  3. Canada beats US in revenge hockey rematch played on political thin ice Canada beats US in revenge hockey rematch played on political thin ice Canada has beaten the United States after the two countries battled it out on the rink in a championship game that proved to be about more than just ice hockey. The 4 Nations Face Off final ended 3-2 in overtime. On any ordinary day, this fixture would have been a significant one for the two neighbouring countries who have long been friendly rivals on the ice. But heating up the rivalry this time was the looming threat of an economically damaging trade war, as well as Donald Trump’s persistent musings to annex Canada and make it the 51st state. Trump himself was invited to attend the game in Boston by Team USA’s general manager Bill Guerin. The US president was unable to make it, but made a point of calling the team to wish them good luck. He also repeated his desire to absorb Canada, writing in a Truth Social post ahead of the game that he hoped the country “will someday, maybe soon, become our cherished and very important, Fifty First State”. Canada’s public safety minister David McGuinty later told reporters he took Trump’s quip as a sign that the president was “worried about the outcome” of the game. After Canada’s victory, outgoing PM Justin Trudeau – dubbed “Governor Trudeau” by Trump – posted on X: “You can’t take our country – and you can’t take our game.” For fans across North America, the final was a “dream match-up,” ice hockey writer Daniel Nugent-Bowman told the BBC. Not since the 2014 Winter Olympics had the top men’s ice hockey players from Canada and the US faced off in such a consequential game. Both countries boast some of the biggest stars in the National Hockey League (NHL), like Canadians Mitch Marner and Connor McDavid, and Americans Auston Matthews and Jack Eichel. The game was a chance for this new generation of players to prove themselves. But in Canada, the game was also a personal one, giving both die-hard and casual fans an opportunity to bask in national pride at a time when the country’s sovereignty looks to be threatened by its closest neighbour. The first game between Canada and the US of this tournament, played on 15 February in Montreal, saw the American national anthem booed by ********* fans, despite the announcer asking fans beforehand – in both English and French – to show respect to the opposing team. Vocal protests of the US anthem have become a common sight at sports games in Canada over the past month since Trump threatened a 25% tariff on all ********* goods. When it came to singing the ********* anthem, fans – including ********* Prime Minister Justin Trudeau – belted it out at the top of their lungs. Three fist fights then broke out on the ice in the first nine seconds of the game between the American and ********* players. It was an astonishing sight, even by ice hockey standards where fights are common. Matthew Tkachuk, a Team USA player who was among those involved in the brawls, told reporters afterwards that his team needed to deliver a message that “It’s our time right now.” Perhaps the loudest message sent that day was Team USA’s decisive 3-1 win against Canada. Few Canadians would dispute how integral ice hockey is to the country’s national identity. The sport has served as a backdrop to some of the most patriotic moments in Canada’s history, like Sidney Crosby’s overtime gold medal goal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Historically, Canada has had the upper hand against the US. The two countries have met 20 times in best-on-best tournaments since the 1976 Canada Cup, with Canada winning 14 of those games. 7. Hong Kong’s main opposition party to dissolve Hong Kong’s main opposition party to dissolve EPA Party chairman Lo Kin-hei addressed reporters at a late night press conference on Tuesday The leaders of Hong Kong’s Democratic Party have announced plans to dissolve what was once the city’s largest opposition group. Members will soon vote on the final decision on whether to shut down the 31-year-old party, chairman Lo Kin-hei said. The party has been struggling to survive following moves by China to crack down on dissent in the city in the wake of the 2019 protests. Beijing and Hong Kong’s government have argued that such moves were necessary for national security. As part of the crackdown, Beijing overhauled the former British colony’s polling systems. The so-called “patriots law” was passed in Hong Kong in 2021 that ensured only people regarded as loyal to the ********** regime in Beijing could serve as lawmakers or local councillors in the semi-autonomous territory. This law effectively barred the Democratic Party from taking part in elections. At a late-night press conference on Tuesday after a party meeting, Mr Lo said the party’s leaders had made the call to wind down based on the “current political situation”. “Developing democracy in Hong Kong is always difficult, and it’s especially difficult in the past few years,” Mr Lo said to reporters. He did not comment when asked if the party’s leaders’ decision had been made under political pressure. The party has set up a work group for the shutdown process. At least 75% of its members attending an upcoming general meeting will have to approve the move before it is final. A date for that meeting is yet to be set. On Wednesday, Hong