  1. English golfer Parry leads the Kenya Open in Nairobi English golfer Parry leads the Kenya Open in Nairobi John Parry has made five birdies on the back nine to take a one-shot lead at the halfway stage of the Kenya Open in Nairobi. Englishman Parry had been sat alongside Benjamin Hebert at the top of the leaderboard heading into the second round, but was five behind by the time he teed off during an afternoon start at the Muthaiga Golf Club on Friday. He soon set about clawing back the deficit, though, finishing with six birdies in a round of 65 in testing windy conditions to take the outright lead at 14 under. Parry won the Mauritius Open in December to claim his second European tour win, and he’ll go top of the Race to Dubai rankings with another tournament win this week. “I controlled my ball flight pretty well and felt comfortable out there,” Parry said. “It is pretty simple, I just like to feel pretty centred through the turn and then just turn back down through it. It is one of those things I have been doing for the last year and then trying to shape the ball both ways. “I think that is probably what has helped me today with the wind direction, trying to hold the ball against the wind and things like that.” Frenchman Hebert had dropped his only shot of the day at the par-three fifth, but closed out with a run of three birdies for a five-under 66 to lie second. Scotland’s Connor Syme surged up the leaderboard to take a share of fifth place with a superb 64. The Australia challenge evaporated as Daniel Gale (73 for a three-over total), Brett Coletta (73 for four-over) and Danny List (72 for five-over) all failed to make the level-par cut. 2. Sean Combs Attorney Steps Down, Says There Are “No Circumstances” In Which He Can Represent Diddy Sean Combs Attorney Steps Down, Says There Are “No Circumstances” In Which He Can Represent Diddy Anthony Ricco, an attorney for Sean “Diddy” Combs, has filed a motion to step down from the mogul’s legal team. In a filing in the Southern District of New York, Ricco did not provide an affidavit or evidence for why he could not continue in the case other than a short statement saying he would no longer be able to “effectively serve.” More from The Hollywood Reporter “Although I have provided Sean Combs with the high level of legal representation expected by the court, under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel for Sean Combs, consistent with the ABA Standards for Criminal Justice,” the letter reads. Ricco notes that his withdrawal from representing Combs would not delay the trial date, which is currently scheduled to begin in May. And Combs would still continue to be represented by five other attorneys, including Marc Agnifilo and Teny Geragos. Combs was indicted in September and charged with sex trafficking and racketeering for directing a vast criminal enterprise through which it is alleged that he assaulted and trafficked women with the help of his various businesses from at least 2008. Combs has pleaded not guilty to the charges and is awaiting trial in a Brooklyn jail. On Tuesday, lawyers for Combs had filed a motion seeking to dismiss one of the sex trafficking charges he is facing. The charge, violating the Mann Act, prohibits transporting someone across state lines for the purpose of prostitution. In this case, the government alleges that Combs violated this by transporting male escorts across state lines to have sex with his girlfriends. However, lawyers argued it was a legal male ******* company and that the origins of the law are racist. The Mann Act was once called the White-Slave Traffic Act, and was enacted in 1910,. Combs’ lawyers argued the law’s historic purpose has been to “target ****** men and supposedly protect white women from them,” as it had been used in the prosecution of Jack Johnson and Chuck Berry. “This case is unprecedented in many ways, but perhaps most notably, and most disturbingly, no white person has ever been the target of a remotely similar prosecution. Sean Combs is an extraordinarily successful artist, businessman, philanthropist and one of the most accomplished ****** people in this country,” the filing reads. Marvel Rivals Not Introducing the Only 2 MCU Heroes That Can Mean a Full Guardians of the Galaxy Team Is Criminal Marvel Rivals Not Introducing the Only 2 MCU Heroes That Can Mean a Full Guardians of the Galaxy Team Is Criminal Marvel Rivals has been absolutely crushing it with character releases since its December launch. NetEase’s hero shooter keeps expanding its roster faster than Star-Lord can come up with questionable dance moves, and today’s Season 1.5 update proves they know exactly what they’re doing with the Fantastic Four. Star-Lord’s dance party is missing some key performers. | Image Credit: NetEase Games But while we’re celebrating the arrival of new