  1. Bill Maher tells former Obama speechwriter Dems ‘want to lose elections’ if they don’t budge on trans issues Bill Maher tells former Obama speechwriter Dems ‘want to lose elections’ if they don’t budge on trans issues “Real Time” host and comedian Bill Maher sparred with former Obama speechwriter Jon Lovett over the issue of Democrats supporting gender transition treatments for children. On the “Pod Saves America” podcast on Sunday, Maher called out the position as a woke “outlier” from not only Americans but the world as a whole, alienating them from average voters. “The Democratic position in [California] has been that the school has the right to hide it from the parents,” Maher said. “That is not something that’s going to go well with the average voter.” He later added, “And the fact that you think, or a lot of people on the left think, that even if you just have this debate, it makes you a bigot, you just have to roll over…that was their position. If you even question this, you’re some sort of a bigot. And this is new science. And it has to do with children. And it’s not going to look good in the future, that position.” Bill Maher criticized Democrats pushing transgender ideas onto children. Maher Calls Out ‘Woke Excess’ Of U.s. Medical Establishment: ‘Afraid’ To Back Down On Gender Care For Kids Lovett pushed back by comparing the situation to gay people being accused of “grooming” young boys, insisting that the treatments shouldn’t be discarded because a “few” may regret transitioning. Read On The Fox News App “But they’re also really important surgeries that people get for their heart. And they go wrong and somebody dies and nobody says, we must stop the cardiologists. No one says we must stop the surgeons,” Lovett continued. “That’s your analogy?” Maher interrupted incredulously. “We don’t get rid of the specific surgery,” Lovett continued as the two spoke over each other. “We don’t throw out a whole field of medicine. We say, let’s make sure we’re doing it in a way that’s healthy. The science, the research, alright, makes clear that, yes, there are exceptions. Yes, there are people practicing it in ways that maybe go too far, but for the most part, study after study shows that gender-affirming care saves a lot of lives.” Lovett also accused Republicans of taking “edge cases” like transgender athletes in girls’ locker rooms to try and make a “war” against all transgender people. Maher agreed but called out Lovett’s claim that “study after study” has shown the treatment’s benefits. Jon Lovett and Bill Maher went back on forth over the issue of defending children receiving gender transition treatments. He pointed to a report from 2024 that revealed that a study on the effects of puberty blockers on kids’ mental health went unpublished out of concern it would be “weaponized” by critics. “So in other words, it came out not the way you wanted the study to come out, not what you said, that ‘Oh, all the studies show that.’ No, it is a mixed bag,” Maher said. Lovett grew more heated as he argued there would be some times when parents must be left out of the decision on gender transition treatments. Click Here For More Coverage Of Media And Culture “Look, we all believe that parents should have the decisions over their children, but we also recognize that some parents do such a bad f—ing job that the kids are in danger,” Lovett said. “That happens in outside of trans issues. That happens all the time. It’s terrible. Some parents are f—ing terrible, but somehow that the fact that there are terrible parents in the world gets erased on these questions. Do I think that schools should, but as a baseline, be keeping a secret from parents? Of f—ing course not. No one thinks that. No one thinks that.” “Apparently that’s not true,” Maher interjected. “People do think that. And there is no perfect answer to this. It’s as many knotty questions, the least bad answer—” Maher argued there is no consensus on whether gender transition treatments help kids. “The least bad answer is to not have the government decide from above is just to leave it up to people and parents, then the kids and the doctors. Right? You want the government to ban gender affirming care for kids?” Lovett fired back. “You want to lose every election? Just keep coming down on the side of parents coming in second and a ‘who gets to decide what goes on with your kid’ contest,” Maher said. 4. My attackers kept an online tally of assaults My attackers kept an online tally of assaults BBC Solo traveller Annie Makeeva fought off two attackers while hiking in Vietnam When Annie Makeeva set out from London on a solo trip to Vietnam in December 2022, she never imagined she would be ********* assaulted by a pair of violent “incels” – men who blame women because they are unable to find a ******* partner. It happened on the first day of her holiday, after Annie had cycled 10km (six miles) into the remote