Kong government adviser ******* Ip accused the Democratic Party of pursuing an agenda that opposed China and “constantly causing trouble inside and outside parliament”. “Therefore I am not surprised at all that they have been losing supporters in recent years… the Democratic Party has already reached a dead end,” said Ms Ip, co-convener of Hong Kong’s cabinet-like Executive Council. The Democratic Party was notable for having rare direct negotiations with the Liaison Office – the ******** ********** government’s representation in Hong Kong – in 2010, to discuss plans for more liberal elections. Its younger members, however, saw those negotiations as a betrayal. The move triggered a split while the party lost support. It subsequently regained strength and became the most successful opposition political force in the city after acquiring the most seats in the 2019 local council elections, which took place during the violent anti-government protests. A number of the Democratic Party’s members – including prominent pro-democracy figures Helena Wong, Lam Cheuk-ting, Wu Chi-wai and Albert Ho – are among the Hong Kong 47 group of campaigners jailed under the controversial national security law. Another member, former legislator Ted Hui, is now living in Australia in exile and is wanted by the Hong Kong government for alleged national security offences. Earlier this week a court issued an order to confiscate his assets and money in Hong Kong, which are held by his family and a law firm. In December, Hong Kong stripped the honorary Justice of the Peace title from Martin Lee KC, a key founder of the Democratic Party, after the veteran barrister lost his appeal against an unauthorised assembly conviction. 9. Delta releases info about crew for flight that crashed, flipped in Toronto Delta releases info about crew for flight that crashed, flipped in Toronto Delta Air Lines has revealed information about the crew on board a flight from Minneapolis that crashed and flipped upside down at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday. Officials say the captain was hired by Mesaba Airlines in October 2007, which merged with Pinnacle Airlines in 2012 to form Endeavor Air, a subsidiary of Delta. Additionally, he has served as an active duty captain and in pilot training and flight safety capacities. CBS News learned the first officer graduated from a university with an accredited and well-respected aviation program, and so was able to start working with fewer than 1,500 hours under a Restricted Air Transport Pilot certificate. She crossed the 1,500-hour mark and earned her full ATP certificate in January 2023, which is the highest-level pilot certification in the U.S., before completing training last April, and has been flying for Endeavor since then. Delta says her flight experience “exceeded the minimum requirements” set by federal regulations. She passed all of her check rides and there were “no red flags” about her pilot skills, a source familiar told CBS News. A Delta plane sits on its roof after crashing upon landing at Toronto Pearson Airport in Toronto, Ontario, on Feb. 17, 2025. / Credit: GEOFF ROBINS/AFP via Getty Images Delta added that claims spreading online alleging the captain and first officer had failed training events were false, and both crew members are Federal Aviation Administration certified for their positions. “All these pilots train for these conditions,” Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said in an exclusive interview with CBS Mornings. “They fly under all kinds of conditions at all the airports in which we rate, so there’s nothing specific with respect to experience that I’d look to.” What caused Monday’s ****** remains under investigation by the ********* Transportation Safety Board, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration. On Tuesday, officials confirmed that the aircraft’s ****** box has been recovered. The plane operated by Endeavor Air struck the landing strip as it arrived at Toronto Airport at about 1:15 p.m. CST, according to Delta. Images and video of the ****** showed the CRJ-900 aircraft catching fire when it hit the pavement and proceeding to turn sideways while sliding across the airfield, losing its tail and both wings along the way. On Wednesday, a Delta spokesperson said the airline is offering $30,000 to passengers who were aboard the flight. A spokesperson for the company says the Delta Care Team is telling passengers that “this gesture has no strings attached and does not affect rights.” As of Thursday, all 21 passengers injured in the ****** have been released from the hospital. 