(FOX5/KUSI) — San Diego County Sheriff’s investigators continue to search for the person responsible for the stabbing death of Cal Fire Capt. Becky Marodi inside her home in Ramona. As the investigation progresses, colleagues are remembering Marodi for her bravery and dedication to helping others. The 30-year veteran was known for her commitment to firefighting. In a recent Cal Fire video, she described the treacherous conditions she and her strike team faced while battling the Eaton Fire in Los Angeles County. “The feeling that I got while trying to make a stance on this fire was overwhelming and sad. I just wanted to make a difference,” Marodi said in the footage. Facing fast-moving flames and 80 mph winds, Marodi risked her life to protect others. “At one point, if we could just save these three houses, let’s do it,” she said. Beyond her courage, colleagues say Marodi was also known for her compassion. “She was always there for people. She always had a smile on her face,” said Cal Fire Capt. John Clingingsmith Jr., who had worked alongside Marodi for three decades. News of her death sent shockwaves through the firefighting community. “It’s been a big blur,” Clingingsmith said. “I found out yesterday morning from the chief in Riverside and immediately thought back to my most recent interaction with her.” That interaction was at a colleague’s ******** earlier this year. Marodi was a key member of the Cal Fire peer support team, often traveling to different stations to check on the well-being of firefighters. “All of those emotions came rushing back when I heard this,” Clingingsmith said. “She would normally be out there supporting others, and now we’re grappling with this loss without her.” Marodi would have turned 50 in June and was looking forward to retirement. “She had just talked about hanging up her helmet in 2025 and moving on to whatever that next chapter was going to be,” Clingingsmith said. Around 4:08 on Monday, ECSO responded to a call requesting a search for a missing backcountry skier around Powderhouse Peak near Luther Pass. The missing skier’s vehicle was located in a parking area. The El Dorado County Sheriff Coroner Division identified the skier as Frederic Dross, 46, of South Lake Tahoe. Two people hurt in Tahoe avalanche, serious injuries ECSO said he was found dead a short time later by friends in an avalanche area. Due to the dangerous snow conditions, deputies said the recovery of his body was postponed until early Tuesday. Justin Holman suffered a “catastrophic accident” on February 2 that left him unable to move his hands, fingers or anywhere below his waist, his brother said in a GoFundMe page. He already underwent emergency neck fusion surgery but he now requires rehabilitation, which UnitedHealthcare has denied to pay for. The family estimates the flight home via air ambulance will cost nearly $200,000 – something United won’t pay either, according to his brother, Stetson. Stetson told The Independent that a third-party administrator told his brother that it “wouldn’t be medically necessary to move him to the U.S. to get care” and that the healthcare company wouldn’t pay foreign claims. He says they have not received a denial in writing. So, the family has been “working under the assumption that [his rehab and transport] are not going to be paid.” “It would be super challenging” for him to stay in Switzerland,” Stetson said. Keeping Justin at a *******-speaking rehab facility for six weeks “is not really an option anyone is considering,” he added, noting that family members have to return to work and that Justin would be best served by a robust support network. The family is now asking for donations to pay for a medical flight so that he can get “life-saving spinal cord care” at a hospital in Denver. The family’s fundraiser has garnered $66,000 in contributions as of Tuesday morning. “We have in-network spine specialists and one of the best rehab facilities ready to take him, but he is stranded in a hospital abroad without the treatment that could make all the difference in his recovery,” the fundraiser said. “Every day that passes without rehab is a day lost in his fight for recovery.” Justin Holman suffered a ‘catastrophic accident’ while skiing in Switzerland, leaving him paralyzed. Credit: Intel Intel has faced severe financial and execution woes over the past couple of years, leading to all types of speculation about the future of the company, with the most recent rumors pointing to Broadcom’s interest in taking over Intel’s product business, as well as an alleged U.S. government intention to make TSMC run Intel Foundry manufacturing operations in a joint venture between Intel and the Taiwanese contract chipmaker. But there is an obstacle that many people overlook: the broad cross-licensing agreement between Intel and AMD, as observed by