WAFL: Will Hussey, son of cricket legend Michael, named in East Fremantle’s colts leadership group
WAFL: Will Hussey, son of cricket legend Michael, named in East Fremantle’s colts leadership group
The son of one of the finest cricketers Western Australia has ever produced has been given a fresh nod in a burgeoning football career.
Will Hussey, the 19-year-old son of *********** Test great Michael, has been named in East Fremantle’s colts leadership group.
And he has been elevated to the role without even playing a game for the club. Hussey ruptured his ACL at the start of last season and his only appearance for the Sharks was in a WAFL colts pre-season game.
And he is in there alongside another son-of-a-gun, Oli McManus, the son of former Fremantle and Sharks great Shaun.
In a video posted to the club’s social media, Hussey said his main goal was to get back on the park.
“My main goal would be playing a game, because I did my ACL at the start of last year, so not ideal,” he said.
“More team success, I’m just really excited to see how we can go as a team, so big goal is to get into the finals and I think that would be real cool if we can.

“There’s a real buzz amongst the boys so we’re all really excited for it.
“For the colts, the boys have been really flying for the first month of pre-season, so to all the fans I just say get down and support us all, it’s really exciting and we can’t wait.”
Hussey was six when his father called time on his 79-match Test career.
McManus has trained with Fremantle’s Next Generation Academy thanks to ties with his father, who captained the club during his 228-game career.
The 18-year-old has played six games for the Sharks’ colts team.

These Republican senators have broken away from Trump after controversial Ukraine post
These Republican senators have broken away from Trump after controversial Ukraine post
Donald Trump has divided Republican senators after branding Volodymyr Zelensky as a “dictator” and blaming the Ukrainian president for starting the war with Russia.
The U.S. president sent shockwaves across both sides of the aisle on Tuesday after an unhinged Truth Social tirade branding Zelensky a “modestly successful comedian” who manipulated the Biden administration for its funding and is doing a “terrible job.”
“A Dictator without Elections, Zelenskyy better move fast or he is not going to have a Country left,” Trump wrote in his rant.
Several GOP senators balked at Trump’s anti-Ukraine rhetoric and have spoken out in defense of Zelenksy, treading a careful line not to alienate the U.S. president.
The Senate’s recent-elected Majority Leader and the chamber’s top Republican, John Thune, disagreed with Trump’s analysis and said that there’s “no question who started the war,” adding that “Russia’s the aggressor here.”
Trump has long threatened to nominate primary challengers against members of his party in both chambers who he feels are going against his wishes.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said that there was ‘no question’ who started the conflict in Ukraine: Putin (AP)
“President Putin is evil, and he has to be stopped,” said Thom Tillis, senator for North Carolina and the moderate Republican who kicked off his 2026 re-election campaign in December and has angered GOP hardliners with his progressive politics.
Tillis also visited Ukraine over the weekend and is lobbying for continued military funding, told reporters.
Asked whether she believed Zelensky to be a dictator, Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski, said: “I do not.”
“To the extent that the White House said that Ukraine started the war, I disagree,” Louisiana Senator John Kennedy told the Associated Press.
Texas Senator John Cornyn also told reporters that he “wouldn’t use the same word.”

Utah Senator John Curtis said that Zelensky and Ukrainians have “stood admirable” against unprovoked Russian aggression.
“I want an end to this war just as much as President Trump does, but it must end on terms that bring lasting stability and peace,” he tweeted. “That means ensuring Vladimir Putin does not walk away with a victory.”
North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer claimed Trump is “factually wrong” to label Zelensky a dictator before praising the president’s ability to negotiate.
Despite some objections, other GOP senators toed the line or fell somewhere in the middle.
After initially placing blame on Russian President Putin “above all others,” South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham tweeted that Trump is “Ukraine’s best hope to end this war honorably and justly.”

The long-time Trump ally added: “I believe he will be successful and he will achieve this goal in the Trump way.”
Speaking to reporters later on Wednesday, Graham aligned with Trump’s comments calling for an election in Ukraine.
Missouri Senator Josh Hawley noted that the U.S. had an election during World War II and said “Democracies have elections.”
Another Missouri senator, Eric Schmitt, told the Associated Press that the “war’s gone on long enough,” before touting Trump as a “master negotiator” that can deliver peace.
Schmitt also told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins that the “American taxpayer is tapped out on the war in Ukraine.”
Trump’s Zelenksy rebuke came a day after he made comments at Mar-a-Lago pointing fingers at Kyiv, not Moscow, for its role in the three-year-long conflict.

