Alpha Data plans to raise up to $163 million in Abu Dhabi’s first IPO of 2025
(Reuters) -UAE technology services firm Alpha Data plans to raise up to $163.2 million, the company said on Thursday, in Abu Dhabi’s first initial public offering this year.
Alpha Data plans to list 400 million shares in a price range of 1.45 dirhams to 1.50 dirhams apiece, which implies a market value of up to $408 million.
The offering consists entirely of existing shares held by investors Bin Hamoodah and Ibbini Investment.
Alpha Data expects to distribute a total dividend of 130 million dirhams ($35.40 million) in 2025.
The IPO subscription will open on Thursday and end on February 25, and the stock will trade on the exchange on or about March 11.
Stock markets in the Gulf have seen a wave of IPOs in recent years, aided by government efforts to diversify their economies away from oil.
Alpha Data reported a net profit of 127 million dirhams and revenue of 2.32 billion dirhams for 2024.

European markets are expected to open higher Thursday as investors prepare for earnings reports from a raft of major European companies.
The U.K.’s FTSE 100 index is expected to open 10 points higher at 8,696, Germany’s DAX up 49 points at 22,475, France’s CAC up 16 points at 8,118 and Italy’s FTSE MIB 32 points higher at 38,437, according to data from IG.
Earnings are set to come from Accor, Schneider Electric, Mercedes, Zurich Insurance, Lloyds Banking Group, Centrica, Airbus, Hays, Anglo American, Renault, Repsol, Leonardo and Aegon. There are no major data releases Thursday.
U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs on autos, chips and pharmaceutical imports, and the possibility that the Federal Reserve keeps interest rates higher for longer, are also a focus for global markets on Thursday.
Trump, who said the duties could be implemented as soon as April 2, did not specify whether they will be targeted at imports from certain countries or be broad-based.
Meanwhile, Fed officials in January agreed they would need to see inflation come down more before lowering interest rates further, according to meeting minutes released Wednesday. Asia-Pacific markets and S&P 500 futures were lower overnight.

I’m not happy with Boeing, Trump says over Air Force One
I’m not happy with Boeing, Trump says over Air Force One
The US President Donald Trump has said he is not happy with Boeing over a contract to build two new Air Force One planes that is running behind schedule.
Speaking on board one of the 35-year-old presidential planes that are currently in use, Trump also said he is looking for alternatives because it is taking Boeing too long to build the planes.
The contract for two updated versions of the presidential plane based on the modern Boeing 747-8 were negotiated during Trump’s first term in office.
Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BBC News.
“No, I’m not happy with Boeing. It takes them a long time to do, you know, Air Force One, we gave that contract out a long time ago,” Trump said.
“We may buy a plane or get a plane, or something.”
When asked whether he would consider buying new planes from Boeing’s European rival, Airbus, Trump said “No, I would not consider Airbus over Boeing, but I could buy one that was used and convert it.”
It comes days after Trump visited a 13-year-old Boeing 747-800 that had been owned by the Qatari royal family while it was parked at Palm Beach International Airport.
The new aircraft from Boeing were set for delivery in 2024 but the plane maker has pushed the delivery back to 2027 or 2028.
During his first term as president, Trump forced the plane maker to renegotiate its contract, calling the initial deal too expensive.
That contract has already cost Boeing billions of dollars.
Kitting out the planes for presidential use is extremely costly. It requires installing highly-classified and complex communications, safety and accessibility features.
Last year was dreadful for Boeing. The aerospace giant lost $11.8bn (£9.4bn) across the whole of 2024, its worst result since 2020, when the aviation industry was grounded by the Covid pandemic.
In the three months to the end of December, when strikes were affecting the business, it lost $3.8bn.
As well as suffering from well-publicised problems at its commercial aircraft unit, Boeing also faced issues with number of defence programmes.

