TV host, content creator and author of the book “Tieng Anh Khong Kho, Dung Nhan Nho (English is not tough, so don’t frown)” Tran Khanh Vy shares her favorite places to hang out in Vietnam’s most populous city.
Vietnam is renowned for its coffee culture. From the high-end cafes to street stalls equipped with iconic low stools and tiny tables, coffee in Vietnam – usually brewed with Robusta beans – packs a punch.
However, the most accessible way to get your caffeine fix in the country is cà phê bệt, which literally translates to “coffee while sitting on the ground.” Coffee sellers usually provide pieces of cardboard or tarps for their customers to use as seats on the ground, making it convenient for students and office workers.
Vietnamese TV host Tran Khanh Vy, who has lived in Ho Chi Minh City for several years, shared her favorite ca phe bet hangout right in the heart of the metropolis at the April 30th Park.
Just a stone’s throw away from there is the Independence Palace, which is Khanh Vy’s second recommendation to visit during downtime.
“If you want to get a really great picture or selfie, come here,” said Khanh Vy, who is also a content creator and author.
Here is the full list of places she recommended to CNBC Travel’s Downtime:
Street coffee near the April 30th park (Cà Phê Bệt at Công Viên 30/4) to get your hassle-free caffeine fix. These makeshift stalls can be found on the sidewalks of Ho Chi Minh City, but the most popular spots can be found near the April 30th Park. Near 6 Alexandre de Rhodes, Bến Nghé, District 1

Burnley maintain push for Premier League promotion
Burnley maintain push for Premier League promotion
Marcus Edwards marked his first Burnley start with a goal as the Clarets kept up the pressure on the sides above them with a 4-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday.
Scott Parker’s side was struggling until Edwards handed them the lead just before half-time.
With the Championship’s top two Leeds and Sheffield United playing each other on Monday, this was a chance to close the gap on the Yorkshire pair and Burnley took advantage with second-half goals from Josh Brownhill, Connor Roberts and Manuel Benson.
Edwards, signed on loan from Sporting Lisbon last month and who was in the Tottenham’s academy when manager Parker was there, opened the scoring after 43 minutes.
He had already clipped the crossbar with a deflected 20th-minute cross that represented Burnley’s only threat to the visitors’ goal until he struck.
Having played a short pass to Josh Cullen, Edwards received the return, benefitted from a ricochet off Shea Charles and showed neat footwork before producing a close-range finish.
It was a cruel way for Danny Rohl’s team to fall behind after they had made light of Burnley’s incredible defensive record this season. The opening 34 league games have seen the Clarets concede just nine goals.
Wednesday missed three great chances to end Burnley’s run of 11 games and 1,000 minutes without conceding in the first 19 minutes alone.
Michael Ihiekwe produced a shot which clipped the outside of the post, winger Djeidi Gassama crossed for Stuart Armstrong, who steered a six-yard shot wide, before Gassama was again the architect, this time setting up Josh Windass, whose effort flew wide via defender Maxime Esteve.
Wednesday started the second half as they had the first, with Windass and Armstrong both having glorious chances blocked by defenders.
As had been the case earlier, Wednesday paid for those misses with Brownhill scoring with his first touch after coming on as a 62nd-minute substitute.
Burnley maintained the pressure from a half-cleared corner, with Josh Laurent sending Jaidon Anthony away down the right and his cross being met by Brownhill, who scored from close range after a superbly-timed run.
The two-goal cushion allowed Burnley to play with more composure and Roberts was somehow unmarked to add a third after 70 minutes, side-footing in from Anthony’s cross.
“Full credit to everyone at the club, for us to be able to get a player like Marcus,” said Parker, who watched the game from the stands while serving a touchline ban.
“I understand his quality. The first time I experienced that was as a 13-year-old at Tottenham and now he’s a Champions League player and he showed his quality throughout.”

Woman drugged men, caused several deaths in romance scam ‘on steroids’
Woman drugged men, caused several deaths in romance scam ‘on steroids’
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A woman with Las Vegas ties allegedly drugged men she met on dating sites and stole their money and personal information, leading to several of their deaths, federal officials announced Friday.
Aurora Phelps, 43, faces nearly a dozen federal charges connected to several incidents from 2019 until 2022, the FBI Las Vegas division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. Phelps has homes in both Las Vegas and Guadalajara, Mexico.
“We believe Aurora Phelps deliberately and methodically targeted older men to drug them and steal from them,” FBI Las Vegas Special Agent In Charge Spencer Evans said Friday.
Investigators suspect Phelps targeted men in their 60s and 70s, sometimes drugging them and then accessing their bank and financial accounts. Phelps also victimized women, Evans said.
“In romance scams, the scammer gains an unsuspecting individual’s affection and trust, then uses the illusion of a romantic or close relationship to manipulate and/or steal from the victim,” federal officials said. “These schemes not only cause significant financial losses, but also deeply impact the lives of victims.”
“Once she incapacitated her victims, Phelps stole their cars, accessed their bank and brokerage accounts to withdraw cash, used their credit cards to make a variety of purchases, including luxury retail goods and gold and even attempted to access their Social Security and retirement accounts,” Evans said.
Several victims lived in the Las Vegas valley, federal officials said. ******** authorities arrested Phelps and she was awaiting extradition to the United States.
The indictment filed against Phelps in federal court in Las Vegas notes four victims who were part of the so-called “romance scam on steroids,” FBI Special Agent In Charge Spencer Evans said.
In one case, Phelps allegedly tried to liquidate more than $3 million in a victim’s stock account, documents said.
It was not immediately clear how long Phelps lived in Las Vegas or when she could return to the U.S. to face charges.
“We believe that she likely encountered other individuals who would have key information and evidence for us or that potentially have a family member that was also victimized by her,” Evans said.
The FBI asked anyone with information to visit a website it launched for the investigation. Tips can also be submitted by calling 800-CALL-FBI.

