  1. Anthropic closes in on $3.5 billion funding round Anthropic closes in on $3.5 billion funding round Dario Amodei, Anthropic CEO, speaking on CNBC’s Squawk Box outside the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Jan. 21st, 2025. Gerry Miller | CNBC Anthropic is in talks to raise a $3.5 billion funding round, significantly more than the amount previously expected, CNBC has confirmed. The round would roughly triple the artificial intelligence startup’s valuation to $61.5 billion, according to two sources familiar with the deal, who asked not to be named because the details aren’t public. Lightspeed Ventures is leading the funding, with participation from General Catalyst and others, the sources said. The financing, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal, signals continued investor demand for top-tier AI companies, even in the face of potential disruption from China’s DeepSeek. Anthropic is backed by Amazon and Google, and had initially set out to raise $2 billion, according to a source. Anthropic declined to comment. The company’s last private market valuation was $18 billion. Amazon has poured $8 billion into the startup. Anthropic was founded by early OpenAI employees and is the creator of the popular chatbot Claude. Earlier Monday, Anthropic released what it says is it’s “most intelligent AI model yet. Its so-called hybrid model combines an ability to reason — or stopping to think about complex answers — with a traditional model that spits out answers in real time. 2. Ubisoft calls Assassin’s Creed Shadows street date break ‘unfortunate’ and warns patch is missing Ubisoft calls Assassin’s Creed Shadows street date break ‘unfortunate’ and warns patch is missing Ubisoft has said it’s aware that a significant number of people have been able to obtain Assassin’s Creed Shadows nearly a month ahead of its release, and claimed that any footage being shared online is not representative of the launch game. On Tuesday, there were reports of multiple copies of the new Assassin’s Creed game being sold on auction sites, weeks ahead of the game’s official March 20 release date. At the time of publishing, multiple users were streaming the game online. In a statement, Ubisoft called the leaks “unfortunate”, and claimed that it was still planning a launch patch that isn’t present in the versions of Shadow being played by members of the public. “We are aware players have accessed Assassin’s Creed Shadows ahead of its official release,” it said. “The development team is still working on patches to prepare the experience for launch and any footage shared online does not represent the final quality of the game. “Leaks are unfortunate and can diminish the excitement for players. We kindly ask you not to spoil the experience for others. Thank you to our community for already taking steps to protect everyone from spoilers. “Stay in the shadows, avoid the spoilers, and keep an eye on our channel for more official surprises in the coming weeks! March 20 will be here soon!” Details of the game were leaked earlier this month, when scans of an upcoming Assassins’s Creed Shadows art book were uploaded to a hentai website. Information about the first Assassin’s Creed Shadows expansion also leaked recently via an update to the game’s Steam product page. Titled Claws of Awaji, the DLC will reportedly introduce a new explorable area, a new weapon type and over 10 hours of additional content. Following a hands-on session with the game last month, VGC wrote: “If its narrative is smartly weaved through the larger package, Assassin’s Creed Shadows could prove to be a notable release for both fans of Valhalla and Odyssey’s country-sized sandbox, and those craving a more cinematic Samurai story.” Source link #Ubisoft #calls #Assassins #Creed #Shadows #street #date #break #unfortunate #warns #patch #missing Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  3. Can 18A save Intel from being devoured by its rivals – and Wall Street? Can 18A save Intel from being devoured by its rivals – and Wall Street? In case you haven’t been paying attention, Intel has been getting banged up lately in both the press and on Wall Street. Over the last 12 months, it’s lost just under 43% of its share value as well as its CEO, Pat Gelsinger. It’s watched Nvidia and AMD make major gains in the data center market at its expense, and its most recent client processors, the Intel Core Ultra 200S series, were rather underwhelming, especially for gaming. Probably the biggest concern for Intel was its Q3 2024 earnings, which saw the company post a staggering $16.6 billion loss, the largest the company had ever seen. And while this was generated almost entirely by accelerated depreciation charges and the restructuring required after laying off 15,000 workers, rather than products sitting unsold on the store shelves, it still went off like a bomb on Wall Street and in Washington, where talk about how Intel could be “saved” remains rampant. A lot of this talk has centered on Intel Foundry, the division of the company that actually manufactures semiconductors. Under Gelsinger, Intel invested billions of dollars into developing leading-edge process technology that could compete with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which manufactures chips for AMD, Apple, Nvidia, and even Intel, among many others. So far, those efforts haven’t borne fruit, and there have been many, many calls for Intel to dump its foundry business and focus on designing processors and outsourcing the