A visibly agitated president also commented on Zelenksy’s complaints of not being included in the U.S.-Russia peace talks between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Saudi Arabia.
“Today I heard, ‘Oh, we weren’t invited’ [to Tuesday’s U.S.-Russia talks],” an agitated Trump said at an impromptu press conference on Tuesday. “Well, you’ve been there for three years, you should have ended it three years. You should have never started it, you could have made a deal.”
In addition, Trump poured scorn on Zelensky’s approval ratings and challenged him to call an election stating “We have martial law in Ukraine.” He denied his demand for an election in Ukraine was prompted by the Russians.

iPhone 16e Benchmark Listing Confirms 8GB of RAM, Reveals GPU Performance Days After Launch
iPhone 16e Benchmark Listing Confirms 8GB of RAM, Reveals GPU Performance Days After Launch
iPhone 16e was launched in India and global markets on February 19, and the smartphone has already been listed on a benchmarking website, according to a report. The new iPhone 16e won’t be available to purchase until February 28, but details of the smartphone’s specifications have already surfaced online. Like the other smartphones in the series, the IPhone 16e is equipped with 8GB of RAM, and it features a slightly weaker version of the A18 chip that arrived on the iPhone 16 last year.
iPhone 16e GPU Benchmark Details
A listing for a smartphone with the identifier iPhone 17,5 was listed on Geekbench on Thursday, over a week before the company’s latest model is scheduled to go on *****. The entry was first spotted by MySmartPrice, and it is believed to be a new identifier that pertains to the iPhone 16e and reveals some of its specifications.
According to the listing, the iPhone 16e is equipped with “7.54GB” of RAM. This means that has 8GB of RAM, which allows it to support Apple Intelligence features, unlike the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, which have 6GB of RAM.
The Geekbench listing also reveals that the handset was running on iOS 18.3.1 when the benchmark was run. The entry shows the device has a score of 24,188 points in the Metal benchmark, which measures the graphics performance of Apple’s devices.
It’s worth noting that this score is lower than the average GPU benchmark score for the iPhone 16, which has a score of 27,669 points. Meanwhile, the handset’s GPU score is higher than the iPhone 15 (which has an A16 Bionic chip), which has 22767 points on the Metal benchmark.
The lower Metal benchmark score of the iPhone 16e is not surprising, as the handset has one less GPU core than its more expensive sibling. While the iPhone 16 has a 5-core GPU, the recently unveiled iPhone 16e is equipped with a 4-core GPU, according to details on Apple’s website.
We can expect to see more details about the performance of the iPhone 16e and how it fares against other models in the iPhone 16 series of smartphones in the coming days. The smartphone is now available to preorder and will go on ***** in India and global markets starting February 28.

A Delta flight crashed and overturned while landing in Toronto. Here’s what we know
A Delta flight crashed and overturned while landing in Toronto. Here’s what we know
A Delta Air Lines flight from Minneapolis crashed, turned upside down and caught fire on the runway at Toronto Pearson International Airport while attempting to land Monday, the latest in a string of passenger plane crashes since December.
Video obtained by CNN shows the rear landing gear of the jet buckling and the right wing shearing away in a fireball after the plane landed hard on the runway.
All 80 people on board the CRJ900 twin-jet aircraft survived, but 21 people were taken to hospitals with injuries, Delta said in a statement. By Thursday morning the final passenger that remained hospitalized was released, according to Delta.
The plane briefly skids on its belly before rolling over, sending smoke and powdery snow shooting into the air.
“Oh, no, no, no, no, no!” says the person taking the video, watching from inside a different plane near the runway.
“When we hit, it was just super hard. It hit the ground, and the plane went sideways,” said passenger John Nelson, adding, “It’s amazing that we’re still here.”
“Even now I smell like jet fuel,” Nelson told CNN on Monday night.
By Tuesday afternoon, the plane wreckage was barely recognizable, camouflaged against the ground by snow plastered across the frozen fuselage, its left wing crumpled and right wing missing. Removal of the wreckage was completed Wednesday evening, Delta said.
Monday’s ****** is the latest incident in a deadly year for air travel in North America. Earlier this month, 10 people were killed when a regional airline plane crashed in Alaska.
Less than three weeks ago, 67 were killed when an American Airlines plane collided midair with a US Army ****** Hawk helicopter near Washington, DC. Two days later, a medevac jet crashed in Philadelphia, killing all six on board and one person on the ground.
Those disasters were preceded by deadly crashes in December in South Korea and Kazakhstan.
Here’s what we know:

