far they can take this very strong launch, but currently, this game is a blast! It’s a must-play for Marvel fans, shooter fans, and especially Overwatch fans.” Gabriel Stanford-Reisinger Editor-in-Chief Gabe has been a gamer since he was young, playing games like Pajama Sam, Freddi Fish, Guitar Hero, and whatever looked cool on GameFly. 3. Ron Travisano, Adman Behind Singing Cats and Joe Isuzu, Dies at 86 Ron Travisano, Adman Behind Singing Cats and Joe Isuzu, Dies at 86 In the early 1970s, the madcap advertising executives Ron Travisano and Jerry Della Femina were struggling to find a gimmick to sell an undistinguished brand of **** food. Watching interminable and unremarkable footage of cats eating, Mr. Travisano and an editor, Joe Lione, spotted one that kept opening and closing its mouth in a manner that appeared to simulate singing. In fact, the cat was choking on its food. But in an eye-of-the-beholder eureka moment, the admen were inspired to create the classic singing-cat commercial that put Meow Mix on the map. The endearing “Meow, meow, meow, meow” commercial for Ralston Purina — accompanied by the tagline “The cat food that cats ask for by name,” written by Mr. Travisano’s collaborators Neil Drossman and Bob Kuperman, who also came up with the name Meow Mix — won a Clio and other industry awards. Nearly two decades after the ad debuted, The Times described it as having “one of the best known, most readily sung commercial jingles.” (The insistent meowing, mouthed by the singer Linda November, was presumably less endearing when played repeatedly to torture terrorism suspects at the U.S. prison compound at Guantánamo Bay.) Mr. Travisano served as the vice chairman, president and creative director of Della Femina, Travisano & Partners until 1985, when he left to start his own company, with his cousin Frank DiGiacomo, to focus on directing commercials. He retired from the advertising business in 2001. Mr. Travisano died on Jan. 21 at a hospital in Livingston, N.J. He was 86. The cause was complications of a stroke, said his son Vincent. A longtime resident of Glen Ridge, N.J., Mr. Travisano was living in Cedar Grove, N.J., at his death. When he and Mr. Della Femina began their collaboration in 1967, it was the dawn of a creative revolution on Madison Avenue. Mr. Travisano was 29; Mr. Della Femina, 30. They were surrounded by other young copywriters and art directors who were unafraid to fail or have fun. Mr. Della Femina wrote that working in advertising was becoming “the most fun you can have with your clothes on.” Another series of Advertising Hall of Fame commercials that Mr. Travisano and Mr. Della Femina created were the self-parodying ads for American Isuzu Motors broadcast in the 1980s. With subtitles like “Sounds like a lie” and “He’s lying,” the ads featured a fictional pitchman called Joe Isuzu who made outlandish claims about his cars — that they cost just $9, for example, or that his Isuzu could outrace a bullet (one that he caught in his teeth). Those commercials became so recognizable that in a 1988 presidential debate Michael Dukakis could call George H.W. Bush “the Joe Isuzu of American politics” with no further explanation required. “I refuse to do ‘bite and smile’ commercials,” Mr. Travisano told The New York Times in 1989. “‘I just ate this roll — ooh! aah!’ That’s not real. Even the Joe Isuzu ads — they’re cartoons, but the lighting, the touches, the reactions are real.” He worked on a number of other notable accounts as well, including Rolls-Royce, Blue Nun wine (promoted in ads featuring Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara), WABC-TV, the New York Mets and Geritol. Over the years, Mr. Travisano’s imaginative work won Gold and Silver Lions at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and 15 of the industry’s Clio Awards for his agency. “I’m an artist, a photographer and a frustrated actor,” he told The Times in 1985, when he left the agency. “When I see all those lights and the cables on the floor I get excited.” As his cousin and new business partner, Mr. DiGiacomo, put it, the burly Mr. Travisano was “a man of extremes,” who at one point or another became infatuated with a swami and a hypnotist, and then found Jesus “in a match made in heaven.” Ronald Donato Travisano was born on May 3, 1938, in Newark, to Ben Travisano, a hairdresser who owned a beauty parlor, and Phyllis (DiGiacomo) Travisano, who ran a real estate agency. He grew up in Kearny, N.J., where he met his future wife, Frances Bongiovanni, whom he married in 1961. She died in 2011. In addition to his son Vincent, he is survived by his sons Ronald and Philip; his daughter, Laura Hurley; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. After attending Carteret Prep School, in West Orange, N.J., he graduated in 1960 from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn with a bachelor’s degree in advertising design. (Later, he returned to teach at Pratt and also taught at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan.) He worked his way up from the mail room at Young & Rubicam, was hired as an art director at McCann-Marschalk and then became a supervisor at two other agencies, Delehanty Kurnit & Geller and Ted Bates. When Mr. Travisano and Mr. Della Femina became partners, their first account was for Squire, a company that made hairpieces. Their pitch was headlined: “Are you still combing your memories?” “There were things that I might say to Ron and he’ll say, ‘Are you crazy? You can’t say that,’” Mr. Della Femina recalled in his 1970 memoir, “From Those Wonderful Folks Who Brought You Pearl Harbor.” (The title was a slogan he facetiously suggested for Panasonic.) “He’ll then say, ‘But what if we did this?’ And he’ll come up with something that’s completely outlandish,” but sparks some viable alternative. Mr. Travisano raised $80,000 to finance the new agency, but it opened inauspiciously, with four partners who were making less, collectively, than their $125-a-week receptionist, Mr. Della Femina recalled in his eulogy for Mr. Travisano. Mr. Della Femina suggested that they take their last few thousand dollars and throw an extravagant Christmas party at L’Etoile to create the illusion of success. “At one point, I reached over to take an hors d’oeuvre a waiter was carrying on a huge tray,” Mr. Della Femina said. “Ron came over and whispered into my ear: ‘Don’t eat that. We may need it for lunch tomorrow.’” The party succeeded in impressing potential clients, and the agency prospered. By the time Mr. Travisano sold his shares in 1985, it had some 300 employees and more than $350 million in annual billings. On the subject of eating, Mr. Della Femina had one more point to make. In a recent interview, he added a coda to the story of Mr. Travisano’s epiphany about the footage that inspired the Meow Mix commercial. The cat that was choking, he noted, survived. 5. Wall collapse at Wilmington parking garage causes ‘significant’ damage to 4 buildings Wall collapse at Wilmington parking garage causes ‘significant’ damage to 4 buildings A cinderblock wall that comprised one side of a multi-story parking garage in Wilmington collapsed Monday morning, causing “significant damage” to at least four nearby buildings, the Wilmington Fire Department confirmed. As of 1 p.m., there were no reported injuries. However, New Castle County’s urban search and rescue team was conducting a “thorough search” of the buildings to ensure no one was trapped inside, said fire department spokesperson and Battalion Chief Robert Pryor. The collapse, which happened a little before noon at the city’s HyPark Garage, caused about three stories worth of cinderblock to rain down onto the rear of several buildings in the 100 block of W. 9th St, Pryor said. The garage runs in the 900 block between N. Orange and N. Shipley streets. Firefighters peer into a building near the 900 block of N. Shipley St. after about three stories worth of cinderblock fell off the back of parking garage (right). While the collapse started a small fire on the roof of one of the buildings due to a broken gas line on a heater, firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, Pryor said. As the search of the buildings continues, officials with Wilmington’s Department of Licenses and Inspections are also working to perform a structural assessment. It will take some time before the assessment is complete. Pryor said “multiple” streets and sidewalks are closed in the area. That included N. Orange Street at Burton Place and N. Shipley Street at 10th Street. As of about 1:30 p.m., firefighters were located at 9th and Orange streets with the department’s ladder truck. They could be seen entering the buildings in the 100 block of 9th St. that had the wall collapse on them. Around the corner on N. Shipley Street, firefighters could also be seen on ladders, where they were peering into the backs of those buildings. Most buildings and businesses appeared to be vacant, with “for *****” signs posted in their windows despite business names still advertised on their awnings. One of the closed businesses was Solid Gold Jewelers, whose owner was the victim of a brutal robbery by Calvin Ushery in September 2022. Ushery, who was later sentenced for the crime, beat the then-68-year-old with a hammer before robbing the store. First responders are on scene at a wall collapses that occurred at a parking garage in the 900 block between N. Shipley and N. Orange streets. Several people who were in the parking garage could be seen looking down on the firefighters Monday afternoon, watching them as they worked. “Fortunately,” Pryor said, “it’s a holiday, so there’s not as much traffic down here.” READ: Police ID man killed in wrong-way, head-on ****** near Odessa Pryor said the cause of the collapse will be determined by an engineer with the city’s license and inspections department. By about 2:15 p.m., some Wilmington fire trucks could be seen leaving the area. Several chunks of concrete remained on the sidewalk in the 900 block of N. Orange St., though there appeared to be no damage to the cars parked across the street. This is a developing story. Return to delawareonline.com for updates. Got a story tip or idea? 7. Poetry centre and old Ikea get share of £67m culture fund Poetry centre and old Ikea get share of £67m culture fund Plans to convert a Leeds church into a National Poetry Centre and a former Ikea in Coventry into a visitor attraction are among cultural projects that have had government funding worth a total of £67m confirmed. However, six more locations that had been promised a further £30m will now not receive that money. Almost £100m was originally announced for “Levelling Up” culture projects in April 2024, which was then in the balance after the general election. The incoming government said it was “minded to withdraw” all of the money because of “the need to make savings”, but has now chosen 10 places to keep their funding. They include the National Poetry Centre, which is the brainchild of Poet Laureate Simon Armitage. It will receive £5m towards creating a 250-seat performance theatre, bookshop, library, cafe, recording facilities and rehearsal spaces in Trinity St David’s Church. “Thanks to this excellent news, the National Poetry Centre will become a reality,” Armitage said. “Poetry is enjoying a surge of popularity, offering people from every walk of life an accessible