Astrophotographer Captures Milky Way Over Easter Island’s Moai During Eclipse Astrophotographer Captures Milky Way Over Easter Island’s Moai During Eclipse A remarkable image of the Milky Way’s swirling colours over Easter Island’s famed Moai statues was captured recently by photographer Josh Dury, a seasoned astrophotographer and contributor to Space.com. During his trip to Easter Island for last month’s annular solar eclipse, Dury took advantage of the island’s pristine night sky to photograph the ancient statues beneath a brilliant stretch of the Milky Way, showcasing a unique connection between the island’s historical culture and the universe above. This image, titled Aringa Ora O Te Tupuna or The Living Face of the Ancestors, was shared on social media and subsequently recognised by NASA as an Astronomy Photo of the Day (APOD). Stunning Night Sky Above Iconic Moai Statues The Moai statues, some of which are over twice the height of an average human and weigh up to 12,700 kilograms, stand as ancient figures on the remote island, renowned for its exceptionally dark skies, far from urban light pollution. During his stay, Dury, supported by island residents, positioned his camera to capture a composition that framed the statues with the Milky Way. The shot, in addition to its artistic merit, is seen as a tribute to the islanders and the ancestral legacy of the Rapa Nui people. A Photographer’s Tribute to Culture and Science Dury described the experience as one of the most emotionally significant of his career, dedicating the photograph to both the island’s people and its ancestors. In a statement about the image’s title, he explained that the phrase, in the native Rapa Nui language, represents a bridge between art, science the cultural importance of astronomy to the island’s inhabitants. 3. Father and Daughter Decode Mysterious Signal From Space: What Does It Mean? Father and Daughter Decode Mysterious Signal From Space: What Does It Mean? A simulated extraterrestrial message sent from Mars to Earth in 2023 was decoded in June by Ken Chaffin and his daughter, Keli Chaffin, through nearly a year of persistent efforts. Created as part of “A Sign in Space” project by the SETI Institute, the message displays five formations of amino acids, though its meaning ******** unclear. Daniela de Paulis, SETI’s artist-in-residence and a licensed radio operator, designed the project with other international scientists and artists to explore what an alien signal might resemble. Signal Reception and Decoding Process In May 2023, the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter transmitted a signal intended to simulate an alien message. This was captured by three Earth-based observatories: the Allen Telescope Array in California, the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, and the Medicina Radio Astronomical Station in Italy. Released online, the raw data allowed citizen scientists worldwide to engage in decoding efforts through a community forum. Decoding required the Chaffins to use cellular automata algorithms on what appeared to be a “starmap” of white pixels, eventually revealing clusters representing amino acids. Interpreting the Message The Chaffins’ discovery is confirmed by the project team to represent amino acids, essential molecules in life forms. However, no interpretation has been provided for why these particular configurations might have been chosen. De Paulis and her team maintain that understanding the message’s intent is left to those examining it, in part to mimic a real-life scenario of receiving an alien transmission without guidance. Open Interpretation and Ongoing Exploration This simulation invites global citizen scientists to theorise about the message’s significance. Speculations range from life-forming compounds assembling in space to a simple extraterrestrial greeting. De Paulis plans to document public interpretations in a forthcoming book, recognising the difficulty in reaching a universal consensus on its meaning. Ken and Keli Chaffin, while uncertain about the precise intent, have voiced enthusiasm over their role in exploring this unique cosmic message. 6. Mitchell Johnson: How Virat Kohli changed the face of Indian cricket as the game’s next big thing Mitchell Johnson: How Virat Kohli changed the face of Indian cricket as the game’s next big thing When Virat Kohli first came on the scene, I remember hearing about him before I saw him. Many were saying he was the next Sachin Tendulkar, even though we all knew Sachin could never be replaced. I was fortunate enough to play against both Indian legends in all formats and while there are some similarities, they were also very different. One of Kohli’s attributes stood out early to me above all others – he was up for the ******! That kind of aggressive attitude was something we had rarely seen from an Indian player at that point. We were used to giving it but didn’t always get it back in return. While the occasional player from India may have been combative in moments, Kohli really made it a