All 80 passengers and crew survived
Delta Flight 4819, operated by Delta subsidiary Endeavor Air, departed from Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport and crashed at the airport, located mostly in the suburb of Mississauga, west of Toronto, around 2:15 p.m. ET Monday, Delta said in a statement.
“The hearts of the entire global Delta family are with those affected by today’s incident at Toronto-Pearson International Airport,” said Delta CEO Ed Bastian. “I want to express my thanks to the many Delta and Endeavor team members and the first responders on site.”
“I’m incredibly proud of the professionalism of the Endeavor crew members who evacuated the aircraft, as well as the first responders at Toronto Pearson International Airport and the airport leadership team,” Bastian added in a memo to Delta employees obtained by CNN Tuesday.
Deborah Flint, the president and CEO of Toronto Pearson International Airport, also credited the “textbook response” of first responders for helping prevent loss of life.
Delta is offering $30,000 to the passengers involved in the flight, an airline spokesperson told CNN on Wednesday.
“Delta Care Team representatives are telling customers this gesture has no strings attached and does not affect rights,” said Morgan Durrant, a spokesperson for the airline. If all 76 passengers involved took the money, it would add up to a little over $2.2 million.
The airline is continuing to work on identifying and sorting through passengers’ bags removed from the wreckage. In some cases, where potentially harmful fluids are being cleaned from belongings, the process could take weeks, Delta said.

Hard landing left passengers ‘upside down hanging like bats’
Pete Koukov, a passenger on the plane, said he “didn’t know anything was the matter” until they were on the ground.
“We hit the ground, and we were sideways, and then we were upside down hanging like bats,” Koukov told CNN’s Brianna Keilar.
Nick Costigan, who spoke with the Toronto Star, said his “whole window just turned into flame briefly and then it was dark as we slid.” It was “weirdly” quiet once the plane stopped, he told the outlet.
“I took my seat belt off, which I’d obviously left fastened for the landing, and as I took it off, crashed down on to the ceiling which had become the floor,” Pete Carlson, another passenger who is an executive with a Minneapolis health care company, told CNN newsgathering partner CBC.
Paramedics who responded to the ****** treated multiple types of injuries, including back sprains, head lacerations and nausea due to jet fuel fumes, said Cory Tkatch with Peel Regional Paramedic Services.
Video of the ****** does not appear to show the usual “flare” of the jet, where the pilot pulls the nose up just before landing, exposing the wings to more air resistance.
“There was no attempt to flare at all, which slows the plane down,” said CNN aviation analyst Mary Schiavo, a former inspector general of the Department of Transportation.
Koukov said he was able to unbuckle his seat belt, get himself down to the ground and then walk out of the plane, but some others needed help getting down from their seats.
“Just feeling lucky and happy I got to give the person I didn’t know sitting next to me a big hug, that we were OK, and see my friends who are here to pick me up from the airport and give them a big hug,” he said.