Cat Tien National Park, in the south of the country. “I decided to cycle along the jungle track and then hike to Crocodile Lake which is their star attraction. I stopped at the end of the track and I saw two guys there – fellow tourists, I assumed.” But minutes later they followed her into the jungle and attacked her. ‘I was shouting but realised no-one could hear me’Annie Makeeva Annie went on a guided tour of the Cat Tien National Park on the morning of the day she was assaulted “As they walked past me the first man reached out and grabbed me. “He then said something in Vietnamese to his friend who was on the other side of me. And I looked to see if this friend was coming to my rescue, or was he also going to attack me. And it turns out, yes, he wanted to attack me as well. “They were both groping me. I shouted for help and realised no-one could hear me.” Annie, who is from west London, said she got “really scared” when the men began to restrain her and tried to push her down to the floor. She managed to break free and hide behind a tree. When one of the men again caught hold of her and looked back to his friend for a moment, she punched him hard on the back of the neck, disorientating him. Annie Makeeva Some of the bruises on Annie’s arm after she was grabbed and restrained One of the men who attacked Annie refers to himself as “Satan” and keeps a running tally of the women he has assaulted At this point Annie got out her phone to take a photograph of the men, and this prompted the other man to offer her money to keep quiet. When she wouldn’t take the money, the power balance shifted and the men began to back off. They made off the way they had come. Annie then had to decide whether to go in the same direction as the men to where she had left her bike, and cycle 10km back to the hotel, or try to go another 5km onwards to where she knew there would be a park ranger and potentially other tourists who might help her. She decided on the latter. Annie Makeeva The two men were detained by Vietnamese police BBC London has seen a photo of Annie’s bruised upper torso. She did not want this image to be used in this story. The men were eventually detained by police at the same hotel where Annie was staying. She says the police decided it was an opportunistic rather than planned attack and it is not clear what penalty, if any, they faced. Annie contacted the Foreign Office the next day. A spokesperson told the BBC: “We supported a British woman in Vietnam and were in contact with the local authorities.” Annie told BBC London that when she rechecked the Foreign Office’s advice for female travellers in Vietnam, the guidance had been updated from what it said before her visit. Annie Makeeva An Instagram post by one of the men, detailing an assault on another tourist in a busy market Annie Makeeva One of the attacker’s social media posts, in which he laments being unable to grope anyone as he has hurt his arm Struggling to come to terms with what had happened to her, Annie decided to try to find out whether the men had done this before. She had been encouraged to take a photo of the men’s confiscated ID cards at the hotel and when she returned to the *** she used this information to look up their social media accounts. What she found horrified her. “It’s full of violent imagery. It’s extremely misogynistic, it promotes violence against women, violence against western tourists specifically. “There are pictures of weapons, including handmade weapons, target practice. They describe women as ‘******’ and ‘livestock’. And they also keep a tally of women they have attacked. They boast about their attacks and they make fun of us. It’s really chilling.” ‘An echo chamber of violence against women’Annie Makeeva One of the men’s social media posts shows him posing with weapons and challenging the police to arrest him Annie Makeeva A post from one of the men depicting some of his weapons Annie Makeeva One of the men seemingly referred to the attack on Annie after posting a picture of this sign in Cat Tien National Park. This post has since been deleted One of the men’s social media accounts shows an image of a naked woman being beheaded and the words “the future of women”. Another is full of obscene videos of him masturbating to ************. “They’re incels. They’ve posted on their social media accounts explaining that they haven’t been able to find someone to date, someone to be intimate with. They have created this echo chamber of violence against women. “They made it very difficult for me to go back to my regular life. I stopped hiking. I didn’t like to leave my house at night or really any time,” says Annie, holding back tears. “I became hypervigilant and that is really exhausting. Can I cross the park to go to my yoga class? Who is behind me on the Tube? Can I even trust the colleague who gets in the lift with me?” Twelve attacks Annie, who works as a translator, says