Deaf professor files civil rights lawsuit against Penn State, alleges disability discrimination
Deaf professor files civil rights lawsuit against Penn State, alleges disability discrimination
An associate professor who is deaf alleged in a lawsuit filed Friday that Penn State violated his civil rights when the university removed his two full-time American Sign Language interpreters.
Joseph M. Valente, an associate professor of education since 2010, cast the university’s move as a cost-cutting measure at the expense of accessibility. The suit said his accommodation was replaced with an “inadequate framework that severely impairs Dr. Valente’s ability to fulfill his professional obligations.”
When he pushed back, Valente alleged the university retaliated against him and created a hostile work environment. He said Penn State canceled his graduate courses, blocked his grant funding accommodations and excluded him from faculty governance.
The 27-page lawsuit also said the university placed Valente on administrative leave after Penn State’s Office of Ethics and Compliance launched an administrative investigation, prohibiting him from teaching, contacting students or accessing the University Park campus.
“Penn State’s actions have marginalized Dr. Valente within the academic community, caused significant project delays, and inflicted financial harm,” his attorneys wrote in the suit. “Through this action, Dr. Valente seeks to vindicate not only his own rights under federal disability law, but also to ensure that Penn State fulfills its legal obligations to provide reasonable accommodations to faculty members with disabilities and maintain an academic environment free from discrimination and retaliation.”
A Penn State spokesperson declined Tuesday to offer an initial response to Valente’s allegations. The university generally does not speak publicly about pending litigation.
The lawsuit said Penn State formally approved providing Valente with two full-time ASL interpreters about a decade ago. The plan also included three backup interpreters who were familiar with Valente’s work.
That accommodation allowed him for six years to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, advise doctorate students and participate in faculty meetings, his suit said.
He claimed that longtime accommodation continued until the university provided only one full-time interpreter. Valente said he immediately experienced “significant barriers” to performing his job after the reduction.
“The current accommodation framework effectively forces Dr. Valente to choose between fulfilling his teaching duties and maintaining his research and service obligations due to artificially limited interpreter availability,” his attorneys wrote.
Among Valente’s claims is an allegation Penn State violated the Americans with Disabilities Act, a 1990 federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability.
He is seeking, among other changes, to have his two full-time ASL interpreters restored and a requirement that Penn State establish a centralized funding system for accommodations and implement a comprehensive disability training program.

Fed, concerned over Trump tariffs, might hold rates
Fed, concerned over Trump tariffs, might hold rates
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell testifies before the Senate Banking Committee in the Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill on February 11, 2025 in Washington, DC.

