  1. Microsoft CEO says there is an ‘overbuild’ of AI systems, dismisses AGI milestones as show of progress Microsoft CEO says there is an ‘overbuild’ of AI systems, dismisses AGI milestones as show of progress Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella sat at an interview where he outlined the company’s plan for artificial intelligence, surprising some in the space in an hour-long session with Dwarkesh Patel. Nadella talked about how AI’s impact should be measured, the exponential growth for compute demand, its practical applications, and how it will affect humans — and Microsoft’s recent quantum breakthrough. However, one of the biggest revelations in the interview was his approach to building more hardware for AI. Nadella says that Microsoft will still need to build compute that can “actually help me not only train the next big model but also serve the next big model.” However, he also said that “there will be an overbuild” and that “it’s not just companies deploying, countries are going to deploy capital”. The Microsoft CEO said that even though he builds a lot, he also plans to lease a lot of compute. “I am thrilled that I’m going to be leasing a lot of capacity in ’27, ’28,” Nadella said. “Because I look at the builds, and I’m saying, ‘This is fantastic.’ The only thing that’s going to happen with all the compute build is the prices are going to come down.” Satya Nadella – Microsoft’s AGI Plan & Quantum Breakthrough – YouTube Watch On He likened this mindset of putting up more compute on the supply side argument of “Hey, let me build it and they’ll come.” However, he pointed out that supply and demand must have some equilibrium, and that he’s tracking both sides of the equation. He said that you have to have proof that initial investments in AI hardware would translate into demand, ensuring that you can reinvest your capital. Backing off of AGI Nadella also said that general intelligence milestones aren’t the real indicators of how AI has come along. “Us self-claiming some AGI milestone, that’s just nonsensical benchmark hacking to me.” Instead, he compared AI to the invention of the steam engine during the Industrial Revolution. “The winners are going to be the broader industry that uses this commodity (AI) that, by the way, is abundant. Suddenly productivity goes up and the economy is growing at a faster rate,” said the CEO. He then added later, “The real benchmark is the world growing at 10%.” The Microsoft CEO did not explicitly say that his company will stop building AI data centers, especially as the company has just signed a contract to restart the Three Mile Island nuclear plant for its data centers. However, it seems that he’s already put a cap on their capital expenditure, especially as competitors are also putting up their own infrastructure. Instead, Microsoft might lease capacity from them. Aside from all this, Nadella also showed off Microsoft’s breakthrough quantum chip, which he calls a “transistor moment” in quantum computing. The greatest advancement here is that the development could potentially make it feasible to build a quantum computer with millions of qubits, allowing the company to build a “utility-scale quantum computer.” Nadella even claimed that they’ll actually be able to build this in about four years’ time. 2. ‘Fighting for change’ – what next for Spain & Rubiales after trial? ‘Fighting for change’ – what next for Spain & Rubiales after trial? The phrase ‘se acaba’ – ‘it’s over’ – became the rallying call in Spain in the hours and days after the incident. The Spanish government, Fifa, the United Nations and countless players and clubs condemned Rubiales’ behaviour. Eighty one Spain players – including all 23 World Cup winners – said they would not play for the team again while Rubiales remained in charge, while most of Vilda’s coaching staff resigned in protest against the president. Rubiales initially claimed he was the victim of a “social assassination” and vowed not to resign. He ultimately stepped down nearly three weeks after the incident. The kiss had become a landmark moment in Spanish history well before Rubiales’ trial began on 3 February. “The trial was broadcast on YouTube. The verdict is something that everyone is waiting for,” David Menayo Ramos, a journalist at Marca, told BBC Sport before the verdict was announced. “Society is polarised and the trial is a reflection of that.” “This whole controversy went beyond football and beyond sport,” added BBC News journalist Guy Hedgecoe. “In a way, it was Spain’s ‘me too’ movement, causing people to look at a relationship between women and men in the workplace.” Source link #Fighting #change #Spain #Rubiales #trial Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  4. What is Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)? What is Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)? What is Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)? Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an application-layer protocol for monitoring and managing network devices on a local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN). The purpose of SNMP is to provide network devices, such as routers, servers and printers, with a common language for sharing information with a network management system (NMS). SNMP’s client-server architecture has the three following components: an SNMP manager; an SNMP agent; and a management information base (MIB). The SNMP manager acts as the client, the SNMP agent acts as the server and the MIB acts as the server’s database. When the SNMP manager asks the agent a question, the agent uses the MIB to supply the answer. SNMP is so popular that most network devices come pre-bundled with SNMP agents. To make use of the protocol, however, network administrators must first change the default configuration settings of their network devices so SNMP agents can communicate with the network’s management system. SNMP is part of the original Internet Protocol (IP) suite as defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Multiple versions of the SNMP protocol exist. The most recent version, SNMPv3, includes security mechanisms for authentication, encryption and access control. How SNMP works SNMP software agents on network devices and services communicate with a network management system to relay status information and configuration changes. The NMS provides a single interface from which administrators can issue batch commands and receive automatic alerts. SNMP relies on the concept of an MIB to organize how information about device metrics gets exchanged. The MIB is a formal description of a network device’s components and status information. MIBs can be created for any network device in the Internet of Things (IoT), including IP video cameras, vehicles, industrial equipment and medical equipment. In addition to hardware, SNMP can be used to monitor services such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). SNMP uses a blend of pull and push communications between network devices and the network management system. The SNMP agent, which resides with the MIB on a network device, constantly collects status information but will only push information to the NMS upon request or when some aspect of the network crosses a pre-defined threshold known as a trap. Trap messages are typically sent to the management server when something significant, such as a serious error condition, occurs. SNMP also includes an inform message type that enables a network monitoring tool to acknowledge messages from a device. Inform messages enable the agent to reset a triggered alert. Network management tools can also use a set message to make changes to a network device through the SNMP agent. This capability enables the network manager to make change device configurations in response to new network events. In most cases, SNMP functions in a synchronous model, with communication initiated by the SNMP manager and the agent sending a response. Typically, SNMP uses User Datagram Protocol (UDP) as its transport protocol. Well-known UDP ports for SNMP traffic are 161 (SNMP) and 162 (SNMPTRAP). These two ports are fundamental defaults and are the same in all versions of SNMP. SNMP relays information between devices and network management systems. SNMP is called “simple” because of the uncomplicated nature of the protocol’s architecture. SNMP can issue read or write commands, such as resetting a password or changing a configuration setting. It can also report back how much bandwidth, CPU and memory are in use. One of the most widely used protocols, SNMP is supported on an extensive range of hardware — from conventional network equipment like routers, switches and wireless access points to endpoints like printers, scanners and IoT devices. Components of SNMP There are four main components in an SNMP-managed network. 1. SNMP agent Agent software runs on the hardware or service being monitored, collecting data about disk space, bandwidth use and other important network performance metrics. When queried by the SNMP manager, the agent sends the requested information back to the management system. An agent may also proactively notify the NMS if an error occurs. Most devices come with an SNMP agent pre-installed but it typically needs to be turned on and configured. 2. SNMP-managed network nodes These are the network devices and services upon which the agents run. 3. SNMP manager The NMS is a software platform that functions as a centralized console to which agents feed information. The NMS will actively request agents to send updates at regular intervals. What a network manager can do with that information depends heavily on how feature-rich the NMS is. There are several free SNMP managers available, but they are typically limited in their capabilities or the number of nodes they can support. At the other end of the spectrum, enterprise-grade platforms offer advanced features for more complex networks, with some products supporting up to tens of thousands of network nodes. 4. Management information base This MIB database is a text file (.mib) that itemizes and describes all objects on a particular device that can be queried or controlled using SNMP. Each MIB item is assigned an object identifier (OID). Use this chart to compare SNMP and telemetry, an emerging method to collect network data. SNMP commands SNMP can perform a multitude of functions, using a blend of push and pull communications between network devices and the management system. It can issue read or write commands, such as resetting a password or changing a configuration setting. It can also report back how much bandwidth, CPU and memory are in use, with some SNMP managers automatically sending the administrator an email or text message alert if a predefined threshold is exceeded. Most of the time, SNMP functions in a synchronous model, with communication initiated by the SNMP manager and the agent sending a response. These commands and messages, typically transported over UDP or Transmission Control Protocol/IP (TCP/IP), are known as protocol