A major Mega Millions winning ticket was sold in La Quinta. Next came Coachella.
It seems Coachella Valley has seen a bit of luck in the past week.
A Stater Bros. Markets on state Route 111 in La Quinta sold a winning ticket in the Feb. 14 Mega Millions drawing worth nearly $1.5 million, the California Lottery said a news release Saturday.
The winning ticket matched the first five numbers in the Mega Millions drawing and is worth $1,499,864. According to the news release, the grocery store earns a bonus of nearly $7,500 for selling it. The winning numbers were 11, 19, 31, 49, 56, and Mega Ball 16.
More recently, an Arco ampm at 52138 Harrison St., Coachella, sold the top winning ticket in Wednesday’s SuperLotto Plus draw, a prize of $33,186, according to the California Lottery. The winning numbers were 1, 4, 12, 15, 28 and Mega number 15.
It comes as a Stater Bros. Markets on Ramon Road in Cathedral City sold a Mega Millions ticket that won more than $2.1 million in a draw last March, the California Lottery announced in 2024. In September, an Arco ampm on Date Palm Drive in Cathedral City sold a Mega Millions ticket that won a prize of $2,233,779.
In Mega Millions, the odds of matching all five numbers and the Mega Millions number is 1 in 302,575,350, according to the California Lottery. The SuperLotto Plus odds of matching all five numbers and the Mega number are 1 in 41,416,353.

Sony Japan Studio Closed Because AA Market ‘Disappeared’, Says Shu Yoshida
Former BioWare executive Mark Darrah says “be a human being, have some empathy.”
Fans don’t know who is actually to blame.
Darrah throws up a hypothetical that someone might not like how an actor delivered a line. Sure, it could well be down to the actor, but it also might be down to who was directing them, how the writer asked their work to be delivered, or maybe that was the only take they got.

Liam Payne: Charges against three people dropped as two people face prosecution over alleged drug supply
Liam Payne: Charges against three people dropped as two people face prosecution over alleged drug supply
Following investigations into the death of One Direction star Liam Payne’s death in Argentine, a court has dropped charges against three people.
Charges of criminal negligence had been laid against five people in relation to the singer’s shock death, with three people now let off the hook.
The former One Direction singer fell from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires in October 2024.
In its decision issued on Wednesday, the Argentine appeals court ordered the other two defendants in the case to remain in custody.
They face prosecution on charges they supplied the famed British boy band star with narcotics.
The ruling drops charges against three key defendants: Rogelio Nores, an Argentine businessman and friend of Payne who accompanied the singer during his trip in Buenos Aires; Gilda Martin, the manager of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel where Payne died on October 16; and Esteban Grassi, the hotel’s main receptionist.
The charge of negligent ********* carries a sentence of one to five years in prison in Argentina.
A toxicology report from tests taken after an autopsy revealed that Payne, 31, had alcohol, ******** and a prescription antidepressant in his system when he fell from the balcony.
Prosecutors argued that Nores had failed to comply with his duties of care by leaving Payne alone while inebriated.
The court sided with defence lawyers who contended that Nores had no legal, moral or social duty to care for Payne, and he was outside the hotel at the time of his friend’s death.
The two hotel employees, Martin and Grassi, were in the Casa Sur lobby on October 16 when they saw Payne severely intoxicated and decided to take him to his room with the help of others, investigators determined.
Prosecutors said the men should have kept Payne away from his hotel room, where a balcony posed a clear danger, until the singer could receive proper medical care.
On Wednesday, the court ruled that prosecutors failed to prove how taking Payne to his hotel room “constituted unlawful, unruly, clumsy, reckless, imprudent or negligent conduct”.
The court also ordered the other two defendants – Ezequiel David Pereyra, a former employee at CasaSur Hotel and Braian Paiz, a waiter who had served Payne at a Buenos Aires restaurant – to remain in detention on charges that they supplied Payne with narcotics.
The charge they face carries a sentence of four to 15 years in prison.
Payne’s sudden death drew an outpouring of grief around the world from heartbroken fans of One Direction, among the best-selling boy bands ever.