Members of the U.S. Federal Reserve’s rate-setting committee unanimously agreed to hold rates steady in January because they were, in part, worried about the impact that U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs would have on inflation. As if proving the Fed prescient, Trump announced on Tuesday (more) possible tariffs on targeted sectors.
Apple launched a new low-cost iPhone on Wednesday in a bid to expand its market share. The competitively priced — in relation to its regular models — smartphone might not be as attractive in value if tariffs force Apple, among other U.S. companies, to raise prices.
That said, the stock market was unshaken, with the S&P 500 merrily climbing its way to another record close. Stocks are buoyed by a healthy U.S. economy, and Fed officials are optimistic about the economic outlook, according to minutes from their January meeting, which might also complicate progress towards bringing down inflation.
What you need to know today
Fed concerns over tariffsU.S. Federal Reserve officials agreed they would need to see inflation drop more before lowering interest rates further, according to minutes of their January meeting, released Wednesday. They noted “upside risks to the inflation outlook. In particular, participants cited the possible effects of potential changes in trade and immigration policy,” the minutes stated.
Possible Trump tariffs on autosOn top of tariffs already announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, he suggested on Tuesday that he might impose levies on imports of automobiles, pharmaceuticals and semiconductors. In remarks to reporters, Trump said the duties would be around 25%, could start as early as April 2 and go “substantially higher over a course of a year.” The nations with the biggest auto exports to the U.S. are Mexico, Japan and Canada.
Second straight record for S&PThe S&P 500 ended Wednesday 0.24% higher, notching another record close. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.16%, and the Nasdaq Composite ticked up 0.07%. Palantir shares slumped 10% on news that the U.S. Defense Secretary is ordering the Pentagon to slash its budget. Asia-Pacific markets fell Thursday. Japan and South Korea auto stocks, such as Nissan Motor and Hyundai Motor, retreated on the specter of auto tariffs, weighing down the indexes of both countries.
China holds interest rates The People’s Bank of China on Thursday kept its key interest rates unchanged. The one-year loan prime rate stayed at 3.1% and the five-year LPR at 3.6%, suggesting that Beijing is prioritizing financial stability over economic stimulus. Both numbers were in line with Reuters poll estimates. The former influences corporate loans and most household loans in China, while the latter serves as a benchmark for mortgage rates.
Apple drops new iPhoneApple announced on Wednesday the iPhone 16e, which is priced at $599, lower than its mainline iPhone models, and will go on ***** later this month. It uses Apple’s A18 chips, which are also found in the main iPhone 16 models. This means the iPhone 16e supports Apple Intelligence, making it Apple’s least expensive new phone that can access features like image generation and notification summaries.
[PRO] Shrugging off tariff threat Despite the uncertainties generated by tariffs — and with each week seemingly a new one announced — stocks have generally climbed since Trump’s inauguration. The S&P even notched two consecutive closing highs Tuesday and Wednesday. This is why investors aren’t shaken by Trump’s tariffs, according to Goldman Sachs’ chief economist.
And finally…

Microsoft deploys new state of matter in its first quantum computing chip
Microsoft on Wednesday announced Majorana 1, its first quantum computing chip. The tech giant claims that building Majorana 1 required that it create an entirely new state of matter, which it is referring to as a topological state. Microsoft’s quantum chip employs eight topological qubits using indium arsenide, which is a semiconductor, and aluminum, which is a superconductor.
Rather than relying on TSMC or another company for fabrication, Microsoft is manufacturing the components of Majorana 1 itself in the U.S. That’s possible because the work is unfolding at a small scale. Technologists believe quantum computers could one day efficiently solve problems that would be taxing, if not impossible, for classical computers.

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon criticizes select DEI spending
In leaked audio, JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon weighed in on the bank’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, considering certain programs to be wasteful spending. The major bank went on to omit any reference to DEI practices in its annual 10-K filing for 2024.
Yahoo Finance banking reporter David Hollerith comes on the program to comment on Dimon’s latest arguments, while affirming his commitment to other support programs.
This all comes after Dimon also heavily criticized hybrid and remote work at JPMorgan’s town hall last week as the bank pushes forward with in-office mandates.

Migrants in Panama deported from US moved to Darien jungle region
Migrants in Panama deported from US moved to Darien jungle region
By Elida Moreno
PANAMA CITY (Reuters) – A group of nearly 100 migrants deported from the U.S. to Panama last week has been moved from a hotel in the capital to the Darien jungle region in the south of the country, Panama’s government said on Wednesday.
In a statement, Panama’s security ministry said of the 299 migrants deported from the U.S. in recent days, 13 had been repatriated to their countries of origin while another 175 remained in the hotel in Panama City awaiting onward journeys after agreeing to return home.