she wants to drive awareness of male violence towards women. “I also want to protect any women travelling to that area, any time soon.” She added: “There may be other women out there were attacked who don’t know by whom and why.” The attack has had a profound impact on Annie’s confidence The BBC has contacted the Vietnamese police and the men themselves, via their social media accounts, for comment. So far there has been no response. Annie is certain there are more victims – something that’s evident from the men’s social media activity. “In total there have been eight attacks against western tourists, three against local women and one against a ******** tourist,” says Annie. “I know that are there other victims out there. I feel extremely lucky in a way because the situation could have been a lot worse.” If you’ve been affected by any of the issues in this story you can find help and support via BBC Action Line here Listen to the best of BBC Radio London on Sounds and follow BBC London on Facebook, X and Instagram. 6. Israel sends tanks into West Bank for first time in decades, says fleeing Palestinians can’t return Israel sends tanks into West Bank for first time in decades, says fleeing Palestinians can’t return JENIN, West Bank (AP) — Israeli tanks moved into the occupied West Bank on Sunday for the first time in decades in what ************ authorities called a “dangerous escalation,” after the defense minister said troops will remain in parts of the territory for a year and tens of thousands of Palestinians who have fled cannot return. Associated Press journalists saw several tanks move along unpaved tracks into Jenin, long a bastion of armed struggle against Israel. Israel is deepening its crackdown on the ************ territory and has said it is determined to stamp out militancy amid a rise in attacks. It launched the offensive in the northern West Bank on Jan. 21 — two days after the current ceasefire in Gaza took hold — and expanded it to nearby areas. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. Palestinians view the deadly raids as part of an effort to cement Israeli control over the territory, where 3 million Palestinians live under military rule. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the military to “increase the intensity of the activity to thwart terrorism” in all refugee camps in the West Bank. “We will not allow the return of residents, and we will not allow terrorism to return and grow,” he said. Earlier, Katz said he had instructed the military to prepare for “an extended stay” in some of the West Bank’s urban refugee camps from which about 40,000 Palestinians have fled, leaving them “emptied of residents.” The camps are home to descendants of Palestinians who fled during wars with Israel decades ago. It was not clear how long Palestinians would be prevented from returning. Katz said Israeli troops would stay “for the coming year.” Netanyahu said they would stay “as long as needed.” Tanks were last deployed in the West Bank in 2002, when Israel fought a deadly ************ uprising. The ************ foreign ministry called the Israeli moves “a dangerous escalation of the situation in the West Bank,” and urged the international community to intervene in what it termed Israel’s ******** “aggression.” “Even if they stay, we will return to the camp at the end,” said Mohamed al-Sadi, one of those displaced from Jenin. “This camp is ours. We have no other place to go.” Netanyahu under pressure to crack down With fighting in Gaza and Lebanon on hold, Netanyahu has been under pressure from far-right governing partners to crack down on militancy in the West Bank. The U.N. says the current Israeli military operation is the longest since the ************ uprising of the early 2000s. Under interim peace agreements from the early 1990s, Israel maintains control over large parts of the West Bank, while the ************ Authority administers other areas. Israel regularly sends troops into ************ zones but typically withdraws them after missions. More than 800 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since the war in Gaza erupted on Oct. 7, 2023, with a ****** attack on southern Israel. Israel says most were militants, but stone-throwing youths protesting Israeli raids as well as bystanders have also been killed. In the most recent operation, a pregnant ************ woman was killed. Jewish settlers also have carried out rampages in ************ areas in the territory. And there has been a spike in ************ attacks emanating from the West Bank. On Thursday, blasts rocked three empty buses in Israel in what police view as a suspected militant attack. Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem in the 1967 ******** war. Palestinians want all three territories for their future independent state. U.S. envoy to pursue extended ceasefire The truce between Israel and ****** in Gaza remains tenuous. A week is left in the ceasefire’s first phase, and no negotiations have been reported on the second phase. The truce’s collapse could lead to renewed fighting in Gaza, where Netanyahu says 63 hostages remain, about half of them believed dead, including a soldier captured in 2014. “We are ready to return to intense fighting at any moment,” Netanyahu said Sunday. The military increased its “operational readiness” around Gaza. The U.S. special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, told CNN he expects the second phase to go forward, adding: “We have to get an extension of phase one and so I’ll be going into the region this week, probably Wednesday, to negotiate that.” He told CBS he will visit Qatar, Egypt, Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. But a senior ****** leader, Mahmoud Mardawi, said Sunday the group will not engage in further discussions with Israel through mediators until Israel releases the 620 ************ prisoners meant to be freed on Saturday. Israel said early Sunday it was delaying the release until it gets assurances that ****** stops what Israel calls “humiliating” handovers of hostages in staged ceremonies criticized by the U.S. and Red Cross as cruel. Egypt and Qatar were pressing Israel to release the prisoners, and Egypt refused to discuss any Israeli demands before then, said an Egyptian official involved in the talks who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to talk to the media. ************ family members were distraught. “What have the prisoners done? We don’t know what happened. They killed our joy,” said one mother, Najah Zaqqot. The White House is supporting Israel’s decision to delay releasing the Palestinians prisoners, calling it “appropriate.” National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes said Sunday that, “given ******’ barbaric treatment of the hostages, including the hideous parade of the Bibas children’s coffins through the streets of Gaza, Israel’s decision to delay the release of prisoners is an appropriate response.” “The President is prepared to support Israel in whatever course of action it chooses regarding ******,” Hughes said in a statement. Meanwhile, Netanyahu faced new criticism over the war while speaking at a military graduation. As he held up a picture of Shiri Bibas and her young boys, Ariel and Kfir, whose remains were returned from Gaza last week, to demonstrate “what we are fighting against,” audience members called out “Shame!” and “Why didn’t you save them?” The prime minister didn’t react. ___ Goldenberg reported from Tel Aviv, Israel. 8. GEORGIE PARKER: Blueprint to bring AFL state of origin back so it’s not just Victoria against the rest GEORGIE PARKER: Blueprint to bring AFL state of origin back so it’s not just Victoria against the rest Gillon McLachlan’s legacy was the introduction of the AFLW and steering the AFL successfully through the COVID years. Andrew Demetirou’s was expanding the league and bringing footy back to the Adelaide Oval. Along with bringing in the Tasmanian team, could reviving state of origin be Andrew Dillon’s legacy? I’ve always loved state of origin. I’m of an age that I caught the tailend of it as a kid, but it’s my parents who made me realise how big it was. Maybe it’s the nostalgia talking, but they speak with such passion about the sold-out crowds and the on-field player rivalries. I can still see the distaste to Leigh Matthews in my mother’s eyes for apparently “ruining Barrie Robran’s career” during a state match in the 1970’s. You just need to look at the NRL to see how strong the culture of state of origin is in rugby league – it rivals the grand final as the sport’s pinnacle event each year. The AFL is now a national sport – much more than the NRL – and this is why it’s so complicated for us. The Victoria against the Allies concept didn’t work. As a non-Victorian sure it gave us all the common bond of wanting Victoria to lose, but it didn’t give me the pride compared to seeing the blue, red and yellow like if it were an SA team and I’m sure it didn’t feel the same to a sandgroper not seeing a ****** swan on a yellow jumper. So, is there a way we can include the whole country in this concept? Without it being a carnival involving several states, I don’t know how it could. Camera IconWestern Australia V Victoria in 1979. Credit: The West ***********/The West *********** We don’t have space in the calendar and we don’t have much of the buy in as rugby league to play more than one match a year. I believe for state of origin to work there can only be three teams – Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. NSW and Queensland, although starting to become footy factories in their own way, don’t have the history to be part of this, and Tasmania, while some of the greats hail from there, just don’t have the number of players with only 24 AFL players from Tasmania currently on an AFL list. It