Why did the plane overturn?
As of Tuesday afternoon, “It’s far too early to say what the cause of this accident might be,” said Ken Webster, a senior investigator with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
The ****** Monday happened on a gusty day following heavy snowfall.
“On Thursday and Sunday, we got more than 20 inches of accumulated snow,” Flint said Tuesday. That’s more snowfall than the area received all of the previous winter.
“What we can say is the runway was dry, and there was no crosswind conditions,” said Todd Aitken, the airport fire chief, Monday evening.
However, an air traffic controller told the Delta pilot there were winds of 26 mph, gusting up to 38 mph, blowing across the plane’s path at a 40-degree angle, according to a recording of airport tower radio traffic. The wind at Pearson was reportedly blowing snow into the air with a visibility of 5 miles.
Aitken, in a Tuesday briefing, declined to speak more on the weather conditions, deferring further questions due to the ongoing investigation.
The weather conditions may have become treacherous before the pilots were able to adapt, said retired jet pilot Les Abend.
“With blowing snow, it may have changed rapidly, so the airplane that landed ahead of this aircraft may have had a different condition than this particular Delta regional jet,” Abend told CNN’s Kayla Tausche on Tuesday.
The cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder were recovered from the plane, Webster said. The recorders were sent to their lab “for further analysis,” he added, but didn’t say in what condition they were found.
Videos of the ****** could explain why the aircraft overturned after landing, according to Steven Wallace, former director of the FAA’s Office of ****** Investigation.
“You see the right wing fails, but the airplane is still going quite fast, and that left wing is generating a tremendous amount of lift,” Wallace told CNN’s Pamela Brown. “So that immediately causes the airplane to roll inverted. That’s quite clear.”
The runway where the plane crashed is expected to remain closed through at least Thursday evening, according to a notice issued to pilots Tuesday.
“We do expect that the investigators on-site will be reviewing the aircraft on its current configuration on the runway for the next 48 hours,” Flint said Tuesday. Over 20 investigators are on the ground as of Tuesday afternoon, Webster said.
The last major aviation accident at the Toronto airport was nearly two decades ago, on August 2, 2005, according to The Associated Press, when an inbound Air France flight from Paris slid off the runway and burst into flames. All 309 people on board survived.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is leading the investigation with help from the National Transportation Safety Board in the US.
CNN’s Taylor Ward, Tara John, Alexandra Skores, Mitchell McCluskey, Amir Vera, Taylor Romine, Amanda Jackson, Elise Hammond and Karina Tsui contributed to this report.

********* anthem singer changes lyric in response to Trump remarks on making Canada 51st U.S. state
********* anthem singer changes lyric in response to Trump remarks on making Canada 51st U.S. state
The anthem singer who performed the ********* anthem prior to the 4 Nations Face-Off championship game Thursday night changed a lyric in “O Canada” as a rebuke to President Trump’s repeated remarks about making the country the 51st state.
Publicist Adam Gonshor confirmed to CBS News that Chantal Kreviazuk changed the lyric from “in all of us command” to “that only us command.”
During Canada’s 3-2 overtime victory, Kreviazuk told The Associated Press she did it “because I believe in democracy, and a sovereign nation should not have to be defending itself against tyranny and fascism.”
Singer Chantal Kreviazuk performs “O Canada” prior to the 4 Nations Face-Off championship hockey game on Feb. 20, 2025, in Boston.
Charles Krupa / AP
“I’m somebody who grew up on music that spoke to the heart and the moment, and it shaped me as a songwriter and really as a human being,” she added. “I don’t think it would be authentic to me to be given a world stage and not express myself and be true to myself.”
Kreviazuk, who is from Winnipeg, Manitoba, also wrote the phrase “that only us command” with mascara on her left hand. She posted a picture of that on her Instagram with emojis of a ********* flag and a flexed muscle.
“I just put it on there so if I ever had a moment and I kind of froze, I would be able to look at my hand and see it,” Kreviazuk said. “I’d love to see people sort of get inspired and catch the fire and say their heart more in their art. … Sometimes you just got to speak the truth in your art and it’s awesome. That’s what it should be about.”
In the post, Kreviazuk said, “I am sorry if my performance of our national anthem rubbed you the wrong way. … I am sorry if you think that we’d be better off annexed. … We should express our outrage in the face of any abuses of power. … Canada, not unlike Ukraine, is a sovereign nation. *******.”
In a post on X, ********* Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, “You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game.”
The National Hockey League declined comment on the situation.
Fans in Boston lightly booed the song, though it was soon drowned out by Kreviazuk’s singing. The crowd in Montreal booed “The Star-Spangled Banner” prior to U.S. tournament games at Bell Centre last week, more vociferously before the team faced Canada.
Tensions have risen between the neighbors and longtime allies over the past several weeks as Mr. Trump has suggested multiple times since being inaugurated that Canada become the 51st U.S. state, in relation to a trade dispute, and has threatened a series of tariffs. ********* Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that will never happen.
The subject of Canada becoming the 51st state was brought up Thursday during a news conference with David McGuinty, Canada’s Public Safety Minister.
“Sounds like President Trump is worried about the outcome of the hockey game,” McGuinty said. “Canada is a sovereign and independent country. It has been for over 150 years and will remain so. This discussion of 51st state is a non-starter.”
Mr. Trump called the U.S. team prior to their morning skate Thursday to wish players luck in the game. Players told reporters in Boston it was an honor to hear from him, with defenseman Noah Hanifin saying, “Hopefully we can get the win tonight for our country and for Trump.”