A statue of late Pope John Paul II stands outside the Gemelli Hospital where Pope Francis is receiving medical treatment
Outside the Gemelli Hospital in Rome stands a large statue of one of its most famous patients, Pope John Paul II.
Made of white Carrara marble, it depicts the pontiff in his later years, stooping and clutching a crucifix, his brow furrowed in pain.
Doctors at the Gemelli hospital helped save John Paul’s life, after he was shot in a failed assassination attempt in St Peter’s Square in May 1981. He underwent a six-hour operation to remove a bullet from his abdomen.
It was the first time a Pope had been treated at Rome’s largest hospital.
Among the hospital’s current patients is Pope Francis, who was admitted last week with a respiratory infection. He has been diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs.
The late Pope John Paul II, pictured during a visit to Ireland, was admitted around 10 times to the Gemelli Hospital
Over the course of his 25 year-long pontificate, John Paul was admitted around 10 times, sometimes for prolonged stays. He received treatment for various illnesses, including a benign intestinal tumour, a broken hip and a tracheotomy, when his Parkinson’s disease was at an advanced stage.
The Gemelli, which is a Catholic teaching hospital, opened in the 1960s. With more than 1500 beds, it is one of the biggest private hospitals in Europe.
Built on land donated by Pope Pius XI to the theologian and physician Agostino Gemelli in 1934, it has become known as the “Pope’s Hospital.” John Paul II even nicknamed it “******** Three,” with St Peter’s Square being ******** One, and the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo, ******** Two.
In the 1980s, the Gemelli set up a special Papal suite, which is still in use today.

It’s a small apartment on the tenth floor, an all-white suite with austere, simple furnishings. As well as the bedroom and bathroom, there is a living room, with a sofa bed for his aides and a chapel with a kneeler and a large crucifix, where the Pope can attend or celebrate mass and say prayers.
The long access corridor, leading to the suite is guarded by Italian State Police, the ******** Gendarmerie and hospital security.
The Papal suite is reserved for popes, but other patients are treated on the same floor.
There’s a balcony where the Pope can appear to greet the faithful and say the weekly Angelus prayer.
Well-wishers often gather in the square outside the hospital to pray for the health of the pontiff. Flowers, cards, photos and candles are often laid at the foot of the statue of John Paul II.

According to official announcements, Pope Benedict XVI was never admitted to the hospital during his 8-year papacy, although he visited when his brother received treatment there in 2014.
Pope Francis has been treated at the Gemelli several times. In 2013, he had an operation on his colon. He was treated for infectious bronchitis in March 2023, and had surgery for an intestinal hernia later that year.
He has often been seen thanking his medical team and other hospital workers. At the end of one stay, he baptised a newborn baby, and shared a pizza dinner with his doctors, nurses, assistants and ******** security personnel.

A federal judge in Maryland on Friday temporarily blocked President Donald Trump from implementing bans on diversity, equity and inclusion programs at federal agencies and by businesses that contract with the federal government.
U.S. District Judge Adam Abelson said the directives by Trump and an order urging the Department of Justice to investigate companies with DEI policies likely violate the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
The orders are part of Trump’s larger efforts to eradicate DEI initiatives, which critics say are discriminatory, from the government and the private sector.
Abelson blocked Trump and several federal agencies from implementing the orders pending the outcome of a lawsuit by the city of Baltimore and three groups.
“As Plaintiffs put it, ‘efforts to foster inclusion have been widespread and uncontroversially legal for decades,'” wrote Abelson “Plaintiffs’ irreparable harms include widespread chilling of unquestionably protected speech.”