can only be a one-off game, it has to be in the season and there needs to be financial incentives for both the players and the clubs for it be ticked off. My idea, one team in, one team out each year. You win you stay in, you lose, you don’t get to play the next year. Make the match mean something and make the guernsey your wearing hard to get a hold of. We want players proud to be part of playing something so at the end of their career, playing in x amount of state of origins sits high on their list of achievements, just like in the NRL. There’s plenty of theories of where it when it should be played, many say move the pre-finals bye to after the preliminary final and play it then, but then you’d be missing the best players from the grand final. For me though, if you make winning a state of origin on par with a premiership, it would be something worth risking getting injured for, so you could then play it during the season or even as part of the pre-season as Dillon has indicated in place of the Indigenous All Stars on a rotating ***-annual basis possibly. The concept would need the entire buy in from league, players and fans. The only problem I have with bringing state of origin back is that unfortunately, I think the Victorian team would wipe every other state without blinking, and growing up a South *********** and living in Western Australia for 10 years, there’s nothing worse than seeing Victoria win. 9. San Diego seeks over $50K from organizers of unpermitted float event San Diego seeks over $50K from organizers of unpermitted float event SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The City of San Diego is working to stop all unpermitted events that officials say can create potentially life-threatening circumstances. One of their main focuses is an ******** float festival that is held every summer on Mission Bay. FOX5/KUSI obtained a copy of a letter officials dated Feb. 5, 2025, that was sent to two people they have identified as the event’s organizers, telling them they owe the city more than $54,000. The letter was also accompanied by an invoice. Both items had the organizers’ names redacted. The letter notes that the organizers are responsible for all city costs incurred for personnel and equipment for a public safety response related to the event last July, which was unpermitted. That includes the cost of two dozen lifeguard rescues. Easily apply for a passport at these spring popup events in San Diego A spokesperson for the city said they worked with the organizers in 2023 and 2024 to educate them on special event permit processes and requirements. “You got alcohol in the water, you’ve got some vessels that are under power, you have people who just are on floats,” said Lt. Rick Romero, Lifeguard Lt. San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. This combination, according to Romero, can be dangerous — and every summer, people flock to the sail the Mission Bay area for it. “It gets pretty well publicized on social media and it’s the thing to do,” he continued. Romero says when a few hundred people show up to an unpermitted event, it impacts their normal operations. “We’ve in the past have had to rescue people from just floating away or they’re not able to go back into shore or they fall off from being intoxicated,” he explained. Councilmember Jennifer Campbell, whose District 2 covers Mission Bay, sent FOX 5/KUSI a statement that reads: “Public safety is my top priority and I am grateful to the police officers, lifeguards and park rangers who conducted the rescues that took place. However, it is concerning that the organizers chose to move forward with this event despite not having the proper permits and being warned that they would be fined for the use of any city personnel that would be needed for rescue operations. Actions have consequences and the organizers must now adhere to the repercussions of their irresponsible decision.” In her years living in the area, Susan Rezner says the event has changed. “They stopped being quite so exciting,” she explained. “People started realizing they were getting ticketed.” Just down the way, local resident Terry Keefer said, “I think they should have a permit because when there’s a lot of people, somebody has to be somehow responsible.” The city says it has not been approached about a future “Festival of Floats” event at this time. As for the organizers, they have until March 10 to pay the more than $54,000, or risk being sent to collections and be subject to additional fees. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Saturday Lotto: West *********** wins biggest lotto prize in draw so far this year Saturday Lotto: West *********** wins biggest lotto prize in draw so far this year A lucky WA Lotto player turned their ticket into $3.3 million when they scooped up a division one prize on Saturday. The WA player purchased the golden ticket from Forest Lakes Newsagency in Thornlie — most likely not expecting that purchase to make them an instant multi-millionaire. The huge win is the largest prize a WA player has won in a Saturday draw so far this year. West Aussie wins continued into division two with 13 players taking home around $11,500 each. Lotterywest spokesperson James Mooney said WA has been on a roll the past week. “They say good things come in threes, which I’m sure the owner of this $3.3 million ticket will agree with,” he said. “It would be great to see this win turn into a trio of wins for WA following Tuesday’s $15 million OZ Lotto draw and Thursday’s $30 million Powerball draw.” The winning numbers in draw #4549 were 2, 5, 26, 28, 31, 39 and supplementary numbers were 7, 8. 15. James Carville Makes Bold Prediction About When Trump’s White House Will ‘Collapse’ James Carville Makes Bold Prediction About When Trump’s White House Will ‘Collapse’ James Carville predicted that President Donald Trump’s White House team will “collapse” in less than a month. The famed Democratic Party strategist claimed that the downfall will hit as the president’s approval numbers continue to crater. Trump has implemented a multitude of executive orders and fired thousands of government officials all within his first month in office—moves that risk sending the economy into a tailspin. He advised Democrats to simply sit back and watch it happen. “Democrats need to play possum,” Carville told Mediaite’s Dan Abrams this week. “This whole thing is collapsing.” He gave the administration “less than 30 days” before public opinion completely caves in. “We’re in the midst of a collapse. This is the lowest approval—not even close—that any president has ever had at a comparable time,” Carville said. “It’s going to be easy pickings here in six weeks. Just lay back.” On Saturday, Trump attacked Carville after the strategist got testy with Sean Hannity on Fox News, questioning the network’s facts when it came to the president’s popularity. “I’m reading these polls saying the Democrats are 13 points up in the congressional generic, that Donald Trump has the lowest approval rating of any president at this point in his presidency in American history,” Carville said on Hannity’s show. “So, your viewers are getting one view. And I’m reading another view. One of us is right and one of us is wrong. It’s that simple. Have they got fact checkers at Fox?” Trump pushed back on the claims, taking to Truth Social to say he has the “best polling numbers” he’s ever had. “The Democrats, run by broken down losers like James Carville, whose weak of mind and body, are going crazy, and just don’t know what to do,” he posted. “They have lost their confidence and spirit – They have lost their minds!” Carville told Abrams that the debt extension will cause Republicans to reach across the aisle. “I think the house Democrats—and this is going to shock a lot of people—I think they know exactly what they’re doing and they know exactly what’s going to happen.” Many Democrats have been upset with the elected party’s defenses against Trump’s administration since his inauguration. Earlier this month, it was reported that the Senate was receiving 1,600 calls a minute over Trump’s first moves in office. Democrats in particular were receiving a high volume of complaints, with many constituents telling them to do more. “I can’t recall ever receiving this many calls,” Rep. Jim McGovern told Axios. “People disgusted with what’s going on, and they want us to fight back.” Source link #James #Carville #Bold #Prediction #Trumps #White #House #Collapse Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  17. Aguia locks in decade-long Brazilian phosphate processing lease Aguia locks in decade-long Brazilian phosphate processing lease Aguia Resources has nailed down a 10-year binding lease agreement to process organic phosphate from its Três Estradas project near Caçapava do Sul in southern Brazil’s agribusiness heartland. Under the terms of the lease, Aguia will operate the Dagoberto Barcelos-owned processing facility at a monthly cost of BRL$163,000 (A$43,000) and a BRL$5 million (A$1.4m) one-off payment to the owners. Aguia has an option to extend the lease for a further 10 years. The agreement grants Aguia control over a fully operational fertiliser processing facility, which will save the company at least two years of construction time and significantly reduce its capital expenditure. Processing is set to begin in the third quarter this year, with an initial capacity of 100,000 tonnes per annum (tpa). The deal marks a major milestone for Aguia and its ambitions to become a phosphate producer as soon as possible. For more than three years, the project had been bogged down in legal battles with local ranchers, who successfully blocked any production at Pampafos. However, in a decisive turn of events, the regional court overturned the final objection three months ago, clearing