and memorable means of expression. Leeds, at the heart of Britain and the crossroads of the country, is the perfect place for a national and international headquarters.” The other successful projects are: National Railway Museum in York – £15m to build a new Central Hall, with a new entrance, gallery, shop, cafe and other facilitiesBritish Library North in Leeds – £10m to start converting a derelict Grade 1 building into an offshoot of the British LibraryInternational Slavery Museum and Maritime Museum in Liverpool – £10m “to expand and maintain the museums”Venue Cymru in Llandudno – £10m to upgrade the arts centre and “create a modern and innovative cultural hub”City Centre Cultural Gateway in Coventry – £5m to convert the old Ikea into “a new cultural and visitor attraction”Newport Transporter Bridge, Wales – £5m for vital repair and maintenance worksV&A Dundee – £2.6m to “create an improved destination and visitor experience” at the venue, which opened in 2018Scala arts venue in Worcester – £2.3m for three projects including office, studio and exhibition spaces and a youth hubBelfast’s Shore Road Skills Centre – £2.2m to turn Crusaders FC’s South Stand into “a unique state of the art community education, event and skills centre” Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said: “This support will empower our cultural organisations to continue playing an essential role in developing skills, talent and high-quality careers in every corner of the ***.” The government said it had prioritised projects from the original list that were the most advanced, would make significant cultural impact, and would maximise economic growth. However, several areas that had been earmarked to receive £5m each will miss out. They are: Maldon in Essex, Redditch in Worcestershire, High Peak and Erewash in Derbyshire, Mendip in Somerset, and North Northamptonshire. Jason Smithers, leader of North Northamptonshire Council, said he was “clearly disappointed” by the withdrawal of funding that would have paid for “an exciting and impactful programme of projects which would have helped deliver real economic benefits”. Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts, Somerset Council’s executive lead member for communities, housing and culture, said it was “very disappointing news indeed for our communities and the creative industries” in the county. She added: “It appears that once again it’s the rural communities that miss out whilst the cities receive the money. People have invested their time, and placed their hope, into getting this government funding, and I really feel for them today.” A spokesperson for the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government said: “This government inherited unfunded commitments to these projects, along with many others, but by making difficult choices we have managed to re-prioritise some funding within extremely tight budgets. “We have carefully considered the responses to our consultation and chosen projects at an advanced stage that will have the greatest impact on local people and economic growth – this government’s number one mission.” Source link #Poetry #centre #Ikea #share #67m #culture #fund Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Qatar Open: Draper and Alcaraz reach last 16 in Doha Qatar Open: Draper and Alcaraz reach last 16 in Doha Jack Draper has progressed to the second round of the Qatar Open with a strong performance in a 6-2 7-6 (7-4) victory against Alexei Popyrin. The eighth seed – playing for the first time since retiring injured against Carlos Alcaraz at the *********** Open in January – needed only 27 minutes to take the first set in Dubai with Popyrin unable to cope with the Briton’s first serves. The second set was far less straightforward for Draper as Popyrin saved a break point to keep with serve. Draper, making his debut in Doha, won the tie-break to set up a last-16 meeting with *********** qualifier Christopher O’Connell. Earlier on Monday top seed Carlos Alcaraz progressed to the second round with a 6-4 6-4 victory against Marin Cilic. Former US Open champion Cilic – making his first appearance since November because of a knee-injury setback – spurned three break points late in the second set that would have put him 5-3 up. Alcaraz then broke serve and secured a place in the last 16, where he will face either Zhang Zhizhen or Luca Nardi. 12. Modder crams LLM onto Pi Zero-powered USB stick, but it isn’t fast enough to be practical Modder crams LLM onto Pi Zero-powered USB stick, but it isn’t fast enough to be practical Local LLM usage is on the rise, and with many setting up PCs or systems to run them, the idea of having an LLM run on a server somewhere in the cloud is quickly becoming outmoded. Binh Pham experimented with a Raspberry Pi Zero, effectively turning the device into a small USB drive that can run an LLM locally with no extras needed. The project was largely facilitated thanks to llama.cpp and llamafile, a combination of an instruction set and a series of packages designed to offer a lightweight chatbot experience offline. But, due to the Pi Zero being eight years old, it wasn’t as simple as packing llama.cpp onto the Pi Zero and getting it to run. Firstly, Pham mounted the device onto a USB interface and 3D printed a shell for the device itself. With all of that addressed, the project gathered more complexity due to the Pi Zero W’s 512MB RAM storage limitation. After building llama.cpp onto the device, it failed to compile, and no one else had dared to build llama.cpp onto a Pi Zero, or Pi One. The root of the issues came down to the Pi Zero’s CPU, which runs on ARMv6. To get around this, he had to knuckle down and convert llama.cpp’s ARMv8 instruction set and remove any notations or optimizations based on modern hardware. World’s First USB Stick with Local LLM – AI in Your Pocket! – YouTube Watch On After editing the llama.cpp source code to get things running on the Pi Zero, he needed to get the software side of the stick working. Then, his attention turned toward getting the software experience as seamless as possible. The LLM itself is built around submitting text files to the LLM, which serves as the main prompt. So, Pham built his implementation that generates a story based on the text prompt and spits it back out as a fully populated file with generated outputs. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. With token limits set to 64, he got several benchmarks in place with several models, ranging from 15M to 136M. The Tiny15M model achieved 223ms-per-token speeds, while the two larger Lamini-T5-Flan-77M model achieved a longer 2.5s-per-token speed, and the SmolLM2-136M model achieved 2.2s-per-token. The token speeds really mean that it will be too slow to use in many practical applications. While it’s an interesting project, using older, lightweight hardware to run a local LLM might not offer much practical use. Instead, you might want to use a much more complex model, like running Deepseek on a Raspberry Pi 5. 14. Eight ways to lose weight fast – and safely Eight ways to lose weight fast – and safely Whether it’s to slim down for a holiday or a special occasion, or because our health is at risk, the idea of following NHS advice to go slowly when we start a diet – around 1-2lb (0.5-1kg) a week – just isn’t appealing. In fact, if you enter “how to lose weight fast” into a Google search, there are over one billion results. When it comes to weight loss, we just aren’t prepared to play the long game. “Currently, health professionals encourage people to lose weight by making gradual diet changes. However, many people have already done this with little success,” explains Dr Adrian Brown, a registered dietitian and the chair of the British Dietetic Association’s Obesity Specialist Group. “In my clinics, I find at times that the slow, steady approach doesn’t motivate clients to keep going, or address the many health problems linked to excess body weight.” The issue of motivation is important. Evidence shows that it’s adherence to a diet, rather than the diet itself, that influences how successful we are in losing weight and keeping it off. “My clients are far more motivated to stick with a plan when they lose a lot of weight quickly,” confirms Dr Brown. “This results in ******* weight losses overall, and therefore potentially ******* health benefits.” The only way to lose body **** is to create an energy (calorie) deficit or shortfall. Put simply, we need to consume fewer calories from food and drink than we expend or use up. When this is achieved, stored **** in our body is used to meet energy needs, and the scales register weight loss. The greater the energy restriction, the faster the weight comes off, but the more challenging it becomes to get all the nutrients needed for good health. “Anything under 1,200 calories won’t be nutritionally balanced and risks being low in protein, vitamins and minerals,” confirms Dr Brown. In the first instance, though, there are some easy wins for significantly reducing calories without compromising nutrition… Eight tips to lose weight quickly and safely – with minimum effort Here are eight tips to help ditch the weight quickly and safely: 1. Ditch the **** **** contains double the calories of protein or carbohydrates, so eating fewer high-**** foods can dramatically slash energy intake. Focus on reducing or eliminating high-**** foods that are also high in sugar or salt and contain few nutrients, such as biscuits, cake, chocolate and crisps, and choose lower-**** versions of nutrient-rich foods like milk and meat. 2. Put protein on the menu Protein is filling, allowing us to reduce portion size, and therefore calories, without feeling hungry. For example, one study found a breakfast of eggs and toast meant adults living with obesity consumed 182 fewer calories at lunchtime and felt less hungry than after a breakfast of cereal with milk and juice. Choose lean, protein-rich foods such as fish, poultry, lean meat, eggs, skimmed milk, tofu, and pulses such as chickpeas, kidney beans and lentils. 3. Cut carbs in half Carbohydrates are important in a balanced diet, but we often have supersized servings or add extra calories to them, such as butter on bread. Serve half the usual amount of rice or pasta, or substitute with vegetables, such as courgetti instead of spaghetti, cauliflower rice instead of basmati, and aubergine slices rather than lasagne sheets. 4. Go big on fibre Fibre-rich foods – such as vegetables, fruit, pulses, porridge and wholegrain bread, pasta, and rice – are filling so we feel satisfied with smaller portions, plus they help delay hunger. This is important because when we lose weight, our body tries to regulate itself back to its original weight – an evolutionary mechanism that protects our body in times of famine – by increasing levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin, while reducing levels of appetite-suppressing hormones such as GLP-1 and PYY. Fibre will help keep you feeling fuller for longer. 5. Go sugar-free Sugar contains calories but no other nutrients, so avoiding excess amounts can be an easy weight-loss win. Skip sugar in hot drinks and on cereal, choose sugar-free soft drinks and replace sugary desserts or snacks with fruit. To satisfy a sweet tooth, thread berries onto skewers and dip into ****-free Greek yogurt with a sprinkle of ginger or cinnamon. 