A Pair Of Great Star Wars RPGs Are Free For Android Owners Right Now
A Pair Of Great Star Wars RPGs Are Free For Android Owners Right Now
Following its recent launch, the mobile Epic Games Store is continuing to roll out free games on Android worldwide and iOS in the European Union. Two new arrivals are particularly good ones worth picking up.
From now until March 20, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II are available for free through the mobile version of the Epic Games Store. Both were console heavy hitters 20 years ago and defined what a Star Wars RPG would look and feel like. Characters like Darth Revan and Bastilla Shan have been fan favorites ever since, with the latter coming close to actual canonization.
Last month, the Epic Games Store added nearly 20 third-party games. There will be new games offered each month until Epic moves to a weekly schedule later this year.
For years, Epic Games has fought with Apple and Google in court for the right to expand the Epic Games Store on mobile. The company says that it grew Epic cross-platform accounts to 898 million users during 2024–an increase of 94 million people–and this stat includes accounts created through partner platforms and the Epic Games Store. Epic is following in the footsteps of its PC store by trying to attract users with free games.
Recently, two members of Epic’s board of directors were forced to step down by the US Justice Department because they were already members of Tencent’s board, which the government considers a rival gaming company. Epic is also suing an alleged cheater whom the company claims has used unauthorized software to gain an unfair advantage during several of the company’s Fortnite tournaments.

The D&D Monster Manual Just Got Its First New Edition In Over A Decade
The D&D Monster Manual Just Got Its First New Edition In Over A Decade
A new version of the Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual, one of the seminal tabletop RPG’s most important source books, was released earlier this week. This is the first new version of the book in a decade and is the third new entry in the D&D 2024 Edition Core Collection along with the new 2024 Player’s Handbook and 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide that launched last year–and just like those other releases, the new Monster Manual is compatible with D&D 5E books and supplemental materials. You can pick up the 2024 Monster Manual for $49.47 at Amazon.
$49.47
The hardcover Dungeons & Dragons 2024 Monster Manual includes stats blocks, lore, and other information for over 500 unique monsters for your D&D campaigns, including 75 all-new creatures. The book also offers guidance on creating unique combat encounters and boss monsters, as well as blueprints for crafting humanoid NPCs. All that gameplay information is supplemented with over 300 pieces of art.
As mentioned above, Dungeons & Dragons 2024 Monster Manual is part of the new D&D 2024 Edition Core Collection. This updated version of the game–also known as 5.5E–is designed as an enhanced and streamlined version of D&D 5E. While the new 2024 editions of the Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and now Monster Manual all introduce new gameplay elements and tweaked rules, they are also backward compatible with 5E materials, including all rulebooks, adventure modules, expansions, and third-party 5E supplements. That also means you can use your existing 5E characters with the new 5.5E rulebooks.
If you’re new to D&D or are considering updating all your books to the new versions, you’ll find the other Dungeons & Dragons 2024 Edition releases at Amazon, including the new Player’s Handbook and updated accessories like official character sheets and DM screen. The only book currently not available at Amazon is the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide, but we expect it will be restocked in the near future. You can also purchase digital versions of the new 2024 Edition rulebooks via D&D Beyond.

Tel Aviv suspected terror attack: Three buses explode in Bat Yam, Israel, authorities search for more devices
Tel Aviv suspected terror attack: Three buses explode in Bat Yam, Israel, authorities search for more devices
Authorities are racing to investigate a suspected terror attack in Israel after three buses exploded.
The explosions occurred in Bat Yam a suburb of Tel Aviv
It is understood that two buses exploded simultaneously before a third bus later exploded.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the leader “has been receiving ongoing updates from his Military Secretary on the IED incidents in the Dan area and will soon hold a security assessment”.
The buses, which had been in service transporting Israelis just minutes before the explosions, had just returned to their depot empty just before the blasts.
Local police said: “Miraculously, the buses arrived at the parking lots a moment before the explosion.”
All public transport services in Israel, including trains, buses and light rail trains have been cancelled by the Government.
All buses in the Tel Aviv metro area are currently being searched for additional devices.
Video shared to social media showed fire and smoke billowing into the air as an exploded bus continued to burn.

