Justice Department shuts down federal law enforcement misconduct tracker
The Department of Justice has eliminated its national database that tracked misconduct incidents among federal law enforcement officers.
“Agencies can no longer query or add data” to the National Law Enforcement Accountability Database, the Justice Department posted in an online statement, confirming that it is being decommissioned as a result of an order signed by President Trump on his first day in office that rescinded 78 Biden-era executive actions.
The website where the database existed is now a dead link.
The Justice Department did not immediately respond to CBS News’ request for comment.
The police misconduct database was operational for a little over a year, having launched in December 2023. It was not public. Instead, law enforcement agencies could privately search for information on whether a new hire or officer within their ranks had a documented history of abuse, or of violating department policies or law, for example racial bias or excessive use of force.
It was conceived in an attempt to reduce the problem of so-called “wandering officers” — instances where police who were forced out of their jobs because of substantiated misconduct simply found new jobs at different agencies that would otherwise have no way of knowing their history and the potential risk of arming them with a badge and gun.
The idea of a federal police misconduct database was proposed by the first Trump administration in an executive order called Safe Policing for Safe Communities (EO 12939) on June 16, 2020.
However, efforts to establish one did not begin until executive order 14074, signed on May 25, 2022, by then-President Joe Biden marking two years since George Floyd’s killing by a Minneapolis police officer. The Biden order was among those rescinded by Mr. Trump on Jan. 20.
“It’s a reckless and harmful decision and a major step backward for transparency and public safety,” said Chiraag Bains, non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, who led the development of Biden’s executive order establishing the database in his role as deputy director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, where he served until 2023. “Why would you shut this down? This helps no one except bad actors who had no business wearing the badge.”
All 90 executive agencies with law enforcement officers were required to report misconduct incidents related to their nearly 150,000 federal police nationwide. During its brief time in operation, an additional four departments also voluntarily submitted officer records.
The president only has the authority to require federal agencies to participate; however, the NLEAD was designed with the potential to incorporate state, local and tribal police departments as well, offering them a series of grants as incentives to opt in.
According to Bains, the Biden administration built the database in direct consultation with policing agencies, civil rights groups, and academics, and specifically included due process protections for individual officers, giving them the ability to challenge the inclusion of any potential mistaken information.
“This really makes cops’ jobs harder,” Bains said of the shutdown. The International Association of Chiefs of Police appeared to agree.
“Our members saw real value in the NLEAD database which is why we worked with both the Trump and Biden Administrations on conceptualizing and bringing the database to life,” IACP President Ken Walker told CBS News in a statement. “When hiring a law enforcement officer, leaders want to have as much information and context about candidates as possible while ensuring that each candidate’s due process rights are respected.”
In 2020, a team of researchers from Duke University and Chicago Law School studied data on all 98,000 law enforcement officers at nearly 500 police agencies in the state of Florida and found that officers with a history of substantiated misconduct were “more likely than both officers hired as rookies and those hired as veterans who have never been fired to be fired from their next job or to receive a complaint for a ‘moral character violation.'”
In its first annual report published last December, the Bureau of Justice Statistics through the NLEAD database identified 4,790 misconduct incidents between 2018 and 2023. Among those, nearly 1,500 federal officers were either suspended, fired or resigned “while under investigation for serious misconduct,” and more than 300 officers were convicted of crimes.