6. Stay hydrated Dehydration can cause headaches, dizziness, tiredness, poor concentration and leave us reaching for sugary snacks to boost energy when we really need fluid. The amount needed depends on our size, age, activity levels and climate, so advice to drink six to eight glasses of fluid a day is a rough guide. All liquids, except alcohol, count towards our needs. This includes tea, coffee, milk and soft drinks, but it’s best to choose calorie-free beverages for weight loss. Water is the perfect choice. 7. Put plants first Eating plants in place of meat or dairy products can aid fast weight loss by significantly reducing calories and adding filling fibre. For example, replace lamb in a curry with chickpeas, swap cheese in an omelette for tomatoes, and serve a smaller steak with grilled mushrooms. 8. Lose the booze Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram – almost as much as **** (9 calories per gram) – so when we cut booze, we cut calories. A couple of glasses of wine contains 320 calories. Swap for calorie-free drinks each night and that’s 3lb gone in a month. What’s the best exercise to lose weight fast? Exercise has many vital functions for keeping us healthy, but weight loss isn’t necessarily one of them. “Exercise on its own isn’t a great strategy for losing weight and certainly doesn’t give rapid results. It’s far easier to create an energy deficit or shortfall by reducing calories in our diet than it is to increase the amount of calories we burn through exercise,” says Dr James King, a senior lecturer in exercise physiology at Loughborough University. That’s not to say exercise doesn’t have an important role in weight management. Dr King explain more here: Exercise increases the amount of calories we burn. “Studies confirm that people who are physically active after losing weight are more likely to keep it off because exercise increases daily energy expenditure – the amount of calories used up – and this compensates for increases in appetite and energy [calorie] intake that typically occur after dieting.” He cites research from Denmark, which found that adults who lost weight through diet – an average of 13kg (29lb) over eight weeks – maintained this loss at one year with 120 minutes of weekly exercise. Those who did no planned exercise regained almost half their weight. Exercise has a role in maintaining muscle. “Many people worry about the loss of lean mass or muscle that occurs with rapid weight loss, but proportionally we still lose far more **** than muscle when we lose weight quickly, and that’s better for health.” However, including exercise in a weight-loss plan – particularly resistance training – can reduce the loss of muscle. “Exercise can preserve up to half of the muscle we would expect to lose with rapid weight loss, especially if it’s combined with adequate protein.” Maintaining muscle is certainly important, but gaining more through strength training isn’t the solution for rapid weight loss. “We often hear that building more muscle boosts the metabolism so we burn more energy at rest, but the effect is typically small. At rest, each kilo of muscle burns just 13 calories a day,” explains Dr King. So what is the best exercise to burn calories? Dr King says it’s whatever works for the individual. “Energy expenditure is based on the intensity and duration of exercise, so the harder the activity and the longer it’s done, the greater the number of calories burnt.” He advises that while high-intensity training (HIIT) workouts are often promoted for weight loss, his research shows this is unlikely to work. “Although HIIT is intense, the overall time spent exercising is low, so overall you don’t burn many calories,” he says, adding that a brisk 30-minute walk is likely to burn more calories for most people than five 30-second bursts of extreme exercise. How long does it take to burn calories? This chart shows how long it could take to burn off calories by walking: Who should try to lose weight fast? While many of us may want to lose weight in a hurry to look good for a particular event, Dr Brown believes rapid weight loss should be prioritised to improve health rather than appearance. He suggests that rapid, clinically significant weight loss in people living with obesity can help improve many health conditions, including: “National guidelines may also recommend losing significant weight more rapidly in preparation for fertility treatment or before surgery,” Brown adds. Still, we should dismiss dieting for a deadline. Currently, 64 per cent of people in England are overweight or obese, and rapid weight loss due to a dramatic reduction in calories – even if the motivation is to look good or feel more confident – may improve health, especially in anyone with high blood pressure, high cholesterol or Type 2 diabetes. This is what research shows about weight loss and Type 2 diabetes: Losing large amounts of weight as quickly as possible can put Type 2 diabetes into remission. In a study known as the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial, adults with a BMI of at least 27 and Type 2 diabetes followed an 850 calorie daily diet for several months, followed by support to reintroduce healthy food and maintain their weight loss. After a year, 46 per cent of participants had put their diabetes into remission. Rapid weight loss can stop people developing Type 2 diabetes in the first place. In a study of adults who live with prediabetes and have a BMI of 25 or higher, an 810 calorie daily diet for eight weeks resulted in an average weight loss of 11kg (24lb), and more than a third saw their blood glucose levels return to the normal range. Even more impressive was that three years later, only 3 