part of his game. He took his team with him as well so it’s not an understatement to say that Kohli changed the face of Indian cricket, taking a new generation of players and showing them how to play tough cricket. Camera IconVirat Kohli and Mitchell Johnson. Credit: Scott Barbour/Getty Images I remember hearing at the back end of Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag’s careers, a young Kohli would push his teammates to go ******* at training, particularly with fielding drills. He would train like he played and pushed players around him to get better. Kohli was demanding but he is one of those players you want in your team because he has your back and that is important in team sports. I could sense a difference in the Indian team I played against in 2014/15, my last full Aussie summer before I retired from international cricket the following November. They were competitive and confident they could beat us at home and while they didn’t do it that summer, won 2-0 by Australia over four Tests, that was the last time the Aussies have won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Indian team now speak in the media with confidence, even arrogance – though not in a bad way. The Kohli way has rubbed off on many of his teammates across his long career and he has set up the future as well. I had a well-publicised personal rivalry with Kohli. We had many interactions on the field and I enjoyed it. While I didn’t know him off the field, on the field we probably played the game in a similar way – taking the game on and not backing down. Some don’t like that style of cricket and prefer there’s no chat with the opposition, but I enjoyed that part of the game. I would become frustrated during some of our battles, but I also enjoyed that he kept coming at me. It’s always a nice feeling to get one of the best out, and likewise, I’m sure he enjoyed taking me down and hitting me for a four or a six. Most of our differences stemmed from the Boxing Day Test in 2014, when a ball I threw hit him on the body. I was legitimately trying to run him out but he didn’t like what I did. He made some comments in the media that night about having no respect for me as a player, which annoyed me. The goal from our point of view was generally to get Kohli riled up as soon as he came out to bat and take his focus away from his skills. Get him annoyed and get him playing a big shot early. I wonder if the situation will give him all the determination he needs or if it will all be too much for him. In that Test match at the MCG we got him off guard early and had him playing at a ball he didn’t need to in frustration and unfortunately we dropped him on not many. He then focussed and harnessed his energy and piled on the runs – all 169 of them. When bowling to him, I can remember thinking we had to get him early or else we could be in trouble. If you didn’t get Kohli in the first 10 or so ******, he would often make you pay. I also remember the cover drives, the pull shots and the urgency of his running between wickets. One of the best players in the world playing me with so much time, I think I even said ‘good shot’ in my head a few times after being driven down the ground. The 36-year-old is most likely in Australia for the final time on a Test tour. It’s a place he’s done well. He averages 54.08 in Australia – higher than his career average of 47.83 and few batsmen around the world can say that. His form hasn’t been at its best recently and he will be under pressure to perform again here in front of the many Indian fans who will turn out. Camera IconKohli during a WACA warm-up match this week. Credit: Ian Munro/The West *********** I wonder if the situation will give him all the determination he needs or if it will all be too much for him. As a fan now watching on, maybe I’d like to see him make one more Test ton in Australia. As his adversary from a decade ago, maybe not. Ultimately, I want to see the best against the best and a series played with all the ***** and urgency that has come to mark this great rivalry. And I know that’s where Virat will feel right at home. 7. Japan’s Mount Fuji eyes China-made tram to transport hikers, source says Japan’s Mount Fuji eyes China-made tram to transport hikers, source says By Mariko Katsumura TOKYO (Reuters) – ********* authorities seeking to reduce the carbon footprint and overcrowding at Mount Fuji will propose a trackless, rubber-tyred tram system made by China’s CRRC to transport climbers, a person with direct knowledge of the plan said. The new proposal, which has not been previously reported, would replace the original plan to build a light-rail system connecting the base to the fifth hiking station of the popular Yoshida Trail to the top after a local city and other parties, voiced concern over its environmental and cost impact. Yamanashi Prefecture, home of the most popular route used by climbers of the 3,776-metre (12,3388-foot) volcano, is set to announce the plan soon, the person told Reuters, asking for anonymity because the information is