Woman accused of drugging and robbing older men in a deadly romance scheme
Woman accused of drugging and robbing older men in a deadly romance scheme
LAS VEGAS (AP) — A woman used online dating apps to lure at least four older men to meet her in person, then drugged them with sedatives and stole hundreds of thousands of dollars in a “sinister” romance scheme, FBI officials in Las Vegas said Friday.
Three of the men died, authorities said, and she has been charged in one of their deaths.
Aurora Phelps, 43, who is in custody in Mexico, faces 21 counts including wire fraud, identity theft and one count of kidnapping resulting in death, Sue Fahami, the acting United States attorney for the District of Nevada, said at a news conference.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
“This is a romance scam on steroids,” said Spencer Evans, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Las Vegas division. One of the four victims, who were targeted in 2021 and 2022, awoke from a coma after Phelps gave him prescription sedatives over the course of a week, Evans added.
In one instance Phelps is alleged to have kidnapped a victim by heavily sedating him and taking him across the U.S.-Mexico border in a wheelchair and then to a Mexico City hotel room, where he was later found dead.
After incapacitating her victims, Evans said, Phelps stole their cars, withdrew money from their bank accounts, used their credit cards to purchase luxury items and gold and even tried to access social security and retirement accounts.
According to the indictment, Phelps met one man in July 2021, went on lunch dates with him and that November ordered lunch to his house and slipped him a prescription drug.
While he was “mostly unconscious” for about five days, Phelps gained access to his accounts and stole his iPhone, iPads, driver’s license and bank cards, according to the indictment. She also allegedly accessed his E-Trade account and sold Apple stock worth about $3.3 million, though she was unable to withdraw that money.
Authorities believe Phelps used popular dating apps including Tinder, Hinge and Bumble to find her targets. The men were lonely and looking for companionship and went on multiple dates with Phelps before she stealthily gave them sedatives, according to Evans.
“It’s folks that are out looking for love that ran into something far more sinister,” he said.
Phelps, a dual citizen of Mexico and the U.S., had been on the FBI’s radar for a couple of years, according to Evans. He declined to comment on her criminal history.
The Associated Press left messages seeking comment with Mexico’s Foreign Affairs Ministry and Attorney General’s Office.
Several of the victims’ relatives called authorities when they were unable to contact their loved ones, Evans said.
One woman was unable to reach her father the day after he went on a date with Phelps in Guadalajara, Mexico, in May 2022, according to court records. The next day ******** police found him dead on the bathroom floor of his home. Phelps then used an account belonging to the victim to purchase a gold coin, along with other transactions, the indictment alleges.
The FBI is aware of more alleged victims in the U.S. and Mexico, Evans said, and is making information about the case public, including suspected aliases, in hopes of identifying others who “fell victim to her scams and whose trust in her may have cost them their life.”
The FBI is also working with the Department of Justice and ******** authorities to secure her extradition.
If convicted on every charge, which include seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of mail fraud, six counts of bank fraud, three counts of identity theft and one count of kidnapping, Phelps faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, Fahami said.

Sharks won’t be blinded by bright Las Vegas lights
Sharks won’t be blinded by bright Las Vegas lights
Cronulla captain Cameron McInnes “couldn’t care less” about the temptations on offer in the USA’s most notorious party city, and doesn’t expect it to distract his Sharks teammates either.
The Sharks will arrive in Las Vegas later than the other three NRL teams participating in the opening weekend of fixtures to be played at Allegiant Stadium next Sunday (AEDT).
While Penrith, Canberra and the Warriors have all touched down already in Vegas to begin acclimatising, the Sharks won’t arrive until Monday following a weekend of training at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
It’s a similar itinerary to that followed by the Sydney Roosters last year, with Trent Robinson’s side basing themselves at UCLA in the lead-up to their win over Brisbane.
Fears of a full week in Sin City affecting player performances were unfounded last year.
Manly were the only side to spend their whole trip there in 2024 and upset South Sydney to kick off a campaign that ended in a return to finals.
Gun recruit Addin Fonua-Blake is among the Sharks players never to have visited the US, much less the bright lights of Vegas.
But McInnes shrugged at suggestions the Sharks could be overawed by Vegas’s lurid casinos and bars on their later arrival.
“I couldn’t care less about all that,” the lock told AAP.
“I really think the boys are excited to put on a good show with the game. Obviously there’s going to be some good experiences but sitting in a casino and things like that isn’t one of them.
“I don’t think the boys are too interested in that anyway.”
In their off-time in LA, McInnes said the Sharks will be focusing on “wholesome experiences” – they will attend an ice-hockey game as a group, spend time at Venice Beach and pay a visit to a local fire station after the devastating Palisades fires.
The skipper sees no need to remind his teammates there won’t be time for blackjack or mojitos in Vegas ahead of their clash with four-time reigning premiers Penrith.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity but at the same time we don’t go and do this if we’re not playing footy,” he said.
“So if you want to mess with the footy, it’s not going to be enjoyable.”
Factoring in only players who have already made their first-grade debuts, the Sharks have the fifth-oldest squad in the NRL this year, with plenty of experience travelling for work.
“We’re all professionals and if you want to be a professional footy player in the Cronulla Sharks then you need to go over there and be in it for business,” halfback Nicho Hynes told AAP.
“That’s anywhere, Magic Round you see all different things happen, in finals games in different cities. You’ve just got to go over there and treat it like another game of footy.”