per cent had developed Type 2 diabetes. But, is it dangerous to lose weight fast? According to Dr Brown, it depends how you achieve it. “Trying to lose weight rapidly by skipping meals, starving yourself, or following fad or extreme diets makes it difficult to meet requirements for protein, vitamins and minerals, and this can lead to nutrient deficiencies, affecting short and long-term health,” he says. Rapid weight loss – usually defined as losing more than 2lb (1kg) a week over several weeks – can also cause side effects, such as: But these effects are typically mild and temporary. More seriously, rapid weight loss also increases the risk of gallstones, although people with a BMI over 30 already have a higher chance of developing them. Is fast weight loss bad for the heart? One area of concern has historically focused on the impact of fast weight loss on heart health. In the 1970s, more than 60 deaths were linked to heart arrhythmia in people who lost weight rapidly after following a very low energy diet that replaced all meals with products such as bars, shakes and soups. However, the cause wasn’t the speed of weight loss. It was because the products lacked good-quality protein and electrolytes. “The heart is a muscle, so if protein intake is consistently inadequate, it becomes weaker and functions less efficiently,” explains Dr Brown. “Plus, poor intake of electrolytes such as calcium, magnesium and potassium can lead to an irregular heartbeat.” Fortunately, the nutrient content of bars, soups and shakes designed to replace meals is now much more strictly regulated in order to prevent this. In fact, if nutrient requirements are met, rapid weight loss can improve heart health. Dr Brown adds: “Numerous studies show fast weight loss can lower risk factors that increase the chances of heart disease and stroke, such as high blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides.” Does losing weight fast just mean you regain it fast? The belief that weight lost rapidly is quickly regained isn’t necessarily true. Research from the University of Florida studied the impact of losing weight slowly or rapidly on weight regain in women living with obesity. After six months, the slow and rapid dieters had lost 5.1kg (11lb) and 13.5kg (30lb) respectively. After 18 months, both groups had regained a little, but compared with the start of the study, the slow and rapid groups still had overall losses of 3.7kg (8lb) and 10.9kg (24lb) respectively. The conclusion: fast dieters lost almost three times as much weight and were no more susceptible to regaining it than slow dieters. An *********** study also busts the myth that fast weight loss means regaining even more weight. Researchers found that after almost three years, both fast and slow dieters regained 70 per cent of the weight they’d lost, but still weighed less than when they started out. “These studies don’t support the theory that losing weight quickly results in faster or more dramatic weight regain over time. We know people put weight back on, but the speed at which they initially lost it seems to have little bearing. Plus, even when weight is regained, many people remain below their initial weight, which clearly benefits health,” says Dr Brown. “The evidence suggests there’s a case for encouraging people living with obesity to follow a plan that helps them lose weight rapidly when they first start their journey, and then introduce gradual changes to diet, eating habits and physical activity that can help them sustain their weight loss in the longer term.” Who should avoid fast weight loss? Rapid weight loss is unsuitable for some people, including: Those who are breastfeeding Under-18s who have higher requirement for some nutrients to support growth Those who have certain conditions like uncontrolled depression, psychiatric conditions or eating disorders “Medication for some conditions, such as high blood pressure or Type 2 diabetes, often needs adjustment when someone loses weight. Faster weight loss will mean medication may need modifying sooner. That’s why diets aimed at rapid weight loss are best done with medical support,” says Dr Brown. 17. Michael van Gerwen: Three-time world champion suffers shock defeat by Irish amateur Michael Flynn in Players Championship Michael van Gerwen: Three-time world champion suffers shock defeat by Irish amateur Michael Flynn in Players Championship Irish amateur Michael Flynn says his shock victory over three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen is a “massive moment” in his career. Flynn beat Van Gerwen 6-4 in the first round of the third Players Championship of 2025 in Rosmalen, the Netherlands. The 32-year-old, who works in social care in County Limerick in his day job, was only added to the PDC event’s entry list on Sunday morning after a number of withdrawals. It meant a three-hour dash by car from his home in the west of Ireland to Dublin airport to catch a flight to the Netherlands to ensure he reached the tournament in time. Flynn – nicknamed ‘the Flyer’ – is ranked 11th on the Challenge Tour, which is used as a reserve list for Players Championship events. “MVG wasn’t the name you want to see as your first opponent – you’d hope for an easier game,” Flynn told BBC Sport. “I knew my form was good coming into the tournament but to beat a three-time world champion is a massive moment in my career.” Flynn’s average of 92.41 in the match was lower than Van Gerwen’s 97.01 but he held his nerve at the crucial moments. Van Gerwen’s appearance at the Autotron Centre in Rosmalen was the 35-year-old Dutchman’s first in this year’s Players Championship. Flynn was beaten 6-4 by Poland’s Tytus Kanik in the next round but acknowledged his victory over Van Gerwen, who finished runner-up to Luke Littler in the 2025 PDC World Championship, will give him a huge lift. He added: “When you are playing someone like Van Gerwen you have to tune in from the get-go. It kind of opened my eyes to the professional circuit, the standard you have to be at from the off if you want to get a win. “It will give me confidence moving forward and shows me my game is there if I can continue it and take it back to the Challenge Tour.” World number 10 Chris Dobey won the overall tournament with a comfortable 8-4 victory over Dutch outsider Jelle Klaasen in the final. There are 34 Players Championship events across the year. The second part of the Rosmalen double-header will take place on Tuesday, with the competition’s finals held in Minehead from 21 to 23 November. 