actual manufacturing to TSMC. All of this makes the newest process technology from Intel Foundry, Intel 18A, a make-or-break proposition for Team Blue, and no matter where you stand on the AMD vs Intel vs Nvidia, you should hope that Intel pulls off a miracle here. What is a process node and what makes Intel 18A so special? (Image credit: Intel) Process node technology is very in-the-weeds stuff, and for someone looking to buy the best laptop or best processor for their PC, the question of which process node a chip was fabricated on rarely enters the discussion, even among tech enthusiasts. A process node is the set of specific manufacturing processes used to fabricate a silicon wafer containing the chips that go into computers, as well as different innovations and features these chips include. Traditionally, these nodes are referred to by a specific nanometer designation, i.e., a 3nm node, that is used to represent the physical length of the transistor gate. Over the last decade, though, these designations have become more marketing than anything, and the nanometer designation isn’t directly tied to the physical size of the transistors. Rather these designations say that a chip performs as well as a specific nanometer chip would if it were possible to produce transistors at such small scales, which nowadays is largely impossible (welcome to the end of Moore’s Law). Now, these designations largely represent generational leaps in technology, and TSMC’s process technology is currently the best there is. But where and by whom the chip that powers your PC or graphics card is made can affect everything from its price to its availability. Right now, the vast majority of advanced computer chips, whether laptop processors or data center chips are manufactured by TSMC, with its most advanced N3 process node being in the most demand. (Image credit: Alexander_Safonov / Shutterstock) TSMC’s next-gen process node, N2, is slated for volume production sometime in 2025, meaning it will be making production chips for AMD, Apple, Nvidia, and others later this year. The ‘2’ in N2 is meant to represent 2nm, which puts it well beyond anything rival Samsung or Intel foundries have been able to produce. Intel Foundry’s 18A process, meanwhile, is a 1.8nm process, making it even more advanced than TSMC’s. If Intel can deliver on the promises it has made about 18A, it would be the most advanced process technology in the world and would immediately upend the chip fabrication industry. The fact that these chips would be produced in the United States makes the proposition even more enticing for American companies like Apple who have faced longstanding criticism over their offshore manufacturing and supply chain. The most important result of Intel 18A’s success for consumers, though, would be the long-term decrease in advanced chip prices and a more stable supply across several industries dependent on these advanced chips. The COVID-19-driven supply chain issues in 2020 and 2021 revealed a real weakness in the globalized production model. While globalization has (mostly) led to lower prices for consumers, COVID showed that it only works when everything is running smoothly. Any disruption in one of the links in the supply chain can be felt for years in terms of higher prices and lower stock of the products we want to buy. Having nearly all our advanced semiconductor supply tied to Taiwan is a recipe for disaster (Image credit: Sundry Photography / Shutterstock) Taiwan is a lovely country and it deserves all of the prosperity its semiconductor industry has brought to its people. But it is also a geopolitical crisis point vis-a-vis China, which believes Taiwan belongs under mainland rule. This potential conflict over Taiwan means the global supply of the most advanced semiconductors could be threatened. The existing status quo benefits Taiwan, as its semiconductor industry acts as a ‘silicon shield‘ for the island, but for the rest of us, we’re pretty much depending on China and the US to not escalate a conflict that, in even the best case scenario, could cripple the flow of advanced chips that the modern global economy depends on. Reducing this dependence on TSMC is reason enough to want Intel 18A to succeed. If Intel can provide a genuine alternative for the most in-demand chip technology with the stability that comes from US production, it’ll provide valuable insulation for the global economy and inject much-needed competition into the chip fabrication industry, bringing prices down for everyone. What would 18A mean for Intel? (Image credit: Intel) Beyond the geopolitical issues, a successful rollout and adoption of 18A among industry customers like AMD, Nvidia, and possibly even Apple, would be a massive source of revenue for Intel separate from its own processor business, as well as providing an ‘in-house’ manufacturer of its processors, lowering their cost and giving it a competitive advantage over rival AMD. Understandably, Intel is very bullish on 18A. It has to be since the future success of the company relies on 18A delivering the kind of performance that industry customers need, especially as AI is placing extraordinary demands on existing hardware. If Intel 18A fails to establish Intel Foundry as a serious competitor to TSMC, it will likely be spun off as Wall Street is demanding. Without the support of the Intel Client side of the business to help it ramp up, it’ll likely never reach the kind of advanced node technology that TSMC has, leaving us all dependent on a single supplier for cutting-edge chips and all the vulnerabilities and added cost that entails. 