data units (PDUs). Below are common SNMP commands: GET Request: Generated by the SNMP manager and sent to an agent to obtain the value of a variable, identified by its OID, in an MIB. GETBULK Request: Sent by the SNMP manager to the agent to efficiently obtain a potentially large amount of data, especially large tables. GETNEXT Request: Sent by the SNMP manager to the agent to retrieve the values of the next OID in the MIB’s hierarchy. INFORM Request: An asynchronous alert similar to a TRAP but requires confirmation of receipt by the SNMP manager. RESPONSE: Sent by the agent to the SNMP manager, issued in reply to a GET Request, GETNEXT Request, GETBULK Request and a SET Request. Contains the values of the requested variables. SET Request: Sent by the SNMP manager to the agent to issue configurations or commands. TRAP: An asynchronous alert sent by the agent to the SNMP manager to indicate a significant event, such as an error or failure, has occurred. 5. Knights battle to sign NZ rugby great Woodman-Wickliffe Knights battle to sign NZ rugby great Woodman-Wickliffe Newcastle’s bid to regenerate their women’s roster after a summer of high-profile exits is facing a challenge, with the NRL holding off approving the potential arrival of New Zealand rugby star Portia Woodman-Wickliffe. After Tamika Upton’s departure for Brisbane and with recently-released captain Hannah Southwell set to join St George Illawarra, the Knights have identified Woodman-Wickliffe as a potential big-name signing. The former ****** Ferns winger and New Zealand sevens champion retired from rugby last year, after 24 Tests for her country, two World Cup triumphs, two World Cup sevens title and two Olympic gold medals. The 33-year-old at the time expressed a desire to play in the NRLW, and it’s believed both Woodman-Wickliffe and Newcastle are keen to make the switch work. Woodman-Wickliffe’s arrival would be a massive boost for the Knights, given her status in rugby union in New Zealand and her ability to be a potent try-scorer. But AAP has been told the NRL are yet to green light the move, amid potential concerns around Woodman-Wickliffe’s ambassadorial role for this year’s Rugby World Cup. That tournament runs alongside the NRLW, with matches in August and September in England. The NRL have previously allowed players to feature across both codes, including three of Woodman-Wickliffe’s sevens teammates winning gold in Paris last year before returning to play in round three of the NRLW. Back-to-back NRLW premiers in 2022 and 2023, the Knights agreed to release 2023 Dally M Medallist and star fullback Upton in December, before she moved to Brisbane. Southwell’s exit was then confirmed earlier this month when the lock requested a release, while powerful prop Caitlan Johnston-Green has also left the club for Cronulla on a deal signed early last year. Aside from their interest in Woodman-Wickliffe, Newcastle’s biggest signing this summer has been Wests Tigers fullback Botille Vette-Welsh. Knights officials have also recently met with halfback Jesse Southwell to ensure there are no concerns over her future, following her older sister’s exit from the club. The playmaker’s contract with Newcastle runs until the end of 2027, but each of the next two years are by mutual options to be activated by both club and player. Newcastle are confident the 20-year-old Southwell will remain at the club long-term, keen to regain her NSW State of Origin jersey and earn a Jillaroos Test debut. Meanwhile, AAP understands Hannah Southwell has now verbally agreed to a deal to join the Dragons. The former NSW State of Origin lock toured the Saints’ Wollongong base earlier this week, and met with the club’s new female football manager Sam Bremner. The 25-year-old’s signature will come as a significant coup for the Dragons, who also hope to lock down livewire fullback Tegan Berry soon. Berry is off contract at the Dragons this year, but the Saints expect to learn shortly if the 22-year-old will take up the offer to extend into 2026 and beyond. 7. JD Vance, at CPAC, Defends His Munich Speech and Trump’s Policy Barrage JD Vance, at CPAC, Defends His Munich Speech and Trump’s Policy Barrage Vice President JD Vance on Thursday offered a defense of the frenetic first month of President Trump’s second term, using an appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference to reinforce the two men’s shared views on foreign policy in particular. Mr. Vance, fresh off a speech in Munich that provoked deep concern in Europe over his embrace of a far-right ******* political party, said that he believed the future of America’s relationships with European allies would depend on whether they embrace right-wing views on immigration. “Friendship is based on shared values,” Mr. Vance said at the event at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Md., just outside Washington. He added: “You do not have shared values if you’re so afraid of your own people that you silence them and shut them up.” Mr. Vance’s comments kicked off the conference, which is known as CPAC and is expected to serve as a three-day celebration of Mr. Trump’s agenda. The vice president also spoke at the end of the first month of Mr. Trump’s second administration, a ******* in which the president has issued executive orders at a dizzying speed, often dispensing with longstanding norms of American government. Mr. Vance acknowledged the “breakneck” pace of Mr. Trump’s second term. Asked by Mercedes Schlapp, a former Trump administration official whose