A comparison of the .308 Win beside the .30-06 Springfield.
Hunters and shooters have been comparing the .308 vs .30/06 for decades. Some stand by the old warhorse .30/06 Springfield and others claim it’s descendant, the .308 Winchester, is better. Both are .30-caliber battle rifle cartridges that won the hearts of sportsmen worldwide. Though they have lots of similarities, it’s their key differences that give them their distinct advantages and disadvantages. If you’re making the .308 vs .30/06 comparison yourself, your conclusions will depend on one of those few factors where they don’t overlap.
Both the .30-06 (left) and the .308 Win. have their advantages. Tyler Freel
History of the Two Cartridges
The .30/06 name is a derivative of the cartridge’s .30-caliber projectile and the year it was introduced, 1906. Its parent case is the .30/03 Springfield. At the time of its inception, the .30/06 cartridge was the pinnacle of modern ballistics, launching a 150-grain projectile 2,700 fps. The .30/06 gained its notoriety on the battlefield, playing large roles in WWI, WWII, and the Korean War. Since its adoption, the 30-06 has become one of the most common and capable big-game hunting cartridges in America and around the world.
Modern Advancements Boost Performance
Better performing ammunition has also improved the capabilities of the .30-06 with 150-grain bullets now regularly pushing nearly 3,000 fps. It can also leverage modern high-B.C. 225-grain bullets like the Hornady ELD-M. One of the many endearing qualities of the .30-06 is its ability to shoot a wide range of projectiles ranging from Hornady’s 125-grain SST bullets clear on up to Remington’s 220-grain Core-Lokt in factory ammo.
The .308 (right) fits in more compact magazines with better capacity than the .30/06 pictured in 8-round M1 Garand clips. Tyler Freel
In 1952, half a century after the .30/06 was introduced, the .308 Winchester was born. Its parent case is the .30/06. The military version of the cartridge, the 7.62x51mm NATO, offered soldiers a rifle that nearly matched the ballistic performance of the 150-grain M2 Ball .30/06 ammo, but in a lighter, shorter package. The military saw the benefits of the new cartridge and converted some of, but eventually replaced, the M1 Garand service rifles, chambered in .30/06, with the M14 chambered in 7.62×51, aka .308 Win.

Along with its rise in the military, the .308 Win. also became popular among hunters favoring short-action rifles and lighter recoil.
.308 vs .30/06 Ballistics
Ballistically, the .30/06 shoots the same bullets a bit faster than the .308, resulting in better trajectories and more kinetic energy — but don’t put too much weight in that. The biggest edge the .30/06 has is being able to shoot bullets heavier than 180 grains effectively. Comparing ballistics of the two cartridges side by side, however, reveals the minimal gains made shooting the .30/06. Let’s look at two examples.
Hornady Outfitter CX 150-Grain
Hornady’s 165-grain Outfitter .308 load is a solid option for those wanting a monolithic hunting bullet. Tyler Freel
Hornady’s new Outfitter line includes a 150-grain CX bullet, which is a mono-metal (copper alloy) projectile. Here’s what the ballistics look like from the two cartridges, given a 200-yard zero.
.30/06 Springfield
Muzzle velocity: 3080 fps
Drop: 6.4 inches at 300 yards
Energy: 1955 foot-pounds at 300 yards
.308 Winchester
Muzzle velocity: 2900 fps
Drop: 7.4 inches at 300 yards
Energy: 1712 foot-pounds at 300 yards
Federal 165-Grain Fusion
Federal’s 165-grain Fusion in .30-06 (pictured). When you compare the .308 Win. and the .30/06 cartridges side by side, the .30-06 has a slight advantage. Natalie Krebs
Another example that features even less difference in performance between the two cartridges is Federal’s 165-grain projectile loaded in their Fusion Line. This is again with a 200-yard zero.
.30/06 Springfield
Muzzle velocity: 2,790 fps
Drop: 7.9 inches at 300 yards
Energy: 1800 foot-pounds at 300 yards
.308 Winchester
Muzzle velocity: 2,700 fps
Drop: 8.6 inches at 300 yards
Energy: 1660 foot-pounds at 300 yards
Inside 300-yards, the ballistics and terminal performance of these two cartridges would be nearly impossible to distinguish between. Yes, the .30/06 does provide a slight advantage in performance but that additional performance does come at a price in terms of felt recoil, more on this in a moment.
Heavier Bullets
It’s worth noting that the .30-06 starts to pull away from the .308 as you move up to heavier bullets. For example, here’s how the two cartridges perform with a 180-grain Nosler Partition.
Ballistics of the .308 (left) and and .30-06 right when firing a 180-grain Nosler partition with a 200-yard zero and 10 mph crosswind.
.30/06 Springfield
Muzzle velocity: 2,700 fps
Drop: 8.5 inches at 300 yards
Energy: 1865 foot-pounds at 300 yards
.308 Winchester
Drop: 9.4 inches at 300 yards
Energy: 1672 foot-pounds at 300 yards
The takeaway? The cartridges are very similar at typical hunting distances with moderate-weight bullets. But if you’re interested in shooting heavier bullets (180 grains and up) at farther ranges, the .30/06 does provide an advantage in retained energy.
This large Kodiak brown bear was taken with a .30/06 using hand-loaded 212-grain ELD-X bullets. Tracy Freel
Recoil
Recoil is a big deal to some and not so much to others (even though it should be). When I was younger, I paid very little attention to felt recoil, chalking it up to a necessary evil of shooting. However, the older I get, the more I shy away from heavy-recoiling firearms. Neither the .308 Win. or 30/06 are known for being light recoiling cartridges, but they are not exactly punishing to shoot in standard-weight hunting rifles. Like their ballistics, comparing recoil between .308 vs .30/06 is more about the rifle weight. Given the larger case capacity and increased powder consumption, the .30/06 will typically produce more recoil than the .308 Win. For some very basic recoil figures, a 7-pound .308 generates about 21 foot-pounds of recoil compared to a 7-pound .30/06 generating about 25 foot-pounds of recoil. But these numbers don’t tell the full story, because the difference in felt recoil is more nuanced.
Rifle Weight Matters
The overall weight of the rifle, stock dimensions, use of a suppressor or muzzle brake, and load combination all contribute to the amount of felt recoil a rifle produces. Due to its short-action design, rifles chambered in .4308 Win. are typically a few ounces less than the same rifle chambered in 30-06. For example a Browning X-Bolt Medallion in .308 weighs 6 lbs. 8 oz. The .30-06 version of the rifle weighs 4 ounces more.
A heavy target rifle with a suppressor in .30/06 doesn’t recoil much, but a lightweight mountain rifle will. Tyler Freel
More importantly, there are a variety of light mountain rifles available in .308, and fewer of these guns are chambered in .30/06. So if you’re looking for a light hunting rifle in .30-caliber (and don’t want the punishment of a big-booming .300 Win. Mag.) then the .308 is a good choice. Light rifles are great for backpacking but do generate more recoil.
There are certainly ways to reduce felt recoil. While I loathe muzzle brakes, they do serve their purpose and reduce the amount of felt recoil for both cartridges. Even better, suppressors provide the same benefit of recoil reduction while saving our ears from the abuse of a muzzle blast.