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
The migrants have been staying at the hotel under the protection of local authorities and with the financial support of the United States through the U.N.-related International Organization for Migration and the U.N. refugee agency, according to the Panamanian government.
The migrants include people from Afghanistan, China, India, Iran, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Turkey, Uzbekistan and Vietnam, according to Panama’s president, Jose Raul Mulino, who has agreed with the U.S. to receive non-Panamanian deportees.
The deportation of non-Panamanian migrants to Panama is part of the Trump administration’s attempt to ramp up deportations of migrants living in the U.S. illegally.
One of the challenges of Trump’s plan is that some migrants come from countries that refuse to accept U.S. deportation flights due to strained diplomatic relations or other reasons.
The arrangement with Panama allows the U.S. to deport these nationalities and makes it Panama’s responsibility to organize their repatriation.
The process has been criticized by human rights groups that worry migrants could be mistreated and also fear for their safety if they are ultimately returned to violent or war-torn countries of origin, such as Afghanistan.
Susana Sabalza, a Panamanian migration lawyer representing one of the families transferred to the San Vicente shelter in the Darien region, said she had not been able to see her clients while they were held at the hotel in Panama City and is seeking permission to visit them at their new location.
She declined to identify their nationality, but said they were a ******* family who “could be decapitated” if they returned home.
Sabalza said the family would be requesting asylum in Panama or “any country that will receive them other than their own.”
The security ministry statement said 97 migrants had been transferred to the shelter in the Darien region, which includes dense and lawless jungle separating Central America from South America.
In recent years, it has become a corridor for hundreds of thousands of migrants aiming to reach the United States. Eight more migrants would be moved there soon, the statement added.
Early on Wednesday, the hotel in Panama City where the migrants had been held appeared quiet, according to a Reuters witness.
On Tuesday some migrants had been seen holding hands and looking out of a window of the hotel to get the attention of reporters outside.
Migrants in the hotel were not allowed to leave, according to media reports.
A ******** national, Zheng Lijuan, escaped from the hotel, according to Panama’s migration service, but was later caught in Costa Rica and returned to Panama.

Ball gets one up on James and misfiring Doncic in NBA
Ball gets one up on James and misfiring Doncic in NBA
LaMelo Ball has got one up on superstar duo LeBron James and a misfiring Luka Doncic, sparking the Charlotte Hornets to an upset 100-97 win over the host Los Angeles Lakers.
In the NBA’s first game following the All-Star break, the lowly-ranked Hornets (14-39) snapped a three-game losing skid on Wednesday as Ball scored 27 points, including a driving layup with 14.2 seconds remaining.
Miles Bridges scored 29 points, Nick Smith Jr. had 12 and Mark Williams added 10 points with nine rebounds for the Hornets, who also got four points, three rebounds, an assist and two steals from their *********** starter Josh Green.
The day’s only NBA match was a make-up game, rescheduled after their January fixture was postponed due to the LA wildfires.
Ball, a Los Angeles-area native, added six assists with five rebounds while helping to fuel a 23-3 run between the third and fourth quarters.
James scored 26 points with 11 assists and Rui Hachimura had 17 points with eight rebounds as the Lakers (32-21) lost consecutive games for the first time since January 5-7.
But James missed a pair of 3-point attempts in the closing seconds that would have tied the game.
Doncic had 14 points with 11 rebounds and eight assists in his third game since he was acquired from the Dallas Mavericks at the trade deadline.
The Slovenian ace shot just five of 18 from the floor and one of nine from 3-point range and also committed six turnovers and five personal fouls while playing 33 minutes in his longest performance since joining the Lakers.
Doncic is 16 for 45 from the field in his three games with the Lakers, but just five for 24 on 3-point attempts — including two for 16 in his two home games, where fans have buzzed with anticipation of each shot and then groaned at each clank.
“It’s his third game since Christmas, and it’s his third game with us,” James said. “He still doesn’t know all the plays. He doesn’t know all the defensive coverages, all the signals and things that we’ve built up since September.
“Obviously, we’re trying to fast-track it on the fly. He’s coming back from his injury. He’s getting back into form, so we’re working through it together.”
Dorian Finney-Smith had 12 points off the bench for Los Angeles, who lost Austin Reaves (eight points) after he was ejected for arguing a non-call in the third quarter. The Lakers led by as many as 13 in the third quarter.