“We need to determine if a single suspect placed explosives on a number of buses, or if there were multiple suspects,” police spokesman Haim Sargrof told Israeli TV.
Tzvika Brot, mayor of Bat Yam, said it was a miracle no one was hurt.
The empty buses had finished their routes and were in a parking lot, he said.
Mr Sargrof said the explosives matched explosives used in the West Bank, but he declined to elaborate.
Israel has repeatedly carried out military raids on suspected ************ militants in the West Bank since ******’s October 7, 2023, attack sparked the devastating war in Gaza.
As part of that crackdown, it has greatly restricted entry into Israel for Palestinians from the occupied territory.
A group identifying itself as a branch of ******’ military wing, Qassam Brigades, from the northern West Bank city of Tulkarem, posted on messaging app Telegram: “We will never forget to take vengeance for our martyrs as long as the occupation is on our lands.”
The city of Tulkarem and two refugee camps in the city have been a focus of recent Israeli army raids.
Since the ceasefire with ****** in Gaza took effect on January 19, Israel has been conducting a broad military offensive in the West Bank.
Brot, the mayor, urged the public to keep their routines, saying schools would be open on Friday and public transport would operate.
More to come…

What is it like living next door to Albert Square?
What is it like living next door to Albert Square?

EastEnders is celebrating its 40th anniversary
As all EastEnders fans know, the TV soap’s famous Albert Square is not really in the East End of London.
Since its beginnings, the show has been shot on an outdoor set at BBC Elstree Centre, which is tucked away in the centre of Borehamwood in Hertfordshire.
To an outsider, the terraced houses complete with satellite dishes could fool you into thinking it is just another residential street.
Get closer though and you will find fans camped outside the security gates with umbrellas and chairs, hoping to meet their favourite actors as they sneak out on a lunch break.
So what is it like for the people of Borehamwood who, for the last 40 years, could technically call The Queen Vic pub their local?
Phil Mitchell’s neighbourDanny Fullbrook/BBC
Darren Bloch lives next to the EastEnders set in Hertfordshire
A few weeks ago, Darren Bloch was washing up when something exploded.
“I started panicking. I could see smoke and all that,” he said.
“I quickly shouted to my wife to call the fire service and she called down to say, ‘Oh, no, don’t worry, it’s EastEnders. They sent a letter around to say it was going to happen’.
“I was panicked for a bit.”
Danny Fullbrook/BBC
The access road to the EastEnders set near Darren Bloch’s house
The couple live so close to the set that Albert Square hardman Phil Mitchell’s house overlooks their back garden.
Mr Bloch said: “From our bedroom, you can see the whole set, the tops of the buildings and all the set, so we’re right on the set.
“When we tell our friends where we live they find it’s amazing… They’ve definitely come up to our bedroom and had a good look.”
Danny Fullbrook/BBC
Friends of Mr Bloch like to try and watch filming take place from his bedroom window
The 37-year-old only moved to the area four months ago. He is originally from South Africa where they have never heard of characters like Ian Beale, Dot Branning or Kat Slater.
Although Darren lives closer to the fictional London borough of Walford than anybody else in the world, he has never seen an episode in his life.
“I’ve Googled it a few times, just to see if I know any of the faces that I regularly see walking around, nothing so far, I haven’t been so lucky,” he said.
“We did watch Strictly [Come Dancing] this year, that was my first reference of an EastEnders actor.”
Danny Fullbrook/BBC
Darren Bloch often spots EastEnders fans camped outside his house
Alongside the couple’s home is a road that leads into the set, which is blocked off by a large security gate.
Fans are often sitting on the edge of Darren’s driveway hoping for a glimpse of their favourite characters on their way to the local shops.
He said: “When we first moved in it was something we definitely had to get used to, having so many people just walking and looking over.
“You think, ‘Are they looking into our property?’ and then you realise they’re just trying to get a glimpse of the studios.
“I sometimes see people getting autographs or signatures or something. I just don’t know who they are.”
‘They admire my roses’Danny Fullbrook/BBC
Pamela Waple has lived near the set for eight years
Somebody who would recognise the cast is Mr Bloch’s neighbour and fan of the soap, Pamela Waple.