husband leads the group that organizes CPAC, what stood out, Mr. Vance offered a full-throated defense of the efforts led by Elon Musk and the so-called Department of Government Efficiency to cut federal spending. Mr. Vance framed Mr. Musk’s push in economic terms, arguing that cutting federal jobs and programs would eventually help lower costs for Americans. At another point, Mr. Vance seemed to ask Americans to be patient as Mr. Trump tried to follow through on campaign promises to reduce the prices of groceries and energy. “It’s going to take some time to fix what Joe Biden broke over four years,” he said. Mr. Vance has been a regular presence at CPAC since he won his Senate race in Ohio in 2022. The conference has been a mainstay of Republican politics for decades, but since Mr. Trump’s ascent, it has been dominated by his nativist right-wing strain of conservatism. Mr. Vance is, in many ways, emblematic of that transformation. He won election through the strength of his ideological alignment with Mr. Trump, and he built broader recognition through appearances in the news media in which he often offered more articulate, cogent defenses of Mr. Trump’s views. He has also helped Mr. Trump address parts of the conservative movement with which the president has had a more uneasy alliance, including the religious right. Mr. Vance has taken a stronger position opposing abortion than Mr. Trump, who has for years shifted his position on the issue and most recently said it should be left up to the states. On Thursday, Mr. Vance reiterated Mr. Trump’s stance. But he said he believed that the administration needed to work to make it more affordable for young parents to have children, as part of an effort to “persuade our fellow citizens to stop thinking about babies as inconveniences to be discarded.” At another moment, Mr. Vance acknowledged that not everyone in his orbit appreciated his often hard-edge tone on X, the Musk-owned platform. Asked by Ms. Schlapp to share advice he had received from his wife, Usha Vance, he revealed one of her suggestions. “‘You should be nicer on social media,’” he recalled her saying. 8. ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Needs to Add One Twist to Abby’s Storyline That Got Cut From the Game ‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Needs to Add One Twist to Abby’s Storyline That Got Cut From the Game Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us comes out on April 13, 2025. Season 2 will follow the game so we can expect to be introduced to Abby Anderson and her story. With Kaitlyn Dever taking on the role, the series has the opportunity to expand on one key aspect of her backstory that was cut from Naughty Dog’s second game. The first season was a big success we’re hyped for Season 2. | Image Credit: HBO According to Laura Bailey, who voiced Abby in the game, there was a deleted flashback revealing Abby’s history with WLF leader Isaac Dixon. The scene would’ve given us more context into their relationship and explained why he was so forgiving of her betrayal. Let’s hope it makes it to Season 2. Abby’s story will be a big part of The Last of Us Season 2 And this cut content would add a lot of weight to it. | Image Credit: Naughty Dog In The Last of Us Part 2, we learn about the story of Abby and her life during the zombie apocalypse. When we first see Abby, she appears to be one of Isaac’s most trusted lieutenants, despite eventually betraying the WLF to help Lev and Yara. And when Isaac forgives her, it always seems slightly out of character, considering his ruthless leadership. According to what Abby’s voice actress Laura Bailey said in an interview with Kinda Funny on YouTube, a deleted scene would have revealed how Isaac took her in after the Fireflies disbanded. One of the things that never made it to the game, originally in some of the flashbacks, you were meant to see Abby going to the Wolves from the Fireflies. And it wasn’t ever a conscious decision [for her] to go to the Wolves Abby didn’t actively choose to join the Wolves after the Fireflies disbanded. Bailey shared how she was taken in by Isaac, a former Firefly himself and a close friend of her father. At that point, she was an orphan. I think she was only 15, I think maybe younger when everything happened. And that was where she was taken under the wing of Isaac. Isaac was a Firefly and a friend of her father, so that’s why she went there. That’s why they have the relationship they do because he kind of became a father figure to her. With Jeffrey Wright bringing Isaac to life in The Last of Us season 2, it’d be interesting to see if HBO decides to bring this part of Abby’s story to life. While The Last of Us Part 2 depicted him as a brutal leader obsessed with eradicating the Seraphites, adding this lost backstory would show a more nuanced side of him. It could be the Bill and Frank episode of Season 2 Jeffrey Wright and Richard Gere in The Agency (2024) | Image via Paramount+ Abby’s story in the game is based on revenge, but it gradually transforms into one of redemption as she begins questioning the WLF’s brutality. Imagine if Season 2 includes the cut storyline, Abby’s betrayal of Isaac becomes even more heartbreaking and would probably be a gut-wrenching story. It could be similar to the extra depth we saw with Bill and Frank’s story in Season 1. Instead of just defying her commander, Abby would be turning against the man who raised her. Her final confrontation with Isaac happens when she tries to escape with Lev. Isaac refuses to show mercy to Lev, but he’s still willing to take Abby back. He even seems hesitant to shoot her, which makes more sense when considering their cut backstory. HBO’s adaptation has had more focus on character-driven drama than on the game’s violent action. Given this approach, it would make perfect sense to bring back this lost detail about Isaac and Abby’s relationship. If you’re ready for Season 2 of The Last of Us, it comes out on HBO and Max on April 13. 