Matildas ‘can’t wait’ for acquitted Kerr to be back
Ellie Carpenter is reluctant to discuss Sam Kerr’s future beyond her return to full fitness as the striker’s status as *********** captain continues to cast a shadow over the Matildas set-up.
Carpenter, speaking from the US ahead of Australia’s SheBelieves Cup campaign, was the first senior Matildas player to reflect on the fact that Kerr had been found not guilty of racially aggravated harassment in the *** last week.
Kerr is not part of the Australia squad as she continues to recover from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
The striker’s club side, Chelsea, have suggested the forward may see game-time over the next month, and when she does return it will reignite questions over whether Kerr will face sanction from Football Australia (FA).
FA has yet to take any action against the striker and released a statement last week underlining its continued support for the game’s most recognisable, powerful and influential player.
But Kerr could face sanction under FA’s code of conduct and ethics, and may also earn a rebuke for failing to inform the governing body that she had been charged last year.
Carpenter, speaking ahead of Friday’s opener against Japan in Houston, was only willing to answer one question in relation to Kerr, who has not played for the national team since 2023.
“This will be my only comment regarding Sam,” Carpenter told reporters via Zoom on Tuesday (AEDT).
“I obviously hope she’s OK and her wellbeing … it’s obviously been a very challenging time for her.
“Secondly, we hope her rehab journey with her knee is going well, and we all can’t wait to see her back on the pitch.
“That’s such a hard and lengthy journey. I’ve been through it as well, so I really hope that she’s back on the pitch doing what she loves and that’s going to be the best thing.”
Kerr’s status as captain could also be a matter for the Matildas’ next permanent head coach to handle.
Steph Catley has deputised as skipper in Kerr’s absence, with Carpenter and Emily van Egmond sharing the vice-captaincy.
Tom Sermanni is again taking the reins as interim coach for this month’s tournament in the US.
It is more than six months since Tony Gustavsson quit after a disastrous Olympics campaign, and the next Australia boss will have a limited lead-in time to the 2026 Asian Cup on home soil.
“We’re leaving that up to FA, we have full trust in them that they will provide us with a coach that’s the best fit,” Carpenter said.
“As of now we have Tom as our interim for this tournament.
“I think it’s very challenging for us against three top teams, but I think it will prepare us well for the Asian Cup.
“People are still fighting for spots and squad positions as well.
“With or without our main coach, there’s still a lot to play for.”

Woman arrested on suspicion of DUI in deadly Anaheim ******
A woman has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after she was involved in a ****** that claimed the life another driver.
The ****** happened Sunday evening near the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and West Broadway in Anaheim, according to the Anaheim Police Department.
Around 10 p.m., first responders arrived on the scene of a two-vehicle collision involving a red crossover SUV and a white Volkswagen sedan.
The driver of the SUV was trapped inside the vehicle and needed rescued from firefighters on scene utilizing heavy machinery. She was eventually cut out of the wreckage and transported to a local hospital with major injuries.
She died about one hour after the ******, police said. She’s been identified only as a 56-year-old Long Beach resident.
The driver of the Volkswagen, 29-year-old Samantha Farris of Buena Park, was also transported to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.
Samantha Farris, a 29-year-old Buena Park woman, is shown in this mug shot provided by the Anaheim Police Department on Feb. 17, 2025.
Traffic detectives have determined that Farris made a left turn directly in front of the SUV, causing the fatal ******. Witnesses told police that Farris may have been drinking at a nearby business just before the ******, which led to the launch of a DUI investigation.
“There was probable cause to believe that Ms. Farris had been operating a motor vehicle in an unsafe manner while intoxicated,” Anaheim police wrote in a news release.
After being medically cleared from the hospital, Farris was booked into jail to await possible charges for driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter.
Officials said Farris was released Monday morning after posting bail.
The investigation is still ongoing, police said, and anyone with additional information is urged to contact the Anaheim Police Department at 714-765-1900 or Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS.