New law should come into NI ‘sooner than later’
New law should come into NI ‘sooner than later’
Liam Charlton-Killen
Liam Charlton-Killen owns an online school wear company and has a son in first form at secondary school
Very expensive, not fair, through the roof – ask parents in Northern Ireland about school uniforms and these are the kind of words you’ll hear.
That’s a big reason behind the introduction of a new law at Stormont, which aims to compel schools to explain to parents the reasons for the uniform prices and possibly even lead to the introduction of a price cap.
The bill was introduced by Education Minister Paul Givan in the assembly on Tuesday, but will have to be scrutinised and debated by assembly members before it becomes law.
Liam Charlton-Killen, the father of an 11-year-old boy who began secondary school and the owner of an online schoolwear company, said he has a “foot in both camps” when it comes to the issue.
“My son has started at a well-known high school in Belfast in first form and I spent nearly £400 in kitting him out in uniform – I nearly died,” he said.
He said choice and flexibility is a major issue for parents. For his child, he said it was good that there were four or five suppliers for the uniform itself.
“But there was only one supplier for the PE kit, so they had a monopoly, and the cost was reflected in that.
“It was £30 for a pair of tracksuit bottoms for an 11-year-old, which is expensive, he tore them on his first day and I got my Mum to sew them, thankfully.”
He agrees that uniforms should be more cost-effective “across the board”, adding that a number of primary schools are going for “an elaborate bespoke kit by well-known brands” that no one else can replicate.
“These can range in price from £35 to 50, which I would say is very expensive.”
Mr Charlton-Killen, from Crossgar in County Down, said he hoped the bill will provide more flexibility to parents.
“I sell a lot of schoolwear to England and Wales and they are slightly more lenient there in relation to unbranded clothing,” he said.
“It would be ideal if parents here had a choice.”
‘Price through the roof’Janet Ward
Janet Ward from County Down has two children at secondary school
Janet Ward, who runs the ADHD Hub in Newcastle, County Down, said the bill “is a very exciting thing to introduce, as a parent with two secondary school children”.
“The price of uniforms are absolutely through the roof,” she told BBC News NI’s Good Morning Ulster programme.
She said she spent more than £500 each on her children in their first year at secondary school, which included some extra basics like spare shirts.
“I know with PE socks, I have paid £10 plus for items like that, then you have got your shoes and bags and everything on top of that.”
She said her teenage son has sensory needs and that it was important that cost-effective uniform clothing was available for everyone.
Una Johnston, is company secretary of community group Tidal, based in Toomebridge, County Antrim
‘I’ve had mothers in tears’
Meanwhile, Una Johnston who helps run a “pre-loved, re-loved” school uniform scheme in Toomebridge, County Antrim, said the new law is a good idea.
She is the company secretary of the community group, Tidal, that runs the scheme – they have uniforms for eight schools in the area and they’re all free.
Ms Johnston said she has seen the “emotional distress” parents have gone through in trying to acquire uniforms for their children, because of the price.
“It is just not fair, the current price of uniforms,” she said, adding that uniforms should be plain and easy to adapt or maintain.
“I have had mothers in tears, they have bought wee Johnny a brand new blazer for school, and then the next day he has fallen and put the elbow out.
“This law should be brought in sooner, rather than later.”
Keeva Watson is Northern Ireland development manager of Redeeming Our Communities
Keeva Watson, who helps run a similar scheme, echoed those words.
She is Northern Ireland development manager of Redeeming our Communities, which provides free uniform items in seven centres throughout Belfast and Dundonald during the summer months.
She said the “new law is a starting point for making school uniforms affordable for families”.
“Much more will need to be done, as school uniforms continue to be a financial burden for families, particularly in the summer months, when preparing for back to school,” she added.
Fiona Kane, principal of St Ronan’s College in Lurgan, told Good Morning Ulster she recognised that if parents have “multiple children to buy uniforms for it can be extremely expensive”.
She said the authorities need to look at the current uniform grant that’s available to parents, and what it covers.
“Our own uniform policy has items that are compulsory and then items that are optional.
“I’m very pleased with our approach to our PE uniform in that the PE kit is cheaper than branded gear.”
She said she is pro-uniform as it makes it far easier for children “to know every day what they are wearing – it removes those social barriers as well”.
How much do parents spend on school uniforms?
In 2023, a ***-wide report from The Children’s Society found parents were spending about £422 a year on secondary school uniforms and £287 on primary school uniforms.
The Education Authority in Northern Ireland currently spends about £6m a year to support 94,000 pupils, external as part of the uniform grant scheme.
A consultation carried out on the proposed new law attracted about 7,500 responses.
More than three-quarters of respondents were in favour of making school uniforms affordable by law. But there were concerns over whether a “cost cap” on uniforms would work.
How can parents get a school uniform grant?
In Northern Ireland, some families qualify for a one-off payment to help buy school uniforms.
The rates for the 2024-25 school year are:
£42.90 for primary school pupils born on or before 1 July 2020£61.20 for secondary school pupils under 15£67.20 for secondary school pupils aged 15 and over
An additional payment of £26.40 is available for secondary school pupils to help with the cost of PE kits.
There is no grant available for nursery pupils.
Applications can be made online and there is no closing date for the scheme, but payments are not backdated.
Eligibility for the scheme in Northern Ireland can be found on the Education Authority website.

Shire of Broome seeking $600,000 to combat sharp rise in discarded needles
Shire of Broome seeking $600,000 to combat sharp rise in discarded needles
The Shire of Broome says it needs $200,000 a year to collect used needles left in public spaces after council crews reported they were handling more than three times the number of discarded sharps than a year ago.
The council is seeking $600,000 over three years ahead of the State and Federal elections to deal with an alarming increase in syringes found in parks, playgrounds, carparks, schools, drains and recycling bins around Broome.
Minutes from the most recent council meeting reveal the shire’s community cleanup crew had collected significantly more needles last year compared to 2023, recording an increase of more than 300 per cent.
“An increased number of needles have recently been found in public places, which has heightened community concern,” the minutes state.
“Anecdotally, the shire understands there has been a considerable increase (approximately 50 per cent) in the number of needles and syringes handed out through Broome’s NSPs program in the past 12 months.
“The Shire of Broome has advocated for many years to address the issue of needles found in public areas, underscoring the risk posed to staff and the community.
“Shire staff and community members regularly find inappropriately disposed needles in parks, playgrounds, carparks, schools, drains, and recycling receptacles.
“Shire community cleanup crew members regularly visit hotspot locations and pick up discarded needles and syringes. The shire also maintains 30 needle disposal units in public areas.
“The shire’s annual public place bin and little collection service costs approximately $835,000, a considerable cost to the ratepayer.”
The discarded sharps are from Fitpacks which are handed out for free at Broome Hospital through the Needle and Syringe Program. The program aims to reduce people sharing needles and spreading diseases such as **** and AIDS and hepatitis C.
As part of Kimberley Regional Group, the Shire of Broome has listed cleaning up the syringes as one of its priority projects to enhance community safety.
In the KRG’s Federal and State budget submission, ahead of the two elections, the shire has asked for $600,000 over three years to manage the ongoing risk of discarded needles to the public.
The shire has already received a smaller grant of $187,430 grant from the Mental Health Commission to dispose of needles and syringes in Broome.
The grant, which was approved at the December council meeting, will include the installation of needle bins at strategic locations around Broome and the employment of more officers to empty them frequently and pick up discarded sharps.
The State Government has also promised a needle exchange program for Broome, but details on this service and when it will start are yet to be announced.
The shire has noticed a rise in community concern about discarded needles in public places after an eight-year-old girl was pricked in September at a Broome primary school.
Broome mother Natalie Kennedy began actively campaigning after she managed to collect 59 discarded needles from streets and playgrounds.
It was also reported children as young as eight years old were being handed packs of free sterile needles intended for intravenous drug users, prompting calls for age restrictions to the NSP.