Child exploitation and cuckooing to be made criminal offences
Child exploitation and cuckooing to be made criminal offences
Child criminal exploitation and “cuckooing” are set to become specific criminal offences as part of new legislation being introduced to Parliament next week.
The Crime and Policing Bill will also include measures that could see restriction orders put on people thought to be at risk of exploiting children for criminal means.
Cuckooing is when the home of a vulnerable person is taken over by criminals who use it as a base for ******** activities, such as drug dealing.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said exploitation like this was “sickening”, adding that legislation would ensure victims were “properly protected and prevent these often hidden crimes from occurring in the first place”.
“It is vital we do everything in our power to eradicate it from our streets,” she said.
Under current CPS guidelines, prosecutors dealing with a suspected case of cuckooing may look to other offences such as assault, harassment and modern day slavery in order to bring charges – but these might not cover all examples.
The previous Conservative government had announced plans to criminalise cuckooing in its Criminal Justice Bill last year, but this legislation made no further progress when Parliament was dissolved for the snap general election.
The child criminal exploitation (CCE) offence in Labour’s bill is designed to target people who groom children into criminal activity, including county lines drug dealing or organised robbery, the Home Office says.
Around 14,500 children were identified as being at risk of CCE in 2023-24, though the government says that is likely to be an underestimated figure.
The cuckooing offence will carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison, while the standalone child criminal exploitation offence will carry a maximum sentence of 10 years.
The legislation will also see the introduction of CCE prevention orders, which will mean that courts can put restrictions on people who they believe pose a risk of exploiting a child for criminal purposes.
Breaking these orders will also be a criminal offence, carrying a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
Dame Rachel de Souza, the ***’s Children’s Commissioner, has said the measures will provide “clarity that exploited children are victims”.
“Many children targeted by adult criminals themselves face punishment instead of support,” she said.
“Like too many child victims, they are often ignored and overlooked. Their voices and experiences must be listened to, if we are to create a child-centric justice system that puts safeguarding at its heart.”
The bill will also include plans to explicitly outlaw spiking, with a new offence that will carry a prison term of up to 10 years.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ corruption case continues for now, judge rules
NYC Mayor Eric Adams’ corruption case continues for now, judge rules
Mayor Eric Adams addresses latest federal corruption case developments
Mayor Eric Adams addresses latest federal corruption case developments
05:50
The corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams will continue, for now.
A judge on Friday appointed outside attorney Paul Clement to argue before the court over the U.S. Department of Justice’s request to drop the federal charges.
Clement is a former U.S. solicitor general who has argued more than 100 cases before the Supreme Court. Clement, of Clement and Murphy PLLC, is considered a political conservative, and was appointed by the judge as an amicus curiae, or friend of the court.
The court has ordered that legal briefs be submitted by March 7 and, if needed, oral arguments in the case will take place at 2 p.m. March 14.
The decision came after Judge Dale Ho held a Wednesday hearing for prosecutors, Adams and his attorneys to discuss the requested dismissal. Prosecutors said the case interfered with Adams’ 2025 mayoral campaign and his ability to cooperate with the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. The hearing did not include anyone presenting opposition to dropping the case.
“Normally, courts are aided in their decision-making through our system of adversarial testing, which can be particularly helpful in cases presenting unusual fact patterns or in cases of great public importance,” Judge Ho wrote.
“The Court notes that it has considered the parties’ views with respect to the appointment of amicus and concludes that an appointment is appropriate here to assist the court’s decision making,” Judge Ho wrote. “That is particularly so in light of the public importance of this case, which calls for careful deliberation.”
The judge also noted that in light of the concerns raised by parties in court Wednesday about Adams’ responsibilities and the burden of the court, the mayor doesn’t have to appear at future proceedings related to this.
Meanwhile, Adams’ trial, which had been set for April 21, has been taken off the calendar indefinitely.
“The Court reiterates that it understands the importance of prompt resolution of the pending motion and will endeavor to rule expeditiously after briefing (and, if necessary, oral argument) is complete,” Judge Ho wrote.
Justice Department’s rationale for dropping the case
Adams was indicted last September on five counts of bribery, conspiracy and campaign finance violations, including allegations he accepted ******** campaign donations from Turkish businessmen in exchange for political favors. Adams vehemently denied the charges and suggested they were brought as payback for his criticism of the Biden administration’s handling of the border and the migrant crisis.
In requesting prosecutors drop the charges, the Department of Justice said the case “has unduly restricted Mayor Adams’ ability to devote full attention and resources to the ******** immigration and violent crime” in New York City.
The DOJ request, however, noted that it “reached this conclusion without assessing the strength of the evidence or the legal theories on which the case is based.”
DOJ request leads to numerous resignations
The request to drop the case led to a flurry of resignations, including Danielle Sassoon, the acting U.S. attorney of the Southern District of New York. In her resignation letter, Sassoon said the Justice Department’s request to drop charges “raises serious concerns,” left her “baffled,” and she thought amounted to an “improper offer of immigration enforcement assistance in exchange for a dismissal in the case.”
“It is a breathtaking and dangerous precedent to reward Adams’s opportunistic and shifting commitments on immigration and other policy matters with dismissal of a criminal indictment. Nor will a court likely find that such an improper exchange is consistent with the public interest,” Sassoon wrote.
“The idea that there was a quid pro quo is a total lie. We offered nothing and the department asked nothing of us,” Adams’ attorney Alex Spiro told CBS News.
Adams faced blowback from within his own administration after Sassoon leveled that accusation. Four deputy mayors resigned after word came down that the DOJ would seek to drop charges.
That prompted Gov. Kathy Hochul to call a meeting with various key leaders to discuss whether Adams should remain in office or whether she should use her power to remove him – something that has never been done in New York’s 235-year history.
Hochul ultimately decided to impose what she called “guardrails” on Adams. She announced three actions aimed at limiting Adams’ power by letting other city officials go around him to challenge Trump administration actions.
“While there is no legal basis for limiting New Yorkers’ power by limiting the authority of my office, I have told the governor, as we have done in the past, that I am willing to work with her to ensure faith in our government is strong,” Adams said in a statement.
What is Adams accused of?
In the historic indictment, federal prosecutors alleged the mayor abused his power for nearly a decade, soliciting ******** campaign donations from wealthy foreign businesspeople and corporations, including at least one Turkish government official.
Prosecutors said Adams received undisclosed gifts, including luxury travel arrangements, worth more than $100,000 in exchange for political favors. In one instance, he was accused of pressuring the FDNY to green light approval for a Turkish consulate building in Manhattan, despite safety concerns.
“I want to be clear, these upgrades and freebies were not part of some frequent flyer or loyalty program available to the general public. As we allege, this was a multi-year scheme to buy favor with a single New York City politician on the rise,” then-U.S. District Attorney for the Southern District Damian Williams announced when the indictment was unsealed.
The 57-page indictment alleges the Adams campaign used so-called straw donors to hide the source and the amount of the illicit contributions. By doing so, the campaign also tapped into $10 million from a matching funds program.
Prosecutors say the undisclosed travel dates back to 2016, and they claim the mayor continued to solicit donations as recently as 2023 for his reelection campaign.
“Public office is a privilege. We allege that Mayor Adams abused that privilege and broke the law — laws that are designed to ensure that officials like him serve the people, not the highest bidder, not a foreign bidder, and certainly not a foreign power,” said Williams. “These are bright red lines, and we allege that the mayor crossed them again and again for years.”
The district attorney also alleged that once Adams learned of the federal investigation, he and his team engaged in a “clumsy cover-up” and even “created fake paper trails.”
Prosecutors hinted more charges may be forthcoming and said as recently as last month they had uncovered “additional criminal conduct.” Weeks later, sources told CBS News prosecutors were in talks with the DOJ about dropping the case.
Feds also investigating Adams’ inner circle
Adams’ federal indictment followed multiple investigations into his campaign and other officials in his administration.
The flurry of federal activity led to several high-level resignations, including NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban, whose home was raided and phones were seized, along with his twin brother, James Caban, who allegedly worked as a fixer for restaurants and nightclubs to smooth things over with law enforcement.
Other departures came from Schools Chancellor David Banks, his wife Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright and his brother Deputy Mayor Philip Banks III. Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan also stepped down, and two members of the mayor’s administration were indicted on charges.
Adams’ longtime advisor Ingrid Lewis-Martin pleaded not guilty to bribery, money laundering and conspiracy in a case involving her son and two real estate developers. The mayor’s former liaison for the ******* community, Mohamed Bahi, was also charged with conspiracy for his role in collecting ******** donations for Adams’ 2021 mayoral campaign and has agreed to plead guilty, according to court documents.

Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff talks role
Gen. Charles “C.Q.” Brown Jr. on his role as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

President Trump abruptly fired Air Force Gen. Charles Q. Brown as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Friday, sidelining a history-making fighter pilot and respected officer as part of a campaign to rid the military of leaders who support diversity and equity in the ranks.
The ouster of Brown, only the second ****** general to serve as chairman, is sure to send shock waves through the Pentagon. His 16 months in the job had been consumed with the war in Ukraine and the expanded conflict in the Middle East.
“I want to thank General Charles ‘CQ’ Brown for his over 40 years of service to our country, including as our current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He is a fine gentleman and an outstanding leader, and I wish a great future for him and his family,” Mr. Trump posted on social media.
Mr. Trump says he is nominating Air Force Lt. Gen. Dan “Razin” Caine to be the next chairman.
Mr. Trump acted despite support for Brown among key members of Congress and a seemingly friendly meeting with him in mid-December, when the two were seated next to each other for a time at the Army-Navy football game. Brown had been meeting regularly with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who took over the top Pentagon job just four weeks ago.

Are planes crashing more often?
Are planes crashing more often?
Joshua Cheetham, Yi Ma & Matt Murphy
BBC Verify

After a series of high-profile disasters, some social media users suggested that air travel accidents were becoming more frequent.
Videos of hair-raising near misses began to trend online and the US Transport Secretary Sean Duffy sought to calm fears in an interview with the BBC’s US partner, CBS News. He told viewers that the recent spate of air disasters in America were “very unique”.
Duffy’s intervention came after several serious incidents, including a mid-air collision in January between a commercial airliner and a military helicopter in Washington DC, in which 67 people died.
Footage of a plane flipping over after landing in poor weather in Toronto, Canada, has also been widely shared online, further fuelling alarm.
And while polling on the subject is limited, one recent Associated Press survey suggested these startling images of accidents have had some impact on some US consumers’ confidence in flying.
But BBC Verify has analysed data in the US and worldwide and found that over the past two decades there has been a general downward trend in air accidents.
For the US, figures on air accidents have been compiled by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) up to the end of January this year.
This NTSB data shows a general fall in air accidents in the US from 2005 to 2024 despite a significant increase in the overall number of flights over this *******. It also shows that the figure for January 2025 (52), was lower than it was in January last year (58) and January 2023 (70).
Data from International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), a UN body which monitors global air incidents, shows that the number of worldwide accidents per million plane departures has also seen a clear downward trend between 2005 and 2023.
The ICAO definition of an aircraft accident is very broad and not only includes those in which passengers or crew are seriously injured or die, but also incidents where an aircraft is damaged and needs repairs, or goes missing.
Data on the number of deaths in air accidents globally also shows that there has been a decrease over the same *******, albeit with spikes in some years reflecting major air disasters.
In 2014, two such events contributed to a significant spike.
In March, Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 disappeared as it travelled from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board. In July, another Malaysian Airlines plane, MH17, was shot down by a Russian-made missile over eastern Ukraine, killing almost 300.
Data sets such as this are inclined to see sudden, large fluctuations, Prof Sir David Spiegelhalter, Emeritus Professor of Statistics at the University of Cambridge, told BBC Verify.
“If you count fatalities rather than accidents it’s bound to be extremely volatile and sensitive to a single large accident,” he said.
“Random events do not occur evenly – they tend to cluster. So unfortunately we can expect aircraft accidents to be appear to be connected, even when they are not.”
In regards to the series of high-profile accidents over the past few months, Ismo Aaltonen, formerly Finland’s chief air disaster investigator, told BBC Verify they are not an indication of a decline in aircraft safety.
“It’s very unlucky that we had this ******* of many different kind of accidents, but people should not draw any conclusions based on this because they are such different cases,” he said.
He noted that some incidents over the past few months were unforeseeable, citing an Azerbaijan Airlines flight which crashed in Kazakhstan in December after being targeted by a Russian anti-aircraft missile.
Marco Chan, a former pilot and senior lecturer at Buckinghamshire New University, told BBC Verify that the rise in awareness of air disasters is being further fuelled because “accidents are getting increasing exposure from social media platforms”.
One video circulating on TikTok – which has been pulled from a Superman film – shows the hero preventing a jet from smashing into a stadium. Accompanying the clip is the caption: “Pete Buttigieg every single day the last four years, judging by current events.” The viral clip suggests that aviation disasters have grown since the ex-US transportation secretary left office in January.
A string of incidents in recent years involving the Boeing 737 Max aircraft has also attracted significant attention in the media and on social media, especially after a door blew out mid-flight in January 2024.
Concerns over that and several other incidents saw some customers boycott planes manufactured by Boeing and a collapse in the company’s share price.
NTSB
Boeing shares tumbled last year after the door of one of its jets blew off mid-flight
Experts told BBC Verify that incidents such as these and major crashes are thoroughly investigated by authorities. New details and data from accidents are fed into pilot training simulators so that they can prepare for similar scenarios in the future.
“If you look at simulators today, how advanced they are, they are like real aircraft,” said Ismo Aaltonen. “It’s completely different to when I started flying more than 40 years ago.”
Regulators can also impose penalties for safety violations which include fines, license suspensions and operational restrictions. Airlines can also be banned from countries and blocs if they don’t adhere to safety standards.
Despite the recent spate of incidents, air travel remains by far the safest form of travel.
Of all transport-related deaths in 2022 in the US, over 95% occurred on the road, according to the latest available figures from the US Department of Transportation. Fewer than 1% were related to air travel.
And if you look at the figures in terms of fatalities per distance travelled, the comparative safety of air travel is even clearer.
In 2022, there were just 0.001 passenger deaths per 100,000 miles onboard airlines, compared to 0.54 in passenger vehicles, according to the most recent figures from the National Safety Council, a US-based non-profit organisation.
“Be careful how you make your trip to the airport” said Mr Aaltonen. “That’s the most dangerous part of the trip compared to the actual flight.”