Sony Sued Over PS Store Prices Again

Dutch consumer foundation Massaschade & Consument has filed a lawsuit against Sony Interactive Entertainment. Similarly to lawsuits the company faced in other countries, this is due to the company restricting digital game purchases from third party retailers and creating “artificially high prices.”
Dutch consumer foundation claims PS Store has “artificially high prices”
This news comes from Dutch outlet Tweakers (translated by VibrantStorm on ResetEra) in which the foundation claims SIE is abusing the market for its digital games. PlayStation games are only available digitally through the PS Store and cannot be purchased via a code from a third-party retailer, which can be done for platforms like Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S. The foundation’s research found that this has allowed the company to sell digital games at an average of 47% more than its physical releases.
“According to the foundation’s research, digital games cost an average of 47% more than their physical counterparts, despite Sony having lower distribution costs,” reads the translated article. “The organization argues that the closed ecosystem of the PlayStation Store, combined with Sony’s dominant position in the console market, results in what it calls “artificially high prices.”
“Dutch PlayStation users who have made purchases in the PlayStation Store can join the collective claim for free,” continues the article. “The first court hearing is expected later this year. If the claim is upheld, Sony could potentially be forced to open its digital marketplace to other sellers.”
As mentioned in the article, the company faces lawsuits in other countries including Portugal and the United Kingdom. The U.K. Competition Appeals Court greenlit its case as market dominant companies like Sony must ensure fair competition under law. The company previously faced a similar lawsuit in the United States as well.
Will Sony finally be forced to allow other sellers sell digital copies of its games? We’ll just have to wait and see.

NYU College Republicans President Speaks Out After Resigning Over Barron Trump Comment
The president of NYU’s College Republicans has resigned after calling Barron Trump an “oddity on campus.” President Donald Trump’s son is currently attending the New York City school. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the now-former president of the group, Kaya Walker, spoke about what it’s like to have Barron as a fellow student. Now, she is sharing her belief that the remarks were twisted. “My comment to Vanity Fair has been ridiculously misconstrued to suggest that I found Barron Trump’s commuter status to be unusual,” Walker wrote in her resignation letter, which was shared on X. She went on to clarify, “the ‘oddity’ I talked about lies in the unhealthy fascination that people have with a teenager just minding his business by going to college and not at all in Barron Trump himself.”

****** Ops 6 Map Drops a Sneaky Hint, Adding More Fuel to the Rumors of the New Tony Hawk Game
****** Ops 6 Map Drops a Sneaky Hint, Adding More Fuel to the Rumors of the New Tony Hawk Game
Call of Duty: ****** Ops 6 may have just given Tony Hawk fans a big reason to get excited. We just got the latest update for the game which brought back a remastered version of the fan-favorite Grind map and it seems that there’s a little hint hidden in the map. Players have found a sign within the map with the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater logo and the date 03.04.25 on it.

Does that mean we can expect an announcement soon? There are already rumors about a possible remaster of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 after skater Tyshawn Jones recently claimed he’s appearing in a new remaster. March 4 is just around the corner so we won’t have to wait too long to find out what this means.

The Grind map is one of the most popular and beloved maps in Call of Duty’s ****** Ops series. We first saw it in 2012’s ****** Ops 2 and it later returned in ****** Ops 4. We can now enjoy it in ****** Ops 6 but with a surprising twist. Hidden within the skatepark’s shop area, Charlie Intel has discovered a sign with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater logo, with the date March 4, 2025.
Looks like a teaser for something related to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater has been found in ****** Ops 6’s Grind MP map!

The timing of this teaser couldn’t be more interesting. Earlier this month, professional skateboarder Tyshawn Jones stated that he would be appearing in an upcoming Tony Hawk remaster. While he didn’t specify which game, his comments, combined with this latest tease in ****** Ops 6, seem to confirm that Activision is preparing to revive the franchise.
And if this Easter egg wasn’t convincing enough for you, Tony Hawk himself responded to the post with the classic “eyes” emoji. With so many rumors circulating and an official tease now revealed, we can’t wait to see what’s in store in the next two weeks.