.308 vs .30/06 Accuracy
Both the .308 Win. and .30/06 are capable of producing accurate results for hunting purposes. In competition, .308 vs .30/06 isn’t much of a comparison. The .308 quickly replaced the ’06 in high-power and service rifle rankings after it’s introdution.
From a purely anecdotal point of view, I have had better success getting rifles chambered in .308 Win. to shoot sub-MOA than I have those chambered in .30/06. But remember, that’s an anecdote, not hard data. I think the reason that the .308 consistently out shoots the .30/06 in terms of accuracy is because of its more efficient cartridge design.
Given the modern advancements in rifle and ammunition manufacturing, there are plenty of factory rifles chambered in both cartridges that will shoot factory ammunition sub-MOA in three-shot groups and near MOA in five-shot groups. In Tyler Freel’s test of the best mid-priced rifles, he found that the best rifles shot about 1.3-inch, five-shot groups (this was done after averaging the 10 best groups from each rifle).
Read Next: The Best 308 Hunting Rifles
The vast majority of rifle companies all chamber and sell rifles in both .308 Win. and .30-06 due to their widespread popularity. The same can also be said for ammunition companies with .30/06 and 308. Win. ammo being among their top selling SKUs every year.
Terminal Performance
OL Staff Writer Tyler Freel with a nice moose taken with a .30/06 and 150-grain bullets. Tracy Freel
We already established that the .30/06 shoots a tad faster and subsequently packs more punch than the .308 Win. However, dead is dead and the buck or bull you settle your crosshairs on this fall will not know whether they were shot with a .308 vs .30/06. Instead of cartridge choice, hunters should focus on bullet construction when trying to maximize terminal performance. Thanks to the booming popularity of both of these cartridges, hunters have a smorgasbord of killer bullet options to choose from.
For maximum penetration on ******* game, shoot solid mono-metal bullets. Some of my favorite mono-metal projectiles include Hornady’s CX, Nosler’s E-Tip, and Winchester’s Copper Impact.
For an all-around capable big-game option, you can’t go wrong shooting a bonded bullet such as the Nosler Accubond from either the .30/06 or .308 Win. Thin-skinned deer and pronghorn can be hunted with ease with both cartridges with just about any hunting bullet, though many prefer a rapid-expanding projectile to maximize internal trauma.
Ammunition Availability and Selection
The .308 Win. (left) vs. the .30-06. Tyler Freel
One of the biggest advantages to shooting both the .30/06 and .308 Win. is that ammo is almost always readily available. Even during the recent ammo shortage, .30/06 and .308 Win ammo could still be found. Cost varies based on ammunition brand and bullet type, but generally the .308 Win and .30/06 ammunition share similar price tags. For example, a box of 20 .308 Win. 150-gr. Remington Core-Lokt is listed on Midway USA for $28.99. That same box of ammo for the .30/06 is listed for the exact same price of $28.99. Average price for a box of 20-rounds for both cartridges will hover between $35 and $40.

