President Donald Trump said in a post on social media Sunday that Dan Bongino, a conservative talk show host, will be deputy director of the FBI.
Bongino will join Kash Patel, who was recently confirmed by the Senate as director of the FBI. Trump said Bongino was named to the role by Patel. The position does not require Senate confirmation.
“Great news for Law Enforcement and American Justice!” Trump posted on his social media network, Truth Social, calling Bongino “a man of incredible love and passion for our Country.”
Bongino was previously a New York City police offer, and a member of the U.S. Secret Service. He most recently had been known as a conservative radio host and podcaster.
Trump said in his post that Bongino is “prepared to give up” his program as he steps into the new role. “The Dan Bongino Show” was most recently the 56th-ranked podcast in the United States, according to Spotify.

Oort cloud resembles a galaxy, new study finds
Oort cloud resembles a galaxy, new study finds
Feb. 23 (UPI) — A shell of icy objects at the edge of the solar system known as the Oort cloud has a pair of spiral arms that resemble a miniature galaxy, new research suggests.
Until now, the shape of the cloud and how it is affected by forces beyond our solar system have not been largely understood. But the new research, published Feb. 16 at arXiv, says the cloud may look like a spiral disk, one of the key characteristics necessary to be called an independent galaxy. The work has not yet been peer-reviewed.
The Oort cloud was born out of remnants of the solar system’s giant planets, Jupiter, Neptune, Uranus and Saturn, after they formed 4.6 billion years ago. Some of the remnants are so large that some scientists consider them dwarf planets.
The Oort cloud’s inner edge sits as far as 5,000 astronomical units from the sun, and its outer edge is as far as 100,000 AU away. One AU is 93 million miles, the average distance from Earth to the sun. So, depending on the actual distance, NASA‘s Voyager 1 spacecraft, which is traveling a million miles a day, won’t reach the edge of the Oort cloud for 300 years and won’t exit it for another 300,000.
The bodies in the cloud are so small and faint when measured with Earth-based technology, the researchers who did the new study used data gathered from the orbits of comets and gravitational forces from within and beyond our solar system to create a model of the Oort cloud’s structure. They are trying to better understand the makeup and origins of the Oort cloud because it could shed some light on the history of our solar system’s formation.

Hosts Argentina too good for Kookaburras, Hockeyroos
Hosts Argentina too good for Kookaburras, Hockeyroos
Argentina have condemned Australia to FIH Pro League misery after defeating the Kookaburras and the Hockeyroos in Santiago del Estero.
The *********** men’s hockey team could not replicate their earlier blistering form against the Argentinians, losing 1-0 on Monday (AEDT).
The Hockeyroos then coughed up an early lead to fall 2-1 to Argentina’s women.
Mark Hager’s men had surged to a dominant 2-0 win over Argentina to start the Santiago del Estero leg last week, before suffering an agonising 4-3 penalty shootout loss to Belgium after drawing 2-2.
Australia enjoyed a rest day before their Argentina rematch, but coach Hager admitted at halftime the break had only made his team slow to the ball.
Unable to break the deadlock against a tactically sound opposition in the opening half, Jack Welch sent Australia’s best shot at goal wide in the third quarter.
The visitors were made to pay for their wastefulness just seconds later, with Bautista Capurro finding the matchwinner.
Maico Casella had sent the ball over an unwitting *********** defence into the circle, with Capurro clinical to cap off the passage.
The Kookaburras earned a penalty corner with 10 seconds remaining, but they fluffed their opportunity to equalise.
Argentina leapfrog Australia in the standings to sixth with their third win of the season.
“It was a tough game,” Kookaburras captain Anand Gupte said.
“They were a tough unit to crack defensively and they countered really fast. They found our gaps in defence.
“Credit where it’s due, they played really well but we’ll be looking to improve our basics.”
Later on Monday, the Hockeyroos got onto the front foot early with ***** Smith finding the back of the net five minutes into the first quarter.
But Agustina Gorzelany levelled less than a minute later before a Brisa Bruggesser goal launched Argentina ahead in the second term.
Australia withstood a flurry of attacks to stem the scoreboard bleeding in the second half, but they could not mount their own challenge.
Katrina Powell’s charges only took five shots at goal to ten, from 16 circle entries to 27.
The sixth-placed Hockeyroos are now on a four-game losing streak, dating back to their 3-1 loss to China in Sydney.
Australia will return to the pitch on Tuesday morning (AEDT) for their final matches in Argentina, with the Kookaburras up first against Belgium.