not yet public. Mount Fuji, which straddles Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Japan, whose numbers have surged in recent years. Pollution from the constant stream of tourist buses and cars arriving at the fifth station, as well as overcrowding on the trails, have become headaches for authorities seeking to clean up the site, which ********* people hold sacred. Mount Fuji was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2013, further boosting its appeal. But the distinction came on the condition that Japan reduce overcrowding, environmental harm from visitors, and fix the artificial landscape, such as the large parking lots constructed to accommodate tourists. Shanghai-listed CRRC’s “Autonomous Rapid Transit” is a new-generation tram that uses magnetic road markings and can be operated unmanned. Yamanashi prefecture plans to use locally produced hydrogen to power the tram, the source said. The transit system is expected to slash the project’s cost by as much as 40% from the roughly 140 billion yen ($895 million) estimated for the rail system, said the source. The new plan would allow the prefecture to use the existing Fuji Subaru Line toll road and prohibit the entry of all private vehicles and sightseeing buses, the person said. The prefecture hopes to conduct a pilot run as early as the next fiscal year starting in April. Yamanashi is also aiming to build a tram network that would extend to local municipalities and connect to a magnetic levitation rail system planned by Central Japan Railway in the 2030s, the person said. Yamanashi prefecture declined to comment on the plan. During the summer climbing season between July to September this year, the mountain hosted 204,316 climbers. Authorities have said they hoped to control the number of visitors through a public transit system. 8. Northern Perth suburb Beldon smashes $1 million mark for a home ***** Northern Perth suburb Beldon smashes $1 million mark for a home ***** A suburb in Perth’s northern suburbs historically known for its affordability has posted its first million-dollar ***** — the highest price ever achieved for the suburb. The 40-year-old four-bedroom, two-bathroom house at 3 Daylight Close in Beldon, 25km north of of the CBD, sold for $1 million earlier this month by Haiven Property team Chris and Jai Lovell. Ms Lovell said the 707sqm 1984-built home — with a pool — had been renovated inside. The most recent owner, a local investor, also renovated both bathrooms and the laundry after buying it in 2022 for $690,000. “This property was professionally staged for ***** and presented at an extremely high level, which saw it attract multiple offers, including the successful $1 million bid and another at $993,000,” Ms Lovell said. “The seller was handsomely rewarded for the hard work put in and was clearly overjoyed to receive this record-breaking cash *****.” REIWA statistics reveal the media house price in Beldon was $768,000 in the year to September 2024, up 17.8 percent in the past 12 months. Camera Icon3 Daylight Close, Beldon, sold for a record price. Credit: Supplied Ms Lovell said with recent home sales in the suburb nudging higher, the couple wasn’t surprised 3 Daylight Close set a record. “In the past few months, we’ve sold several three-bedroom, one-bathroom homes in Beldon that have achieved prices in the high $800,000s and early $900,000s, so we knew it wouldn’t be long before buyers would see value at $1 million for a four-bedroom, two-bathroom in the suburb,” she said. “We’ve been helping families in Beldon move for close to 25 years now and the suburb has certainly evolved during this time, with an increasing number of homes built in the 70s and 80s now being extended and renovated to a very high standard. “With only 1300 homes, Beldon is one of the smallest suburbs in the north and often gets overlooked by buyers because of this, but it’s on the western side of the freeway and only a five-minute drive to one of Perth’s best beaches. Camera IconOne of the bedrooms at the record-breaking Daylight Close house. Credit: Supplied “It’s also very close to the new upcoming Ocean Reef Marina, which we’re anticipating will bring further growth to the area, is family-oriented, offers large size blocks and plentiful amenities, and is an easy 20-to-25 minute commute into the city.” Ms Lovell said pairing the right selling agent with outstanding home presentation was the secret to success in real estate in the current market. “Presentation is absolutely crucial for achieving a premium price because buying a home can be an emotional decision, so creating a welcoming, appealing atmosphere is essential for capturing buyer interest,” she said. “We strongly recommend hiring a professional stylist to stage the home before it goes to market and skilled stylists can incorporate the seller’s existing furniture with new items to refresh the space effectively. “Investing in touch-ups like painting, new carpets and freshening up tired can also make a significant impact.” Source link #Northern #Perth #suburb #Beldon #smashes #million #mark #home #***** Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