Dollar wobbles, Aussie just below 2-month high ahead of RBA decision
Dollar wobbles, Aussie just below 2-month high ahead of RBA decision
By Ankur Banerjee
SINGAPORE (Reuters) – The dollar wobbled near two-month lows on Tuesday as traders weighed tariff worries and the path to U.S. rate cuts, while the *********** dollar managed to stay close to its highest level in two months even as markets bet on an imminent rate cut.
The yen held on to its recent gains as strong growth data bolstered odds of the Bank of Japan raising interest rates again this year, with July seen as a live meeting.
Investor focus this week will be on Wednesday’s release of minutes of the Federal Reserve’s meeting in January to gauge how policymakers have sought to weigh the risk of a broader tariff war in the wake of President Donald Trump’s trade policies.
Data last week showed U.S. consumer prices increased by the most in nearly 1-1/2 years in January, reinforcing the Fed’s message that it was in no rush to resume cutting rates amid growing uncertainty over the economy.
“Trade policy uncertainty is at a record high …and given that the labour market is solid, there is no compelling case to cut rates imminently,” ANZ strategists said in a note.
“An extended pause during the first half of this year looks justified and will give the Fed time to assess the impact of trade measures on inflation.”
ANZ now expects the rate cuts to restart in the second half of 2025, with a further 75 bps of easing anticipated. Markets though are not as optimistic, with traders pricing in 40 bps of cuts for this year.
In Asia, the yen was steady at 151.61 per dollar in early trading. Japan’s solid October-December GDP data on Monday, coupled with recent strong inflation, have helped lift the yen. It is up nearly 4% against the dollar so far in 2025.
The dollar index, which measures the U.S. currency against six other major rivals, was 0.1% higher at 106.83 but still near the two-month low of 106.56 it touched on Friday.
The euro was steady on the day at $1.04735, while sterling last bought $1.2608 as traders braced for talks in Saudi Arabia later on Tuesday aimed at ending the Ukraine war.
The *********** dollar eased 0.17% to $0.63459 on the day, but still close to the two-month high of $0.6374 it touched on Monday ahead of the policy decision from the Reserve Bank of Australia, with markets pricing in a 25 bp rate cut. [AUD/]
Kristina Clifton, an economist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, is not expecting significant moves in the Aussie if the RBA cuts as expected though it could rise sharply if the central bank keeps rates unchanged.
“How far AUD jumps will depend on the RBA’s post‑meeting statement and press conference. If the statement suggests a cut will be delivered soon, the lift in AUD may be smaller. But if the statement is non‑committal about a cut, AUD could lift by more than 1%.”
Story Continues
The New Zealand dollar fell 0.3% to $0.57195 ahead of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand meeting on Wednesday, where the central bank is widely expected to cut rates by 50 bps.

Royals owner John Sherman gives update on new stadium
Royals owner John Sherman gives update on new stadium
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — New stadium talks for the Kansas City Royals could be ramping up once again.
Royals owner John Sherman spoke about the possibility of a new stadium on Monday, indicating there was something on the horizon.
“I think this is going to be a very excititing thing for our community. It’s about economic development, it’s about securing a long-term home for the Royals,” Sherman said during the Royals Spring Training practice.
Kansas City Royals agree on contract extension for General Manager J.J. Picollo
“We’re working very hard and we got a deal that’s buttoned up and we’re looking forward to able to do it.”
Sherman has been adamant about the Royals getting a new stadium before their lease is up in 2031, first proposing the idea of a new ballpark in November of 2022.
Back in April of 2024, Jackson County residents voted no to extend the sales tax that would have helped pay for renovations at Arrowhead Stadium and a new downtown ballpark for the Royals.
Since that vote failed, the Royals have floated other locations where they could move to, most notably Washington Square Park, near Downtown Kansas City. The park sits at the corner of Pershing and Grand and is one block north of Crown Center and a block east of Union Station.
Kansas City Royals, LHP Cole Ragans agree to new 3-year deal
Other locations throughout the metro that have gained traction are the East Village and across the state line into Johnson County.
It’s an intriguing development to keep an eye on as the Royals approach the upcoming season.

Police said the victims were two males and one female, all in their 20s.

Police responded to the shooting at the Williamsburg Apartment complex on Crums Lane, directly across from the high school, around 5:20 p.m. Across from the roped-off building, residents huddled around each other in the parking lot, waiting for information. Police said there is no suspect and they do not believe there is a threat to the community. They are still processing the scene.