heroes, there’s an elephant in the room that’s becoming harder to ignore than Drax standing perfectly still. The Guardians of the Galaxy roster in Marvel Rivals feels like watching an MCU movie with two of the main characters digitally removed—and it’s not just about missing familiar faces. What makes this particularly frustrating isn’t just about nostalgia or fan service. It’s about missing out on what could be one of the most perfectly balanced team compositions in the entire game. And no, we’re not talking Thanos-level balance here. The missing Guardians could complete Marvel Rivals‘ perfect team When it comes to team composition in Marvel Rivals, few lineups could be as perfectly balanced as a complete Guardians roster. Right now, we’ve got Star-Lord bringing the firepower, Groot holding the frontline, and both Mantis and Rocket keeping everyone alive with their healing abilities. The current Guardian Revival team-up between Star-Lord, Mantis, and Adam Warlock is already powerful enough, letting them self-revive in crucial moments. But imagine the possibilities if we had the full roster at our disposal: Comment byu/Hexxegone from discussion inmarvelrivals The potential for Gamora and Drax isn’t just about completing the roster—it’s about perfect team balance. With Drax as a second Vanguard alongside Groot, and Gamora joining Star-Lord in the Duelist role, we’d have a team composition that could actually dominate the meta. Comment byu/Hexxegone from discussion inmarvelrivals Comment byu/Hexxegone from discussion inmarvelrivals And let’s be honest, the voice lines alone would be worth it: Comment byu/Hexxegone from discussion inmarvelrivals While NetEase seems to be hinting at their eventual arrival through Star-Lord’s pre-match dialogue with ****** Panther, where he mentions searching for his missing family members, we’re left wondering just how long we’ll have to wait. The Fantastic Four shows us what could be! Fantastic Four complete, now about that six-player requirement. | Image Credit: NetEase Games Speaking of family reunions, today’s Season 1.5 update finally brings us a complete Fantastic Four roster with the addition of Human Torch and The Thing. NetEase has absolutely nailed their implementation, from Johnny’s devastating fire tornados to Ben’s unmovable Unyielding Will passive. The Thing’s arrival in particular shows us just how much thought goes into each hero’s kit. His ability to create zones that prevent mobility perfectly captures the essence of being that immovable object your team needs. Meanwhile, Human Torch’s Omega Fire team-up with Storm proves that NetEase knows exactly how to make these character interactions feel both powerful and true to the comics. While Marvel’s First Family now stands complete as a four-person squad, they still need two more heroes to fill out a full Marvel Rivals team. But at least they’re bringing a balanced composition to the table—one Tank, two Duelists, and one Strategist. That’s already leagues ahead of running a full OG Avengers lineup, which would have you charging in with three Tanks and three Duelists, practically gift-wrapping one “Ace!” after the other for the enemy team. 5. Elon Musk’s DOGE reportedly cuts staff at agency that regulates Elon Musk’s Tesla Elon Musk’s DOGE reportedly cuts staff at agency that regulates Elon Musk’s Tesla Elon Musk’s has been swinging through the federal government over the last few weeks, with his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) chopping down budgets and at a number of agencies. Among those affected is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is said to be losing about 10 percent of its relatively small headcount through buyouts and firings. According to , between 70 and 80 people are departing the agency, which is responsible for road safety in the US. Those ex-employees are said to have worked in a number of areas, such as safety grant funding and ****** test dummies. The DOGE cull also impacted three people from a very small team that was working on the safety of autonomous vehicles, such as those from Alphabet’s Waymo, Amazon’s Zoox and — hey, look at that! — Elon Musk’s Tesla. It’s probably just a coincidence that an organization headed by the same person who is CEO of a prominent company that’s working on self-driving cars has cut federal employees that are evaluating the safety of such technology. Probably. “If the question is, will this affect the federal government’s ability to understand the safety case behind Tesla’s vehicles, then yes, it will,” one of the fired engineers told The Post. “The amount of people in the federal government who are able to understand this adequately is very small. Now it’s almost nonexistent.” The NHTSA expanded from around 600 workers to 800 or so during the Biden administration. The autonomous vehicle oversight