The choice of Daniel Craig’s replacement will now be Amazon MGM Studios’ biggest decision.
So let’s take a look at what direction the company could take, and who is in the frame.
Getty Images
Could Henry Cavill go from playing Super Man to James Bond?
If the replies to Bezos’s call out are anything to go by, Henry Cavill is the (online) people’s choice.
The former Super Man actor, who has said he “would love to play Bond”, was widely regarded to have been the runner-up years ago when Craig landed the part for the first of his five 007 films, 2006’s Casino Royale.
The movie’s director Martin Campbell told the Express last year that Cavill’s audition was “tremendous” and that “if Daniel didn’t exist, Henry would have made an excellent Bond”.
There was just one problem. “He just looked a little young at that time back then,” added Campbell.
Longstanding Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson, who announced on Thursday they were stepping down, have previously shot down the idea of a younger Bond.
“Remember, Bond’s already a veteran,” Wilson said in 2022. “He’s had some experience. He’s a person who has been through the wars, so to speak. He’s probably been in the SAS or something.”
Amazon may have different ideas – but at 41, Cavill could ironically now be considered too old, especially if he stays for a string of subsequent movies.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s name has been regularly mentioned in relation to 007
The next most common suggestions in the replies to Bezos were Tom Hardy, Aaron Taylor-Johson and Idris Elba.
Taylor-Johnson, 34, known for roles in Kick-**** and Kraven the Hunter, was at one stage rumoured to have been offered the job, but no announcement ever materialised.
Kraven bombed at the box office last year, though, which could count against him.
The bookmakers had Happy Valley actor James Norton listed as their favourite on Friday.
Speaking on the red carpet at last weekend’s Bafta Awards, Norton, 39, described the speculation around him becoming Bond as “so weird and bemusing” yet “fun”.
‘Bring it younger’
Mark O’Connell, author of Catching Bullets: Memoirs of a Bond Fan, told the BBC he thinks Amazon – and whoever they choose as the next director – will go for a younger actor than in previous times, and he hopes they buy British again.
“Tom Hardy would be great, [but] I think he’s, dare I say, too old,” he said of the 47-year-old Mad Max actor.
“There’s a lot of guys that keep getting quoted [and] I’m like, they’re too old.
“I think Amazon’s going to bring it younger. I think we’re looking at early 30s. Paul Mescal is a good name. Kingsley Ben-Adir, who’s one of the Kens in the Barbie movie, I’d keep an eye on him – he’s got a sort of [Sean] Connery swagger about him.
British DNA
“Harris Dickinson, who’s a British actor doing well in Babygirl with Nicole Kidman at the moment, he’s very British,” O’Connell added.
“I hope they stick with the British DNA and origins of the role. I think they would be foolish to move away from that. But time will tell.”
Bond has been played by two non-British actors in the past – *********** George Lazenby and Irishman Pierce Brosnan. So don’t rule out the likes of fellow Irish stars Mescal, Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, Aidan Turner, or Aussie Jacob Elordi.
Could Amazon break the mould and go for the first American Bond? If so, Austin Butler has been mooted.

Kingsley Ben-Adir features in the Barbie film and played Bob Marley on the big screen
Other Brits who have been shaken but not stirred into the mix include Challengers star Josh O’Connor, 34, and Babylon’s Stuart Martin, 39, as well as White Lotus actor Theo James, who is 40.
Callum Turner, Richard Madden, Will Poulter and Nicholas Hoult have also been suggested, among others.
‘Teasing Bond’s masculine ego’
Since Bond – originally the creation of author Ian Fleming – hit the big screen in 1962, first played by Scotsman Sean Connery, his hair and eye colour have changed, not to mention his accent.
But so far, the character’s skin colour and gender have remained fixed.
That is apart from when Lashana ****** briefly took over the 007 title from Craig’s Bond in No Time to Die.
“James Bond can be of any colour, but he is male,” Broccoli said in 2020.
“I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that.”
She added: “He should be British, so British can be any [ethnicity].”
Bridgerton actor Rege-Jean Page has been mooted alongside Ben-Adir as a possible first non-white Bond, as have Lucien Laviscount, Paapa Essiedu, Damson Idris, Riz Ahmed and Aaron Pierre.
If Bezos does break Broccoli’s rule and go for a woman, Cynthia Erivo would be a popular choice.
However, Idris Elba, 52, the star of The Wire and Luther, said in 2023 that the racist backlash to the prospect of him being Bond “made the whole thing disgusting and off-putting”.
Getty Images