Scientists Turned the James Webb to Examine ****** Hole at Center of Our Galaxy and Saw Something Wild
Scientists Turned the James Webb to Examine ****** Hole at Center of Our Galaxy and Saw Something Wild
The James Webb Space Telescope has peered 13 billion years in the past and tens of billions of light-years away from our planet.
And in a recent experiment, scientists decided to look deep into a ****** hole that’s way closer to home — where they were met with an explosive light show.
As CNN reports, scientists at Northwestern University turned the groundbreaking space telescope onto Sagittarius A*, the central ****** hole at the heart of our Milky Way Galaxy that’s about 26,000 light-years away from Earth, to see what its sensitive instruments would pick up.
In the most detailed look at that ****** hole ever undertaken, the astrophysicists observed incredible flares of light spewing out of Sagittarius A* that CNN described as resembling pyrotechnics.
As the researchers explained in a new paper published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, these types of flares usually burst out of accretion disks, or swirling disks of hot gas and dust. Though they’re not completely sure of its origin, the scientists behind this discovery say they think it came from an accretion disk located just beyond the ****** hole’s event horizon — a region with gravity so dense that even light can’t escape.
“In our data, we saw constantly changing, bubbling brightness,” Farhad Yusef-Zadeh, a physics and astronomy professor at Northwestern who was the study’s lead author, told CNN. “And then *****! A big burst of brightness suddenly popped up. Then, it calmed down again.”
As Yusef-Zadeh acknowledges, these fantastic flares appear to be happening at random.
“We couldn’t find a pattern in this activity,” he said. “The activity profile of this ****** hole was new and exciting every time that we looked at it.”
Though they’re effectively invisible, astronomers are able to “see” ****** holes because of their effect on the things around them. Anything that wanders too close to one gets sucked into its gravitational pull. Any dust and gas that gets pulled in starts to swirl super-fast in that maelstrom, forming accretion disks that heat up as they “feed” the ****** hole.
While the mechanism that fuels ****** holes is pretty well understood, astrophysicists don’t know exactly why these galaxy-powering bodies emit these bright, energetic flares. According to Yusef-Zadeh, the flares witnessed in Sagittarius A* are singular even for such mysterious motions.
“Flares are expected to happen in essentially all supermassive ****** holes, but our ****** hole is unique,” he explained. “It is always bubbling with activity and never seems to reach a steady state.”
Over a ******* of a year, the researchers watched Saggitarius A* in eight-to-ten-hour increments. During that time, as Yusef-Zadeh explained, “we noticed changes in every observation.”
“We saw something different each time,” the scientist told CNN, “which is really remarkable.”

Ex-Secret Service agent and conservative media personality Dan Bongino picked as FBI deputy director
Ex-Secret Service agent and conservative media personality Dan Bongino picked as FBI deputy director
WASHINGTON (AP) — Dan Bongino, a former U.S. Secret Service agent who has penned best-selling books, ran unsuccessfully for office and gained fame as a conservative pundit with TV shows and a popular podcast, has been chosen to serve as FBI deputy director.
President Donald Trump announced the appointment Sunday night in a post on his Truth Social platform, praising Bongino as “a man of incredible love and passion for our Country.” He called the announcement “great news for Law Enforcement and American Justice.”
The selection places two staunch Trump allies atop the nation’s premier federal law enforcement agency at a time when Democrats are concerned that the president could seek to target his adversaries. Bongino would serve under Kash Patel, who was sworn in as FBI director at the White House on Friday and who has signaled his intent to reshape the bureau, including by relocating hundreds of employees from its Washington headquarters and placing greater emphasis on the FBI’s traditional crime-fighting duties.