team was formed as part of that growth. Since several of its seven or so members were new to the federal government, their employment status was at risk due to a DOGE initiative to cull probationary employees from the federal workforce, as The Post notes. Other agencies that have been impacted include the Federal Aviation Administration, which last week cut around 400 probationary employees. Musk and President Donald Trump pledged in an interview this week that the former, who has been designated as a “special government employee,” wouldn’t be involved in decisions that would mark a conflict of interest with his businesses. The NHTSA has issued for Tesla vehicles over the years (including a recall of more than 2 million vehicles to ). 6. PM puts *********** steel in frame of renewables rollout PM puts *********** steel in frame of renewables rollout Targets for locally made steel to be used on infrastructure projects will be part of “finishing the build” on reforms for the next generation as part of a renewables boost, Anthony Albanese says. The prime minister unveiled a $500 million push to create jobs in clean energy manufacturing, driven by domestic steel and aluminium, during a major speech on Friday night. The funding will be set aside to support the construction of wind towers and surrounding infrastructure, as well as large-scale solar projects. The federal government would work with state and territory counterparts along with businesses and unions to help strengthen quotas of *********** steel to be used on projects to bolster the local industry, Mr Albanese said. “We want local content to become the national standard, and we’ll lead by example,” he said in the speech. “Every new wind tower needs hundreds of tonnes of steel, why should that steel come from anywhere but here.” The announcement comes after the federal government alongside South Australia provided a $2 billion rescue package for the Whyalla Steelworks. With a federal election looming, Mr Albanese used the speech to also make the case for a second term in government, arguing the job of reform was far from finished. “The next election is so important because it’s the difference between making three years of progress, or creating a generation of opportunity,” he said. “It’s the difference between cleaning up the mess of the last decade, or seizing the opportunities of the next decade. The difference between laying the foundations, and finishing the build.” Mr Albanese said domestic steel manufacturing would continue to play a key role as part of the reforms. “We will put *********** steel in every link of the supply chain, and we will help *********** workers benefit in every part of the country,” he said. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has also used a recent visit to South Australia to back steel production ahead of the election, but dismissed funds being used for green hydrogen projects. “(Green hydrogen’s) not commercially viable. One day it might be, and fantastic, but it’s not. This dream and the emotion needs to be replaced with reality because people’s livelihoods are on the line here,” he told reporters on Friday. “There is less prospect of Whyalla remaining as a sustainable business into the coming years, if Anthony Albanese owns part of the business.” Source link #puts #*********** #steel #frame #renewables #rollout Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  7. Castle v Castle is an upcoming, stylish card battler hitting mobile this year Castle v Castle is an upcoming, stylish card battler hitting mobile this year Castle V Castle is an upcoming card-battling puzzler It’s been funded by indie orgs such as Outersloth And it’s set to hit mobile sometime later this year! When it comes to card battlers simplicity is always better than complexity. Sure you sometimes have your Yu-Gi-Ohs and your Magic: The Gatherings where half the fun is in the Byzantine rulesets. But sometimes you just want to enjoy simple, straightforward and fast-paced rules that keep the game moving. Such is the case with the recently-announced Castle V Castle. Visually the best way to describe Castle V Castle is Ikea instruction-chic. With its dead-simple ******-and-white graphics, it still manages to communicate plenty of charm and humour in the brief glimpses we have from the trailer alone. Special mention to the walking sign which appears to declare “The End is Nigh” when you’re on the brink of defeat, only to reveal “Never Mind” on the other side if you make a comeback when it turns to leave. Gameplay-wise this is one of those rare examples where we get everything we need to know visually. Castle V Castle is a card battler where your objective is simply to destroy your opponent’s castle while keeping yours intact. To do that you’ll wield cards which grow your castle, demolish your opponent’s, or pull out all manner of weird and crazy combos to keep the match moving. Demolition man That includes cards which do everything from reversing an attack to blocking a card and vice-versa. I’ve no doubt that when Castle V Castle hits mobile it’ll be an instant favourite of many players, and I found myself being quite intrigued just looking at the trailer alone. With funding from indie group Outersloth and Slay the Spire alumni Casey Yano it’s clear there’s also a lot of enthusiasm in the developer space itself for Castle V Castle. So, be sure to check in because we’re sure to keep you posted on when this intriguing little release is set to hit mobile. 