The 74-year-old, who moved to Borehamwood eight years ago, said: “They are all so friendly and so charming. If I’m out in the front garden, they will stop and they chat and they admire my roses.
“They sometimes film out the front of the house. There was one a few weeks ago with [character] Jack Branning.”
BBC/Jack Barnes
In 2022, EastEnders started using a new set as the previous outdoor site had deteriorated
Behind Ms Waple’s garden shed are two houses, part of the soap’s set, but through the gap between them you can catch a glimpse of Albert Square itself.
She said: “We do hear the occasional bang, and shouting and hoorays. At Christmas, we see the decorations when they decorate the square.
“Christmas goes up about August and there’s all snow on the rooftops. It is very odd.”
Danny Fullbrook/BBC
Ms Waple can often hear EastEnders being filmed on the set behind her house
In 2022, the show started using a new set after the original one, used since 1984, had deteriorated to the point it was no longer usable.
During construction, residents were invited for a tour of the £86.7m replacement.
Ms Waple said: “We could walk around Albert Square which was quite surreal, but the neighbours I went with didn’t watch it so it didn’t mean much to them, but for me it was bizarre walking around Albert Square.”
‘I can see Albert Square from my window’
On Thursday, there will be a live episode of the soap, broadcast from the set in Borehamwood.
Ms Waple said: “To think when they do the live performance they’re actually going to be there, and I’ll be here watching it on my TV – I can get it in stereo.
“There’s a child that lives next door, he cries a lot and screams a lot, I wonder if that interferes with their filming because you do hear them shout ‘action’.”
She added: “I dread to think anything happens to EastEnders. We’d have a housing estate there.”
Walford High StreetBBC/Danny Fullbrook
The actors who play Bianca Jackson, Minty Peterson and Phil Mitchell have all been regulars at Golden Plaice fish and chip shop
If BBC Elstree Centre is the EastEnders equivalent of a Hollywood studio then Borehamwood high street is the walk of fame.
Ask anybody in the shops, cafes or pubs at the centre of town and they will probably have a story about meeting or serving the show’s cast.
Aziz Chatt, a cook at Golden Plaice fish and chip shop, said: “Bianca was here a couple of weeks ago, she came twice in the last couple of weeks.
“Minty used to come nearly every week.
“Phil Mitchell loves his fish and chips. He comes and takes his cod and chips. I saw him a few weeks ago, he’s a nice and chatty man… He likes salt and vinegar.”
BBC/Danny Fullbrook
Michelle Smith remembers when the actor who plays Max Branning would have a daily jog down the street in his “teenie weenies”
Michelle Smith, the manager of Peace Hospice Care, has noticed that things bought in her shop have ended up on screen.
“We used to be a furniture shop so they bought a lot from us… we’ve spotted sofas and things,” she said.
“Ten years ago it was a Jubilee or something, they had a big episode with Dot and another lady. I watched it and was like, ‘Oh my God, there’s all the bits they bought from the shop’.”
She has lost count of how many cast members have visited the shop over the 22 years she has worked in the area and recalls regularly spotting Max Branning actor Jake Wood getting some exercise in between filming.
“Max Branning used to run round in his little 80s shorts. You used to see him jogging all the time in his teenie weenies,” she said.
BBC/Danny Fullbrook
Karen Whitehouse’s son was in an early episode of EastEnders
Karen Whitehouse works in the same shop, and her son was an extra in one of the show’s first episodes.
She said: “He was just in a carnival scene where the kids are running around.
“The funny thing is, when people come into Borehamwood to see if they can spot the actors, you do get a lot.”
Ms Smith added: “We’ve had to take a few out the back door when they’ve really been harassed.
“They’re all really lovely people, because they come in so often you see them in the street, and they shout ‘all right?’.”
Hertsmere Borough Council
EastEnders producer Chris Clenshaw (right) is presented with a special award by Hertsmere Borough Council leader Jeremy Newmark
To mark the soap’s 40th birthday, Hertsmere Borough Council presented Chris Clenshaw, the show’s executive producer, with a special award.
Council leader and Elstree Film Studios chairman Jeremy Newmark said: “EastEnders has been totemic of the growth in the screen sector here in Hertsmere and proven a trailblazer with its treatment of the important social issues of the day.
“It’s played a critical role in our national conversations over the past 40 years and we are very proud to have the BBC EastEnders team right here in the heart of our borough.”