6. John Oliver on Facebook: ‘An absolute sewer of hatred and misinformation’ | John Oliver John Oliver on Facebook: ‘An absolute sewer of hatred and misinformation’ | John Oliver John Oliver took aim at Mark Zuckerberg and the world of content moderation in this week’s episode of Last Week Tonight. The host of the HBO series looked at “just how much the tech industry seemed to swing toward Trump” since the election last year. He played footage of the Meta CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, explaining the new rules of Facebook which would be less strict on factchecking. Oliver joked that he looked like “Eddie Redmayne was cast to play Ice Cube” and while Zuckerberg stressed the importance of returning the site to its roots and emulating real-world conversations, he was wearing a $900,00 watch, a sign of how “out of touch” he is. Oliver said it was “a pretty notable shift” given how Zuckerberg had previously apologised to Congress about how the site had allowed lies to spread. He went back and talked about section 230, which was created at the start of the internet and meant that sites were shielded from liability for what its users post as they “couldn’t possibly vet” all of the content unless it was deemed to be ********. He said “mostly it allows them to moderate without fear” and that moderation is “absolutely key to making the internet bearable”. He added: “If you want people to use your site and crucially have companies want to pay to advertise on it you’re going to have to make choices about what to remove and how you make those choices is always going to be contentious.” The “initial optimism” expressed by those involved with Facebook that users could be trusted to behave didn’t last and moderation became “a grim job” with boundaries difficult to define. Oliver said that for Zuckerberg “a simple dream of ranking his classmates by fuckability” soon became a “company struggling to stop people from accusing random pizzerias of human trafficking”. He soon was under “heavy fire for allowing fake news and hate speech to proliferate” with those on the right claiming “political persecution” for content being removed which was “obviously all *********”. “Conservatives have been crying censorship for years but the evidence for that is very weak,” he said while adding that they were “more likely to spread disinformation according to numerous empirical studies”. Zuckerberg spoke on the Joe Rogan podcast about how the spread of Covid disinformation meant there was pressure to remove anti-vaxx stories after Biden claimed this was “killing people”. Yet despite his claims that he was being forced to remove such stories after being cursed and screamed at by government agencies, nothing that actually happened “fit Zuckerberg’s narrative” and “allegations like these have been adjudicated in court”. He felt like he was being forced to comply with Democratic rule yet his recent behaviour has shown something different. “Trump threatened Mark Zuckerberg with life in prison then Mark Zuckerberg turned around, gave him money, hired one of his buddies and changed the direction his company was going,” he said. “It doesn’t take a genius to draw a conclusion there.” He spoke about the “$25m ********* lawsuit” that Trump won against him. “Trump is doing exactly what Zuckerberg accused the Biden adminstration of: leveraging the power of his office to pressure social media companies to bend to his will.” Oliver said that with the new lack of restrictions it “sure seems set to become an absolute sewer of hatred and misinformation”, which he argued it already was but, he said: “We’re about to see what happens when they really stop trying”. There was recently a 5,000% increase in searches on how to delete accounts and users who remain should take things with “even more of a grain of salt than you did before”. But Oliver reminded viewers that advertising makes up 98% of revenue still and that this involved companies trying to microtarget you. But “you can change your settings” to affect profits, details of which he said were on www.johnoliverwantsyourraterotica.com. The pair fronted the media on Tuesday morning (AEDT) and apologised for their actions, with Smithies sporting a ****** eye that came from the training field and not from last week’s incident at Resorts World. It’s been reported that the international stars traded blows in the hotel elevator after one of the players tried to share a room with the other following a check-in blunder that left him without a bed for the night. 8. Two Members of Privacy Watchdog, Summarily Fired by Trump, File Lawsuit Two Members of Privacy Watchdog, Summarily Fired by Trump, File Lawsuit Two former members of an independent civil liberties watchdog agency who were fired by President Trump sued the government on Monday, asking a court to declare their terminations ******** and reinstate them to their former positions. The lawsuit is the latest in a deluge of litigation arising from Mr. Trump’s firings of officials as part of an assault on the basic structure of the federal government. The former officials, Travis LeBlanc and Edward W. Felten, were among three Democratic-selected members of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board whom Mr. Trump ousted on Jan. 27. He also dismissed a third member, Sharon Bradford Franklin, but she was due to depart two days later anyway and did not join the lawsuit. A fourth