BYD founder Wang Chuanfu, fresh from his meeting with Xi Jinping, claims ******** EVs are 3 to 5 years ahead of the competition
BYD founder Wang Chuanfu, fresh from his meeting with Xi Jinping, claims ******** EVs are 3 to 5 years ahead of the competition
Wang Chuanfu, founder of ******** EV giant BYD, got a prime seat at Monday’s meeting with ******** President Xi Jinping, meant to show Beijing’s renewed commitment to its beleaguered tech sector. The ******** carmaker has gone from strength to strength in recent years, becoming China’s top car seller, prying open overseas markets, and running neck and neck with Tesla in being the world’s top EV maker.
********-made electric vehicles have gained ground in overseas markets in recent years, particularly in markets like Mexico, Malaysia, or Thailand.
One reason is cost: ******** cars are often priced far more competitively than their Japanese, South Korean, or European-developed competition. Yet ******** EV makers also claim they succeed because their products are just more innovative.
In a Monday interview with ******** state broadcaster CCTV, Wang estimated that ******** EVs are three to five years ahead of their foreign competition.
Wang spoke after a meeting with President Xi Jinping and several other prominent business executives, including Alibaba founder Jack Ma.
The BYD founder called the company’s talent its most important asset. “Behind each of our technologies is innovation … and behind each of our technologies is the hard work of 110,000 engineers,” Wang said.
Analysts have previously noted the speed at which BYD’s vehicles rapidly approached the technological sophistication of leaders like Tesla—yet at a reduced cost. “We were shocked at how fast BYD has caught up,” Paul Gong, executive director of auto research at UBS, said at a Fortune conference last year.
Wang claimed “openness” would allow the rest of the world to enjoy ********-made electric vehicles.
Several non-******** automakers, including those that long dominated the ******** market, have struggled to keep pace with the offerings put out by China’s EV makers.
China bet on EVs in the early 2010s, showering both manufacturers and consumers with subsidies. That state support has irked foreign governments, particularly in the U.S. and Europe, who accuse China of fostering overproduction of EVs and dumping them in overseas markets. Last year, the European Union imposed tariffs on ******** EVs after alleging that prices were “kept artificially low by huge state subsidies.”
In response, ******** EV makers argue that their low costs are the result of innovative manufacturing and management practices, rather than state support.
Analysts point out that Beijing’s early support created hundreds of new companies. Fierce competition forced carmakers to find ways to innovate to try to stand out while bringing down costs—especially as Beijing began to withdraw its subsidies.
Story Continues
For example, BYD developed its own “blade” battery that does not rely on nickel, which the company claims is safer. Nio, another ******** EV startup, has tried to pioneer battery swapping for its cars in mainland China.
Carmakers, including new entrants like Xiaomi, are now rushing to offer autonomous features in a bid to get an edge in a fiercely competitive ******** auto market.
Last week, BYD announced it would include its assisted driving features across more of its lineup, including the sub-$10,000 Seagull. While BYD’s systems aren’t “industry-leading,” they provide “a buffer against intense price competition,” Morningstar analyst Vincent Sun wrote on Wednesday.

Wendy Williams moved to memory unit at assisted living facility after getting drunk at lunch: report
Wendy Williams moved to memory unit at assisted living facility after getting drunk at lunch: report
Wendy Williams was transferred to the memory unit of her assisted living facility after allegedly getting drunk at the facility’s restaurant, according to a new report.
The beloved talk show host’s dementia diagnosis, however, does not appear to have played a part in the move, TMZ reported on Tuesday.
Wendy Williams as seen in the Lifetime docuseries “Where Is Wendy Williams?” Lifetime
Williams allegedly became intoxicated in the early days of her stay when she had lunch at the facility’s top-floor restaurant and bar.
Supervisors were reportedly furious when they learned that the daytime star, who allegedly stayed at the restaurant for a long time, was served alcohol.
Currently in her eighth month at the facility, Williams allegedly became intoxicated in the early days of her stay when she had lunch at the facility’s top-floor restaurant and bar. Felipe Ramales / SplashNews.com
An employee at the facility told TMZ that supervisors then decided to relocate the former “Wendy Williams Show” host to the facility’s fifth-floor memory unit, where she would not have unrestricted access to the elevator and, by extension, the restaurant and bar.
The memory ward, however, was full, which allegedly led facility bosses to station employees outside Williams’ third-floor room to restrict her movements while they waited for another to become available on Floor 5.
Staff reportedly told Williams that the restaurant was under construction and not open, according to TMZ.