Digits-to-Dollars. AMD and Intel have a broad cross-licensing agreement (in fact, multiple agreements, with the most recent signed in 2009) that allows both companies to use each other’s patents while preventing lawsuits over possible infringements. This covers their entire portfolios, including CPUs, GPUs, and other innovations. AMD can produce x86-based processors with Intel’s instruction set extensions, while Intel can incorporate AMD’s innovations into its own CPUs. However, neither can develop processors that work with the other’s sockets or motherboards., and the agreement has strict conditions for termination. If either company merges, is acquired, or enters a joint venture that alters ownership, the deal ends immediately. In the event of one of these triggers, the two companies must negotiate a new licensing arrangement. Although some market observers tie the AMD and Intel cross-licensing agreement directly to the 1976 agreement concerning the x86 instruction set architecture (ISA), this is not the case. The agreements include a variety of extensions to x86 (such as SSE and AVX) as well as other innovations that are inseparable parts of today’s CPUs. While it is possible to build an x86 CPU without AVX, SSE, or other extensions, such processors will not be able to compete against modern counterparts. Thus, losing the license could be devastating to both AMD and Intel. In addition to the x86 ISA and extensions, the broad cross-licensing agreement between the two companies covers other technologies, including GPUs, DPUs, and FPGAs. Therefore, if the agreement were terminated, it would affect virtually all of AMD and Intel’s products, necessitating a renegotiation of the cross-licensing agreement. Companies in the high-tech industry tend to sign broad cross-licensing agreements, but a big question is whether AMD is actually interested in signing such an agreement with Broadcom. Historically, Broadcom was primarily known for networking solutions and wireless technologies, but today the company is a major player in the storage, cybersecurity, and infrastructure software markets. Perhaps more importantly, it has emerged as a leading developer of custom AI processors, collaborating with virtually all major cloud service providers and hyperscalers. Acquiring CPU capabilities would make Broadcom a formidable competitor for AMD. At present, Broadcom, armed with both CPUs and AI processors, poses a greater competitive threat to AMD than Intel, the latter of which lacks a clear AI strategy. While Digits-to-Dollars suggests that AMD could ask Broadcom to help counter Nvidia’s dominance in the AI market by creating “AMD-friendly” networking interfaces and connectivity solutions, Broadcom’s priority appears to be strengthening its position in the data center market, where it currently lacks CPUs. Once the company acquires a general-purpose data center processor business — further strengthened by Intel’s large client PC processor volumes — it will likely focus on developing its own AI data center platform consisting of CPUs and ASICs, rather than assisting AMD in competing with Nvidia. Of course, an industry-standard platform centered around open standards like Ultra Ethernet could make life easier for both AMD and Broadcom in their fight against Nvidia. However, competing with Broadcom will be more challenging for AMD than competing with Intel. Five Hanceville police officers were arrested and charged amid a probe into the department, Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker said. The spouse of one of the officers was also charged, he said. “This is a sad day for law enforcement, but at the same time, it is a good day for the rule of law,” Crocker said during a press briefing on Wednesday. Though the investigation encompassed the department’s evidence room and the death of a Hanceville dispatcher, 49-year-old Christopher Michael Willingham, who was found dead from a toxic drug combination at work, officials said. The Cullman County grand jury found that the Hanceville Police Department has “failed to account for, preserve and maintain evidence and in doing so has failed crime victims and the public at large,” making the evidence “unusable,” Crocker said. The grand jury further found that Willingham’s death was “the direct result of the Hanceville Police Department’s negligence, lack of procedure, general incompetence and disregard for human life,” Crocker said. None of the defendants were charged in Willingham’s death, Crocker said. Though the “unfettered access that a lot of people had” to the evidence room is the basis of the grand jury’s finding regarding the dispatcher’s death, Crocker said. “One of the most concerning things that we discovered in this process is that the Hanceville Police Department’s evidence room was not secured,” Crocker said. The