The deputy director serves as the FBI’s second-in-command and is traditionally a career agent responsible for the bureau’s day-to-day law enforcement operations.
Bongino, 49, served on the presidential details for then-Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, before becoming a popular right-wing figure. He became one of the leading personalities in the Make America Great Again political movement to spread false information about the 2020 election.
For a few years following Rush Limbaugh’s death in 2021, he was chosen for a radio show on the same time slot of the famous commentator.
Bongino worked for the New York Police Department from 1997 through 1999, before joining the Secret Service. He began doing commentary on Fox News more than a decade ago, and had a Saturday night show with the network from 2021 to 2023. He is now a host of The Dan Bongino Show, one of the most popular podcasts, according to Spotify.
Bongino ran for a U.S. Senate seat in Maryland in 2012 and for congressional seats in 2014 and 2016 in Maryland and Florida, after moving in 2015. He lost the three races.
During an interview last fall, Bongino asked Trump to commit to forming a commission to reform the Secret Service, calling it a “failed” agency and criticizing it for the two assassination attempts last year.
“That guy should have been nowhere near you,” Bongino said about the man who authorities say camped outside Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, before he was spotted with a rifle.
During the same interview, Trump praised the Secret Service agent who saw the rifle’s barrel coming out of a bush.

Wary Waratahs to stick to game plan against the Drua
Wary Waratahs to stick to game plan against the Drua
Defence is the buzz word as the NSW Waratahs look to avoid being seduced into a game of razzle dazzle rugby against the flamboyant Fijian Drua.
The Waratahs return to action on Friday night after a second-round bye intent on not falling into the trap of trying to match the all-out attacking style of the free-wheeling Pacific Islanders.
Both the Brumbies and Hurricanes have needed to score in excess of 30 points to defeat the Drua in the opening two rounds and the Waratahs are wary of getting caught up in a try-scoring **** for tat at Allianz Stadium.
“You need to make sure you’ve got your error count nice and low,” Tahs coach Dan McKellar said on Monday.
“Make sure you tackle well or they’ll hurt you off turnover attack. They’re very dangerous.
“We all know how Fiji play – they offload and are very good on transition, so we need to be need to be clinical.
“We’re going to make errors. There’s no doubt. We just need to shut them down quickly.”
It’s not just the Drua piling on points this season.
An average of 75 points were scored across the five games at the weekend after the Waratahs escaped with a 37-36 high-scoring thriller in round one against the Highlanders.
The try-scoring extravaganza has been exciting for fans but McKellar is warning his side not to try to beat the Fijians at their own game in Sydney.
“We won’t go out there and try and play like Fiji,” he said.
“I think we’d get ell beaten if that was the case. We’ll play our game.
“We’ve got improvement to make around our D zone defence, but Super Rugby’s always tended to have that at the beginning of the season.
“Defences are sort of working out their system and getting on the same page.
“But for me it’s been just quality attack (from all teams). In that respect, having the bye straight after was beneficial because that was good to get a couple of days away and review some some harsh learnings, but pleasingly off the back of a win.
“Being far from perfect and still winning your first game, that’s a good sign for us.”
Despite losing their opening two matches, the Drua still harbour hopes of winning the title in just their fourth season in the competition.
McKellar reckons they’ve been a fabulous addition.
“They just love the game,” he said.
“The Fijian people love the game. Teams that go up there get big crowds, they’re incredibly welcoming and respectful.
“But when the boys get on the field, it’s 80 minutes of hard work against quality rugby players.
“They’ve been great for the competition, the Drua, and it’s obviously having a massive impact on them on the international stage.
“They’ve got a world-class training facility up there now that allows them to prepare at the right level and they’re a dangerous outfit.”

Dividend stocks have played a key role in overall market returns in the past. Data shows that from March 1994 through March 2024, dividends and dividend reinvestment accounted for about 47% of the total return of the S&P 500.
Last May, someone asked dividend investors on Reddit to share their monthly dividend income goals. The question drew strong engagement and many investors shared their detailed income reports, but one comment stood out.
An investor said he collected about $20,000 a month in dividend income and aimed to take this to $30,000 a month.
Don’t Miss:
“Goal is $30k/mo min, since that’s going to be roughly $20k/mo after taxes. $22k last month, $20k this month. Portfolio is just shy of $600k and has a total gain over the last year of about $25k,” he said.
However, the investor’s portfolio had several risky covered call dividend ETFs. He said in a comment that he was aware of the risks involved. He also mentioned that he had no Roth or tax-deferred accounts and had retired early.
“I think of this a different way. If it all goes to zero, I’ll still be OK. I’m simply taking a chance on leveling up my life. Most folks don’t have that kind of money. That doesn’t mean that I’m right or wrong, or that the more mainstream folks are right or wrong. I simply believe the reward is worth the risk.”