12. The destinations trying to ban cruise ships and their ‘low-cost clientele’ The destinations trying to ban cruise ships and their ‘low-cost clientele’ This year has barely started and, already, the first warning shots have been fired across the bows of the cruise industry as more ports draw up battle lines banning passenger ships or hitting them with punitive taxes. The French Riviera city of Nice led the latest high-profile assault last month after mayor Christian Estrosi unexpectedly declared that he intended to bar large ships from calling at the glitzy resort and its near neighbour Villefranche-sur-Mer, which is a popular stop on Mediterranean itineraries. Just four days after castigating cruise ships as “monsters of the seas” that “pollute and dump their low-cost clientele”, Estrosi signed an official decree prohibiting vessels carrying more than 900 passengers from calling at either port from July 1. The swiftness of this bombshell, which the mayor had deemed necessary to stem overtourism and pollution, has left mainstream lines such as Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International facing the prospect of having to hurriedly amend itineraries. Villefranche-sur-Mer, near Nice, is a popular stop on Mediterranean itineraries – Getty Not surprisingly, his drastic action prompted criticism from cruise industry body Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), which in a blunt rebuttal accused him of “unfairly stigmatising” the industry and its passengers. It has also attracted opposition from Villefranche’s mayor Christophe Trojani, who railed against the ban on French TV, reportedly restating his support for the town’s previously-agreed limit of one ship visit per day for vessels holding up to 3,500 guests. Other tourist officials have voiced concerns too, citing the €600 million benefit that cruising brings to the region and the positive efforts being made to usher in more sustainable cruising practices. So it seems this is far from a united front. Yet Nice’s outspoken mayor is just one of the latest opponents to nail their colours to the mast against this industry. Across the pond, a similar scenario has been playing out at the New England port of Belfast in Maine where, according to the Bangor Daily News, officials have voted to draw up a ban on ships carrying more than 50 passengers. Christian Estrosi, the mayor of Nice, intends to bar large ships from calling at the neighbouring Villefranche-sur-Mer – Alamy Admittedly, this port town is a minnow compared to its popular higher-profile neighbours, Portland and Bar Harbor, the latter already restricts ship calls, but it illustrates the direction of travel and rising zeal of destinations to either clampdown or cash in on this booming sector. A case in point is Iceland, which last month introduced a daily tax of 2,500 Icelandic krona, equating to around £14 per passenger, which the government says will go towards the country’s infrastructure and sustainability measures. However, the scale and level of the new fee, which is said to represent a five-fold increase on previous charges, has prompted complaints from cruise companies, with some cancelling port visits and the CLIA branding the move “a cause for concern”. In Iceland, a daily tax of around £14 per passenger came into effect on Jan 1 – Alamy Cruises to Iceland have soared in popularity in recent years, but it is predicted the new tax will have a detrimental impact, with round-Iceland voyages being the hardest hit as these can include as many as six calls with an overnight stay in Reykjavik, adding as much as £114 to the bill for each guest. Norway is also reported to be looking at a similar measure, with officials at the country’s ministry of trade and industry currently debating how a passenger fee might be incorporated as part of a general tourism tax. These countries have joined a growing cohort of destinations determined to turn the tide against the increasing pressures brought by the cruise industry’s seemingly unstoppable growth and ever-larger ships. It also begs the question of who will be next to bring down the shutters. It’s a scenario that the CLIA is keen to avoid, citing its work with the Mediterranean ports of Palma and Dubrovnik as examples where co-operation between the local authorities and the cruise sector helped to manage ship visits and passenger arrivals. In Venice, only vessels up to a maximum of 25,000 tonnes can now dock in the city – Getty The association also points out that in cities such as Barcelona, Venice and Amsterdam, cruise guests account for less than five per cent of total visitors. “More than 2,500 ports across the world welcomed cruise ships last year,” said Andy Harmer, the CLIA’s *** and Ireland managing director. “Cruise lines work in partnership with the ports they visit, benefiting the local community and allowing the local destination to flourish. “It is one of the only forms of tourism which allows destinations to prepare years before guests arrive, which allows them, and local businesses, to plan in advance and give passengers the best possible experience when they go ashore.” The European destinations restricting cruise ships or considering curbs1. Venice Only vessels up to a maximum of 25,000 tonnes can now dock in the city. 2. Amsterdam The number of cruise ship visits is to be capped at 100 per year in 2026 as the Dutch city reduces numbers before banning them completely when a new cruise terminal opens outside the city by 2035. 3. Barcelona The cruise hub has already curbed cruise activity by closing one of its terminals and capping the number of ships to seven at any one time. 4. Bordeaux Ship numbers have been curtailed following complaints they are an eyesore and cause pollution. Last summer the city’s mayor called for a total ban and there are proposals to relocate the cruise dock away from the city centre. 