seat was already vacant, so the departures left the five-member board with only one member, Beth Williams, who had been chosen by Republicans. The removals paralyzed the agency by leaving it without enough members to take official actions like starting an investigative project or issuing a board report with a policy recommendation. In the opening weeks of his second term, Mr. Trump has been on a firing spree — violating statutes in which Congress set limits on when a president may remove certain types of officials. Many of those summary firings have led to lawsuits, apparently setting up test cases to see whether the Supreme Court will expand presidential power by striking the laws down as infringing on Mr. Trump’s constitutional powers. Many of those cases, however, center on explicit limits Congress wrote into law that say presidents cannot fire particular types of officials at will, but only for a cause like misconduct. Such lawsuits include Mr. Trump’s firings of members of the Merit Systems Protection Board and the National Labor Relations Board. The challenge on Monday will be more complicated because Congress did not explicitly write into a statute that board members of the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board could be removed only for cause, even though the law creating the board declares that it is an “independent” agency. But there has been a general understanding that all officials atop independent agencies are shielded by implicit protections that allow for removal only for cause. For example, the law for another independent agency, the Securities and Exchange Commission, also lacks such a clause, but in a 2010 case, the Supreme Court assumed, without actually deciding, that it nevertheless implicitly exists as a limit. Congress originally set up the privacy board for its members to serve at the president’s “pleasure,” but later revised the statute to remove that provision and make the board an “independent agency.” The complaint argued that this change and other factors meant the court should interpret the law as barring arbitrary firings. “Reading the statute to permit removal without cause would both contravene the statute’s literal meaning and fundamentally undermine the scheme of agency independence that Congress deliberately designed,” the complaint said. Congress established the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board as an independent agency after the Sept. 11 attacks. Its job is to investigate national security activities that can intrude upon individual rights, like surveillance affecting Americans or the use of terrorism watch lists to subject people to extra screening in airport security lines. It has security clearances and subpoena power, and is set up to have five members, appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate, who serve six-year terms and can stay on for another after that if no successor has been confirmed. Some members are picked by the president, and some are selected by congressional leaders of the other party. Berkshire Hathaway will see ‘higher highs’ in coming months: Ari Wald Berkshire Hathaway will see ‘higher highs’ in coming months: Ari Wald Berkshire Hathaway’s stock should reach new highs in the coming months, according to Ari Wald, head of technical analysis at Oppenheimer. Wald appeared on CNBC’s ” Power Lunch ” on Monday to offer his view on the Warren Buffett -led conglomerate, as well as two other market movers. Here’s what he had to say. Berkshire Hathaway Berkshire Hathaway’s stellar earnings report on Saturday sent both its A shares and B shares about 4% higher on Monday. The company’s fourth-quarter operating profit, which are earnings from its wholly owned businesses, soared 71% to $14.5 billion. A shares are out of reach for everyday investors with its $747,485 price tag. However, B shares, which Wald focused on, are around $500 per share. BRK.B 1Y mountain Berkshire Hathaway B shares He called the stock’s action significant, especially on a day of lackluster market performance. He recommends buying the strength. “I think it does lead to higher highs over the coming months,” Wald said. He said the stock’s recent move higher is a breakout above its September peak of $485. “That marks a resumption of the stock’s long-term uptrend,” he added. B shares of Berkshire Hathaway are up 10% year to date. Domino’s Pizza Domino’s Pizza slipped about 1.5% after reporting an earnings and revenue miss for its fourth quarter. That dip is not a buying opportunity, Wald said. “It is a stock that has been oscillating around its 200-day average, really since last July,” he said. “Relative to the market it has been making lower highs, even since 2020. We just aren’t seeing that type of structural outperformance.” DPZ 1Y mountain Domino’s Pizza Wald prefers Darden Restaurants instead. He believes the Olive Garden parent has stronger momentum. Darden has gained 4.4% so far this year, while Domino’s has added 8.6% Constellation Energy High-momentum stocks such as Constellation Energy have been in the crosshairs of the market in recent days, Wald said. Still, Constellation Energy remains on his large-cap buy list. “We have been riding it higher. We recommend letting winners run,” he said. However, the DeepSeek tech rout in January has given him pause from a trading perspective and he is holding off adding new money. “Patience is required just given the heightened volatility environment, given the poor market tape,” Wald said. CEG 1Y mountain Constellation Energy