Cruise ship lawyer warns of ‘absolutely horrifying’ inspection report on Royal Caribbean: ‘Disney would never’
Cruise ship lawyer warns of ‘absolutely horrifying’ inspection report on Royal Caribbean: ‘Disney would never’
A sinking ship.
A lawyer who says he “sues cruise lines for a living” called out Royal Caribbean following the “absolutely horrifying” results of an inspection done by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
Spencer Aronfeld, known on TikTok as @cruiseshiplawyer, made a video last week where he described what went wrong when the CDC inspected a Royal Caribbean Symphony of the Seas ship.
Spencer Aronfeld. cruiseshiplawyer/TikTok
Aronfeld said the biggest issue was that raw eggs and raw hamburgers were being stored at the incorrect refrigeration temperature on the boat.
Furthermore, crew members at Johnny Rockets allegedly had open wounds and were touching ice with their bare hands.
The CDC report about the cruise ship. cruiseshiplawyer/TikTok
In addition, “several children came down with severe GI problems while in their daycare centers, and the daycare center failed to follow the protocols for referring them to the medical center and for reporting these things as acte gastrointestinal illnesses, projectile diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps to the CDC,” said Aronfeld.
That misstep by the cruise line, according to Aronfeld, allowed “these poor kids to spread a potential norovirus to their parents and other passengers on the ship.”
Aronfeld revealed that the CDC scored the ship an 86 in the inspection report — which he claimed was “barely satisfactory.”

“One point less, which is an 85, would have been an unsatisfactory evaluation, which probably would have caused them to have to cancel the cruise,” the legal expert shared. “Quite frankly, I think they should have.”
Aronfeld also said it will cost Royal Caribbean around $65,000 to correct these issues in the allowed short timespan.
In a follow-up video, Aronfeld said that as of Friday, Feb. 21, Royal Caribbean has not issued a corrective report which they have to do to fix the problems outlined by the CDC.
“Which lends me to believe they haven’t fixed it,” said Aronfeld. “Which means that these problems are still existing.”
“The ship is sailing, and it’s got passengers on board right now, but I sure hope that Royal Caribbean has done at least enough to correct these issues, but they should have at least reported it to the CDC,” he added.
Aronfeld’s followers responded to his videos exposing Royal Caribbean in the comments.

“Disney Cruise Line would NEVER,” one person wrote.
“Did he say Symphony of Disease,” another person joked.
A third TikToker said, “Cruises are disgusting….? Is this surprising?”
“I’m disappointed in RC, I expected more from this cruise line,” another comment read, to which Aronfeld responded, “Me too!”
Someone else called on the CDC to “inspect every single ship docked in the US nonstop.”

Aussie shares flat as Wisetech Global plunges 22pct
Aussie shares flat as Wisetech Global plunges 22pct
The local share market has been struggling to keep its head above water, with losses by the bourse’s biggest tech company and its major miners balanced by a bounce-back by the big banks.
At lunchtime on Monday the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index down 7.4 points, or 0.09 per cent, to 8,288.8, while the broader All Ordinaries was down 29.1 points, or 0.034 per cent, to 8,541.8.
The ASX200 had been down by as much as 79.9 points, or 0.9 per cent, in early trading but by midday it was hovering in and out of positive territory.
A finish in the red would extend its losing streak to six days – its longest streak since a seven-session stretch in June 2022.
In the technology sector, Wisetech Global plunged 22.7 per cent to a six-month low of $94.14 following more turmoil at the cloud logistics platform.
Wisetech said four of its independent board members were stepping down, following “intractable differences” with the ongoing role of founder Richard White.
The company also announced that its revenue would be at the bottom end of its guidance, due to further delays to three “breakthrough” product launches.
Overall the tech sector had dropped 7.5 per cent, also weighed down by IRESS and Nuix. The former had sunk 16.2 per cent after posting its full-year results, while the latter was down 9.2 per cent on its half-year financials.
In the utility sector, APA Group climbed 7.3 per cent on the back of its half-year results.
The pipeline operator said it had grown its underlying earnings by 9.1 per cent, driven in part by strong contributions by its Pilbara business.
In the financial sector, all of the big four banks were in the green after last week’s sharp selloff.
ANZ was up 2.1 per cent, NAB had climbed 1.7 per cent, Westpac had gained 1.0 per cent and CBA had advanced 1.8 per cent.
In materials, all of the big mining giants were lower. BHP had dropped 1.4 per cent, Rio Tinto had fallen 2.3 per cent and Fortescue was down 0.2 per cent.
Perenti Limited was down 14.0 per cent after the mining services firm announced an underlying half-year profit of $81.7 million, up four per cent from a year ago.
In industrials, Reece Limited had fallen 11.4 per cent after the plumbing products company said its sales were down three per cent to $4.4 billion in in the six months to December 31.
“Our performance for the first half reflects the challenging trading environment in both regions (ANZ and the US) as mortgage rates and affordability continue to create near term headwinds in our sector,” said chairman and CEO Peter Wilson.
In currency, the *********** dollar was buying 63.88 US cents, from 63.95 US cents at 5pm AEDT on Friday.