5. Balearics Under a five-year agreement struck in 2021, three ships can call at Palma each day, with only one carrying more than 5,000 passengers. A new agreement is due to be thrashed out for next year, with critics pushing for limits to be reduced. Ibiza’s three-ship daily cap was tightened last year when legislators announced that no more than two ships will be allowed to dock at the same time 6. Nice/Villefranche-sur-Mer A ban on ships carrying more than 900 passengers will come into effect in summer 2025. 7. Santorini The Greek government has announced a €20 a head charge for cruise visitors, starting this year, and it is enforcing an 8,000 passenger daily cap on cruise arrivals. Cruise visitors to Santorini will be charged €20 a head – alamy 8. Mykonos Similarly, cruise visitors will each be charged €20 and there are plans to cap cruise arrivals too, though no specifics have been announced. 9. Marseilles While there are no official restrictions on cruise ship visits, their presence is a thorny issue that has prompted protests and a petition which attracted more than 50,000 signatures in 2022. 10. Dubrovnik A cap on cruise visits allows just two ships (carrying no more than 8,000 passengers) to dock each day. 11. Zeebrugge The Belgian port limits cruise ships to two a day to help control tourist numbers to the nearby chocolate-box city of Bruges. 12. Valencia The city has announced that it will start banning mega-ships from 2026. 13. Iceland A daily tax of 2,500 Icelandic krona, equating to approximately £14 per passenger, came into effect on January 1. 14. Norway An increasing clampdown on ships sailing in the waters off Norway and Svalbard with limits on factors including ship size and emissions. However, plans to ban all but zero-emission ships from the Norwegian fjords next year have been relaxed. While the rules will still come into force for smaller vessels under 10,000 tonnes, larger ships have been given an extension until January 1, 2032. The nation is also reported to be eyeing a cruise tourism tax. Five places beyond Europe where opposition to cruise ships is growing1. Maine Since 2022, cruise visitors to Bar Harbor have been limited to 1,000 a day, but there have been legal challenges by local businesses wanting to increase the daily cap. In nearby Belfast, residents have voted to ban ships carrying more than 50 passengers. 2. Key West This Florida Keys hamlet has been the site of a bitter on-going battle between locals and environmental groups who want to ban large ships and businesses, and others wanting to maintain them. At the last count, Florida governor Ron DeSantis approved a new long-term lease for a cruise ship pier catering for large ships. Famed for its pristine beaches, Key West attracts a high number of cruise vessels – Susanne Kremer 3. Mexico The country made waves when it announced last December that it would introduce a $42 “immigration fee” per passenger from January 1. The resulting outcry from the cruise industry and other interested parties prompted it to delay implementation until July 1 this year. 4. French Polynesia Having previously banned cruise ships holding more than 3,500 guests, the islands abandoned this pledge in 2023 as it sought to increase visitor figures, though Bora Bora has maintained its daily limit of 1,200 passengers. 5. Alaska A vote for “Ship-free Saturdays” in Juneau was defeated last October. However, a voluntary limit of no more than five large ships in port each day still stands. Another agreement, due to take effect in 2026, will limit passenger arrivals to 16,000 daily, aside from Saturdays when the limit is 12,000. 15. Familiar face becomes foe in Hooper’s comeback game Familiar face becomes foe in Hooper’s comeback game Michael Hooper will make his long-awaited return to 15-a-side rugby in Osaka on Saturday, coming face to face with former Wallabies coach Dave Rennie. Hooper’s side Verblitz will tackle the Kobe Steelers in Japan Rugby League One on Saturday. The former Wallabies captain, a contentious omission from Eddie Jones’ squad for the 2023 World Cup, hasn’t laced up the boots for a 15-a-side game in 18 months. There has been no suggestion that a Wallabies recall could be on the cards, but Rugby Australia boss Phil Waugh has already flagged the prospect of Hooper playing for the trans-Tasman XV that will face the Lions in a tour game on July 12. “I haven’t spoken to Hoops, but I imagine if he was available, he’d be a strong option as far as being a hugely experienced player with a high profile,” Waugh told the Sydney Morning Herald in January. Hooper has recently featured in the TV punditry box after a brief flirtation with rugby sevens, announcing his retirement in 2024. The 33-year-old revealed in January he was linking up with Verblitz, the team he played 10 matches for while on sabbatical in 2021. Ironically the star flanker is restarting his career against the team guided by Rennie. Rennie coached Hooper in the Test arena, retaining him as skipper after taking charge of the Wallabies in 2020. Hooper appeared in 125 Tests for the Wallabies between 2012 and 2023, a record 69 of them as skipper. The veteran arrived at the Verblitz training base in Aichi to join a playing roster that includes the code-hopping former Sydney Roosters centre Joe Manu, who has scored five tries in eight appearances since his switch to rugby union. Hooper replaced injured South African star Pieter Steph du Toit as Verblitz’s third overseas international and will need to make a major impact quickly to help revive a season that is listing badly. Currently 10th in the 12-team league, Verblitz have