Neighborhoods are being abandoned on one side of the Charlotte airport. So why is housing being proposed on the other side?
Neighborhoods are being abandoned on one side of the Charlotte airport. So why is housing being proposed on the other side?
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Members of Charlotte City Council expressed concern regarding the planning staff recommending approving housing in an area known for airport noise.
Greystar Development East, LLC is proposing to build 306 apartments across six buildings off Queen City Drive, just north of Interstate 85 and Charlotte Douglas International. The 11.5-acre property is near mostly single-family houses plus a couple of churches but also falls under the Airport Noise Disclosure Overlay.
Historic home connected to Charlotte church demolished despite preservation efforts
The rezoning would be from a mixed-use development (MUDD) to Neighborhood 2 Conditional (N2C), which is intended for multi-family dwellings with smaller setbacks. The noise overlay designation would remain regardless of zoning.
Councilwoman LaWana Mayfield noted how on the south side of the airport, many of the residential areas along Steele Creek Road have been rezoned for industrial uses in recent years. This has been due to the impact of noise related to the ever-growing airport. A fourth parallel runway for CLT is under construction.
“I’m trying to understand the support of planning staff for projects that we already know are in the noise overlay, but also are extremely close to the highway and the environmental impact of noise, gas, fuels coming from highway where traffic is going 24 hours,” she said to city staff. “Explain why this would be encouraged while at the same time supporting a program to ensure we have better air quality.”
Staff recommends approval of this petition. They noted how this property is at the northern end of the noise overlay.
Staff approval comes despite the petition being inconsistent with the city’s 2040 Policy Map. A 9-acre section of the property was approved in 2019 for a hotel that was never built.
Mayfield also was concerned that just because the rezoning process acknowledges the noise from the nation’s sixth busiest airport, it’s unlikely that this would be disclosed to prospective renters at the proposed complex.
“Being within the noise overlay doesn’t preclude housing or that it should be exempt from being considered for housing, just that it should be noticed to future residents,” the staff member said. “It was identified as a need in terms of equitable framework is being where there is intense need for variety of housing options. Having multifamily, it does speak to that need.”
“This isn’t being ignored per se, but we didn’t feel it’s something that should be considered against the proposal,” she said. “It was appropriate given its location and need for housing in this area.”
Despite the property having a Queen City Drive address, the complex’s entrance would be from Tuckaseegee Road, making it more accessible to the schools along that road. An 8-foot planting-strip buffer is required off of Queen City Drive, which is a service road to I-85.
For the first time since the ’70s, new flight paths could be added around Charlotte
In terms of the environmental impacts, Councilman Ed Driggs suggested action being taken that would make this part of rezoning decisions.
“We don’t have a policy about this,” he said, noting it would be an extensive process to create one. “If it is the wish of the council to make a referral whether zoning decisions should be formed by environmental concerns on a location-by-location basis, that’s not two sentences, then you have to get deep into circumstances. We don’t have that policy, so I’ll accept the suggestion of a referral, that would imply that we get a majority to agree that’s something to be taken up by the committee.”
Councilwoman Renee Johnson reminded the board that it’s their responsibility to make these decisions that shape the city’s planning policies.
“We know about the environmental challenges,” she said. “If hearings are not the time to address it, we have to make time to address it.”
A date for the board to vote on the apartment’s rezoning has yet to be determined.

Dubois v Parker: Champion can reach heights of Fury & Joshua, says Fabio Wardley
Dubois v Parker: Champion can reach heights of Fury & Joshua, says Fabio Wardley
Yes, you need to do the job in the ring and knock people out in emphatic fashion and all of the rest, but there is a level of prowess and speech – the star power – that you need to become the head of the division, a title Fury and AJ have both held over the past few years.
AJ and Fury are polar opposites in terms of how their star power works or how they behave. With AJ it’s that calm, cool, confident, down-to-earth chilled guy. With Fury, he’s louder, braggadocious, entertaining.
Dubois is a quiet guy but he is becoming a bit of a character with his one-liners. He will develop his own version of what that star power looks like, because that personality can come in so many different shapes and sizes.
In order to get to that level, though, he needs to get past a tough Joseph Parker – which is no easy task.
There is a case to be made for both fighters. Dubois’ confidence and power, and his willingness to throw down against a resurgent fighter who has seen it and done it all.