12. Europe’s New Reality: Trump May Not Quit NATO, but He’s Already Undercutting It Europe’s New Reality: Trump May Not Quit NATO, but He’s Already Undercutting It In his first term President Trump episodically threatened to pull out of NATO, removing the United States as the linchpin of the most successful military alliance in modern times. In his second term, he is trying a different approach: hollowing it out from within. Mr. Trump’s decision to reverse three years of unity in aiding Ukraine against Russia’s invasion and open negotiations with President Vladimir V. Putin has forced NATO leaders to confront a fundamental question: If Mr. Putin decided to pick off a member of the alliance, is there any reason to assume Mr. Trump would come to that country’s defense, the key to its strength? “We have to assume not,” a senior member of the ******* government said at the Munich Security Conference, declining to speak on the record because of the huge sensitivity of his conclusion. In one short month as president, he and others contended, Mr. Trump has undercut the trust that sits at the center of the 75-year-old defense pact, that an attack on one member of the alliance would bring a response by all, led by the United States. That fear has only accelerated in the past day, since Mr. Trump began echoing Mr. Putin’s talking points, falsely accusing Ukraine of provoking the invasion of its own territory and casting Russia as the aggrieved party rather than the aggressor. It is a rewriting of modern history that has left the NATO allies stunned and questioning the viability of an alliance with Washington at the center. European officials knew when Mr. Trump was elected that the fundamental precepts of the post-World War II order would be threatened. They had been alarmed during the campaign when he said he would “encourage” the Russians “to do whatever the hell they want” to NATO members that did not contribute enough, in his view, to the alliance. They knew that even if the United States remained, on paper, the nuclear-armed behemoth at the center of NATO, Mr. Trump’s public musings could corrode the institution from within and undercut the goal of the alliance created in 1949 to confront the Soviet Union. But the speed at which it has all unraveled has created a crisis of enormous proportions, at a time when European leadership is weak. Mr. Trump’s decision to impose tariffs, making no distinction between allies and adversaries, seemed harmful but manageable. When his vice president, JD Vance, addressed the Munich Security Conference on Friday and seemed to embrace Alternative for Germany, which ******* intelligence has judged to be an extreme right-wing organization, the ******* defense minister, Boris Pistorius, told reporters that “this is not acceptable.” But even as they left Munich, stunned, few in the European national security establishment seemed prepared for the possibility that Mr. Trump would not only threaten American support for Ukraine, but also openly side with Mr. Putin and adapt his false line that Ukraine, not Russia, caused the conflict. On Thursday, the United States was insisting that a standard-issue statement from the Group of 7 nations, drafted by Canada to mark the third anniversary of the invasion next Monday, should be drastically shortened. Left on the cutting room floor, diplomats say, was much of the condemnation of Russia’s aggression and its violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty that were featured in similar statements issued during the first and second anniversaries. (Members of Mr. Trump’s inner circle, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, were among those who condemned Russia’s actions until recent months.) European officials suspect, based on what they heard last week from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, that tens of thousands of American troops may be pulled out of Europe over the next few months or years. Mr. Hegseth was vague on the topic, and offered no details. But here in Europe the only question is how many — and whether, when Mr. Trump is done, the American military presence in Europe will have been whittled down to a symbolic ground force, some Special Forces and operators of space assets, and several hundred tactical nuclear weapons, leftovers of the Cold War. The most generous interpretation of Mr. Trump’s move is that he is forcing European nations to radically speed what they have long promised: to take a more central role in the continent’s defense. But it is also true that Mr. Putin has been arguing for pullbacks of American troops for years. So far, few European leaders will publicly discuss the implications of a major drawdown. But Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, addressed it directly at Munich when he called for raising “an army of Europe,” independent of the United States. “Let’s be clear: We cannot rule out the possibility that America may refuse to cooperate with Europe on issues that threaten it,” Mr. Zelensky said on Saturday, before he had a blowup with Mr. Trump. “Many