20. Elder Scrolls 6: Bethesda offers fans ‘once-in-a-lifetime opportunity’ via charity auction Elder Scrolls 6: Bethesda offers fans ‘once-in-a-lifetime opportunity’ via charity auction Bethesda Softworks is offering fans the “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to become an NPC in The Elder Scrolls 6. The opportunity was shared on Monday as part of a Make-A-Wish charity auction, with the winning bidder able to create their own NPC for the next Elder Scrolls game. “This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity allows you to immortalize yourself in one of the most highly anticipated video games of all time, The Elder Scrolls VI,” the auction description reads. “The Elder Scrolls series, developed by Bethesda Game Studios, is renowned for its vast open worlds, deep lore, and immersive storytelling. With this exclusive experience, you’ll work with the developers to create a custom character that will appear in the game, leaving your mark on the legendary franchise.” The public can bid for the The Elder Scrolls 6 NPC opportunity over on the Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic auction page. The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced at E3 2018 with a brief teaser trailer which confirmed it was in pre-production at Bethesda Game Studios. Bethesda game director Todd Howard has stated on a number of occasions that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be Bethesda’s next release, followed by Fallout 5. Asked if he regretted announcing Elder Scrolls 6 so long ago, series director Todd Howard told GQ in 2023: “I have asked myself that a lot. I don’t know. I probably would’ve announced it more casually.” Commenting on what he’d like to achieve with the game, he said: “It’s like… I don’t want to answer, but I want to be polite. I will say that we want it to fill that role of the ultimate fantasy-world simulator. And there are different ways to accomplish that given the time that has passed.” Source link #Elder #Scrolls #Bethesda #offers #fans #onceinalifetime #opportunity #charity #auction Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  21. Scaramucci and Kinzinger’s blunt assessment Scaramucci and Kinzinger’s blunt assessment The legal fraternity for one, look set to enjoy a field day, if Trump’s first 30 days are anything to go by. We have witnessed myriad nominations, acting appointments and Executive Orders that will excite Congress and antagonise Trump’s critics. Is there any ground for optimism that the Trump second term is not going to turn out as painfully as critics fear? To mark Trump’s first 30 days back in office, investment platform Saxo engaged with two of the sharpest observers of the US political scene in Adam Kinzinger and Anthony Scaramucci. And Saxo enabled GlobalData to sound out Trump’s former Communications Director, Scaramucci and the ex-US Republican Representative, Kinzinger, on the prospects for the second term. RBI: Will Trump 2.0 pan out as badly as some of us fear? Anthony Scaramucci: I think the thing that’s going to make Trump 2.0 not disastrous, is time. You don’t have enough time. A lot of the stuff he’s going to do is going to get blocked. Adam Kinzinger: I think he’s the direct opposite of where I and frankly most kind of traditional Republicans have stood on America’s role in the world and what our role should be with our allies. I think if you’re looking for hope that it’s not going to be a disaster or as disastrous, it’s not going to be for me. RBI: What do you make of the appointments to date? Do any of the picks look sensible appointments that can give some confidence that this will be a grown-up, responsible administration ? Anthony Scaramucci: The White House is very concerned about all these prosecutors quitting here in New York over the deal that he cut this very open wound. And so, it’s not just the picks. Bent is a good pick. I feel bad for Rubio because Rubio looks completely out of it. He doesn’t know what to say because Trump is doing things that are so antithetical to common sense. Trump says he’s about common sense and then he sends Vance to give this stupid **** speech. So, I don’t know if it’s any picks as much as it’s time. Remember, after the midterms, if he doesn’t declare martial law or end the election – something very hard to do in a country like this – I think he’s out of office and the question is who’s going to replace him? And they don’t have a personality like Trump to replace him. Adam Kinzinger: There are a few good picks. Let’s be clear. Robert C O’Brien is pretty good, right? I know Marco Rubio, and this is a guy that is now saying things and doing things that ten years ago he never would have believed me if I told him he was going to say. For instance, backing, Donald Trump, talking about the role of America and Ukraine should be less. But that’s a good pick. But I