He believes it is important that the stock uphold its 200-day moving average, which is $235. “It’s still technically in a long-term uptrend. It is going to be important to stay that way,” he added. Shares of Constellation Energy are up about 20% year to date after surging 91% in 2024. However, the company’s gross margin, or the profit left after accounting for the cost of goods sold, was 77%, while analysts polled by StreetAccount were expecting 78.4%. It’s the second big stock drop for Hims & Hers in a matter of days. The shares tumbled 26% on Friday after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that the shortage of semaglutide injection products has been resolved. In May, Hims & Hers started prescribing compounded semaglutide, the active ingredient in Novo Nordisk’s blockbuster GLP-1 medications Ozempic and Wegovy. The company was a breakout star within the digital health sector in 2024, in part because of the success of its popular new weight loss offering. The stock climbed about 200% for the year. Compounded drugs are custom-made alternatives to brand-name drugs designed to meet a specific patient’s needs, and compounders are allowed to produce them when brand-name treatments are in shortage. The FDA said Friday that it will start taking action against compounders for violations in the next 60 to 90 days. 12. As Haitian Crisis Deepens and US Curbs Aid, Does Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Cherizier Hold the Answer? As Haitian Crisis Deepens and US Curbs Aid, Does Jimmy ‘Barbecue’ Cherizier Hold the Answer? As President Trump intensifies efforts to curb immigration and reduce foreign aid spending, thousands of Haitians face an uncertain future. With hundreds of thousands currently residing in the U.S. under asylum claims, many may soon be deported to a country already in crisis. Haiti, struggling with gang violence and political instability, remains deeply affected by widespread poverty. Gangs control over 80% of the capital, Port-au-Prince, leading to rampant violence and severe shortages of food and shelter. This desperate situation has pushed many Haitians to flee their homeland, seeking refuge in the U.S. However, with the Trump administration moving to cut foreign aid and enforce stricter immigration policies, those seeking asylum may soon find their lives upended. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported a troubling rise in displacement due to gang violence, with more than a million people now forced from their homes in Haiti. Kennedy Okoth Omondi, a spokesperson for the IOM, described the situation as alarming: “We have seen the number triple to over a million people who have now been displaced because of gang violence in Haiti. This is really a troubling number.” Despite receiving billions in foreign aid over the years, Haiti’s problems have only worsened. Corruption and poor leadership have drained the country’s resources, with many questioning why aid has not resulted in more tangible improvements. Pastor Julio Volcy of Rendezvous Christ Church expressed frustration with Haiti’s political elite. “If money was a problem in Haiti, it would have been fixed now. But unfortunately, the political sphere in the country and the business community have been using their influence to create the mess that we have in the country,” he said. As the situation deteriorates, one man has emerged as a controversial figure who may hold the keys to Haiti’s future: Jimmy Cherizier. A former police officer, Cherizier now leads a coalition controlling much of Port-au-Prince. Although accused of brutal violence and earning the nickname “Barbecue,” Cherizier denies the accusations, claiming that the media has distorted his image. “My mother was a street vendor, she used to sell cooked food on the street. So I bear the name, Jimmy Barbecue, because my mother used to sell barbecue. Now that the system wants to destroy my character, they use it and put a tag on it, pretending that I’m the one who is burning people,” Cherizier explained. Cherizier has denied any ambitions to take control of the country, despite being referred to as one of Haiti’s most powerful figures. He insists his focus is on improving living conditions for his people. “Before thinking about taking any position in Haiti, I have a lot of allegations against me. I would have to go to court first to clean my dossier. All I’m doing now is fighting for better conditions of living for my people,” he said. Seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, Bebe King who was six, and nine-year-old Alice Aguiar were murdered. Eight other children were badly injured. Anger and disbelief soon followed, prompting burning questions over the identity, background and possible motive of the attacker, and suspicions about why the authorities appeared to be saying a lot less than they knew. Despite public demands for information, the police provided few details about the attacker. There was very little information in their statements about his background. He was not even named because he was 17 at the time of the attack. One thing was made public early on – it was not being treated as terror-related by the authorities. The ***’s independent reviewer of terrorism legislation has told BBC Panorama that he believes the quality and quantity of information released by the authorities in the hours after the attack on 29 July 2024 was “inadequate”. “People got the sense that something was being withheld or fudged in some way, and that led the social media types who