leaders have talked about Europe needing its own army. An army of Europe. I really believe that the time has come. The armed forces of Europe must be created.” In private, many European national security officials said Mr. Zelensky was a poor spokesman for the idea, given Ukraine’s desperate need for troops, ammunition and allies. But his fundamental concern was right, they said, and the question of whether Europe could go it alone, if needed, was one of the underlying issues at an emergency meeting that France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, held in Paris for a group of fellow European leaders. Bernard-Henri Lévy, the prominent French commentator and philosopher, wrote this week: “Europe has no choice. The American president, the secretary of defense and the secretary of state have told us that we cannot depend indefinitely on the United States. We must unite or die. If we do not act, we will endure — in two, three or five years — a new Russian assault, but this time in a Baltic country, Poland or elsewhere.” But the fact is, American military officials say, Europe is far from ready. Before Mr. Trump’s remarkable reversal, American military officials began executing a step-by-step, carefully coordinated handover of critical defense roles from American forces to European ones. But it is a yearslong process, American and European national security officials say, done carefully to make sure no gaps are left in defenses. A rapid American withdrawal would leave huge vulnerabilities. After the Cold War, much of Europe dismantled its tanks and closed the factories that made standard ammunition, thinking that a land war in Europe was not unthinkable. Britain and France have independent nuclear forces of course, but they are a fraction of the size of American and Russian arsenals. Some European leaders, Mr. Macron included, have begun to concede that Europe responded far too slowly to the United States imploring that it spend far more on its military and rearm. And those arguments go back well before anyone imagined an American president would side with Mr. Putin. Fourteen years ago, as he was leaving the post of defense secretary, Robert M. Gates used his last speech in Europe to warn of what was coming. “The blunt reality is that there will be dwindling appetite and patience in the U.S. Congress, and in the American body politic writ large, to expend increasingly precious funds on behalf of nations that are apparently unwilling to devote the necessary resources” to the military, and “to be serious and capable partners in their own defense.” Budget cuts, the decommissioning of armored vehicles and tanks and other basics of NATO defense, and a reluctance to fight had shifted the burden of Europe’s defense to the United States, he warned. Three years later Mr. Putin seized Crimea from Ukraine, in what the Obama administration assumed would be a wake-up call for the NATO allies. It was not. It took a year for Europe and the United States to agree on some fairly weak sanctions. The next year Angela Merkel, then Germany’s chancellor, struck a deal with Mr. Putin to build the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, making Europe more dependent on Russian gas — and routing around Ukraine. She called the Russian leader a “reliable supplier.” Russia’s invasion of the rest of Ukraine three years ago finally prompted a rethinking. Germany opened up new lines of production for artillery, Finland and Sweden joined NATO out of fear and necessity, and more than 20 of the alliance’s members crossed the long-outdated threshold of spending 2 percent of their gross domestic product on defense. But some engaged in financial sleight of hand to reach the figure — some nations count veterans’ benefits or the cost of converting existing facilities to meet climate standards, for example — and now they are confronting the reality that even doubling that spending will probably not be sufficient if they need to replace the American presence. “For decades we have always wanted countries like Germany to be capable of building a far larger military force, but not the largest, or most capable, for all the obvious historical reasons,” said Richard Fontaine, the chief executive of the Center for a New American Security, a Washington think tank. “We are about to test that.” Source link #Europes #Reality #Trump #Quit #NATO #Hes #Undercutting Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Red Cross staff held up white screens in an attempt to conceal the coffins from the gaze of the large crowds as they were loaded into their vehicles. “These operations should be done privately out of the utmost respect for the deceased and for those left grieving,” the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said in a statement on Thursday. 