think most of his picks, they’re very clear about one thing, a political agenda. This is not an American first political agenda. It’s a nationalist Donald Trump political agenda that’s cloaked itself in conservatism and nationalism. Story Continues RBI: So how should Trump’s Republican critics and Democrat opponents plan for Trump 2.0? Anthony Scaramucci: The Democrats unfortunately don’t have a personality either that they’re willing to galvanise around. If I were the Democrats, I would team up with the former Republicans. I would go to Christie and Haley and I would create a fusion government to beat the MAGA people. The Republican party has really been taken over by Trump. It’s Republican in name only. It’s really the MAGA party. I would have Adam [Kinzinger] and I would have Haley and Christy But you see the hard left of the Democrats make it hard for them to do that. But I would tell these guys, ‘Hey man, hold your nose. Get in the boat together and start rowing.’ The same way the Brits had to during the war, these coalition governments, I think, could defeat the insanity that were faced with the MAGA people. Adam Kinzinger: I don’t have a lot of confidence in this second Trump administration. I’m hoping that I’m wrong for the sake of the country in the world, but if not, we’re just going to continue to stand up and I think we need to paint an alternative vision, remind people what actual conservatism really is, and frankly be ready for the end of the Trump administration. Lynyak advises banking clients to exercise patience Short term, in financial services the future of agencies such as the CFPB will run and run. Distinguished US attorney Joseph Lynyak has been flooded with requests for guidance from clients regarding mooted financial services legal and regulatory changes. Lynyak, a partner at Dorsey & Whitney specialising in the CFPB banking regulation, tells RBI: “The aggressive exercise of executive authority has resulted in a wave of lawsuits seeking to halt the Administration’s numerous actions and directives. During the course of litigation, in several instances plaintiffs have been successful already in obtaining partial or complete national injunctions that have halted or significantly slowed the pace of changes being implemented by the Administration. Meantime, Lynyak is telling banking clients that patience is necessary before adopting strategic and tactical plans while the legal authority of the Administration and concomitant challenges by opponents are resolved. 25. Maddow Blog | Republicans back the White House agenda — but eye key exceptions Maddow Blog | Republicans back the White House agenda — but eye key exceptions Yahoo is using AI to generate takeaways from this article. This means the info may not always match what’s in the article. Reporting mistakes helps us improve the experience.Generate Key Takeaways As Donald Trump and his White House team continue to implement a maximalist agenda, many congressional Republicans find themselves in an awkward position. On the one hand, they’re content to play the role of backup performers for the president at center stage, endorsing his agenda, ignoring his scandals, and rubber-stamping his ideas. On the other hand, they’re also elected lawmakers with constituents — many of whom have concerns about how the administration’s policies will hurt them and their communities. As NBC News reported, it’s a path many GOP officials haven’t yet figured out how to navigate. Republicans on Capitol Hill are full of praise for President Donald Trump’s flurry of executive actions and attempts to slash some federal spending, selling it as the kind of disruption that Americans voted for last fall. That is, until the pain risks hitting home for their constituents. From cuts to health and agriculture funding to fears of new tariffs negatively impacting local industries and consumers, Republican lawmakers are starting to push back against certain aspects of Trump’s plans. To be sure, they’re doing it with great caution — in part to avoid appearing like a White House critic, in part because to stay on the good side of Trump’s followers, and in part to avoid drawing the ire of the president himself. But it’s nevertheless true that several congressional Republicans are endorsing the administration’s agenda in general, while specifically looking for exceptions to the agenda as it relates to their own states and districts. One of the first key examples of the phenomenon came after the White House announced plans to slash investments in the National Institutes of Health, at which point Republican Sen. Katie Britt of Alabama — a steadfast Trump ally — raised public concerns about the impact such cuts would have on important federally funded, HIH-backed medical research conducted in her state. It quickly became apparent that the Alabaman had intraparty company. The New York Times recently highlighted the same phenomenon. Republicans in Congress have responded to President Trump’s unilateral moves to freeze federal spending, dismantle programs and fire civil servants with a collective shrug, staying mostly silent and even praising him as he circumvents the legislative branch. But in recent days, as his slash-and-burn campaign to remake the government has begun to affect their states and districts, some Republicans have tried to push back in subtle ways. They have sought carve outs and special consideration for agriculture programs, scientific research and more, even as they cheered on Mr. Trump’s overall approach. The more the White House pursues policies that do real damage in red states, the more likely it will be that congressional Republicans politely beg for exceptions to Trump’s plans.