8. DOGE claims credit for $4 million ***** of school building auctioned under Biden administration DOGE claims credit for $4 million ***** of school building auctioned under Biden administration Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE, has continued to slash through federal agencies, firing workers and canceling contracts. But as it tallies its savings online, there are continuing indications that the group, which President Trump has referred to as Musk’s team of “super geniuses,” is overstating its achievements. The latest sign of this is the DOGE claim in a recent post on X that it succeeded in selling off a historic Washington, D.C., property that has been boarded up for years. The historic Webster School building was actually sold at auction in December for $4 million under the Biden administration. Records show that a company called Webster School LLC with members Katie Dang and Hung Tran were the purchasers. The ***** appears to have been finalized on Feb. 5, 2025. Undated photo of the Webster School, also known as the Daniel Webster School, an abandoned building located at 940 H Street NW in the Chinatown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. APK, via Wikimedia Commons Long owned by the federal government, Webster has more recently stood as a visible reminder of the impact of vacant or underutilized federal buildings in the District, a problem that local leaders and congressional lawmakers have scrutinized with escalating intensity after the pandemic upended in-person office work. D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, a Democrat who represents the District in Congress, made the ***** of the property a priority for years. “The Webster School has been vacant since the 1980s and fallen into disrepair,” Holmes Norton said when announcing a renewed push to sell the building in the summer of 2023. “During my service in Congress, I have worked to transfer unused or underused federal land in D.C. to D.C. or the private sector to redevelop neighborhoods and to generate tax revenue for D.C.” The property in downtown Washington was originally built in 1882 and has served over the years as a school — for White children during segregation, for assimilating immigrants after World War I, and for pregnant teens, according to the Washington Post. But it has stood vacant for decades. The federal government’s General Services Administration, or GSA, initiated the auction in September 2024, with bidding commencing in November. The process concluded on Dec. 16, 2024, when an undisclosed bidder secured the property for approximately $4.138 million. The DOGE attempt to take credit for the ***** — and add the savings to its tally of success — is part of an emerging pattern. As CBS News previously reported, DOGE has erroneously claimed credit for savings including an $8 billion contract that was actually worth $8 million, and $3.8 million of the contract had already been expended. The old Webster School building is situated close to the U.S. Secret Service headquarters and faced strict security restrictions that complicated efforts to sell or repurpose it. Recognizing the need to address these challenges, Congress passed a bill in 2024 aimed at easing restrictions on the ***** of the property. This paved the way for the GSA to put the Webster School up for auction in late 2024, ultimately leading to its ***** in December. This was part of a larger effort by the GSA to dispose of underutilized properties. 