A few days after the incident at the restaurant, a spot on the fifth floor opened up and Williams was moved there, where she has been ever since.
Of the star’s memory, an employee at the facility told TMZ, “Wendy doesn’t have good and bad days. She’s the same all the time.”
They added: “You can tell her something today and 2 weeks later she’ll remember it. Her memory is fine.”
The Post reached out to Williams’ lawyers, who declined to comment.

Williams has been under guardianship since 2022. She was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia and aphasia the following year.
The daytime talk show queen’s guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, said last November that Williams “has become cognitively impaired, permanently disabled, and incapacitated” from her dementia battle.
In a recent documentary titled “TMZ Presents: Saving Wendy,” the former New York radio shock jock said the facility is more like a “prison.” Williams also claimed she’s only been outside twice in the past 30 days.
“No, no. I am not allowed to go out. I can call you, but you can’t call me,” she told Harvey Levin. “In the last 30 days, I went out twice.”
The former host has insisted she doesn’t have dementia, and reportedly filed paperwork to end her guardianship and has requested a new medical evaluation.

It’s Over If Joe Rogan Gets Obsessed With Population 1 After Spending Tens of Thousands of Dollars to Play Quake
It’s Over If Joe Rogan Gets Obsessed With Population 1 After Spending Tens of Thousands of Dollars to Play Quake
Joe Rogan’s obsession with gaming is public knowledge at this point since he reiterates the same point time and again in his podcasts. He used to be a big fan of the Quake series and spent a lot of money during the early 2000s to ramp up his internet connection so that he could perform well in the game.
Joe Rogan is one of the most famous podcasters in the world. Image Credit: The Joe Rogan Experience
Now, with the emerging trend of VR gaming, especially Population 1, which is a battle royale, there might be a chance that he might now get sucked into the VR vortex and if he does, he will do so with full dedication.
Joe Rogan has admitted to getting addicted to video games
Quake was Rogan’s biggest weakness. Image Credit: id Software
Rogan has had problems with dealing with game addiction during the early years of his life. He sees video games as a great source of adrenaline. He was a big Quake player back in the day and got sucked into it even more after trying out the online version.
He feels that life in itself is too boring when compared to the exciting lives that one gets to experience while playing video games. He is also a tech – enthusiast who talks a lot about tech advancements and how they can affect our day-to-day lives, including the technological revolution of video games. During one of his podcasts, Rogan said:
When I am playing video games, i am just absorbed in this like adrenaline fueled chaos of graphics and sounds and explosions, it’s just way too good, that’s the problem, you don’t wanna do anything else.
VR seems to be the next big thing in video games and there are already some online games available on the platform including Population 1. It is very easy to get sucked into the vortex of competitive online games and the chances just increase when you are presented with even more immersion via a VR kit.
Especially for someone like Rogan who already has had a history of getting hooked on to games fast. Population 1 could hook someone like him since he enjoys immersive experiences.
Joe Rogan has an intense all-in personality
Population 1 is an up-and-coming VR battle royale. Image Credit: BigBox VR, Inc.
Rogan has spent thousands of dollars to make a high-end Quake setup just to relive the experience of playing that game which is a clear indicator of his intense approach toward doing anything that he finds interest in. He is also a big advocate of video games.
If somehow Rogan finds his way into the VR world, it might attract more people to it as well, since he has a huge fan following. His influence and contribution could even push for more VR gaming advancements in the future.
Given his intense all-in approach towards anything that he does, if and when he decides to join the VR club, it is over for him. He might become a victim to the adrenaline rushes and high-quality immersion that this up-and-coming tech offers. What do you think about it? Let us know in the comments below.

Who is Friedrich Merz, the favorite to become Germany’s new chancellor?
Who is Friedrich Merz, the favorite to become Germany’s new chancellor?

Friedrich Merz, migration hardliner and longtime rival of Angela Merkel, is expected to become Germany’s next chancellor. His party the Christian Democratic Union is leading polls alongside its affiliate the Christian Social Union just days before the election.
Back in September, Merz was elected as the CDU’s party’s designated candidate for chancellor in this year’s federal elections, after leading the organization and heading the opposition CDU-CSU parliamentary group since 2022. The CSU is a regional party which has dominated Bavarian politics for decades and forms a union with the CDU at a federal level.
Between politics and business
Before entering politics, Merz, 69, studied law and first worked as a judge, then as a lawyer at Mayer Brown LLP. He has also held senior positions at various major corporations, including BlackRock Germany and HSBC Trinkaus & Burkhardt, as well as serving on the boards of EY Germany, Borussia Dortmund and the Deutsche Börse.
Merz is married with three children. He reportedly owns two airplanes, which he pilots in his spare time.
Merz says that he joined the CDU when he was still in school, eventually leading the local branch of the party’s youth organization. In 1989 he took on the role of member of the European Parliament for a five-year tenure before joining Germany’s Bundestag for 15 years.
Much of Merz’s political career in the early 2000s was marked by a rivalry with Angela Merkel, with the two vying for leadership positions in the CDU as well as of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. Merz first became chair and then deputy head of the latter group after 2000.
He resigned from this position in 2004, with observers at the time suggesting this was due to Merkel’s rise through the ranks.