It’s not just the lead role that the Amazon casting department will have to think about.
“In terms of what they could do with the women, I would love to see more interesting and nuanced female characters,” said Monica Germanà, author of Bond Girls: Body, Fashion and Gender.
“There is a growing female fandom, so we want more interesting female characters teasing Bond’s masculine ego.”
Then there are the villains, who are the characters with their “pulse on the real world”, Germanà said.
“They represent the anxieties we have about the world. So it’d be interesting what Amazon does with that. Will the next villain be, I don’t know, will it be AI? Will it be something to do with climate change? Will it be far-right politics that they tap into?”
‘Rediscover the fun’
Debating the next James Bond is “a national and international obsession”, BBC Radio 1 film critic Ali Plumb told BBC Breakfast.
“I want to have an answer for you. I want to say names like Harris Dickinson or Leo Woodall and say, yes, it’s going to be them. But it’s all up in the air.”
Chris Hewitt of Empire magazine and podcast told BBC Radio 5 Live that while he “admired what Craig has achieved”, he wants the new management “to rediscover the fun of Bond”.
Bond fan and author Ajay Chowdhury added: “I think Bond ultimately is fantasy and it’s fun and I think that entertainment value could be brought back.”
Bond bosses have often alternated between serious and lighter-hearted lead actors, he said.
“They always tend to reboot. You have a serious Bond [like Timothy] Dalton followed by a lighter Bond, Brosnan. Serious, Craig – and I think it’s time to do that again.”
Getty Images
At 28-years-old, Harris Dickinson would mark a move in a younger direction
Chowdhury thinks the new Bond will be “an established British actor” with what he calls “the Goldilocks amount of fame” – not too hot, not too cold.
“They’ll have done TV and theatre across the Atlantic, but they won’t be stars,” he offers.
“They’ll have just the right amount of fame and they’ll be young enough to do three or four [films].
“Who is it? We have no idea!”

Video shows mini-bike riders run red light, slam into SUV in Beverly Hills
A video recorded over the weekend shows two mini-bike riders slamming into the side of an SUV while running a red light in Beverly Hills.
The collisions with the Range Rover occurred just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday on Rodeo Drive, according to Street People Media, who shared the video with KTLA.
The SUV driver stopped after the ****** as even more mini-bike riders pulled up to the scene and waved for help. One of the injured bikers was seen crawling away from the SUV after the ******.
At that point, perhaps not knowing that another rider was still down, the SUV began to move forward but stopped again when the group started to yell.

Zelensky can change Trump’s mind on support, says Ukraine official
Russia is achieving its aim of emerging from “diplomatic isolation” a senior Ukrainian official has told the BBC.
Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Ihor Brusylo, told the BBC’s International editor Jeremy Bowen that President Trump’s stance on the war was “alarming”, but President Zelensky would change Trump’s mind on how to end the conflict.
He also said that the *** would need to increase its defence budget as the threat from Russia grows.

Russians on the invasion of Ukraine, three years on
Russians on the invasion of Ukraine, three years on
Steve Rosenberg
Russia editor
BBC
Recruitment posters for the invasion of Ukraine are everywhere in Russia
Driving into Tver, the first thing I notice are the soldiers.
They’re everywhere. On billboards, the sides of buildings, at bus stops. Portraits with the words “Hero of Russia”. Posters of troops with Kalashnikov rifles encouraging the public to “Love, be proud of and defend” Russia.
In other words, to sign up and go and fight in Ukraine. Three years after its full-scale invasion of its neighbour, Russia is seeking new recruits.
Despite all the military imagery around town, if you live in Tver it’s possible to convince yourself that life is normal. The front line is hundreds of miles away.
“Just look around,” Mikhail, a local teacher, tells me. “Cars are passing by and all the shops are open. No shells are falling from anywhere. We are not panicking. We can’t hear any sirens wailing. We do not run to any evacuation points.”
For many Russians their invasion of Ukraine – what the Kremlin still calls a “special military operation” – is something they only encounter on their TV screens.
But for people like Anna, it’s much more real.
Some people Anna knew never came back from fighting in Ukraine
“I know a lot of people who went off to fight,” Anna says when we get chatting on the street.
“Some of them never came home. I hope [the war] ends as soon as possible.”
Donald Trump claims that’s what he wants, too. Without inviting Ukraine to the negotiating table, the Trump administration has already entered direct talks with the Russian leadership.
What do Russians make of the US president and his overtures to Moscow?
“Trump is a dark horse,” believes Anna. “I’m not sure what to expect from him.”
‘We want Ukraine’s total capitulation’
Some of the people I talk to in Tver repeat the official narrative they have been hearing for the last three years on state TV: that their country is not the aggressor, that Russia is defending Russians and Russian-speakers in Ukraine and liberating, not occupying, territory.
It doesn’t mean that Russian society as a whole buys into this alternative reality.
“In a society people always prefer to be in the mainstream,” believes Andrei Kolesnikov, a columnist for newtimes.ru and Novaya Gazeta. “If the mainstream is pro-war and the TV says that we are at war with the West, the average citizen will think like this. It’s easier not to think about the details. You want to live peacefully, so why not join the majority?
“Some researchers call this the foetal position. When you defend yourself from this unexplainable world you look like a baby. You say: ‘I can’t explain to myself what is happening. I believe you. You can feed me with words. I’ll accept it.’ This is typical for all societies of this kind: a bit authoritarian, a bit totalitarian.”
Larissa and her husband Valery willingly accept the official line.
“We’re all for the special military operation,” Larissa tells me. “We’re ready to volunteer and go there ourselves!”
They haven’t yet, clearly.
“We hope [Russia] will be victorious. We want Ukraine’s total capitulation.”
The police turn up. They’ve received a call informing them that “suspicious-looking people with a camera” are going around Tver. Meaning us.
Russian police asked the BBC about their reporting in Tver
They’re polite but want to know why we’re here. They take a statement from our driver. They check our vehicle. They ask me for an official explanation for our visit. I tell them we’re gauging the mood away from Moscow. We show our documents, which are in order.
While we’ve been talking to the officers, a camera crew from Russian state TV has pitched up and started filming us.
“We were just passing,” says the reporter, “and we spotted the police and recognised you. Can you tell me what’s going on?”
“I don’t know,” I reply. “Perhaps you can tell us?”
“What have you been filming?”
“We’ve been talking to people on the street,” I say. “I believe we’re allowed to do that.”
“Yes, in our country we have freedom of speech,” the reporter replies. “Perhaps the police just want to help you? It’s unpleasant to hear Western TV spreading fake news that there’s no free speech in Russia. You’re talking to people freely and no one gets in your way.”
“Apart from you,” I point out. “And the police officers standing next to our car.”
Russian state TV also interviewed the BBC about what they were doing
The incident, which lasted about an hour, is no real surprise. Three years of war have fuelled suspicion of the West inside Russia. Early signs of a thaw in US-Russian relations have yet to change that.
From talking to people in Tver it becomes clear that Russians are hoping that an end to the fighting will bring economic relief.
“Prices are so high now for the things I need most,” says Yulia as she rocks her baby to sleep in a pram. “Like the price of potatoes and onions. I really feel it.”
But teacher Mikhail doesn’t feel that Donald Trump has any strategy for securing peace.
“Unfortunately, Trump hasn’t got any plan,” believes Mikhail. “He is an improviser. He doesn’t know what he’s going to do. My sympathies are with him. I’m glad he won. But speaking about this episode, we’re all in the dark. And Trump is in the dark himself.”