9. Owners Say Cybertrucks Are Shedding Body Panels; One Thinks He Knows Why Owners Say Cybertrucks Are Shedding Body Panels; One Thinks He Knows Why Owners Say Some Cybertrucks Are Shedding Pieces Reid Tomasko / YouTube Every example of the Tesla Cybertruck on the road comes with two boomerang-shaped pieces of metal attached along its roofline, completing a unique sharp point at the top of the car’s windshield. In at least two cases reported to the federal government, drivers have stated this part or a similar one has flown off the car at speed — and one Cybertruck owner even says he has video of it jettisoning a boomerang-shaped piece of metal into the the road at highway speeds. The clip, recorded by the on-board cameras of owner Reid Tomasko’s Cybertruck and shared with Road & Track, appears to show that trim piece flying off of the driver’s side of the truck. The trim piece then seems to fly into the lane behind the vehicle. Tomasko owns Shock Auto Styling, a New Hampshire-based car-wrapping business that he says has worked on dozens of Cybertrucks, and says he has seen many of the trucks up close and removed so many of the vehicle’s panels while wrapping them. He says he has encountered the problem on multiple trucks owned by other customers. In a video shared to YouTube two weeks ago, Tomasko detailed what he has seen happening with both his own Cybertruck and another truck suffering from similar problems. As the video illustrates, the trim piece that flew off of his truck is connected to a plastic frame bolted directly to the car; that trim piece, he says, is stuck to the frame with adhesive rather than welded or bolted to anything. That adhesive has seemingly failed in multiple places on his truck, leading to the loosened roofline trim panels. The trim piece may not be the only part of the truck that is effectively secured only with adhesive: Tomasko says he believes other components, including the truck’s quarter panels, also seem to be held on this way, and that those components maybe vulnerable to the same sort of failure. Tomasko’s video illustrates a similar adhesive problem on different parts of each of his truck’s two quarter panels. The customer-owned truck in his video also appears to show similar adhesive problems on both of its quarter panels, as well as the tailgate, but the latter is also welded on at points. Story continues Reid Tomasko / YouTube Tomasko estimates that he has wrapped “30 to 35” Cybertrucks. He tells R&T that he has seen signs of adhesive problems on “five to seven” trucks, including his own truck with a VIN around 15000 and the customer unit in the video. He estimates that relatively new trucks with “VINs from 30,000 up to 60,000” seem to be more frequently impacted, and notes that he has not seen the problem on earlier trucks, “probably VIN 3000 to 10,000.” Similar problems have been reported in two separate formal complaints to the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration. The first, from an owner in Brooklyn, states that his roofline trim piece “suddenly started falling off” at highway speeds. Another complaint from an owner in Illinois claims that an “upper passenger trim piece,” seemingly the same panel, fell off while the owner was driving their truck. The owner then claims that they asked a Tesla service center to replace the same component on the truck’s other side, but a brand representative told him that the location “will not do it unless [the panel] falls off.” Rakesh Kumar Vaid / Facebook Other examples of the problem have been reported on a Cybertruck owner Facebook group. Screenshots shared with R&T like the one above show four additional cases of trucks that have allegedly shed their roofline trim piece. At least one owner in the group claims that the piece flew off while they were driving. The cause of the issue is still unknown, but Tomasko speculates that cold weather may have something to do with the problem. He also notes that at least one other owner he knows has not experienced any problems. “Based on research and responses that I’ve had to the video, it seems that something, the glue is not flexing with the panels, so what happens is the stainless steel seems to flex when it gets cold when it gets cold and hot, but the glue that they use is kind of brittle, so my guess is the glue is separating,” Tomasko says. “Also, I have a friend with an earlier build than mine, and he lives in Vermont; I live in New Hampshire, he lives in Vermont, so we’re both in cold climates. His truck, his is fine, same amount of miles and everything, his is fine, but then mine is falling apart. So I don’t quite know, maybe it’s a glue batch that was incorrectly made — I don’t know.” Reid Tomasko / YouTube Tomasko tells R&T that he has pursued a buyback, noting that he “[feels] like a new vehicle shouldn’t really have to have all the panels replaced.” He adds that some other Cybertruck owners have accused him of being “just a hater,” even though he bought the vehicle, and “definitely [misses]” his truck, which he says is currently at a Tesla Service Center. “No, I’m not a hater. I have the truck, I love the truck. I bought one! I love the truck. I wrap, mostly, exclusively Teslas in the Northeast at my wrap shop. So I love Teslas,” he says. “I’m just trying to share what’s going on to better help the engineers to fix this super fast.” Tomasko says the problems he has faced are frustrating, in part, because they play into negative perceptions of the Cybertruck from others. “It does *****, because