won just once, and are only one place above the relegation positions as the season reaches its halfway stage. At the same point last term, they had won four out of seven games, but still didn’t make the cut for the playoffs at season’s end. 16. US says it will drop immigration case against SpaceX US says it will drop immigration case against SpaceX By Luc Cohen (Reuters) – The U.S. Department of Justice on Thursday said it would drop a case accusing Elon Musk’s space technology company SpaceX of refusing to hire certain immigrants. The Justice Department last month signaled it could back away from the case, brought during Democratic President Joe Biden’s term. Musk, a top adviser to Republican President Donald Trump, is leading a commission tasked with identifying waste in the federal government. In a Thursday court filing in Brownsville, Texas, government lawyers asked a judge to end a pause in proceedings so they could file a notice of dismissal of the case. The Justice Department said it would dismiss the case with prejudice, meaning it could not be brought again. Texas-based SpaceX and the Justice Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Justice Department in August 2023 filed an administrative complaint alleging SpaceX from 2018 to 2022 routinely discouraged asylum recipients and refugees from applying for jobs and refused to consider them. At the time, the department said SpaceX wrote in job postings and public statements that it could only hire U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents because of U.S. export control laws. The department said export control laws did not impose such restrictions. SpaceX has denied wrongdoing. The company said in a November 16, 2023, court filing that export laws impose “strict limitations on who it can employ.” “SpaceX follows strict policies and procedures to both ensure compliance with all export control laws and regulations and also prevent any unlawful discrimination,” the company said. SpaceX sued to block the administrative complaint, which would be heard in-house by an administrative judge. The company said DOJ administrative judges are improperly appointed by the U.S. attorney general because they are granted powers that should be reserved only for officials appointed by the president. A judge had temporarily blocked DOJ from pursuing the case while it weighed arguments from both sides. Trump and Musk have both been critical of the powers of federal agencies, including those like DOJ with in-house enforcement proceedings. On his first day in office, Trump declared ******** immigration a national emergency. He has stepped up deportations and issued a broad ban on asylum claims. 18. Senate hopeful vows to keep ‘**** projects’ off parkland Senate hopeful vows to keep ‘**** projects’ off parkland Adelaide’s unique city parklands must be protected from development through World Heritage listing, according to Jacqui Lambie Network senate candidate Rex Patrick. Mr Patrick, who served in the Senate from 2017-2022, has pledged to be a “senator for the parklands” and wants to use the chamber as a megaphone directed at both state and federal governments to have the space nominated for heritage listing. “The Adelaide parklands and the city layout, designed by Colonel William Light some 188 years ago, is in grave jeopardy from state governments past, present and future using what they consider ‘free land’ for their **** political projects,” Mr Patrick said on Friday. “It’s the only city in the world that sits inside a park,” he said during a visit to the site where the new Adelaide Aquatic Centre is being built. The old aquatic centre was demolished to make way for a $135 million complex. The government has pledged to return more than 1000sq m to the parklands after the centre is built, but Mr Patrick said “significant petitions” had campaigned for it to be moved to a greenfields site or by acquiring land elsewhere. “Each of the ideas that governments come up with for the parklands are generally good ideas,” he said. “The problem is, over 100 years of good ideas, we’re seeing the parklands disappear. We look at a place like New York. The governor of New York would not do to Central Park what we’re doing to our parklands.” There have been calls since 2009 for the parklands to be listed as a World Heritage site “but no one’s been a political champion of that”, Mr Patrick said. Both the South *********** government and Adelaide City Council nominally support the goal of securing World Heritage listing for the parklands, but Mr Patrick said “neither have done anything for years, and they have conspicuously failed to engage the *********** government in pursuing the cause with UNESCO”. “No one minds temporary events taking place on the parklands. Jackie and I were at the Fringe (festival) last night, a fantastic use of the parklands.” Jacqui Lambie said she was “extremely jealous of Adelaide”. “We don’t have this in Hobart, and the only bit of parkland that we have left, we are now fighting for,” she said. “We want a football team … but we don’t want this new stadium, it’s the last bit of our parkland left, and that should be left for our kids, and should be a playground for our kids, not for our politicians, they have no social conscience.” “I come to Adelaide and I go, ‘well, this is just great’. You can basically walk outside of any house, and