FAQIs .308 more powerful than .30/06?
No, the .30/06 is more powerful and can shoot heavier bullets
Why did the military switch from .30/06 to .308?
The military adopted the .308 because it produced similar ballistics to the .30/06 but was shorter and lighter, allowing soldiers to carry more ammo.
Is .30/06 overkill for deer?
No, it’s not overkill. The .30/06 is an excellent deer cartridge, but smaller cartridges do work well too.
Final Thoughts on .308 vs .30/06.
This big bull moose fell to a single 175-grain bullet from a .308 Winchester. Tyler Freel
The truth is that you can’t go wrong with either of these cartridges when selecting your next big-game hunting rifle. Both carry ample killing power and provide hunters with a wide range of ammunition options. Given a similar rifle configuration, the .308 Win. will exhibit slightly less recoil and is inherently more efficient than the .30/06. But the .30/06 will edge it out slightly in velocity. That difference is somewhat negligible, but if you want to shoot bullets heavier than 180 grains, go with the .30/06. For any game in North America at modest distances, either is a good choice

England have ‘lots to work on’ but Sarina Wiegman ‘not concerned’
England have ‘lots to work on’ but Sarina Wiegman ‘not concerned’
Portugal came into the game unbeaten in their last 10 matches – having not tasted defeat since a narrow 1-0 loss by France in December 2023.
They sit 18 places lower than England in the Fifa world rankings but they are not to be underestimated.
England were missing key players including Georgia Stanway, Alex Greenwood, Beth Mead and Lauren Hemp through injury but that didn’t seem to phase them when things initially got going in Portugal.
Manchester United midfielder Grace Clinton slotted into Stanway’s role and was effective, full-back Lucy Bronze was dangerous on the right-hand side and Russo continued her fine goalscoring form to put England ahead.
Wiegman’s side looked in complete control, dominating proceedings and moving the ball around nicely.
But they failed to capitalise and did not extend their lead – something which ultimately proved costly.
“I think when it’s just 1-0 you keep a team in it and the longer it stays 1-0 the more the opposition gets confidence,” Bright told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“We definitely need to be more ruthless in front of goal and take our chances. We need to create a few more as well.”
That was a message repeated by Wiegman, who called for more ruthlessness and admitted she was frustrated they did not add to their tally.
As a result, Portugal responded, using their pace to get in behind England’s backline and a tiring midfield.
“In the second half I was scratching my head thinking it’s a different team,” said former England midfielder Karen Carney on ITV.
“The basics went and that’s when you get punished. There are lessons to be learnt.”

The firings are the first of what is expected to be a vast wave of layoffs at the Defense Department.
The firings are the first of what is expected to be a vast wave of layoffs at the Defense Department.
The Pentagon said on Friday that it would fire 5,400 civilian probationary workers starting next week, in the first of what officials say will likely be a wave of much larger layoffs at the Defense Department, the government’s biggest agency.
“We anticipate reducing the department’s civilian work force by 5 to 8 percent to produce efficiencies and refocus the department on the president’s priorities and restoring readiness in the force,” Darin Selnick, a senior Defense Department personnel official, said in a statement.
The department has more than 945,000 civilian employees. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has said 17 specific missions, such as military operations at the southwestern border, would be exempt from the 8 percent cuts in the defense budget he has ordered for each of the next five years.
Senior Pentagon supervisors were told this week to expect the department to fire about 55,000 civilian workers worldwide, part of a push by President Trump and Elon Musk to drastically reduce the size of the federal work force.
The coming dismissals announced on Friday appear to be the first tranche, and target the easiest employees to fire. Workers on probation do not receive the same protections that many other federal employees have. Probationary periods tend to last a year but can be longer for certain positions.
Mr. Selnick’s statement said that the department would institute a hiring freeze while officials conducted “further analysis of our personnel needs.”
“It is simply not in the public interest to retain individuals whose contributions are not mission-critical,” he said.
Some Defense Department supervisors have criticized the looming personnel cuts as a hasty, ill-conceived move that could damage the department’s future.