wanted to spread disinformation to spread disinformation,” Jonathan Hall KC said. Family handouts Elsie Dot Stancombe, Alice Aguiar and Bebe King died The day after the attack, rioters targeted a mosque in Southport. It was all untrue but it served as fuel for four days of rioting and violence – the worst the *** had seen in more than a decade. There was swift and widespread condemnation, but this was not confined to the violence and disorder. The very act of questioning whether the authorities were withholding information from the public was also criticised on the grounds that it had stoked the flames of disorder. But the questions have not gone away. BBC Panorama has spent weeks in Southport, where everyone seems to know someone who has been affected by the attack. What also quickly became apparent is the sense among many residents that the authorities have been concealing information. “Cover-up” is one term we heard repeatedly. So, is it justified? What the police said, and when they said it, is important. On the evening of the attack, the Chief Constable of Merseyside Police, Serena Kennedy, held a press conference. She said “a 17-year-old male from Banks in Lancashire, who is originally from Cardiff” had been arrested in connection with the stabbings. This was true – but police did not divulge family background details, including that the attacker’s parents were Christians who had come to the *** from Rwanda. The attacker was not named because he was one week shy of his 18th birthday. In that initial statement, the police said the motive was “unclear” but at that moment in time the incident was “not being treated as terror-related”. But Jonathan Hall KC told BBC Panorama that the authorities could, and should, have released more information after the attack. “The public could have been told immediately that there had been an attack by a 17-year-old male who was ******, British, born in Wales and has lived in the *** all his life,” he told us. “That he comes from a Rwandan background, and as far as the police were aware, from a Christian background. That it was not possible to say whether he had an ideology or that he was a terrorist. But the police are looking at, at pace, all the material that they found.” Ultimately, the Southport attack was never classed as terrorism by the authorities as that would have required evidence of an ideological motive, and the police have said they found no such evidence. “We were clear that there was no evidence, information or intelligence to suggest that this was terrorist related,” Chief Constable Serena Kennedy told Panorama. “We were really clear that we would keep that under continual review, which we’ve done from day one. But our colleagues in counter-terrorism policing, working with ourselves, were satisfied that this was not a terrorist related incident, and that’s remained the case throughout.” Jonathan Hall agrees with this assessment, but says that in the immediate aftermath of the attack, the police should have said it was not possible at that stage to say whether the attacker was a terrorist or not. Counter-extremism expert Ian Acheson agrees. “I don’t think they could conceivably have arrived at that conclusion on the basis of the evidence,” he said. “I think the comms decision was ‘let’s say as little as possible and let’s try to dampen down community feeling by saying, ‘no, there’s nothing to see here’,’ which of course then created a narrative that was exploited by misinformation and disinformation.” Jonathan Hall KC was appointed to his role in 2019 The day after the attack, Merseyside Police issued a press release reiterating that the incident was “not currently being treated as terror-related”. That same day, however, police halted their search of the attacker’s house after finding a substance under his bed that they suspected may be poison. The substance was sent to the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory at Porton Down to be examined by an expert in chemical and biological warfare agents. Three days later, the lab confirmed that the suspicious substance was the poison ricin, but the public was not told. The next day, police found excerpts of an al-Qaeda training manual on one of the attacker’s computers. But the public was not told about that either. Ministers had been kept informed of these developments, but another three months would pass before the police publicly announced the discovery of the ricin and the al-Qaeda manual. Merseyside Police Police found a substance later established as ricin under Rudakubana’s bed On 1 August, three days after the attack, the suspect was officially identified as Axel Rudakubana after a judge lifted restrictions on reporting his name. But still, to some people, the withholding of other information by the authorities has led to suggestions of “cover-up”. There is, however, an alternative explanation. Chief Constable Serena Kennedy told Panorama: “My priority was to make sure that we got justice for the families of the victims. And whilst I would have liked to have said more, I was not going to risk bringing Rudakubana to justice.” PA Media Rudakubana pleaded guilty to three charges of ******* and 10 charges of attempted ******* and was sentenced to a minimum of 52 years Legally, there are restrictions about what can be said before a trial to prevent a jury from being influenced. Saying too much or the wrong thing could potentially have allowed Rudakubana’s defence to argue that a fair trial was impossible. Speaking after Rudakubana’s