Tensions between Merkel and Merz linger to this day, with the former ******* chancellor last month criticizing the CDU leader for cooperating with the far-right Alternative fuer Deutschland on parliamentary votes.
Policy positions
Merz, like the CDU, follows center-right policy positions and is seen as a socially conservative, pro-business politician.
Merz has advocated for lowering taxes on incomes and for corporations, alongside cutting bureaucratic red tape to boost businesses and innovation and adapting the framework conditions for industry in Germany to boost private investment. He has also shared his goal to make Germany more attractive for startups and has said that he would create a new ministerial role to focus on digitalization and AI.
The CDU leader has also indicated that he would potentially be open to reforming Germany’s highly contested debt brake rule, which limits how much debt the government can take on and restricts the federal government’s structural budget deficit.
Merz has been highly critical of economic policies under Olaf Scholz’ government, suggesting that they are the cause of the country’s slump and calling for big shifts.
This stance has included criticism about economic policies focusing too much on climate change, which Merz says he will change. While he broadly recognizes the climate crisis as an issue, Merz has been skeptical about some actions taken to tackle it, for example building wind turbines.
On the foreign policy front, Merz suggested during last weekend’s Munich Security Conference that Germany should take on a stronger leadership position within the Europe and said that the war in Ukraine must soon come to an end, while indicating that he would be open to further weapon deliveries to the embattled country.
Merz has however broadly dodged questions about plans for Germany’s defense spending amid the debate about whether NATO members should boost their funding in this area.
A policy issue that has gotten Merz into hot water is immigration. He has advocated for heightened security measures, increased deportations and shaper border controls, criticizing Germany’s current asylum and migration policies for being too relaxed and slow moving and linking them to violent attacks carried out in the country by people due to be deported.
The situation came to a head in January, when a non-binding motion spearheaded by Merz was backed by the AfD — marking the first time in Germany’s post-war history that a majority was achieved with the help of the far right.

Dave Ramsey says he can 100% tell who will stay middle-class by looking at the cars they drive
Dave Ramsey says he can 100% tell who will stay middle-class by looking at the cars they drive
Dave Ramsey, a personal finance guru and radio host, says he can tell who will stay paycheck-to-paycheck by the cars parked in front of their modest homes. His money advice could help Americans, who are $1.66 trillion deep in auto debt.
Driveways decked out with Audis and Porches may be a smokescreen for the actual financial situation of their owners, according to one financial expert.
“The way you know someone is going to stay middle-class is when they have two very nice cars that are obviously $500, $600, $700 payments, sitting in front of a middle-class house,” Dave Ramsey, personal financial expert and radio host, said on his show last year. “One hundred percent, those people are going to stay middle-class until they break that habit. It’s a huge indicator.”
Many Americans are struggling with money management, and Ramsey often takes calls with his 3.88 million YouTube listeners who are in a pinch. If there’s one thing he espouses above all else, it’s that people shouldn’t be living outside of their means. While he thinks it’s perfectly okay for a billionaire to drive off the lot with a brand-new Mercedes, the average worker shouldn’t.
“One of the guidelines we’ve developed here is to not have more than half your annual income tied up in things that have motors and wheels,” Ramsey said. “We tell folks not to buy a brand-new car until you have a net worth of a million dollars. If you do have a car, you should sell it if it violates those things.”
Instead, he suggests that middle-class earners should buy used cars. Otherwise, they would have too many assets sinking in value while they’re already financially struggling. Ramsey refers to nice cars as “toys,” and says that they should be out of the question until they hit that seven-figure status.
And Ramsey has a point—missed car loans and other forms of consumer debt are dragging working Americans into sticky situations.
Many people in the U.S. are deep in debt—so much so, that the nation’s household debt ballooned to $18.04 trillion in the third quarter of 2024. And auto debt has continued to worsen.
“While mortgage delinquency rates are similar to pre-pandemic levels, auto loan delinquency transition rates remain elevated,” Wilbert van der Klaauw, economic research advisor at the New York Federal Reserve, said in a press release. “High auto loan delinquency rates are broad-based across credit scores and income levels.”
American auto-loan balances increased by $11 billion in the fourth quarter of 2024, standing at $1.66 trillion in total. And when it comes to serious delinquency—when a borrower is 90 days behind or more in payments—the numbers are rising with auto loans and credit card debt. About 2.96% of loans flowed into serious delinquency in the third quarter of 2024, compared to 2.66% in the third quarter the year prior. Americans are falling deeper into debt—and it’s hurt their ability to climb out of a financial hole.