15. Ancient 2,000-Year-Old Sword Found in Poland Linked to Vandal Warrior Burial Ancient 2,000-Year-Old Sword Found in Poland Linked to Vandal Warrior Burial A metal detector search for World War II relics in a forested area of Poland has led to the discovery of a much older artifact—a broken sword believed to be nearly 2,000 years old. Found in the Jura region of southern Poland, the sword was intentionally shattered into three pieces and is thought to have belonged to a Germanic warrior from the Vandal tribes. The object is undergoing further examination to determine its exact historical significance. Weapon Identified as a Double-Edged Spatha As reported by Live Science, according to research conducted at the Częstochowa Museum, the unearthed sword has been identified as a spatha, a double-edged broadsword commonly used by mounted Germanic warriors during the Roman Empire. This style of weapon was widely employed from the third century BCE to the fifth century CE. Southern Poland, where the artifact was found, was home to the Przeworsk culture during this *******, which included the Vandals. Evidence of Ritualistic Weapon Destruction In a statement to Live Science, Mariusz Włudarz, President of the Inventum Association, explained that the sword had been deliberately broken as part of a ******** ritual. As per reports, the warrior’s weapon was shattered and placed on a cremation pyre, a practice commonly observed in Przeworsk culture. Historical records indicate that damaged weapons, including bent swords and altered shields, were often buried with fallen warriors, a tradition possibly inherited from Celtic customs. Ongoing Research and Preservation Efforts Investigations are currently being carried out at the Częstochowa Museum to analyse the composition and history of the sword. The precise location of the discovery is being kept confidential while further searches in the area are conducted. Once initial research is completed, the artifact is expected to undergo conservation work before being placed on display at the Mokra Museum. The discovery adds to existing archaeological evidence of burial traditions associated with Germanic tribes and may provide further insights into Vandal funerary customs and their interactions with the Roman Empire. Canada names 7 drug cartels, crime groups as terrorist entities – National Canada names 7 drug cartels, crime groups as terrorist entities – National Canada is listing seven transnational criminal organizations, including multiple drug cartels, as terrorist entities under the Criminal Code, the public safety minister announced on Thursday. The move was one of the measures the government vowed when U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to a 30-day reprieve from the imposition of sweeping tariffs earlier this month, along with last week’s appointment of a fentanyl czar. Under the designation, law enforcement such as RCMP and local police will have more authority and powers to “follow the money and to look and see how criminal cartels are using sophisticated laundering tactics.” “To rid Canada of this scourge, our government will ensure law enforcement has every tool available to dismantle and disrupt the operations of these organizations in our communities,” Public Safety Minister David McGuinty said. “The measures we are taking will help keep fentanyl off ********* streets and from entering the United States.” Story continues below advertisement He said that the named groups “spread fear in local populations” and are known for drug trafficking, human trafficking and trafficking of ******** guns. 0:58 Canada to designate ******** drug cartels as terrorist organizations Of the groups listed, five are based in Mexico, including the Sinaloa cartel, which is the country’s oldest criminal group. He said all seven meet the threshold. The federal government’s move comes a day after eight Latin American crime organizations, including drug cartels, were designated as “foreign terrorist organizations” by the U.S. More on Canada More videos All but one of the groups named by Canada were also listed by the U.S., with CDN — the Cartel del Noreste — designated by Canada but not the U.S. Under Canada’s Criminal Code, a terrorist listing also prohibits financing, travel and recruitment by or for these groups. Asked if the listings were done in coordination with the Americans, McGuinty said the decision was a “sovereign, independent one,” adding he was not aware of the U.S. listing as of the press conference. However, he added that tackling the fentanyl crisis needed to be done together. “We can’t tackle these challenges unless we tackle them together,” he said. “This is part and parcel of our border plan. We can’t wrestle the fentanyl crisis to the ground alone, neither can the Americans.” Story continues below advertisement The move, however, does still come amid the continued threat by Trump to impose sweeping tariffs on all imports from Canada, citing concerns about the flow of fentanyl and migrants across the border. &copy 2025 Global News, a division of Corus Entertainment Inc. 23. Gill ton leads India to opening Champions Trophy win Gill ton leads India to opening Champions Trophy win A five-for from Mohammed Shami and an unbeaten century from Shubman Gill have ensured Champions Trophy favourites India made relatively comfortable work of winning their opening clash in Dubai by six wickets. A win for Rohit Sharma’s side was probably never really in doubt on Thursday once Bangladesh, having chosen to bat, slumped to 5-35 at the Dubai International Stadium. But the Tigers, battling to make a respectable 228 all out on the back of Towhid Hridoy’s splendid 100 and Jaker Ali’s 68 in a defiant sixth-wicket stand of 154, then made the Indians work harder than they’d have liked for the win. Shami had taken 5-53 and captain Sharma could hardly have been more embarrassed when he dropped Jaker Ali at slip, a simple missed chance that cost Axar Patel a first international hat-trick after he’d already dismissed Tanzid Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim. In reply, Gill led India’s chase with an assured eighth one-day international century and was left unbeaten on 101 off 129 ****** as India got the job done on 4-231 with 21 ****** to