Aussie shares drop as traders wait for RBA decision
Aussie shares drop as traders wait for RBA decision
The local share market is on track for its second day of losses as traders wait to see if the Reserve Bank cuts rates for the first time in more than four years.
At midday AEDT on Tuesday, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was down 51.1 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 8,486.0, while the broader All Ordinaries was down 48.1 points, or 0.55 per cent, to 8,762.8.
Capital.com analyst Kyle Rodda said that the eyes of the world would temporarily be on Australia on Tuesday as the Reserve Bank hands down its latest decision on interest rates at 2.30pm.
The futures market on Monday was giving 90 per cent implied odds that Australia’s central bank would cut rates for the first time since November 2020.
“The RBA is highly likely to announce a rate cut this afternoon – a decision that will no doubt be welcomed by most Australians,” said VanEck’s head of investments and capital markets, Russel Chesler.
If the RBA surprises and keeps rates on hold, expect the ASX200 to dive back towards support at 8,440/8,460 and the *********** dollar to rip higher towards resistance at 64.40 to 64.60 US cents, said IG market analyst Tony Sycamore.
Overnight there was little news flow out of the United States, where markets were closed for a public holiday.
Seven of the ASX’s 11 sectors were lower at midday, with consumer staples, health care and tech higher and utilities flat.
Energy was the biggest mover, dropping 1.7 per cent as Woodside fell 2.2 per cent and Whitehaven Coal retreated 3.5 per cent.
In the heavyweight mining sector, BHP was up 0.8 per cent to $41.12 as the Big *********** announced its lowest interim dividend in eight years.
Fortescue was up 0.3 per cent, Rio Tinto had gained 0.4 per cent and South32 had dropped 1.0 per cent.
Goldminers lower as the precious metal traded at $US2,896 an ounce, with Northern Star falling 1.7 per cent and Evolution dipping 0.5 per cent.
All of the big four banks were lower, with Westpac dropping 2.2 per cent, CBA and NAB both retreating 1.2 per cent and ANZ dipping 0.6 per cent.
Hub24 had surged 7.6 per cent to $87.48 as the wealth management platform hiked its dividend by 30 per cent after turning a $42.6 million underlying profit in the first half, up 40 per cent from a year ago.
“Today’s strong Hub24 (HUB) result shows the company continues to consolidate wealth platform market share, in what remains a significant opportunity,” said Damon Callaghan, investments partner at ECP Asset Management.
“The highlight, however, was the strong profit margin improvement across the company.”
HMC Capital had grown 12.8 per cent to $11.17 after the alternative asset manager announced pre-tax operating earnings of $202.2 million, up 240 per cent from a year ago.
Judo Capital Holdings was also up 10 per cent after delivering its first-half result, while Challenger Limited had fallen a similar amount following its its earnings release.
The *********** dollar was buying 63.42 US cents, from 63.60 US cents at 5pm on Monday.

Jewish man mistakes two Israeli tourists for Palestinians and opens fire on them in Miami
Jewish man mistakes two Israeli tourists for Palestinians and opens fire on them in Miami
A Jewish man in Miami Beach is facing charges of attempted ******* following accusations that he opened fire on two men he believed were Palestinians but reportedly turned out to be Israeli visitors.
According to arrest documents, at 9.30pm on Saturday surveillance video appeared to show Mordechai Brafman, 27, getting out of his truck and opening fire with a semiautomatic handgun at a vehicle as it passed. Brafman allegedly fired 17 times, striking one victim in the left shoulder and grazing the other’s left forearm.
While in custody, Brafman spontaneously told detectives that while he was driving his truck, “he saw two Palestinians and shot and killed both”, arrest documents said.
Law enforcement officials did not confirm if the victims were in fact Palestinians and the Miami Herald reported that they were actually two vacationing Israelis, naming them as Ari Rabey and his father.
Facebook posts after the shooting show Rabey at Miami’s Jackson memorial hospital and his Hyundai with several bullet holes and markings.
The outlet reported that as of Monday afternoon, Brafman, the alleged shooter, was being held at the Miami-Dade correctional center on two counts of attempted second-degree *******.
Further complicating the incident, one of the injured men reportedly posted “death to the Arabs” in a message on social media after the shooting. “My father and I went through a ******* attempt against antisemitic background,” he wrote.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Florida chapter has called for federal hate crime charges in the shooting.
“It is deeply ironic and telling that both the alleged pro-Israel perpetrator and the pro-Israel victim in the Miami Beach shooting reportedly hold racist anti-************ views,” said Cair’s national executive director, Nihad Awad, on X.
“This just the latest example of the hate targeting the ************-American community in this country and Palestinians in their homeland. Policymakers in our nation should stop fomenting the anti-************ hate that led to the genocide in Gaza and to hate crimes in America.”