everybody kind of makes fun of the Cybertruck. To the outside person, it’s kind of weird, it’s ugly, whatever. Once you actually get in it, drive it, you realize it’s pretty frickin’ cool,” he says. “It’s kind of been sad, because I’ve been trying to prove to people that it’s a really awesome truck that’s not falling apart, and then mine starts to fall apart, so it’s just… Yeah, it’s kind of unfortunate and sad.” Road & Track has reached out to Tesla for comment, but has not received a response as of this story’s Friday morning publication. We’ll update this story with any reply from the carmaker, should we receive one. Skipper Pat Cummins and fellow seamer Josh Hazlewood are out of the tournament with injuries while left-armer Mitchell Starc pulled out of the squad for personal reasons. It will be the first time none of the the famous pace trio have featured at a major white-ball tournament for 14 years. “It’s a little bit different,” Smith said. “I’ve played for 10-plus years with those guys. “We’re missing a few of our gun fast bowlers but we’re not worried about that, we’re thinking about what we’ve got here and the opportunity those guys have.” Cummins, Hazlewood and Starc have 525 one-day international wickets between them. They were all part of Australia’s 2015 and 2023 World Cup wins and have featured in the past five Ashes series. In their place the attack will likely be led by 30-year-old seamer Nathan Ellis, the only other pace bowler selected in the squad before the withdrawals. 16. Coinbase boss claims SEC will drop crypto lawsuit Coinbase boss claims SEC will drop crypto lawsuit Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has claimed that the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) plans to drop a lawsuit against the firm. The US regulator alleged in 2023 that Coinbase had violated laws by offering investments that are subject to its rules, without properly registering. Its boss Brian Armstrong said in a post on X on Friday that “an agreement” had been reached with the regulator’s staff to dismiss the legal action which would see it pay no fines or make any changes to how it operates, when confirmed. A spokesperson for the SEC declined to comment. Its lawsuit accused the firm of operating illegally in the US, by taking on the services of being an exchange, broker and clearing agency without registering for those functions, as required by law. It said the exchange was also offering crypto assets it deemed to be “unregistered securities”. “Since at least 2019, Coinbase has made billions of dollars unlawfully facilitating the buying and selling of crypto asset securities,” it said in June 2023. The regulator said this meant people buying or selling those financial products were deprived of “significant protections”. It formed part of a wider crackdown on cryptocurrency firms which President Donald Trump pledged to reverse if elected during his 2024 campaign. Writing on X, Mr Armstrong said the potential dismissal of the SEC’s lawsuit – which has not been confirmed by the regulator – was “hugely vindicating”. His lengthy post thanked President Trump for winning the election and praised the role of the “crypto voter” in helping secure his victory. “I want to give a shout out to all the crypto holders in the US who elected pro-crypto candidates, on both sides of the aisle, to make sure your rights were preserved,” he wrote. “It turns out the crypto voter is real, and showed up in the millions.” His post also hit out at former SEC chair Gary Gensler, who led its tougher enforcement actions against crypto exchanges until he stepped down in January. Mr Gensler had earlier filed a similar case against Binance, the world’s largest exchange allowing traders to buy and sell digital assets, which was recently granted a 60-day pause by the SEC amid shifting US regulations. Trump also sought to appeal to crypto companies and investors during his campaign by saying he would fire Mr Gensler on “day one” of his presidency. Coinbase’s chief legal officer Paul Grewal also wrote on X that “there will be no settlement or compromise– a wrong will simply be made right”. “We won’t stop fighting until we have the clear rules needed to enable the industry to truly thrive in the United States,” he said, echoing Mr Armstrong’s call for legislation to help boost the cryptocurrency sector. “We look forward to working with Congress and SEC staff on this next phase of progress,” he added. 