The Palm Springs City Council approved the deal in a unanimous vote Thursday. The council also approved $10 million for a first-time homebuyer assistance program, $10 million for a community land trust and the creation of a monument commemorating the history of the neighborhood known as Section 14. Mayor Jeffrey Bernstein earlier this week said the city is “taking bold and important action that will create lasting benefits for our entire community while providing programs that prioritize support for the former residents of Section 14.” It has not been determined how much each family or individual would receive in direct compensation, attorney Areva Martin said earlier this week. 11. Shift Up Could Be Planning On Using Stellar Blade’s PC Release as A Gambling Chip For a Sequel Shift Up Could Be Planning On Using Stellar Blade’s PC Release as A Gambling Chip For a Sequel Shift Up’s 2024 game, Stellar Blade, proved to be one of the most successful games of this year despite the controversies related to its protagonist. Thanks to its success on PlayStation 5, Shift Up has now announced that the game will be released on Steam and the Epic Games Store in 2025. While this news is exciting, most of the fanbase has been eagerly waiting for Stellar Blade‘s sequel. It seems like Sony and Shift Up are taking things slow as a PC release would further determine if it would be feasible to create a sequel. Stellar Blade is releasing on PC in 2025 (Image via Shift Up) About six months ago, Shift Up’s financial report confirmed that the studio was considering a PC release and sequel for the game. It seems like Shift Up is currently getting over the first step: a PC release. After this, we should expect the studio to start working on a sequel. Stellar Blade‘s PC Release Might Play A Key Role In The Development Of A Sequel Shift Up’s latest financial report has confirmed that Stellar Blade will be released on Steam and the Epic Games Store in 2025. This PC release will play an important role in setting up the franchise’s future as Shift Up is clearly attempting to understand the trend. Investing so much time and resources on a sequel would certainly be useless if the game fails to sell on PC. There’s a slim chance that the game fails to perform on PC as there have been many PlayStation exclusives that have performed exceptionally on PC, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is one such example. There was some controversy due to the portrayal of Eve, the game’s protagonist. Many accused Shift Up of objectifying Eve as a way to market the game. Despite these setbacks, Stellar Blade performed well, selling over 1 million units by June 2024. Shift Up Is Sure That Stellar Blade PC Will Perform Better Than PS5 Version Fans are eagerly waiting for a sequel (Image via Shift Up) Further in the financial report, Shift Up stated that the success of ****** Myth: Wukong has convinced them that the PC version will perform better than the PlayStation 5 version. Stellar Blade was launched for the PlayStation 5 on April 26, 2024, and quickly became one of the most popular games around the world. The PS5 version was well-received by the fans so it’s safe to say that PC players won’t be disappointed. We can expect Shift Up to start working on the sequel after the release of the PC version. In May, the studio’s financial report confirmed that they are considering a PC release and sequel for the game. The first phase of its plan will be wrapped up by 2025 when Stellar Blade releases on PC, so shortly after that, we can expect Shift Up to start working on the sequel. 18. Jake Paul admits conscious decision not to hit Mike Tyson with knockout punch Jake Paul admits conscious decision not to hit Mike Tyson with knockout punch Jake Paul says he made the conscious decision not to knock boxing legend Mike Tyson out during their blockbuster bout on Saturday afternoon (AEDT). A 58-year-old Tyson stepped back into the ring for the first time in 19 years to ****** Paul, a 27-year-old YouTuber and social media influencer-turned fighter. Paul shocked almost no one when he dominated the ****** to claim a unanimous decision in front of more than 70,000 at AT&T Stadium, with over 60 million households tuning in. Tyson showed life early in the ****** but struggled to ***** a shot as it wore on. The older man looked ripe for the picking but Paul held back from delivering the knockout *****, instead even bowing towards his opponent in the final 10 seconds of the contest in a show of respect. Speaking after the ******, Paul said he didn’t want to do any more damage to Tyson. Asked specifically if he held punches back due to Tyson’s tiring condition, Paul said: “Yeah, definitely. Definitely a bit. “I wanted to give the fans a show but I didn’t want to hurt someone that didn’t need to be hurt.” The underwhelming spectacle sparked a vexed response from the crowd, who were somewhat disappointed at the competitiveness of the ******, but didn’t want to boo a champion. Camera IconJake Paul has admitted he didn’t want to knock out Mike Tyson. Credit: Getty Former WBC cruiserweight champion Tony Bellew said Paul deserves credit for reading the room well enough to resist going for the knockout. “I don’t like this ******* ****** **** but I will say this. He stopped beating on Mike there and showed him some respect and dignity by letting him survive,” Bellew said. “He didn’t go for the KO there, he stepped off him and let him be. “Mike we all adore you, king, your (sic) a super hero to all of us from the proper ****** business!” Meantime, Netflix’s first attempt at handling a live sports event was less than ideal, with the coverage experiencing common streaming problems. Many vented their frustrations with streaming and buffering problems before and during the ******. According to the website Down Detector, nearly 85,000 viewers logged problems with outages or streaming leading up to the ******. The bout was Netflix’s biggest live sports event to date, and an opportunity to make sure it can handle audience demand with the NFL and WWE on the horizon. It was available to stream globally to Netflix’s 280 million subscribers at no additional cost. Netflix will broadcast two NFL games on Christmas Day and will begin streaming WWE Raw on January 6. 19. ‘Remarkable’ 2,000-year-old gladiator ****** handle discovery shows Rome’s reach ‘Remarkable’ 2,000-year-old gladiator ****** handle discovery shows Rome’s reach Archaeologists have uncovered a rare Roman-era ****** handle shaped like a gladiator in the River Tyne near Corbridge Roman Town, located along Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland, England. Believed to be approximately 2,000 years old, the intricately crafted copper-alloy artifact is a testimony to the far-reaching cultural influence of gladiatorial combat within the Roman Empire, even at its northernmost frontier. Dr. Frances McIntosh, Collections Curator for English Heritage, called the discovery “particularly remarkable” given its excellent preservation and rarity in Britain. The ****** handle depicts a muscular secutor, a type of heavily armored gladiator known for close-combat prowess. The secutor is characterized by a large shield, sword, and rounded helmet designed to protect against the net-wielding retiarius, their traditional adversary in Roman arenas. Gladiatorial fame and Roman sporting memorabilia Remarkably, the figurine on the handle is left-handed—an uncommon and historically significant detail, as left-handedness was considered a bad omen in ancient Rome. Scholars speculate that this unique feature might represent a specific gladiator, possibly an individual celebrated for overcoming the stigma or for tactical prowess in the arena. “Despite being enslaved and socially outcast due to their profession, gladiators could become huge celebrities. Gladiators and the ‘spectacles’ were an integral part of Roman cultural life, taking place all across the Roman Empire,” McIntosh said. “Gladiators had **** appeal and there are cases of high-status Roman women falling ‘in love’ with these lowly fighters, despite the vast social difference. This beautifully made ****** handle is a testament to how pervasive this celebrity culture was.” Gladiatorial games were a cornerstone of Roman public entertainment, held in amphitheaters across the empire from 105 BCE to 404 CE. These events, often brutal and fatal, attracted massive audiences and served as displays of wealth and power for the Roman elite, including emperors. While Rome’s Colosseum ******** the most iconic venue, archaeological evidence attests to similar spectacles occurring throughout the empire, including Britain. The fascination with gladiators extended to consumer goods, with memorabilia like ceramics, glassware, lamps, and figurines commemorating these fighters. A glimpse into Roman life at Corbridge The site of the discovery, Corbridge Roman Town, known as Corstopitum during Roman times, was a bustling supply hub for Hadrian’s Wall. Established in 79 CE and occupied until the Roman withdrawal from Britain around 400 CE, Corbridge served as a vital link in the empire’s northern defense network. Among other finds recovered from the River Tyne is a painted glass fragment depicting a leopard, thought to be part of a venatio scene—an animal hunt staged alongside gladiatorial fights as part of Roman games. These artifacts collectively offer a vivid picture of daily life and entertainment in Roman Britain. The enduring allure of gladiators is evident not only in ancient artifacts but also in modern pop culture, exemplified by the excitement surrounding the upcoming release of Gladiator II. Dr. McIntosh highlighted this cultural continuity, saying, “Even now, almost 2,000 years later, the fascination around gladiators persists.” English Heritage plans to display the ****** handle alongside other finds from the river at Corbridge Roman Town in 2025, offering visitors a glimpse into the vibrant cultural and social life of Roman Britain. This exhibit promises to connect ancient history with contemporary curiosity, further bridging the centuries-long fascination with these iconic warriors. 