Which Console Has Better Games in 2025?
Which Console Has Better Games in 2025?
It’s a new year, you’re a gamer who hasn’t been in the hobby for a while and you want a new console. You look at the Xbox Series S|X and the PlayStation 5|Pro. You remember the good days of old, the console war of exclusives and ecosystems and you finally reach the big question.
So what do the console wars look like in 2025? | Image Credit: Microsoft
Which console has the better games in 2025? The answer is more complicated than it seems, and it all depends on what kind of gamer you are. The easy answer is the PS5 but the thing is, Microsoft isn’t fighting back with the Xbox Series S|X, its main competitor is the Xbox Game Pass. But what does that even mean?
Xbox vs Playstation looks very different in 2025
PlayStation is leading and it’s not surprising. | Image Credit: PlayStation
Sony’s reputation for high-quality exclusives remains unmatched in 2025. The PS5 has continued to deliver standout titles such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarök, and Horizon Forbidden West, games which are the defining titles of the current generation. Astro Bot, 2024’s Game of The Year, is also under PlayStation’s belt.
GAME OF THE YEAR BEST FAMILY GAME BEST GAME DIRECTION BEST ACTION/ADVENTURE GAME
THE ASTRO BOT SWEEP IS CRAZY.#GameAwards2024 pic.twitter.com/jvJ2V5tXNL
— JOLLY J (@DynamoSuperX) December 13, 2024
In 2024, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, and Silent Hill 2 Remake were added to an already impressive lineup. And while Microsoft has been catching up, PlayStation still holds the edge when it comes to the sheer variety and quality of first-party games. Part of this is because Microsoft has abandoned that aspect of the console wars.
While Xbox initially struggled with exclusive titles at the start of this generation, Microsoft’s acquisitions of Bethesda and Activision-Blizzard are starting to bear fruit. The Xbox Series X has gotten titles like Starfield, Forza Motorsport 8, and Halo Infinite. On top of this, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a major exclusive in early 2025, but it’s set to come to PS5 later this year.
“I’m not trying to move them all over to Xbox anymore..let’s just allow more people to play.”
Phil Spencer says Xbox will also show PS5 logo during their Showcases for which games are releasing on all platforms
(via @xboxera podcast) pic.twitter.com/HusJzizBmI
— CharlieIntel (@charlieINTEL) February 16, 2025
And that’s where we can see this new strategy from Microsoft and Xbox. Rather than relying solely on exclusive titles, Microsoft is going all in on its Game Pass service to be the main platform with its extensive and ever-growing library of games. Microsoft’s decision to release some of its biggest games on PlayStation as well shows that exclusivity is no longer its primary goal.
Microsoft isn’t even focusing on hardware anymore
Microsoft went all in on the Game Pass strategy. | Image Credit: Microsoft
The idea that “everything is an Xbox” means that players no longer need a console to access Microsoft’s library. This does make us ask some questions about the future. If future titles like The Elder Scrolls 6, and Gears of War become available on PlayStation and other platforms, will the Xbox console itself still be relevant?
In terms of sales, PlayStation is ahead according to recent reports. In November 2024, estimates suggested that the PS5 outsold the Xbox Series X/S by more than five-to-one, with Sony selling 4.1 million units compared to Microsoft’s 767,000. The launch of the PS5 Pro will have no doubt been a help, despite its somewhat egregious pricing.
If the debate is purely about high-quality exclusives, PlayStation is still winning. But Microsoft’s strategy of making its ecosystem accessible across multiple devices is a real curve ball. Game Pass makes it easier for players to access a wider variety of games at a lower cost, and it’s already been a big hit. So who knows what the future holds?