18. Auditor: 2026 till Birmingham recovers from botched Oracle project Auditor: 2026 till Birmingham recovers from botched Oracle project Grant Thornton has issued a forensic 66-page report relating to a failed Oracle Fusion enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation at Birmingham City Council, which has left it without a functioning finance system until at least 2026. When the council’s Oracle implementation steering committee took the decision to go live in April 2022, say the auditors from Grant Thornton, “the level of risk inherent in the Oracle solution was not properly understood. This resulted in the implementation failing at a significant cost to the council, contributing to a breakdown of financial control such that it has been unable to adequately control its finances throughout 2022/23, 2023/24 and into 2024/25. “The governance and programme management for the Oracle programme had fundamental weaknesses that were never effectively remedied and were further exposed by high turnover of staff in both senior and operational roles,” they said. Birmingham City Council implemented an SAP ERP system, ECC6, in 1999, for finance, procurement, HR and payroll purposes. Over the years, it was customised to fit the organisation’s business processes. In 2006, Capita was engaged to provide council services, including the hosting of the SAP instance. And then came SAP’s ERP system based on its reportedly high-speed, columnar, in-memory database, Hana, S/4 Hana, in 2015. SAP also announced end of support for the older ERP by 2025, later extended to 2027. Like many other SAP customers, Birmingham had a choice to make. It opted to switch to cloud-based Oracle Fusion, following advice from Socitm Advisory, and announced its decision in July 2019. It also announced programme support contracts for Insight *** Ltd, in partnership with Evosys for systems integration; Socitm Advisory, for programme and change management; and Egress, for data migration services. Ameo Professional Services was appointed to provide programme management and assurance to the council form January 2021. The effectiveness of Ameo and the other suppliers is the subject of another report commissioned by the council, Grant Thornton says. Its findings are legally privileged, according to the auditor, and they are not included in the 11 February 2025 report. As previously reported in Computer Weekly, the financial business case for the upgrade showed that the SAP system, run by Capita, was costing the council £5.1m per year. Over the nine years between 2022/2023 and 2031/2032, this would amount to £46m. For the same *******, the Oracle system was meant to save £563k in 2022/23 and £788k in 2023/2024, with the savings accumulating over the nine years to £10.9m. In August 2019, the council ended its contract with Capita and the majority of IT services were transitioned to an in-house team, including 300-plus Capita staff, for the most part not Oracle specialists. Building in-house Oracle capability proved to be “very challenging”, according to the report. As previously reported in Computer Weekly, after the go-live in 2022, the Oracle system required manual remediation to fix accounting issues. The council’s 2024 financial report showed a budget of £5.3m for continued support and manual intervention on the Oracle system. The report’s authors note that the failure of the implementation of Oracle Fusion has been a “contributory factor to the council’s financial position rather than being a fundamental factor”. It also notes that the implementation programme failed to adhere to its design principles to adopt Oracle-standard functionality, instead choosing to adapt it to align with the council’s existing processes. Business culture change ignored Grant Thornton also found that the council did not focus sufficiently on the business and culture change required to prepare the organisation for the Oracle system. End users were “unprepared and unequipped to use the system”, it claims. It also notes that “the culture of the council appears to be one where either bad news was not welcome or officers felt uncomfortable to communicate bad news. We have reported previously on the high level of turnover of senior officers at the council. If the council is to succeed with other major projects, including the current ERP project, and avoid similar issues to the failed ERP implementation, then it will need to carefully consider how it can change its culture to one of openness, mutual support and transparency.” Among the impacts of the failed Oracle implementation, the auditors note its overall cost, plus the investment necessary to put it right, will be at least $90m in excess of its original budget. The reimplementation of the system is not expected to be complete until 2026. The council will hold a meeting on 11 March 2025 to consider the Grant Thornton report, which draws lessons from the botched implementation. These include “learning points” with respect to governance and oversight, programme management, solution design, business change and culture. 