dispatcher died on Aug. 23, 2024, with the cause of death determined to be the “combined toxic effects of fentanyl, gabapentin, diazepam, amphetamine, carisoprodol and methocarbamol,” and the manner of death an accident, according to the state medical examiner’s autopsy report. When asked if Willingham may have been exposed to fentanyl that was not kept in a secure place, Crocker said, “Nothing was secure about the evidence room. And when Mr. Willingham was discovered, there was evidence in his office.” A municipal judge entered an order on Wednesday calling for an audit of the evidence room, Crocker said. Officer William Andrew Shelnutt was charged with tampering with physical evidence, Crocker said. Eric Michael Kelso, who was a reserve officer, and his wife, Donna Reid Kelso, were charged with unlawful distribution of a controlled substance and conspiracy to unlawfully distribute a controlled substance, Crocker said. The distribution charges are not based on the distribution of anything within the evidence room, and they are “accused of distributing certain drugs to other individuals, including some of these other defendants,” he said. The Defense Departmen expects to redirect those fund to other programs in the department that would be prioritized by President Trump. Robert Salesses, who is performing the duties of deputy secretary of defense, said in a statement Wednesday evening that the department intends to produce budgets “that revive the warrior ethos, rebuild our military, and reestablish deterrence.” Some of the Trump priorities Salesses mentioned include border security, building an Iron Dome defense system for the U.S. and ending government diversity, equity and inclusion programs. Iron Dome is envisioned as an extensive, multilayered air defense system for the U.S. that Trump has said should include the ability to shoot down incoming missiles from space. He said that the secretary has ordered a review of spending plans in the Biden administration’s budget budget to offset the costs of Trump priorities for the 2026 fiscal year, which begins on Oct. 1. Salesses confirmed in the statement that the department seeks cuts of 8% from the Biden defense budget that would add up to about $50 billion. He mentioned “so-called ‘climate change’ and other woke programs, as well as excessive bureaucracy,” as line items that would be excised. It was not clear which parts of the Pentagon’s spending on diversity and equity programs or its spending to address climate change — such as buying alternate fuels for aircraft, or making bases more resistant to the effects of extreme weather, such as the 2018 hurricane that caused significant damage to Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida — would be targeted or could add up to $50 billion in savings. The spending cuts mandate comes as the military is quickly trying to write its fiscal year 2026 request, a congressional process that often starts late during transitions between new presidential administrations. The cuts would be as drastic as the single-year savings ordered across the military in the 2013 sequestration, a law passed by Congress that was intended to force the legislative branch to reach agreement on budget deficit reductions and instead forced the services to cut $56 billion in a matter of months. Because of the way the military budget is structured, long-term, high-dollar procurement programs at the time were protected, as were most entitlements such as military retirement and health care. At the time, the accounts that were easier to cut were found in operations, maintenance and personnel. The services lost noncommissioned officers — highly trained mid-level enlisted personnel — and cut training such as flight hours. Military training accidents quickly climbed. This what researchers in Chile have concluded after studying the potential of fog harvesting in the desert city of Alto Hospicio in the north of the country. Average rainfall in the region is less than 0.19in (5mm) per year. “The city also has a lot of social problems,” said lead researcher Dr Virginia Carter Gamberini, from Universidad Mayor. “Poverty, drugs, many slums.” With no access to water supply networks, people in the slums rely on drinking water that is delivered by truck. However, clouds of fog that regularly gather over the mountain city are an untapped source, researchers say. Maria Virginia Carter Gamberini Fog harvesting systems consist of a fine mesh, through which the moisture-laden clouds pass How do you harvest fog? Capturing fog water is remarkably simple – a mesh is hung between poles, and when the moisture-laden clouds pass through that fine mesh, droplets form. The water is then channelled into pipes and storage tanks. It has been used at a small scale for several decades, mainly in rural South and Central America – in places