spare. Captain Sharma kicked things off with 41, going past the 11,000 ODI-runs landmark en route, in a brisk 69-run opening stand with Gill to get India well ahead of the required run rate, before Virat Kohli (22 off 38), Shreyas Iyer and Patel all came and went. KL Rahul provided a steady run to the finish line alongside Gill with an unbeaten 41 after he had been dropped on nine. Gill’s century came off 125 ******, India’s slowest in any one-day international in six years, but it was just the job to ensure a routine first win of the tournament. “We have been in that kind of situation many a time,” Sharma said, making the chase sound workaday. “There’s a lot of experience in that dressing room to handle that. KL and Gill at the end were quite composed. “Gill, we know the class he ha. What he showed us, it shouldn’t surprise anyone. What was good to see was he was there ’til the end.” India will next on Sunday face defending champions Pakistan, the tournament hosts who’ll go to Dubai for the match because India refused to play on their neighbours’ home turf on political and security grounds. 24. xAI’s Grok-3 is free for a short time. I tried it, and I’m impressed xAI’s Grok-3 is free for a short time. I tried it, and I’m impressed xAI launched its Grok-3 AI chatbot merely a few days ago, but locked it behind a paywall worth $40 per month. Now, the company is offering free access to it, but only for a limited time. xAI chief, Elon Musk, says the free access will only be available for a “short time,” so it’s anyone’s guess how long that window is going to be. For now, the only two features available to play around are Think and DeepSearch. Think is the feature that adds reasoning capabilities to Grok-3 interactions, in the same view as DeepThink on DeepSeek, Google’s Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental, and OpenAI’s o-series models. Thinking and reasoning models show their train of thoughts on how they break down and eventually process the user queries. The outcome, as per experts, is better performance at tasks such as solving science, coding, and mathematical problems. For a short time, Grok 3 is available for free to all! — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) February 20, 2025 DeepSearch, on the other hand, is xAI’s equivalent of Deep Research tool that is now available for Perplexity, Gemini, and ChatGPT users. Grok-3 is only the second mainstream AI product out there offering free access to a compute-intensive process such as DeepSearch or Deep Research. This is one of the most promising agentic use cases of an AI model, as it takes the knowledge gathering process to a whole new level. Once users push their question, it is broken down and a research plan is presented, including details of what sources the answers must be extracted from. The AI goes though all the relevant repositories of knowledge, reasons through the data compiled in real-time, and presents it in the form of a comprehensive report. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends If you want to access Grok-3 on the mobile platform, head over to the X app and tap on the Grok icon in the bottom bar. On the web, it is accessible directly via the social media platform by visiting the x.com/i/grok page. There is substance to all the hype In my brief time with DeepSearch, I have found it to be quite impressive. Unlike Gemini Deep Research, it doesn’t ask for an approval of the research methodology and directly goes to task once you submit your question. Compared to Gemini, it’s also faster. Regarding a deep research query about the scientific research situation on the impact of screen time on young minds, Grok-3 provided a report quicker than Gemini. Moreover, it is more transparent, as you can see the detailed thinking process that went behind collecting and finding the answers. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends Moreover, you can see a stage-wide breakdown of the whole process, progressing in real-time and saved as its own dataset, above the actual answer. On the flip side, you can not edit the research plan before the agentic search begins. Gemini, on the other hand, takes a more opaque approach. You can edit the research plan, but you can’t see a process breakdown or the thinking-reasoning flow. As far as quality goes, Gemini referenced material from 37 websites, and provided them all as a footnote for citations. Grok-3’s DeepSearch only listed six key citations, even though the answers it provided were no less useful. When I tried the less intensive Think search, Grok-3 proved to be the quicker among the two, once again. I asked about the relevance of Microsoft’s new quantum computing chip, and noticed two crucial differences. Nadeem Sarwar / Digital Trends Grok-3 took a more holistic approach to answering it, focusing not only on the scientific applications and the benefits, but also the risks that come with it, in a dedication section of its own. Another difference is that you can see the chain of reasoning at any given time. Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental is, once again, opaque, though its segment-wise breakdown was more comprehensive. Another crucial difference is that Gemini’s answers appear more restrained and academically-inclined, while Grok-3 takes a more libertarian approach at explaining complex terms. It’s hard to declare which AI model is superior, but according to benchmarks shared by xAI, Grok-3 has topped Google, OpenAI, DeepSeek, and Anthropic’s AI models on multiple evaluation charts.