Archaeologists Just Uncovered a Rare Roman Helmet That May Indicate a Mysterious Ritual
Archaeologists Just Uncovered a Rare Roman Helmet That May Indicate a Mysterious Ritual
Fragments of a rare Roman-era helmet were discovered alongside nearly 200 weapons, all buried in the foundations of two homes in Denmark.
The first-of-its-kind find outside the borders of the Roman Empire add a level of intrigue to the origins of the stash.
A surprisingly well-preserved shirt of Iron Age chainmail added another level of significance alongside the helmet, swords, and spears.
Somehow, a Roman-era warrior ended up in Denmark roughly 1,600 years ago with enough weaponry to outfit a small army. He buried the hoard as some sort of offering before either the construction or demolition of two houses, in the process stashing away fragments of a rare Roman helmet, impressive chainmail, and nearly 200 spearheads, swords, lances, and horse equipment.
It’s all been found.
As part of an excavation as the Danish Road Directorate is expanding the local highway to three lanes at Løsning Søndermark between Vejle and Horsens in Denmark, researchers made “remarkable finds,” according to Vejle’s museum organization, of the Iron Age haul buried within the foundations of two structures. Experts believe the way the weapons were situated within the holes for key load-bearing posts show it was an offering to a higher power during demolition and construction.
It took a little sleuthing to figure out that the fragments of “unusual iron plates,” both about the size of a palm of a hand, were pieces from a unique helmet. Using X-ray imaging, archaeologists looked beneath the layers of rust on the two plates and found one was a neck guard and the other a decorated cheek guard from a crest helmet, popular in the Roman Empire in the fourth century.
“Roman helmet finds from the Iron Age are exceptionally rare in southern Scandinavia, and there are no direct parallels to this discovery,” the museum wrote in a statement, adding this is the first of its kind found in Denmark.
Almost equally rare was the discovery of an “exceptionally well-preserved” chainmail shirt at the site, the first in Scandinavia found tied to a settlement and not a burial or bog find. The chainmail—reserved for an elite in society due to the expense of purchasing the piece originally—was excavated within a block of soil to allow researchers to more carefully study it later.
The team located fragments of two bronze neck rings, similar to others found belonging to Iron Age rulers, believed to be personal equipment of the chieftain responsible for the weapon burial.
The burial of nearly 200 pieces of weapons were separated between two different homes, one archaeologists believe was made during the demolition of a home, where the weapons were placed in the holes left behind, and the other during the construction of a home, with the equipment tightly packed around load-bearing posts.
“The nature of these deposits suggests that the weapons were part of ceremonies or sacrificial rituals associated with a chieftain’s residence,” the researchers wrote. “This indicates that they are not remnants of a weapons workshop, military barracks, or similar contexts.”
And that raises more questions, which the team hopes to answer by analyzing the material to “hopefully reveal whether the equipment belongs to local warriors or if it represents spoils of war from a defeated army.”

Leicester: Anger, toxicity and growing disconnect – what next for Foxes?
Leicester: Anger, toxicity and growing disconnect – what next for Foxes?
The disconnect between the club and the fanbase is only growing, as evidenced on Friday.
Whelan and club directors did meet Foxes Trust co-chairs Lynn Wyeth and Steve Moulds, members of the Supporter Engagement team, and the supporter representatives on the LCFC Fan Advisory Board last week in what was described as a frank and candid discussion.
“You need some leadership when it goes wrong. You need people to come out and reassure us,” said Wyeth.
“That lack of communication was causing frustration, anger and toxicity in the games.
“Other fans can’t understand it. They’re like, ‘Leicester fans are so ungrateful, they’re so entitled. They think because they won the Premier League once they don’t know how lucky they are with their owner’.
“It’s not about that. We are so grateful for what that family’s done [owners the Srivaddhanaprabha family] and what an amazing time we’ve had, but it’s how badly wrong it’s gone in the last few years.”
It is up to Van Nistelrooy to get a tune out of what he has, but of Leicester’s summer buys, none have made a consistent impact.
Midfielder Oliver Skipp, a £20m signing from Tottenham, has struggled for form, while defender Caleb Okoli, who joined from Atalanta for £15m, only made his first start under the Dutchman last week.
Moroccan attacker El Khannouss, a £21m arrival from Genk, has shown flashes of potential – including the winner at Spurs – but remains green to the league.
Odsonne Edouard has made just four substitute appearances in the top flight, with the striker’s move from Crystal Palace useless and tying up a vital loan spot, while right-back Woyo Coulibaly was the only January arrival.
“It’s really difficult to judge him (Van Nistelrooy) because he hasn’t got the squad,” added Wyeth. “They weren’t good enough to stay up last time and we’ve got worse players now.”
Despite a ********** run of form, Leicester are by no means cut adrift in the table.
They are level on points with Ipswich in 18th and only two points behind Wolves in 17th, although they have played a game more than both.
The Foxes’ Premier League-winning captain Wes Morgan, who also helped them avoid the drop in 2013-14, is confident they can defy the odds once again.
“It has been proven that it can be done [teams can get out of the relegation battle]. I was part of the team that did it,” he said.
“I am sure the fans are disappointed with how things have been going in recent weeks. Things can change, we know it has happened in the past.
“It is not too late.”