Republican Sen. Murkowski raises concerns about Trump firings
04:21
Washington — A federal judge on Thursday allowed President Trump’s efforts to shrink the federal workforce to continue moving forward while legal proceedings continue, declining a request from a group of labor unions to temporarily block his firing of federal employees and other actions targeting government workers.
U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, who sits on the federal district court in Washington, D.C., said in a 16-page decision that he had to deny the unions’ request for relief because he lacks jurisdiction over the claims. The judge, appointed by former President Barack Obama, said the unions must pursue their legal challenges through the scheme established by Congress in the Federal Service Labor-Management Relations Statute, which governs labor relations in the federal workforce.
The five unions, which represent federal workers, had asked Cooper to issue an order that temporarily prevented the termination of members who are probationary employees; implementation of large-scale reductions in force throughout the government; and a renewal of the president’s “deferred resignation program.”
That program offered federal workers the chance to resign their positions but retain full pay and benefits until Sept. 30. The deadline for employees to accept the offer was Feb. 12, and roughly 75,000 federal workers agreed to the program, according to the White House.
The unions argued that the president’s three initiatives — firing of probationary employees, deferred resignation program and planned large-scale reductions in force — violate the separation of powers and federal law.

5 Ways To Become a Millionaire in Your 50s
5 Ways To Become a Millionaire in Your 50s
Diamond Dogs / iStock.com
It’s never too late for anything, not even to become a millionaire later in life. Sure, it’s always better to get into the habit of saving, budgeting and planning early in life if just to take advantage of compounding interest. But even if you missed out on those earlier opportunities to build wealth, you could still get rich in your 50s.
Read Next: 4 Secrets of the Truly Wealthy, According To Dave Ramsey
Find Out: These 10 Used Cars Will Last Longer Than an Average New Vehicle
“Even if you find yourself in the Gen X or early Boomer category, achieving millionaire status is still possible,” said Joe Camberato, the CEO of National Business Capital. “But it demands a laser-focused mindset and a willingness to make sacrifices as if you were just starting out. It might feel like you’re hitting the reset button, but it’s a necessary step to meet your financial goals and compensate for lost time.”
Here are some steps experts recommend.
Don’t be tempted to compare your progress to others, as everyone’s circumstances differ. Instead, concentrate on your unique path and the goals you’ve set for yourself.
“Focus on self-investment, both in terms of education and knowledge. It’s a proven strategy for wealth accumulation since most wealthy people continually seek ways to expand their financial resources,” said Camberato. “And, of course, many investments qualify for lower tax rates as capital gains.”
Ryan Janus, a certified financial planner (CFP) and 5 Cities You Need To Consider If You’re Retiring in 2025 at Janus Financial, said that as an advisor, he has witnessed “more than a few people in their 50s become millionaires,” and all of their paths to get there were very similar.
“The foundational part of achieving this goal is to create good savings habits. They all started small and worked on increasing their savings rate over time,” said Janus.
Then, rather than focusing on which stock pick might make them rich, they directed their energy toward their greatest wealth-building tool — their ability to earn income.
“They spent time improving their skills and deepening their expertise in their line of work, leading to ******* and better promotions. This allowed them to increase their savings rate with every promotion and accelerate their path to becoming a millionaire before retirement,” added Janus.