Florida sheriff puts seven cops on leave after bungled domestic violence response ends in triple *********: ‘P*** poor’
Florida sheriff puts seven cops on leave after bungled domestic violence response ends in triple *********: ‘P*** poor’
Seven Florida cops have been placed on leave after their sheriff said their handling of a domestic violence case was “p*** poor.”
Mary Gingles, her father David Ponzer and her neighbor Andrew Ferrin were all shot dead earlier this month, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office said, while Mary’s four-year-old daughter was kidnapped. Now, Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony said seven officers “fell short on” the case after receiving multiple calls from Mary, who told them her husband was taking “steps” to ******* her and was waiting “for the opportune time.”
“We fell short on this one response in terms of how some of the patrol personnel had documented certain facts related to calls going back to December,” Tony told reporters at a Wednesday press conference.
“Basically, we had a chance to save your loved one’s life and we failed,” Tony added.

Now, Mary’s husband Nathan Gingles has been arrested on several charges, including *******, kidnapping and child abuse.
On February 16, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office responded to shooting reports in Tamarac. There, they found Mary Gingles’s father David Ponzer, 64, dead from a gunshot wound on her back patio.
Then, while searching a Ferrin’s neighboring home, police also found him and Mary had been fatally shot.
Investigators believe Mary ran to Ferrin’s home to escape the attack, but Nathan followed her there. Ferrin was an “innocent and unsuspecting resident,” according to court documents reviewed by NBC News.
Police also discovered Mary’s four-year-old daughter Seraphine Gingles had been taken from the home by Nathan. Police issued a statewide Amber Alert and found her just hours later “safe and unharmed” in Nathan’s car.
The four-year-old then told investigators her father shot her mother “a hundred” times, NBC News reports.
Mary filed her first domestic violence injunction against Nathan a year ago — while seeking a divorce — before filing a second one in December, NBC News reports.
“With Nathan’s violent history, his flagrant disregard for rules or laws, and his telling our daughter that he is going to kill me, I am fearful for my life…” Mary wrote in the December court petition, reviewed by the Miami Herald. “He has already taken steps to prepare to ******* me, but is waiting for the opportune time.”

She also made at least two calls about domestic violence, with the first one coming in October.
“It’s clear that we probably could have done more in that element and that’s what we’re looking at,” Tony said of the October call.
Mary made the second call in December, telling the responding deputy she was afraid Nathan would kill her.
Tony said deputies could have pursued arresting Nathan after that — but did not.
“This is just a matter of what I’ve seen of p***-poor performance, complacency, and people not doing their due diligence,” Tony said. He branded it: “bull**** work.”
The seven officers on leave are: Michael Paparella; Travis Allen; Devoune Williams; Ilany Ceballos; Brittney King; Joseph Sasso; and Daniel Munoz.
The Independent was unable to identify Nathan Gingles’s attorney for comment.