How Meghan Markle rebranded from burger-flipping seductress to wholesome Netflix luxury lifestyle guru
How Meghan Markle rebranded from burger-flipping seductress to wholesome Netflix luxury lifestyle guru
Food influencers come in many different forms.
One might throw on a pair of denim hotpants with a shirt unbuttoned to the bra and lick her fingers suggestively while flipping burgers.
Another might dress in refined cream cashmere and sprinkle edible flowers onto pure white icing while chatting with A-list friends.
The surprise though, is that these two might be one and the same person: Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, whose cooking and entertaining Netflix show – With Love, Meghan – starts streaming on March 4.
Her new lifestyle brand As Ever, formerly American Riviera Orchard, will go live on a website at around the same time.
A dozen years certainly has changed Meghan.
The denim phase dates back to a sex-drenched video for the magazine brand Men’s Health, in which the newly-minted star of TV series Suits discussed whether she would have sex outdoors (‘I would say yea,’ she giggled) and shared her food tips, including the rather basic “hack” of adding a dollop of shopbought hot sriracha sauce to shopbought ketchup.
Back then, Meghan was prized for her physical perfection.
“Grilling never looked so hot” was how the Men’s Health website described her performance in the video which was released in 2013.
But maybe that video started something.
It was around the same time that she first considered launching a “foodie” website that would help burnish her image.
It was to be called “Spoon me, Fork me” – a vulgar piece of provocation which she thankfully had second thoughts about.
Camera IconThe Duchess of Sussex shares cooking, gardening and hosting tips In Love, Meghan. (AP PHOTO) Credit: AAP
Instead, the following year she moved into her fedoras-andtapas “Eat, Pray, Love” phase with the launch of her blog, The Tig.
This was a more sophisticated affair all round, talking about acai bowls and eating salt cod fritters on the Caribbean island of St Barts; the actress Men’s Health droolingly dubbed the “ultimate guys’ girl” had relaunched herself as a stylish, well-connected and cultured feminist.
Meghan the budding Instagram influencer shared many recipes over the three years of The Tig.
There was an emphasis on burgers and cheese – and an enthusiasm for “motherf***ing fantastic crave-worthy food” which seems slightly surprising now.
For, in her reboot, the Insta-girl who swooned over street food has become the quintessential, sophisticated hostess, who wafts around a well-ordered garden carrying a trug of perfect salad vegetables, and then pours her own candles.
Today, she’s “in pursuit of joy” with other millionaires, or millionaires’ wives, and it’s all about the detail – tiny mint leaves arranged just-so and swirls of fruit in ice cubes.
In the trailer for With Love, Meghan, she says: “I’ve always loved taking something pretty ordinary and elevating it. Surprising people with moments that let them know I was really thinking of them.”
According to a source who has seen the Netflix series, it’s not a collection of recipes but leans into the lifestyle and the how-to of hostessing.

As we prepare to get to know Meghan the Foodie part III, the fact is that there is rather more to her culinary journey than many realise.
Her first solo project on joining the Royal Family was championing a collection of recipes she cooked alongside women made homeless by the Grenfell Tower fire. Meghan made an official visit to the Hubb Community Kitchen in January 2018.
Later that year, in a foreword to Together: Our Community Cookbook, featuring recipes from across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, she wrote about discovering at the Hubb “a place for women to laugh, grieve cry and cook together”.
Reminiscing about her childhood, she added that one of her favourite meals was “collard greens, ******-eyed peas and cornbread… the smell of yellow onions simmering amongst a slow-cooked pot of greens from my grandma’s back garden”.
Years before she met Prince Harry, Meghan discussed producing a cookbook of her own with a US literary agency.
Renowned agent Jonathan Shalit tells me that he remembers discussing a possible cookery and travel show with Meghan, whom he found “utterly charming” when she was visiting London.
Shalit says he doesn’t doubt she could have created the show but her Suits contract didn’t permit time for ideas to develop.
“We discussed cooking shows among other projects. She was very charming,” he said.
So how did Meghan, the kitchen chameleon, end up on a Netflix show wearing Loro Piana cashmere in her trademark neutral colours, dripping in $260,000 worth of jewellery by Cartier and others?
She says she has always been a “foodie”
In her early years, she would go on fishing trips with her father Thomas – at that point her beloved North Star – catfish which they caught.
Raised in middle-class comfort in LA, where Thomas worked as a lighting director and her mother Doria worked for an airline and had a gift shop, Meghan remembers making salads with her mum and having McDonald’s as a regular treat when they took road trips.
She has also talked about visiting the $4.99 all-you-can-eat salad bar at Sizzler, saying it was all they could afford. (Thomas, who won $750,000 in the California State lottery in 1990, when Meghan was nine, said that this was a misrepresentation and that she had never wanted for anything.)
Whatever the truth about that, her appreciation of food and eating out seems to have accelerated when she joined Suits in 2011.
As she recalls on The Tig, she lived in New York for a ******* while making the pilot and developed a great love for the city and its vibrant culinary culture.
She enthuses over ramen restaurants and pizza joints in her blog.
By this point, she was dating film producer Trevor Engelson.
They married in 2011 but their diverging ambitions and Meghan’s new life in Canada, where Suits was filmed, meant that they split just two years later.
The Tig was launched in 2014, with Meghan by now firmly a star of Suits and based in Toronto.
It reflected her passions for food, fashion and travel and good works, and was named after the red wine, Tiganello.
The blog – a “hub for the discerning palate, those with a hunger for food, travel, fashion & beauty” – disappeared in 2017 after she and Harry got engaged, but some fans have archived it and it makes for fascinating reading.
Meghan returns repeatedly to her love of burgers.
“I am a hamburger loving fool”, she writes in 2014.
Later that year she talks about the burger and fries at Harbord restaurant.
“It remains my most craved meal.”
The chef at that restaurant, Cory Vitiello, was by this point more than just the man who cooked the best burgers in town – he was her boyfriend.
Omid Scobie, whose book about Megxit is thought to be part-authorised by Meghan, said: “She was a passionate foodie and cook before meeting him but he opened up her eyes to food on a whole different level.”
She spent Christmas of 2015 with his family, who were convinced that they would soon be engaged but, says Scobie, the romance ended in May 2016 because Vitiello didn’t want to settle down. (He is now happily partnered with singer songwriter Martina Sorbara and they have a son, Barlow.)
Camera IconMeghan shares a moment with Guy. Credit: Meghan/IG
The food Meghan champions on the Tig curiously isn’t particularly sophisticated.
It tends to be either other people’s recipes or very simple acts of food assembly, like acai berry bowls or a tortilla soup made with leftover turkey.
There appears to be little effort at originality but, like so many influencers of the time, a lot of emphasis on gimmicky, good looking dishes.
Hence her 2015 recipe – from cookery writer Ruth Reichl – for pumpkin fondue which is, as she says, “fondue that is lit’rally baked in a pumpkin”.
She adds: “I call it the best f***ing thing I’ve ever eaten.”
Another recipe is credited to actor Stanley Tucci’s cookbook.
Meghan suggests serving Cornish game hens for Thanksgiving and says: “They are simply small broiler chickens that take very little time to cook, and will delight your guests as you can offer them a serving of one per person (so fun, right?)“
She is actually quite careful not to make great claims about her cooking skills, and when sharing a recipe for pasta admits that this is the first time she has ever made fresh pasta herself.
Meghan writes: “I think a ‘foodie’ is really just someone who not only loves but also appreciates the art and skill that goes in to making good food… and to making good food great.
“And that, for me, can be a Michelin star meal, or as with today’s BestBite, a simple plate of food that makes you close your eyes as you eat it so as to not be distracted by anything else in the world.”
What a foodie is not, according to this description, is someone particularly accomplished at actually cooking.
However, according to Omid Scobie, by 2016 Meghan was confident enough in her vision and in the success of The Tig to talk to a US literary agency about writing a “food focused book”.
Fate took a hand that summer, when she stopped off in London and was set up on a blind date with Prince Harry.
Now, after the wedding, the kids and Megxit, she is returning to the kitchen and to her great skill at presenting an inspirational lifestyle vision.
There seems to be a fair bit of cake-making with friends which is a surprise as a few years ago she explained that she didn’t enjoy baking.
“There’s something about the technicality of it that stifles my inner rebel; no dash of this or extra spoonful of that. There’s a science to baking and the measurements matter ever so much,” she said.
But, when it comes to this kitchen chameleon, the only rule seems to be that those artfully curated passions and tastes are always subject to change.