21. Dorit and PK Kemsley’s Mansion in Pre-Foreclosure After Missing ‘More Than Four Months of Payments’ Dorit and PK Kemsley’s Mansion in Pre-Foreclosure After Missing ‘More Than Four Months of Payments’ The perfect little life that Dorit Kemsley and PK Kemsley built together is slowly coming apart at the seams. It all started when the two announced they were separating after admitting to years of marital “struggles.” The latest chapter in this heartbreaking saga: their $7.5 million mansion is allegedly in pre-foreclosure after the couple missed months of payments. Missing one month when you’re going through a marital crisis is understandable. Two months is pushing it. The Kemsleys, however, have supposedly missed a whopping four months of mortgage payments. Now, the clock is ticking for them to save their home. Another crisis for the Kemsleys Photo Credit: Chelsea Guglielmino/Bravo) The news of Dorit and PK’s housing troubles arrived via The Sun. The outlet obtained records that showed a default filed against their Encino home on October 16, 2024. Fans of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills know this home well. The couple bought it for $6.5 million in 2019. Since then, Dorit has hosted a handful of chic parties in the sprawling estate, taking full advantage of the indoor/outdoor entertaining space. Plus, this is the same house that was targeted by burglars back in 2021. Since Dorit and PK’s house is in a pre-foreclosure status, they still have time to save their home. It isn’t a lost cause. They just need to pay all of their missed payments in one lump sum. However, when you’re four months behind, that might be easier said than done. Other options for the Kemsleys include filing for bankruptcy or hiring a foreclosure attorney. If they don’t act soon, the bank can move forward with foreclosing on the property, meaning Dorit and the kids would need to pack up and get out. In addition to falling short on their mortgage, the couple have been entangled with the IRS over a $1 million tax debt. On top of that, Dorit recently just settled an outstanding debt of her own over a closet reorganization service. She owed the company a whopping $8,556.15, all for a closet that she might not be able to keep. Dorit and PK haven’t commented on their latest financial trouble, but we’ve got our fingers crossed that the couple can figure out their latest mess. Otherwise, they better start looking for apartments. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills Season 14 premieres Tuesday, November 19 at 8/7c on Bravo. Credit: INAH, El Colegio Nacional A mass ritual sacrifice of young children to a rain **** in 15th-century Mexico coincided with a deadly drought in the region, according to new research. The skeletal ******** of at least 42 children, ages 2 to 7, were discovered at Templo Mayor, the most significant temple complex in Tenochtitlán, now Mexico City, in 1980 and 1981. The skeletons, which were facing up and had their limbs contracted, were placed inside ashlar boxes on a layer of sand. Some were adorned with finery such as necklaces and had green stone beads in their mouths. Now, new research has revealed that the sacrifices were likely an attempt to end a great drought in the region by making offerings to the rain **** Tláloc. The research was presented last week at the ninth Liberation through knowledge meeting: “Water and Life” at Mexico’s National College. “At first, the Mexica state tried to mitigate its effects by opening the royal granaries to redistribute food among the neediest classes, while carrying out mass sacrifices of children in the Templo Mayor to calm the fury of the tlaloque [rain dwarves who were assistants of Tláloc],” Leonardo López Luján, an archaeologist and director of the National Institute of Anthropology and History’s (INAH) Templo Mayor Project, said at the meeting. “For a time, it faced the tragedy this way, but the excessive duration of the crisis made the state vulnerable, forcing it to allow the mass exodus of its people.” To find out why the mass offering was performed, INAH researchers studied geological data alongside entries in the ******** Drought Atlas, which showed that a major drought occurred across central Mexico between 1452 and 1454. Related: ‘An offering to energize the fields’: 76 child sacrifice victims, all with their chests cut open, unearthed at burial site in Peru The drought, which took place during the reign of Moctezuma I and the construction of the Templo Mayor, decimated harvests, devastated populations in the region and forced starving families to sell children to nearby towns in exchange for food, according to López Luján. The sculptures were made to resemble the face of Tláloc, the Aztec **** of rain, water and fertility. In fact, the adornment of the children was likely an attempt to make the children resemble rain dwarves, López Luján said.