AP sues Trump aides over Gulf of Mexico naming spat
AP sues Trump aides over Gulf of Mexico naming spat
The Associated Press has sued senior aides to US President Donald Trump over a decision by the White House to restrict the news outlet’s access to the president and other officials for continuing to refer to the Gulf of Mexico in its coverage.
The lawsuit, filed on Friday in US District Court in Washington DC, alleges the White House’s decision to bar AP reporters from the Oval Office and Air Force One violates the US Constitution, including protections for free speech, by trying to control the language that it uses to report the news.
“The press and all people in the United States have the right to choose their own words and not be retaliated against by the government,” the complaint states.
Responding to questions about the lawsuit posed by conservative commentator Mercedes Schlapp, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, speaking during an appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference, said: “We feel we are in the right in this position. We are going to ensure that truth and accuracy is present at that White House every single day.”
Trump signed an executive order in January directing the Interior Department to change the name of the body of water long known as the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
The AP, citing editorial standards, said it would continue to use the gulf’s established name, while acknowledging Trump’s move to change it.
The AP says in its stylebook that the Gulf of Mexico has carried that name for more than 400 years and that it must use identifiers that are easily recognisable for global audiences.
The White House in response barred AP reporters from the Oval Office, where Trump has held several press events since returning to the presidency, and the presidential plane, Air Force One.
Trump’s ban prevents the AP’s journalists from seeing and hearing him and other top White House officials as they take newsworthy actions or respond in real time to news events.
The move has been criticised by several press freedom groups and the White House Correspondents’ Association. Reuters released a statement in support of the AP.
The lawsuit claims the White House’s decision retaliated against the AP over coverage decisions, which are protected under the Constitution. It also alleges the AP did not have an opportunity to challenge the White House’s decision to bar its access.
The lawsuit names Leavitt, chief of staff Susie Wiles and deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich as defendants.
Wiles and Budowich did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The AP is seeking a temporary restraining order declaring the restrictions unlawful and immediately restoring its access to all areas available to the White House press pool.

While We Wait For State Of Decay 3, This Punishing New Zombie Game Is Hitting All The Right Notes
While We Wait For State Of Decay 3, This Punishing New Zombie Game Is Hitting All The Right Notes
I’ve long appreciated State of Decay as the exciting middle ground between an approachable zombie game like Days Gone or Dead Rising, and unforgiving survival sims like DayZ and Project Zomboid. No series or game that I know of has found that same middle ground–harsh, but digestible. But maybe that’s no longer true. While I impatiently await more news for State of Decay 3 from Undead Labs and Xbox, Into The Dead: Our Darkest Days is giving me a similar experience with some welcome twists on the formula.
Into The Dead might be a name-brand undead devotees already know. Previous to now, it’s been the name of a first-person auto-runner series on mobile. They’re neat games, but they really aren’t trying to do too much other than being a gritty, scary, first-person take on something like a Jetpack Joyride–a fun, albeit one-note, time-filler for bus rides or lunch breaks. Our Darkest Days is far from that and more in line with what a console or PC player might expect of a zombie game.
Presented in a 2.5D art style, Into The Dead: Our Darkest Days is essentially a side-scrolling State of Decay, and if that series isn’t already unforgiving enough, it seems like Our Darkest Days also looked to This War of Mine for inspiration. I recently checked out a demo for the upcoming game on PC–a demo you can now play yourself, by the way–and the best thing I can say about it is that I was so impressed that I actually stopped playing at a point when I could’ve gone further, because I want to preserve as much of the experience as I can for when the game is out and my save data will carry over. But I saw enough to know this game is worth that deeper look.
Stealth is key because just a zombie or two could be your undoing.
Each game starts with you picking a pair of characters chosen as a duo. There’s a white-haired high school coach and one of his student-athletes looking for his family, an unexpected couple–an animal rights activist and the rodeo man she once meant to protest–with an even more unexpected baby on the way, a therapist and her anger-managing patient, and more. This surely sounds a lot like State of Decay if you know that series. It, too, gives you a few groups of characters to choose as your starters, albeit a trio in that case.
The comparison goes beyond that. Like in Undead Labs’ excellent series, each character has stats–in Our Darkest Days, they get two passive buffs and a debuff–for you to consider before starting a new game. Also like State of Decay, permadeath is an everpresent threat, and more than just a single zombie or two can spell certain doom for a novice player or a character who may be overtired, injured, or starving.
In order to keep your earliest characters alive, you’ll need to manage your time and their wellbeing. For example, the day-night cycle dictates that you’ll assign characters to tasks, then advance time to have them unfold. If you have a very tired character, you should send them to bed while the other may be called upon to head out into levels that seem to be procedurally generated to a degree, as loot drops and zombie density tend to vary. It only took me a few nights before both my characters weren’t at their best. Darrel, the coach, was a lousy cook, but Leo was too tired to do the cooking himself, so I chose to send Leo to bed while Darrel went on a scavenging run at less than 100%. That was my first mistake.
Set in the eighties in the U.S., the environments reject the drab look of The Walking Dead in favor of some style and flair.
In a level, the goal is to explore as much as you want within its horizontal limitations and then get home safely. You could spend a while filling your pockets to their maximum capacity, or you could ditch the deathtrap in a hurry after you’ve found that one particular healing, cooking, or crafting item you hoped to find. But whatever you choose to do with your time in the danger zone, it’s much easier said than done, especially when your character isn’t at their best. Weapons degrade quickly, and if you don’t pull off a stealth kill, combat is loud enough to probably stir any other undead lingering nearby.
You can find other survivors in your travels too, though you don’t necessarily have to help them. Like the games that clearly inspired this one, another unlucky survivor is another mouth to feed. Each stranded person becomes a cold cost-benefit analysis. Can you spare the resources needed to maintain another member of your community? Then again, having an extra pair of hands to cook, build, or stab a few squishy zombie skulls might be exactly what you need when folks back home are hanging by a thread as it is.
In the pre-alpha demo I played anyway, it seems that discovered (and explicitly invited) survivors make it back home even if you don’t. I know this because, after Darrel found a new lost soul, Rahul, he later died before getting back to base himself. Though I didn’t know Darrel long, I felt the effects of his death back at the base, as those who mourned him, Leo and Rahul, suffered a grief debuff for having experienced the loss. Things were only going to get harder in the days to come for my wounded stragglers in a land the dead had taken like a horrific coup of throat bites and flesh tears.
Splitting the game into both home and away sections gives every decision weight.
My initial reaction when I first saw Our Darkest Days was one of wishing it were more expansive, but after trying the demo, I’ve found there’s a ton of hidden depth for me to explore in what is shaping up to be a familiar–and yet still fresh–zombie saga. Though I generally favor a 3D open-world setting to the more restrictive 2.5D perspective seen here, I also find that, in a world that is already expected to get State of Decay 3 eventually, this different take on many similar ideas is a welcome alternative in the meantime.
Into The Dead: Our Darkest Days feels like it may have all the pieces in place to be a strong emergent story generator, and in my zombie-obsessed opinion, that’s the connective thread that brings all of the best zombie games together. Whether it’s State of Decay, DayZ, or even Left 4 Dead, the all-time greats tend to offer systems that give me the latitude to tell stories of despair or heroism, community or chaos.
The full game is due out later this year. As of now, only a PC launch has been confirmed, but I suspect that may change in the future.