Bill Gates says younger generations should be worried about 4 ‘very scary’ things
Bill Gates says younger generations should be worried about 4 ‘very scary’ things
Bill Gates told Patrick Collison that younger generations should worry about four things.
They are the climate crisis, unchecked AI, nuclear war, and the spread of disease.
Gates said that despite his concerns, he thinks people will be “so much better off” in the future.
Bill Gates says that if he were young again, he’d be afraid of more than just the atom bomb.
“There’s, you know, about four or five things that are very scary, and the only one that I really understood and worried about a lot when I was young was nuclear war,” Gates said in an interview with Patrick Collison.
Gates, the founder of Microsoft and chair of the Gates Foundation, shared his perspective on the evolving risks facing society.
“Today I think we’d add climate change, bioterrorism/pandemic, and keeping control of AI in some form,” Gates said. “So, you know, now we have four footnotes.”
Gates also described social polarization as a problem, later adding, “The younger generation has to be very afraid of those things.”
This isn’t the first time Gates has identified these areas of concern. In a blog post in 2023, Gates said that as his family grew, so did his desire to better the world.
“A grandchild does make you think about how we make sure the future is better — politics, health, climate, etc.,” he wrote.
Gates argued that society is suffering from a dearth of intelligence. But he believes AI could present a solution rather than a problem. Though some have warned of AI’s cataclysmic potential, Gates thinks it could be harnessed productively.
“We don’t have as many medical experts, you know, people who can stay on top of everything, or people who can do math tutoring in the inner city,” Gates said. “And we have a shortage of intelligence, and so we use this market system to kind of allocate it. AI, over time — and people can argue about the time frames — will make intelligence essentially free.”
Despite the challenges, Gates said he still expects the citizens of the future to be largely better off — if they address the risks.
“Absent not solving some of these big problems, things are going to be so much better off,” Gates said. “Alzheimer’s, obesity, you know, we’ll have a cure for ****, we will have gotten rid of polio, measles, malaria. The pace of innovation is greater today than ever.”
While fear can often act as a paralytic, Gates believes it could be a galvanizing force for younger generations.
“They’ll actually, to some degree, exaggerate the likelihood and maybe the impact of some of those things in order to activate people to make sure we steer clear of those things,” he said.

Smartphones With Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, Dimensity 9500 to Launch Ahead of Schedule, Tipster Claims
Smartphones With Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, Dimensity 9500 to Launch Ahead of Schedule, Tipster Claims
The first smartphones equipped with the purported Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 and Dimensity 9500 chipsets will arrive earlier than previously anticiapted this year, according to details shared by a tipster. ******** smartphone makers are usually the first to introduce new handsets equipped with the latest flagship chipsets from Qualcomm and MediaTek, while Samsung typically launches new high-end smartphones in January. Previous reports suggest Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 will arrive with notable performance upgrades over the chipmaker’s current flagship chipset.
Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, Dimensity 9500 Launch Timeline (Expected)
According to a post by tipster Digital Chat Station (translated from ********) on Weibo, the first smartphones with the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 or Dimensity 9500 will be launched in October. However, the user also claims that some manufacturers might unveil new smartphones by September.
It’s worth noting that Qualcomm typically unveils its flagship chipset in October, at its annual Snapdragon Summit event. Smartphone makers usually announce new handsets with the chipset a few weeks later — Xiaomi and Realme have been the first to unveil new flagship models in recent years.
Last year, the same tipster claimed that Qualcomm’s SM8850 chipset, which is expected to be the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, will be produced using TSMC’s N3P fabrication process. The chipset is tipped to offer “significantly improved” GPU performance, compared to the current model, which is produced using TSMC’s N3E process technology.
On the other hand, the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 could be equipped with two Cortex-X930 prime cores dubbed “Travis” and six Cortex-A730 “Gelas” performance cores, according to the tipster. Unlike the Dimensity 9400, which is equipped with only performance cores, this year’s model could use a 2+6 configuration. The upcoming chipset is also expected to be produced using TSMC’s N3P fabrication process, delivering better performance and efficiency.
While the ******** tipster has a good track record of leaking accurate information about upcoming flagship smartphones, it’s worth noting that the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 and Dimensity 9500 are not expected to arrive until early October. It’s worth taking these claims with a grain of salt, and we’re likely to hear more details about these chips in the coming weeks and months, ahead of their anticipated debut.