Provo fire marshal reveals cause of ‘catastrophic’ Stadium of Fire firework explosion
Provo fire marshal reveals cause of ‘catastrophic’ Stadium of Fire firework explosion
PROVO, Utah (ABC4) — The Provo City fire marshal revealed the cause of the July 4th firework malfunction that led to dozens of injuries during the Stadium of Fire event last year.
Last Independence Day, fireworks shot into the crowd at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo injuring at least 27 audience members, six of which received treatment at a hospital. On Wednesday, Feb. 19, Fire Marshal Lynn Schofield revealed the cause of the “catastrophic” incident and suggestions to prevent this from ever happening again.
PREVIOUS STORY: Fireworks launch into crowd at Stadium of Fire, 6 taken to the hospital
Schofield said out of the 36 firework tubes, 22 tubes went “where they weren’t supposed to go,” many spinning on the south stands and others launching into the crowd. He said four people were directly hit, and others were injured by shrapnel or experienced hearing loss from being in close proximity to the explosions.
After a full investigation, Schofield said he determined “there was no mishandling of these devices anywhere along the line,” rather the issue stemmed from an internal manufacturing fault in the fireworks that could not be seen from the outside.
Investigators used an X-ray to examine two of the tubes and determined something went wrong with the “whistle composition” causing the fireworks to explode sideways.

In the full report, the whistle composition is described as “a highly energetic pyrotechnic mixture” that’s pressed into the plastic tube. The fuel mixture provides thrust when it’s ignited, but if it becomes powdery or the whistle tube cracks “the flame front has a larger surface area to act upon and the remaining mixture will explode.”
Investigators found parts of the whistle composition on a couple of audience members, including one who was hospitalized after being struck in the head. The report said investigators discovered fragments of the whistle in the victim’s hair and “embedded in the victim’s forehead.”
While these devices have been used dozens of times at the Stadium of Fire event over the years, Schofield said this will no longer be the case, saying, “You will never see a whistle inside of the stadium as long as I’m the fire marshal.”
“No one intended for this to happen, no one is happy that this has happened, and we will learn from this,” Schofield said.
Schofield provided a list of suggestions to prevent future incidents, starting with better product labeling and increasing the safe distance between fireworks and people. The accepted radius is 140 feet wide, however, all but one victim in this incident were between 400 and 600 feet away. For that reason, he calls for the safety radius to be increased to 800 feet.
After interviewing the entire pyrotechnic crew in Utah and Colorado, he said there needs to be “more stringent and documented safety briefings” for everyone on the crew.
One of his final recommendations includes creating a clearinghouse where officials can report firework incidents and investigation results to minimize firework risks as a national database does not currently exist.
“Fireworks are wonderful … but they are, at the end of the day, still explosive devices,” Schofield concluded.
The full report can be found on Provo City’s website here.

Unlike GTA 6, Bethesda Finally Has an Update for Elder Scrolls 6 but in an Unexpected Way
Elder Scrolls fans can put their curiosity to rest since Bethesda has found an interesting way to engage with its player community while shedding light on the upcoming Elder Scrolls 6.
This is the first update about Elder Scrolls 6 after years of anticipation. Image Credit: Bethesda
Unlike Rockstar which has not shared anything about its upcoming GTA 6, Bethesda has opted for a unique approach to give updates, moving away from the conventional path of trailers and interviews. Instead, it will be conducting a silent auction benefiting a charitable organization Make A Wish Mid-Atlantic.
Elder Scrolls 6 will let you design an NPC

Bethesda is giving one lucky player the opportunity to customize and design an NPC in the game through their charitable silent auction initiative which not only builds excitement and anticipation but also adds massive emotional value due to it being attached to a charitable cause.
This is the first public update about ES6 after a long time and players are already excited to know more. This update also indicates that the game is indeed in development and will soon be hitting the market. Earlier there were speculations about the game being delayed inevitably.
The way Bethesda seems to be communicating with its player community is a unique approach and adds a sense of mystery to the game’s progress. This unconventional way of building anticipation might just work in its favor in the long run. People have a lot of expectations from Bethesda to improve upon the most celebrated features in Skyrim.