here you are in the parklands. Nobody else in the world has that.” Source link #Senate #hopeful #vows #**** #projects #parkland Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  19. Elon Musk’s private security detail deputized by U.S. Marshals Service, sources say Elon Musk’s private security detail deputized by U.S. Marshals Service, sources say Members of Elon Musk’s private security detail have been deputized by the U.S. Marshals Service, granting them certain rights and protections of federal law enforcement agents, four sources familiar with the move confirmed to CBS News Thursday. The move comes after several people within Musk’s orbit relayed a heightened concern about safety for the tech billionaire, including several death threats in recent weeks. The Tesla CEO turned Trump adviser referenced that concern while on stage at a conservative gathering outside Washington, D.C., on Thursday. “President Bukele from El Salvador, who managed to put in prison like a hundred thousand murderous thugs, and he called me,” Musk recounted to activists gathered at the Conservative Political Action Conference. “‘I am worried about your security,'” he said the Central American leader told him. “I’m like, ‘Dude, you are worried about my security?'” “It’s not enormous,” Musk added of his security detail. “Maybe it should be *******.” Musk was tapped by President Trump to head the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. Since Mr. Trump took office last month Musk’s team has gone about slashing thousands of federal positions across numerous agencies. DOGE has also stoked controversy by seeking access to sensitive government data. In a statement late Thursday, Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi referred CBS News to DOGE’s communications office. “While we are not able to comment on the specifics of our protective operations, Secret Service protocols strictly prohibit private security services from being armed within the Treasury Building, Eisenhower Executive Office Building or the White House,” Guglielmi said in a statement. The U.S. Marshals Service routinely deputizes police. During President Trump’s inauguration, 4,000 officers from outside of Washington, D.C. — across 178 different law enforcement and police agencies — were sworn in and deputized by the U.S. Marshals to assist in protection of the nation’s capital. However, the move to deputize private security officers, who are not sworn law enforcement officials, is considered unorthodox, raising eyebrows among officials familiar with the move. It was not immediately apparent what authorities Musk’s team would be granted, but special deputies are typically permitted to carry weapons on federal grounds and carry out arrests. CBS News has reached out to the White House, Justice Department and U.S. Marshals Service for comment. CNN was first to report the news. It remains unclear why the White House did not issue Musk Secret Service protection. The agency could technically assign a protective detail to anyone with an executive order from Mr. Trump. Along with the president, vice president and first and second families, Secret Service also provides protection to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, among other top White House officials. The U.S. Marshals are responsible for protecting more than 2,700 sitting judges and approximately 30,300 federal prosecutors and court officials, along with members of the public who visit and work in federal courthouses nationwide. Among those under their protection is Attorney General Pam Bondi. Nicole Sganga Nicole Sganga is a CBS News reporter covering homeland security and justice. 20. How a Hong Kong Artist Got Fired From McDonald’s How a Hong Kong Artist Got Fired From McDonald’s On a recent eight-hour shift at a McDonald’s in Hong Kong, Luke Ching, 52, wiped tables, cleared trays of half-eaten fries, emptied cups of soda and milk tea and lugged bulging trash bags to the dumpster. For him, the main goal of the part-time work was not making ends meet. It was research for his main pursuit: using art to advocate for better treatment of people in menial jobs in a city with one of the widest income gaps in the world. That project came to an abrupt end last month when he was fired after publicly calling on McDonald’s Hong Kong to reinstate paid meal breaks for employees at its local outlets. Undeterred, Mr. Ching is pushing ahead — even as the scope for broader political protest has shrunk in the city. “Many people have accepted that they’re not allowed to speak critically about their workplace. But employees don’t exist just to drive profit,” Mr. Ching said in an interview. “We have the right to express ourselves in public.” Over the past two decades, his campaigns have cut across the worlds of art and activism, gaining him a wide following of supporters as well as some online detractors, who call him attention-seeking and gimmicky. The workplace has been both muse and canvas as he has agitated for everything from stools for museum guards to more consideration for the people who clean the subway. Hong Kong’s minimum wage — about $5 an hour — barely covers basic living costs. There are no collective bargaining laws, and employers are not legally obligated to recognize labor unions, so relatively few do. Unions, nevertheless, had long been politically active, regularly joining