Honda ready to revive takeover talks if Nissan CEO Uchida leaves, FT reports
(Reuters) – Honda is willing to resume takeover talks to form the world’s fourth-biggest carmaker, provided Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida steps down, the Financial Times reported on Monday, citing sources familiar with the discussions.
Last week, merger talks between Honda, Japan’s second-largest automaker, and Nissan, its third, collapsed, ending plans to create a $60 billion car company.
This setback has plunged Nissan into further uncertainty, and highlights the pressure on legacy automakers from ******** rivals disrupting the industry.
Honda is willing to revive negotiations under a new boss who can more effectively manage internal opposition, the FT report said on Monday.
Uchida has expressed his intention to stay until 2026, but is facing pressure to step down in the coming months from board members and partner Renault following his mismanagement of negotiations for a $58 billion megadeal, FT report said.
Nissan’s board of directors has also started informal discussions regarding the timing of Uchida’s departure, according to the report.

Crowd gathers in downtown Bel Air to protest Trump, spur action by Harris
Chants from a loudspeaker denouncing President Donald Trump, the Department of Government Efficiency, and tech billionaire Elon Musk rang out in front of U.S. Rep. Andy Harris’ office in downtown Bel Air on Monday as dozens urged the Republican lawmaker to stand against the current administration’s actions.
The large crowd lined East Churchville Road wielding signs like “impeach president Musk,” “protect our constitution,” “absolute power corrupts absolutely” and more. Passing cars honked their horns and waved in support of the rally. Across the street from the rally, a man stood in front of his Tesla Cybertruck, with an American flag and a sign supporting Trump.
Attendees took turns speaking into a microphone to express their frustration with the current administration.
Sean Campbell, a 35-year-old Bel Air resident, held a sign that read: “Why would billionaires want to help you? End Elon’s wealth fair.” Campbell said he was formerly a Republican but switched parties due to the direction he said the party is headed.
“It became clear to me that the idea I have for a functioning, well-balanced government does not come at the cost of the health of the environment, the benefit of big businesses or with the ultimate end goal to make money,” Campbell said.
Campbell said he would like Harris, who represents Maryland’s first congressional district, to “speak up” against the president’s actions as well as listen and act on behalf of his Harford County constituents.
The rally follows Trump’s funding freeze of USAID, the civilian and foreign aid assistance agency; the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency headed by Musk; and Trump’s move to reduce the number of federal employees.
Harris, who was elected to Congress in 2010, is the only Republican Congress representative in Maryland and has been a staunch supporter of Trump.
Monday’s rally was organized by the Harford County Democratic Central Committee, the Harford County Democratic Club and the non-partisan group, Together We Will.
Henry Gibbons, chairman of the county Democratic central committee, said the rally was meant to signal to Harris that Democrats are “building their party” in Harford and that the county’s 67,000 Democratic voters are opposed to the Trump administration’s current actions.
“We are out here demonstrating our opposition to the ******** and unconstitutional and reckless activities of DOGE in particular,” Gibbons said. “People have a lot of issues with the way the administration is proceeding.”
In the 2024 election, Trump carried Harford County with 55% of the vote as former Vice President Kamala Harris got 42%. Statewide, Harris won Maryland with 63% of the vote.
Gibbons cited Trump’s plan to reduce the federal workforce, pointing out that Harford County is home to more than 23,000 federal employees.
The rally occurred on President’s Day, which Gibbons said was significant because it helped the party harness momentum. “The energy was building to get people involved and I think we managed to channel that pretty well,” Gibbons said.
Fallston resident Jeanne Galvin, a member of Together We Will, joined the rally to show her support for “democratic values” and to protest “unelected officials,” she said, referring to Musk.
Galvin said she previously worked for the University of Maryland, where she helped secure grant contracts for research. She said Trump’s push to shut down USAID and other federal grant funding opportunities would hurt the country.
“I am appalled at what is going on with USAID because we are walking away from every good thing,” Galvin said. “We are going to end up with nothing being invented here. It really stunts our growth and it is just sad.”