The choice of March 4 as the potential announcement date might not be random. If you look at how the date is written, 3/4, it looks like a clever nod to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4. So maybe Activision will finally give us the remastered versions of these beloved games.
It’s a great way to build hype for a new game
Subtle enough to be exciting, obvious enough to not be missed. | Image Credit: Treyarch
The placement of the teaser in ****** Ops 6 is no coincidence. Activision owns both Call of Duty and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. It’s a good marketing tactic to use its most popular franchise as a platform to generate hype. Given the massive player base of the Call of Duty title, there was no way anyone was going to miss it, and we haven’t
If a Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater remaster is indeed on the horizon, it would be a big comeback for the franchise. The first two games had remakes in 202 and were well received, and there is still a strong demand for a classic franchise like this. With Microsoft now owning Activision, we could even see the remaster launch directly on Xbox Game Pass as part of Microsoft’s new strategy.
We have less than two weeks to go until the teased date and we don’t have to wait long to find out what’s in store for the Tony Hawk franchise. It could be a remaster of Pro Skater 3 + 4 or something entirely new but the signs are pointing toward a major announcement.

Why are so many planes crashing? This is what the data says
Why are so many planes crashing? This is what the data says
The last few months have seen a clutch of extraordinary plane crashes. This week, a Delta Airlines plane flipped upside down after a heavy landing at Toronto Airport. All passengers and crew survived the accident.
The Toronto disaster came after a series of dramatic incidents in North America, including the terrible case of American Airlines Flight 5342 which collided with an army helicopter when coming into land at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. There were no survivors.
Days later, a small aircraft fell from the sky above Philadelphia carrying a child who was recovering from life-saving treatment. And a week later, a small plane disappeared in Alaska sparking a widespread search effort. The bodies of the 10 passengers were later discovered.
These events followed a particularly tumultuous Christmas ******* for aviation. On December 25, an Azerbaijan Airlines plane was allegedly struck by missiles in Russian airspace, forcing a ******-landing in Kazakhstan, killing 38 of the 67 on board. Days later a Jeju Air commuter jet collided with a wall at the end of the runway at Muan International Airport, killing all but two of the 181 people on board.
As the cases stack up, we cannot avoid the question: is flying becoming more dangerous? The hard data suggests that the simple answer to this question is “yes”, but when we dig into the statistics we can see that the truth is more nuanced.
How many planes ****** a year?
Air accident records show that 2024 was the deadliest year for air disasters since 2018. There were 16 fatal accidents resulting in the deaths of 333 passengers and crew. This came after 2023, which was one of the safest years for air traffic accidents with just six fatal accidents resulting in the deaths of 115 passengers.
However, it is worth noting that the 2024 fatality figures were looking similar to the year before until the very end of December. The two air disasters in Kazakhstan and South Korea almost tripled the annual fatality count, from 116 to 333. These two disasters turned 2024 from looking like a positive year for aviation safety to one of the worst in a decade.
Last year we did see a higher-than-usual number of accidents involving scheduled passenger services. Sometimes, an entire year will pass with zero fatalities on commercial planes. But in addition to the disasters mentioned above, last year a passenger died on board Singapore Airlines 777-300ER due to turbulence, and a member of cabin crew died during a smoke and fumes incident on board a Swiss Airbus A220-300.
The perception of things getting worse
There has been greater scrutiny around the safety of aviation after a string of high-profile incidents in recent years, particularly on Boeing planes.
Last April, passengers watched on in horror as the engine cowling of a Boeing 737 flapped in the wind and dislodged from the aircraft during take-off. The plane returned safely to Denver International Airport with all passengers unharmed.
This came after a door plug came off an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 at 1,600ft, creating a large hole in the side of the plane and ripping the shirt off a child’s back. One flight attendant reportedly sustained minor injuries in the incident.
The reason that Boeing faces greater scrutiny is that in 2018 and 2019 two Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft crashed – one a Lion Air flight in Indonesia, the other an Ethiopian Airlines flight – killing a total of 346 people. Investigators later discovered the crashes were linked to the activation of a new flight stabilisation feature. After software updates and intensive safety checks, the 737 Max 8 returned to service at the end of 2020.
It is worth considering that incidents have always occurred at 35,000ft, but we have greater awareness of these with the proliferation of smart phones and social media. If every incident, however minor, is captured on video and posted online, the upshot is a skewed sense of flying becoming less safe. But the opposite is in fact true.