with the right foggy conditions. One of the biggest fog water harvesting systems is in Morocco, on the edge of the Sahara Desert. However, Dr Carter says a “new era” of much larger-scale fog harvesting could provide a more secure and sustainable supply of water in urban environments where it is most needed. Maria Virginia Carter Gamberini Alto Hospicio is in one of the world’s driest regions, and some of the poorest areas of the growing city have no secure water supply She and her colleagues carried out assessments of how much water can be produced by fog harvesting, and combined that information with studies of cloud formation in satellite images and with weather forecasts. From this, they concluded that the clouds that regularly form over the Pacific – and are blown across the coastal mountain city – could provide the people of Alto Hospicio’s slums with a sustainable source of drinking water. They published their findings in a paper in the journal Frontiers of Environmental Science. Alto Hospicio’s fog forms over the Pacific Ocean – when warm, moist air flows over cold water – and is then blown over the mountains. The reliably foggy conditions here allowed Dr Carter and her colleagues to pinpoint areas where the largest volumes of water could be harvested regularly from the clouds. Based on an annual average water collection rate of 2.5 litres per square metre of mesh per day, the researchers worked out: 17,000 sq m of mesh could produce enough water to meet the weekly water demand of 300,000 litres that is currently delivered by truck to urban slums110 sq m could meet the annual demand for the irrigation of the city’s green spacesFog water could be used for soil-free (hydroponic) agriculture, with yields of 33 to 44lb (15 to 20kg) of green vegetables in a monthGetty Images Scientists say “water from the clouds” could enhance some arid cities’ resilence to climate change Alto Hospicio is on the edge of the Atacama Desert – one of the driest places on Earth. With urban populations growing, and demand on those water supplies from mining and industry, the scientists say there is an urgent need for other sustainable sources of clean water. Dr Gamberini explained that Chile is “very special” for its sea fog, “because we have the ocean along the whole country and we have the mountains”. Ohio’s Department of Health’s yearly mosquito surveillance found the West Nile virus is alive and well in the Buckeye State, Hoodline reported. What’s happening? The testing collected over 416,000 mosquito samples, finding that over 8% of them across 41 counties tested positive for the West Nile virus. As Hoodline put it, these rates indicate “a clear presence of the virus” in Ohio. The counties that reported the highest rates — Franklin County followed by Lorain and Summit — are now “prompting heightened awareness and preventive measures to be taken by the residents and local health authorities.” These surveillance efforts are part of the preventive measures, and Hoodline described them as “crucial in understanding the prevalence and proactively managing the spread of these vector-borne diseases.” Why are mosquito-borne illnesses on the rise? The species of mosquito that spread the West Nile virus fall under the Culex genus, and they have established populations on all of the major inhabited continents. The females lay their eggs in water, using any source from puddles to flooded cellars, rice fields, river edges, ornamental ponds, and more. Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City? But the real issue and mounting threat is that the Culex survives in high temperatures. The higher the temperature, the faster their eggs hatch, and the more generations they can produce each year, per the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. This means that, as global temperatures continue to rise due to human-generated pollution, the Culex’s potential inhabitable regions expand, and their breeding season gets longer. The issue is the same for another common disease-spreading type of mosquito, called Aedes, also known as the tiger mosquito. They are responsible for deadly diseases like Zika, dengue fever, chikungunya, yellow fever, and more — and as their territories expand, so too does the public health risk posed by these diseases. What’s being done to minimize the spread? For Ohio, their detailed surveillance map will serve as a tool to help them “track, avert, and respond to the geographic flow of the West Nile virus as the year progresses,” Hoodline explained. Officials urged residents to take preventive measures both to keep from getting bitten and to minimize potential breeding spots in the area. This includes using non-toxic sprays or deterrents — like citronella candles, burnt coffee grounds, and vanilla — to covering any water caches and draining any stagnant water.