OpenAI confirms 400 million weekly ChatGPT users – here’s 5 great ways to use the world’s most popular AI chatbot
OpenAI confirms 400 million weekly ChatGPT users – here’s 5 great ways to use the world’s most popular AI chatbot
ChatGPT is used by 400 million people a week, as confirmed by OpenAI in a Reuters report. That’s a shocking number, considering the AI chatbot is only a little over two years old. It makes ChatGPT one of the most widely used digital tools on the planet, putting it in the same league as search engines and social media platforms.
ChatGPT was a huge hit from its debut, hitting 1 million users in five days after launching in November of 2022. But, the pace of adoption has only accelerated, as, in December, it had reached 300 million weekly users, but its numbers have rocketed up by 100 million just two months later.
But just because a lot of people use ChatGPT doesn’t mean they’re all experts. You might still be only scratching the surface of what ChatGPT can actually do. If you want to really put ChatGPT through its paces, here are some tips.
Be specific
How you ask ChatGPT for something dramatically affects what you get in return. If you type in something like, “Tell me about the French Revolution,” sure, it’ll give you a solid history lesson. But if you want more than a thumbnail explanation, get specific. Ask for an explanation of how the French Revolution impacted modern democracy, written in the style of a political thriller. Or tell it to summarize the causes of the revolution from the perspective of Marie Antoinette’s hairdresser.
ChatGPT is better when you add more detail. If you want help finding a job, don’t just ask, “Can you help me with my resume?” Instead, say, “I’m applying for a marketing manager role at a sustainability-focused company. Can you help me write a resume summary that highlights my experience in digital campaigns and environmental advocacy?” That gets the AI to really drill into ways to help you personally, not just on a general level.
Tell ChatGPT who to be
One of the best ChatGPT tricks is getting the AI to play a role. Instead of making it guess what kind of response you want, you can tell it to become a character. If you need legal advice, though not the type that will hold up in court, you could say, “You’re an expert in intellectual property law. Explain how trademarks work in the fashion industry.” If you’re stuck on a creative project, tell ChatGPT, “You’re a veteran screenwriter. Help me outline a sci-fi movie about time travel paradoxes.”
When you assign ChatGPT a role, you’ll notice its responses become sharper, more relevant, and more insightful as it sifts through its databases for how to behave and respond like the kind of person you tell it to be. It’s the difference between asking a random stranger for advice and sitting down with an actual expert, except, in this case, the expert just happens to be a chatbot with a deep knowledge base.
Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.
Don’t take the first answer as final
One of the most common mistakes people make is treating ChatGPT like Google or another search engine. Sure, you can ask a question and get an answer or a link, but that should be only the beginning. It’s like treating a world-class chef as a vending machine.
Instead, think of ChatGPT as your brainstorming buddy, helping shape your ideas and getting shaped in turn by your prompts. If it gives you an answer that’s too formal, tell it to loosen up. If it writes something too long-winded, say, “Make this more concise.” If you need a more cheerful approach, you can ask, “Can you rewrite this from a more optimistic perspective?”
Refining ChatGPT’s output is the real power of the AI chatbot. Try having a back-and-forth, tweaking the response until it fits your needs. If you’re working on an important email, don’t just accept the first draft. Instead, ask ChatGPT to make it friendlier, then ask to make it more persuasive, and then shorten it. Before you know it, you’ll have an email that makes you sound like an absolute pro.
Get weird
Most people tend to use ChatGPT in predictable ways. They ask the AI to summarize things, answer questions, draft emails, and do other dull tasks. But if you want to see what ChatGPT can do, you need to push the boundaries.
Instead of just asking it to explain a complex concept, tell it to do it in the form of a Shakespearean sonnet or a rap battle between Newton and Einstein. Instead of asking for a meal plan, tell it, “Create a week’s worth of meals for someone who eats like a medieval knight but needs to lower their cholesterol.”
Weird prompts lead to creative, unexpected, and often brilliant results. If you’re brainstorming for a project, don’t just ask for ideas. Combine the specificity and role suggestions above and tell the AI to think like a rebellious 1980s ad executive, a minimalist Zen master, or a time traveler from 2090. You’ll get answers you might never have come up with on your own.
Learn from the AI
Most people use ChatGPT to do things for them, but the AI chatbot can have a longer-lasting impact on your life by teaching you how to learn better. The trick is treating ChatGPT like a coach, not just a tool.
If you’re learning to code, don’t just ask it to fix your errors; have it walk you through what went wrong and how to avoid it next time. ChatGPT can converse casually in several widely spoken tongues and correct you in real time if you want to learn to speak a new language. And if you need to be better at job interviews, you can practice to your heart’s content with ChatGPT and get it to vary in interview style and difficulty. Thinking of ChatGPT as a personal tutor you can meet with at any time, and that doesn’t judge you open up a lot of possibilities for self-improvement.
With 400 million people using ChatGPT every week, the AI chatbot is quickly becoming part of everyday life. That doesn’t mean all those millions are taking advantage of ChatGPT’s full abilities. The difference between a dabble and an expert in ChatGPT is how much someone pushes the AI chatbot beyond its most basic functions. So, get weird and specific. Combine ideas and act out scenarios with the AI chatbot. Remember, it will never outdo you at being human, but it could be the teacher and assistant supporting your goals in ways you’ve never imagined.