Instagram Rolls Out Message Translation, Easy Music Sharing and More for DMs
Instagram Rolls Out Message Translation, Easy Music Sharing and More for DMs
Instagram on Wednesday announced new features for direct messages (DMs). It adds the capability of translating messages in different languages in 1:1 chats, enables users to schedule messages, and makes it easier to share music with others without leaving the chat window. And while Instagram previously allowed users to pin up to three chat threads at the top of the DMs inbox, they can now also pin specific chats on the instant messaging platform.
New Features on Instagram
Instagram detailed the new features coming to DMs in a blog post. It introduces a message translation feature, which as the name suggests, lets users translate messages received from others in their preferred language directly in DMs. At launch, the feature supports 99 languages. The company notes that messages selected for translation will be shared with Meta.
Another new feature is message scheduling. Similar to the recently introduced capability on iPhone following the iOS 18 update, Instagram now enables users to schedule messages. Additionally, they can also schedule reminders. To do this, simply hold down on the send button, select the date and time for scheduling, and tap on Send.
The instant messaging platform claims that its latest update makes it easier to find important conversations and keep them handy. While it previously let users pin up to three chat threads, users can now pin specific messages too. To access this feature, they need to hold down on the message and select the Pin option.
And if you’re conversing about the latest music with your friends in DMs, you can now send a 30 second preview of it to them without leaving the chat window. This change is applicable in both 1:1 and group chats. To share a song, open the sticker tray in the chat and tap on the ‘Music’ option to search for any song in the audio library. Next, tap on the track to send a 30-second preview of the selected track.
The last notable addition is the sharing of personalised QR codes for group chats. Users can create a QR code of a specific group chat and show it to others, who can scan it and join the chat. Instagram says this eliminates the need of adding each individual specifically to group conversations.

Assessing Claims That Pete Hegseth Was Drinking at a Press Conference
Assessing Claims That Pete Hegseth Was Drinking at a Press Conference
Several viral social media posts claim that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was drinking alcohol during a NATO press conference.
“6 questions, 3 scotches,” reads one post by Ron Filipkowski, editor-in-chief of MeidasTouch News. The post had been viewed more than 3.6 million times on X by midday Tuesday. “Trump’s Drunk Secretary Hegseth just casually drinking on the job on live news,” reads another version that includes a video of the press conference.
The claims are unfounded: There is no evidence that Hegseth was drinking scotch or another alcoholic beverage during his press conference.
Last Thursday, Hegseth held a press conference following a meeting of NATO defense officials in Brussels. During the press conference, where Hegseth answered questions from reporters about a prospective resolution to the war in Ukraine, he took several sips from a small glass on his podium. There is no evidence that the glass contained alcohol. Though the liquid appears slightly brown-tinted in one of the images shared widely online, higher-definition videos from the conference show that the liquid was clear and likely water. It is common for officials to be provided glasses of water during press conferences and speaking events.

During his confirmation process, Hegseth faced scrutiny over allegations of excessive drinking, among other personal issues. In December, 10 current and former Fox employees told NBC News that Hegseth had “drank in ways that concerned his colleagues at Fox News.” The New Yorker similarly reported that Hegseth had been “repeatedly intoxicated while acting in his official capacity,” while working as president of Concerned Veterans for America.
In a December interview with Megyn Kelly, Hegseth said that he planned not to drink if confirmed. “When I deployed, we had something called General Order Number 1. And in General Order Number 1, it is, you are not allowed to drink while you’re on deployment,” Hegseth said. “That’s how I view this role as secretary of defense, is that I’m not going to have a drink at all. And that’s not hard for me because it’s not a problem for me.”
Hegseth made a similar pledge during his confirmation hearing when asked by Democratic Sen. Mazie Hirono whether he would uphold a promise made to Republican senators to stop drinking if confirmed. “You recently promised some of my Republican colleagues that you’d stop drinking, won’t drink, if confirmed. Correct?” she asked. “Absolutely,” Hegseth responded. However, Hegseth refused to answer directly a question about whether he would resign the position if he was caught drinking while serving.
The Department of Defense did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Dispatch Fact Check.