Woman suspected of killing Cal Fire captain was convicted of killing her first spouse
Woman suspected of killing Cal Fire captain was convicted of killing her first spouse
A woman suspected of killing her wife, a Cal Fire captain who battled the Eaton fire last month, was previously convicted of killing her first spouse, records show.
Yolanda Marodi, also known as Yolanda Olejniczak, is a suspect in the slaying of her wife, Rebecca Marodi, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. Rebecca Marodi, 49, was found stabbed to death Monday at a residence in Ramona.
Rebecca and Yolanda Morodi were married for just over two years, according to sheriff’s Lt. Michael Krugh. According to public records, they also shared the same address.
Yolanda Morodi was sentenced in 2004 to 11 years in prison after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the fatal stabbing of her then-husband, James Joseph Olejniczak, according to court records. She served time in prison from 2004 until 2013.
Morodi, 53, is currently at large and authorities are asking for the public’s help in locating her. She is described as 5 feet 2, about 166 pounds with brown hair, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release.

Rebecca Marodi started her career as a volunteer firefighter in 1993 in Moreno Valley and worked as a seasonal firefighter in Riverside and San Bernardino counties from 1994 to 2000, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and the Riverside County Fire Department. She was a fire apparatus engineer in 2007 and promoted to captain in 2022.
Marodi was among the many firefighters who helped battle the deadly Eaton fire last month, according to an Instagram post.
An Instagram account for Yolanda Marodi included a reference to Rebecca Marodi as her wife.
“No special occasion is ever needed, to express my love for my amazing wife,” Yolanda Marodi wrote in a January 2023 post. “I’m so lucky to have married someone that loves me for ME. She truly helps me be a better me, and my life has never been better since she’s been in it. So glad I gave love another chance.”
Rebecca Marodi responded by commenting: “I love you my beautiful wife.”

Richardson wins first British title since big switch
Richardson wins first British title since big switch
Matthew Richardson has claimed his first national jersey for Great Britain after winning the men’s sprint final at the Lloyds National Track Championships in Manchester.
The 25-year-old caused a stir in the aftermath of the Paris Olympics after announcing a switch of nationality from Australia to Great Britain – the country of his birth before his family moved when he was nine.
Richardson made the announcement in the days following the conclusion of the Games, where he won two silver medals and a bronze for Australia.
On Friday, he earned his first British national champion jersey after beating Pete Mitchell 2-0 in the men’s sprint final.
Reflecting on his victory, Richardson said afterwards: “It feels pretty good, I was looking forward to racing nationals, it felt really good to be out here racing so to get out there, first race, first win.”
The first day of action at the National Championships also saw Anna Morris claim victory in the women’s scratch race, while Josh Charlton won the men’s individual pursuit.