guilty plea, Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterated this reason for caution: “Yes, I knew the details as they were emerging. That is the usual practice in a case such as this. But you know and I know that it would not have been right to disclose those details. “The only losers if the details had been disclosed would be the victims and the families because it ran the risk the trial would collapse.” But following Southport, there is now growing acknowledgement that more openness may be needed in the way the authorities communicate with the public. “We’re operating a criminal justice system which, in order to protect the courtroom, really locks down information about investigations when they’re under way,” Assistant Commissioner Matt Jukes, the ***’s head of counter-terrorism policing, told Panorama. “But I should also be clear it’s a system which, in my view, was built for a different age and I’m absolutely certain that we need to find ways of saying more about those investigations.” Merseyside Police A police search of the family home revealed weapons in his bedroom and a knife in the living room (pictured) One question that remains unanswered is how much Rudakubana’s parents knew about their son. A police search of the family home revealed weapons in his bedroom and a knife in the living room, as well as materials for producing ricin. On four occasions between 2021 and 2022, Rudakubana’s parents called the police following concerns about their son. A week before the Southport attack, Rudakubana’s father stopped him taking a taxi to his old school. His son was dressed in the same green hoodie he wore on the day of the Southport attack. Police now believe that Rudakubana had intended to carry out an attack, but on that occasion, his parents didn’t call the police. Merseyside Police told us they couldn’t discuss questions about what Rudakubana’s parents knew, citing an “ongoing live investigation”. The Home Office also declined to comment on the circumstances in which his parents came to the ***. Last month, Rudakubana pleaded guilty to three charges of ******* and 10 charges of attempted ******* and was sentenced to a minimum of 52 years. The judge said he would have been given a whole life term had he been an adult at the time of the attacks. Following Rudakubana’s conviction, Merseyside Police have released more footage of the moment when he was arrested. Watch police bodycam footage of the arrest of Southport attacker Axel Rudakubana The government has announced a public inquiry into the many missed opportunities by multiple agencies to stop Rudakubana. A significant amount of detail on these failings has already been released, raising tough questions for several agencies including Lancashire Police and the counter-extremism programme Prevent. In March 2022, Lancashire Police found Rudakubana on a bus with a knife. It was one of several interactions the force had with the teenager, but he was not charged. He was also referred to Prevent three times but on each occasion the case was closed. Assistant Commissioner Matt Jukes told Panorama: “I’m responsible for the police part of the Prevent strategy. And so, the sense that there were moments when that system might have made a more decisive difference absolutely sits with me.” Lancashire Police told us that they “stand ready to engage fully” and that the public inquiry is the “right place for the interactions of the various agencies… to be scrutinised and considered”. They say they are “fully committed to ensuring any learning is identified.” Source link #Inadequate #information #released #authorities #Southport #attack #terror #law #reviewer Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

With a 9:50pm kick off, the rapper appeared on stage almost two hours later than scheduled. Berkshire Hathaway stock will see ‘higher highs’ over the coming months, says technical analyst Ari Wald Berkshire Hathaway stock will see ‘higher highs’ over the coming months, says technical analyst Ari Wald Berkshire Hathaway’s stock should reach new highs in the coming months, according to Ari Wald, head of technical analysis at Oppenheimer. Wald appeared on CNBC’s ” Power Lunch ” on Monday to offer his view on the Warren Buffett -led conglomerate, as well as two other market movers. Here’s what he had to say. Berkshire Hathaway Berkshire Hathaway’s stellar earnings report on Saturday sent both its A-shares and B-shares about 4% higher on Monday. The company’s fourth-quarter operating profit, which are earnings from its wholly owned businesses, soared 71% to $14.5 billion. A-shares are out of reach for everyday investors with its $747,485 price tag. However, B-shares, which Wald focused on, are around $500 per share. B-shares of Berkshire Hathaway are up 10% year to date. He believes the Olive Garden-parent has stronger momentum. Darden has gained 4.4% so far this year, while Domino’s added 8.6% Constellation Energy High-momentum stocks like Constellation Energy have been in the crosshairs of the market in recent days, Wald said. Still, Constellation Energy remains on his large-cap buy list. “We have been riding it higher. We recommend letting winners run,” he said. However, the DeepSeek tech rout in January has given him pause from a trading perspective and he’s holding off adding new money. “Patience is required just given the heightened volatility environment, given the poor market tape,” Wald said. CEG 1Y mountain Constellation Energy He believes it’s important that the stock uphold its 