Bethesda has adapted to a unique approach for giving updates about Elder Scrolls 6, which is a highly anticipated game that had gone radio silent for many years. The recently release Avowed is a direct competitor of ES6.
The recent update breathes fresh air into the lungs of its fans as they can now expect the game to be released sooner than expected. This might just be a start to the game’s marketing campaign and players might be seeing a lot more of the game soon. Bethesda is yet to release things of more substance like a gameplay or story trailer
Elder Scrolls 6 seems to be going in the right direction and if things stay the way they are, the game might soon be able to see the light of day. What do you think about it? Let us know in the comments below.

Southport victim ‘born to be a star’, say parents fundraising for memorial stage
Southport victim ‘born to be a star’, say parents fundraising for memorial stage

The parents of Alice da Silva Aguiar said she loved the performing arts and going to school
The parents of one of the girls killed at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport last year have told the BBC their daughter was “born to be a star”.
Alice da Silva Aguiar, who was nine when she died, began dancing when she was 16 months old and her parents are fundraising for a new playground which will include a stage.
Looking over architect’s drawings of the proposal during an interview with BBC Breakfast, her mother Alex said: “[The stage] would be her favourite part.”
In the family’s first TV interview, Alice’s father Sergio said he would be running the London Marathon to raise funds for the playground. They plan to build it at Churchtown Primary School, where Alice was a pupil.
He said his daughter loved going there and enjoyed reading. An outdoor library is part of the proposals, along with a trim trail track, den-building area and the stage.
“The school was the place where she spent most of her time and she was really happy [here],” said Alex.
Watch: Sergio and Alex remember their daughter Alice as they look at plans for a new playground at her school
“She loved it. For us it’s really important to make this [project] happen. She would be happy, I’m sure she’s proud of us.”
The BBC accompanied the couple as they visited the Southport school for the first time since their daughter’s death.
Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Bebe King, six, were also killed in the attack carried out by Axel Rudakubana who was last month jailed for a minimum of 52 years for their murders.
Sergio said: “If you ask the people who met her, no-one [saw] her in a mood. No matter what happened, she would always have a smile.”
Alice’s favourite teacher feels the same way.
“That really was Alice in a nutshell,” said Alan Bowen. “That beaming smile, all the time.”
He taught her when she was in Year 3 and said it was always a pleasant surprise to find out you were someone’s favourite teacher.
“I’ve been teaching for more than 20 years… sometimes something clicks,” he told the BBC. “You see a lightbulb in some children and you just get them, and I think Alice got me and I got Alice.”
Family handout
Alan Bowen, who was Alice’s favourite teacher, said her beaming smile was “her in a nutshell”
Speaking about the plans for the stage in the new playground, he said: “Every single minute of every single play time and break time, she’d [have been] on that stage.
“And she wouldn’t just be on the stage dancing, she’d be getting people involved. They’d be doing dance routines; they’d be having songs; they’d have microphones… she’d be on the stage directing everything that was going on.”
He explained several of Alice’s schoolfriends were also keen on singing, dancing and amateur dramatics.
“I would use that quote from A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” he said of her. “‘Though she be but little, she is fierce.'”
The plans for the playground include a pergoda and a memorial carved into a beam dedicating the facility to Alice and Bebe, who also previously attended the school.
The plans were revealed to the schoolchildren just before the half-term holiday and some recorded their reactions on video, which were shown to Alice’s parents.
“I love the remembrance post about our friend Alice,” one child said. “I like the [planned] quiet corner because I like to draw and just have some time on my own, sometimes. Thank you so much, please make it happen.”
Sergio won’t be on his own when he runs the marathon on 27 April. Joining him will be the school’s head teacher Jinnie Payne.
Family handout
Alice began dancing at 16-months-old and was enrolled by her mother at baby ballet classes
She said the playground would be a symbol of how they celebrate the lives of the victims.
“I think it is really important. For the children, it’s joy, it’s fun, it’s positivity,” she told the BBC. “It’s our forward motion, our next step.”
Though what struck her recently was how the wider community were going to help build this project, rather than being led by an individual or single institution.
“We’re all going to help to build this and when you do something together – that feeling of togetherness, of community – that will bring the positivity that we need.”
She and Sergio are being prepared for their marathon effort by a personal trainer whose daughter walked to school with Alice everyday.
Other parents and staff at the school will also be running to raise money, whether it be at the London Marathon or the closer Blackpool festival of running. They are aiming to raise £250,000 for the project.
The flowerbeds near the entrance have been replanted by local volunteers – they contain some of the commemorative flowers and plants left outside the school following Alice’s death.
In the eulogy given at her ******** last August, Alex and Sergio paid tribute to the “wonderful community” who had supported them.
Ms Payne also spoke to the congregation and told them one of the school’s teachers had named her baby in Alice’s memory, a moment that appeared to deeply move her mother.
Asked by the BBC what she thought of when remembering her daughter, Alex said: “Happiness, kindness – everything good.”