demonstrations to pressure the local government. Such protests became more common as people in Hong Kong resisted what they saw as efforts to erode the “high degree of autonomy” ******** leaders had promised after Britain returned its former colony in 1997. But a year of antigovernment protests, at times violent, led to a crackdown by Beijing in 2020 and the imposition of a national security law that has chilled dissent and led many activist unions to disband. Some labor organizers in Hong Kong have been convicted of violating the law over their pro-democracy activism and sentenced to prison. Lee Cheuk Yan, a former lawmaker and labor champion, has been jailed since 2021 awaiting trial, and the government has offered a bounty for the arrest of another such activist, Christopher Mung, who now lives in the United Kingdom. Steve Tsang, director of the SOAS China Institute in London, said that, on its own, labor activism is not likely to be seen by the Hong Kong government as a potential threat to national security, especially if it targets big companies rather than government bodies. “The difficulty is that in Hong Kong, what you do and how it will be treated is not always as clear,” he said. “Therefore, people are becoming a lot more cautious about what they can and cannot say.” Pressure continues to mount: The city on Wednesday proposed amendments that would empower the government to reject new unions on national security grounds. Mr. Ching said that his activism has always focused on livelihood issues, and he does not think there’s anything wrong or risky about what he does. Things got tense at times during the Covid pandemic, he said, when authorities were cracking down on anything that might attract a crowd. Police searched and questioned him, he said, as he stood in a subway station wearing a garbage bag over his cleaner’s uniform, with “Lowest pay. Highest risk. Least support” written in tape. The company that runs the subway, MTR, later increased its hourly pay for contract cleaners. Mr. Ching has a master’s degree in fine art from the ******** University of Hong Kong and has participated in exhibitions and residencies around the world, including last year in New York, where he collected cans and other recyclable items as part of an effort to realize “the artist as a citizen.” Some of his work — video, photos and sculpture — is housed in the collections of museums including M+ in Hong Kong and the Open Eye Gallery in Liverpool, England. His project “Undercover Worker” was shortlisted for the Visible Award, a prize for socially engaged artwork, in 2019. For about a decade, he taught art part-time at his alma mater and at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, including a popular “creative citizen” course, where his students trained to become security guards and reported on their experiences. (His inspiration for community activism, he said, dates back to 2007, when people chained themselves together to try to save a historic ferry pier from demolition.) He set aside teaching last August and raised $25,700 in crowd-funded donations so that he could spend more time making art, working briefly at fast-food chains, a ******** butcher shop and as a cleaner at Disneyland Hong Kong. Though he uses his real name, he said his managers usually were not aware of his activism and were more concerned with filling vacancies. While working at McDonald’s, Mr. Ching, who is married with a teenage daughter, posted diarylike entries on Instagram and Facebook. To illustrate the repetitive toil during a typical shift, he tracked his step count and made images of himself picking up endless rows of half-emptied cups. Mr. Ching said he was drawn to study McDonald’s because customers from all walks of life used it as a communal space, bringing to it a Hong Kong flair. At his former branch in the middle-class neighborhood of **** Po, elderly regulars brought their own insulated mugs, newspapers and novels as they settled into their regular seats, refilling from the free hot water every so often. Mr. Ching said that he also admired how, like him, the CEO of McDonald’s Hong Kong, ****** Lai, had spent several months working as a low-level employee. He brought up this experience in an open letter to her that was published in the Hong Kong broadsheet Ming Pao in January. “You must know that without mealtime pay, countless colleagues return to work after a hasty meal or forgo their rest time,” he said. He was fired within weeks. Representatives for the company, owned by a ******** private equity firm, did not respond to requests from The New York Times for comment. A McDonald’s spokesperson told local media that Mr. Ching had leaked internal operational and commercial information, and that he had been advised against doing so. Mr. Ching denied those allegations, saying that he had merely shared his observations about his workplace. Some observers say that as Mr. Ching’s ambitions have broadened, his work has become less focused. Wong Wai Yin, an artist in Hong Kong who wrote her Ph.D. dissertation on Mr. Ching, said at times it was difficult to understand his goals at McDonald’s — until he got fired. “There were many ketchup packets and selfies,” Ms. Wong said. Wan Pak Kin, an organizer at the Catering and Hotels Industries Employees General Union, said Mr. Ching’s tactics balanced out the more hard-line