200-day moving average, which is $235. “It’s still technically in a long-term uptrend. It is going to be important to stay that way,” he added. Shares of Constellation Energy are up about 20% year to date, after surging 91% in 2024. About 6% of eligible Ontario voters cast an early ballot in snap election, data shows About 6% of eligible Ontario voters cast an early ballot in snap election, data shows Just over six per cent of eligible Ontario voters cast an early ballot in the snap provincial election, preliminary data shows. Elections Ontario said Monday that 678,789 — or roughly 6.14 per cent of the electorate — voted in the three-day advanced voting *******. It’s basically impossible to draw any firm conclusions from the data. The early election call by PC Leader Doug Ford meant the advanced voting ******* was considerably condensed, as required by the province’s electoral law. In 2022, more than one million people, or about 9.92 per cent, cast an advanced ballot. But that was over a 10-day window. In 2018, the advanced voting ******* was five days, and about 6.8 per cent of those eligible participated, according to Elections Ontario. Very little about potential election day turnout can be gleaned from the preliminary advanced voting data. That said, final turnout in 2022 was among the lowest in Ontario’s history, with only about 43 per cent of the electorate bothering to show up at the polls. Cramer answer to Friday market plunge — plus, a stock he may soon buy, again Cramer answer to Friday market plunge — plus, a stock he may soon buy, again Every weekday the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer holds a “Morning Meeting” livestream at 10:20 a.m. ET. Here’s a recap of Monday’s key moments. 1. Stocks on Monday were trying to bounce from Friday’s sharp selloff, which saw the S & P 500 post its biggest one-day pullback of the year. “I don’t know if it’s going to take,” Jim Cramer said during the Morning Meeting, citing a number of things working against the market such as declining GDP growth estimates and the drubbing of Palantir and other high-flyers. In his Sunday column , Jim wrote: “What do you do when that happens? You keep your cash and you wait” for the market to get oversold. It’s not there yet, according to the S & P 500 Short Range Oscillator . Jim said, “Count on the Oscillator,” it will let you know when to buy. 2. Another factor weighing on the market was Microsoft , though it has come way off the lows of the session. TD Cowen said on Friday that Micorosft has canceled some U.S. data center leases. The company refuted those claims on Monday. The stock, which was getting crushed in the premarket and opened down more than 2%, has cut those losses in half. Jim said the Club has been a seller of Microsoft, and he has “no desire to buy it back right now.” Microsoft selling extended into the power generation data center buildout plays, with Club stock Eaton down more than 2%. “Call me a buyer soon, because Eaton has other businesses that are doing a lot of good things,” Jim said. We added to Eaton on Friday. 3. Starbucks shares rose more than 1.5% on Monday after CEO Brian Niccol announced plans to lay off 1,100 support workers to simplify the coffee giant’s corporate structure. The move is part of Niccol’s “Back to Starbucks” plan, which involves positioning the company to operate more efficiently by doing more with less. In a Monday letter to employees, Niccol said he aims to accomplish this by “removing layers and duplication and creating smaller, more nimble teams.” Jim believes that Niccol, only in the CEO role since September, has been doing a remarkable job at Starbucks. 4. 22. Giuliani has fully satisfied Georgia election workers’ $148 million judgment Giuliani has fully satisfied Georgia election workers’ $148 million judgment By Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK (Reuters) – Rudolph Giuliani has “fully satisfied” a $148 million judgment won by two Georgia election workers who said he defamed them by falsely claiming they helped steal the 2020 U.S. presidential election from Donald Trump, a Monday court filing shows. A satisfaction of judgment was filed in Manhattan federal court, after the former New York City mayor and Trump adviser announced a settlement on January 16 to compensate the election workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter Wandrea’ “Shaye” Moss. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. Terms have not been disclosed, but Giuliani said after the settlement that he would keep his apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, his condominium in Palm Beach, Florida, and his personal belongings. He promised not to defame the plaintiffs again. Lawyers for Giuliani and the election workers did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The settlement averted a trial before U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman over whether Giuliani could keep the condominium and World Series baseball rings gifted to him by the New York Yankees when he was New York mayor, from 1994 to 2001. Freeman and Moss won the $148 million judgment from a Washington, D.C. jury in December 2023. Giuliani, a Republican, still faces criminal charges in Arizona and Georgia for trying to overturn Democrat Joe Biden’s 2020 win over Trump, a Republican. He has pleaded not guilty. Last week, Liman rejected a request by a firm seeking unpaid fees from Giuliani’s now-dismissed personal bankruptcy case to be appointed receiver for the Manhattan apartment.