Why are people protesting against India’s ambitious water project
Why are people protesting against India’s ambitious water project

Protesters say the project will destory their homes and livlihoods
Thousands of villagers in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh are protesting against a multi-million-dollar river-linking project which, they say, will rob them of their homes and livelihoods.
The Ken-Betwa project, with a budget of 440bn rupees ($5.06bn; £4.05bn), will channel excess water from the Ken river in Madhya Pradesh to the Betwa river in the neighbouring Uttar Pradesh state through a network of tunnels, canals and a dam.
It is the first of 16 such river-linking projects earmarked under India’s National Perspective Plan for water resource development in the 1980s. The plan faced multiple delays – mainly due to environmental concerns and political disputes – before the government cleared it in 2021.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for its construction in December last year.
The project is supposed to help the drought-prone Bundelkhand region – which includes parts of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh – where arid climate and unpredictable rainfall patterns have led to decades of poverty and underdevelopment.
The government says that once completed in 2030, it will help irrigate 1.06 million hectares of land, provide drinking water to 6.2 million people and generate 130MW of hydropower and solar energy.
But at least 10 villages, including vast swathes of precious forest land, will be submerged to build the dam’s reservoir and 11 more villages will be displaced for constructing the canal, affecting more than 7,000 families, district officials say.
“Our livelihoods are tied to this land – we don’t know what the future holds for us anymore,” said Tulsi Adivasi, who is among the thousands of villagers protesting against the project.
Most of them belong to the indigenous Gond and Kol tribes, who live along the edge of forests and depend on farming for a living.
At least 21 villages, mostly inhabited by tribespeople, will be submerged by the project
Environmental experts warn the project will submerge nearly 98 sq km (38 sq miles) of the Panna Tiger Reserve, a 543 sq km sanctuary that successfully brought tigers back from local extinction in 2009.
This could undo years of conservation efforts. “It’s unprecedented. We have never seen a core area of a national park being used for such a large-scale infrastructure project before,” says environmentalist Amit Bhatnagar.
In 2019, a panel of experts constituted by India’s top court had also raised concerns about the project, questioning its economic viability and impact on the region’s wildlife. The government, it said, should explore alternative irrigation methods in the river basin.
Independent studies on river-linking projects in India have made similar observations.
A 2023 study published in the Nature Communications journal states that such endeavours “may worsen the water stress across the country, making these projects ineffective or possibly even counterproductive”.
Baleshwar Thakur, who heads the National Water Development Agency, however, defended the project, saying authorities had conducted a thorough research and acquired all environmental clearances for the project.
“We have also designated additional land to offset the loss of tiger habitats and will rehabilitate other species affected by the project as well,” he said.
The government official admitted that there would be a potential “challenge” to the biodiversity of the region, but said that “the benefits of the project outweigh the adverse impacts”.
Thousands of villagers have been protesting against the project since December
The assurances have done little to comfort the villagers.
In the heart of Daudhan, 48-year-old Mahesh Adivasi sat with a group of men, who voiced their dissent in the form of a protest song.
“Ken-Betwa dam is built by the government, it gives others water but drowns us,” they sang, the lyrics capturing their anguish.
The village is one of the poorest areas in the region, lacking basic facilities such as clean drinking water and electricity.
The bitter irony of the river project isn’t lost on its people – they ask why they are being asked to abandon their homes to provide electricity in 13 other districts when their own village has never had power.
“We have seen generations pass without progress. Now, we are being asked to sacrifice our lives for others’ progress. What about us?” Mahesh Adivasi said.
The government has offered villagers an optional compensation plan, where they can either opt for a piece of land along with 750,000 rupees ($8,655; £6,842) or a one-time payout of 1,250,000 rupees. For those who own land, an additional amount based on the land’s value will also be given.
Anxious locals say they live in perpetual uncertainity about when they’d be asked to relocate
Mr Thakur said that about 90% of the people had chosen to take the lump sum amount. “In the meantime, the government has started looking for alternative government land to resettle the villagers,” he added.
But locals say the amount being offered is insufficient. Tulsi Adivasi showed BBC Hindi a government notice which evaluated his house at 46,000 rupees.
“Can a house be built with this much money?” he asked.
Others complain they have not been informed when they must evacuate or where they’d be resettled, fuelling anxieties about their future.
“The project should have been a blessing for our village but, the truth is, it will plunge us further into darkness,” said Lakshmi Adivasi, 20.
Questions have also been raised against the claim that the project is meant to channel excess water from the Ken river.
Critics point out that the government has relied on outdated data from 2003, without independent verification, to calculate the river’s annual yield.
Mr Thakur denied the allegation and said authorities “have all the data to continue with the project”.
Mr Bhatnagar, the environmentalist, said that by going ahead with the project, the government was setting “a dangerous precedent” for similar development programmes to be carried out in other geologically sensitive areas.
“And for those affected, it once again underscores how development in India often comes at the cost of the most marginalised,” he added.