The Fed has pulled ‘a rabbit out of a hat,’ strategist says
Roth Capital Partners Chief Economist and Macro Strategist Michael Darda shares his outlook on inflation and Federal Reserve policy on Market Domination.
Darda characterizes the current stock market (^DJI, ^IXIC, ^GSPC) weakness as “a very minor pullback” following two years of “totally uninterrupted stock market gains for the S&P 500.” He notes this pullback is “not surprising,” citing inflated valuations, political uncertainty regarding economic policy, and the Federal Reserve’s “indefinite pause.”
“It’s a bit of a mess from a policy perspective, and that mess is occurring with very high stock market valuations on a historical basis,” Darda explains.
Regarding inflation concerns, Darda suggests there is an “overreaction” in markets, pointing to “very anchored inflation expectations.” However, he cautions, “There are some warning signs here … I mean, it’s really an environment where we’ve had the Fed pull a rabbit out of a hat.”
“They were able to hike interest rates [by] 500-plus basis points, slow inflation, slow nominal growth, and not kill the economy. I mean, it’s really historic, a ****** swan in a good way,” he further tells Yahoo Finance.

Trump Suggests Taking Control of the USPS
Trump Suggests Taking Control of the USPS
President Trump said on Friday that he was considering merging the U.S. Postal Service, an independent federal agency that has wrestled with financial challenges and service lapses, with the Commerce Department.
Mr. Trump was responding to a reporter’s question about an article in The Washington Post saying that he was preparing to dissolve the leadership of the agency and place it under the control of the Commerce Department.
The Postal Service is managed by a bipartisan board of governors — appointed to fixed terms by the president and confirmed by the Senate. Of the nine governors on the board, no more than five of the nine may belong to the same political party, and the group comes together to elect the agency’s leader, the postmaster general.
Mr. Trump confirmed his interest in the merger in remarks at the swearing-in ceremony for Howard Lutnick, the new commerce secretary, on Friday. Mr. Trump said that he intended to keep the Postal Service “a very similar way” but that he was considering a merger or possibly downsizing the agency.
“Whether it is a merger,” Mr. Trump said, “or just using some of the very talented people that we have elsewhere so it does not lose so much — it is losing a tremendous amount of money.”
A recent report by the Postal Service said that it had “recorded $87 billion in financial losses over the last 14 years and failed to meet service standards.” The report also noted the service’s struggles during the pandemic, when a dramatic increase in package deliveries “further stressed an already misaligned and outdated mail network.” The Government Accountability Office, a watchdog agency, has labeled the Postal Service as a “high risk” program vulnerable to waste, fraud and abuse.
The Postal Service, which was once a Cabinet-level department of the government, was reorganized into an independent agency under President Richard Nixon. The Postal Reorganization Act of 1970 established the board of governors as a way to insulate the agency from political pressure while making decisions on postal rates, appointments and salaries. Unions representing postal workers had carried out widespread strikes that year calling for pay increases.
The Postal Service has also been affected by the president’s sweeping agenda on tariffs. The agency had initially halted deliveries of packages from mainland China and Hong Kong after an order by President Trump in January ended duty-free handling of many smaller parcels — but quickly reversed its decision as the widespread ramifications of such a move became apparent.
On Friday, Mr. Trump criticized the Postal Service for its recent financial troubles, suggesting that the agency was inefficient and a drain on the budget.
“We want to have a post office that works well and doesn’t lose massive amounts of money,” he said.

Dave Grohl: Identity of Foo Fighters frontman’s baby mama revealed
Dave Grohl: Identity of Foo Fighters frontman’s baby mama revealed
The identity of the woman who gave birth to Foo Fighter’s frontman Dave Grohl’s lovechild has been revealed.
Jennifer Young has confirmed she is the mother of the child, news of which nearly broke the rocker’s long term marriage and tarnished his nice guy image.
Speaking to the New York Post, Ms Young requested the name of her baby, now aged seven months, not be made public because “there’s some really angry fans”.
Records show the baby shares the legendary musician’s last name.
Ms Young is reportedly a Florida-born music lover who has numerous tattoos, a couple of which have musical theme. One with Paul McCartney lyrics and another with the Metallica logo.
Paparazzi pictures show a blonde-haired Young walking with her daughter in a baby carrier strapped to her chest.
Grohl, 55, was reportedly given an “ultimatum” by his wife Jordyn Blum after she found out he had fathered a child with another woman.
He went public with his marriage woes in September when he posted a bombshell statement on Instagram revealing he’d been unfaithful to his wife of 21 years and welcomed a love child.
An insider has claimed Blum knew about her husband’s new baby long before the rest of the world found out – and going public with the news was one way to help rebuild the trust between them.
“Revealing (the affair and the baby) in the first place was his last-ditch effort to save the marriage because Jordyn knew about it well before the world found out.”
“He would rather remain married.”

Grohl and his wife Blum, 48, share three daughters: Violet, 18, Harper, 15, and Ophelia, 10 — who have become the rocker’s renewed priority after his confession, a source has said.
Grohl has also vowed to be part of his baby daughter’s life but it is not known how much time he has spent with her.