According to Lisa Sakai, the founder of One Vision Retirement, if you want to become a millionaire in your 50s, you “have to have a why.”
Story Continues
In other words, without a clear vision of what you want, why you want it, when you want to have it by and how it will feel when you achieve it, Sakai warned you may not have enough motivation to keep saving during hard times.
Many people hit their peak earning years in their 50s and have the opportunity to take full advantage of those high-earning years to save and invest aggressively.
Instead of increasing spending as income increases, look for ways to cut spending in areas that you don’t value to be able to increase the amount you’re investing, said Ashley Rittershaus, a CFP and the founder of Curious Crow Financial Planning.
“Depending on your situation, this may include investing in accounts like employer-sponsored retirement plans, traditional or Roth IRAs, HSAs and brokerage accounts,” she said. “Don’t try to time the market, just focus on consistently investing every paycheck or every month.”
Christopher Lazzaro, a chartered financial consultant (ChFC) as well as the founder and president of Plan For It Financial, added that another important step is to really get your arms around your budget, specifically what he calls “the Big Three” — housing, transportation and food.
“Overall, making a concerted effort to spend less than you earn should be the goal here,” he said. “It sounds intuitive, but this can be very challenging for many who have not focused on savings and investing to this point.”
By focusing on high-income skills, you can significantly increase what you make at your job, enabling you to make up for the lost time.
“Traditionally the only way that one will be able to make this amount of money is to have a lot of time and a lower return or a little bit of time with a very high return,” said Sebastian Jania, the owner of Ontario Property Buyers. “The high-income skills will allow one to be able to have a large nest egg and in a short *******.”

Block reported fourth-quarter results on Thursday that fell short of Wall Street expectations. The stock dropped more than 7% in extended trading.
Here is how the company did, compared to analysts’ consensus estimates from LSEG.
Earnings per share: 71 cents, adjusted vs. 87 cents expectedRevenue: $6.03 billion vs. $6.29 billion expected
Revenue increased about 4.5% from $5.77 billion a year earlier.
Block, formerly known as Square, posted $2.31 billion in gross profit, a 14% increase from $2.03 billion a year ago. The company, which was an early leader in providing point-of-***** systems for smaller businesses, faces increased competition from the likes of Toast and Fiserv’s Clover unit.
Gross payment volume came in at $61.95 billion, beating analysts’ estimates of $61.3 billion, according to StreetAccount. Block posted adjusted earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of $757 million, topping the $740 million average analyst estimate.
Block’s payments business has expanded beyond traditional point-of-***** transactions to include lending and financial services. The company acquired *********** buy now, pay later firm Afterpay for $29 billion in 2021, integrating the service into Cash App and Square’s ecosystem.
CEO Jack Dorsey has positioned Block’s Cash App Card as a potential alternative to traditional credit cards, with plans to deepen its connection to Afterpay. Analysts see lending as a key driver of future monetization, with some pointing to additional revenue opportunities in merchant services and advertising within Cash App.
Under Dorsey’s leadership, Block made a big jump into crypto, creating a new unit focused on its efforts in that area. However, last year the company wound down some of those projects after they failed to gain traction.

GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen hikes his personal stake in Alibaba to $1 billion, WSJ says
GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen hikes his personal stake in Alibaba to $1 billion, WSJ says
GameStop Chairman Ryan Cohen.
CNBC
GameStop CEO and billionaire investor Ryan Cohen has increased his personal stake in ******** e-commerce giant Alibaba to roughly 7 million shares worth about $1 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
Citing people familiar with the matter, the Journal said the sizable stake in Alibaba is a bullish bet on China’s economic growth in the long run.
Cohen wasn’t immediately available when CNBC reached out for comment.
The news came after the ******** titan posted a sharp profit hike in the December quarter amid strength in its Cloud Intelligence unit and e-commerce segment. Shares of Alibaba surged 8.1% on Thursday.
In 2023, the investor urged Alibaba to increase buybacks as he believed the stock was severely undervalued, the Journal said.
Alibaba’s outspoken founder, Jack Ma, who has largely kept out of the public eye since 2020, was among the entrepreneurs who attended a rare closed-door meeting headed by ******** President Xi Jinping on Monday, during which the Beijing leader urged private businesses to “show their talents” and strengthen their confidence in a “new era” for their activity.
Cohen became CEO of meme stock GameStop after his involvement in the video game retailer partly triggered a historic trading mania on Wall Street in 2021. The investor, who co-founded Chewy, has been leading a turnaround in the brick-and-mortar retailer over the past few years.
Under Cohen’s leadership, GameStop has focused on cutting costs and streamlining operations to ensure the business is profitable even though it is not growing. Earlier this month, CNBC reported GameStop was considering investing in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