approach of traditional labor unions. “He knows how to find a middle ground between praise and criticism,” Mr. Wan said. “He examines relationships and bonding among colleagues. He becomes part of the community.” This month, Mr. Ching, Mr. Wan and three other organizers representing labor and environmental groups said they would form a coalition called the Alliance for My McDonald’s. Wearing McDonald’s party hats at a news conference, the organizers said they hoped to push McDonald’s to pay attention to suggestions from both employees and the wider public. Mr. Ching said he plans to spend more time on the front lines to campaign for small and meaningful changes and strengthen relationships among workers. “I want the revolution to be in our daily work,” he said. 23. Demolition crews tore down part of the Myrtle Beach Mall. What is opening there? Demolition crews tore down part of the Myrtle Beach Mall. What is opening there? Demolition at one of the Myrtle Beach area’s malls is making way for a new restaurant to open. In recent weeks, demolition started on part of the Myrtle Beach Mall at 10177 North Kings Highway near Briarcliffe Acres. The project will allow a planned restaurant to open there. In October 2024, FACE Amusement Group — announced that a Food Network personality and restaurant owner, Guy Fieri, planned to open a new Downtown Flavortown at the Myrtle Beach Mall. In an email to The Sun News, a spokesperson for FACE Amusement Group said that demolition is part of the Flavortown project. They added that construction starts soon, and the eatery will be 50,000 square feet. Downtown Flavortown does not yet have an opening date. A post on the Myrtle Beach Mall’s Facebook page said the grand opening was “several months away.” The post added that the restaurant replaces the now-closed JCPenney location. The Sun News filed a Freedom of Information Act request with Horry County for the building permit and renderings from the project. The county provided the permit application but did not provide the renderings. A spokesperson for the county said the renderings were copyrighted materials and exempt from FOIA requests. The permit application states that the Flavortown project’s construction value is $8 million. The project contractor is Charleston, SC-based Arnett Construction, LLC, and the architect is Knoxville, Tenn.-based Johnson Architecture, Inc. When The Sun News contacted Michael Schmidt of Johnson Architecture, Inc., he declined to comment. A representative for Arnett Construction, LLC, also declined to comment. The project is part of ongoing efforts to revitalize the Myrtle Beach Mall, which has seen stores close and many empty storefronts left without tenants. In April 2023, Horry County Land Records shows the Tennessee-based Kings Highway Partners I LLC bought the mall for $7.8 million. The LLC is associated with the Johnson City, Tenn.-based FACE Amusement Group, as the Tennessee Secretary of State’s website shows that FACE Amusement Group CEO Bucky Mabe is the registered agent for the limited liability corporation. 25. Growing ranks of homeless seen as society in decline Growing ranks of homeless seen as society in decline Australians believe growing homelessness is emblematic of societal decline, which could turn housing action into significant vote winner at the federal election. The nation’s housing crisis is quickly evolving into a emergency with 40 per cent of Australians from 24 battleground seats witnessing an increase in homelessness in their communities during the past year, Redbridge polling found. As a key contributor to the cost of living, housing is expected to be one of the most pressing matters at the federal election. But this heightened awareness has turned the issue into a mark of society’s ills. “It’s very much symbolic of generational wealth inequality and indicative of a feeling of economic disparity and disempowerment,” Redbridge director Simon Welsh told AAP. “There’s this broad sense that things are not going well: we’re seeing Nazis in the street, we’re seeing anti-Semitism, we are seeing our hospitals under pressure, we are seeing our roads deteriorate. “In this broader sense of social and economic decline, homelessness becomes another data point.” Policies that would prevent Australians from sleeping rough are popular across the political spectrum. Almost nine in 10 respondents supported increasing investment in frontline services for those fleeing domestic violence, and children who are unable to safely return to their families. Funding for organisations that help homeless people stay under a roof was backed by eight in 10 respondents. “The cost-of-living crisis is so deep and people’s rents are taking up so much of their incomes that people feel very close to homelessness,” Kate Colvin of Homelessness Australia told AAP. “Seeing people who are homeless probably reminds them of that vulnerability.” Despite this, more than 120,000 Australians were not getting the necessary support when they encounter homelessness, the organisation’s analysis found. Andrew Stewart, who is experiencing homelessness in Sydney, says there are major systemic issues preventing people from being housed. There is a shortage in housing, inefficiencies within money allocated to homelessness and many who sleep rough are not able to make their voices heard. “But we’ve got no say,” he told AAP.