the way for the project to reach its full potential. The Três Estradas project – 100 kilometres from the plant and the source of its Pampafos rock phosphate – will initially fuel the processing plant. However, a real game-changer for the company lies in its closer Mato Grande and Passo Feio deposits, which are 3km and 8km from the factory. The company is quickly evaluating both sites, with drilling already in full swing. By 2026, Aguia says it aims to completely switch processing to the new deposits, saving almost $10 per tonne in trucking costs and improving profit margins. The DB plant has been humming along at 100,000 tonnes per year for the past eight years, but Aguia sees serious expansion potential. When the cash starts flowing, the company is looking to add a hammer mill, a second drying unit and some system enhancements to the plant, which would triple the plant’s production capacity to more than 300,000tpa. Aguia’s decision to lease the DB plant appears a savvy shift in strategy since a 2023 bankable feasibility study suggested a standalone 300,000t production plant could have cost the company as much as $26m to build. The study made compelling reading given it projected annual earnings of $22m (EBITDA) over an 18-year mine life, with a short payback ******* of 2.9 years. In parallel with the DB plant signing, Aguia is in talks with an additional processing facility in the Caçapava do Sul region to expand production capabilities. Aguia Resources executive chairman Warwick Grigor said: “This binding lease agreement with DB is a major step forward for Aguia in Brazil. With Brazil largely dependent on phosphate imports, we are confident of carving out a meaningful market position in southern Brazil, the country’s pre-eminent agricultural region.” The Rio Grande do Sul region, where Aguia operates, currently imports 100 per cent of its phosphate needs at a cost of about $344 per tonne. Aguia is aiming to at least halve that amount by providing a locally sourced, high-grade product at a forecast price of $150-$160 per tonne, creating a substantial competitive advantage. With Brazil so heavily reliant on imports, mostly from North Africa, Aguia views its move as a significant step toward building homegrown supply security. Aguia has good reason for betting big on its branded Pampafos product to shake up Brazil’s phosphate market. With global field trials spanning four years, its organic product has proven itself to be far more effective than imported alternatives. Unlike chemical fertilisers that degrade the soil over time, Pampafos boosts crop performance naturally without degradation, making it a cost-efficient, high-performance solution for Brazilian farmers. Beyond phosphate, Aguia has also been busying itself with the recommissioning of its uber-high-grade Santa Barbara gold project in Colombia after successfully taking over ASX-listed Andean Mining 12 months ago. With the mine and a 30-tonne-per-day pilot plant now refurbished and up and running at site – costing less than $2m – first ore has been processed, kicking off an initial cashflow with a maiden pour of the yellow metal. Aguia will shortly crank up the drilling rigs to build a JORC-compliant resource base for a mine that has historically produced gold at more than one ounce per tonne. The company also plans to increase its processing capacity by 66 per cent to 50tpd within the next three months. With Brazil seeking greater self-sufficiency in agricultural inputs, the impending start of Aguia’s local phosphate production seems particularly well-timed. As it edges closer to first cash flow, the company appears poised to cash in on rising phosphate demand while avoiding the volatility of international shipping and global supply chains. Not long ago Aguia was just about keeping its head above water on the ASX junior explorers index, with an empty bank balance and a project bogged down in long-term legal issues. Remarkably, within 15 months and with little capital expenditure, plenty of hard work – and a bit of luck – the company can now see a clear path to a dual income stream from gold and phosphate operations, putting it in an enviable position among some of its mining peers. 