What the experts say
Despite the fact that 2024 was the deadliest year for aviation since 2018, the past decade has been by far the safest on record. British and Irish airlines have the best safety records in the world, with both Ryanair and easyJet having never suffered a fatal accident.
John Grant of flight database and statistics company OAG, says: “In 2024 there were over 37 million scheduled flights operated by airlines around the world and the number of major incidents could be counted on two hands.
“Such a level of safe flight completion highlights and confirms that air travel is one of the safest forms of transport available and that the professionalism and technical expertise of the industry continues to ensure that safety remains at the very heart of all flights operated.”
Brian Smith, a pilot who has flown for many decades for commercial and cargo airlines, says: “There have been several recent fatal accidents that understandably raise questions about the overall safety of air travel. Accident trends have followed a positive trajectory over the last 70 years when viewed against the volume of departures. For example, in 1959, there were 40 fatal accidents per one million aircraft departures in the US. Within 10 years this had improved to less than two in every million departures, falling to around 0.1 per million in 2014.
“Giant strides in technology, in particular reliability of the jet engine, sea change improvements in aircraft control systems and in air traffic control, have made air travel the clear winner in terms of safety. So improved has been technology, that human factors like pilot error have overtaken mechanical or system failure as the main cause of accidents.

“The industry, and the organisations that regulate it, have brought about manifest improvements in human factors and pilot interaction with automation, through the introduction of Evidence Based Training (EBT). Pilot training encompasses the study of recent significant events to raise awareness of negative trends and develop strategies to mitigate them.
“There will always be statistical blips, but overall, I believe aviation is still the safest form of travel, and passengers should continue to have confidence in the industry.”
John Strickland, an aviation expert at JLS Consultancy, says: “Flying remains an incredibly safe form of transport. Whilst every accident, especially where there are fatalities, is regrettable, they have to be viewed in the context of millions of flights operated and millions of passengers flown safely annually. For airlines safety is paramount, as is safety oversight by many global regulators.”
Damien Devlin, a lecturer in aviation management at the University of East London, says: “Recent incidents will inevitably attract attention and focus on the aviation sector. However, occurrences like this remain almost incalculably rare.
“According to IATA, there is, on average, just one accident for every 1.26 million flights. Though challenges persist during the take-off and landing phases, where half of the accidents occur. The industry must continue identifying how training, technology and flight decision-making can further enhance safety and its safety culture.
“Nevertheless, for perspective, a person would need to travel by air daily for 103,239 years to encounter a fatal accident.”

That asteroid hurtling toward Earth is starting to look scarier
That asteroid hurtling toward Earth is starting to look scarier
There’s a 3.1% chance an asteroid will hit Earth on Dec. 22, 2032. But there’s no reason to panic — at least not yet.
Here’s what you need to know.
What asteroid?
A space rock called 2024 YR4 is now the asteroid with the highest-ever chance of possibly hitting Earth. Scientists don’t know exactly how big it is, but they think it measures between 130 and 300 feet. They also aren’t sure exactly what it’s made of.
Where would it hit?
If 2024 YR4 does enter the atmosphere, the chances that it will hit the ocean are pretty high. That’s good news! However, some of the project paths currently overlap with a few major cities, including Mumbai, Lagos, and Bogotá.
What happens if it hits?
Lorien Wheeler, an engineer at the Asteroid Threat Assessment Project at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California, told The New York Times that if 2024 YR4 hits the open ocean, it “would be unlikely to cause a significant tsunami.”
But Mark Boslough, a physicist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, said it would be much worse if it hits solid ground. “The asteroid would create an enormous explosion,” he told The Times, and it would likely leave a massive crater. It also could create a “hot jet of asteroid vapor that would descend to the surface and incinerate everything” nearby.
Much of how impactful it is also depends on what the asteroid is made of.
“We don’t know how dense or porous it is, so its mass, and therefore the energy it would release if it strikes Earth’s surface or explodes in the atmosphere, is uncertain,” Boslough said.
Should I panic?
No. The chances of impact are about the same as a high school senior’s chances of getting into Harvard — that’s quite low. And it’s still a long way away. Astronomers once predicted an asteroid much ******* than 2024 YR4 had a 2.7% chance of hitting Earth. Then those odds went down to zero. A lot can change in seven years.