21. Andreeva teen dreams continue as she makes Dubai final Andreeva teen dreams continue as she makes Dubai final Russian teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva has continued her giant-slaying exploits at the Dubai Tennis Championships by upsetting Kazakhstani sixth seed Elena Rybakina 6-4 4-6 6-3 in the semi-finals. The 17-year-old French Open semi-finalist, who had stunned five-times grand slam champion Iga Swiatek in the quarters and former Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova in the round of 32, is the youngest player to reach a WTA 1000 Final. Andreeva also becomes the youngest player to beat three grand slam winners at a single event since compatriot Maria Sharapova in 2004. Wimbledon 2022 champion Rybakina, ranked seventh in the world, let a slender 2-1 lead slip in a tight opening set as momentum swung back and forth before Andreeva came out on top in Friday’s clash. But Rybakina forced a decider following a close second set where she had built a 4-3 lead and just as she looked to run away with the win after racing to a 3-1 lead in the final set, Andreeva roared back to win five successive games. With the victory, world No.14 Andreeva also avenged her 2023 Beijing round-of-16 defeat against Rybakina. “Last time we played it was a really tough match. She went for her shots and killed me in the end. This time I knew she’d hit hard. I tried to fight for every point and kept believing,” Andreeva said. Up next for Andreeva in the final is either Clara Tauson, of Denmark, or Czech 14th seed Karolina Muchova. 23. Tesla ‘should take a look’ at Nissan opportunity, analyst says Tesla ‘should take a look’ at Nissan opportunity, analyst says Japan is reportedly pursuing an investment from Tesla (TSLA) in Nissan (7201.T, NSANY), according to reporting from the Financial Times, after merger talks fell through between Nissan and Honda (HMC, 7267.T). CFRA analyst Garrett Nelson shares his read of the report and the electric vehicle (EV) space at large with Seana Smith and Brad Smith on Morning Brief. “No question, it’s a difficult environment, especially if you’re a small EV startup that maybe went public three or four years ago,” Nelson says, nodding to Nikola’s (NKLA) recent bankruptcy filing. “I think Nissan would like to do a deal with Tesla. We know that there are discussions with Honda, [that] reportedly fell through recently,” the analyst says, adding, that Nissan is “in a very difficult spot” as “they’re like a lot of traditional automakers and that they’ve been losing market share for a long time now, both to ******** upstart automakers as well as companies like Tesla who have grown their volume dramatically over the last few years.” He notes that “Tesla hasn’t indicated any interest in Nissan, but we do think they should take a look at this opportunity. It could make sense for them.” To watch more expert insights and analysis on the latest market action, check out more Morning Brief here. This post was written by Naomi Buchanan. 24. Marvel Rivals Bans A Popular Third-Party Plugin, But Don’t Worry If You’ve Used It Marvel Rivals Bans A Popular Third-Party Plugin, But Don’t Worry If You’ve Used It NetEase is getting more aggressive when it comes to cracking down on the use of third-party plugins while playing Marvel Rivals. It’s now banning the use of an application called Blitz, although NetEase is being lenient in that it won’t ban players who previously used the software. A notice against using third-party plugins was put out on Marvel Rivals’ website today, February 21. It specifically calls out Blitz, a third-party application that can be used while playing games like League of Legends or Fortnite to gain insight into informative data about competitive games that players can’t typically see. In Marvel Rivals’ case, NetEase says players using Blitz could see damage and healing statistics, predict the use of Ultimate abilities, and use it to help decide which heroes to ban in competitive play. While it’s not as aggressive as cheating software that helps players see through walls or always have precise aim, NetEase explained that “we deem this program as cheating software and will no longer allow its use during gameplay.” Thankfully for the Marvel Rivals players who use Blitz, this ban is not retroactive. “Players who have previously used this software will not face any penalties, as long as you refrain from using it in future games,” NetEase explained. “To uphold justice in our gaming universe and protect the integrity of your account, we strongly urge you to refrain from using any third-party plugins. Together, we can forge a vibrant and heroic gaming environment.” Marvel Rivals is available for free on PC, PS4, and Xbox Series X|S. The hero shooter recently surpassed 40 million players and added The Thing and Human Torch as new playable heroes today. Unfortunately, NetEase also laid off the game’s North American developers earlier this week despite its success.