18. Alibaba to Spend $53 Billion on AI Infrastructure in Big Pivot Alibaba to Spend $53 Billion on AI Infrastructure in Big Pivot (Bloomberg) — Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (BABA) has pledged to invest more than 380 billion yuan ($53 billion) on AI infrastructure such as data centers over the next three years, a major commitment that underscores the e-commerce pioneer’s ambitions of becoming a leader in artificial intelligence. Most Read from Bloomberg The internet company co-founded by Jack Ma plans to spend more on its AI and cloud computing network than it has over the past decade. Alibaba envisions becoming a key partner to companies developing and applying AI to the real world as models evolve and need increasing amounts of computing power, the company said on its official blog. NYSE – Delayed Quote • USD At close: February 21 at 4:00:02 PM EST Alibaba is righting a business knocked off-kilter by a government clampdown that began in 2020, refocusing its ambitions on e-commerce and AI. Last week, Chief Executive Officer Eddie Wu declared that Artificial General Intelligence, or AGI, was now its primary objective, joining a race so far led by the likes of OpenAI and big US firms from Microsoft Corp. to Alphabet Inc. Major technology firms from Meta Platforms Inc. to Amazon.com Inc. have similarly pledged billions toward the data centers needed to train, develop and host AI services — a vote of confidence in the technology’s future. Yet Wall Street has begun to question whether there will be enough demand to use up all that capacity, particularly after ******** upstart DeepSeek unveiled a model trained for a fraction of the cost of many of its rivals. Microsoft expects to spend $80 billion this fiscal year on AI data centers, while Meta has earmarked some $65 billion for 2025. Still, investors have applauded Alibaba’s growing determination to compete in artificial intelligence. Wu’s reference to AGI — powerful, hypothetical AI systems that could emulate or match human thinking capabilities — is striking in the context of Alibaba’s traditional online retail business. Alibaba has gained more than $100 billion of market value in 2025, though it’s still far from its pre-crackdown peak. Ma himself joined a select group of the biggest names in ******** technology and business at a televised summit convened this week by ******** President Xi Jinping — signifying Alibaba’s return to favor after years in the cold. The gathering featured entrepreneurs across a broad swath of industry, notably from the sphere of artificial intelligence. Story Continues Most Read from Bloomberg Businessweek ©2025 Bloomberg L.P. 24. Some US agencies tell workers not to reply to Musk’s email Some US agencies tell workers not to reply to Musk’s email WASHINGTON, Feb 23 (Reuters) – Multiple U.S. agencies have told employees not to respond immediately to a demand by President Donald Trump’s adviser Elon Musk to list their accomplishments in the past week or be fired, as a chaotic campaign to cull the federal workforce pushes forward. Trump administration-appointed officials at the FBI and State Department sent their staff emails telling them not to respond outside their chains of command – a possible sign of tension between members of the Republican administration and the world’s richest person in his campaign to slash the 2.3 million-strong federal civilian workforce. “The FBI, through the office of the director, is in charge of all our review processes,” said FBI Director Kash Patel, a Trump appointee, in an email to staff seen by Reuters. Musk leads the so-called Department of Government Efficiency, which in the first weeks of Trump’s administration has laid off more than 20,000 workers and offered buyouts to another 75,000, across wide swaths of the government from the Defense Department – long a top Republican priority – to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, where all staff members have been ordered to halt work. The frantic pace has led the federal government in some cases to rush to rehire workers who perform critical functions like securing the nation’s nuclear arsenal and trying to fight the worsening bird flu outbreak, which has caused egg prices to spike. While there is bipartisan agreement that the U.S. government, which carries $36 trillion in debt, would benefit from reform, Musk’s tumultuous approach has drawn widespread criticism, including from voters in some Republican-dominated areas. Federal workers on Saturday evening received an email instructing them to detail the work they did during the previous week by 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday (0459 GMT on Tuesday), shortly after Musk posted on his X social media site that failing to respond would be taken as a resignation. The subject of the email read, “What did you do last week?” and came from a human resources address in the Office of Personnel Management, but did not include Musk’s threat of termination. Workers at the departments of Defense, Homeland Security, Education and Commerce, as well as at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the National Institutes of Health and the Internal Revenue Service also were told not to respond pending further guidance, according to sources and emails reviewed by Reuters. Workers at intelligence agencies likewise will be told not to respond, according to a source. “To be clear – this is irregular, unexpected, and warrants further validation,” wrote a senior executive at the National Centers for Environmental Information, an agency that manages environmental data and is part of the Commerce Department.
